Titanic horror?

I don't know if one is allowed to keeper two games simultaneously, or even if it wise to so. Apologies if not.

I have an idea about running a future set adventure. A small colony on Titan. Alien ruins. The alien hostile environment. The constant dark, the terrible cold. The madness of isolation.

And some aliens of the love craft mold.

Fairly fast paced, 2-3 players.

any interest or suggestions?

Yes, you're allowed to run multiple games simultaneously. Whether or not it's wise is another question. I ran three games at once at one point, but it was hard to find the time to do it. If you're up for running this game, I'm up for playing in it.

It may not be wise...

I'm still up for running it, although it would need some interest from others! (And thanks for the interest, Mr.Handy!)

PS: To reassure - maybe - the emphasis on this game is HORROR / Sci-Fi, rather than a blend of the two. Whilst there will be some practical considerations of a colony on Titan, I don't intent it to be hard-Sci Fi and have long debates about atmospheric conditions on the moon, or work out planetary distances and so on. The point of the setting is to have a group of people in extreme and stressful conditions who are almost totally cut off from the civilised world. Although there might be plasma pistols and tri-coders involved too!

2 is good to go then. Ill leave this open a bit for others to express interest and for me to gather my thoughts. In the mean time, I wonder if you both could give a basic skeleton of the character you want to play? What is their mission specialism? background? agenda, personality etc? and how long have they been on Titan (freshly arrived, or amongst the vanguard from 6 months ago?)

One rule I would like to instigate is that you are -1 SAN per month on Titan from the oppressive cramped environment. But of course being on their longer gives some seniority, authority, and knowledge.

PS: If one of you wants to play "captain" (or operational commander or whatever) thats fine. Or 1st officer (second in command). Just as long as you don't both want to! ;) I suppose other positions might include base medic, chief geologist, fungal farmer, and so on!

I was thinking of playing an engineer. I have one I created for a different horror/SF scenario that never got very far. That one had a bunch of new skills I invested in, but I can always rearrange the points. Her original character sheet is here.

When you're ready to start, let me know by posting the title of the scenario and a short text description of it here, and I can create the forum.

Enginner is good, nay vital.

Feel free to cannibalize your old PC. As this setting is a bit more "pulp" Sci Fi (arguably HP Lovecraft was a pulp sci fi writer anyway?) the skills will be a bit different. There will be a few new ones, and I actually may take inspiration from your PC.

On another note though, its a tough setting, and there will be tough PCs. In other words, feel free to choose your attributes, and to choose them high or exceptional. Colonists on Titan will be chosen from an exceptional group of people, and will probably have exceptional INT, EDU, and POW (and at least average other attributes bar SIZ and APP). If you are set on rolling, I suggest doing something like 2D6+6 for all attributes. If you want to go with Samantha, I would at least bump up her INT to 15+ and quite possibly modest bumps to her EDU and POW.

I'd like to play a stowaway that's just been rooted out of the supply ship and thrown into the brig. Small, sleight, but highly skilled electronics, bypassing skills, other sneaky skills. If that doesn't suit then I'll play either the muscular but easy-going chef or the obsessive head researcher.

An interesting concept!

I'll have to have a think if that can work. I'm all for accomodating that (pardon the pun), but will need a bit of contemplation. If not, both the chef (of some suitable sci fi fungus farm tastleless sludge, or head researcher [might be worth a speciality such as geology or physics or something] both work). It might be even possible merging the two.

EDIT: Question to consider for stowaway - what is the motivation for stowawaying? :)

Samantha is already exceptional, save for her APP (with which I can live) and her INT. I can bump her INT up, though having a low INT can also be an advantage in terms of being less susceptible to temporary insanity. Her POW and EDU are already above average, but I won't mind raising them either if you think it's warranted.

A few skills will need shuffling around but nothing too complex. Some good ideas on her sheet - although a colonist will have some slightly different needs to an astronaut.

Re: Stowaway; I think this can work, although it will need a bit of discussion. How did they stowaway and why, and what happens when they touchdown at the base?

The stowaway is the errant daughter of two eminent fungulcultural pioneers based on the large facility on Pluto. The family is contracted to work there for another three years, the daughter has no say in the matter until she is 21. She is 19 and desperate to return to Earth so hides in an empty hydroponics capsule on a returning supply ship which is due to stop at various facilities on the way back. She only gets as far as Titan before being found out; she is to remain in custody until a ship can pick her up and return her to Pluto.
Or:
The stowaway is one of the Romas; homeless people who nevertheless manage to make a living of sorts doing odd or distasteful jobs on board ships and at facilities they manage to get into. No one likes them around as they are reputed to be shifty and untrustworthy. However, it is best not to make an enemy of one because then you find all sorts of little things going wrong, missing or malfunctioning; best just to put up with the scoundrel, give him some work and food and then one day he'll be gone, as mysteriously as he arrived. The supply ship is carrying very sensitive cargo so when the stowaway is found, the captain pulls a big favour and arranges for the Roma to be dropped at Titan. The Roma is now sitting in the brig until the Titan authority decide what they are going to do with him. He has chalked up one against the supply ship Captain but, so far, has no gripe with Titan.

The second character could be much older and therefore more skillful.

Happy with either.

I'm happy with either too. The second one possibly appeals to me a little more as it brings in a lot of interesting conflicts; but your call!

In the absence of any other interest to date, Ill probably run with 2 PCs if thats ok.

Well I think its about time MrHandy be the gent he is and sets up a forum! Once done, I will put up a few rules and background. Ill use some of Samantha's ideas, but as this is about a colony rather than space, the focus is a little different.

Titanic Horror

In the late 22nd Century, there is a small human colony on Titan. Operational for six months, life is tough and challenging, but strange geological activity threatens to unearth alien horror and madness!





PS: MrHandy, My personal view on Samantha is she is great stuff, and its your character, your choice. That said, my only inclination (and its only an inclination, not a request) is that to be chosen for this mission you would have to demonstrate at least average, and probably above average INT; to be resourceful and ingenious. I appreciate that also causes vulnerability to insanity! I would suggest bumping her INT up to 14 or so; or, if you conceive of her as someone with an outstanding memory and learning capacity but with more limited inventiveness, something like INT 12 and EDU 18. That said I have absolutely no objections to you playing her as is.
