Puppet Shows and Shadow Plays

January 12th, 1999
Phoenix Arizona
The New Year had not brought with it an appreciable drop in the workload at the FBI offices, and every agent had a backlog of cases to sort through. Crime never did take a holiday, and each agent has enough of a workload to keep them occupied for the next several weeks.

So it is a bit of a surprise when Edmiund, Vanessa, Nikolas, and Chad all find themselves summoned into The SAC's (Special-Agent-In-Charge's) office. Each of them have met SAC Patrick Hobbson before. They know him as a stellar agent, well liked by his colleagues. He's a hard worker and demands that quality from his underlings as well, but he's never been anything but fair with all of them. Hobbson is also 56, very close to the mandatory retirement age of 57 that the Bureau maintains. He will be retiring in the next few months, and all know him to be looking forward to it. His passion for fishing is well known, and a running bet around the office is where he'll end up first.
Hobbson's office is neat, professional, and functional. The only personal touches are a photo of him with his wife, a calendar of "lake of the day", and a Garfield mug that reads Hang in There! from which he drinks his lukewarm coffee. He motions for each of you to take a seat across from him before getting down to business.

"Thank you all for coming. I know you're all eager to cut down on some of the work that the holidays have generated, but a...situation has developed that requires our attention.

"Have any of you read the tabloids lately? If so, you may have heard of the so called "Devil's Highway". State Road 70. In the last month no less than 13 individuals have vanished from it and the nearby San Carlos Indian Reservation. The National media is starting to pick the story up, and our aid has been requested by the local authorities."

He folds his hands in front of him. "Now I don't think I have to tell any of you that this situation is sensitive. If this is AIM's* doing this has the opportunity to become very politically charged. None of us want another Peltier*. So tread carefully. We're treating these disappearances as kidnappings for now, so you'll be under the authority of the local law enforcement. Advise them to the best of your ability, but understand that they have final say. We don't want this to become a turf war."

He looks down and consults his notes. "You'll have two liaisons on this operation. Major Frank Garrett with the Arizona State Police, who have jurisdiction over the State Road, and Sheriff Mangos Colorados of the Apache Tribal Police. You can also contact me at any time. I want daily briefings, given the nature of this case.

"Your first assignment is to drive out to San Carlos and meet with Colorados and Garrett. They'll be expecting you later this afternoon, and will brief you on the particulars. The Bureau is putting you up in the Apache Gold Hotel and Casino, located on the reservation. But this isn't a vacation, so try and avoid charging thousands of dollars worth of gambling to the expense accounts."

Hobbson waits to see if any of the agents have something to say, pausing to sip his coffee.

All the Agents can make a HUMINT roll if they like.

I'll let each of you decide if your agents have worked together in the past and in what capacity. You probably all know each other by reputation at least, or awkward talk around the water cooler.

Stanyard smiles at the AIM reference. "I almost thought we had with some mercenaries on our hands. Anyway, it will be great to get out of this office. Didn't want this to turn in to an Assault on Precinct 13 - situation." He straightens his posture and adds, "Do we have those missing people on file?" He looks at Rue and Marchand, not really sure what Silas has as op.

"You're not sending us in with an un-shuffled deck are you, Hobbson?"

The only gambling Special Agent Vanessa Marchand has done lately is in the office pool about where Hobbson will end up when he retires. She picked Minnesota, because of all the lakes. "Which of us will be in charge of our group in the field, sir?" she asks.

Nik is elated although he doesn’t let it show. This could be a big opportunity to make his name. He forces himself not to daydream about a Washington posting and concentrate on the matter at hand.

He knows Rue and Marchand from the office, although he hasn’t worked with them directly very much. Stanyard is an unknown, having recently arrived.

Mass kidnappings! He tries hard to think of a relevant question that won’t be stupid and portray his total lack of experience with this kind of case. Up until now, he has mostly worked white-collar crimes – fraud and the like.

“Have there been any ransom demands, boss?”

Hobbson shakes his head. "The liaisons will brief you in full. From what I know though the victims were from broad walks of life and ethnic backgrounds. Not the typical serial, if that's what this is.
"We've received no ransom demands, but no bodies have been found either."

He takes another sip of his drink before answering Vanessa's question. "We've decided you'll be in charge, Agent. Due to the sensitive nature of this case, we need someone in charge who can soothe things over before they head south. Looking over your record I believe that's you. Don't disappoint me; I vouched for you on this."

"If there's nothing else, sign a van out from the auto lot and head out."
Nik,Nik detects a certain uneasiness in Hobbson. The SAC is clearly rather nervous about something. He's hiding it well, but the tells are there; licking of the lips, excessive blinking. It's easy for Nik to figure out what it is. The chief is only a few months away from retirement and this politically charged case lands on his lap. If something goes wrong, this will ruin his reputation.

"Thank you, sir," says Vanessa. It's a lot of responsibility, and a lot of pressure. The other agents are older and probably more experienced than her, but she does have good interpersonal skills. If she does well, it could really enhance her reputation in the FBI and advance her career, but if she makes a hash of it, it would be a permanent black mark on her record. She already feels that she has to prove herself more simply because she's a woman, even in this day and age, but at least she has been given the opportunity to lead. That never would have happened in the old days. J. Edgar Hoover must be rolling over in his grave, she thinks. "I'll do my best." She turns to her fellow agents. "I call shotgun," she says before anyone else does. "Who wants to drive? I'm ready when you are, guys."

Nik can see sense that this is indeed a big case, one which they’d better not screw up. The choice of Marchand is a bit surprising as she is the youngest, but she must obviously be capable. He’ll need to get close to her to keep in the loop.

“I’ll drive” he says. “I just need to get my overnight bag. I’ll get some water too. Do you have a four-wheel drive for us sir?”

"Good luck, Agents."

An hour later the team checks out from the auto pool. They have a Chevy truck a year or two out of date. It's functional though, and easily seats all four of them.
The truck comes with a single pump action shotgun, some spare clips for their pistols, portable flashlights, windbreakers jackets that read FBI on them, police radio and an evidence collection kit. In addition the agents have a medkit and all have their work cell phones, though who knows how spotty reception would be out there.
***

San Carlos is a two and a half hour distance from Phoenix, but nice weather and light traffic gets the team there in just over two hours and fifteen minutes. It's early in the afternoon now, just after one when the team pulls up to the San Carlos Tribal Police station. It's a two story building with cracked paint and fading brown color. Like most of the reservation the agents have traveled through, it appears run down. Indeed, the whole place so far had a bit of a desperate air to it. Groups of locals had been loitering around outside of homes, watching the truck warily as it passed.

The door opens with a loud creek, and the agents enter the station. Inside is a cramped waiting room. A few wooden chairs wait in the corner, looking uncomfortable even from the entrance. A bored looking young deputy looks up at the visitors. For just a moment, his eyes narrow.

"You the feds? This way."

Without waiting for an answer he leads the group down a hallway further back into the station. He walks past a few doors before stopping at one on his right and opening it. Inside is a meeting room of some sort. A big conference table is set up in the middle, chairs surrounding it. At the front of the room are some maps of Arizona and San Carlos, a projector, and two men.

The first man is dressed in a state patrolman's uniform. He's a heavy set man who looks to be in his mid forties, and is presently wearing a cowboy hat and sheriff's badge. He looks like he just came out of the wild west. the secondis dressed in a vest and jeans. He's Native, probably Apache, and looks to be in his thirties. Unlike his companion his build testifies to a lot of time being physically active. He glances up at the new arrivals.

"Feds are here, Sheriff."

"Thank you, Paul." the man says, and the deputy exits the room. The Sheriff appears ready to speak; but before he can his partner steps forward, a wide grin on his face.

"Well, you the help Washington decided to go 'head and send us? I'm Major Frank Garrett. Good to meet y'all. The Chief here is Mangos."

"Sheriff Mangos Colorados," the man replies, emphasis on his title. "I'd say it is good to meet you, but I think we all know this is not an ideal situation for any of us."

Taking the back seat on this job, literally - Stanyard takes a few moments to think before he enters the conference room. This Trooper Garrett sure plays his part. Sheriff Colorado too it seems. Not a good thing to walk into a power struggle like this. Everyone will be having their guard up. Out loud, he sniffs and pulls his nose, remaining silent. They all are guests here at the tribal police office and Chad is unsure on Apache procedure.

Stanyard nods and gestures at the hallway and disappears back through the corridor, on the look for a water-dispenser and a mug to clear his throat from the trip.
Spoiler:
Deputy Paul sure had seemed eager to get the visitors away from the front desk. While looking for his water, Stanyard will listen for conversations and phonecalls in the wake of their appearance at the station. If questioned, Chad will be frank and ask Paul about his judgement when he saw Stanyard and the other feds.

Vanessa shakes hands with both of the men in turn, with the Major first only because he stepped forward and is closer to her. "I hope we can be of help in this case, gentlemen," she says. "We should start by looking at all of the information on it you have, particularly when and where each of the victims vanished, their names, addresses, next of kin and other contacts, that sort of thing, and any files and reports you've made so far."

Major Garrett shoots Vanessa a sly grin and shakes her hand a second more than is perhaps appropriate. "So they're letting you wear the big girl pants, sugar? Times are a changin, I tell you what. Back in my day you'd have been fetching coffee for us big boys."

Neither man seems to notice Stanyard's exit from the room.

"Forgive me for cutting the small talk short, but let us get down to business." Colorados loads the projector, and once the remaining agents have taken their seats he begins.
"Here's what we have..."

Spoiler:

Retired Vice-President for Petroleum Exploration, Royal Dutch Shell Corporation, spending his retirement seeing the world. His wife, Vera, 60 YOA, was a homemaker. They had been touring the United States by car for the past three months. They have no connections or
contacts with anyone in the Southwest, but they did have reservations to stay near the Grand Canyon four days before
their car was found.

The Begay Family: Victorio Begay, Apache Indian, 42 YOA, his wife, Louisa, 38 YOA, and their sons, Luca, 13 YOA, and
Paco, 15. Victorio Begay was a well-respected member of the Apache community. By local standards he was quite prosperous, owning two hundred sheep, several dozen acres of property, two pickup trucks, and a home big enough to give his children their own rooms. He had no enemies to speak of, either personal or business. His wife, Louisa, and both his
sons worked their ranch full-time. Their relations in the community were good. Neither son had any criminal record.

After going over the facts, Colorados opens the floor to questions or comments.
Stanyard,Chad finds a water cooler halfway down the hall, and is able to help himself to a drink unmolested. As luck would have it, he does overhead the phone ring. Paul quickly picks it up, already seeming to know who it is. "San Carlos Tribal... We have no further comments at this time." He hangs up. The whole exchange takes less than 10 seconds. He seems to sense Chad watching him, and turns to confront him. "Media. They've been nonstop ever since the tabloids and that dumb paranormal show picked it up. They're relentless." When questioned further, the young deputy sighs. "Look, it's nothing personal. But our peoples don't always have the rosiest relationship. Add to the fact that you're outside law enforcement and there's a lot of elevated tempers at the moment. Just know your place. You've been called in to help, not steal all the glory." The phone rings again, and Paul moves to answer it. "I need to get that. Don't you have a briefing to attend?" his tone is not unkind, more tired than anything. [ooc]Stanyard can get back in the brieifng room anytime during the above information being presented[/ooc]

Picking up his notebook, Stanyard scribbles a few bullets and passes to Marchand.

* December being the month of disappearances. Is there a mythological/tribal/religious sacrificial tradition during this month?

* There has been no disappearances in January? Doublecheck!

* November -Early December releases from Tribal penitentiary and federal prisons?

* What were the weather reports from the dates of disappearances? Do they stand out from other dates?

* NB Eyes Only: There seems to be a Paranormal TV/radio show calling about the disappearances. Might we worth looking into after the meeting. They do have seismology gear and such...

Nik looks around at the others. "I think that we can probably conclude that there's no personal connections between the victims then. It's just too random".

He turns to Colorados. "Sheriff, do you have a map of the locations of the kidnappings? Perhaps the connection is in the geography, we might see a pattern."

Looking at the bare facts laid out in his notebook, Edmund looks hard for any possible connection but comes up blank.

Four tourists, a family at home, someone at work, two men fishing and a couple on their way to their son's house.

"Did the German and Dutch tourists hire their car from the same place maybe, or maybe even arrived at the same air or seaport? Other than that I cannot see any obvious links."

Vanessa nods as she reviews the notepad. "Yes, other than that," she says, "the only common elements seem to be the locations and the timing. We'll want to check out the scenes, of course, starting with the most recent ones and working backwards, as they'll be the freshest. There have been no known disappearances since December, I take it? Is there any significance to the month of December? Anything relating to local tribal customs or religion? Have any dangerous prisoners been released shortly before the disappearances started? Was there any unusual weather on the dates when people went missing?"

The pair answer the agent's questions.

"We can get you access to the crime scenes, though I doubt you'll find anything," says Colorados. "The victims cars are at a local impound yard, and the fisherman's belongings and anything found on reach of the crime scenes are stored in the evidence locker's here. Mostly trinkets.

"No known disappearances, no, but that does not tell us much. It took well over a week for the tourists to be reporting as missing for us. This time of year what with the busy travel season, folks could have gone missing days ago and we've still not heard," Garrett adds.

"Nothing really significant about the month to my people. Nor have there been any recent releases from the jails that I believe capable of pulling off a scheme this complex. I will of course get you a list however. So long as you promise you are looking for a criminal, not just a scapegoat.

"The weather was fine as well. Hot every day, but normal for those of us use to the local temperatures. Even in the winter we don't get much relief
.

"We thought at first it was AIM related, but the Begay's made that seem unlikely. Chief here says they were a pillar of the community, respected by all."

"Indeed. It also looks as though this was not personal. Some of these could have been targets of opportunity. The tourists for example were unlikely to immediately be missed. And the Curtley's the uh, first victims, car was found with a flat tire out in the middle of State Road 70. We think maybe the perpetrator or perpetrators happened upon them as they were attempting to fix it."

"The disappearances all took place near the southern end of the reservation, on or nearby State Road 70. None of the incidents occurred more than a half mile or so from the road. Perhaps someone is trolling it looking for victims."

Garrett consults his notes. "Let's see... Nope, says here our foreign friends used different rental agencies. Arrived by different airports too."

"You see what we've had to deal with. The victims are all from different walks of life. It's been difficult to pin down anything connecting any of them, aside from where the disappearances took place.
However, the last disappearance that we know of currently, the Begay family, there was a witness... of sorts. One of their neighbors had a conversation with Victorio the night before he went missing. It's our best lead at the moment. Frankly it's our only one. I'm willing to take anyone who wants to come out to meet with him and see if you can all get anything else from him
.

"And my boys and I are gonna take one of the choppers up to survey the road from the sky. It's all desert out there, so anything suspicious should be easy to spot. Y'all welcome to come see how real law enforcement is conducted." The Major puffs his chest out, clearly having great confidence in his abilities.

Stanyard looks at the locals, "Since you mention the AIM, there was a debacle some years ago, I believe. What was that about? And could this be some kind of payback at the area? Not the specific individuals - but at the area's reputation. And, Major Garrett, how does the remaining log of -99 and Arizona look regarding missing people and disappearances, not solely State Road 70? Even the entire stretch of the 70? It does cover a substantial ground. The two major intersections at Globe and Safford should have the highest population where we could find some traces of the tourists. As you said, they've not been found. If these people chose to vanish, they's most likely be in those towns. No way they'd be roughing it in the plains." He pushes a new note to Marchand.
Spoiler:
We need to trace the calls to this station. Two calls came in when we arrived. One allegedly from a newspaper or a Mystery Show from TV. Or it could be the police here is covering something and don't really want our help. If those callers have called at earlier intervals in December we could have a trail. Also, I would like to interview the producers of the show. Could it all be a publicity stunt?
Stanyard lifts an eyebrow at Vanessa when he pushes the note.

"Sheriff Colorados, incidentally, what's with the tabloids writing about the cases? Have you checked their sources? "

Nik casts a sidelong glance at Stanyard. "Where's this guy coming from?" he thinks. He doesn't want to cause a problem with a senior agent, but he surmises that what is happening is probably the work of a local serial killer.

He clears his throat. "Perhaps, as our local colleagues seem to be thinking, the victims probably didn't choose to go missing. Why would these tourists, including a wealthy retired couple, choose to disappear in the middle of the Arizona desert?".

He looks at Marchand. "If it's okay with you, I'd like to talk to Sheriff Colorados' witness."

"AIM's always been a bunch of rabble rousers. They murdered those two FBI Agents back in... what was it? '75?"

"Allegedly."

"Well all I'm sayin' is, they've got a history of violent protest. Maybe they kidnapped all these folks to make some kind of point. In their minds the folks were trespassing on sacred land or some such nonsense. Maybe the Begays found out and had to be removed."

Colorados looks skeptical. "This would be a huge step up from anything else AIM has ever done. And I thought you were willing to discount them?"

"A good lawman don't discount anything, Chief. In many of these cases more than one person went missing. in the Begays four were taken, right from their own home. I don't think we're dealing with just one perp here."

Coloraods shakes his head. "We've examined the local towns, no one has seen a trace of any of the victims since their disappearances. The last correspondence the tourists made were at their hotels, both of which were outside San Carlos."

At the question about tabloids, the sheriff rolls his eyes and Garrett chuckles.

"Yes, the loons have come out of the woodwork. Ever since this story hit national, we've been besieged by 'reporters' convinced that their fringe theories are what is at play here. The worst by far is Phenomen-X." All of the agents had at least heard of it. A paranormal "news" show, It aired at 2 am on one of the basic networks, tucked neatly in between ads for psychics and exercise machines. "They're convinced aliens are the culprits, pointing to some strange lights that have been seen in the sky by a few people. Of course, last year they were around these parts hunting for Bigfoot, so I don't give their words much credence."

"Oh plenty," Colorados says in response to Vanassa's question. "Problem is, they're all garbage. Cranks, nuts, jokers... the typical type you get on an investigation of this size, or so I'm led to believe. Still, I'll be happy to share them with you if you think it will help. For now though, I want to go see our witness. While there, you can inspect the Begay ranch. As the most recent crime scene and the only one where the victims had been home, it might prove useful."

***
Nik and Vanessa,Colorados drives the pair out to the Begay Ranch. It's located only a few miles from the State Road and has a road leading right up to it. It's a large property, probably the largest one the agents had seen around here. A large residence and barn could be seen, and several flocks of cattle wandered about outside in fenced in enclaves. "I took the liberty of asking John Rope to meet us here," says Colorados. "He's our witness. He's also been nice enough to come over and tend to the animals while the Begays are...away." The group approach the home, the animals cries the only sound besides their footsteps. Sitting out front of the home is an old man. Grizzled and with sun tanned skin, he looks to be at least 80. Still he's able to rise up on his own, and moves to shake the sheriff's hand. He does not offer it to the agents. Sheriff Colorados says a few things to the man in another language. Rope nods, causing Colorados to switch back to English and address the feds. "John Rope says that the last time he saw Victorio Begay was the day after Christmas. They are old friends, and one of the man's frequent complaints was that someone was stealing his sheep. John Rope says this had been going on for about two months. The sheep were Victorio's lifeblood, and he was fed up. He told John that he was going to sit out all night with his rifle and wait for the thief to stop by. John Rope says he tried to talk Victorio out of it, but that he was adamant that he wanted to catch the thief red handed. He went to visit Victorio on the 27th, but found no sign of any of the family. There were no signs of a struggle or forced abduction. The only thing out of place was that Victorio's rifle was found not too far from where John was just sitting. It had been unfired. "John Rope knew that the Begays would not leave their herd, so he called us down at the station. We did a thorough search of the property and found no signs of anything amiss. Whoever made the Begays vanished did so without leaving a trace behind."
Stanyard and Edmund,The small state copter is not far from the tribal police station. Garrett had apparently already called it in. Inside the cramped helicopter is the Major and four state patrolman, along with a pilot. The reactions of the men seem to be one of wariness, aside from Garrett, who's all smiles. "Much obliged you fellas wanted to join us. Let's just get one thing straight though; this is my baby. Y'all can throw off whatever fancy suggestions y'all have, but just keep in mind we're runnin the show here. So long as you know that we'll get along just fine." The helicopter itself seemed to be touring the length of the State Road where most of the disappearances had happened. Looking out, the agents quickly discover the area surrounding the road is largely barren. Caves and ridges can be seen further from the road, suggesting there were some places a person could go to lay low around here. "So, you folks got any ideas 'bout what we're dealing with here? In my mind it can only be an organized conspiracy. This is too big for one person. Especially the Begays. An adult man and two teenagers just going missing, all without a fight? That's more than the work of one man. The lack of trouble suggests it was someone they knew too. Maybe they were lured out and abused a safe distance away from their home. Not a pretty picture, it ain't. But it sure will be good to bust up a whole cache of troublemakers." The major chuckles. "Be downright prestigious for our little department." [ooc]You both can make Search rolls as you're examining the Road and its surroundings via air[/ooc].

The house depresses Nik. A whole family disappearing to nowhere. “This is a bad case” he mutters to himself. “It’s going to end badly”.

Acknowledging the old Apache Mr. Rope with a nod of his head, he asks Colorados: “Did any other homesteads in the area report any missing animals? Anything at all? Cats, dogs, chickens?” He’s heard that sometimes killers will remove animals which might give the alarm away.

Vanessa greets John Rope with a friendly wave. "Yes, and were any additional sheep missing from here since the last time he had seen Mr. Begay?" she says. "Perhaps the sheep thieves were responsible for the disappearances, and they could have taken more sheep at the same time. Does he know if the Begays kept a count of their sheep anywhere?"

"Err I don't mean to intrude here, but I take it that the caves, or at least the approach to the caves have been searched by now. It seems to me that you could hide an army up there between the ridges and the caves if you knew the area. Now I know that tracks can be covered easily enough, but I reckon that people who know what to look for could tell the signs."

Edmund and Stanyard,"Sure. We're about fifteen miles away from the Begays now. I'll have us fly over it." "We've searched most of the caves in the surrounding few miles or so, with no particular success. A few of the places are off limits, Tribal importance or some such. Takes awhile to negotiate the right to look through those places. But you're right, anyone could keep a few people pretty well hidden in these parts. Makes our work frustrating." Vanessa and Nik,Rope greets the agents with a stiff nod. "None that we know of. The Begays have some of the largest herds around here. Most of the other ranchers have maybe fifteen or twenty sheep at most, where Victorio had over 200. Perhaps the perpetrators expected it would be less noticeable. John Rope answers Vanassa's questions before Colorados can translate. He speaks to Colorados, who refers his answers to the investigators. "John Rope says there were no new missing sheep since the last time he had seen the Begays, the day before their disappearance. And none have gone missing since. It could be our thief became spooked upon being discovered. "Yes, they have a ledger. It was always one sheep going missing, usually every three or four days. Once tow were taken, but never more than that. This happened roughly twice a week for two months." Edmund and Stanyard,"Take us down!" Garrett tells the pilot, who complies. Helooks smugly at the pair of agents as they make their way down. "Really glad we got your help boys. You've been a big one so far." A few minutes later the copter has (bumpily) landed, and the team gets out to inspect the scene. Patches of dirt have been dug up from the ground revealing a white car roof. It's clear some animal went to great lengths to dig up the car's roof, but strangely they left the rest of the car alone. Garrett lets out a sharp whistle. "Well, well, ain't this promising. I think we just found our next victim boys. None of the previous ones cars went missing along with them, so this seems to be a new case." "I'm gonna call in some backup to help us dig it up. Vanessa and Nik,"Good thinking," Colorados says. "It's in lockup with the rest of the evidence in this case. When we get back to the station I'll have someone fetch it for you." Going through the house Vanessa finds it to be a lovely home, neat and comforting. Dishes are put away and clothes are hung neatly in closets. Various tribal statues can be found throughout the house, each one carved by an obviously skilled hand. The first thing she examines are the bedrooms. The only thing that stands out to her are that each of the beds are unmade. Given the neatness of the rest of the home, that seems a bit unusual. Still, there are no signs of struggle in any of the rooms. Nik is directed to a place just a few feet from where John Rope had been sitting. He examines the spot and finds it gives him a good view of the entrance to the ranch and barn where the animals were kept. With the lack of cover, Anyone coming in from the road would be spotted easily. The only other direction someone could come from was the back of the house, but they'd have to go through others property to make that route, and it was a long trek. Perhaps too long to justify stealing a single sheep. He looks around for a minute over the vast property when something catches his eye. Out to the west a flock of vultures were circling in the sky. Most unusually they were circling over a single spot of land. Nik knew that the birds were attracted to carcasses, meaning there was a good chance something was buried there. If Nik gets closer to the area, he sees that someone or something had already begun to dig it up, and the ground seems disturbed. It shouldn't require much more work to find out what was buried here, if he was curious. [ooc]Nik and Vanessa assuming she follows, can give me search rolls. Stanyard and Edmund,Stanyard's best guess is that the car was driven off the nearby road and buried here. There are not many tracks left though, suggesting it was buried at least a few weeks ago. Edmund sharp eyes notice animal tracks around the sight, suggesting that was at least the culprit that dug part of the buried vehicle up. But what animal could have done this? He thinks for a moment and it clicks. A coyote, the tracks match. Edmund follows the tracks and finds they lead a short distance away and then just.... stop. They go from being fully formed prints to vanishing in the middle of the desert. They seem fresh too, so it's not a case of nature obscuring them over the weeks the car had been buried. Reinforcements arrive within the half hour, and excavation begins on the car. It's tough work digging the thing out, and the agents are free to lend a hand if they like. Either way, it takes more than an hour for the front door of the car to be free of the ground and accessed. Garrett steps forward, volunteering for the duty. He opens the door and immediately gasps. Inside the car are the badly decomposed remains of a man. Topless, there's a large hole in his belly and his intestines have spilled out onto his lap. Judging by the look of them, something had taken a few bites out of them as well. The smell is obviously awful. Garrett gamely manages to keep his lunch, but three of the deputies are not so lucky, and soon the stench of their vomit fills the air as well. Stanyard feels the bile in his throat, but manages to keep it down. [ooc]Both of you can make a san check- our first of the game! This one is violence oriented. 0/1d2. If you take any san loss, I'll ask if you want to project it onto your bonds and preserve your own scores. Edmund can make a con*5 roll to see if he's as lucky. Vanessa and Nik,Neither of the agents can discern anything from the surroundings of the dirt. "I have a shovel in my car," says Colorados. He heads off to get it. John Rope meanwhile is silent, and leans down to inspect the earth. "Look here," he says, speaking English for the first time. He points out several tracks in the ground, all around the hole. "Coyote. It must have dug this up." The sheriff returns and quickly digs further down. Inside is a small grave and a sheep carcass. Someone went to great lengths to bury it. "Right on the property, under the Begays noses." Colorados says, then frowns. "Strange though. If a coyote made these tracks, it should have eaten the carcass. It's nearly unheard of for one to go through the trouble of digging up the carcass and leaving it in one piece. John Rope says something then, back in his own tongue. Colorados looks introspective but doesn't translate. It is then that Nik notices other areas of the ground that have been similarly disturbed. There seem to be about ten of them. Further investigation reveals a sheep carcass in each grave. And then Nik spots a bigger grave on the edge of the property. It's significantly larger than the others. [ooc]Pausing here if either of you want to examine the sheep, question Colorados and/or Rope, or whatever. Next post will probably be unearthing the big grave.[/ooc]

Vanassa and Nik,"The herd seemed perfectly healthy," Colorados says after Rope responds. Vanessa carefully examines the carcass of the first sheep, looking for any obvious tells that could help indicate the manner in which it had expired. After a few minutes she finds something. There are multiple needle like incisions in the corpse. They look to have been directed towards the lungs and heart of the animal. Examinations of some of the other sheep find the same incisions directed towards the same areas. As far as Vanessa can tell, these types of wounds don't seem to have been caused by any of the animals that would be found out here, and the precise targeting hinted at intelligence. The animals themselves have all been eaten, all of their edible bits removed. Vanessa thinks for another moment and reasons that the wounds match the sheep having been possibly injected with something. If she could convince the sheriff to let her send this back to Phoenix for testing, she might be able to get a better understanding of what this is and what effects it may have had.
Stanyard and Edmund,[ooc]Going to move us on. Cearlan, feel free to make your san and con rolls when you return. :)[/ooc] Stanyard examines the crime scene. He quickly notices that there's a surprising lack of blood within the car for such a grisly murder. Even the corpse has only a few drops on it. He manages to find a driver's license for someone named Kenneth Braverman. It's rather hard to tell, given the state of the body, but he thinks the victim is Mr. Braverman. Apparently he's visiting from Houston. Might be worth checking with the police there to see if he's been reported as missing. The trunk holds a spare tire and nothing else. "Still yet to run up. I'll get right on that," says Garrett. The shock of the whole expierence has evidently made him more amicable to cooperation.

"Look, see these injection marks on the sheep?" Vanessa asks. "At least that's my best guess as to what these are. Directly into the lungs and heart. Some ranchers will inject their animals with antibiotics, but that's not what this is. No animal did this, though they were eaten and picked clean of everything edible. That explains why the coyotes didn't eat it. There was nothing left. We need to get one of these sheep sent back to Phoenix for testing in a lab. They can better determine the cause of death and find out what was injected by performing a necropsy and toxicology screening."

The mass grace takes a little more time to dig up. Inside the ground is everyone's worse fear; the partially decomposed bodies of the Begay Family. John Rope gives a deep wail of sorrow, and even Colorados looks close to tears. And it's not hard to see why. All four of the bodies look to have been partially consumed. On the phone to Vanessa-
"Damn, was it close to thee ranch? Our vic seem to be drained of blood with no spillage. There are tracks from some animal, but the site is too clean to be a work from just an animal. Someone else was here and tidied up. He was a Kenneth Braverman, a police officer from Houston. I'll call his superior to report his death and whereabouts. Then we'll might be wiser as to what he was doing out here. Over!"

On the crime scene-
He waits for a sign off and acquires the number to Braverman's station in Texas. "Hello Sir, this is Special agent Stanyard of FBI, Phoenix field office. We have found the remains of one of your officers, Kenneth Barverman. He has been a victim of a car crash and we're conducting an investigation about what caused it. We're sorry for your loss, SIr. We do, however, need to know if he was on a case up here. We think he might be involved in a case we're working on along State Route 70."

Stanyard takes notes from the replies he gets and confers wi th Garrett. "Braverman most likely traveled on the 70 getting here and surely is a fourteenth victim but earlier than the Begay's... If this pattern of people being hidden away close to the site of assault we should check the other sites more closely after graves or covered areas."

To Edmiund he says coming over to him by the car, "How are you doing Rue? Seems this case is growing as we look closer. Good thing we got a lead anyway. Any clue to what killed him?" Stanyard takes a quick look at the wounds again.

Also pick one bond and reduce it by the same amount, as your Agent reacts in some way that distances themselves from one of them. Personally I don't recommend you do it for one point of SAN loss, but the choice is yours. Also, make a check that Vanessa has made one violence check without going temporarily insane or hitting a breaking point. If she's able to do two more, she becomes adapted to Violence.[/ooc] Colorados nods and does so, barking into his radio for backup. John Rope shakes his head at Nik's question, but speaks in English once again. "I do not. I cannot imagine a man doing such depravity to the Begays. They were loved by all." Nik detects some avoidance in his reply though. He's telling the truth, in so far that he does not seem to have any idea who could have done this. But he also seems to be holding something back.
Stanyard and Edmund,Edmund and Stanyard finds it difficult to learn much more about the body, both the sight and smell distracting them. Twice the men have to take a break to avoid further vomiting. The only thing they is able to determine is that Braverman died from massive abdominal trauma, likely the splitting open of his belly by some sort of knife. Stanyard gets the Houston PD and explains the situation. The desk jockey, a gruff older man with a chain smoker's voice, perks up as soon as he hears the name. "Braverman? You got that sick son of a bitch, did you? A lot of us will be sleeping better tonight. "No, no case, but we've been looking for him. He was our chief suspect in a string of prostitute murders here in Houston. The things he did to those girls... "We raided his house but the bastard gave us the slip. Left us a present though. Both his children were dead in their beds. The evil fuck had been eating them, likely for at least a few days. We've got a few officers still in therapy from the experience. His wife Elaine was also gone, we're presuming kidnapped. She's not with him? I wish the man had suffered. He had us all fooled. Seemed like a pleasant guy, but I've taken down hardened criminals whose crimes paled in comparison to this. They were simply evil for the sake of it. ."

On the phone with Houston-

"I hear you, officer. I didn't catch your name, sir. Wait, did you say he was a suspect? I got the idea that he was working for you. Did the victims show punctures in the hearts and lungs as from injections of some sort? We've had a string of murders up here with that MO. If so, I might have to get my superior to send for a courier."

Vanessa and Nik,John Rope looks conflicted, but Nik's words win him over. Softly, he sighs. "Look at the tracks. They all vanish after at most a few hundred feet. And a coyote would not have gone to the effort of digging the corpses up if something were wrong with them. "Our people have a Spirit that has long looked after our Tribe. Coyote. Should any harm the Apache Coyote Spirit will haunt them, disrupting their work at every turn. I believe that it was He that dug up the bodies." He does not seem to expect either of the agents to believe him.
Stanyard and Edmund,"I'm Detective O'Leary. "Yes,our main one in fact, We have him on tape with several of the women, and eye witnesses match he sought several of them out for 'services.' For a cop he was very sloppy, almost like he wanted to be caught. Lucky break for us I suppose, since otherwise more people would have died before suspicion fell on him. "As a matter of fact, most of they did. Some kind of paralyzing agent, though I'm not sure we ever got a full ID on what exactly it was. We suspect Braverman pricked his vics and then fed on many of them while they were still alive and fully conscious but unable to move a muscle. A real sicko. "So Braverman killed more up near Phoenix? Shit. Well at least he's dead now. A lot of us will be glad to hear this nightmare is finally over."

Frustrated, Nik snorts derisively. “Goddamn Apache mumbo-jumbo” he thinks.

He abruptly turns away from Rope and accosts the Sheriff.

“Do you know of anyone on the reservation who could have done this Sheriff?”

"It is strange that the tracks just disappear," muses Vanessa. "Normal coyotes don't do that, nor do they refuse to chew on remains even without flesh on them, yet these are coyote tracks. It sure does seem like the coyotes revealed both the graves and the car at this time, just when we arrived, so that we'd find the bodies. It's hard to imagine that being a coincidence. I can't think of a better explanation."

Stanyard and Edmund,Garrett takes the phone with enthusiasm , offering Stanyard a respectful nod as he does so. He begins to assure O'Leary that they'll both be cooperating to the fullest extent in order to solve the case.
Vanessa and Nik,Rope shakes his head sadly, as Nik conforms his suspicions. "If I had any idea who was responsible for all this, I wouldn't need your help, would I?" snaps Colorados. Then the man sags, and he just looks defeated. "I'm sorry. I knew the Begays. Something like this... it's a real shock." Rope approaches Vanessa. "If you truly believe, I know a Shaman of my people that can aid you in connecting to Coyote Spirit. Palmer Valor has often communed with him. If anyone can aid you, it will be he." "Indeed, he knows much of Apache lore," Colorados admits. "I'm loathe to think this the work of spirit animals, but I know of few other conclusions. Unfortunately, Mr. Valor is currently away on a spiritual retreat. Later that night, the team regroups at their hotel.
Spoiler:
Image
Unlike the rest of the reservation, the Apache Gold is clearly designed as something of a tourist trap, and is kept in far better condition because of it. Though it's not Vegas, it has enough distractions to keep any tourist busy for a few days. Plus it's air conditioned and has a nice sized bar, which the agents may need after their long day.

As Garth Brooks jams on the radio and a pretty young waitress smiles and brings them drinks and refreshments, the team now have a chance to pick each others brains about what they witnessed today. The bodies unearthed at the Begay ranch had been sent to Phoenix for testing, and the team would soon receive the case files on the murders Braverman was said to have committed. Hopefully they could find something useful in all that.
OOC:   Just a quick scene to toss ideas around and for roleplay purposes. Once you're good to move on we'll begin the next day.

Nik

"That sure was a shitty day" grumbles Nik as he sips his vodka. He stares gloomily around at the casino. "I guess we'd better decide what we're gonna do next. Shall I summarise what we have so far?”

“A bunch of dead sheep, stolen from a farm, all with injection marks in the hearts and lungs, partially consumed and buried. Followed by their owners, a family of four, all found in the same condition. The sheep were killed over the space of a couple of months, the family most likely were killed at the same time. I’m guessing that they knew their killer as there is no sign of struggle or violence at the house. However our Apache friends don’t seem to be able to imagine that a local could have done this, and spout off a bunch of mystical coyote crap.”

“We also have a Houston cop, wanted for murder, whose m.o. would fit the details of what happened to the Begay family. However he’s dead too, but his wife is missing. Who’s liking her for the killings? Although she must have an accomplice, perhaps someone who knows the area. Braverman must have upset them somehow, so they offed him. Some kind of goddam serial killing team.”

He pauses and downs the rest of his drink.

"Please fill in any details I missed."

"Braverman sounds like a better fit for our killer than anyone else," says Vanessa, turning to Chad and Edmund. "There's something I've been wondering. How did you two identify the body in the car as Braverman? Can we really be sure that body is him and not one of his victims?"

Stanyard sips on a Lager and replies, "We don't know for sure until the prints come back for comparison. The driver's license and his face did match quite well, but he was in a pretty bad shape. I just assumed that the likeness was good enough. His car, his driver's license. Hmm. Edmiund, did Garrett get prints of Braverman?" "The files of the case he was a suspect in are arriving tomorrow, I think. They might help us out."

Edmund purses his lips and blows through them, softly whistling a single note.

"As the prints and other identifiers such as dental records are either being analysed or beyond our reach at present, no we cannot be 100% certain that it is Braverman, though the facial features body is very similar and match the I.D. found on the vic. We need to see the autopsy and the files from his home station to help us clarify the situation some more I believe. We made a leap of faith that the body and I.D. matched."

January 13th, 1999

OOC:   I'm assuming you have two rooms next to one another for your investigation. I'll let you guys figure out the sleeping arrangements.
Despite the bad dreams of some of them, the team wakes the next morning ready to continue the investigation.

Any of the agents who check in with the home office find that the first analysis of the substance injected within the bodies and the sheep have been performed. Due to the sudden seriousness of the case, it was rushed to completion. Grant, The fed in charge of the analysis speaks to them over the phone.

"Based on what we're seeing here, whatever these bodies were injected with was some sort of tranquilizer or a muscle relaxant. In essence it shut down the bodies almost immediately upon being injected. We're still unsure of the exact means of delivery.

"Here's the odd part. Well, odder. We weren't able to identify the chemical used in the tranquilizer. I reran the tests and found that whatever the tranquilizer is, it's unknown to science. As far as I can determine it exists nowhere in nature. Some of the elements in its makeup appear to be unidentifiable. Frankly, I'm baffled. I've sent it up the ladder. Hopefully someone has seen it before, but I'm not optimistic.

Anyway, try and catch this guy alive. Finding out whatever this was would be a great boon to science. Anyone who did so would achieve great fame
." It's clear what Grant in particular was hoping for. The man already saw a Nobel in front of him.

After the call ends and the agents get ready to leave, they discover something odd. Right outside Vanessa's room is a package. It's a small brown box, devoid of any writing.

Vanessa frowns at the package. "Either someone's trying to help us, or someone's trying to hurt us," she says, "and I'm not sure which. My first instinct is to call the bomb squad, but I'd rather not destroy evidence if that's what this is. It would be great to get a look inside this thing without opening it, with X-rays maybe, but moving it could be dangerous."
OOC,How small is the box? Does it look too small to contain an explosive device?

The box looks to be a shoe box, or at least the size of one. Big enough for a bomb. But there does not seem to be any sound coming from it, and changing a quick shake of the container reveals no clanking of metal coming from inside. The only sound seems to be some sort of paper shuffling about.

Holding her breath, Vanessa opens the package. Inside is a see through folder that contains what looks to be several news clippings. They are dated early July of 1998, and the top one reads as follows:

Morgan County, West Virginia- Folks in Morgan County have an extra reason to celebrate the Forth of July this year. That's because the sky itself will be providing the fireworks.

A spectacular meteor shower is due to light up the sky forth weekend. "It's going to be an incredible sight,' says Professor Harold Fenton of West Virginia University. "For an astronomer like myself, this is really a once in the lifetime opportunity. And what's really great is that it will happen in our own back yard." Professor Fenton went on to say that this shower was only detected just recently. "We had no idea it was coming, but thankfully we detected it in time."

It's sure to be a spectacular sight, and local residents are already making plans to observe the show. Many have gone so far to say they'll collect some of the falling rocks, as a souvenir of the once in a lifetime event. The best place to see the shower will be July 3rd just after midnight, in Morgan and Berkeley Counties. Says Professor Fenton, "We're going to have a lot of astrologers come on down and join the fun. And the University itself will be hosting a little field trip. Regardless, it's sure to be quite the treat."

Aside from articles pertaining to the Meteor Shower, there's no other news to be found in the bag.

"So, who delivered the box? Is there a note? This sounds like something that X-files show would be in to." Stanyard asks. While the others look through the box, he calls up FBI HQ and takes a step away from the browsing. "Stanyard here. Did my request of phone records get bumped?"

There is no identification on the box.

Stanyard calls the FBI in an attempt to trace who had been calling the police station. The news he receives is mixed.

"Unfortunately without a warrant there's not much we can do on that front. However, after doing some digging, It seems like the source covering these stories the most is Phenomen-X, that weird paranormal 'news' show. They've been broadcasting about 'The Devil's Highway' for weeks now, and have interviewed several locals as to their theories on what is happening. We don't suspect the station is leaking anything to the TV show, but they're still a nuisance, and undoubtedly they have a few reporters in the area. Be prepared if you run into them to stonewall."

"I'm not sure what if any relevance the meteor shower would have," says Vanessa. "There's nothing else in here. Someone clearly wanted to pass this information to us anonymously. I can check for prints, but unless we get lucky with a cold hit from someone whose prints are already in the system, we're not going to find out who left it here that way. However, there are probably security cameras around, at least in the casino area. We might want to review the footage to see if anyone came through carrying this box or a container big enough to hold it."

“Okay, I’ll check out the surveillance cameras and see if we can get anything for anyone who might have accessed this area”. Nik is doubtful though – plenty of casino customers must have had bags big enough to hold the box. And it might be an employee anyway.

It only takes a flash of the badge for the hotel staff to become very cooperative with Nik. He is instantly offered access to the security footage.

Unfortunately, it soon becomes apparent that the only area of the hotel that has coverage is the casino floor. One does not need to cross it to get to the elevator leading to the hotel rooms, so its usefulness is limited. Nik and the other agents can examine the footage, but it will take some time, and they soon have a meeting with Colorados and Garrett to go over their leads. And there's no guarantee they'd find anything anyway. Still, if they were truly curious about their delivery it could be worth pursuing.

Nik's search for meteor showers is more straight forward. There have been none in the area this last month, or at least none documented. He's about to give up when something from the clippings hits him. Berkeley County and July 3rd had both been underlined. On a lark he searches for events transpiring in the county on that day. He finds little aside from more articles pertaining to the shower, but events that started taking place a few days later catch his eye.

July 6th: Cattle mutilations stun county...
July 8th: Are aliens behind the recent cattle mutilations?
July 9th: Rancher missing along with herd...
July 15th: Hunter missing...
July 17th: Satanic cult activity behind recent disappearances, preacher declares...
July 18th: Ninth person missing, police believe connected...
July 21st: Shock as cannibalized body found hanging from a tree...
July 22nd: Police close to a break?
July 24th: An attempt to arrest the man behind the string of kidnappings and murders recently ended tragically. Police say Mack Tooley, 34, shot himself...
July 26th: Traces of human blood and tissue were found today in Mack Tooley's digestive track, all but confirming him as the killer. Sources tell this paper that the scene so devastated autopsy performer Dr. Brenton Clark, a twenty year veteran at the county morgue, that he immediately announced his resignation...

At this point it's almost time for their meeting with the authorities. The agents will need to leave now if they don't want to be late.

“Jesus Christ” Nik mutters. He starts to print out the articles. “I need to make a phone call. Colorados and Garrett will have to wait.”

He calls the Phoenix office and speaks to the agent on duty. “This is Siilasvuo. I need to you to find out about some murders in Berkeley County, West Virginia in July this year. The perp was a ‘Mack Tooley’, it seems he cannibalized his victims. I want to know if the victims had been injected with an unknown drug into their hearts and lungs. The Phoenix Field Office assures Nik they'll look into the matter, and should be able to get back to him by that afternoon.

And so,t he team heads back to the Reservation police station.

The first thing that's noticeable is a large crowd is now gathered outside the front of the police station. They seem to be reporters, everything from local to national and all over the respectability spectrum. Evidently the unearthing of the Begays had turned this story redhot.

As soon as the first reporter spies the team heading towards the station, they call out and rush towards them. The rest of the reporters quickly follow, shouting questions over one another(especially if any of the agents are dressed in their FBI blazers.)

"Is the FBI now involved in the case?"

"Is this a serial homicide investigation?"

"Are the other missing people presumed dead as well?"

"Do you have any suspects?"

They continue to shout questions, doing everything they can to get answers from the fresh meat. Do any of the agents wish to provide a statement?

The reporters are disappointed and make their displeasure known. Though they continue to shout questions, a few pointed looks prove they're unwilling to push things much further, and the agents all make it inside the station unmolested.
Stanyard,Stanyard notices a reporter who is wearing Phenomen-X' gear. The "reporter" is a pox marked young man with unkempt brown hair and wild blue eyes. He's nowhere near the front of the crowd, struggling to shout questions from the back.
Inside the station Deputy Paul greets the party.

"You managed to get through that battlefield, huh? It's crazy out there. Sheriff Colorados ain't too happy with all this attention." He leads the party back to the same room as last time. Inside are Garrett and Colorados as well as a third man.

"'Bout time you folks decided to show up," Garrett drawls.

"Let's get down to business." The sheriff nods in greeting to the third man who steps forward. He's a heavyset gentleman who looks to be in his mid to late 30's. Balding, he wears ill fitting spectacles that do him no favors. He shakes hands with each of the agents, asking for names.

"Joseph Gutierrez. I'm the ah, medical examiner for the reservation. I did the autopsy on Mr. Braverman." he pulls up some notes and begins to read. "Mr. Braverman's autopsy was unusual in a variety of ways. To begin with, the cause of death appears to have been disembowelment. Based on the type of cuts, I'm rather certain that they were self inflicted by Mr. Braverman. That is.... most unusual. It would have taken quite a bit of willpower to work through the pain, as they will. Most men would have passed out, but his were perfectly accurate. He must have been in enormous pain as he made the cuts, but he managed to push through.

"The oddest part was that Braverman's lungs were removed after death. This and the lack of blood suggests he had an accomplice. Likely someone with an iron stomach
." He laughs, but no one else does.

"We were able to get prints from the car that might help with that," says Garrett. "Two sets, Braverman and his wife Elaine. Seems like a match made in hell."

"We also recieved reports on the crimes he is alleged to have committed. You're welcome to look them over, but in short, Kenneth Braverman is suspected of murdering seven prostitutes and his own children. All of the victims were filled with the same paralyzing agent of the Begays, and all were at least partially eaten."

The men take a moment to collect themselves, allowing the agents to make any comments they'd like.

Nik

For Nik, this case is just getting stranger and stranger. He really wasn't expecting this.

He doesn't have anything to add, but he makes a mental note to check with Braverman's captain as to his whereabouts last July when the Berkeley County killings took place.

Colorados continues. "We also found two of the other missing pairs, the Fisherman and German tourists. Like the Begays, they were located in partially dug up holes around the reservation. Time of death is yet to be determined, but they've been dead for awhile, and were in the same state as the Begays."

"Braverman himself has been dead for around two weeks. I suppose he's not your killer, at least of the later victims." Gutierrez adjusts his glasses. "His wife is yet to be found. I suppose she's your main suspect at this point."

It is at this point that Nik's phone begins to ring. If he steps outside the room to answer it...
Nik,"Got the information you wanted. This Mack Tooley was a real monster. Some sort of mountain man. He targeted drifters and the like. They don't have an exact count of his victims, since not all of them were found and he's in no position to talk. But suspicion fell on him after the last victim was discovered. Apparently he and Mack were good friends and had been out drinking the night before. And yep, I'm seeing evidence of drugs injected in all of them here. Unknown precisely what type. Police went to talk to him, and he shot himself. The autopsy confirmed his guilt. It's mentioned here that the medical examiner, a Dr. Clark, abruptly resigned after performing the autopsy. The stress was apparently too much for him; he killed himself in Nashville a week later."
Colorados looks conflicted, but continues. "There's something strange about this case, and I think we could benefit from speaking to Shaman Valor."

Garrett snorts. "Oh c'mon Chief. I thought you were a rational fella. You buy into all that mumbo jumbo?"

The sheriff turns on him, his eyes flashing. "Can you explain why all of a sudden our victims graves are being uncovered for us? Or why the tracks of the coyote in each case have disappeared into thin air?"

"No, but I know it's not because of ghost coyotes or whatever you're suggesting."

Colorados ignores him and turns to Vanessa. "I've sent one of his apprentices to Shaman Valor telling him we are coming. He is supposed to return later today from his retreat with the other shamans, but this case has convinced me it cannot wait. Any of you who wish to come with us to consult with him are free to do so, but show him proper respect. I will not have our ways mocked."

"Thank you, Sheriff," replies Vanessa. "I'll be respectful of Shaman Valor. About the method of suicide - it's similar to the Japanese ritual of seppuku. When a samurai is dishonored, he is supposed to disembowel himself with the shorter of his two swords - the wakizashi. It's an extremely slow and painful way to die, and they regarded it as suitable punishment for their disgrace. Not all samurai had the willpower to go through with it, but many did, so it's not unheard of. Dr. Gutierrez, do you have any idea what sort of instrument Mr. Braverman used to kill himself? Was it found at the scene?"

Nik

Nik returns to the meeting, deeply troubled by what he has learned. “I’m sorry to interrupt, but I’ve just learned that a series of murders which mirror our situation was committed in West Virginia in July.”

He proceeds to fill the others in on the details, and then addresses Marchand.

“The person who left the articles knew about the connection, and wanted us to look for it. I think it’s vital that we learn who that person is – they could even be one of the killers. Why don’t I go back to the casino and review the surveillance tapes again? Perhaps one of the deputies could help me identify any locals too?”

Stanyard lifts his hand as if in school and waits on being noticed. "Ehem, I've heard that a show called Penomen-X, something like X-files is doing something on the murders. Have you interviewed them about their sources, Sheriff Garrett? I spotted one of them out here in the media crowd. Could be worth our while to pressure him on what and where he's been getting his intel."

"As a matter of fact, we do have the murder weapon. Or suicide, in this case. It was a long knife. Found underneath Braverman's seat. We tested it, and the only prints onthe blade were his."

All three men listen in concern when Nik returns.

"It does sound eerily similar," says Colorados. "And what's more, the suspected killer killed himself in that case as well."

"So what, are we 'dealin with a cult or something?"

"I am unsure, but am more convinced than ever that Shaman Valor is worth speaking to. Anyone who wants to come with us are welcome.

"Aw, what the hell," Garrett says. "I'm in."

"Still, someone leaked this information, and they're our best lead at the moment. Agent Siilasvuo, I think you should try and track this source down."

Garrett waves off Stanyard. "Those loonies think this was the work of aliens or some such nonsense. If you want to waste your time interviewing them feel free. But I'm confident they ain't got no information on what's really 'goin on."
OOC:   Okay, let me know what each of you guys are doing, and I'll start the next scenes.

Vanessa nods to Nik. "Yes, follow up this lead. I'll meet with Shaman Valor." It's just as well he doesn't go along to meet the Shaman, considering, she thinks. "Stanyard, if you feel the Phenomn-X angle is worth pursuing, you're welcome to do it. Rue, you're welcome to join whichever of us you like."

Nik

Before returning to the casino, Nik gets the number for Braverman's precinct in Houston. Asking to speak to the detective in charge of his case, he tries to ascertain whether Braverman had been away from work at the time the Berkeley County killings took place.

OOC:   Edmiund can feel free to join any of the groups when he returns, and I'll gladly slot him in.
Stanyard,It's not difficult to get the attention of the Phenomen-X reporter. Getting him away from the rest of the press is a good deal harder, but Stanyard eventually manages. The reporter, perhaps thinking he's getting the scoop of the century, comes along quietly to wherever Stanyard takes him. "Alright man, you're giving me an interview, yeah?" Says the young man. His eyes are wild and swing from side to side, and he continuously licks his lips. "Oh man, I can't believe I'm actually getting a Fed to go on the record with me. Wait until the guys here this! Maybe Sonja will actually go out with me finally, now that I've shown I'm a real reporter." "So um, Let's get started. I'm Harold. What do you know about this case? Is it true that aliens are involved? I've heard a lot of reports of that." [ooc]Stanyard can make any rolls he wants here if he wants to try and read the man.[/ooc]
Vanessa,The group make their way out to the Shaman's retreat. Along with Colorados and Garrett comes the young deputy Paul. They all drive out in Sheriff Colorados squad car. As they do so Colorados fills the agents in. "There will be three Shaman out here. They should know we're coming, and will hopefully prove receptive to our presence. Just stand behind me and let me do the talking. It may take a bit of time to get them to open up, but they are all good men. I know they will assist us rather than allow innocents to suffer." It's about a half hour drive before the group has to get out. They've long gone off road, off into the very depths of San Carlos, and now find themselves at a narrow canyon opening. Colorados gets out and points. "It's just through here." "'Bout time," says Garrett, walking ahead of the group. "This is sacred ground, Frank," the sheriff warns, but follows. Past the opening is a narrow path leading up to a cave. The path is narrow, allowing only one person up it at any one spot, and rocks line the walkway and down the other end. A small stream of water flows out of the mouth of the cave, cascading down to a small pool beneath it. It's very quiet, almost serene. "We're comin up, Geronimo! Get the peace pipes ready!" " Frank!" "Hush now, Chief. These folks can take a little good nature teasin. Why, I bet that..." Bang. The loud crack of a rifle shoots through the air. Garrett is struck in the chest. He jerks back and collapses onto the ground, his cowboy hat falling from his head. Vanessa catches a glimpse of a rifle in the cave entrance, but already it is disappearing back inside. [ooc]So, our first combat. First let's take care of turn order: Vanessa: 12 ???: 12 Garrett: 11 Colorados: 10 Paul: 9 As best Vanessa can tell Garrett's still alive, but he is currently sprawled out on the middle of the ground, far from any cover. From the cave he's a sitting duck. Vanessa( and Rue if he's here) have a few different options. 1. There are several rocks around. They can make it to any of them and have very good cover this round. 2. They can try and drag Garrett to safety behind one of the rocks. This will require a full turn and a STR* 5 check. Failure finds them stuck in the middle of their surroundings. 3. It will take three full turns to get to the cave entrance, and characters can act on the 4th. There are three rocks spaced out on the path leading up to it, so characters can rush from one to the next per turn without a roll. Or they can make an athletics check to make double the progress in one turn. Going from either their current location to rock 2 halfway up the path, from rock 1 to rock 3, or from rock 2 to the entrance. Failure means they end the turn without any cover. 4. They can try to shoot the assailant now, but he has good cover. Right now all their shots would be made at -60%. Once you reach rock 1 this drops to -40%, Rock 2 -20% Rock 3-0%. Actually reaching the cave entrance doubles your skill. Hopefully this is enough information to plan out your actions. If you have any questions let me know.[/ooc]
Nik,The answer comes back quickly. Braverman was working at that time. He could not have committed the West Virginia murders. Nik's soon back in the casino, viewing their tapes. It's a long time period though, and they can't really pin down when the package could have been delivered. For all Nik knows it could have been anytime since he went to bed last night to when he emerged from his room this morning. This is going to take some time. [ooc]Let's have Nik make a Search roll. I'm going to say he has a -10% penalty due to the long time frame he's looking at here and lack of any real clues. If you fail it's just time wasted. You can roll as many times as you want, but each failure is another hour of fruitless searching.[/ooc]

OOC:   Search 40% -10 Rolled Search: 1d100 45
Nik spends a couple more hours searching through the surveillance videos but comes up with nothing. Frustrated, he concludes that this angle is a dead end.

“There must be some connection between here and West Virginia” he thinks. “We have exactly the same M.O., even down to mysterious lights in the sky. Perhaps someone is looking out for meteor showers, and then moving to that location and beginning to kill? While they are there, they also recruit an accomplice. Perhaps they have some kind of other weird drug which they can use to control minds?”

As a result, he makes two phone calls. The first is to the National Weather Service office in Houston, to see if there had been any meteor sightings before the time of the Braverman killings. The second is to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Department. He wants to question the officers handling the Tooley murders. He particularly wants to know if they think Tooley might have had any accomplices.

Stanyard starts a small recording device and places it on the robust but plain table in the small room. He takes a seat in front of Harold. "Son, it's the other way around. I need your inside source to how you retrieve your information. Is it from the police department here? Or is it one of the abductors who fill you in on details?" Stanyard unclips a set of hand-cuffs and slaps one part around the wrist of Harold. The other end he cuffs to the table where a metal handle is fitted.

"You see, if you have a plan to see Sonja again for a date, you really need to give us your in."

Nik,After fifteen minutes on hold Nik gets an answer from the National Weather Service. There had been no meteor showers seen at that time in Houston. Disappointed, Nik calls the West Virginia PD. "Oh, that case." says the detective he's transferred to. "Yeah, that's gonna haunt me for a good long time. "We never considered an accomplice. Tooley's prints were the only ones found on all the victims. Frankly, the crime was so out there I doubt anyone else would willingly participate. Yet you say you're investigating similar? "I really wish I could help you, but no, I'd stake my badge on Tooley acting alone. But perhaps your guy is a copycat? It's fairly common for infamous crimes to attract some, and this one certainly was." [ooc]Where to now? Nik can try examining the tapes again, making Search rolls as before. He might have better luck now. Or he can make an Idea roll and see if any other options present themselves.[/ooc]
Stanyard,[ooc]We'll say you're doing this in the Police Station.[/ooc] Harold sits there slack jawed, easily allowing Stanyard to cuff him. The poor guy seems rather shocked. "H...Hey! First Amendment Rights! This is illegal imprisonment. Someone help!" He shouts. "I don't have to answer any of your questions, Mister FBI!" The mention of Sonja sobers him however. "Okay, I'll talk. Just let me go afterwards, alright?" "My source is very reliable. Old Apache by the name of Richard Eskaminzim. He told me about the lights he saw in the sky on the nights of the disappearances. They're a common sight in alien abduction cases. You should ask him." He gives an address. "He's a spiritual teacher here in San Carlos. Now let me go, will ya?"
Vanessa,[ooc]I'll give it until tomorrow for Cearlan to post. If he does not by then, I'll say Rue accompanied you and you can direct him accordingly.[/ooc]

Stanyard gets up. "Harold. I'm going to get a cup of coffee. When I'm away, you may further add to your testimony. That way you can tell your friends you did not tell the FBI anything incriminating. When I arrive back, I'll end the interview." He moves for the door. "Do you take milk?"

Nik isn’t very satisfied by the detective’s explanation. "How the hell could this be a copycat?" He continues his questioning.

“I’m guessing that the substance injected into the victims couldn’t be identified by the M.E.?”
he asks. “Was that your finding? Our M.E. tells us that the substance they detected is like nothing they’ve seen before. That’s like, unknown to science, man. There’s no way some mountain man could have cooked up this shit.”

“I’d like to get the autopsy reports on the victims, I’ll have our office put in a request for them. I understand that your M.E. killed himself over this case. That’s goddam awful and I’m real sorry to hear about it.”
Nik suddenly feels very tired about the whole thing. “I hope we can get this guy soon.”

Stanyard,"Go fuck yourself, you fascist goon! And yes. With two sugars." When Stanyard returns, Harold takes the drink wordlessly. Then he sips it immediately, letting out a pained shriek. An annoyed look is given before he sighs. "Look, I don't know anything else. Eskaminzim was my main source. Go talk to him. Oh man, he's not going to give me anything after this... keep my name out of it, alright? "Now let me go, alright? I helped you out, didn't I?" [ooc]If you want to make a HUMINT roll feel free, but Stanyard's basic impression is that Harold seems sincere.[/ooc]
Nik,"Indeed. It baffled our experts. We actually sent samples up the line to the FBI. We were never told the results, so I'm not sure if they found anything. "Although...' his voice goes quieter, and Nik has to strain to listen to him. "About two days later some folks from the CDC showed up. They confiscated the remaining bodies, said they needed them for further research into the drug. Not heard anything from them since either. Our M.E. questioned them a few times but was stonewalled. My guess is that either they don't know anything or they don't want us to learn anything." "Dr. Clark. A damn fine man. Worked for this department twenty years. Yet as soon as he did Tooley's autopsy, he did a total 180. Walked right into the chief's office and announced his resignation. His personality changed as well. I remember running into him in the hall afterwards and wishing him well, but he just... looked at me with distaste before giving a curt nod and walking away. Doc was always a friendly guy. I think whatever he saw in there spooked the hell out of him. Enough so that he tried to escape it by moving halfway across the country to Nashville. I followed up on his death, consulted with the police down there, but they're convinced it was definitely suicide. He disemboweled himself with a knife. What a way to go. "I hope you get him to. If you want my advice, don't try to dig too deep into all this. Something feels very wrong about the whole thing.

All the while Stanyard is quizzing the young reporter, Edmund just stands in the corner staring at him - trying to unsettle him further. Sauntering over to the table where Stanyard and Harold are as he switches the recorder off before he leans on the surface with his fists and says in a low voice;-

"Oh we'll be sure to mention your name to this Eskaminzim - and to anyone else who is willing to listen if anything you have told us you don't pan out. Y'see, we can play these games as well - you want us to be fascist goons? Just be careful what you wish for is all I'm saying."

Stanyard conjures his contact card and places it on the table and pushes stop on the recorder. He pockets it and opens the cuffs.

"Be on your way."

When Harold has left, Stanyard waits with Edmund in the room.

"It sure seems he had regular chats with this Richard Eskaminzim. Do you want to call Vanessa or give Garrett the update? I'll handle the task you rather not do."

Nik

“Far too late for that Detective”. Nik thanks the man and hangs up, his mind spinning. Every new piece of information seems to make things more confusing, not clearer.

He decides to make more phone calls. Firstly, he calls the field office and asks the duty agent to make a VICAP search. He outlines the details of the killings, the use of the unknown drug and how it is applied, and also about the method of suicide employed by the M.E. and Braverman. He wants to know if any other killings or suicides are recorded to have occurred.

Next he calls the Nashville PD HQ and contacts their Investigative Services department. He asks about any murders matching the description of the reservation killings.

OOC:   Sorry I missed the posts where you called me Rue - I had been looking for Edmund .

OOC:   Everyone: due to different scenes moving at different paces, I'm going to rule that Nik is ahead of the other agents. It does not matter much now, but keep it in mind if you try to contact one another that he won't be able to respond until we all catch up.
Vanessa,Vanessa rushes towards the fallen state trooper, intent on saving him. Another shot goes off. Vanessa braces to be hit, but it is not her who is fired at. Instead deputy Paul is struck in the side. It looks like a grievous wound, but the man manages to barely remain standing. He begins to limp his way over to cover. Colorados rushes to assist Vanessa with Garrett, and the pair begin to make progress. He's a heavy man over 200 pounds, but the pair just manage to get him to cover. It is then that Garrett's radio begins to squawk, another loud sound breaking the silence. Edmund voice can be heard from the other end. [ooc]Paul is behind all of you, slowly making his way to the rocks and bleeding all the way.[/ooc]
Edmund and Stanyard,Harold averts his gaze from Edmund, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. "Of course I tried to get information from the police," he tells Stanyard. "But they never gave me anything. Most of the time they hung up on me when I began questioning them about alien involvement. "I'm not scared of your threats. There's a reason you two detained me. You don't want the American people to find out the truth! I'm going to find out exactly what it is you're hiding."He sounds confident, but any aggressive movement or even glare causes the young reporter to flinch. As soon as he can, he rushes out of the room. Edmund can't get a connection on Vanessa's cell, so he calls in to Garrett's radio. He waits for an answer.
Nik,[ooc]I'm going to make a Bureaucracy roll here. Failure just means it will take longer. I'll give you a +20 bonus on it since this is an important case. Rolled and you got a 33, just above 30. Argh, sorry. Still, your other idea will get you plenty of info.[/ooc] "Can do,' the FBI Agent answers. "Might take a bit of time, but I'll get you any similar cases as soon as I can." Nik's call to the P.D. quickly gets him into contact with a senior Detective. After listening briefly he confirms Nik's worse fears. "Four months ago. Homeless people started to vanish throughout the city. It got up to twenty one or so before we took notice and realized this was something more than migration. A bit of digging and we found a few of the missing; partially eaten and with needle like injections throughout. "Turns out all the vanished had stayed at a homeless shelter run by a priest. Father Willard Franklin. We questioned him and found him suspicious. But by the time we got a warrant he had killed himself by disembowelment. We found traces of human meat inside of him, so considered the case closed. "Although... about a month and a half ago we got a call from the New Orleans police. Turns out they had a murder spree of their own. Several people went missing in the French Quarter. It threw the whole city into a panic, but thankfully the killer was shot dead during a home invasion. The guy's name was Elijah Jackson. His last known place of residence was the same shelter Father Franklin ran." He offers Nik the phone number for the New Orleans PD if he wants to follow up on it.

Nik rubs his eyes and goes to fetch coffee. A theory is starting to take shape in his mind, he just needs a few more facts to confirm his suspicions.

He calls the NOPD on the number given. “Can I get the name of the individual whose home was invaded by Elijah Jackson? And do you happen to know his or her whereabouts now?”

Vanessa,Nodding, Colarados prepares to help Paul get to cover. But the shooter is faster. A third shot rings out, this one hitting the deputy in the side. With a final twitch, he falls down, unmoving. "Shit!" The sheriff says. He cancels his run and hugs the rock both he and Vanessa are using as cover. Vanessa meanwhile forces herself to concentrate. Garrett's bleeding bad, and they don't have much in the way of equipment out here for him. But ripping off parts of his pants, she manages to use the fabric as a tourniquet and stop the bleeding. Garrett gives a weak cough and looks up at her. "Guess... I underestimated you, girlie." She feels confident that he'll live, provided they can get him to a hospital within the next few hours. "So what's the plan?" Colorados asks. "We wait here for backup, or you want to rush the guy? If so, I'll cover you." As Vanessa considers her answer, her eyes are drawn to the deputy's body. She was powerless to do anything to save him, and it drags at her. [ooc]San roll time once again. Vanessa makes a roll at 0/1d3. This is a helplessness san roll, as she really could do nothing but watch the poor man die.[/ooc]
Nik,The coffee is lukewarm. Nik calls the NOPD, and some bureaucratic wrangling endures. But he's able to eventually get the name; A David Charles. He became something of a minor celebrity, and was interviewed by local press. But once it was determined that Elijah Jackson had been the man behind the recent serial killings, Charles left town. He was found a week later in a hotel room in Houston. Disemboweled. Nik recalls that Houston was where Braverman was from. The latest serial, he had made his way to San Carlos.
Edmund and Stanyard,[ooc]I assume Edmund is going to follow his partner, but if he has any other intentions, let me know.[/ooc] Also, Vanessa is at the cave where the shaman are having their spiritual retreat, but I assume that's where Stanyard at least wants to head? The deputy jumps into attention. "Right! And should be, I'll ask the state troopers." It takes almost half an hour, but the group is in the air. Along with Stanyard and Edmund(if he comes) are four state troopers and two reservation police. An ambulance is also on the way to the scene, with whatever other support can be scrounged up. Everyone of the officers looks grim and like they're expecting trouble. All are wearing vests, and two carry rifles. [ooc]Timeline being finicky, You probably won't arrive until the action resolves at the cave. I'll post again when you guys arrive.[/ooc]

Nik is unsuprised at this information, it confirms his suspicions. Before he can make his report though there is one more point he needs to clarify.

Turning to the phone again he calls Braverman's captain in Houston.

“Was Braverman working on a case which involved a David Charles of New Orleans”?
OOC:   SP, do you have the dates of the Nashville and New Orleans killings? I need to make a timeline

Vanessa winces when she sees the dead deputy, then forces a smile for Garrett. "I just wish I could have saved both of you," she says. "Hang in there, you're going to be all right." To the Sheriff she adds. "That sniper's just too good a shot, and too quick. Poor Paul didn't even have a chance. We're pinned down pretty good here, but so is the killer, at least. We just have to hold on until backup arrives."

Vanessa,[ooc]Nicely done. Since you suffered some san loss, make a check 1/3 san checks for Helplessness. Get two more without going insane and you can become hardened to it.[/ooc] Colorados looks conflicted, but another shot rings out. This one hits the rock they're cowering behind. "You're right, I don't think we can reach him without being picked off. Our best hope is he wastes his ammo." The next few minutes are punctuated by the loud sound of several shots. Some of them hit the rock; others hit the ground near Paul's body. [ooc]Vanessa can make a HUMINT roll if she likes.[/ooc] After a few more minutes, two things become clear. First, the sound of a helicopter can be heard, and it soon becomes apparent that it's heading straight for them. Second, Vanessa realizes she's not heard any gun shots in a few minutes. Very cautiously, Colorados peaks his head out. Tense, he waits for a shot that never comes. "I think he's withdrawn into the cave." The helicopter lands nearby, and soon a group of reinforcements arrive. Vanessa sees a mixture of state troopers and reservation police, along with Stanyard and Edmund.
Stanyard and Edmund,Chatter is kept low, and within twenty minutes the helicopter touches down in an isolated area of San Carlos. According to the pilot, it's close to the Shaman's cave. Both agents can see Colorados' car nearby, a sure sign that they're on the right track. Together with the rest of the group, they make their way into a canyon opening and come across the cave. Past the opening is a narrow path leading up to the cave. The path is narrow, allowing only one person up it at any one spot, and rocks line the walkway and down the other end. A small stream of water flows out of the mouth of the cave, cascading down to a small pool beneath it. At the start of the path is a dead deputy, shoot dead as if by some high power rifle. Both Edmund and Stanyard recognize him as Paul. For Stanyard, who had spoken to the man at some length just the day earlier, it's a hard sight to see. [ooc]Stanyard needs to make a 0/1d2 roll for violence to see if the sight disturbs him.[/ooc] Crouched behind a rock a bit of a ways further up are Colorados, Agent Vanessa, and an injured Major Garrett. Seeing the group Colorados waves them forward, and a few of the state troopers rush up to assist their leader.
Nik,Looking over his notes, Nik sees that the killings in Nashville started four months ago, back in September of '98. The New Orleans killings occurred a month later in October. These started on the 6th and came to an apparent end with Elijah Jackson's death on the 21st. The Houston murders began October 28th, before Braverman fled the city late in November, on the 24th. The call gets Nik some further information from Houston. "Hmm... as a matter of fact, he was. This Charles guy killed himself. Nothing too spectacular besides the gruesome way he did himself in. Braverman was one of the cops first on scene."

Nik

This confirms what Nik had suspected. He finishes his notes in preparation to brief the others when they return later. It's very important that he convinces them as to the validity of his theory, however outlandish it might seem. Their lives might depend on it.

One thing is still troubling him though - who left the articles for Marchand? It can't be the killer – he or she has obviously been attempting to stay under the radar by moving after each cycle of murders. So who else has a handle on this? He thinks that there is someone else facilitating these killings, but why would they attract attention to themselves? He wishes he could get a profile on this jerk.

He orders a club sandwich from the casino restaurant and prepares to search through the surveillance videos again. He should've had laid off the vodka last night.
OOC:   I'll lay out my ideas when the others get back from their adventures. In the meantime can he search again? Look, I rolled a success! Just. Search 40% Search: 1d100 39

Touching down-
Stanyard recognizes Paul, mostly be the color of his hair. "Damn!", he hisses as he runs huddled over towards the rocks where the others are covering.
"Hold tight, guys. Have a spare gun??"
He offers an empty hand to Colorado.
He seems totally unhindered by the scene, so far.

Nik,Nik goes back to examining the surveillance videos. It's very tedious work, especially because he has only the slimmest idea what he's even looking for. But at around Six he thinks he sees something. There on the casino floor is a black woman. She's dressed in a sharp suit and wearing John Lennon style shades. She moves purposefully through the crowd while holding a briefcase, not stopping at or even appearing to notice any of the slots around her. [ooc]Rolled your HUMINT here. Nik passed.[/ooc] The briefcase looks big enough to hold the files they had received, Nik reasons. But something else also catches his eye; the woman keeps her head down, and uses the crowd as much as she can to obscure the view of the cameras. As a result, it's only a few stills where he's able to get a reasonably clear picture of her. Based on this behavior Nik thinks it's likely she's a professional of some sort. Military? CIA? [ooc]Well done. Nik was pretty clever here and accomplished a lot. I think we're going to pause him here until the others catch up and return from their own adventures, but if you have any final thoughts for Nik feel free to offer them up. :)[/ooc]
Everyone else,[ooc]Given the situation, I don't think it's unreasonable to rule both you guys brought your own sidearms and vests to the scene, anticipating trouble.[/ooc] "No, but feel free to take Garrett's. He's in no position to use it." As one of the state troopers tends to Garrett, the sheriff continues." No positive ID yet. As far as I know this is the only way into the cave. But he's not fired for awhile, so we have to consider that he retreated further into the cave. It goes a ways back. We also have to consider that he might have hostages in the shaman. "I'm going to try and take advantage of the opening and breech." He looked towards his men. "Cover me. First sign of trouble duck behind rocks." Then he turns to the agents. "Any of you three want to come with me?"

Edmund nods grimly - "Yeah I guess I'll be heading out with you. I reckon we should split up, one to the left and one to the right. will make it harder for a solitary gunman to take us both down than if we are together. I;ll take the left unless you have a preference?"

"I'll come too," says Vanessa. "I could help with hostage negotiation. Failing that, I'm a pretty good shot too. We should advance in stages. One of us moves to the next rock while the other covers, then we switch off. At least if there's no other way out of that cave, that means the sniper is cornered and can't escape. Of course, being aware of that would make the killer more dangerous. I have no preference, so I'll take the right."
OOC,I think Vanessa would make a habit of wearing it whenever she's on duty. I'm not sure if it's standard FBI procedure, but it is standard police procedure, and she'd be one to follow it (though not everyone does).

Cave group,The group decides to rush the cave, Colorados volunteering to cover the rear. There are three large rocks leading up the path, which is narrow enough that it only allows one person at any one point of it. Naturally, this complicates things. But the team braves the path and each member of the team is able to make it up the path from one rock to the next. It's nervewracking, but no movement is detected from within the cave, and very soon the group are able to make it to the top of the path. The cave entrance is slightly bigger, allowing more than one person to enter it. But the entrance is pitch black, and provides no clue as to what's lurking inside. The sheriff gestures to the agents, making it clear that his idea is to rush the cave with one of them. With luck, they'd be able to overpower the assailant before he could kill anyone else. Colorados holds up his fingers, counting down for everyone's benefit. Three. Two. One. Then he takes off, along with any of the agents who wish to follow. Guns drawn, they rush the cave. "Put the weapon down!" But there is no response in the blackness within the cave. A few tense moments reveals there to be no movement within either. "Stay on guard," warns the sheriff. With a shaky hand he puts his gun away and pulls out a flashlight. Taking the opportunity, he illuminates the interior. The sight leads him to drop the light. Inside the cave are the three shaman, or what is left of them. The first two are little more than bones, the flesh having long been stripped from them. The third is slightly more fortunate, being only half consumed. All three bodies are nude and tied with some restraints around their hands and feet. A forth body is a boy of maybe thirteen. He's also dead, but is fully intact, with no signs of being consumed. He's been stabbed several times. Colorados' eyes widen in horror. "Kuruk... He was Valor's apprentice. I sent him to ask the shaman for permission to bring you here. I sent him here..." All four bodies have the now sadly trademark injection marks around their lungs and heart. At first glance there is no sign of the killer, or any sign of where he could have gone. The room goes back a bit way, but there are no obvious places he could be hiding. On the floor further back in the cave lies a gun. Any agents who have more than a passing familiarity with firearms identify it as a Lee-Enfield Mark III Rifle. It seems to have been rather carelessly discarded right in the middle of the cave. The only other objects of note are clothing strewn around the cave, likely the victims. A few bowls that contained food and drink are also present; these seem largely empty. Finally, at the far end of the cave there's some sort of sphere. It's semi-transparent, and slightly larger than a basketball. It looks to be made of a dark blackish material but the team can nonetheless see various lights and circuitry within the sphere. None of the agents have ever seen anything even remotely similar to it. [ooc]Okay, few things here; 1. Everyone needs to make a san roll for violence, 0/1d3. This would normally be 0/1 but the sight of the young boy makes it harder to stand. 2. Everyone can make a forensics roll if they want to examine the bodies. 3. Everyone can make a Search roll. Let me know if you guys want to try anything else.[/ooc]

Retrieving Garrett's gun, Standard takes position using a rock as partial cover and arm rest as he steadies his aim at the cave entrance. When the group starts to advance, he releases three shots in rapid succession. Hoping this will keep the gunman out of shot.

At this point, Vanessa is getting used to the carnage. She looks around the cave, but nothing else jumps out at her. "There has to be another way out of here," she says. "Maybe there's another passage in the back or something, but I can't see one.' She professionally examines the crime scene, marking off the locations of key pieces of evidence such as shell casings and giving the dead bodies a closer look. They were more freshly dead than the others they'd found, so the forensic evidence should be better preserved.

Cave Group,,[ooc]Rolled in Dice thread, Edmund loses 3 san. Do you want to project that onto a bond? http://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/pbp/viewtopic.php?f=399&t=5891#p187670 Also be sure to check suffering one san lose from violence. If you suffer three without going insane or reaching your breaking point, you can become adapted to it.[/ooc] Stanyard fires several shots at the cave entrance to give his team some covering fire. Unfortunately for him, Garrett did not keep his gun in the best condition. The pistol jams on the second shot, and he spends an embarrassing moment fixing it. By his time the cave has been breached, and no signs of gunfire are being heard from within. He can make his way unmolested inside if he likes. It's a tough sight for Edmund.Violence was part of a field agent's life, but this was absolutely savage. Judging by the state of the bodies, the meat had been cut off the men by a sharp knife. Vanessa observes that the men were probably being fed from for several days, judging by the decay. The empty bowls of food also seem to confirm this. The killer had been keeping the Shamen alive and picking pieces from them. It must have been a hellish few final days. Vanessa also grabs some prints from both the bodies and the rifle especially. She knows that once she gets back to the station she can send them to the FBI's national Fingerprint Index, which should be able to get them a match within half a day if the killer was within the system. Colorados still seems somber, but he moves forward as though inspecting the cave walls. Suddenly, he points upwards. "Here." Examining the spots, the Agents find a narrow 'vent' within the stone wall. "It's a tough fit, but our killer could have squeezed through here and gotten out of the cave at a dozen points. I'll call in help to search this area of the land, but this man seems to be an expert at skulking about. I suspect he's already fled the area while we were waiting for reinforcements. And it will be night soon, making the search harder. "If there's any blessings, he left in a hurry, and would have been unable to carry much of his gear. He left his rifle behind, and this." He picks up the sphere. The lights inside of it are rapidly shifting from one color to another. ""What could this be, anyway? I haven't seen anything like it before." He offers it to any of the agents who would like to examine it.

Cave Group,The Sphere itself weighs only a few pounds, its exterior feeling both metal and plastic. Looking it over, Vanessa finds no apparent way to open it, despite the lights inside. "Well we'll take it back to the station. Maybe someone there can get it opened. Or maybe once we catch this sonofabitch he'll tell us what it is." says Colorados. "If there's nothing else, let's return to the station and regroup." [ooc]If Stanyard enters the cave he needs to make a San roll as well for seeing the bodies.[/ooc]
Nik,Nik has only a small amount of time to ponder the new information before the casino's security room is entered by one of the staff. "Uh, I just got a report from the reservation police. Apparently there was a shooting out near the shaman's cave. I don't know all the details, but they requested you head back there at once."
Everyone,Midnight, roughly six hours later. The next several hours are a blur of paper work and frenzied activity. Vanessa sends the prints off, and expects to have results by the early hours of the next day. Garrett was taken to a hospital in Phoenix, his condition stable. Deputy Paul was taken to the station's morgue. As for the mysterious sphere, it was placed in evidence lockup for the time being. Nik is filled in on the sudden ambush out at the cave by the unseen assailant, and the grizzly fate of the shaman and their apprentice. The team find themselves reunited in the briefing room, Sheriff Colorados with them. Every few minutes a deputy rushes in and hands him an update on the investigation. At some point a pot of coffee was brewed, and it seems to be the only thing keeping him going, the adrenaline having long since faded. "I just recived a report. Our patrols around the cave found nothing. I'm not surprised. The ground out there is rough to tread, and our unsub had darkness on their side. We're going to perform a heavy search of the area tomorrow, and you're all welcome to participate." He leaned back and sighed. "Paul had a lot of promise, and he was a good kid. I can't help but feel I caused his death. Something felt off. Why didn't I say something? And Kuruk... he'd still be alive if I hadn't sent him to that damn cave. Even Garrett got injured because I made a bad call." [ooc]Everyone can make a HUMINT roll. Success indicates Colorados has survival's guilt which is causing him intense self loathing at present.[/ooc] There came a knock on the door and a deputy poked his head in. "Uh, Sheriff? The press is outside. We tried to keep it under wraps, but an incident like this, you know..." "Yeah." The sheriff nodded. "Don't worry about it. I guess the hounds want a statement?" "Uh, yes sir." Sighing, Colorados got to his feet. He seemed to have aged a decade in just the day. "Alright. I'll give them what they want." He leaves the room after the deputy, and for the first time in awhile, the four agents are alone.

Nik

Before he heads back to the station, Nik prints off an image of the woman from the surveillance tape. He gives it to the casino security manager with the instructions to circulate it among the staff and to call him if she is spotted.

The mood amongst the team is subdued following the events at the cave, but Nik doesn’t want to waste time, as the assailant is not going to stop killing.

Addressing the other agents, he runs through what he has found out.

“In July, following the meteor shower which we learned about from our mystery helper, there was a rash of killing in Berkeley County, West Virginia. I believe that this might be our helper.” He shows the images of the woman at the casino.

“All the killings I’m going to talk about happened in the same way – bodies partially consumed and the hearts and lungs injected with an unknown substance. In this case, the police believed the killer to be a Mack Tooley, who subsequently shot himself. Immediately following the autopsy, the head coroner, Dr. Clark, resigned.”

"Now get this – the Center for Disease Control showed up and took the bodies of Tooley and the victims away. A week later Clark’s body is found in Nashville. He had committed suicide by disemboweling himself.”

He carries on. “In September in Nashville, there is a spate of killings among homeless folk there. They had all stayed at a shelter run by Father Willard Franklin. Before he is arrested, he kills himself. Guess how.”

“In October, the same kind of killings occur in New Orleans. Chief suspect this time is an Elijah Jackson. He had stayed at Franklin’s shelter. He is killed while invading the home of David Charles. Charles travels to Houston, where he is found dead of disembowelment. Detective Braverman was one of the first cops on the scene”

He sits and looks at all of the agents in turn. “This thing is travelling around the country, switching from person to person until it has to move. My guess is that we are dealing with some kind of virus, which makes a person kill and consume their victims. It must have been developed by the same person who made the paralyzing drug. This would explain why the CDC is involved.”

“It is essential for our own safety, and in order to stop this thing, that we take utmost precautions when we apprehend the suspect. Whoever comes into contact with this virus can be infected. We need to stop it. I propose we contact the CDC for help.”

As he stops to let his words sink in, he calls for one of the deputies to bring the artifact they found at the cave. He’s curious as to what it is.

At the cave-
b]Stanyard heads in the cave when it's cleared. The sigh, however gruesome, seems to bounce off of the ex-sniper. Too late to see what the group actually took from the scene, he exits and helps with carrying evidence from the site.

At the station-
Listening to Nik's presentation, it sure sounds as something contagious. Before the officers bring the collected evidence to the table, he asks. "Where in the chain of events are we now? Whoever was last at the cave, and escaped alive, is now carrying this disease? And if someone were at the other burial sites the virus could have spread to other carriers, right?" He stops and scoots the chair back to make room for whatever the officers need to place on the table.

"It does seem like a contagion in some ways," says Vanessa, "but what kind of disease only infects one person at a time? I hate to say it, but it sounds kind of like demonic possession, like in the movie Fallen. You're right, we'd better contact the CDC. They were already involved in the case, and we need to know what they know. I'll do that; I speak the medical jargon."

Nik

"Thanks Marchand".

Nik addresses Stanyard. "Whoever was in the cave is your present killer. The transfer only seems to occur when the host is damaged. The examples of Mack Tooley and Elijah Jackson indicate this. So I think the virus must still be in the present host. When we capture him, and if we have to open fire, which I’m guessing we will, that’s when we have to be careful.”

Stanyard, remember you said that Braverman’s car skidded off the road? I’m guessing that he was badly hurt, and so the host transferred to somebody who came along”.

He speaks in an urgent whisper to everyone. “It has to be a local! Who else could've approached the Begays? Who else would know about the cave? The sheriff or one of his men must know who this person is, even if they’re not aware of it. We should ask him about anyone other locals who have gone missing or who are acting weird lately”.

He turns then to examine the cave artifact. “What the hell is this thing?” he thinks.

Nik examines the sphere. It's a fascinating piece of technology. The circuitry is like nothing he's ever seen before, though without being able to examine the insides he can't get much more out of it. Whatever it is, it seems very advanced. It must also be using up a quite a bit of juice, so it must have be internally powered. But until they could devise a way to get the thing opened, it's going to be very difficult to do any further research on it.

As Vanessa goes to call the CDC, her own phone starts to ring.

"Agent Marchand? SAC Hobbson here." came the voice of her boss. "I've been briefed about the shootout. I hope none of the team were injured.

"Listen up. The NSA have taken an interest in the case, so we're handing it off to them. A team of agent sis on their way to San Carlos. When they arrive you're to cooperate with them fully, is that clear?"
OOC:   Vanessa should go ahead and make a HUMINT roll. A success indicates that Hobbson sounds very anxious, which is uncustomary for the man.

"Understood, sir," says Vanessa. "The team is fine. The deputy here was killed, though, and Major Garrett was wounded, but we managed to get him to safety. What's the ETA on the NSA's arrival?" She makes a mental note to suggest using an X-Ray or MRI to try to look inside the sphere, and to point out that the contagion could have jumped to Braverman's still missing wife if she was with him when he killed himself.

And they made it equally clear it was not my place to ask questions. Just cooperate with them and don't give them any trouble. I don't want to see this become a bureaucratic pissing match." If there's nothing else, Hobbson hangs up.

It's around this time that a deputy knocks on the door and pokes his head in. "Um, Agent Siilasvuo? Someone from the hotel stopped by. They said they had the evidence you requested." He places it on the table. Notably, it's in the same box that the news clippings had been found in.

If it's opened, the only content is a note, and each letter had been cut out from various magazines, granting the whole letter a distorted look.

Friends,

I see you've enjoyed those news clippings I sent. Hopefully now you all have a better idea as to what you're going up against. Now listen up, because I have another piece of advice for you. The spooks in the shades and dark suits aren't your friends. They're only after the sphere, and if you're in their way, your badges won't protect you. Let them have it. “What came in the sphere?” Nik eyes the artifact with growing alarm. “She’s saying that the virus was carried in this thing!” His stomach is churning – he thought that this assignment might be a gateway to a bright future, but it’s looking to be anything but.

He looks at the note again. “What suits is she talking about? And who the fuck is she?” he asks the others. “Personally all I want is to get whoever’s killed all of those people, but I’m way out of my depth.”

He looks at Marchand. “I think Braverman’s wife is buried out in the desert somewhere. This killer is local, he has to be. I want to talk to Colorados on the level. And I don’t care if his feelings or beliefs get in the way. He knows something.”

Vanessa fills in the others about her phone conversation. "We don't have much time before they take this case from us," she says. "We need to see what's inside this sphere. X-Rays should do the trick. It doesn't feel heavy enough to be made out of lead. MRI would be better, but we're not likely to find one here. Oh, and there's another possibility about Braverman's wife. Maybe the infection spread to her when he killed himself, and she's the killer. She'd probably be small enough to fit through those vents in the cave."

The door opens, and Colorados reenters. He looks worn down, not a surprise after dealing with the press.

"They're out there, hounding for blood. Not a surprise, I suppose."

He looks towards the sphere. "Any luck in figuring out what that thing is?"

"Not yet Sheriff" says Nik. "We'd like to x-ray it if we can."

"I'm sorry about Paul" he continues. "This thing has taken too many of your friends. How do you think the killer knew about the cave?"

"I made the call to his wife. She's pregnant. She...hadn't told him yet, was hoping to surprise him." He sighed. "First officer I've ever had die on me. All we can do is catch this man, and I use the term loosely before he kills again."

"I don't know how he knew about the cave. Come to think of it it's very out of the way. Most outsiders do not know about it." It's obvious this thought disturbs him. "But I don't know anyone who could have done it either. The only criminals around here are small time. Not killers, and definitely not cannibals."

"As for the X-Ray. I'll be right back. We just got a portable X-ray machine a few months ago. I'm sure some of the techs will be eager to try it out."

A few minutes later he brings back the X-ray machine. Taking the sphere, he places it on the machine and presses a button. The machine springs to life.

And then immediately shuts down.

"This piece of crap cost us thousands of dollars! And it breaks down on the first use?" He lifts the sphere off it, and the machine immediately comes back to life, right where it left off. Coloraods frowns, and places it back down again. It shuts off again. Taking it back off has a predictable result.

The sheriff looks baffled. "I think we may have to cut it open to get any answers."

There comes a knock on the door, and a nervous looking deputy pokes his head in.

"Um, sheriff? We have a team of NSA agents out front. They're demanding to speak with you. All of you, actually," he says, taking note of the FBI agents.

"Now hold on," Colorados protests. "I never requested any additional assistance, much less from the NSA. Tell them I'll be right out."

"Well sheriff, they're heading this way right now. What should I do?"

Colorados cursed. "Let them in, I suppose." he turned to look at the agents. "This is why I was hesitant to accept your government's 'help.' Our people know well that it always comes with strings."
OOC:   If anyone has anything they'd like to say or do before the men arrive, now's the time.

Edmund holds up his hand and addresses Colorados directly.

"Woah there Sheriff, our brief was to observe and help where you needed us to, so I don't think that we were responsible for bringing the NSA in on this. After all it's not as though we're kissing cousins after all."

Nik

“Yeah” says Nik. “The less we have to do with the National Society of Assholes, the better.”

He points at the sphere. “That thing is pretty useless in terms of helping us find the killer. Why don’t we just hand it over and then get back to hunting down this bastard? Sheriff, if you don’t think an outsider would have known about the cave, it makes it unlikely that Mrs. Braverman would have just come across it”.

He speaks urgently, the NSA are waiting. “Sheriff, the killer must be living in the desert. It’s not like he can just stroll in to a motel and get a room. This person knows the area – the virus must have infected one of your locals. Is there anyone you know who has gone missing or has been acting strangely lately? And if you don’t know, who would? The bodies are piling up, man.

"Virus... infected?" Colorados looks confused. "What the hell are you talking about?"

But it is at that moment that the door opens, and a team of four men enter. They pay the deputy at entrance no mind.

The two in the back are near identical. They wear dark shades and suits, and their hair is trimmed in a military style cut. Powerfully built, they both seem like they've seen some action.

The third man wears a lighter suit. He glares with what appears to be some disdain at the sheriff and agents. Overall though, he appears disinterested.

The man who makes his way to the front is a very thin man. He looks to be in his mid thirties, with light brown hair and piercing blue eyes that are uncomfortable to look at for very long. He's very pale, almost like a corpse. It is he who speaks first.

"Sheriff Colorados, assembled agents." His voice is barely above a whisper. "I trust that you've been briefed on our arrivial?"

"Actually, no." Colorados says. "This is the first I'm hearing of it. And let me remind you that..."

"I wasn't speaking to you." The man cuts in. "I was speaking to them. SAC Hobbson should have called you and informed you of our arrival. I do hope he made it clear that we're officially taking over this investigation."

"On what grounds?"

"National security, of course. It's the only reason we'd take an interest at what goes on here at all." The man's lips curl into a mimicry of a smile, and he flashes a badge.

"Agent Richard Palmer with the National Secrecy Agency."

"Agent Vanessa Marchand, FBI," says Vanessa in greeting, though she doesn't reach out to shake his hand if he doesn't extend his own first. "SAC Hobson did call me and inform me that you were coming. You have our full cooperation."

Palmer does not offer his hand, but his smile gets slightly more legitimate as Vanessa shows she's not planning to butt heads with him.

"Excellent. SAC Hobbson told me you are in charge here, Agent Marchand. I hope your subordinates are equally sensible. But I'm sure that they are.

"So where was I? Oh, yes. Sheriff Colorados, does the name Emanuel Santana ring a bell
?"

Colorados looks startled, but does his best to recover quickly. "Yes. But what does that have to do..."

"His prints were found on the rifle used in the recent assault on your men. Given the circumstances, you can imagine why we are interested."

"That's absurd. Emanuel would never do such a thing!"

"Emmanuel?" The lips curl upwards. "You sound as though you know him well." He turns to address the others.

"Emanuel Santana, age forty eight. Master Sergeant in the U.S. Special Forces, he served in Vietnam and deserted in 1971 while on leave from the army to attend his mother's funeral. Due to his involvement with Operation PHOENIX he was considered of interest to national security. We've been very interested in him for a very long time.

"We suspected he was hiding around San Carlos, but the sensitive nature of relations with the Apache kept us from moving in. But now that we can add 'cannibalistic serial killer' to his resume, why I think that's all the justification we need
."

"Now wait just a goddamn minute here! I've known Santana for over twenty years. He's a hermit! He keeps to the wilderness, he'd never commit these sort of actions."

"Oh, we think he would. More to the point Sheriff, you've just admitted to aiding and abetting a federal fugitive. Were I in a worse mood I'd have you thrown in jail for it. But if you're willing to cooperate with our investigation... maybe I can overlook it."

The Sheriff says nothing.

"Good. The first order of business is for you to hand over any and all evidence you've found during this investigation. Crime scene photos, forensic work and autopsies reports... and that." he points to the sphere.

"The crimes took place on our land. The sphere stays with us."

Palmer looks surprised for a moment, before the amused expression returned. "My mood is beginning to sour, Sheriff Colorados. I won't repeat myself. That object is of national security interest to The United States."

"And what is it, exactly?"

"Part of an experimental spy satellite that fell from orbit."
OOC:   HUMINT rolls; he's lying his ass off and not even trying to hide it.
He motions to the man in the lighter suit. Unless stopped, he picks up the sphere and retreats with it, looking it over with some degree of poorly disguised fascination.

"Secondly, your role in this investigation is from now on limited to dealing with the press. My boys and I will track down Santana on our own."

"Colorados protests. You don't know the land like we do. How can you hope to catch him, if he is indeed the culprit?"

"It's taken you twenty years to catch him, Sheriff. I think it's time we step in." He regards the others. "As for you, Agents, your roll in this case is concluded. You can return to Phoenix in the morning. Or you can stay and enjoy your taxpayer funded vacation. Just don't get in our way and we won't have any trouble.

"Do we understand each other?"

Nik

Nik watches this exchange in fascination. While he hates the heavy-handed and arrogant attitude of the NSA agents, he is royally pissed off at Sheriff Colorados. He knew the killer must have been known to the Sheriff, and he feels he could have gotten the information out him sooner or later. But he is surprised that Palmer wants to take down this Santana character with just his own men. To be honest, there probably isn't much difference between Colorados and Palmer, they are both wannabe big men in their own worlds.

"Fuck these assholes, lets go home" he thinks, fed up with the whole thing.

"Very good." Palmer nods in approval. "Sheriff, will you get us the rest of the evidence willingly, or do I need to get rough?"

"Do what you will."

Satisfied, the men leave. Colorados slumps down in a chair.

"I never thought Santana could be involved. Yes, I harbored him. It was an open secret he was in San Carlos. But he kept to the wilds and was a hermit. I know for a fact he renounced killing after Vietnam. That he could be behind this... I'm torn. Part of me thinks this is a government sting to provide justification for the capture of an innocent man. But the more I think of it, our killer clearly has combat training. And Santana fits the bill.

"In any event, I don't know why I'm telling any of you this. You'll be heading back to Phoenix tomorrow, I imagine? I can't imagine any of you wish to disobey Palmer. Regardless, I thank you for your assistance, each of you were of great help, and I will be sure to tell SAC Hobbson you knew your place. Especially you, Agent Marchand. If you weren't there at the cave, things could have been a lot worse.
"

Unless there is anything else, the group returns to their hotel for their final night in San Carlos. This mystery, it would seem, will remain unsolved.
OOC:   Let me know if any of you want to say anything to Colorados on the way out. I'll try and get part 2 of this post up later today.

"Thank you, Sheriff Colorados," says Vanessa. His hand she gladly shakes. "I just wish I could have saved Paul too. If it's any consolation, Santana may only be killing because he's been infected with what we believe to be some kind of contagion that drives people to cannibalism and murder. It seems to jump from person to person, and it only seems to affect one person at a time. Maybe it's a parasite of some sort. I think that's why Braverman ultimately killed himself. From there his wife was most likely infected, and then she could have infected Santana."

"This all sounds like science fiction to me," Colorados admits. "But I'm not about to question it. We Apache know well that there is more to life than meets the eye. I can only hope your NSA friends catch Santana before anyone else is injured."

***

The team returns to the hotel. After a quick meal and perhaps a little recreation, they all eventually go to bed, where they eventually drift off to a dreamless sleep.

It does not last long.

All are awoken by the ringing of a phone. It's just after 4 in the morning, so they've only been out around three hours. On the other end of the line is Colorados.

"Get down here right now. The station was just attacked."

***

Reckless driving gets the team there within ten minutes. Officers cordon off the building, and the first press people are forming outisde the building. But the agents are let in without trouble, and Colorados meets them in the front. There are tears in his eyes.

"Three deputies were on duty at the time of the attack, which we're estimating was around a half hour ago. All three are dead." He leads them inside.

At the front desk an officer leans back in the chair. He stares ahead blankly with lifeless eyes. His throat has been cut, and his scalp removed with some blade. Perceptive members of the team notice his sidearm is missing.

The sheriff leads them down the hall, past the briefing room and further into the station then they had previously been. A door is open, and it quickly becomes evident it is a bathroom. Another dead Apache officer sits on the toilet. His head is a mess, and it's obvious he has been shot at extreme close range. Blood pools a this feet and drips out into the hallway.

Next to the bathroom is a set of stairs. At the bottom of it are the doors to the morgue and the evidence lockers. Colorados heads towards the latter. Inside the room is a slumped over officer. He appears to have been shot in the chest at least three times and is now in a pool of his own blood. Like the others, his scalp has been removed.

The room itself is a mess. Lockers have been forced open, their contents all over the floor.

"We have security tapes of the incident," says the sheriff. "It's Santana. I confirmed it with my own eyes. I'm willing to share them with you, but the basic summary is this; Santana made his way in around the back of the station. He snuck to the front and ambushed Keith- the front guard- from behind, slitting his throat and taking his gun and scalp for good measure. Then he headed towards the back. He stops for a moment, seeming to notice the bathroom light is on. Opening the door, he fires one shot point blank into Johnny." Colorados voice wavers, and he takes a moment to recover.

"Finally he goes downstairs, enters the evidence room, and shots Richard. In all three cases none of my men were even able to draw their guns. Richard does not die right away. Santana watches him for a moment as he moves about in agony. He says something to him, but we don't have audio. Then he reaches down and removes the man's scalp while he is still alive.

"Finally, he goes to the evidence lockers and shots them open. He's casual at first in his searching, but soon it becomes more frustrated, and he starts to toss things around. After about five minutes he leaves the room, whereupon he does a quick search of the rest of the station. Apparently not finding whatever it is he's looking for, he leaves through the window he came in from
."

"I don't know what made him do this, if it was a virus or something else. But These men will be avenged. And right now, I don't give a damn if your government wants to throw me in jail for it. The murders tonight put this back in my jurisdiction. I'm going to begun a search of this whole reservation to find this sonofabitch and take him down. I know it is a lot to ask, but I hope I can count on your teams support. I'll evne offer your agency full credit for the take down. I just want him stopped."
OOC:   Alright. 0/1d3 San roll for the horrid scene. These men were in the background, but your agents saw each of them throughout their time here, and so it's a bit disturbing that they're all suddenly now dead. I see Vanessa has two violence checks already; if she fails this roll and loses any more san without going insane she becomes adapted to it. I'll leave it up to you if this is a good development or not ;) .

The imagery of savage death has been numbing Stanyard's senses. It's like it's not actually happening to real people... "This is sad, man. I'm on the NSA train right now, Colorados. You better have a seat and calm down. You're too involved. Right, boss?" He checks Vanessa for confirmation.

The sight of these men being so savagely taken out by what is obviously a professional at work is deeply disturbing. Edmund furrows his brow as he contemplates a wider picture.
Why do the countries of the world train these young men to kill so efficiently thinking:   and then discard them when they have outlived their usefulness. Seen it so many times with Vets in the past,
Taking a deep breath and blowing it out through his mouth as he watches the particularly harrowing scene where Santana shoots then kills Richard, Edmund struggles to maintain his calm. By the end of the (summation of the) video he is only just beaten to his affirmation that he will join in the hunt for Santana by Stanyard.

"Hell yes - anyone who could perform such blatant brutality needs to be contained at the very least. Count me in Sheriff." Edmund says out loud whilst getting a chair for the sheriff.
SilverPriest,"If not eradicated for everyone's saftey." he mutters to himself whilst his back is turned from the group.

"I'm with you too, Sheriff," says Vanessa, able to keep her emotions in check after witnessing the carnage. "Anyway, we're not defying the NSA agents, we're taking the initiative to try to save their lives, though I fear we may already too late. Santana was obviously looking for the sphere, but it wasn't here because they had already taken it. He'll be going after them next. We haven't a moment to lose."
OOC,Actually, I thought I was supposed to put a check whether I succeeded or failed at a roll, just as long as I didn't hit the Breaking Point. I only failed at one each of Violence and Helplessness until now. I've fixed it. Sanity roll (current level 73) for seeing the massacre: [dice]0[/dice]

Re: Puppet Shows and Shadow Plays

OOC:   I see Nik lost some SAN. You want to have him project that onto a bond, or take the hit?
And the process behind adapting is a bit complicated, but basically you're supposed to only check either Violence or Helplessness whenever you lose SAN without going insane from losing 5 or more or hitting your Breaking Point. So if this roll had been 1/1d6, as an example, and Vanessa had passed and only lost 1 point, you'd still check it off as one of the three you need. But if you pass a roll and lose nothing it does not count.

Going to move us on now. I'm sure you guys are itching for some action.
Colorados nods in appreciation to Stanyard and Edmund as he sits down.

"This is still native land. As such, if I appeal directly to the FBI for their assistance in bringing in a dangerous fugitive, I do not believe there is one thing Palmer and his cronies can do about it.

"I've already sent the remaining deputies out to do a house by house search of the reservation. If Santana took refuge nearby, we'll find him. Normally I'd be afraid he'd make a run for it, but something tells me he's going to stay put. He was looking for something here, and I don't think he's willing to leave without it.
"

***

An hour later, the phone rings. Colorados answers it, and his eyes widen. "Stay where you are, do not engage. We're on our way." He hangs up and turns to the group. "That was one of the locals. Santana was spotted at the Illanipi cabin about twenty minutes from here. I'm going to assemble a team. I'd like you all to provide backup."

A few calls later, five deputies join Colorados and the agents in the briefing room. All look sober and ready to avenge their fallen brothers. The Sheriff rises. "I've been to the Illanipi cabin. Here is a map of the inside, as I remember it." He projects it on the screen behind him. It's frankly a terrible drawing, but hopefully it gets the job done.
Drawing,
"The approach up to the cabin is tough. There will be next to no cover around, save for perhaps a rock or two. I propose I lead a team in through the front door, and draw Santana's attention. Hopefully we can catch him unaware, but if not, we will at least distract him. That's where you come in." He points to the back.

"Here are the two bedrooms in the cabin. Both have windows in the rear. While my local team is entering from the front, the FBI can breach through these and come out into the hallway. If all goes well, we should be able to trap Santana between us.

"I know this is a difficult assignment, so I'm prepared to offer you any weapon we have you might want. We're not an armory here, but we have some rifles and shotguns, along with a few grenades. You have free range to take anything you think may prove useful.
"
OOC:   Alright, let me know what you guys are planning to bring along on the raid. You all have Kevlar Vests that protect you from 3 points of damage, along with light pistol's that do 1d10 damage. But if you guys want more, here's some of what you have access to:

2 Kevlar Helmets (1 extra point of armor)
2 hand grenades
2 shotguns, (2d10, 5 ammo)
5 medium pistols (1d10, 15 ammo)
3 heavy pistols (1d12, 7 ammo)
1 light rifle(1d10, 20 ammo, able to burst fire)
2 Flash bang Grenades( uses Athletics skill, gives victim -40 penalty on all skills for one turn)

"We'll divide into two teams," says Vanessa to her fellow agents, "one pair to each bedroom. Whoever takes the lead in each team should take a helmet, a shotgun, a .45 automatic, and one of the flashbangs. I'll lead one of the teams myself. One of the two bringing up the rear should carry the rifle and a Beretta, with a .45 automatic for the other, and each of them can have a grenade. IDoes anyone want to volunteer to lead the other team?"
OOC,The medium pistols are most likely 9mm Berettas, given their stats, and the heavy pistols look like Colt .45 M1911s.

Silver Priest,Nik will project onto a bond, his father. Willpower is 11 WP: 1d4 1
Nik

The sight of the killings, both the bodies and the recorded footage, sickens Nik. He hasn’t seen such graphic violence before, and he wonders how and if they will be able to stop this thing. He knows that the virus will not cease, and that he has to go on. He knows that is what his father would do.

He sits down as he listens to Colorados and Marchand plan. But something occurs to him.

“Listen you guys, you need to remember what we’re dealing with here. Santana has this virus or whatever in him. It’s gonna transfer to whoever is in his vicinity when he dies. If that happens, one of us will be infected and carry on the killing. I say when he dies, ‘cause I don’t think he’s gonna come peacefully.”

He pauses. “I think we should burn him out”.

Nik finds some inner strength by reflecting on his father. He knew that stopping this was his duty, and it helped him to look past the grizzly scene. A small part of him however resented trying to live up to his dad. Why couldn't he just go back to Phoenix and let Palmer and his goons take care of things?
OOC:   Okay, Nik reduces his san loss to 1 point and can reduce his WP by one. He also loses one point with his father. I'll let you determine exactly why that is. Maybe Nik feels stressed living up to his father's code, or maybe he distances himself from him to keep him safe. It's a very minor loss however, so the effects are not too severe. You probably just call a little bit less.

Next post will probably be up tomorrow.
OOC:   Also,it looks like Vanassa, Stanyard, and Nik all would like a shotgun, but alas there are only two of them. As a suggestion the one of you guys who decides not to take the shotgun might want to take the rifle.

An hour later the group find themselves near the cabin. It's by a lake, in a portion of San Carlos where cabins are frequent sights, and is a modest two story building, unremarkable save for who apparently resides there. Night is steadily retreating, the first hints of light now filling the sky. Colorados had admitted that he was banking on Santana being asleep after his long night.

The sheriff sees Vanassa and Nik both equipped with a radio. "So we can keep in contact. If all goes according to plan, we'll all breech at once and overwhelm Santana before he can get a shot off."

"The cabin should be empty this time of year, good fortune for the family that owns it. I doubt Santana would be one to take hostages. Now, go behind back and prepare to breech."

Fifteen minutes go by. The agents inch up the back off the house and the bedroom windows. Save the sounds of nature, all is quiet.

And then the gunfire starts.

"We've been made!" Comes Colorados panicked voice over the radio. "Shit, we've got a man down! Continue to advance, we've no cover nearby, and we're sitting ducks here!"
"FBI, Get inside that cabin and cut him off!
"

Both windows stand closed, but the interiors of the bedrooms can be seen within. No one seems within either of them.
OOC:   How do the teams want to do this? They can try to force the windows, a str*5 roll will get them open. Or they can just break them and attempt to get in without getting cut.

OOC,Vanessa and Nik are leading the teams, but I don't think the others said which team they're on yet. Can two people try to force open the windows together, combining their STR scores?

OOC,It might, but there'd be a significant chance one person alone isn't strong enough to force the window. Anyway, Santana is busy shooting at the locals out front, and he can't be in two places at once.

"Let's do it," says Vanessa, nodding. "On three. One, two, three - breach!" At that moment, she works with her partner to try to force the window open.
OOC,I'm still not sure who my teammate is, so I'm not sure what my chance of success is. Depending on who's with me, I either have a 95% chance, or it's an automatic success.

Stanyard is ready by Nik's side to force the window they are covering.
"Why not just blast it open?" Stanyard readies the shotgun and aims taking a step back from the window. "Stay clear!"

Nik and Stanyard are easily able to get their window open, and can now climb into the bedroom.

Vanessa and Edmund struggle. Though the window should be easily openable, the damn thing seems stuck firmly in place. They'll either need to bash the window in or go in the same route as Nik and Stanyard.

The sound of more gunfire is heard. This time however, return fire is heard as well.

"What the helll?" The sheriff exclaims, but does not elaborate.
OOC:   For reference, it's been two rounds since combat started(Santana got a surprise round, and one round passed while you guys opened the window. You all can get inside and start down the hallway in round 3, and you should be able to get there and act by round 4.

Nik moves to the doorway, brandishing his shotgun, a Mossberg 500A. He stops, ready to move through. He sees that the other two have followed behind them, so that all four are now in the room.

He nods to Stanyard. "Cover me".

The team makes their way through the window into the bedroom. It's a tight squeeze, but all make it with mild to moderate discomfort.
The bedroom itself is small and unused. No signs of recent human habitation can be found within the room. There are some signs of them in the past; a few pictures up on the walls, tasteful furnishings, a lamp sitting upon a desk. But at the moment the room appears unused.

The team makes it to the door. Opening it, they find themselves on the left hand side of a hallway. Across from them is another door, presumably to the other bedroom. Down the hallway opens into a wide open space that according to the map serves as the living room and entrance to the cabin. Santana cannot be seen yet, but more gunfire can be heard.
OOC:   I'm going to speed this up. I assume you all are planning to move towards the firefight.
Cautiously, the team moves down the hallway. They are about half way down it when Santana emerges into their sight. The man seems to be fleeing, perhaps heading towards one of the bedrooms to make his escape. He pauses upon seeing the team.

Put simply, he's a wreck. The back of his head has been shot off, exposing his skull and his face is wrecked. The left side of his face is simply gone, as is most of that ear. His nose is likewise a mess, seeming to have been blasted off in the ensuring firefight. He's wearing an army shirt and khakis, both of which have been blasted full of bullets that have torn away at the fabric. He's covered in blood, and shouldn't be alive.

And yet, he is.

Seeing the group, what's left of his mouth forms into something approaching a feral smile. Throwing his pistol to the side, he pulls out a very sharp combat knife, and begins moving towards the group. The wounds he has inflicted prevent him from doing much more than limping, but his pace is methodical, even as he leaves a trail of blood behind him.
OOC:   Okay. First, everyone needs to make a san roll for unnatural, given there's no way this man should still be up. 1/1d6. Lose 5 or more and things might get interesting. This might be a case where bonds can come in handy.
That said, dex order:
Edmund,
Vanessa,
Nik,
Stanyard,
Santana

The hallway's cramped, so I'm going to say only two of you can attack right now. I assume this is the leaders of each team, but I'll leave that up to you guys to decide. You can retreat into the bedroom, where you all might have a little more space, especially to fire on him if he continues to advance. Or you can chance it in the hallway. He'll be eligible for point blank next round, and the advantage is one or two of you can effectively "block" him.

Santana will reach one of you this turn, but he won't get to attack until next round.

OOC:   As Vanessa is chucking concussion grenades around I think we'll let her be in front ;). The other agents would probably be affected in this enclosed space.
Nik's eyes grow wide at the sight of Santana, but nothing surprises him anymore. He wants to get this done.

"You wanna concuss him? Half his fucking head is gone! You don't think he's concussed enough already?" His head is ringing from the detonation, but he pushes to the front and takes aim at Santana's lower legs. He pulls the trigger of his Mossberg.

OOC:   To help me keep track, I'd like to clear a few things up.

Edmund and Vanessa are going back to the bedroom? I'm fine with ruling that Vanessa's grenade went way over Santana and exploded harmlessly behind him and the agents. A crit fail would have affected only the pc's, so you all dodged a bullet there.

Stanyard has lost 5 san. Does he want to project on a bond? If so, his loss will drop under 5 and he can act normally. If not, he'll be temporarily insane for several rounds. I'll explain more about that process if you chose to take the hit, but it will affect what actions he can take.

Edmund and Nik both passed their san rolls; I still need Vanessa's.

Nik's attacking Santana in the hallway. As such, he'll be the target of Santana's ire next turn. Congrats! Also feel free to roll damage for your attack.

Being the big brother he is, protector and a follow through, stand up man, he is shaken by the thing that once was Santana. Stanyard grabs the shotgun in a hockey stick gripe and advances at the shambling man. Getting close enough, he cross checks the wounded man, hoping to pin him to the wall of the corridor or to the ground. Doing so, he shouts, "Take out his knees!" He does his best not to look Santana in what's left of his face.

As the Santana thing approaches, Nik fires. The shot connects with his right leg and blows a chunk of it away, the bone hanging out from it in a unhealthy angle. Yet still he continues forward.

Stanyard grabs his shotgun and slams into the Apache, knocking him over and onto the ground. The man flails about wildly and ineffectively. But he retains control of the knife.
OOC:   Santana is now pinned. All attacks have a +20 bonus against him. Along with point blank if you get close, so I imagine just about anything would hit.

Santana does not act this round, so we go to a new one. Both Stanyard and two others can attack. Santana goes last, and can only attempt to escape the pin.

Edmund will get over to wherever Stanyard has him pinned and shoot at one of his knees

Kneeling down he places the barrel of the gun against the Apache's left knee and pulls the trigger. The smell of cordite fills the air and looking at his handiwork Edmund sees that Santana's knee has all but exploded (8 points worth), Blood and bone fragment have flown in many directions.

Vanassa and Edmund effectively ruin Santana's kneecaps, and it will be very hard for him to walk now. Yet still he shows no signs of stopping. He continues to struggle. Until, that is, Nik fires and his head dissolves into a gory mess. Abruptly, the movement stops.
OOC:   Anyone can make a medicine roll. A success indicates he's dead. Even without the roll though, that seems obvious.
As Nik searches for an accelerant, the front door opens and Colorados and another officer enter. Both look stressed and have their guns raised. When they see Nik though, relief flashes upon their faces.

"Is he dead? He took out three of my men. We had to have shot him at least a dozen times."

Nik finds a half full bottle of hard liquor. Shuffling through a few more drawers he finds a box of matches. Combined they should get a good fire started.

“Yeah, he’s down.” Nik waggles the bottle and the matches. “Get your men out of here Sheriff, this place is going up”.

Nik upends the bottle over the corpse of Santana, saving a bit which he splashes over a bed. He lights the bed, and then drops a match on the body.

“Get out of here before the virus does whatever it does” he says, thinking “Unless it’s already spread”. But he can’t afford such thoughts, without going crazy.

"Now hold on a second," Colorados protests as Nik begins to pour the alcohol on the corpse of Santana. "We need a body. All this talk of viruses, I've not seen any evidence to suggest that's what's happening here. Emmanuel's dead I say we get him back to the morgue and do an autopsy. See what he was hopped up on that let him shrug off so many bullets."

He looks towards the other agents. "What do you all think?

Stanyard, having just wiped the shotgun clean, double grips it again, and forcefully propel Colorados out of the cabin. "Stay clear Sheriff! The area is contaminated and must be sanitized. Agent Siilasvuo will deal with that. You will get the reamins to analyze, when we have secured the area. No need for you to get infected, Sir. We've already inhaled THE VIRUS." Stanyard shouts the last bit, with spit flying at the sheriff.

He pushes the sheriff out of the way, if he should try to pass the 'mad' agent.

"START the process, Siilas!"

He stands in the door frame and looks at the carnage outside the cabin.
Stanyard turns his back to the outside and nods to his fellow agents.

Stanyard's words fall on death ears. "We have protocol to follow. I'm not budging on that."

He does budge when Stanyard begins to move him towards the exit. The deputy follows, seeming to want to intervene but intimidated by the fed. Stanyard gets them both outside the cabin, and blocks them from returning or seeing what is going on.

Nik begins to pour the alcohol on the headless corpse. As soon as the liquid hits the body though, there comes a sound much like the ripping of a sheet. Something tears through Santana's chest, splitting it open and lashing out. The thing seems like a large worm, the size of a snake. It's pale white and looks to be about two to three pounds. It has no eyes or other distinguishing features except at the tip, where some needle like point resides. It is this point that aims directly at Nik and pierces his leg, the tip pricking his flesh for just a moment before extracting. Immediately Nik feels his body shut down, and he collapses onto the ground, fully aware of what is going on but powerless to act.Even as he tries to the paralaysis spreads, and soon he finds himself unable to do anything at all.

The worm retreats into Santana's ruined corpse.
OOC:   Sorry Honey Dog, but he rolled really well so no chance to even resist it. Nik's not not dead, just paralyzed until further notice.

Everyone but Stanyard can make an unnatural san roll for seeing this thing, 0/1d6. Nik also gets to make a special san roll for Helplessness, 0/1d3.

Stanyard did not see this, though he undoubtedly hears the commotion it causes. If he chooses to intervene he'll need to make the san roll for seeing this thing as well. Stanyard though can make an Alertness roll right now.

The round started with this worm attacking first. Everyone else can now act. The thing's currently hiding in Santana's ruined chest, but you all have an approximation of where it is and can attack it. Due to the protection it might have an armor bonus.

"F&%k, We gotta assume Nik's been infected now," he almost screams to anyone who'll listen. "We know how the thing get's passed on now anyway. Anyone got a match?" Edmund asks as he looks around for the bottle of spirits, hoping there will be enough left to finish the job. "Get Nik outs here agents- NOW!"

Also, I'm going to say you can reach Nik this turn but can't do anything else. If you want to move him, you'll need to wait until your next one.

Just waiting to see what Vanassa does before we start the next round.
With Stanyard no longer blocking the way, Colorados and the deputy return.

"You're not making any sense!" says Colorados. He begins to protest further, but Vanessa ignores him and pointing the gun, blows Santana's chest apart. Meat and blood go flying, staining the investigators. But something else does as well. The parasite seems to have gotten the worst of the blow, its makeshift literal body armor offering no protection. The creature explodes, fragments of its now eviscerated body covering the floor. A strange green ooze leaks out of it.It smells foul in a way that none of the agents can even begin to identify. The most recognizable part of the parasite is the tiny needle like "tip" which had previously attacked Nik. It remains largely intact, though separated and unmoving.

"What in the hell?" Offers the Sheriff, his eyes now wide. The deputy looks as though he's about to lose his lunch.

It is at that moment that everyone hears a coyote's howl. Strangely it sounds to each investigator as though it is right next to them, but there is nothing to be found, and the sound soon fades away.
OOC:   Combat can be considered over. Again. Nik's still down for now though.

"There's the killer," says Vanessa, lowering her shotgun and pointing at the dead parasite. "We'll take the remains back to the lab to find out just what the hell it is. It's over now, and I think the coyote is pleased." She heads over to Nik to see if there's anything she can do to help him.

Re: Puppet Shows and Shadow Plays

The agents quickly clean themselves up. The green "gore" of the creature does not appear toxic, coming off as easily as anything else.

The deputy excuses himself, citing the excuse of calling for backup. Colorados still seems stunned but numbly waves him off. Mutely he assists in the clean up.

There's nothing Vanessa can do, but after around five minutes Nik finds feeling returning to his limbs. With some support he can stand, and soon after he finds his strength returning.

"I still don't know what exactly went on here," says Colorados. "I'm amazed a little worm like that could have caused all this trouble. Maybe it ate away at the brain or caused anger in its host. Emmanuel was such a gentle man. But yes, I think returning to the lab would be wise. With the remains of the body. Or bodies, I suppose... Dr. Gutierrez will be very interested in studying them."

It's at this moment when the cabin door is kicked in. Four men enter. One of the men is recognizable as Agent Palmer with the NSA. All of themare wearing body armor and wielding assault rifles. At the moment, these rifles are pointed at the agents.

"Step away from the body!"

"What the hell are you doing?"

"Step! Away!" The men seem stressed, and it seems liable to escalate if their demands are not met.

Nik is thankful that his ordeal is over, he never wants to experience something like that again. He still feels a little woozy and leans against the wall to recover.

He is distinctly unimpressed by the arrival of the NSA agents.

“Where were you assholes while all this was going on? I bet you knew about this thing the whole time, you bastards.”

"We would have been here sooner," Palmer answers, "But none of you contacted us. If we hadn't heard the radio reports we'd not have come at all, and you'd all be facing jail time for obstructing a Federal Investigation."

Seeing the agents fall back, the men advance and examine the scene. Two of them keep their guns trained on the investigators, while a third leans down and examines the corpse.

"Shit. We're too late. Target package is deceased."

"Unfortunate."

"Yes. But we've never seen anything like this before. MJ-2 should be able to learn something from a dead specimen." The man pulls out a tube and begins carefully, almost reverently scooping up the parts of the parasite.

"Mind telling me what just the hell that thing was?' Colorados demands.

"Of course. Santana was on some sort of drug that evidently increased his pain threshold. He took a few more shots than expected to go down, but nothing more outrageous than that. I highly recommend all of you stick to that story."

"And if I don't? You are covering up a threat that hunted my people like dogs! And this has happened elsewhere. That Houston police officer..."

"A person in my position doesn't need to make threats, Sheriff. They should be obvious. Just play ball and accept the adulation that will come your way for stopping this dangerous lunatic. That goes for the rest of you as well. The FBI can have the credit on this one. You stopped a devious serial killer. Sure to do wonders for all of your careers. Don't ruin it by making up crazy stories."

The man finishes his evidence collecting, having scooped up every trace of the creature "I've collected everything that wasn't destroyed." He glares at the investigators, almost seeming to blame them for the confrontation.

"Understood." Palmer says, and the men begin to back up. Their guns are pointed at the investigators until they leave the cabin. The third man follows, carrying his test tube like it is a new born baby. Palmer is last out. He offers the group a chilling smile, and puts a finger to his mouth. And then he too is gone.

The sound of sirens fill the air. It would seem reinforcements are on their way.
OOC:   We're pretty much done here, but if you guys want to ask the Sheriff any final questions now's the time. My next post I'll try to wrap up the investigation and deal with the aftermath.

"So much for interagency cooperation," says Vanessa after Palmer and his men have gone. She nods at Nik's words. "It must have been awful. At least we stopped that thing and didn't let it continue its rampage. I've never seen or heard of anything like it."

Police soon arrive and whisk Santana's body away. An autopsy released later finds no signs of anything amiss.

***

Their work done, the agents prepare to leave the next morning. Colorados sees them off. "I want to thank you for your assistance. The things we've seen, I don't like it one bit. And I intend to get to the bottom of it. You folks do what you need to do. But I've lost too many good people to back down now. Even if that means jailtime for me, I'm prepared to accept it.

"That said, take care. You've all got a friend here if you ever need it
." He shakes all their hands.

***

SAC Hobbson is likewise very impressed with their work.

"Well done, agents. It's regrettable this case went national, but a grizzly murder spree will do that. Still, you all handled the delicate cooperation with the reservation and state police admirably. We couldn't have asked for anything more."

Here he hesitates. "This case. Something about it seems odd. The NSA involvement, for one. I don't know what happened and I don't want to know. But I thank you for not antagonizing the NSA.Their man in charge made it clear in no uncertain terms that if you defied them I would pay the price. Starting with my retirement pension. Heh, thanks to you all I can still go out fishing."

January 24th, 1999
The next week brings the team praise, respect, and a bit of envy from their coworkers. Soon enough though the agents are back to their day jobs. But the strange events they witnessed in San Carlos stay with them, preventing them from fully integrating back into mundane life.

The team may meet up to discuss what they saw, or perhaps attempt some research into it. But all of them receive an email on the morning of January 24th. It's from a clearly throwaway address, and entitled Curious?

Well done. You stopped the parasite and saved countless lives. All without losing any of your own. I am impressed. More importantly, the people I work for are.

You doubtless have questions, and I'm willing to give you some answers. Meet me at The Hall of Flame Museum today at Noon. I'll find you.

Be Seeing You,

Ms. Green.

The Agents recognize the museum as one dedicated to the evolution of firefighting. As luck would have it, it's right in downtown Phoenix, just minutes from their offices.

Nik has found it difficult to settle back into normal investigative tasks. He can't get the sight of the parasite and Santana's wrecked corpse out of his mind. He fingers the scar where the parasite bit him, which has luckily healed without problems.

“Well, I’m gonna see what she wants. I want to know why she didn’t do more to help stop it, if she knew so much about it. And who those goddam agents were” he tells the others.

Rue re-reads the e-mail for what must be the fourth or fifth time, rubbing his chin as he tries to ponder the identity of the enigmatic Ms Green. Muttering to himself he says;-

"How the hell did any of this get out? Surely those bastards at the NSA would have clamped down on anything like this - in fact this could even be a sting operation. There are just too many variables at play here to make any kind of sense of the situation. Best gather the troops together and talk this over before the meeting."

After reading it again he makes the decision to get in touch with everyone. Picking the phone up he dials and says;

"Hey there, we need to talk about this 'curious' e-mail."

Rue listens to the arguements trying to dredge up a case from his past.

"Guys, do you remember that Maxwell case back, oh some five year or so back, where we were getting anonymous tip-offs from someone? Turned out it was from a rival gang of arms dealers led by some German whose name escapes me at the moment. Anyhow we were getting these tips because they wanted us to remove Maxwell's group who they saw as their main rivals. So although she, if it is indeed a she, has proven helpful so far, it may not be the case. Just keep an open mind is all I'm saying. Krause, that was the name of the German, who I think Interpol managed to let escape if I remember rightly, bloody amateurs."

The Hall of Flame museum was rather modest in size, looking more like a small warehouse than anything else. The team arrive here at just after 10:30. They scan the surrounding streets, but find no signs of observation.

Entering they come to a receptionist.Tickets were 15$ a piece. "Ms. Green" had said nothing about compensating them for the admission.

Assuming all buy tickets, they are ushered into one of the two side halls. Inside is a wide open space filled with firetrucks and equipment. The exhibits start out from thousands of years ago but quickly grow more modern, and all have a brief plaque outlining when the tool was introduced and where.

There are only a few people wandering the hall this time of day. A middle aged man gawks at the exhibits, seeming enraptured with them. Every now and then he takes a picture. A family is over in the corner, tending to an excitable child and pointing at a particular firetruck. They are speaking loudly.

The last guest is a woman. She's in the center of the hall, turned away from the group. Her attention seems to be fixed on a particular exhibit, an early 1920's firetruck from Chicago. Even only seeing her from the back, Nik recognizes her as the woman he had seen on the tape. She's a dark skinned woman, tall and slender, and wears a slick suit. She makes no move to approach the team. Indeed, she does not even appear to notice them.

Vanessa suppresses a groan. Much could have been gained by observing Ms. Green, or whatever her name was, before drawing attention to themselves, as well as by observing the crowd to see if anyone was paying undue attention to her. Vanessa looks around now to see if anyone is doing so. She had clearly come here early as well, and she might not have come alone.

Nik is sure that Ms. Green has chosen this place for a good reason. There's hardly anyone here. She's much too careful to do anything which would attract attention. The easiest way to get information is to ask her directly who she is. She wants to communicate, after all.

"Who are you?" he asks.

"Ms. Green" turns around. She's wearing John Lennon style dark shades and dreadlocks. She smiles knowingly at Nik.

"I had a feeling you'd come early. Curiosity is a powerful motivation. Dangerous, but powerful." She looks towards the other agents. "Let's not insult each others intelligence here. I invited you here for a talk, not this cloak and dagger nonsense. Still, I suppose I can't blame you after what you've seen." She gestures for the team to join her.

"If it makes you feel better, you can call me Ms. Green. As for what I do... let's just say I represent an organization that fights things like what you saw in San Carlos."

"Tell me, have any of you heard of the town of Innsmouth? It's doubtful, unless you're big into conspiracy theories. but I'll provide you with a brief history lesson. In 1928, the US government heard some disturbing rumors coming out of the town of Innsmouth, Massachusetts. A raid was organized. It was expected we'd find booze runners or Reds, but instead the raid uncovered horrors you can't even begin to fathom. The town had been subverted, the elite and even many of the ordinary citizens having inbred with an alien intelligence. Their hybrids ran the town, and by the time the government had intervened had it fully under their thump. Their activities were directly subverting national security.

Conflict followed, and lives were lost on both sides. The town was essentially destroyed and wiped from the history books. But certain men in government had seen what was lurking out there, and they figured out there were worst threats than communists or tax evaders. They formed an organization within the government, and we've been fighting back against the sort of things we encountered in Innsmouth ever since.

"Sounds farfetched, I imagine. But you saw what was in Santana's body. That thing came from the stars, just one of many horrors out there. We've dealt with a few of its kind before. But we wanted to see how a team of the uninitiated would do. Think of it as a job interview. You all handled it well and knew enough to keep your mouths shut. So I'm here to offer you a job with the agency I work for. You'd be tasked with combating these sort of threats wherever they showed themselves. You'd never get credit for it or your name in the paper, but you'd be doing more to protect America and the human race then anyone else. Just think carefully before accepting. This is not the kind of club you get to quit
.

"I'm sure you have questions. Ask, and I'll answer what I can."

Rue shakes his head in disbelief and crosses his arms defiantly;

"look lady, and I mean no disrespect at all, but what may or may not have happened back in 1928 at wherever it was, just how does that affect what we experienced in San Carlos. And just what the hell was that anyway? We got our toes stepped on hard by them NSA creeps, I sincerely hope that you ain't affiliated with that mob 'cause it may have escaped your notice that there ain't no love lost between the two organisations."

"Does your organization have official sanction, Ms. Green?" asks Vanessa.

Re: Puppet Shows and Shadow Plays

Posted: Tue Feb 28, 2017 9:18 am
by Silver Priest
"We are," Ms. Green responds to Vanessa's question. "Though you're forgiven for not having heard of us. The work we do is by its nature vary secretive. Folks like your boss have been evaluated for recruitment, and for whatever reasons deemed unsuitable. Not everyone can handle it. We've been sanctioned since 1928 to deal with alien and unnatural threats to America. This planet's still here, so I'd say we've done a decent job at it.
"If you do join us you'd remain in your FBI. Due to the unique nature behind our work, our agents retain their day jobs. It has the added bonus of ensuring that if something unusual comes up, we're the first to know. And we find it's simpler to solve problems using the same agencies we recruit from.

"Your skepticism is warranted, Mr. Rue. What you saw was an alien race. It's not the same type that we encountered in Innsmouth; at least, we don't think it is. But its goals were equally a threat to national security. I know we've encountered that creature a few times, though it seems to be a rare visitor to our planet. Be very grateful for that. One was enough of a nuisance to deal with. If you want a name or a history of where it came from, we don't do that. Our focus is on eradication, not education. That's a dangerous road to go down.
"The men you saw were with another governmental agency. They claimed to be with the NSA, but that's doubtful. They masquerade as whatever's convenient. We know for a fact they posed as CDC workers at an earlier crime scene to steal away the bodies for research. It's probably why they let you keep Santana.
"You know how the best families can have the worst fights? That's sort of our relationship. Our philosophies are different. We want to stop these things above all else. They're interested in researching and trying to control them. Some of them are ardent cold warriors who never realized the conflict was over. Others want to turn the type of entities we encounter to their own ends. But you saw what that creature could do. I hope you all realize nothing good can come from doing anything but destroying it."

She pauses here, taking the moment to remove a newspaper clipping from her pocket. She shows it to the group. "If you need any further idea as to their intentions, take a look at this."
The paper is dated from that day. It's a short article.
Sheriff commits suicide

Sheriff Mangos Colorados, the embattled Chief of the San Carlos State Police is reported to have shot himself yesterday evening.

Colorados left a note confessing his guilt as having harbored serial killer Emmanuel Santana to hide within the San Carlos Reservation for decades. His wife found his body in the family's car ...
the article cuts off.

"My condolences. But you knew the man well enough not to believe the official story. Colorados to his credit refused to stop digging. So someone silenced him. Three guesses as to who. Shame, he'd have made a decent agent. But you can still honor his memory. Or you can decide this is too dangerous and go back to your normal lives. No harm in that; you're still doing important work. But this is a commitment unlike anything else. ."

Ms. Green listens to Nik's tirade silently, her face hiding behind her shades.

"I understand you're upset. But the sheriff was proven unsuitable for our line of work. He seemed unable or unwilling to keep silent about what he observed. And that's the number one criteria in our profession. We could not risk attempting to bring someone in who would jeopardize the work that we do. I do regret what happened to him, but there's a reason our competitors dealt with him and left you alive. You know the importance of secrecy, and that's why we're meeting here today.

"I know it may seem frustrating, but think about it. How many people could handle what you saw out there if it was on CNN tomorrow? Or fishmen breeding with humans? Do you think the public could handle that? Do you think they could
," here she nods towards the happy family, who are currently stopped at an exhibit while their child points in excitement, "deal with having their safe and secure reality crumble? What about your family or loved ones? Do you want them to know what's really out there? If even a fraction of this stuff got out it would cause great upheaval in society. We've made the determination that we can't handle this being exposed. Maybe someday, maybe if God forbid we have to. But that day's not today.

"That's why we tested you. If I came up to you earlier, before San Carlos, and explained this to you none of you would have believed me. Our line of work has to be seen to be believed
."

She watches Stanyard as he starts to leave. "Fair enough. You won't be contacted again."

"I guess most people can't handle this sort of thing," says Vanessa. "If it got out of control, though, they'd find out the hard way. I guess that's why people like us who can handle it have to keep that from happening, to protect those who can't."

"Alright, I'm in."

He watches Stanyard depart in silence.

" I want to know more about what we're up against though. You'd better be prepared to tell us more about the opposition, both human and... other" he finishes, with heavy emphasis on the last word.

He can't believe he's saying this, but that creature was awful. If there are more, they have to be stopped.

"So if they were not NSA, sorry to keep on at this, but I wan to know what I might be about to sign up to, just what were those guys, other than your competitors? And what makes your side any better than theirs exactly? It seems to me that if you have information about these creatures then surely it should make getting rid of them a whole lot easier." Rue asks Ms Green after Nik agrees and Stanyard departs.

"And I agree that it was a shitty think to kill Colorados, and yet can see your point as well - it was a hard decision to take I guess, but that's the game we are in."

"They're a rival branch in government. Founded after us, and for different purposes."

She appears to be weighing something before she answers. "We don't negotiate with things like what was in Santana's chest. They do. We have, in the years since Innsmouth discovered other organized conspiracies against humanity. Our competitors have gotten in bed with them. Reached an understanding. They justify it to themselves in the name of national security, but we see it for what it is; selling the human race out. One of our main goals is to put a stop to this, and find enough evidence against these things to lead to the breakdown of this pact. I can't say anymore. But if you want us to sum up the biggest difference between us it's this. They want to work with these things. We want to destroy them."

"We make tough calls in this line of work, I won't deny it. But the chief goal of our organization is keeping man safe and in the dark about what's out there. The two are fundamentally linked
."

After Edmund gives his answer, Ms. Green nods. "I'm glad some of you were willing to sign up. In a few days you'll all receive emails with further instructions. Your country thanks you, even if it can't ever know of your service." She offers her hand to the agents.

"Welcome to Delta Green."

Rue, Vanessa, and Nik all find emails in their inboxes. Each are from different throwaway addresses than before.
Application
You've all been approved. Welcome to the agency.

We are divided into small teams of 3 to 5 individuals. Each "cell" is designed with a letter of the alphabet. The lead cell is A, but the rest are equal in rank and authority.

You have been designated as S-Cell. When on duty each of you will be addressed by a name beginning with this letter. SUSAN, STANLEY, STEVEN. Chose your own code names. Never share your real name with anyone outside your cell, even other agents purporting to be from DG.

Lastly, chose a leader for your cell. They will be responsible for reporting in and keeping in contact with higher ups within the organization. Discuss it amongst yourselves and come to a consensus, and inform us of it.
When we have need for your skills we'll be in touch. If you ever need to get into contact with us place an ad in the personal section of the Phoenix Times asking for Ms. Green.

Be Seeing you, Agents.
