The Horror in the Blackout- Doctor Who Meets Call of Cthulhu

The Horror in the Blackout is the fifth adventure in a campaign combining classic Doctor Who with Call of Cthulhu. The first adventure, The Terror Out of Time, took place in 1930 London. The second, The Ninth Planet, took place on Pluto in 2112. The third, The Shadow Over Dunwich, took place in 1985 in Dunwich, England (a real place, not the fictional Dunwich in America). The fourth, The Brotherhood of Death, is set in Rome in 44 BC. It is not quite complete, but it should be wrapping up in April. You may read them if you wish, but you do not need to know anything about them (or about Doctor Who) to play in this adventure, which takes place in London in September 1940. Surviving characters may become companions and travel in the TARDIS for further adventures. The game is set to begin shortly after the current adventure concludes. Players will be expected to post at least twice per week, and I intend to match that pace. Players from previous games in this campaign are welcome to return, though except for those playing the Time Lord and his companions, you'll be playing new characters. One possible exception is that anyone who played in The Terror Out of Time may bring back his or her character, which would be aged ten years. New players are welcome to create characters as well.

So far we have the following players confirmed:
Jaysun81 (returning as Story)
Yockenthwaite (returning as Elizabeth Young)
Thorn (returning as Brook Davies)
Andyw666
DrkRoxas

I plan to set up a board in about a week and do character creation from April 8-16, when I'll be off from work, even if the current adventure is not quite done yet. That's when I'll actually have time to do it.

I've created the forum here. The OOC thread is up, and more threads on charater creation and background should be appearing over the coming days. Feel free to drop in when you're ready. The Brotherhood of Death, the previous adventure, is still not quite finished, but the end is now in sight.

There is still plenty of room in The Horror in the Blackout for new and returning players.

I wouldn't mind joining. I've just no clue where to start. I am a severe newb at this game so, forgive me; but I have some questions for this.

Regarding Character creation (I've already read your post on this so the actual mechanics of rolling a character are fine)
Do you want me to roll out a character or am I playing an already existing / pre-made character?
If I am rolling, which character sheet am I using?
Are you restricting occupations or are they freeform (within reason)?
Are you restricting nationality or can I pick (also within reason)?

Regarding the current timeframe
Is it still September 7th and during the bombing runs in-game?
Is there any alternate history so far?

Regarding PBP
I understand the use of 3rd party dice-rollers and how you require skill-checks via "spoilers"
How is dialogue order handled or is it also a "within reason" approach?

Sorry for a barrage but I am genuinely clueless about this.

@Hanith:
I think most of the skill rolls and such are operated on a GM-fiat basis. If you can think of a solution, you are welcome to roll for the outcome so long as you communicate it clearly. Same goes with character sheet. PM Mr. handy for concepts that you personally feel is too outlandish (90% skills require justification on WHY, and exotic nationalities requires a backstory on why they’re there).

There’s a built-in dice roller in-forum, so no need for registering third-party rollers (to my understanding). Dialogue order is determined by who posts first. Unless explicitly stated otherwise. All dialogue is in-canon unless it is too illogical.

There’s no current alternative history so far. We are on the second day of The Blitz. As far as I can tell, the only differences to real history so far is the escape of a mentally-ill patient, the existence of Maxwell sanitarium, and the existence of Time Lords/Time travel. I think Lovecraft’s creations are also mostly in-canon as well. Aside from that, nothing too pressing. ;)

Thank you,

You have the choice of taking over an abandoned character or creating a new one. The only abandoned character is Tinker, who would be complicated, so you might not want her. If you roll your own character, you should use the Modern sheet (with the additional skills of Anti-Aircraft Gun and War Prestige, both of which have a base level of 01%). The occupation may be freely selected within reason, as may nationality. London is a very cosmopolitan city, with people from all over the world calling it home (or at least living there temporarily). There are plenty of refugees from Nazi-occupied countries as well. However, enemy aliens are subject to additional scrutiny, and those who haven't already been vetted as refugees would probably be interned, or at least watched very carefully.

It is currently the morning of Sunday, September 8, 1940. There is not currently an air raid now that it is daytime. There is no alternate history so far aside from fictional characters, creatures, and events, though I try to blend those seamlessly with real ones. That said, this adventure does involve time travel, so the possibility of changing history has to be a concern.

Dialogue order is handled within reason, as HelplessBystander mentioned, in the order in which people post. Under most circumstances this is fine, but where time is critical, such as in combat, there may be a limit to how much you can say and when you can say it.

Got it. You want me to go ahead and roll out my character? I have a concept already and he's nothing outlandish. Once you get a look at him I'll assume you get to plug him in wherever you think makes the most sense. That, and I'm not confident enough in my writing to just drop him in wherever :P

Yes, you can go ahead and start creating your character in the Character Creation/Rules thread. If you have any questions, you can ask them by posting there. Once you let me know what occupation you have in mind, I'll let you know the occupational skill list. Once I've seen your character, I'll work out a way to introduce you into the story. Please avoid reading the In Character (IC) threads that do not involve your character, with the sole exception of Introduction in Episode 1, which everyone may read. After the adventure is over, you may then go back and read everything, but this will help limit player knowledge to what your character has experienced and will increase suspense when the investigators split. Welcome aboard, and have fun!

Welcome aboard, Shelfunit, and have fun! You can see the character sheets in this thread. The initial post lists all of the abandoned characters (they have MIA after their names), from which you can pick one you want. You can let me know your selection by posting here, or in the OOC thread in the game forum. Once you do, I'll let you know which threads you should read to catch up on the story so far. The first four adventures you are free to read in their entirety if you have the time and the inclination, but you should only read the IC threads in The Horror in the Blackout that contain your character, with the singular exception of Introduction in Episode 1 (which everyone may read).

Hi,
I think Mr Charles Davis might be fun to play, should be interesting trying to keep him as far away from combat as humanly possible.

Great, he's yours! You'll also have the least catching up to do with him, as he was added most recently. His player also dropped out soon afterwards, so he's the least defined, and you're free to shape him how you like.

After you read Introduction in Episode 1, all you have to read are the following threads in Episode 2 (currently in the main forum): Bloody Sunday and The Plot Thickens.

This weekend I plan to create a new thread for several characters who are returning to the church, where your character currently is. At that point you'll be able to join in the story.

Hello,
I'd like to join the game. I could take over an abandoned character if need be.

Great, welcome aboard! There are currently five abandoned characters. Air raid warden Eddie Lawlor is already involved in the story and doesn't have as much catching up to do, so he'd be the easiest one for you to take. Also available are Lord Rufus Colville, Reverend Archie Pennyfeather, Group Captain John H. Barrow, and Tinker. All of them would take a little work for me to get back into the story, and Tinker is rather complicated, plus she appeared in an earlier adventure you may not want to read, so you might not want to play her. Please let me know here which character you'd like by posting here, and then I'll tell you what you need to do to get caught up and started.

I think I'll play as Eddie Lawlor.

Excellent, he's yours! To catch up on what he's done so far, please read the following threads:

Episode 1: Introduction->The Eye of the Storm->The Storm Breaks->Rain of Death->Into the Storm
Episode 2: Prisoners of Time->The Long Night->Escort Duty->Buried->The Dead Girl->End of Shift
Episode 3: The Rescue

Once you've finished reading, you may post in The Rescue whenever you're ready, where you'll be with Brook and Eugene. Each thread (except for Introduction) has a hyperlink at the end to direct you to the next one. Do not read the other In Character threads, as your character is not aware of those events except from what others have told you. After the adventure is over, you may then go back and read everything. Have fun!

Welcome! There are a few abandoned characters you could choose to play. My most pressing need is for someone to play Brook Davies, one of the Time Lord's companions since the very first adventure (nine years ago in real time). Her player has been absent for months. However, it would take quite a bit of back reading to catch up, as she has been in all five adventures so far. It might also be a problem if her player ever does return. You could play Dr. Anna Jerkins, who is also already involved in the story. There's a lot of reading for her, though not nearly as much as for Brook, and there's a gap I'd have to bridge, but I could insert you right away. Other available characters are Reverend Archie Pennyfeather, Seamus O'Leary, or Group Captain John Barrow, You could also play Tinker, though she has been in one of the previous adventures and is rather complicated. Feel free to look through the Character Sheets thread to see which one you want. When you've decided, you can post to let me know in the Character Creation/Rules thread.
