A Victim of the Art

The days pass in relative peace, as the three agents resume their normal lives.

Haunted by what she recently had to do, Vanessa spends time with her mother. It helps her forget Marlene Baughman's screams. Still, her mother is getting older. Vanessa may wonder if the situation ever presented itself if she'd not have attempted the same.

Her attempts to retreat to nature prove more difficult. Clyde Baughman had created his horror somewhere out in a place like this. It made it hard for her to relax.

Nik improves his accounting skills and leafs through the books Baughman so nicely left for him.

Edmund keeps a close watch on his sister, appreciating the normalcy after what he's seen. He vows to keep her safe. He also examines the tape, and from it does some research on the Pastor on the side.
OOC:   Both of the results of your actions can be found in the OOC thread if you've not looked already.
It isn't until nearly three months later that the group is called for again.
May 10th, 1999
The email shows up in all three agent's inboxes early in the morning.

Subject: A Night at the Opera

Your team has been invited to an opera performance in Long Island, New York.

Arrangements have been made with your superiors to assign you the case later today. Once assigned, make your way to Glenridge, Long Island, and report in to the authorities there. We have reason to believe they are investigating a case that requires Opera Lovers intervention.

Below is a number for a local Agent in the vicinity. Once you've reported in to the locals contact MARCUS and brief him on the situation. He is to be your source of contact to the group for the duration of this mission.

This is a high profile investigation, so caution is strongly urged to avoid exposure of the organization's existence or goals.

Be Seeing You.

It takes a few hours, but all three agents are called into SAC Hobbson's office. Of course, SAC Hobbson himself is long retired now, happily spending it at various fishing spots across the country. Their new superior is a stern faced man in his 40's named Reynolds. He lacks Hobbson's social tendencies and is very much no nonsense, but he does not seem overtly vindicative. But then, why would he be? He had gotten the job he was angling for.

"Agents, glad you all could make it. We've got a case in Long Island, New York and you've been asked to assist with it by the higher ups. Apparently your cracking of the Santana case carries a lot of weight.

"I'm afraid I don't have much detail at the moment, but some serial killer has been stalking the town of Glenridge, Long Island. You've all been assigned to assisting the local police with the case. Make your arrangements, we're taking you out on the 4'o clock flight today. Whoever wants you there wants you there today
."
OOC:   Let me know if you guys want to do anything on the flight or so forth, research, etc. I'll update tomorrow with the arrival.

“Opera, huh?” Nik whispers to the others as they prepare to leave. “I hope its Philip Glass. I don’t really like opera otherwise. I’ll see if there is anything on VICAP about this case.”

"I'm sure 'opera' is just code for 'operation,'" replies Vanessa. "I'll look up past crimes in the Glenridge area. Serial killers generally start smaller. Arson and cruelty to animals are big indicators. Bedwetting's the other major one, but that won't be in the police records."

Nik finds the first Glendridge murder had taken place on April 3rd of this year. Another had taken place on April 28th and May 7th. All three murders were characterized by brutal trauma and extensive mutilation. In all three cases the heads were removed, and in only one case was it recovered. The agents discover the killings have made the news. A local reporter for a tabloid had given the killer the nickname The Glenridge Chiropractor, and it had apparently stuck.

There were few reports of past crimes though. According to what Vanessa finds, Glendridge is a very wealthy and self contained community. The last murder she can find took place in 93, where the wife of a prominent doctor shot him for cheating on her. The case had attracted some attention, including an airing of Inside Edition. Other than that though, there are no real other crimes that stand out.

The team flies into John F. Kennedy Internal Airport. From there, they're given a rented car. It takes less than 50 minutes to arrive on Long Island, and only fifteen or so more before they're in Glenridge.

Glendridge is a very wealthy community. Mansions and large homes are the norm here. The grass is pristine, and sprinklers shower every lawn they pass. Joggers are out and about, and almost every home has at least two cars out front. It's a charming little community with a history dating back to before the Revolutionary War. The large Great Peconic Bay borders the town, along with the historic Old Sampson Lighthouse that seems to overlook the rest of it. Needless to say, the agents may feel a bit out of place, especially because the car they were given was a Ford model a few years out of date, with a few scratches and flaking paint .

The small police station is located in the middle of the small downtown. It's not much bigger than the San Carlos police station had been, but Glendridge has a small population of just over 15000, and a lesser of a crime rate.
The insides of the building are as immaculate as anything else. An officer is at the receptionist desk. She seems to be in her late thirties, early forties, and looks at the group with tired disgust.

"I told you we don't have any comment. Now get outta here before..." Her eyes narrow and she frowns. "Wait, you're not reporters. You look like the feds we were told to expect."

Presuming someone shows her a badge, she gets an embarrassed look on her face. "Shit, sorry. This whole horror show has attracted a lot of attention. But it takes one cop to know one, and you're not cops, but you're close enough. You don't have the self satisfied look of the reporters." She gets up and introduces herself. " I'm Officer Kathy Greenwich. Real glad to have you here. Follow me if you would, Detective Gregson is our officer in charge of the case. He's going to brief you on it."

Nik is hoping that the perpetrator isn't another one of those traveling space parasites. He wonders too if they will get a visit from the ' NSA'.

"I'm Siilasvuo, this is Rue and our team leader, Marchand. I hope we can help you clear this up" he says sincerely.

With the others, he follows the officer.

"Pleased to meet you," says Vanessa, following the officer. "Hopefully we can be of help. Glenridge rarely sees serious crimes, which is nice most of the time, but when it does happen it's not easy to deal with it when you don't have as much practice."

"We appreciate your help," Kathy says. She seems to mean it.

The officer opens the door and the investigators find themselves in the briefing room. It's a spacious one, certainly bigger than the San Carlos briefing room had been. A dozen or so black chairs surround a large table. The only person in it appears to be Detective Gregson. He's an older man, mid 50's and looks fairly plump. But his uniform is pristine and his yellow badge shines, suggesting a certain pride in his work. He puts down a folder he's reading and greets the team.

"These the Agents, Greenwich?"

"Yes sir."

"Good to hear. Please, have a sea.t I'm Andrew Gregson, the Detective in charge of this case. I'm afraid I don't know your names yet, so if we could get reintroduced. Kathy, would you get us guests some doughnuts and coffee?"

"Sure thing."
OOC:   anyone who likes can make a HUMINT roll. success makes it clear Kathy's not appreciating being the team's errand girl.
"Now," Gregson says, folding his meaty hands in front of him after the team settles in. "I want to start by thanking you all for coming. And I want to reassure you we're giving you full authority over this case. There won't be any power plays here between us locals and you feds. We've got a dangerous criminal on the loose, and I know my officers well enough to know we're all out of our league in stopping them. Myself included. So anything you need, I'll do what I can to provide.

Officer Greenwich returns with the refreshments. She goes to leave, but Gregson allows her to stay, and she happily takes a seat.

"That said, let's get to it. Just be warned; some of these pictures will require a strong stomach." Taking a doughnut, Detective Gregson gets up from the table and activates the projector at the front of the room. A picture appears. It was of a smiling middle aged man with dark brown hair and eyes and perfect, shiny white teeth. He looked to be in good shape and had probably had a face lift.

"Right, this right here is Dr. Carl Maretti, one of our local dentists. Dr. Maretti was 45, married, two preteen daughters. He was reported missing by his wife on April 3rd. when he didn't return home from work. Apparently this was highly unusual, as he usually came straight home. He was found the next morning in a culvert around 9 by a jogger in Adams Park, just off the Bay."

He flips to the next picture, and the smiling man is replaced by an obvious corpse lacking a head. Extensively mutilated, It looked like nothing more than a bashed and ripped bag of severed muscles and shattered bones.

"That's Dr. Maretti. What's left of him, at least. As you can see his spine was forcibly removed and many of his bones were completely shattered. His head was missing but was located a short way nearby in the park, lacking a jaw. Both eyes were, let's see here, ah, removed from his head like they were gouged out. Of note, this is the only body we've recovered the head for. Based on the damage we assumed it was some sort of large animal attack, but none of them are known to be loose in Glenridge. And the second murder dissuaded us of that notion."

Another picture came on this screen. This showed a small woman who seemed to shirk back from the photograph. She wore conservative clothes and her smile was very clearly forced. She was the textbook definition of a wallflower.

"Vanessa Hatvan. 41. She was a librarian at the local high school. Unmarried, not seeing anyone as far as we knew. Few close friends, which makes it hard to pinpoint the exact time of her disappearance. She was found early on the morning of April 28th just before school started by another teacher, forty feet up a tree right on the school grounds. She was also missing her head, and we've not managed to find it." he moved forward to the next picture, which showed the librarian headless and her body absolutely devastated by severe physical trauma, her clothes torn to shreds." Gregson shook his head. "Never gets easier to look at." He takes another doughnut.

The next picture came up on the screen. This one showed a smiling teenage girl dressed in a cheerleading outfit. She was absolutely stunning, with long blonde hair, blue eyes, and a toned, athletic body.

Lauren Harrogate. 17, Cheerleader at the high school. Well liked, very popular. She was kidnapped from her home on the night of May 6th. We actually have a witness to this one, her mother. The assailant gained entry by smashing through the balcony door that connected the exterior of the house to her room. This caused a silent alarm to go off, and the police were alerted. We got there in under fifteen minutes, but by then the assailant and Lauren were both gone. When we got there, we only found Lauren's mother sobbing uncontrollably. We suspect she witnessed the event, but due to psychological problems she could not tell us anything. In fact, since the incident she's gone into a catatonic state and had to be committed."

"We conducted a wide scale search, but it wasn't until the morning of May 7th that we found her. She was found the next day on an electrical tower just off highway 31, sixty feet up in the air. Her body was just like the others." A picture confirmed it.

"We're assuming the killer must have access to a helicopter to dispose of the bodies, but none have been reported rented in the area recently."

He settled back down into his chair. "So we got some sicko offing people in this town, and Glenridge is on edge. Hence why you feds were called in. Hopefully you can use your skills and get to the bottom of this. Because I'll be honest; none of us can."
OOC:   Can everyone please give me a san check for violence 0/1d3. The brutality done to these bodies has only been matched by the San Carlos killer. And given what it turned out to be, that may bode ill for the type of case this will evolve into...

Nik has mentally prepared himself for the sights to follow, although the sheer violence of them is not what he had expected.

"Yeah, this is definitely not your average killer." How the hell did they get left up in these high places? Perhaps the key to this is finding out why these victims were chosen.

"Detective, did the victims know each other? Is there any connection between them that you know of?"

Rue sits quietly trying not to show how much these gruesome scenes affected him, especially the young girl, so much like Amy.

He grabs a coffee with a shaking hand and downs a lot of it in one long swallow. Although this has still affected him, he feels a bit more in control now, especially knowing that his sister is safe, well she was just a few short hours ago.
Come on guy ... focus thinking:   these people and their families deserve your full attention - right now!

Vanessa shudders when she sees the gruesome pictures, blinking back tears. "Well, the second and third victims were both at the high school," she says when she recovers. "Were they patients of the dentist, perhaps? Also, how were the bodies without heads positively identified? I realize that it's highly unlikely that one of the bodies would be someone else and the missing person still unaccounted for, but it's best to cover all the bases."

"These murders have been very rough on all of us." Gregson says, noticing the groups discomfort.

"Two of the victims working at or attending the high school did make us curious, but Dr. Maretti has no connection to Glendridge High as best as we can determine. He's not an alumni of it and neither is his wife; both moved here from upstate. His two daughters are still in elementary school.

"Let me see
..." he goes through his papers. "We do know that Lauren Harrogate did see Dr. Maretti for a routine checkup around three months ago. His secretary can't even remember the appointment, which suggests it was routine. As you said, small town. A coincidence like that's not unusual. Vanessa Hatvan--that's the librarian-- there were no records of her ever visiting with Dr. Maretti. Sot here does not seem to be an obvious connection between all three.

"The two victims being from the high school is interesting. But from what we could determine, Harrogate and Hatvan hardly knew each other. Lauren was a very popular student with plenty of friends. Hatvan was the school librarian who, according to her co workers, mostly kept to herself. We haven't had one friend of hers come forward, and her parents live in Georgia. So we're really struggling to find something that puts all three of these folks together. But hey, that's why you're the FBI and I'm just a local cop
." Gregson says this without a hint of resentment, and one gets the feeling this arrangement suits him just fine.

"The bodies were identified by forensic testing. In Ms. Harrogate's case,a small butterfly tattoo on her left ankle offered us quick confirmation. If you want to see the lab evidence, I suggest you consult with our medical examiner, Dr. Stephen Santorini. He's been working this case since the first body. It's just after 6 now, but he might still be a this office. He's a hard worker." He gives the address.

"You might want to talk to the victims friends and families as well. We've done so, with little success, but maybe we're missing something. and if any of you want to see Dr. Maretti's office, Lauren Harrogate's home or Vanassa Hatvan's home or place of employment, we can drive you out there.

"The only one who might be hard to get in touch with is Lauren's mother. Mrs. Harrogate is currently a guest of the Swansea Psychiatric Hospital. She's apparently unresponsive, which is pretty frustrating, since we think she witnessed her daughter's abduction. Probably for the best though. If she knew her daughter was dead who knows how she would react."

"But it's late, so if you want to hit the hay and get to it in the morning I can't blame you after your long flight. We've got you reservations at the Excalibur Hotel. It's right on Glenridge Bay. Has a wonderful view of it too in all its rooms
."
OOC:   You've got a lot of options for your first move. This scenario is a bit more open than the others. So think carefully and let me know what you want to do first.

"Thank you, Detective Gregson," says Vanessa. "All right, Nik, see what you can find out from her, if anything. I'll go talk to the medical examiner, if he's still there. I speak the lingo, and I'd like to get his take on the bodies and see the autopsy reports."

Gregson nods in agreement to both ideas. "Lauren's mother may prove hard to get much out of, but I certainly welcome the attempt. If she could remember what happened to her daughter that would go a long way to cracking the case. I'll call over to let them know you're coming, but I can't imagine they'd have any objection to it. And I'm sure Doc will appreciate the opportunity to go over what he's learned. Just be aware he can be a little...eccentric."
OOC:   If there are no other questions I'll move us on once Rue declares if he wants to go with either of you or set out on his own.

"Dr. Maretti's widow is named Caroline. She's a homemaker and cares for the children. We don't think the culvert's of any significance, though it's part of the park Maretti was known to jog through at times. It's plausible someone waited for him and chose to strike while his guard was down."

The trio leave and gets in their vehicle. Gregson had given all three of them directions, and thankfully the town was small enough that all three stops were on their route. Nik could drop off Rue and Vanessa on his way to the sanatorium.

But the agents are barely on the road before a black van abruptly pulls along side of them. The side doors open, and a woman gets out. She is beautiful, with a toned body and fashionable clothes, and a Winona Ryder styled head of black hair. Her brown eyes are big and expressive, and she offers the group a dazzling smile as she raps on the car window with her fist.Should the agents bring the window down, she leans in.

"Sonja Dewey with Phenomen-X. Can you confirm the interest the FBI has taken in the Glendridge Chiropractor investigation, and if you are presently pursuing any leads? Our viewers find this case most interesting and want to know what's really going on." She's leaning into the car's window as far as she can, and her eyes look hungry for a scoop.

As Nik revs the engine Sonja steps back, her hands in the air. She looks completely calm.

"Well if you decide to talk, give me a call." She tosses her card into the car's window. It contains her name and a phone number.

The agents leave her on the side of the road. She apparently has the good sense not to follow. But it was concerning she had tracked them down so quickly. Especially since this meant media were probably flooding the town.

The agents make it to each of their objectives.
Edmund,Dr. Maretti's home is a nice three story townhouse a few blocks from the bay. Everything about the home radiates warmth, from the bright pastel colors it is painted in to the mat welcoming visitors to the home. Rue knocks on the door and is soon face to face with Caroline Maretti. She looks slightly younger than her husband, with bleach blonde hair and an hourglass figure. But she wears stained sweats at the moment and it is obvious to Edmund that she had been crying. "Can I help you?" She asks Edmund, her voice a monotone.
Vanessa,The medical examiners officer is only a few blocks away from the police station. Vanessa gains entry into what would normally be the reception, but there is no receptionist present. It's not surprising, given the time of night. "Back here," comes a voice, so she heads back further into the office. She is greeted by a kind grandfatherly looking man. He appears to be in his mid to late 60's. Upon seeing Vanessa, he smiles warmly and extends his hand. When she gives it to him, she is a bit surprised to find that he brings it to his lips and gently kisses it. "Charmed my dear. You are the Federal Agent then? My, I did not realize they made them so attractive nowadays." he chuckles. His gray hair is wild and has obviously not seen anything like a comb in sometime. His glasses are at least a size too big for him, and his outfit is puke green and bright purple that would lead anyone with an ounce of taste to blush. "I'm Dr. Stephen Santorini, the medical examiner here in Glendridge. It's a role I've held for... oh, over a decade now. Normally we're a nice quiet community, but these recent murders have rather shattered that sense of tranquility. "I have the bodies or what's left of them rather in the examination room, if you'd like to see them. But if you don't mind me saying so they're rather a ghastly sight. If you prefer I can just give you the summary of what I found."
Nik,Nik finds the Swansea Psychiatric Institute to be a large building just off the town's bay. There's a garden and waterfall just off tot he side of the front doors, but no one seems to be out and about at the moment. The building itself is bright and cheerful, seeming to project calm. Plaques off to the side give a brief history of the Institute. Apparently it's been lauded in the national press for its forward thinking treatment methods. Nik enters the building and is quickly ushered into a seat by a smiling receptionist. A few minutes later a doctor comes out, smiling warmly as he shakes Nik's hand. "Thank you very much for coming, Agent. I'm Doctor Stanton Feldman. I live in this community along with my family, and we all very much want this criminal apprehended. It would give us all a great deal of peace of mind." "I'm afraid however that I don't know how much help Mrs. Harrogate will be to you. Since she's got here she's been in something of a catatonic state, and despite all our best efforts to reach her progress has been limited. The only time she does anything is if she's touched. She begins to scream and needs to be sedated. I hate to think what she's witnessed." Dr. Feldman shakes his head sadly. "Still, I'm confident that eventually we'll be able to bring her out of it. But this could take months if not years. Healing takes time. "I won't stop you from seeing her, if you'd like. Maybe you can say something that gets through to her, at least to some extent. I just ask you don't mention the fate of her daughter. Mrs. Harrogate was already clinically depressed from the recent death of her husband. I do not think she could recover if she knew her daughter died. I also must insist I remain in the room while you interview her, just to ensure she does not get too upset." [ooc]Nik can try Persuade to convince the doctor to stay outside while he talks to her, if he likes.[/ooc]

Vanessa smiles, her instincts about the doctor confirmed. "Thank you, Doctor," she says. "I'm one of the Federal Agents, yes. Vanessa Marchand. It's true, FBI agents are getting more attractive in the nineties - or at least more female. I'm what they call a 'Starling,' one of many young women who joined the Bureau after being inspired by the character of Clarice Starling in Silence of the Lambs. I've seen pictures of the bodies, and those were bad enough, but I may benefit from a closer look. I have medical training too, which is why I was the one who came here. But let's start with the autopsy reports. I'd like copies of the full reports, please, not just the summary."

Nik realises that he's going to have to lie through his teeth to pull this one off. But he has no doubt that this woman has seen something that has completely shattered her view of what she thought the world was like, and he can understand that. He looks Doctor Feldman straight in the eyes.

“Listen Doctor. I know that you want to protect this woman from any further damage. And I swear that I won’t tell her the truth about her daughter. But the reason I’m here is that I specialize in cases like this. My brief is to interview witnesses who have undergone extreme mental trauma. I can’t have any distractions – she needs my full attention and I need hers. So please, let me have the room. I won’t hurt her any more than she is already suffering now. By the way, what's her first name?"

Edmund,"Of course. Come in, please. Don't mind the mess." The house is largely neat, but Rue gets the sense largely is viewed as a flaw by Ms. Maretti. She leads him to a sitting room. An open window allows bright sunlight to stream in, and a painting of sailboats hangs in the corner. "Can I get you coffee, or anything?" Caroline asks. She seems to find some peace sliding back into the role of hostess. Once she's met to his needs, she sits down as well. "The children are at school. Then the next day, around nine or so... I got the call his body had been found."
Vanessa,"Well a pleasure to meet you, Agent Marchand. And please, just call me Stephen. I hate formality, especially when we're both examining a corpse. Short of fornicating I can't imagine much more intimate than that." He chuckles. "Right, the reports. If you would step into my office..." Stephen's office is messy. Papers clog every available surface, and Vanessa finds herself standing backwardly as the doctor looks through a stack of them, apparently using his own sorting system. Finnally though,h e holds out a folder for her. "Here you are, my dear." Looking it over, Vanessa can find that all three victims were in good to excellent health pre killing. The cause of death was the same for all three; intense trauma caused by an unknown weapon. Santorini believes the tool used to be something like a tree-limb cutter, a blunt yet strong tool. He has some questions however, since the wounds do not line up exactly the way they would if someone used such a tool. But at the moment he notes it's his best guess for what they're looking for. Portions of the body were also marked by wounds caused by a thin yet serrated weapon, much like a bear trap. Yet Santorini notes again that none of these wounds match any known weapon exactly; a bear trap is simply the best estimate. The doctor also says an animal could have technically caused the wounds, but no animal that he knows of could match the exact wound patterns found on the corpses. The spines of each of the victims were removed violently from the base upwards to the back of the neck. There is severe trauma all over, especially in the hips, shoulders, and ribcage. Santorini compares the bodies to ruined bags of bones and severed muscles. The spines were never recovered in any of the murders. Examining Hatvan and Harrogate in particular, Santorini offers his opinion that these two bodies were dropped from a large height, explaining some of the trauma. He suggests the police look for helicopters or some other type of flight craft . He does note that all three bodies were very likely dead before they were dumped. Lastly, he notes whatever was causing these murders had a degree of superhuman strength that is nearly unfathomable. When Vanassa is done reading, Stephen looks at her with some sympathy. "It's perplexing, isn't it? Before I came here for my pseudo retirement, I worked in NYC. We saw a lot of strange and brutal stuff in that office. But nothing on the level of this. [ooc]Vanessa can roll HUMINT. A pass gets the impression the doctor very much wants to say more, but is reluctant.[/ooc] "I did find some psychical evidence on the bodies. A moment." He unlocks his work safe and brings out several test tubes, handing one to Vanessa. Inside it is some sort of gray gooey substance. "That was found underneath the victim's fingernails. I have no idea what it is. I can't even make an educated guess. I sent it off for testing at Quantico, but they've not gotten back to me yet. Aside from that, no hair, skin, blood, or saliva samples could be found on any of the victims. But whatever this gray goo is, it's our only lead on who the killer is."
Nik,Doctor Feldman seems conflicted. But Nik seems sincere enough that he nods. "Well, far be it from me to tell you how to do your job. Alright, I'll wait outside. But please, if you cause her any sort of distress back off. She's in a fragile state now. The slightest push could lose her completely. Her name is Sandra. She has a history of depression, as I've said, and was on several prescriptions at the time of the abduction. Also, we beleive she can hgear everything we're saying to her. She's just unable or unwilling to respond, at present." He leads Nik to a second floor and past several rooms that seem more like hotel rooms than anything that brings to mind the word institution. At the end of a corridor he stops at one door, then knocks on it gently before opening it. A woman is sitting on the floor in the middle of the room, staring blankly ahead. Aside from the blank stare she's quite attractive, with youthful looks that haven't quite faded despite the trauma she witnessed. "Good evening Sandra. I apologize for the interruption, but I'd like to introduce you to Agent Nikolas Siilasvuo. He's here to ask you a few questions. We'd greatly appreciate if you could answer them." Sandra does not acknowledge being addressed. She just continues to stare blankly ahead. Dr. Feldman smiles sadly at Nik. "I'll be right outside, should you need anything." He closes the door, and Nik is now alone with the traumatized woman. [ooc]To get through to her will require some rolls. I encourage Nik to get creative.[/ooc]

Edmund drinks his coffee and compliments Mrs Maretti on it, (though it's not really to his taste.) He nods as Mrs Maretti paints the picture of her husband as a saint, Well he may have been but this seems too good to be true - a man without flaws is a man who has learned to cover his tracks well in Agent Rue's experience, or is it just the recent cases that have him so cynical and jaded.

"Where is his practice please, and does anyone else work at there?" As he says this he thinks to himself;
"Maybe there is someone with some information that could shed some light on this case?"

Thank you for your assistance Mrs Maretti, Would you mind answering one more question for me please. Do you think that the children could know anything about this? Edmund,Indeed, the coffee is truly dreadful, though Rue's host seems not to mind. "His practice is downtown. " She gives the address. "Carl recently took on a partner, Phil Cummins. He's been doing the work since... He was not there the day of the incident though. they generally alternate days. You might want to talk to his receptionist, Flo. She worked for him for a few years, and is still employed by Phil. "No, my children are eight and ten. I don't see how they could know anything. But If you give me your number, I'll call and let you know if they say anything to me." She does not looked thrilled by the prospect of discussing their father's murder with them, but she steels herself. [ooc]The practice would be closed for the day. Since you're going to be away for a week perhaps this is a good place to end it for the moment?[/ooc]
Vanessa,Stephen looks a bit embarrassed. "You feds truly know everything. Well, alright. Hopefully you won't dismiss this as the ranting of a loony old man. "I've been going over these cases in my head, and they just don't make sense. No human could have committed these crimes bare handed, yet the sort of weapons used don't match up with anything I've ever heard of. I've consulted with experts, colleagues of mine, and none of them have heard of it either. We're completely baffled. "There's so much about this case that is unusual. I'd have to assume the killer is some sort of animal, but none I've ever heard of. I consulted with local zoos, none have had a predator escape recently. I can only think whatever's killings these people is something with a very cunning intelligence but is unknown to science," it seems to pain him to say this. "Nothing else makes the slightest bit of sense, and it would explain the unusual organic matter we found on the bodies." "I've seen a few strange cases in my time as a medical examiner in New York. Prematurely aged bodies, Spontaneous combustion... but this, this takes the cake. Agent Marchand, you have your work cut out for you. But please, if you need any assistance I'll be happy to provide it. I'm very interested in what's causing these murders. Just please, be careful."
Nik,There's the slightest movement when Nik mentions Lauren. He almost misses it, but Sandra blinks, and moves ever so slightly. Then she resumes her catatonic state, but Nik knows she heard him. As he continues to speak, her breathing become irregular, and Nik sees her arm begin to tremble. She's very close to a breakdown. [ooc]Let's have Nik make a persuade roll. "I don't think you're a loony at all, Stephen," says Vanessa in a soothing tone. "I've seen my share of seemingly inexplicable things in my own work. There is an explanation for them, we just don't know it yet. There are surely rare animals unknown to science. They have been witnessed, but often scientists disbelieve the witnesses. These animals are known as cryptids. The Loch Ness Monster is probably the most famous of them. Plenty of people have seen it, but nobody has brought back proof yet. From the description, it may be some sort of remnant aquatic dinosaur - or more likely a small family of them, considering how far back the sightings go. Whatever is responsible for these killings may be something along those lines. Thank you, I will be careful. I'm ready to examine the bodies now. I'm sure you've done a thorough job, but a second set of trained eyes wouldn't hurt."

Vanessa,Dr. Santorini seemed relived that Vanessa does not laugh in his face. "Of course" he says, showing her the bodies. All three have been kept in some sort of solution to prevent any further decomposition. They all look hideous, the pictures barely having done justice to the grievous wounds. It's only Vanessa's unfortunate growing experience with this sort of thing that keeps her stable. Dr. Santorini points out the various wounds and which he believed to have been fatal. Importantly, all three of the victims appeared to have been attacked from the back, as something not quite like claw marks are apparent on each. After Vanessa has had her fill, Dr. Santorini shakes her hand and walks her out. "Can I give you a lift back to your hotel, my dear? I'd hate for you to go alone at this time of night. Though speaking frankly, I'd hate to be so either." He offers the sort of wry smile that hints at truth. Vanessa has a ride from Nik coming after he finishes up at the institution, though Nik had a cellular phone. She could call him if she wanted to change plans. It's around this moment that Vanassa's aforementioned phone begins to ring. Excusing herself, she takes it. "Agent SALLY?" A man says after a pause. He has a smoker's voice, deep and guttural. "This is MARCUS. You were supposed to contact me today after you arrived. I presume things are in order, and your failure to do so was not proof of any trouble falling upon your team?
Nik,Nik's words calm Saundra down, at least for the moment. But Mrs. Harrogate says nothing in response to his pleas. She blinks once again, but that is the only reaction to his impassioned plea. She continues to stare blankly ahead, not at Nik.

Nik,Nik's words are heartfelt, butt hey don't seem to reach Sandra. The woman just blinks again in response. She continues to stare ahead. [ooc]If Nik is out of ideas he can give me one more roll, INT*3 to get a hint.[/ooc]
Vanessa,MARCUS listens in silence as Vanessa briefs him. When she's done, he asks a question. "Hearing what you've heard, do you think this case is of interest to our organization? We think there's a good chance it is. It's why we called you all in. "The help I can offer you is limited. Keep me informed, and if you have any questions you're to go through me. Don't contact anyone else. The more insulated we keep this, the better. There is one contact I can give you. We have an asset working at the Museum of Natural History in NYC. He's not a member of our group, but he's consulted with us. His name is Dr. Jensen Wu, and he's an expert on what we'd deem historical artifacts. He also is as much of an expert on the occult as one can be without being tainted by it. Some might say he's even gone a little too far in that direction, but I don't make the rules. "If you discover anything here related to those subjects, check with him. He may be able to help." He gives an address and phone number. "Now, as for your objective, it should be self explanatory. Stop the person or entity behind these killings with a minimum amount of attention being drawn to you or the organization's existence. A secondary objective is to find a good cover story to satisfy the public, something nice and mundane. It's not critical, but we want to leave folks asking as few questions as possible. "Lastly, if you encounter any phone calls from other agents claiming to be within our organization, contact me immediately. Same if you notice anyone following you. I have to go now, be seeing you." He terminates the call. [ooc]No worries, the hazard of play by post. I don't mind, though MARCUS might. He's a bit paranoid, justly or not. :D[/ooc]

Nik,Sandra blinks once at his first question, then twice at his second. It seems clear to Nik this is deliberate. She still refrains from looking at him, however.
Vanessa,Stephen smiles. "It would be my pleasure." He drives her to the Excalibur Hotel, and despite his light flirting is a perfect gentleman. He's happy to talk about himself if asked. The Hotel itself is nice, located overlooking the bay. Vanessa quickly learns she has her own room. It contains anything she may want. Two Queen sized beds, a large television and attached bathroom, even a small kitchenette. A table is located right near the balcony, allowing one to enjoy their meal or coffee while enjoying the spectacular view. [ooc]I think I'm going to pause Vanessa here until Nik's done with his scene. Should only be a few days to finish up.[/ooc]

ooc,Don't worry, I like the investigating parts. Here are some questions along with an idea for further communication. "Was there anyone new in Lauren's life?" "Was the thing that took Lauren an animal? "Did it have wings"? "Was it large"? "Do you know of something in Lauren's room that can help us identify what took her"? "Do you know if there is anyone in town who might know about what happened to her?" "What word would you use to describe the thing that took her?" Nik will recite the letters of the alphabet, and ask Sandra to blink at the appropriate one. Hopefully they can spell out a word, or a name if she knows anyone who might have information.

Nik and Rue make their way to the hotel. It's a very luxurious building positioned overlooking the bay. Once there, the two quickly discover they'll be sharing a room next to Vanessa. It's a very nice room with a balcony, large beds, a small kitchenette, and cable television.

The party meets to discuss their individual findings. It also occurs to the agents that they've not had dinner yet, and they're all at least peckish.
OOC:   Okay, everyone's back together to plan their next moves and report on what they've learned. One quick minor question; will you be conducting the briefing in your rooms or doing it over a late dinner at the in hotel restaurant/bar? We'll say it's around 11 and the place is open to 1.

Edmund sees a standard dental practice. The sign out front reads Maretti and Cummins dentistry. At this time of night, no cars are parked in the spaces allocated for it, and no lights can be found within.

The party all reunite over dinner. The main kitchen is closed, but soups, salads, and sandwiches are still offered. And what few people are around are quietly drinking or carrying on conversations at their own tables. The trio easily find a table far away from everyone else, where they can speak in privacy over the soft piano music piped through the speakers.

As the trio discuss their options, a newcomer enters the dinning room. It's Sonja Dewey, the reporter who had harassed them earlier today. She looks as stunning as ever, and catches eye of the party and moves towards them. Grabbing a chair along the way, she pushes up to their table.

"I suppose charm alone won't cut it. Fair enough. Give me two minutes." She holds up her fingers. "I have a proposition I think you'll find mutually beneficial."

If all goes according to plan I'll impress my boss and the talent hunters for legitimate news. Fun as this is, I don't want to chase space aliens the rest of my life.

"In exchange? Well I don't doubt you three are persuasive, but I've been told I can be as well. I can check out leads for you and pass the information back to you, or assist your investigation in anyways you see fit. You help me, I help you.

"Besides, think of this as a way to control me. You three are my best lead at the moment, and until I get a better one you'll all be the center of my attentions. Unless we come to an arrangement
."

Dewey leans back and waits to here the group's answer. The agents know having a civilian anywhere near this case could expose Delta Green and what they're trying to keep hidden, but can they hope to keep her away?

"Pick up your tongue," Vanessa says to Nik with a sly grin. "You dropped it on the floor. We can't have her around, that's for sure. Maybe we can pretend to agree and send her across the country on a wild goose chase, ostensibly doing research for us into a 'similar case.' That might get her out of our hair until we can solve this one. We could put her onto the murders in Arizona. The NSA has swept that under the rug, so there's little danger of her exposing anything, but there's something real behind it, so she won't just turn around and fly back here."

Sandra downs the rest of her drink and swaggers over. It's a very nice sight, at least for the male investigators.

"Have you come to a decision?" She asks.
OOC:   Alright, whoever talks to get her to go to Arizona will need to make a persuade roll. It will be an opposed roll by Sandra's HUMINT rating. If both succeed, the higher success wins.

“Sit down” says Nik. When she is sitting, he continues.

“Earlier in the year we investigated a series of murders in Arizona, and we think that the events here may be connected”. He proceeds to fill her in on the basic facts of the Reservation investigation.

“There’s strong evidence of a link between the killer in Arizona and what’s going on here. But the locals weren’t always very open with us. There’s a lot of bad history between the FBI and the Apaches. You might well succeed in talking to them where we failed.”

"Really?" Dewey responds. Her voice is level, but the agents can hear an edge to it. An edge of eagerness, for a big scoop. "Where would this be? San Carlos? I always did think things got swept under the rug there rather easily..."

"Understand that this is the big story right now. If I go off on a fruitless search my bosses will not be happy. Nor will I. It's going to be hard to convince them to allocate resources to another case with The Chiropractor investigation our main story."

She appears conflicted, but the risk taker in her wins out, and she gives a slight nod. "Alright. I'll check it out. But if you fuck me on this..." she's still smiling, but no warmth reaches her eyes. "Well, let's not go there. To our new partnership." The warmth returns. If no one else has anything to say she soon after leaves. The agents are undisturbed for the rest of the night.

***

The agents awaken the next morning with several avenues of investigation open to them.
OOC:   Assume we want to move on. If you have anything further to say to Sandra/do during the night, let me know and we'll add it in.

Okay, you all have several leads to pursue. I'll list some of them here if you need a refresher.

You can go to Dr. Maretti's office and look through his files or interview his receptionist. Apparently she was there the day of his murder.

You can go to one of the victim's homes, especially Lauren Harrogate. She was abducted from there so there may be some clues.

You could go to the high school. Two of the victims had connections with it. You could investigate Vanessa Hatvan's office or interview her colleagues. Same with Lauren. There's also her boyfriend, Chad Jordan.

Or something else. And will you split up again or go as a group?

After a quick breakfast, the team sets out.
Edmund,The dentist office is open when Rue gets there, and he enters. The walls are filled with inspiring messages about how visiting a dentist is more like seeing an old friend, which he may or may not agree with. A few people are in the waiting room, reading magazines or watching tv. Edmund spies the receptionist sitting behind her desk, and approaches her. She gives him a professional smile as he approaches. "Hello. Do you have an appointment?"
Vanessa,Lauren Harrogate's home is a three story townhouse. Aside from the broken door on the balcony, it looks quite nice, and Vanessa gets inside without much trouble. The interior of the house is spotless, almost disturbingly so, but there are personal touches. Vanessa notices several pictures of Lauren and her parents. They seem happy. Going upstairs she heads towards Lauren's room, the scene of the crime. The room itself is large and colorful. Bright blue walls are adorned with posters of The Backstreet Boys and Hanson. Lauren has a shelf for stuffed animals and another for magazines, most of which seemed designed for teenage girls. She also has a television and a computer in her room, a testament to her family's affluence. Pictures of her in a cheerleading outfit sit on the desk next to her bed. The room itself does not look all that disturbed, aside from the glass door to the balcony which overlooks the street. This has shattered as if someone had crashed through it with extreme force. The broken glass has been removed from the floor, but the entrance point remains obvious. [ooc]If Vanessa wants to look around roll me Search to see what, if anything you find.[/ooc]
Nik,Glendridge High is a very large school, with an attached sports field that looks like it can support a few teams at once. As Nik approaches he notices several students out playing baseball. Ignoring them, he enters into the school. A receptionist greets him in the wide open entrance hall. "Can I help you, sir?" Behind her is a sign cheering on the Grizzlies. they seem to be the school football team.

Vanessa,Vanessa examines the room, and finds some sort of tear in the carpet right next to Lauren's desk chair. The agent thinks that whatever took her grabbed her here and there was a bit of a struggle. She also finds some of the gray goo that Stephen had shown her. There are only a few flecks of it that line the carpet from the desk to the balcony, but it seems clear that whatever took her perhaps "shed" a bit during the attempt. Other than that, she gets down to examining the room. Much of it is mundane and of little relevance to the investigation. When Vanessa's about to give up in frustration inspiration strikes her, and she looks under the mattress. There she finds a leather colored book that can only be Lauren's diary. It was a neat trick. Perhaps she had done the same when she was a teenager. There's no key on it, so Vanessa can read through it if she likes. The agent estimates it will take about an hour. But does she think it's worth violating the dead girl's privacy in hopes of a lead?
Nik,"Oh, of course." says the woman. "Take the elevator up to the third floor. Principal Harold's office is at the end of the hall." Nik does so. Along the way he passes a few straggling students either late for class or skipping, all of whom give him curious looks. Several classes are also passed, along with many lockers. One of them catches Nik's eye, because it has been written on all over. RIP Lauren We love you Angel Cheer won't be the same without you :( A few ornaments hang from the locker's door, but it itself is firmly locked. Continuing on, Nik soon finds himself in the administration office. Two students sit in the corner, both looking pissed. The receptionist here, a woman of maybe 70, inquires as to Nik's business. Once he flashes a badge she holds up a finger and picks up the phone. A hushed discussion follows, before she instructs Nik he can go into the office. It's a modest sized office, but clean and functional. Various awards and certificates line the walls and shelves. Behind the desk sits a large middle aged man wearing glasses and a bad toupee. His build suggests a former athlete who still maintains much of his bulk but is losing more and more of it to fat. He holds out a meaty hand and welcomes Nik. "Thank you for coming, Agent, ah..." he struggles with Nik's name and looks to him for support. "I'm Derek Harolds, the principal. "Obviously our whole town has been affected by these murders, but Glendridge High has suffered more than most. Lauren was one of our most promising students, and very well liked. And Ms. Hatvan, well, the loss of any of the facility is hard on all of us."

Nik advises the principal on the correct pronunciation of his name.

“I’m genuinely sorry for your loss” he continues. “I’m sure you’ve met with the police already, but they requested our help and so please bear with me. I might want to ask you some questions later, but first I want to speak to Lauren’s boyfriend, Chad Jordan. And I’ll need access to Ms. Hatvan’s workspace and office.”

Vanessa collects a sample of the goo for later independent analysis, then sits down to read the diary. While it may be an invasion of privacy, there is the possibility that the diary may contain leads relevant to the case. It would be worth it if it leads to solving Lauren's death - and preventing anyone else from meeting the same fate. After helping to torch an old lady, peeking at a dead girl's diary doesn't seem like such a big deal.

Nik,"Of course", says the principal. "Both can be easily arranged." He makes a call to his secretary, and a few seconds later a message comes over the loudspeaker indicating Chad Jordan should go to the principal's office. Chad shows up some time later. He's a powerfully built young man with wavy blond hair and boy next door looks. Unfortunately he's currently wearing a look of disdain on his face, and it is directed first at Harolds than at Nik. "What's going on?" "Chad, please have a seat here. This is Agent Siilasvuo with the FBI. He'd like to talk with you about the recent murders." "You think I did it or something?" Chad asks, starring angririly at Nik. It might have normally been intimidating, but after fighting cannibalistic alien parasites, Nik may be better suited for dealing with these sort of things.
Vanessa,The diary entries are thankfully dated. June 8th, 1998 My therapist told me this would be a good idea. He thinks writing down my feelings now that dad's dead will help me come to terms with it. We'll see. I don't think I'm the one that needs to come to terms with it though. I hear mom crying all times of the night, and more than once I've come home to find her halfway through a bottle. But I do miss him. It was so sudden. The next several months seem to be pretty uneventful. Lauren talks about teachers she hates, friends she's feuding with, and cheer practice. Another notable conversation piece is her boyfriend Chad. They seem to be on again, off again. Lauren complains about him constantly, and the only things keeping them together seem to be social status and the sex. Around four months ago an entry catches Vanessa's eye: January 6th, He said yes! I was afraid to even talk about my crush before because it sounded so silly, but I was right, he was into me. He told me we have to be careful though. I can meet him after school but I have to be careful not to smile at him or anything during. I don't want to get T in trouble. But I'm shaking right now, I can't even explain! Jan. 14th So hard to pretend I still like Chad. I sit with him at lunch and listen to him drone on and on, and of course he can't keep his hands off of me. But I really want to talk to T. Feb. 4th Went to T's house today. We slept in his bed and he told me "One day this will be our life." Then we just cuddled and talked for an hour before I had to leave. He's perfect. March 16th, Chad is starting to get suspicious. He wanted to know where I was last night. I made out with him to shut him up, but that's not working anymore. Why can't he understand what we had was over? But T says I should stay with him as cover. April 4th T says he's almost ready to leave his wife. Once I graduate he says we can start seeing each other more frequently. He promises me we'll get married once enough time has passed. It's so frustrating having to wait, but I don't want to get him in trouble. They go on and on. It seems pretty clear Lauren was having a relationship she was trying to keep secret. Vanassa checks her last entry and finds it to be a mundane retelling of a class project she was working on two days before her murder.
Edmund,"Yes, I'm Flo." the receptionist says, growing somber at Edmund's words."Thank you for your condolences. He was a good boss. I don't think I know anything useful, but I'm happy to help in any way I can. "Dr. Cummins is booked all day, and was not here the day of Dr. Maretti's murder, but I'll try and get him out here for a few minutes. As for the appointment books, of course. And I can take a brief break." She gets him the appointment book. Looking through it, Edmund sees the list of patients who had appointments the day of Maretti's murder: Lucilie Montana- Cleaning Martin Randall- Cavities and cleaning Seth Hale- Root Canel surgery Thomas Dengler- Cleaning Reina Hoover- Tooth removal Mark Corvi- Gum care Besides each name is a phone number. Flo makes herself available for questioning.

Vanessa calls Nik to fill him in. "I found Lauren's diary," she reports. "She was having an affair with a married man she refers to only as T. Maybe he's even a teacher. She was stringing Chad along, but he was starting to suspect something. T promised her that he would leave his wife and marry her once enough time had passed, but I wouldn't believe that for a second. Also, her father died suddenly last year. I'll look into how that happened."

Edmund,There don't seem to be any common names or patterns to go by. A few people came in more than once within the period, usually for more complex procedures such as root canals. Edmund makes a note of them, but none of these "regulars" were seen the day of the murder. Flo offers her feedback. "As far as I can tell it was an ordinary day. None of the patients really stood out, and in the few weeks before Dr. Maretti's death we didn't have any trouble with people not paying their bills or complaints or anything like that. I left the office at just after 5, Doc was finishing up on the last patient. He seemed jovial. Nothing seemed to trouble him."
Vanessa,The medical examiner is pleased to hear from her. "Can't stay away from me, can you my dear?" he asks, chuckling softly. "Ah yes. Peter Harrogate died after a brief battle with an aggressive form of lung cancer. It ran in his family, so it seemed to be to me an open and shut autopsy. Nik,"Of course I want to know who killed her!" Chad explodes. "I loved Lauren, okay? And when I find out who killed her I'm going to..." he stops, probably realizing confessing to premeditated murder to an FBI agent is not the wisest move. "We had our problems, alright? Lauren... she was a free spirit, but she was also a very assertive person. I'm the same, we clashed more than once. We broke up a few times but we were really giving it a try this last time. But Lauren, she," he looks hesitant here, "she lost interest. Those last few month she wasn't into me. She'd skip dates and when she was here it was clear her mind was elsewhere. Whenever I questioned her she tried to distract me with sex. It worked for awhile. But I knew she was running around on me, and since she wouldn't tell me I did the same. Of course when I do it she gets mad. She was always the jealous type, but it's an insane double standard, you know?" He looks at Nik. "Well, you probably don't." "So yeah, when she died we were not in a good place. I was planning to break it off with her. But I did care about her, and didn't want to see her dead. And I have no idea who she was seeing or if they killed her."
Vanessa,"Oh yes. A pack a day as a matter of fact. He really checked all the boxes. But he was young, probably thought himself invisible if you'll, ah, forgive my psychoanalysis, Agent. "I'll be happy to check in on him for you though."
Edmund,Rue has to wait for a bit, as the Dr. is with a patient. Unfortunately it is a wasted attempt, or seems to be; Dr. Cummins has little to add. He had not been in on the day of the murder. He rarely saw Dr. Maretti, he and Carl worked different days, and his hiring was designed to allow Dr. Maretti to slowly begin to transition into retirement. He does say that none of the patients were particularly troublesome, including the ones Dr. Maretti saw the day of his murder. "Sure, we have a few that drag their feet on paying, but none of them strike me as murders. Besides, Carl was not killed here. Maybe it was a random act of violence and not at all related to the practice?" [ooc]What would Rue like to do now?[/ooc]

Nik,Yeah, last year. And not really. She was out for a week but when she came back she was all smiles. I brought it up, once when we were alone. But she told me to drop it so I did. That was Lauren. She kept to herself. Maybe it's why I liked her." Chad looks thoughtful for a moment, before the disdainful expression comes back. "Anyway, can I go now?"
Vanessa,The agent makes her way to Vanassa Hatvan's house. It's located on a quiet street in the nice part of town(and given all of Glendridge is more or less nice, that's saying something.) It's a large two story townhome. Vanessa's first thought was that something this nice in this area could probably not be afforded on a school librarian's salary. The home itself is neat but rather Spartan, and does not seem partially lived in. There are few personal touches. Some pictures of Vanessa show her with two older people who may be her parents. Others show her with a cat, a little black thing. These are the only pictures in which she smiles. But there's no sign of the cat now. The only room Vanassa finds of note is a study. Unsurprisingly for a librarian, books line the shelves, most of them historical texts. A computer sits upon the desk of this room. It does not seem password protected. Vanessa,A search of the study finds nothing, so Vanessa examines the computer. She find several word documents have been written in. Opening one up at random, she begins to read: Hailey struggled as the pirate leered over her. She was his prisoner now, and knew that he would enjoy taking her womanly virtue. The pirate leaned in, his breath hot against her bare neck. "You shiver my timbers, M'lady. Worry not, I won't let my men touch you." "Good sir, we are a long way from port. However will you keep me from their carnal urges?" He leaned in and offered her a passionate kiss. "By making you The Captain's Woman." The name at the top of the document is Rebecca Hartford. Indeed, all of Hatvan's documents seem to be written under this name. All seem to have the same basic trope, the naive and inexperienced woman seduced by a worldly lover. Vanassa either knows(or can quickly look up) That Rebecca Hartford is a famous romance novelist. It would seem she just found out her real identity. Well, that explains how she was able to afford this house. While this is an interesting fact, it hardly seems related to the actual case, and a quick scan of the computer and rest of the house offers no other clues that would help to solve it or explain why Hatvan was targeted.

The attack takes Nik by surprise, but he reacts calmly. Waiting for Chad to swing again, he seizes Chad's outstretched arm, and redirects Chad’s weight towards himself. He slides his hand down to Chad's wrist, twisting Chad's hand back and bringing it up to his own shoulder, attempting to put him in a wrist lock.

Vanessa calls Nik to fill him in. "I've been to Vanessa Hatvan's house," she says, "which is really nice and very expensive. At first I wondered how she could possibly afford it, but looking around showed me what her alternative source of income was. She was actually famous romance novelist Rebecca Hartford. Nik hopes this won't all get blown out of proportion. He maintains his grip on the student's hand

"Chad here has some serious anger management issues. As well as poor judgment. He just assaulted me."

Nik's cellphone rings and he uses his free hand to fish it out of his pocket and flip it open. He listens to Marchand's explanation.

"I'm done with the boyfriend but I still need to look at Ms. Hatvan's things. He doesn't know very much. I'll call you when I'm done".

Finishing the call, he turns back to the matter in hand.

"I appreciate you might be dealing with some issues about Lauren's death Chad, so I won't take this any further. But if I let you go and you come at me again, you'll be under arrest for assaulting a federal agent. Do you understand me?"

Chad looks at Nik with hateful eyes, but relaxes. He seems unwilling to press the matter.
"Fine."

"No, it is not fine!" says Harold's. "Agent Siilasvuo, I apologize. Rest assured Chad will be punished accordingly."

"But he started it!"

"That's enough!" Harolds fixes him with a stare. "Now get out! We'll discuss this later" Chad does so, but not before shooting a dirty look at Nik.

Harolds turns back to Nik. "We do appreciate you keeping this under wraps, Agent."

It's around this time when the receptionist informs the principal that two more agents are there to see him.
OOC:   Vanessa and Edmund both arrive at this time
Vanessa heads to the school, and is shown to the principal's office. Edmund soon follows, having gotten a call from her suggesting they were all meeting there.

“Please go on ahead Mr. Harold, we’ll follow” Nik says to the Principal, so that he cannot overhear them.

As they are led down the corridors, he talks to the others. Chad knew about Lauren cheating on him, but he doesn’t know with who. It seems he cared for her, but he knew that the relationship wouldn’t last. It doesn’t seem like Lauren had confided anything that was troubling her. She wouldn’t talk about her father and he said that she had her secrets.”

“I really don’t think Chad knows anything about the murder. But he was very insistent on denying any involvement which was strange. He didn’t like my tone of voice so he took a swing at me. That’s the way these alpha male asshole types usually deal with their pain I suppose.”

“Let’s all talk properly when we get to the office. For all I know it was probably the Principal who did it. Most Principals are monsters, in my experience.”

"I promise we'll get him into it. Again, thank you for not taking this further. I'm sure Mr. Jordan is just upset over his girlfriend's death, though that's no excuse for attacking you!"
He heads off and meets them at the library. It's a standard school library. Some students are studying in the rows, though most of the group seem to be quietly whispering to one another. Harolds leads the investigators to the back of the library, where an office seems to be attached.

"This was Vanessa's office. Anything she kept in school would be in here, we have yet to clean it out. If you need me, I'll be outside."

The office is cramped and crowded, and school related papers are everywhere. Most of them seem to be general announcements.( the bake sale has been moved to the 4th...) And It takes awhile to find anything related to the case.

Eventually though the Agents find a ledger that seems relevant in one of the desk drawers. It contains Hatvan's day by day accounts of the detentions she gave out and the reasons behind them. By the number of names in her book, she apparently gave detention out somewhat freely. If the agents check the day of her death, they can find the notes of whom she gave detention to.

Amanda Krantz- Chewing gum.

Charles Sullivan- Shooting spit balls.

Chad Jordan- inappropriate language, backtalking.

Courtney Thorben- Talking during study period.

Thomas Dengler- Talking during study period.

Trevor Pastore- Sleeping during study period.

"Lauren talked about him in her diary," says Vanessa, offering it to the others if they want to look through it. "I'm more interested in this 'T' guy she was having an affair with. I think it's important that we find out who he is. There could be a connection to the case. We know he's married, so that narrows it down a little. We need to find out the names of the adults she knew. Vanessa Hatvan was famous romance novelist Rebecca Hartford. Some of her writing was on her computer at her home. I like romance as much as the next gal, but I don't really care for her style. I much prefer Outlander. Hmm...wait a minute, maybe there is something to Chad. He has a temper, and he had an axe to grind with two of our victims. Maybe he had something against the dentist too. We need to see if there's a connection."

"That couldn't hurt," says Vanessa. "I just thought of something else. What if it's the dentist who was having an affair with Lauren? That would wrap everything up in a neat little package. We know he's married. Perhaps T is short for Maretti. That would give Chad a motive to kill all three of them - and now he has a reason to come after you. Maybe the principal too. We need to cross-reference the dates in Lauren's diary with when she had a dentist appointment. He agreed to the affair on January 6th. We know he was reported missing on April 3rd, and Lauren said on April 4th that T said he was almost ready to leave his wife. Hmm...if it is him, though, she'd have noticed his disappearance and death and mentioned it in her diary. Plus, she did mention in her diary that T was there during school because she said she had to avoid smiling at him during school. So he definitely works here, whoever he is. Maybe Chad just thought it was him...or maybe I'm way off."

"Was there anything about a fight with Chad in the diary? I want to ask her mom about it. He was scary Marchand. He was so angry over a tiny perceived insult. He really hated me. But he couldn't have done the murders, at least, not knowingly."

He thinks for a moment.

"Let's ask the Principal for a list of staff. We can check who has an initial 'T'. And if there's none, we could check with her teachers both present and past. It might take a while, but if we sweat 'em, one of them might crack."

"And another thing, if we contact DG, we need to request some serious firepower. Light machine guns, maybe a grenade launcher with buckshot rounds."

"Good ideas," says Vanessa. "She didn't mention a fight, but she did think he was getting suspicious in her entry on March 16th. He'd asked her where she was the night before, which would have been March 15th. Obviously she was with T then. She was also in his house during the day on February 4th. Let's get that list of faculty and staff. We'll be able to tell a lot by their reactions when we ask them about Lauren."

"Sorry I was daydreaming there. I have got a list of the names that Maretti worked on over the last six weeks. In and of itself there is nothing that leaps out at me on the list. These are the ones that he saw on the day he died and what they had done;

Lucilie Montana- Cleaning
Martin Randall- Cavities and cleaning
Seth Hale- Root Canel surgery
Thomas Dengler- Cleaning
Reina Hoover- Tooth removal
Mark Corvi- Gum care

Now if we are pursuing this "T" the only one I can see is this Dengler though his name didn't come up on any previous visits, y'know for extractions or root canal work, that kind of thing. Although following this Seth Hale also has a "t" in his name, as does Martin Randall, bur their 't' is in the middle of their name not like Denglers, which makes them less likely. See I've always just been known as "Ed" and, as far as I'm aware, not been written about in a teenager's diary, so would I be shortened to "E" in this case?"

Nik calls the Delta Green contact.

“This is Agent Stanley. We’re chasing down some leads, but we need a heads up if you’ve dealt with this kind of thing before. A large entity described as a monster or a demon with wings. Possibly acting at the behest of a human controller.”

“We also want long guns” he continues. “Two M249s with 2000 rounds, including armour piercing and tracer. One full auto rifle in 5.56, grenade launcher attachment with buckshot rounds. Can you do that?”

Nik starts by calling Delta Green. Their contact MARCUS answers, and he does not sound happy.

"I will allow it this once, but in the future all contact to me or anyone in delta Green is to go through your cell leader. We try to keep things as compartmentalized as possible. Only in the most dire circumstances are you to break that line of communication. Understood?

"I've never had personal contact with that sort of creature. I'll have to make some calls and see if anyone higher up knows more. It could take some time, but I'll try to get back to you within a day or two. You might also want to try contacting Dr. Jensen Wu at the Museum of Natural History. He's one of ours, to a degree, and would know if this sort of thing has shown up in folklore and the like. Try to gather more information though. There are a lot of these things that fly.

"Do you have any suspects as to the human controller? If so, I suggest you go hard on them. Be willing to interrogate the suspect and see if you can learn anything, by any means necessarily. Do not show your face to them though, unless you intend to eliminate them afterwards
." MARCUS says this all very casually. "Sometimes our job requires us to be more aggressive than the law allows. Just remember, we're doing this to save innocents."

As Nik requests greater firepower, the agent laughs. It's devoid of humor. "I'm afraid the chances of us getting you any heavier weaponry is remote. Requisitioning that sort of thing leads to questions being asked, and that leads to an investigation that we can ill afford. Worse, it may attract our... competitors interest. The most I can probably swing you is a submachine gun, but not until tomorrow. Think you can wait until then?."

The rest of the team report to Harolds and demand a list of everyone who works at the school. They soon receive it. There are a few names that begin with T, but none that were seen on the list of Maretti's patients the day of his death.

Dr. Wu gives a soft chuckle. "Yes, that is my area of expertise." He listens carefully as Nik describes the situation.

"Hmm... not a lot to go on, I'm afraid. I'll have to do some more research. Still, I think you may be on to something. Tales are filled with sorcerers who makes contracts with "a being from the stars above" to perform their bidding. The important thing to remember is that there's generally a focal point to these dealings. It may be anything from an elaborate blood ritual, to a ring or pendent that one needs to meditate with to summon the creature. Or a spell that needs to be cast, a rune that needs to be drawn... the possibilities, I'm afraid, are endless. You may do well to first figure out more about how the creature or creatures is being summoned. Once I know the ritual being used, I'll have a better chance at tracking down what we are dealing with.

"Do keep me informed. And if you find the specific summoning tool, bring it here to the museum. I'd be very interested in studying it
."

Harolds seems to happily provide the information.

The transcript of Lauren's classes shows she has two teachers with a first name that starts with a T. Teresa Hernandez taught chemistry, while Timothy Thornton taught classic literature.

On being shown the list of names who were patients the day of Maretti's murder, Harolds shakes his head. "I'm afraid of that list only Thomas Dengler is a student here. A junior, I believe? If you'd like to talk to him or one of Lauren's teachers, I can arrange that." He seems to not think the investigators would possibly consider any of them suspects in this.

"Right" nods Harolds before giving the class numbers. "It's around 2:30 now. They should be teaching their last classes of the day, but given circumstances I'm sure they'd not mind you interrupting them."
Nik and Vanessa,Both agents make their way to Timothy Thornton's class. Presently he is lecturing a group of high scholars. The class seemed mixed. Half look bored, half enthralled "Chopin's work was really one of the earliest feminist texts. It's a truly interesting look at the life..." Thornton pauses when the agents enter the room. "Yes. May I help you?" He's in his early to mid 30's and wearing a fashionable outfit complete. He's pretty attractive. exactly the type of teacher who would cause many a young girl to be smitten.
Edmund,Edmund meanwhile finds the class he interrupts to be in the midst of some sort of lab experiment. Teresa Hernandez notices him and immediately walks away from the student she had been instructing. "Hello there." She smiles, quizzically. "Are you a parent of one of the students? I'm afraid I don't remember you." Ms. Hernandez is a stocky woman with gray hair and glasses. She looks to be in her late 50's. I am here with the blessing of Principal Haralds who, due to the situation, told me to come right away rather than wait until the end of your class. I'm sure you understand!"

She did confide in me she was having a difficult time at home. I did not pry, but her father recently passed away and her mother seemed distant, or so she said. Nik is beginning to get angry at Thornton's evasiveness. He steps up to him and looks him squarely in the eyes. He knows he's pushing it, but he figures he has nothing to lose.

"Listen to me very carefully. We know you didn't kill her, so we're not going to arrest you. But I will go back into that classroom and tell your students that you were fucking Lauren. The man’s selfish attitude incenses Nik. He takes a deep breath to calm himself down.

“It matters, Thornton, because there must be a motive as to why she was killed. And there are some people, unlike you, who actually care about that. So you’re going to help us, whether you like it or not.”

Nik produces his badge and ID, and formally introduces himself and Marchand. “Now, you know exactly who we are. If you lie to us again, I’ll arrest you for obstruction of justice. And then the truth about you will come out. Understand?”

Without waiting for an answer, Nik continues. “We need to talk in private now. Dismiss your class. Do it now.”

To Marchand he says “We can use the classroom.”

Nik and Vanessa,His escape foiled, Thornton follows the agents into the classroom. He is clearly irritated by now. He takes a seat at his desk. "Agents, far be it from me to discourage you from harassing someone other than me, but I don't think Dengler could have been involved. Alas, no sooner does Vanessa say this then the final bell for the day rings. Students can immediately be heard filling the halls. If the agents want any hope of catching Dengler before he makes it out of school, they'll need to act fast. The agents do know that there is an intercom system in the main office. Perhaps if they went there and convinced the secretary to let them use it, they'd be able to summon Dengler before he leaves. But the halls are crowded, and every second will count.

He holds out his hands. “Why don’t we surveille him? Try and find out more about him? Break into his place if we can. At least until we hear from Jensen Wu.”

"Good idea to keep an close watch on him, though there is no need to rush the surveillance on Dengler. According to Maretti's secretary, Dengler was in for a routine cleaning. I could swing by and see if there was any prior treatment, something like extractions or root canals. I think that it's unlikely that he thinks we are on to him - just yet. We can get his details from the school administration. If needed, one of us could get over to Dengler's house now and set up first watch."

“We can’t. Anyway, we don’t even know what he looks like. Why don’t we try and get his file from the Principal? And maybe search his locker if they’ll let us. If we can get into his house and search his things it should be able to tell us something more about him. Can you find out anything more from the dentist Rue? We can confirm if Dengler had a run-in with him.”

Nik pauses with his hand on the handle of the office door. “I’m thinking that this monster might be one of two things. Either Dengler controls it directly, using some kind of power, or it might be an extension of his unconscious id, like in that movie Forbidden Planet”.

He leads the way to the Principal’s office. “We’re gonna have to think of a story to spin for him.”

Edmund calls the dentist's office to see if there was any more information forthcoming. He adds a couple of names to 'hide' the fact that he is concentrating on Dengler.

"Hello there, Florence is it? I called by earlier today and was wondering if you could give me some more information on a couple of the patients that Dr Maretti dealt with. What we are looking for are the records of any treatment for the following, covering say the last six months. We have Lucilie Montana, Thomas Dengler and Mark Corvi. Yes I'll hold."

Re: A Victim of the Art

Posted: Mon Jun 05, 2017 4:11 am

Vanessa does not even have to offer any bluster. A smile and polite request is enough to convince the secretary to hand over the necessary files.

Thomas Peter Dengler is 16 and in the 11th grade. The picture included in his file shows a tall, gangly boy who looks slightly uncomfortable at being photographed. A parody of a smile is across his face, but it is heavily strained, and his eyes show his unease. The note indicated this was taken at the start of the school year. In addition, his address is listed. It's not too far from here, maybe a ten minute drive.

Edmund meanwhile cleverly requests three patients information in an attempt to throw off suspicion. The receptionist quickly obliges. She rattles off Montana and Corvi's information, and perhaps unsurprisingly nothing jumps out. Then she gets to Dengler.

"Thomas, let's see... The only thing I'm seeing is a normal appointment 6 months ago. He came twice a year since he was, oh, 4 or 5. He's a very nice boy. Scared of his own shadow, if you don't mind me saying, but I don't blame him. Some people are uncomfortable with going to the dentist, and I think he is."

" Of course," Harolds says deferentially. Nik gets the feeling he still terrifies the man.

The locker contains neatly organized text books, all of which seem to be standard high school fare . There's also a standard notebook, the kind a student might do their assignments in or take notes in.
The agents look the evidence over. The textbooks are quickly confirmed to be just that. The notebook also seems to be more of the same, detailing assignments and the like. But throughout the book they notice Dengler has written Lauren's name several times. Sometimes it's underlined, sometimes circled. A few times it's affectionate. I love you from afar, Lauren.

Near the middle of the book a few pages seem dedicated to writing some sort of poetry for his crush. One of the highlights:

L is for your lovely lips.

A is for your attractiveness.

U is for your unique beauty.

R is for your refinement.

E is for your energetic cheers.

N is for my never ending love for you.

This is not even the worst example of the poems. All are cringe inducing to one degree or another.

More recent pages of the notebook do not have these little asides to Lauren. But according to the dates Thomas has written for various assignments, it seems clear these notes were taken after her unfortunate death.
OOC:   Not sure what skill fits here, but everyone can give me an Art roll to examine Thomas's handwriting and see if it has changed at all. It might be able to tell you something about his mental state. I'm open to other skills being rolled if you can argue for one convincingly, but this seemed most appropriate to me.

“God!” cries Nik. “This is terrible. No wonder she laughed at him. Poor guy.”

He looks through the later notes. “After her death, he stops mentioning her. There’s no expressions of lost love or sadness. She just doesn’t exist. You’d think that if he loved her, he’d mourn her loss. What does that mean?”

To Marchand he says “Why don’t we go check out his place when you’re ready? What does it say about his family in the file?”

Dr. Maretti always tried his best to explain exactly what he was doing and when, and he'd talk the patient through their anxiety. It seemed to help." Florence's tone became sadder, as she reflected on the loss.

"I'm looking through Thomas' medical history, and I don't see anything more severe than a cavity now and then. The boy just seems a little sensitive in general, if you don't mind me saying. Most boys his age seem to be dedicated to showing how tough they are, but he never seemed to put up a front.

"Actually now that you mention it, I do remember he looked a bit shaken up after the last appointment. It was nothing too severe, he just seemed a bit pale. I think he was very glad once the appointment was over. I'm sure he felt better within an hour
."

Vanessa meanwhile examines Thomas' writing. Obviously it's hard to be sure, but it definitely seems to have degraded a bit in the most recent entries. Thomas does not complete all of his letters and they seem to droop a bit and tilt towards the side. This seems to have started after Lauren's death and rejection of him, but it is hard to say which he was feeling more upset about. But based off his writing, Vanessa does feel confident that he's been upset recently.

“Like summon a monster from outer space to brutally murder her? That's some broken heart.”

He closes the locker door. “Why don’t we go and get a look at his place? I want to case it a little. We need to know what we're dealing with cause sooner or later he's gonna go off again, and someone's gonna die.”

"I would think not," said Florence. "But some people do have a rough time with any dental procedure, no matter how minor. They see it as invasive. Even a cleaning may have made him a little uncomfortable. Still, I'm sure no lasting harm was done." Thankfully the receptionist did not seem suspicious. Rue gets the feeling she's more bored and eager for the chance to gossip.

Whenever the agents set out, they soon find Thomas Dengler's home. It's a nice two story residence, located on a quiet street that seems pleasantly ordinary for the area. No one seems outside at the moment, though several vehicles are pulled into neighboring driveways, and the lights from televisions are seen in several windows, suggesting people have started to come home from work.
The House,
The Dengler residence itself seems quiet. No car is parked in the driveway. The windows are closed and blinded, preventing anyone from getting a look inside. There was an attached fence to the right of the house though that seemed to lead around to the back of the property. The only other entrances seemed to be two first floor windows, each located on opposite sides of the house, and the front door itself.
OOC:   It's maybe 3:30 now. School let out at 3. No sign from here that anyone is in the house, though of course any cars could have pulled into the garage and the blinds being down obscure any activity from within.

Dengler's file did have contact information for his parents, including phone numbers. No way to tell if it's the house number or work information, though.

So, you guys planning to do some breaking and entering, or you want to just case the place? If you need more info let me know and I'll try to answer any questions.

Nik regards the house silently, thinking about how to proceed. He wonders if the answers to their questions can be found here. "I need to get into that house" he thinks. But there must be an alarm system.

"If we case the house, we need to make sure no-one's home. We can't let Dengler know we're on to him"

He is silent for a time, then says to Marchand, “Something happened to that kid, I’m sure of it”. He pauses. “I wonder if it has anything to do with his parents?”

He makes a call to the local field office, and asks if there are any criminal records pertaining to the Dengler family, including Thomas, and if there is a history of any crimes having been recorded or reported at their address.

Nik is fortunate to get a quick response from the local office.

He calls the first of the numbers given for the Denglers.

The first number listed is for Mark Dengler. Nik calls it, and it rings three times before being answered.

Nik

“It’s concerning an overpayment. Seems you might be owed a rebate Mr. Dengler! I can’t get into the details on the phone. Perhaps we can have somebody stop by your office this week. Erm… I don’t seem to have your work details on file… you couldn’t remind me of the name of your firm, could you? What time do you usually work until?”

Dengler's tone notably brightens. "Oh. Oh, I see. Yes, I think a meeting would be best." He gives the address and his employer, an engineering firm for a aeronautics company.

"I work until five, though recently things have been very busy around here and I've been working late. It may be best if you stop by my home later." he gives the address, which of course the agents already have. "My wife is usually home by four," he says offhandedly, "though I imagine you can't discuss any of this with her."

It's just after 3:30 right now, so the agents seem to be in the clear regarding the Dengler elders. Thomas himself though remains an enigma.

“Well, I’ll check to see if that is possible Mr. Dengler. I’ll get back to you”. Nik puts the phone away.

“He’s late, Mama Dengler will be back by 4. If you wait here and keep watch, I’ll go and ring the doorbell and see if young Thomas is home. I’ll get an idea about what security they have.”

He exits the car and hurries over to the front door, and rings the doorbell.

Nik rings the doorbell and listens. He can't hear any dog barking, which is encouraging. It made things easier if they had to break in later.

Soon the door opens by a person the agents recognizes as Thomas Dengler. He is tall and lanky, with a thin face and somber blue eyes. He wears a light blue sweater and black slacks, (both of which look immaculately ironed,) nice loafers, and he wears a necklace, the chain of which can be seen before disappearing underneath his shirt. He also currently seems to be undergoing an acne breakout. Nik can clearly get the impression this is probably not one of the popular kids at Glendridge High.

"Hello," he says, very serious. "Can I help you with something? My uh, parents aren't home yet, if you're looking for one of them."

OOC:   As Nik is talking to Thomas, he is looking for any signs of an alarm system, and scoping out the locks on the door, looking for points of access, that kind of thing.
“Dude!” he says. “Help me! My goddam dog ran into your garden! I need to go round to the back of your house and get her! Do you mind?”

Without waiting for an answer, Nik jogs round the side of the house, keeping his eyes scanned for possible points of access. He hopes to get Thomas too confused and startled to react assertively.

“Honey! Honey! Are you there? You stupid dog!” he calls out.

From here, Nik can see an alarm panel next to the door. It currently seems deactivated, probably was whenever someone was home. He knows it's a common enough for people to only have it on when they're home, especially in secure neighborhoods. The locks seem pretty impressive though, and he reckons that he'd have a hard time picking them. The back might be easier, many homeowners tend to overlook security anywhere but out front.

"Um..." blinks Thomas. But then Nik takes off, and he seems flabbergasted. "Hey, wait!" He quickly follows Nik back past the fence, and out of sight of the others.

Nik goes past the fence and finds to his disappointment there's no side entry into the home. But the path leads fully round back, where a large pool can be seen. Presently, it is unfilled. Sure enough, there's another entry into the home here, a see-through glass door that seems to lead into a back hallway. It's locked, but he thinks it would be easily to gain entry inside here if it came to it.

But that's all he gets to see, because Thomas Dengler jogs up to him panting heavily. "Um, you really should leave. I haven't seen any dog. But if it turns up I'll give you a call, if you want to leave your number."
There's no one else around that Nik can see.

“Oh shit!” cries Nik, faking a panic. “Where the hell is she? My girlfriend’s gonna have my balls for this!”

Without waiting for Thomas, Nik runs back out to the road. “Sorry dude!” he shouts over his shoulder. He runs down the street, calling for the fictional dog, and hoping that Vanessa will follow once Thomas has gone back inside.

After they meet again, he fills her in on what he learned. “There’s an alarm, but there’s a back entrance we can force access to. I propose we break in tomorrow, while everyone’s out. What do you say?”

"We'd need some way to bypass the alarm," says Vanessa. "Is it connected to the house's power supply? Temporarily cutting power to the house might work, unless there's a battery backup. If we could get inside, we can not only search, we could plant a listening device in his room. I don't know if he talks to himself, but it's worth a shot. We might also try wiretapping the phone. We may want to stake the place out overnight too, but we really should have a car if we're going to do that. Is there anywhere we can get a rental?"

“I think the alarm is connected to the house supply, although I couldn’t get a close look. Let’s get another car then, and some listening devices. And some night vision gear would come in handy. Why don’t you call DG? If those bastards will help”
Nik says, moodily.

OOC:   As it turns out, there is a car rental place in town.. It rents a variety of models, from upscale to the more modest( though in this neighborhood the upscale unit would be more likely to blend in.)

In order to save time, I'll say Vanessa can call MARCUS, and he'll agree to lend out three night vision goggles and listening equipment. He'll recommend you buy flashlights and the like at the local hardware store. They'll be dropped off tomorrow with Nik's gun.

The question is, if you guys want to rent a car who is paying? It may leave a trail, since you're technically here on official business. You have two options.

You can have the government pay for it, citing it as a work expense. Someone needs to make a Bureaucracy roll at a-20% penalty. Succeed or fail and you'll get the vehicle, but if you fail, there's a good chance the purchase will come under scrutiny or attract attention when the mission is over. You'll have to make another roll at that time to alleviate suspicion or convince your superiors you did not misuse government funds. Failure on that could lead to disciplinary action being taken against your agent, though I'll be honest and say unless you critically fail your agent won't be suspended or fired. But it creates a trail, and puts your agents more under the microscope on future opps.

The second option is to pay for it yourself. A car that would fit in around here would be a unusual expense, which means the agent paying for it will lose one point in one of their various bonds. Your agent won't bankrupt themselves with this car rental, but it sets them down the track financially and again, may make it harder for them to get money together if they require it for any reason in the future.

I'll let you decide which option you want to take. Then let me know if you plan anything else for the night, like watching the Denglers.

OOC:   Since this is the first thing you guys are really purchasing, I'll say you can all chip in, sure. No penalty this time.

And sure, you can take shifts watching the house. Feel free to come up with a schedule for that.

OOC,I can take the first shift. We could take three shifts of five hours each. That will take us from when we start (around 4 PM) until tomorrow at around 7 AM, at which point we'll all want to be awake. We can pick up some food for dinner and breakfast, because you can't spell stakeout without takeout. We'll all sit in the car, one in the driver's seat on watch and two resting and/or sleeping in the back. One of those not on watch can go somewhere else if needed. If anyone gets suspicious and asks us what we're doing there, we can flash our badges and say it's a stakeout, but not give any details (though they'll probably figure it's related to the murders).

OOC:   Okay. So Vanessa first, Nik second, Edmund third? Anyone have objections to that? Posting Vanessa's shift, but let me know if either of you guys want to try something else.
The team head to the local car rental, and pick out an impressive BMW coupe. Splitting the bill three ways they're all able to handle it, but hopefully they won't need it longer than a few days. Stopping on the way back for various foods, they park down the street from the Dengler home and begin to observe.

For the first few hours, not much happens. A woman pulls up to the home and parks in the garage. This would seem to be Eloise Dengler, though none of the agents have seen her before. She's dressed sharply in a nice suit and is made up quite well, suggesting some type of corporate job. She heads inside the house without so much as looking at the team.

About an hour later a man, presumably Mark Dengler, joins her. He's somewhat heavy and balding, and his clothes are not quite as impressive as his wife's, but by no means does he look like a slob. He too parks in the garage and heads inside.

And for the next several hours nothing happens. The blinds are still closed so it's impossible to figure out just what is going on inside the home, but the Dengler's appear tucked in for the night. By 9 in the evening there has been no further activity, and the agents are perhaps beginning to grow restless. But at least so far no one has seemed to notice them.
OOC:   Just confirming you guys want to continue the thrilling stakeout and start Nik's shift. You're in a position where you could see if anyone left the front of the home, though the back is still unobserved. Still, from what Nik saw there's no path out from the back, unless one of the Denglers wanted to climb a fence or two.

OOC:   Unfortunately, the hotel was covered by the FBI, so you're not saving anything by forgoing it. But the bureau is sure to appreciate your thrift. ;)

Taking some small liberties with this post, I assure you none of them will lead to negative consequences in game. Rather, I just don't want to have you have to post where exactly you go to the bathroom or such. Also Cearlan,to keep us going I'm assuming you're going along with the others, please excuse me if that's not the case.
It grows dark. The agents occasionally need to use the bathroom or get a refill on the coffee keeping them awake. One of them has the bright idea to recruit a neighbor into the stakeout. A quick knock on one of the door's and a flash of the badge gains the cooperation of a local, and the agents now have a base a short distance away. Nothing is told to the neighbors, (an elderly couple) as to their target just yet. But if they decide to breech it later they certainly could.

Nik begins his shift as Vanessa naps in the back. It's about 10:30 before he sees the front door open and Mark Dengler exit the house. Brief excitement dies out when he sees that the man is taking his garbage out to the bin. This task done, the man heads back inside, and the wait continues.

Nothing happens for the next several hours, and Edmund's shift begins. He's much more fortunate. It's only an hour into his shift, around 3:00 in the morning, when something happens. Albeit it likely not what the agents were expecting.

Vanessa's phone rings, waking the sleeping agents.

"Agent Marchand?" The voice is that of Andrew Gregson, the Detective in charge of the murders here in Glendridge. He identifies himself before continuing. "Wake your team and get down to Glendridge Hospital.

There's been another murder
."

OOC,I don't know if there's much point. If Dengler is responsible, he apparently didn't need to leave the house. OOC:   If any of you want to stay behind, do let me know.
It takes less than twenty minutes for the agents to arrive at the hospital. Flashing their badges to the receptionist, they're directed to the third floor, and a tired looking Detective Gregson. He's in the midst of a conversation with Detective Kathy Greenwich when he spies the agents, and motions for them to come over. Greenwich nods at them before leaving.

"Call came in about 1 AM. We don't have confirmation that a murder has taken place yet, but judging by the other victims I don't think this one's chances of survival are very high. Our vic was a local high school student by the name of Chad Jordan. He and Lauren Harrogate used to date, so we're treating this as related.

"Chad was on a 'date' up at the town's lover's lane when he was apparently abducted. His, ah... 'girlfriend' witnessed the entire thing, and she drove to a nearby payphone and called us. Unfortunately though she's delusional, spouting off about flying creatures and some such. Given the hysteria that Lauren's mother suffered witnessing her own child's abduction, I think we may be looking at a killer who's using some sort of chemical to cause witnesses to hallucinate. Yikes, we've been mostly kept clean of the NYC drug epidemic, even back in the 80's. But this is something else."

"Anyway, I've had Greenwich start a search for Jordan, but like I said I don't think he'll turn up alive. And now I have to handle the media firestorm this is all going to cause." he complains.

"We're keeping Chad's date, a Kimberly Talden, here under observation. Hopefully she'll sober up and prove more able to tell us what happened
."

On the way, Nik gives his thoughts. “If it is Thomas, this proves that he doesn’t have to be in the immediate vicinity when it happens. Whatever happens tonight, at least one of us needs to get into that house tomorrow.”

Gregson's eyebrows scrunch up in confusion.

"You didn't get the news? Huh. I guess us locals are more on the ball, for once. But this all happened so fast, wires have been known to cross.

"About a half hour ago I received a call from the NSA. They told me they were taking over the case, effective immediately. Apparently this has all been approved and cleared with the FBI as well. The agent on the other end told me that we were to keep the patient secure and under no circumstances let anyone see her until a team of their agent's has arrived. Apparently this includes doctors, and well, you. I protested, but the man on the other end of the line was very clear that this is national security related matter.

He appears conflicted. "I can't say I'm happy with yet another group of newcomers coming in and taking the case over, but I'm equally sure that these guys are not the type I want to cross."
OOC:   If you want to see Kimberly a persuade roll will be required. Gregson appears nervous.

Gregson looks genuinely conflicted, especially as the agents attest to the NSA team not having Kimberly best interest at heart. He weighs his options, but his stare soon becomes firm.

"I'm sorry, but I have my orders. You're to wait here."

"Of course, there are three of you and one of me, and my eyesight is not what it once was. If one of you were to sneak past me while I was engaged in conversation with the other two... that would be most unfortunate

Kimberly Talden looks to be about 17. She's a thin girl with sandy brown hair and big blue eyes. She is clearly pretty, but at the moment her rather obvious unease detracts from her beauty. It is obvious she had been crying, and even now she seems troubled.

When Nik shows her the badge, she quickly gets out of bed. She seems to trust him implicitly, and the agent thinks that she's focusing on the badge as a symbol of safe authority.

"It was awful. I can still see it, and hear Chad's screams!"

She looks ready to follow Nik out the way they came in. There is no other exit.
OOC:   Nik can make an idea roll here.

Re: A Victim of the Art

OOC:   It occurs to Nik that trying to hide Kimberly from the NSA agents would likely paint a broad target on the team's backs, and reveal their DG affiliation. In addition, Gregson would probably object to moving her anywhere else. Maybe it would be a better idea to keep Gregson watching for any attempt for the goons to remove Kim from the hospital.

Of course, he could go ahead with his plan. If Kimberly's life was truly in danger, getting her out of here might be the only way to protect it.

OOC:   We can move Kimberly to another part of the hospital while we question her. Gregson can give some story about her undergoing treatment and can't be disturbed. If the NSA only want to question her that's fine, but if they try to remove her from the hospital we might have to step in. What do you think?

Detective Gregson nods. "We've been looking over the scene, but so far found little. It was Chad's vehicle. The driver's side door was teared off of it, and there's a large dent in the roof. We also found some fragments of clothing from whom we presumed to be Chad, likely ruined during the struggle."

At this point Nik returns with Kimberly following close behind. Gregson moves towards them. "Now this wasn't part of our deal," he protests.

Nik

Nik addresses Gregson firmly and urgently. “I just want to move her to a safer room. Where she won’t be disturbed by visitors, at least not for a while. Is there a room like that in the hospital, where she can get some peace and quiet? Is there a doctor who can help us out?”

Gregson looks defeated, but nods. "I'll go ask. Can''t exactly argue with a doctor's orders."

He manages to find a doctor, and after only some minor convincing they're able to transfer Kimberly to a different room. More importantly, the doctor is willing to insist that she be kept overnight for monitoring. Even for the NSA, getting her out of here tonight would not be an easy task.

Thus while Gregson continues to talk with the others, Nik finds himself helping the young teen settle into a different room. Kimberly looks at him. "Do you...really believe me?" she asks. "II've tried so hard to tell everyone what I saw, but they think I'm in shock. But I know what I saw."

"Yes, we believe you" says Nik. "We've seen things too."

He gets out his notebook and pen.

"Can you describe the creature? Or maybe even draw what you saw?"

Kimberly nods and begins to draw. As she does so, she speaks, apparently needing the distraction.

"Chad and I had just started to....date. I had been interested in him for awhile, but Lauren was my friend. We were both on the cheerleading team. I didn't want to hurt her. But since her death we've seen each other a few times. Today Chad asked me out. He seemed really angry, though he wouldn't me why, and I didn't ask.

"We had dinner and saw a movie. Then we drove up to a private spot and got physical. Both our parents were home so... you probably don't need to know that. Anyway, we were alone in a deserted area. Chad had just removed my shirt when we heard a loud bang on the roof of the car. It seemed like something had crashed into it. We both pulled away from each other, unsure what to expect. Chad wanted to get out and look but I begged him not to. I knew if he did something terrible would happen. I told him to just drive away.

But before either of us could do anything something tore off the driver's door and tossed it to the side. And I saw some kind of...of, monster
!" Kimberly's eyes fill with tears and she starts to shake, but she takes a deep breath and keeps going. "Here. It's not an exact replica but it's as close as I could get."

"We both screamed. It reached into the car and grabbed Chad with one of its talons. He struggled, but briefly. Chad is really strong, but this thing picked him up like he weighed nothing. Then it flew off into the night, and the last thing I heard was his screaming.

"I wanted to help, but it all happened so fast, and there was nothing I could do! And I was terrified. I waited for several minutes before I got the courage to head back into own and find a payphone, and I called the police. But they don't even believe me! Nobody does
!" She begins to sob into her gown.

"Holy shit" thinks Nik. It's more horrible - and large - than he imagined. "How the hell do we fight that thing?"

"I'll fax this picture to Jensen Wu when the museum opens. We should update Marcus too."

He turns to Kimberly. "Do you know if Chad had any run-ins with any of the other kids today?"

OOC:   I actually intended for Vanessa and Edmund to remain outside talking to Gregson. But it's not really a big deal, we can go with this.
"Thank you," says Kimberly, seeming relieved to be believed. None of the agents can recall seeing anything like this before.

"No, I don't. He was in a bad mood, but as I said I'm not sure why. No one would cross Chad though. If I'm being honest, he mostly bullied a few of our classmates. He actually mentioned to me that he got detention from Ms. Hatvan a few days back for picking on Thomas Dengler. He bitched to me for a solid fifteen minutes that he didn't think he deserved it. Apparently he blamed Thomas and tormented him during detention, which is kind of a shame. Thomas is a good guy. A bit of a dork, but earnest." she goes on to mention other students Chad has bullied recently, but none are names the agents recognize.

“Excuse us a moment Kimberly”.

Nik ushers Vanessa outside the door. "Dengler again. We really need to search his house. Maybe you and Rue can go, while I stay here and run interference with the NSA”.

"I didn't mean now, I meant later. We can't go in while they're inside. Perhaps we should all go together then. We can get Kimberly's parents here with a lawyer. Together with the doctors and the local PD, they should all be a match for those NSA clowns if they try anything funny ".

"It's worth a try," says Vanessa. "It can at least slow them down and distract them. In the meantime, I'd like to head to the scene of the attack, since I'm the forensics expert. Either you or Rue could come with me if you like with the other remaining here, or you could both stay here and run interference for when the NSA shows up."

Nik finds Gregson and tells him his idea to protect Kimberly.

OOC:   I'll say it's a little after 4:30. So still pretty dark out. I'll let Rue decide where he wants to go, and he can fit into either scene.
Gregson seems receptive to Nik's plan. "You really make it seem like these spooks might want to hurt her. I'll do what I can to keep her here, or them under observation, at least."

Vanessa meanwhile heads out to the hill overlooking the rest of Glendridge. It's an isolated spot, both easy for teens to sneak away and easy for someone to attack them without anyone noticing. By now of course some police are on the scene, but they let her through without too much trouble.
OOC:   Feel free to make a forensic check, let's see if Vanessa spots anything on the ground.

Nik talks to Gregson.

“I don’t think they’d hurt her, but they don’t observe normal rules. They want to catch the killer, but they don’t care who they tread on in order to do it.”

He continues. “They will want to question her, but insist on as many people being present as possible. Don’t let them remove her from the hospital. She’s had a great shock, and the story she gives is just her way of coping with it. In time, she’ll start to think more rationally. It would be better to keep her here in the hospital until this thing is over.”

Nik,Kimberly's parents soon arrive. Both are quite shaken up. If Nik asks, neither of them have seen her since earlier in the night, before the attack. It is around this time that four men in dark suits arrive. All of them scream government. They look to Nik and the rest of the group with minimal interest. "Detective Gregson. I'm Agent Hank Bowers with the NSA. We spoke on the phone earlier." "Of course." Gregson holds out a hand. The leader of the group is a thin man with cold blue eyes. He regards it silently until Gregson withdraws. "And Agent... Siilasvuo, was it? We've cleared this up with your boss. Feel free to call him if you have any questions, but the short of it is this case is no longer under your jurisdiction. Recent events have come to light that justify the handover." "And what would those be?" asks Gregson. "That's really none of your concern, Detective. But the short of it is that evidence your medical examiner sent up the chains linked this case to an old army ranger. We suspect they're carrying out the killings, and given the classified secrets this person would be privy too, it falls on us to ensure he's taken down before he harms anyone else. "And what's this individual's name? My officers would appreciate knowing who we should be on the lookout for. As I'm sure would the FBI." "Unfortunately at this time none of you are cleared for further information. Rest assured we'll provide it on a need to know basis. Now, where's the witness? "With all due respect Agent, Kimberly's parents have expressed a desire to be with you as you interview her." Bowers' lip curls up in a sneer. "We have reason to believe Ms. Talden overheard important government information. The interview with her needs to be strictly classified. I and my associate here need to briefly interview her. Don't worry, he's a medical doctor. She'll be in good hands." "Mr. Bowers..." Kimberly's father steps forward. He has the build of a lumberjack, but the other man did not appear the least bit intimidated. "My daughter... well she's been through a lot... "Agent Bowers. And I understand your concern, Frank." Kimberly's father looks confused as to how they had gotten his name. "But this is a classified matter. If you like, you can all see her as soon as we're done conducting our interview. But I'm afraid I must insist. This is a matter of national security."
Vanassa,Vanassa examines the scene. As a fairly popular illicit spot for teenagers, she finds cigarettes and trash all strewn about. However she also finds a few things of interest. The first was obviously the torn off car door. There were deep gashes in its side, suggesting whatever broke it off required great strength and could have very well had talons. She also finds a few spots where there's some sort of strange grey polymer had dropped near where she presumes the car had been. She recalls the medical examiner had shown her the same substance collected at the prior crime scenes. More proof that the same person, or creature, had been responsible for them all. Aside from a few scraps of clothing she presumes to be from Chad, there is little more to be found. And if this thing could fly, it could be anywhere in town by now.

The agents are exactly what Nik expected. He speaks up in a calm and reasonable tone.

Agent Bowers, Kimberly has expressed that her parents and doctor be present if you question her. That right is accorded to a minor when they are questioned by police. But, wait a minute, you’re an intelligence agency and you don’t actually have any law enforcement powers, do you? That’s unfortunate, and it makes it quite difficult for you to demand anything. So Detective Gregson will also need to be present. And I’m not going anywhere until I’ve been told to do so by my superiors.”

He opens his hands in a conciliatory gesture.

“But if Kimberly’s parents and doctor and the Detective were present, I’m sure there’d be no problems.”

Nik,Bowers listens to Nik's explanation, saying nothing in return. But after he finishes, the man's lips spread into a thin smile devoid of anything approaching warmth. "Perhaps you are correct, Agent Siilasvuo. Fine, if this makes you all feel better, you're more than welcome to all attend as we conduct the interview. I will have to ask you all to sign non disclosure agreements afterwards if Ms. Talden reveals any classified information she overhead. Failure to comply could lead to jail time. Let's head in. The group heads in, though Agent Bowers holds Nik up for a moment until he's alone with the goons. "Oh, and Agent? I will be sure to inform your superiors as to what a stickler for procedure you are." That said, he and another agent head into the room. After Nik. The interview is largely the same as Nik had just conducted. While the silent NSA Agent examines Kimberly, Bowers asks her questions about what she saw and heard. Kimberly tells him the same story. If Nik looks around, he can see that Gregson just shakes his head, disbelieving. Mrs. Talden begins to weep, likely fearing her daughter was delusional. Her father, though, speaks up. "Come on Kim. I know it's hard, but enough with the stories. Tell the officers what really happened. Maybe they can find Chad and..." "I'm not lying, dad!" Kim's voice is loud and shrill. "I saw it! It grabbed Chad and flew into the air with him.! It wasn't a bird! It wasn't a guy in a suit! It was a monster!" Bowers says nothing, taking this all down in his notepad. [ooc]Please make a HUMINT roll.[/ooc]

Nik

Nik walks over to the parents and speaks quietly to them.

“It’s okay Mr. Talden. Kimberley has had a severe shock, and this is how her mind is dealing with it. I’ve seen these kinds of incidents before. She’ll be fine, believe me. She needs a good rest, that’s all. let her tell her story as she sees fit.”

“You should also contact your lawyer before you sign any non-disclosure agreement” he adds. “You’re under no legal obligation to disclose any information to these gentlemen at the present time. So get your lawyer to check any agreement out before you sign it. I would also talk to your departmental lawyer too, Detective Gregson”.

He takes the call from Marchand. “That’s interesting news Mom. But I have to go, I’m with some other agents right now. Call you back later.”

Nik,Nik is unable to delay Bowers further, but he's at least confident they won't try anything with so many witnesses around. As Kimberly gives her story, Nik notices Bowers looking over at him. He's trying to be subtle, but it's clear he seems very interested in Nik's reaction to the tale. Almost as though he's trying to determine if the agent looks surprised or not to hear it. And though he can't be certain, Nik gets the feeling Bowers is somewhat suspicious of him. When he reassures Kim's father though, Bowers seems to relax slightly. Kimberly though looks devastated. "You don't believe me? I know what I saw!"
Vanessa,The agent feels she's picked up everything she can at the crime scene. She could return to Nik, go back to her hotel, or go surveillance the Dengler residence once again.

Nik

"I do believe you Kimberly. But the best thing for you to do is rest. Your mind will be clearer after a couple of days."

Nik feels bad, but he knows that no one will ever believe Kimberly until they've experienced something similar themselves. It's best if she starts to change her story.

He turns to Bowers. "Don't you think you've heard enough? Leave the poor girl alone and let her rest."

Nik,Nik's answer seems to reassure whatever doubts Bowers had. The agent thinks he's in the clear, at least for now. But he's also increasingly certain Bowers had suspected he was DG for a moment. Kimberly looks devastated that no one seems to believe her. She begins to cry. When her mother approaches, she pulls away. "Leave me alone!" "Agent Siilasvuo is right. Let's give her some time alone. Thank you for your assistance, Kimberly." They all leave the room. Gregson shakes his head sadly. "She must really be out of it. Poor girl." "Indeed." says the other NSA agent, the one Bowers had vouched for as a doctor. "She simply is not ready to face whatever it was she saw. It's a common reaction to stressful events. But the good news is I'm sure she'll be fine in a few days, and her normal memories will begin to return." "Regardless, we're done here," says Bowers. "No need for confidential agreements, she gave us nothing important. But I advice you all not to repeat the sort of stories she's telling. A killer is out there, and the last thing we need is to obfuscate that fact and give him more cover." "OF course." Kim's father nods. "Very good." Bowers turns to Nik. "Well, I think we're done here. If we find anything, we'll be sure to let you know." He gives Gregson and Nik his number, advising them to contact him if they see anything suspicious. Then he and his men depart. [ooc]Where to next? We'll say it's nearly 6.[/ooc]
Vanessa,Vanessa heads back to the house. The next hour and a half finds her wuth no new information. It's just after 6 in the morning when Mark Dengler pulls out of the driveway and heads off. Eloise and Thomas should be leaving soon as well, if she wishes to continue to wait.

Nik is glad to see the back of the agents. He wonders if they believed Kimberly's story. Probably, or they wouldn't be here. He returns to the room to see her, to talk to her alone.

I'm sorry about that Kimberly" he tells her, sitting on the bed. "But people won't believe us if we tell them the truth about what happened, it's too unreal. After a day or so, say that you don't remember anything about it. You're gonna have to keep this thing inside of you, and learn to live with it. My team and I are hunting the monster, and it will be over soon, one way or another. Don't tell anyone about our conversations. Try and get some rest now."

Nik thinks for a minute.

Thomas will probably go to school, but just in case yes maybe one of us can follow him. If he goes there with no problems, then whoever tails him can come back and we can search the house all together.”

Nik can see Kimberly seems to want to ask questions, but the girl wisely nods. She still looks rather pale, but Nik thinks she'll make something of a recovery. It seems to have impacted her less than it had Lauren's mother, though whether that was due to stronger mental fortitude or something else is yet unknown.

No one seems to tail him,and he soon returns to the Dengler home. The team reunite, and sure enough, soon the other Denglers leave the home. Eloise and Thomas leave within 15 minutes of one another. If anyone follows Thomas they find that he heads straight to school. The Agents can confirm his location and that the house is empty by 8 in the morning. Of course, it's also rather bright out, and while most of the neighborhood seems to be at work, breaking and entering could prove difficult.
OOC:   Let's hear your plans. If I may say so, this should be good. :D

If anyone wants a hint as to a possible plan(though by no means one you need feel free to pursue) roll Idea.

OOC:   Someone needs to keep watch, probably Nik. The easiest thing would be to stage a burglary so that Thomas does not suspect anything. Entering without being seen if there are still people around can be tricky, but if they have work overalls and paint brushes etc. that might give them cover. Turning off the alarm will be the difficult part. Do the agents have any skills for that? Nik has Electrician.

We should assume that everything was planned the night before during surveillance in order to save time.

OOC,Could we try cutting the power to the house? That might disable the alarm. We also may want to enter through the back door, as it will be easier to get open and less visible. Idea roll (55% stat): [dice]0[/dice]

Re: A Victim of the Art

OOC:
idea,I'll give two sets of info here. First, let's recap what you know about the creature. It's claimed four known victims, all of them at night. Each of the victims hurt Thomas Dengler in some way. In addition, during now two of the attacks, the thing left witnesses essentially unharmed. It seems fixated on its target and nothing else. And based on last night's attack, Dengler does not need to be on or even near the scene, and the creature apparently never has contact with him. As for the house... Cutting power is one possibility. I'm willing to say if Nik gets in he can give a crack at disabling the alarm, using electronics. Assume they have a sign for the security company out front, and Nik knows enough about the unit to try and disable it. Cutting power to the entire house is probably a bit harder, but if you want to try and do that feel free. As for how to get inside, the back door is glass while the front seems more secure. There are a few ways. The agents could simply smash their way in, but that would be high risk. On the other hand, if they want to do a quick search and cover it up as a robbery, this may be the simplest way to accomplish that. This also has the advantage that most of the Glendridge PD is busy looking for Chad, so response time may be delayed, even for a wealthy area such as this. They could examine the house for any open windows or the like. This would probably require a crit luck success though, the odds are not very good. They could also look in the obvious places for a house key, but it would require the same roll. They could try to lockpick their way in (dex*5) but if they fail, they'd have to make a luck roll to avoid being spotted. Another option might be to call the police and report an intruder was spotted near the Dengler home. With the death of two people connected to Glenridge high and a third one missing, people are on edge. It would give them an excuse to search the property for anything the "intruder" stole. The downside here is that they'd need to give up with a convincing excuse for why they were near enough to the house to spot an intruder, and they risk making Dengler suspicious.Or Bowers and his lackeys. So hopefully I've given you guys something to think about. Let me know your plan going forward and We'll see what happens. ;)

OOC:   Cutting power to the house would mean contacting the power company, which would give us away. Calling in a suspicious character and investigating a 'break-in' could work. We call and say we saw someone sneaking around as we were driving through, and then we discovered a break in, but back-up isn't needed . Only one of us should say we are present, as it might raise suspicions otherwise.

It might tip off Thomas that someone is onto him, but we will probably have to move against him sooner rather than later. If necessary, we can point the finger at the NSA team and get them removed by the beastie.

OOC:   Just two thoughts here.

Now I ain't claiming to be an expert on security systems, but I'm sure that these units have a back-up battery power-pack in there somewhere.

Secondly why can't we phone the intruder alert in anonymously, and if we happened to give a brief description of said intruder that just happens to be a match for Chad's then we could be investigating legitimately.

We could be in the station, thereby giving us an alibi and one of us could slip out and place the call and come back in before anything is mobilized.

OOC:   I think we might be able to disable the alarm completely - smash it if necessary.

If we're in the station and say that Chad has been seen here, it's sure to raise the attention of the NSA agents. They would be monitoring the police band. If only one of us calls and says they happened to be driving past and noticed something, it wouldn't bring much attention.

OOC:   Maybe that be even more likely to bring the NSA agents? We don't want to attract attention, so the less spectacular our claim, the less attention it will attract. If just one of us calls in, and offers to quickly check it out, I don't think the locals will give it too much thought.

OOC,That is a risk, depending on what the police say to the NSA agents when they interview them and if they recognize the agent from the description. We could give a vague description (or none at all) instead.

OOC,Yes, I would just report seeing a 'suspicious person', avoiding any description. Then report a break in, which we can check out. Search the place as best we can, making it look like a burglary occurred. If we find nothing or something incriminating, we can move on Thomas, questioning him and if necessary sedating him like Cearlan suggested.

ooc,Okay, so if I've got your plan right, you want to call the police and report a break in, then investigate the house. How do you want to break in? Just smash the back door and get in and case the place? I also assume you'd want to break in before you make the call, otherwise the alarm time may raise questions( why did it go off after the agents called?) If this is your guy's plan, I'll try and update it tomorrow.

OOC,That's not quite the plan. We're all going to be at the police station talking to the cops about the case. One of us (probably Rue, since he's had the least interaction with the police) is going to step out for a minute, ostensibly to use the bathroom or something. While there, he'll use his cell phone to place an anonymous call to the police saying that he's seen an intruder poking around the Dengler house before returning to join us again. He should use a phone that isn't linked to him. Then we can offer to come with and help check out the house with them.

ooc,That's the gist of it. We could also set up a diversion to distract the local police to the opposite end of town - a break-in at a local jewelers or some such, then we could offer to take the Dengler intruder on our sweet lonesomes, as opposed to having the local police looking over our shoulders, or worse, the NSA goons.

OOC,Sorry but I think these plans are making everything a bit too complicated. Is it necessary to be at the police station when we start this thing? There has to be a break in at the house, otherwise we cannot justify entering the property. If we go from the police station, we can’t break in, and we have to bring the locals, which may include the officer who likes to inform to the newspapers, and so we can’t search the house properly. And why would the FBI agents want to respond to a domestic burglary? Plus, we’re already at the house anyway. How is this? 1. As 2 of us break in, one other, who is watching in the car, calls in to say that they have seen and chased away a suspicious character near the Dengler house. They will investigate the house for any sign of break in, but they don’t need back up right now. That will give us time to search. 2. Search Thomas’ room first, and any other likely spots.

OOC,I thought the point of being at the police station when the call comes in was so that we have an alibi for not having made the call ourselves (which we're doing), and so we could tag along with them when they respond to the burglary (we can say that Thomas Dengler is a "person of interest" in the case due to his relationships with all of the victims, though I don't think that term existed yet in 1999). If we do the other plan, we run the risk of the locals wanting to be involved and showing up anyway.

OOC,But there is no burglary unless we break in – we can’t legally enter the house otherwise. If we go there with the local police and there is no sign of break in, they won’t let us into the property – there’s no reason or legal justification to enter. The locals will show up at some point, but telling them that one of us is on site and can investigate without help will delay them giving time for us to search. That’s different to actually going there together with them. Telling them we’re looking at Dengler risks them leaking to the press and tipping him off.

OOC,I am known for overthinking things sometime - (according to Mrs C anyway). We could follow honeydogs idea of doing the breaking and entering following a search of the house, especially Tom Denglers room, though I think little will be found there as whatever he has would probably be kept on his person, something like a lucky silver dollar for example. This gets my vote I think - after all what do we need with an alibi anyway? After all we ARE the good guys here ;-)

OOC,I think Cearlan's probably right. But a search of his room should give us an insight into his mind and character at least. SP - can I retroactively say that Nik faxed the drawing of the beast to Jensen Wu before leaving the hospital? Hopefully he might have seen it before.

OOC:   Sure, Nik could have done that. Dr. Wu's not gotten back to you yet, but he has possession of it now and is digging into its origins.

In order to get us moving again I'm going to narrate a lot of the scene at once. if I get something wrong let me know and I'll try to edit it accordingly. But because one of you passed an idea roll you feel reasonably confident the plan is solid enough to avoid excessive risk. From the police, anyway.
The casing concluded, the burglary on the Dengler home begins. The agents break the glass on the back door, and shortly after a robbery is called into Detective Gregson. The Agents assure him that they don't need immediate backup but are investigating the breaking as it may be connected to the Chiropractor investigation. Maybe Gregson believe them, or maybe he's just seen enough weird stuff recently, but he seems tot rust the agents to handle it, though he does tell them to report in with the results of the investigation and to contact the PD immediately if they need assistance.

Assured that no one from the police will immediately be coming to investigate, the team gets to work. The residence is the stereotypical house of modern suburbia. It's immaculate and well furnished. Knowing they have a limited window, the agents first head to Thomas Dengler's room.

This room is a little messy, but only just. There are a few book cases, the titles largely fantasy novels and role playing games. Dungeons and Dragons and Vampire: the Masquerade seem to be Tom's favorite. But there are also quite a few books about archaeology, especially concerning South and Central America pre colonization. Anyone glancing through the texts quickly learns that these books are very advanced for a high school student.

Dengler also has a computer and aol instant messenger, though none of the agents know his password to access his chat conversations. None of the rest of the files on it seem very interesting; most of them look to be school assignments.

The only other object of note is found besides his bed. It's a large wooden chest, thankfully not locked. Looking inside the agents discover quite the collection of what appear to be artifacts. There are arrowheads, fetishes, dolls, and jewelry. There are even what appear to be a few knifes. It would take some time to go through everything in her,e and even after it would take some time or an expert in archeology to determine just what if anything was the pattern in here. The pieces range from incredibly well constructed to looking like they'll fall apart the first time a person picks them up.
OOC:   Can I please have a search roll from everyone. If you want to try and get into Dengler's aol account, I'll need a computer use roll, which only Nik apparently has. Ah, the 90's.

OOC:   I wouldn't tell the police that we think the break in is related to the case. One of us was passing and witnessed it - a total fluke. We can't trust the locals to be discreet.
Nik takes a look at Thomas’ computer but he soon realizes that trying to access the locked files will be beyond his ability. No hope there.

The contents of the box interest him though. He takes pictures with the small camera he keeps in his pocket.

“Dungeons and Dragons” he says, eyeing the title of the book. “They were right about that game.”

Vanessa wears the same sort of gloves she uses for crime scene investigation to avoid leaving fingerprints, and has made sure the others are wearing them too. She performs a hasty but effective search of the room.
OOC,We might want to tell the police that we think it could be related, but we don't have proof yet. They're likely to interview the neighbor who helped us, and she'll probably tell them about seeing us when we were staking out the house. Search roll (52% skill) in Thomas's room: [dice]0[/dice]

OOC:   I'll let you guys work out if you mention a suspicion that this is related or not to the serial killings, but I'm fine either way.
Thomas's password proves too difficult to crack, so accessing his aol account proves a dead end.

But Nik's keen eyes do find a note located on top of the dresser. It seems to be an open letter.

Eloise,

I was looking through the attic and found a lot of dad's old knickknacks. I thought you might like to have them. I have the house, and frankly with the new baby coming I need the space.

Feel free to keep what you want. Some of the pieces may belong in a museum, and I know New York has some good ones. Failing that, I'm sure some of the pieces could net you a few bucks, not that you need it after marrying Mark. Or amybe Thomas might like them. It might help to give him a connection to dad, and I think you mentioned how he was always interested in hearing about dad's career in archeology.

Give my love to Mark and Thomas, and I'll try to swing by soon so you can see your nephew.

with love,

Annette

Vanessa's keen search picks out a piece of paper. Dark with age, the faded writing seems to serve as an inventory to what was in the box. With this, the agent is quickly able to scan the box's contents. Most of the pieces seem to be remaining, save one listed only as a Chimu Clay Necklace. A little box it must have been stored in now contains no trace of the artifact.
OOC:   Nik can make an idea roll.

Nik regards the letter for some moments, thinking about its significance.

He goes to Vanessa to compare. Thomas was wearing a chain when I saw him” he recalls. “It might be this necklace.”

He takes pictures of the note and letter, and then of the books on the shelves. He then starts to look more closely at the authors. Perhaps if more than one are written by the same person, it could be Thomas’ grandfather. He guesses that these are probably from the archaeologist’s collection.

OOC:   HoneyDog's a perceptive player. Turns out he did not need my clue. The idea roll was just to have him remember Thomas had been wearing a necklace. Well done. :D
Nik examines the books. Of course, he does not know Thomas' grandfather's name, though it was not likely to be Dengler. There are half a dozen authors it could be, if the man even wrote to begin with. Most of the books are written by different individuals, preventing any connection along those lines either. The lion's share of the collection is fairly recently published in the last ten years or so, and the oldest books only seem to go back to the 70's.
OOC:   If you guys are planning to leave, what do you want to do next? Contact Wu, head to the school, or something else?

OOC:   We probably need food. But we should see if Wu has found anything yet. We'll have to pass on Nik's photos to him. I think digital cameras were too big to fit in your pocket back then, so the film would need developing. We should report to the local police too about our 'burglary'
Before they go, Nik has a quick look at the first pages of the books to see if they have been signed or have dedications from the giver or owner.

None of the books have any dedications that seem connected to Thomas.

As the group leaves, Nik gets a call.

"Hello, Agent STANLEY, was it? This is Jensen Wu. I thought I would check in and see how your investigation is processing.

"I've been looking through my texts and believe I may have found something useful, but I'd like to have a little more information to confirm my suspicions. I don't wish to endanger any of you by sending you down the wrong path

OOC,Yes, that's worth trying! I'll edit my earlier post.

Re: A Victim of the Art

by Silver Priest
OOC:   Good thinking, but no. :( That is not the password.
"As a matter of fact, I have. Yous suspect it is involved? good, this confirms my suspicions."

Wu's voice takes on a lecturing tone. "The Chimu were a tribe that lived in what is today Northern Peru. They are best remembered for having a very well regarded bureaucracy, which they used to heavily regulate all aspects of their empire. This aided the Inca empire immensely when they conquered them in 1476. They co-opted much of the available governance and applied it to their own empire.

There is a creature that is present throughout the art of many south American tribes, but none no more so than the Chimu. The creature is depicted as a
hunched figure with wings, curving talons, serpentine hair, and off-center pupils in its eyes
." Nik understands this looks very much like the creature in the drawing they received.

"The creature was known as an Al-Apa, roughly translated to Silent One. It was so named because it could swoop out of the sky, grab its prey, and disappear within a matter of moments. What is truly fascinating is that accounts speak of this creature as though it were real. South American cultures tended to differentiate between real creatures and mythological ones which only served to teach a lesson.

"The creature itself seems to have interacted with humanity quite often. Tales tell that the Chimu found themselves able to summon the creature and use them for construction and labor. They were often used in battle against the tribe's foes. The exact summoning ritual has been lost to time, but apparently one would create a type of necklace and bond their soul with the Al-Apa in a perversion of "marriage." In exchange for it services, the Al-Apa would receive victims to feast on. Tales tell that many of the slaves the tribe captured were fed to the beasts. By the end of their civilization the relationship between the Chima and Al-Apa seems to have broken down, which may explained why they were conquered.

"In any event, I strongly suspect one of these necklaces has fallen into the hands of someone today, and is begin used to commit the grisly murders you've all been tasked with stopping. Stopping the creature is not easy, but there may be a few ways. The easiest solution would be just to destroy the necklace, but I have heard that they are nigh indestructible and have some sort of mythical protection. That said, there are other ways.

"You could kill the human summoner. As soon as they die the Al-Apa will return to its restand bother the world no longer. Until someone else wears the amulet and bonds with the creature, it will no longer be a threat. Secondly, you could try and kill the creature. But tales speak of the Al-Apa as a fearsome warrior, able to kill dozens of men before succumbing. Mind none of them had guns, but it will still prove a risky undertaking.

"There is another option, but it too is not without risk, and I would only ask you to consider it if you for whatever reason you do not feel either of the first two options can be carried out
."
OOC:   For the sake of bringing the others in, I assume Nik will quickly inform them of what Wu is telling him.

Re: A Victim of the Art

Posted: Sat Jul 01, 2017 8:08 pm

OOC:   Alas, that is not the password either.
"Very well. There is a man I have traded with on occasion that may be able to assist you. In fact I'm sure he will be able to. His name is Stephen Alzis. He runs a club in NYC.

"But that is not all he does. He's also the leader of a crime syndicate. Your organization and his have a, well, difficult history. But they have largely agreed to stay out of each other's way. Still, I do not believe your superiors would clear a meeting with him. If you wanted to meet with him you would have to keep it quiet.

"He also would not assist you for free. I've had dealings with him, and found him to be quite helpful. But he always requires something in return. I know not what this would be."

"Still, if you would like I can arrange a meeting with him. But I urge you to discuss amongst yourself which option you'd feel most comfortable pursuing."

OOC,That may sound easier, but there are a number of problems with that. It might be better for one of us to provoke Thomas so that he'll send the creature tonight, then be ready and waiting to ambush it. We have the shotgun, and the SMG is arriving today as well.

OOC,If we want to proceed, Nik will acquiesce to Vanessa as she is team leader, despite some misgivings.
Nik

I'm talking about murdering Thomas, which of course is risky for us as we can get caught, but is also morally wrong. He's just a teenager. But he's responsible for the deaths of four people, for no real reason. If we kill the monster he still needs to be made accountable, doesn't he?

Nik looks out the window of the car. "Going up against the monster with just small arms is far more risky. If we fail, Thomas is free to continue killing. And he's probably not going to stop."

"I'll do him. There'll be no blowback on you two. You don't even have to help me."

"If we do kill the monster," says Vanessa, "perhaps we could tip off the NSA about Thomas anonymously, but I couldn't be sure what they'd do about him. If we kill him, though, that leaves a lot of questions for others to ask. We could make it look like the monster did it, or perhaps frame the NSA. I was concerned that this would leave the case apparently unsolved, but now that the NSA has taken over it, it's not our responsibility any more."

“Those are good points. But don’t forget, if we engage this thing with guns, we’re still going to bring a hell of a lot of attention down on ourselves which the folks at DG probably won't appreciate. One option could be to get Thomas to target the NSA agents, say by ‘accidentally’ telling him about them. We could tell him that they’ve been looking at him, we don’t know why, and they were checking out his house. He might put two and two together and assume that they were the ones who broke in. That way the monster attacks them, not us, and we will have extra guns plus a cover story – we went there to help them.”

He pauses. “Trouble is though, how does he summon the creature? Does he need something that belongs to the person? Or just their name? I’ll get on to Dr. Wu.”

He makes the call to ask his questions.

"That's a good idea," says Vanessa. "We could make him think the NSA was responsible for the break-in. I'll contact DG and fill them in on developments, see how far we can go in moving against the NSA."
OOC,We did plant the listening devices in Thomas's room, of course. Perhaps we could indirectly tip him off about one of them, which we want him to find, implying that the NSA planted it. DG may be able to help with making it seem that the tip came from some other source. Of course, we won't tell anyone about any others.

Nik contacts Dr. Wu, who seems happy to assist.

"An interesting question. One I confess I do not know the answer to. However if I had to guess, I would suspect the Al-Apa would need a visual of the target. I am not sure if a picture would suffice, but it might. We've very little research on the subject."

Vanessa's call to MARCUS is notably less friendly.

"Shit, they're on scene?" the agent curses when Vanessa mentions the NSA's arrival. "Damn it. Alright, first, keep contact with them to a minimum. If you think they even suspect your real affiliation and mission, abort at once. Letting this become their problem is less than optimal, but so is any of our agents falling into their hands."
He listens to her plan. "If you think the kid is the source of all this, pointing him at Maj... the NSA isn't the worst idea. Just be careful, however. You don't want him to be clued into that you're manipulating him, or the other team to realize you sent him after them. If they're on site, their first and only priority is finding whatever is being used to summon this thing and exploiting it to their own ends. They don't give a shit about protecting innocents. Regardless, we do not want this creature to become an asset for their organization. The only worse outcome would be exposing yourselves to them."

He lets out a frustrated sigh. "You're team leader, you need to decide how to deal with this. If it was me making the call, I'd take the kid out quick and dump his body in some lake to keep him missing long enough to get out of there. But I don't have all the facts on the ground. So decide for yourself, but make it quick. If the NSA are there it won't take long until they piece enough together to go after the kid themselves."

"It might not be as hard as you think," says Vanessa to Nik after she finishes her call. "All we'd need is a camera with a telephoto lens, and we could take a picture from a distance. Since Cearlan's not posted for a bit, I'm going to temporally npc Rue and say he's gone to get the camera you guys wanted. I'm going to rule it's cheap enough that we can hand wave the cost.

Vanassa can learn where the NSA agents are and try to get an extra shotgun from them(keep in mind you brought one with you, if you need me to look up the stats I can dig them up) For this just give me a persuade roll.

Does Nik want to go to the pickup place and get the gear DG has prepared for you guys, or would he rather follow Thomas, stay with Vanessa, or something else?

Rue goes off and buys the camera equipment. Since this task does not take very long, he volunteers to keep Dengler under surveillance as well. Since he is at school this does not seem very difficult.

Nik finds the DG deaddrop is in a small storage unit in a row of identical ones. Inside a packed room of old furniture and used junk, he finds a package addressed to his codename. Inside are three pairs of night vision goggles, two stun grenades, and a submachine gun, a B&T MP9 by the looks of it.

Vanassa establishes a great rapport with the local police, and Gregson is all to happy to hand over a shotgun and some spare ammunition for it. He also confides that the NSA agent shave largely kept to himself, and he's not seen them since that morning, or has any idea where they may be currently.

By the time each agent finishes their mission, it's just after 1 in the afternoon. Nik and Vanassa have reunited, but before they can do much else they receive a call from Rue.

"Dengler just left school for some reason. He's on the move. I'm going to try and follow... hold on. A van just pulled up besides Thomas. He's approaching it, it looks like he's talking to someone. Now he's shaking his head. Wait! Men just jumped out of the van. They're grabbing Dengler and forcing him inside. They've got him inside and have taken off. I'm going to try and follow and get a location where they're taking him!"
OOC:   Cearlan, if you return I promise I'm not setting this up to kill your character. :D

I'll probably make a new thread for all the equipment stats for the various stuff you guys have.

"I followed them, I don't think I've been spotted. They're heading up to the town's lighthouse. Probably planning to shack up with Dengler and get what they need out of him." He gives his location to the other agents.

"What do we want to do? Sounds like they're going to take care of our Dengler problem for us. Should we intervene?"

"They've made the connection then" Nik says to Vanessa. "They probably want to get Thomas to summon the creature. Does it come out during the day, though? They'll want to capture it. I guess we need to be ready to strike, but if we start firing at the monster, they'll fire on us."

He thinks furiously for a plan. "If they're all inside the lighthouse, monster, Thomas, and agents, let's burn it down. Kill them all. I'm not kidding around. I'll do it and give you guys plausible deniability."

"That may be the best option in a bad situation," says Vanessa. "We can always blame what happens on the NSA if they're not around to contradict us. They figured things out awfully fast. Guess we don't need the camera after all. One thing we may have going for us is that if Thomas does summon the creature, he'll probably direct it at them. If he does it for relatively minor things, he wouldn't be able to resist siccing it on the guys who kidnapped him."

“I think so too. They’ll probably have someone on guard so we should approach by foot. We can use the camera’s telephoto lens to check the lay of the land. The monster probably hasn’t shown up yet.”

By the time the other agents arrive at Rue's location, it has started to lightly rain.

Rue meets them and explains that the van headed up the path to the lighthouse, a half mile or so away. There;s nothing else any of the agents can see in that direction, so it seems a safe bet that they took Dengler there.

The trio get out of the car and walk the last part of the path on foot. Using their brand new camera, Nik's able to determine that there is apparently no agent left on lookout anywhere they can see, and as they aproach, there are no immediate cries of alarm or sounds of gunfire. They're probably safe for now.

The lighthouse itself stands tall and proud. It seems reasonably old, and while none of the agents are experts, a guess of around the mid 19th century seemed to fit with its time of construction. The only exit seems to be the tall door that also serves as the entrance. The top of the lighthouse contains the lookout, which one could theoretically leap out of if the building was on fire, but it's up far enough surviving the fall would be unlikely.

The only other object of note is the van. It's parked on the side of the road, half concealed by bush. Rue confirms it's the vehicle he saw abduct Thomas. Presently all the doors are closed.

The rain is beginning to pick up, but that's the only thing troubling the agents at the moment.

Nik finds all of the van's doors locked firmly. It would seem entry will prove difficult.

Another way occurs to him, however. The black tinted glass windows seem breakable. If he wanted to he could toss a rock through it and perhaps gain entry that way. However, there was no guarantee the van was not alarmed for exactly that situation. If they were, they'd lose any advantage they may have had. But there may be gear inside that could prove useful. It was up to them to decide if they wanted to try and gain entry.

Rue follows, bringing the spare shotgun with him.

The lighthouse door is unlocked, and only gives a small creak as the trio slip in. On the walls are historical plaques; apparently this was a landmark of sorts. A long winding staircase leads up and out of sight, and voices immediately grab the agent's attention. It is impossible to fully make out what they are saying, but Nik believes one of the voices belongs to Thomas. He seems panicked and protesting.

The voice that responds is a good deal quieter, and his words echo off the walls and form into no cohesive speech. They'll need to start up the stairs if they want to decipher what is being said.

Rue turns to the others and whispers. "We want to try and get the drop on them? There were four of them, not to mention the kid. But if we're able to sneak up there and our shots are accurate, we may have a chance. Or we could try and stick with the plan to burn this place down. Or maybe we could cause a distraction and split the group up."

He waits for the others feedback.

Vanessa nods yet again. "I'll go up part of the way," she whispers, "since I've had some training. Hopefully I can get close enough to overhear them. They'd probably hear all of us, but they might not hear just me. If they do make me, we'll have to rush them."

Vanessa make sit about halfway up the long stairway before the voices become clear. She stops where she is for the moment and listens in.

The first thing she hears is a boyish scream.

"This can all end for you, Mr. Dengler." Someone says after the youth has stopped screaming.

'I don't know... I don't know what you want from me!"

"Thomas... may I call you Thomas? Look, you probably though you were being clever. You committed the perfect murder. No cop in the country could have figured out how you did it. But you got too cocky. And you have to understand, there are those of us in the know as to the things you're messing around with. When it kept happening we knew we had to investigate."

"I swear, you've got the wrong person! I don't know anything!"

A brief pause followed before another scream.

"It was quite simple to figure out, you know. Three of the victims were from your school. It only took a bit of interrogating to learn of their connection to you, and realize you had some sort of ability to summon the alien entity carrying these killings out. Son, all you need to do is summon it for us. We'll take it from there."

Senseless crying followed. And when the man next spoke, he sounded more frustrated.

"Look, Thomas. We need you alive to manifest this entity. But the state you're in at that point... that is up to you."

More screaming follows, and it seems the conversation has died out for the moment.

Vanessa returns silently down the stairs and rejoins her team. "They're torturing him to make him summon the creature," she whispers. "He's bound to do it in order to attack them with it, but they're talking like they can control it. If you still think it's best, we can start the fire right here, step outside, and jam the door shut to prevent anyone from getting out."

"Let's do it" says Nik firmly.
OOC,Now all we need is something to make a fire with! I'm assuming that we didn't have time to stop and pick up a can of gas or anything. Is their anything handy we can use? If the lighthouse is still functional, there is probably kerosene or something lying around.

OOC:   Sure, I'll say there's a few kerosene cans, enough to start a nice fire for the agent's purposes, and if any of you smoke, I'm sure you have a lighter. I gather you want to start it at the entrance way and bug out? That has the side effect of not needing to bar the door, although you certainly still can. There's probably enough junk around inside the lighthouse that you can take some outside and put it against the door.

If this is your call, let me know, and I'll post the resolution tomorrow. No rolls necessary.

OOC,The agents empty the contents of the kerosene cans around the bottom of the stairs as quickly as possible and spill a trail to the door, while Nik piles up flammable junk against it to block the entrance. “Why don’t you two find some cover?” he tells the others. “I’ll light this thing up.” He tries not to think about the fact that he is going to burn several people to death. He feels in his pocket for his matches, and strikes one, dropping it into the kerosene, and then turns and runs towards the others. I hope this scenario is acceptable!

By the time Nik is done the racket he's made has caused notice. The agent hears some of the men coming down the stairs, ready to investigate.

But it hardly matters. He is out the door before they can reach him, and the flames that erupt right after prevent any pursuit. Soon after the old lighthouse, the pride of the town and a monument for over a century, begins to go up. Nik and the others can just hear the scream from within. But maybe that's just the wind. Maybe.

As the building grows steadily more inflamed, it occurs to the agents that they may wish to leave, as surely the fire department would soon be here. This was going to be a tough situation to explain, but if they left the scene they'd at least not have to.

Before they can get far however, they notice something in the sky. It begins as a peculiar black dot, but it soon picks up the pace and begins a fast descent down to earth. It is at first identification a bird, but this quickly proves incorrect.

The creature is a large and hulking black shape with three massive wings. It has several forward reaching talons that end in hooks dripping with some sort of gray ichor. Six eyes lurk amongst its face, seemingly able to view every direction at once. It possesses a large beak, and its maw too is huge, its teeth resembling a great white shark's. It is barely identifiable as the creature in Kimberly's drawing, but even that hardly does it justice. The thing is utterly alien.

One of it's eyes seems to look down at the agents, but it thankfully does not pursue them. Instead the creature slams into the top of the lighthouse. Glass goes flying everywhere. Immediately after, screams are heard as well as the sound of automatic gunfire. This only lasts for a minute. Then the thing reemerges, blood and gore on it, but none of it looking like it's own.

And on its back, screaming at the top of his lungs, is Thomas Dengler.
OOC:   San loss time. As you may imagine this is rather extensive.

For burning five people alive, 1d6/1d10 for violence.

For seeing the Ai-Apa, 1/1d6. Remember your bonds for both of these, if you take more than you're comfortable with.

I'm pausing here to determine if any of you want to do anything, such as shoot at the creature. Right now it seems to be paying you no mind, and indeed looks set to fly up up and away.

Vanessa feels somewhat guilty, but she knows there was no better choice. Had they let the agents continue to torture Thomas, he would have suffered worse, and they would have gotten control of the creature. Had they confronted the agents, a shootout would have ensued. At best, all of the NSA agents would have still been dead and they would have had a lot of awkward questions to answer. At worst, the three of them could have been killed, wounded, or captured. She tracks the creature with her shotgun, filled with revulsion. "We could still shoot it down," she says. "Or him..."

Rue observes the creature as well.

[dice]0[/dice]

[dice]1[/dice]

[dice]2[/dice]

It does not seem to bother him as badly as the others, though he still looks quite shaken.

Nik finds himself coping with the matter by calling to mind his girlfriend. Thoughts of her center him, but he knows that he'll have trouble looking at her ever again without images of this creature coming to mind.
OOC:   No one has apparently hit a breaking point, so that's good. HoneyDog, subtract 4 from your bond with Nik's girlfriend if you haven't already. I'll leave it to you how the damage done to the relationship plays out. Maybe Nik starts to avoid her because he's afraid to get her involved in all this. Maybe he resents protecting people like her from this, and never being able to tell them of the sacrifices he makes on their behalf. (You'd also normally subtract 4 from your willpower, but it refreshes and we're close enough tot he end I'm going to say there's no need.

As Vanessa tracks the creature, she realizes that it's too far away. Only Nik had a prayer of hitting it at this point.

Thomas continues to scream, seemingly frightened out of his mind. The Ai-Apa takes off back into the air. It moves impossibility quick and picks up speed as its wings flap faster, and climbs and climbs. Soon it is just a black dot. In another minute, it has ascended completely into the heavens. Thomas screamed the entire way. Unless he could breath in space, it seems unlikely this fate is any kinder to him.

The fire continues to burn, and the three agents now find themselves alone.

Nik doesn’t try to open fire. The creature would likely make mincemeat out of them. He realizes that the creature hasn’t really enabled Thomas to escape, at least not in a way that will end well for him. Maybe it’s over. This calms him down a bit and he can begin to think clearly again.

He gets to his feet. “We should get to the car and get ready to help the local investigate the fire. An autopsy’s gonna show that the killer struck again, if any of the remains survive the fire. So we should be in the clear. If we help out, it will also account for any traces of our DNA being found. ”

He looks up at the sky, after the departed Thomas. "Hopefully those two won't be back."

OOC:   Alright, so what's your plan going forward? I assume you intend to leave the scene and return a suitable time later and assist the locals? And that you won't tell them of any connection you had with the events? You may also want to contact Delta Green and report on your success. If you do contact them, are you going to give a full report or omit any details?

OOC:   Yes, help the locals with the fire / murder investigation - initially . But that should be it - officially the NSA took over the case anyway so we don't have to be involved . We can put forward the theory that the murderer killed the agents then torched the building, which should dispel any ideas that a third party was involved. Then get going before the rival group (they're obviously not really the NSA) begin to look more closely at us.

As far as telling DG, I guess we should inform them of everything.

The agents leave the scene of their crime, and Vanessa calls MARCUS. He listens in as she tells them of the team's adventures.

"I see. You actually saw the thing? It sounds as though your entire team kept their head as well. Well done.

"It would have been better had you had gotten your hands on the necklace so we could ensure it never was used by others again, but it sounds like the problem took care of itself. We'll closely monitor the situation, but I think this creature at least is gone for good, along with its summoner. From the sound of it he died screaming. Good.

"It's also good that the others did not get their hand on the necklace. They'd have tried to weaponize the creature. It wouldn't have ended well, even if it did for them. Killing them... well I can't say I'm opposed to it. They've taken down a few good friends of mine, and as far as I'm concerned each and every one of them is a traitor to humanity who deserves a bullet in the back of the head. But they also have considerable power and influence in Washington, and a war between our agencies would be a costly one. From the sound of it no one should suspect your involvement though. Get on the scene and pull rank if you have to to ensure nothing linking back to you is found. That would be a problem neither you nor us need.

"Continue as usual for the day. Tomorrow we'll send non affiliated agents to take over the investigation. We'll send you back home. You won't get any accolades for this one I'm afraid. I sure wish we could have solved this neat and tidy, but we're going to have to drag things out and hope the public eventually forgets about them. Unless you're willing to frame someone and have enough evidence linking them to this
. "He does not sound like he's joking.

If there's nothing else, the call ends, and the agents return to work. This one wouldn't be like the San Carlos case. There would be no slaps on the backs or hints of promotions. Only a cold case. But they at least knew they stopped the threat here, and maybe that was enough.

***
The investigation late into the night. The bodies found inside the mostly burnt out lighthouse have not yet been identified, but the NSA agents van was found near the scene, so most of the cops have a good idea as to who they may be. This leads to many more questions, and much complaining and cursing from the locals as to why the stubborn NSA team did not share whatever lead they were pursuing. The general consensus seems to be that they were glory hungry and led into a trap by the crafty killer.

A few hours before the agents retire, news of Thomas Dengler's disappearance breaks. combined with the earlier home invasion, police are treating this as yet anther of the Chiropractor's crimes. The only clue they had so far is that the school received a call that day from a man identifying himself as Thomas's father. He told the secretary there was an emergency and he needed to pick him up his son. Thomas was dismissed, and it was the last anyone had seen of him.

Detective Gregson looks very tired, like he's not slept for days. He also looks as though he does not expect to have a job much longer. He finally tells the agents they can leave and go back to their hotel, and they oblige. As they enter it, the receptionist catches their eye.

"Ah, excuse me, might you be the FBI Agents? Ah yes, phone call from you. It was from a, let me see here,ah yes, an associate of a Mr. Stephen Alzis. He has an offer he thinks may interest you, and gave you a number to call him back at if you are so interested."

Rue agrees, and the agents ignore the message. They are interrupted and return home the next day. With the death of the NSA agents, the case is officially out of their hands. And for a few weeks, the whole thing becomes a circus that rivals the OJ Simpson trial. But then a suspect is arrested. Hector Gutierrez was a handyman that worked at Glendridge High. He soon confesses to the crimes, and spins a lurid tale so convincingly that the agents almost find themselves believing it even though they know the truth. If contacted, Delta Green tells them to drop the matter and cease any inquiries. Immediately after his confession the news seems to lose interest, and the Glendridge story fades from the public consciousness.

Nik comes into his office one day and finds a bouquet of flowers. The card contains flowery handwriting.

In appreciation for all the assistance you gave me on the case. It was a clever bit of misdirection, sending me to San Carlos. I received sun burn and food sickness. Rest assured though, I found enough to spin a story out of it that kept my producers happy. But I won't forget the "kindness" you've shown me. If we ever meet again, i look forward to making your life a living hell.

Love,

Sonja Dewey.

It would seem he had made an enemy of a reporter. He was becoming a real FBI agent. Though it could prove an inconvenience to his other job in the time to come.

Other than that development though, the case ends, and the agents return to their normal lives. But consciously or not, they find themselves waiting for that next call or email.

Their next night at the opera.
OOC:   And the scenario is officially done! Thanks for sticking with it. I'll post some closing thoughts today or tomorrow, and we'll probably start the next one in a week or so if you're all available. Nik throws the flowers in the trash and makes a couple of calls to Glendridge. He first calls Kimberly, getting her number from the local PD. She witnessed Chad being taken by the monster. He tells her briefly that it is over; the creature is gone and won’t be back. He hopes that it will help her get on with her life.

He then calls the high school Principal, and tells him what they found about Thornton’s affair with Lauren, and that the teacher had admitted to it. Hopefully it will be enough for people to start asking questions about him.

Vanessa is just relieved that it's all over. This case has gotten to her more than the others, and she knows it's not going to be easy for her to recover from what they had to do. She just hopes there's plenty of time before the next one.

Nik's call with Kimberly is met with some confusion.

'What do you mean? What monster? Mr. Gutierrez had a crazed look on his face, and his attack was so sudden i did block it out for a few days. But then one day the facts came back to me. I remembered everything. He came at us at gunpoint and forced Chad out of the car, then he took off with him. It was so scary, I thought I was going to die. But then after a few days my memory returned and I told the police everything. They actually say my testimony is what enabled them to crack the case. I'm just glad Chad and the others were given some justice."

If pressed, she does mention an eventual interview with the NSA, though she does not recall much of it. "Truthfully it was a bit of a blur. But after speaking to them I started to remember some stuff about what happened. Apparently I was talking nonsense those first few days about monsters, but one of the agents mentioned it was a sort of coping mechanism to handle the trauma. I'm just glad I never spread it around school, I'd have been known as some freak."

His contact with the principal goes a good deal smoother, and an investigation is promised. Apparently, it actually happens. The agents see a blurb on the news a few months later suggesting a teacher connected with one of the Glendridge murder victims has been fired and is being tried for statutory rape.

Nik notes with satisfaction that Thornton does not look quite as smug now.
