Classic Era original scenario. Any interest?

Post by Archaeopterix »

Been trying to gather interest on a non-Cthulhu gaming website, but haven't been able to hit momentum for it. I'd ideally like to find 4-5 active posters to run with. Setting is Spring of 1923 Arkham, MA. Looking to run horror/mystery, low pulp factor. Any chance of finding enough players here?

Premise/Backstory hooks: Each of you must be involved in the disappearance of a 31-year-old World War One veteran named Henry Mosser. Either you were friends with him, a detective or other investigator hired to find him, a reporter covering the missing persons case, or in some other way connected or invested in this man's disappearance.

The details known so far: Henry had been down on his luck after the war. He'd been unable to keep a steady job, because the war had changed his temperament. He was prone to outbursts, and had taken to drinking illegally to ease his pains. He had no formal address, but was known to stay at a homeless shelter most nights. He hasn't been seen for at least three days, however, and his close web of friends is exceedingly worried, especially considering that there have been a string of homeless disappearances over the last month. Henry would mark the fourth.

Great. Can hopefully get a few more, and get down to business within the week, ideally.

New to the RPG, but not new to the Mythos, and very much interested if you're willing to give new players a chance?

Yes, the mystery in centered around Mythos activity.

http://files.meetup.com/1402071/coc_quick_start_bw.pdf is a good jump point for creating a character. It should have all the basic info you'd need. I usually like sheets through Myth-Weavers.com. I also have a sample sheet here to use as an example.

Not a problem! Still looking for the ideal 4 before I start definitely.

What specifically are you going to need help with?

The "Creating an Investigator" section of http://files.meetup.com/1402071/coc_quick_start_bw.pdf has the rules for rolling up each attribute.

Choose 8 occupation skills that your character's occupation might use in their day-to-day lives in their job. Multiply your EDU by 15 to get your skill points. Spend these in the 8 occupational skills, with a maximum of 75 in any one skill.

Then take your INT and multiply it by 10 for your hobby skills. These skill points can be spent in any skill (except Cthulhu Mythos). Once again, no skill can start over 75.

Money will be mostly handwaved, but should be kept appropriate to your character's occupation or family background. Choose a few notable or valuable items you might have, and a reasonable sum of funds available to your character.

Other Info should just be notes that bring your character to life. Personality traits, quirks, habits, or previous experiences that may color your investigator's experiences.

EDU x 15 is for your 8 occupational skills. Skills you might use in your character's job.

INT x 10 is for all other skills.

You're spending all these points on increasing skills on a 1:1 basis.

As for items, you can just add any logical items that your character might carry. Flashlights, matchbooks, suitcases with fresh clothes, a small radio, etc.

If you feel the need to have a less abstract system, you can use https://the-call-of-cthulhu.obsidianpor ... /equipment to determine wealth and equipment, if you feel the bookkeeping would be more comfortable for you.

I'm interested in playing too.

The Quick Start rules and the rulebook have conflicting information for character creation. While the Quick Start rules only give 15 x EDU occupational skill points and limit starting skills to 75, the 6th edition rulebook gives 20 x EDU occupational skill points and has no limit on starting skils other than the human maximum of 99. Perhaps the Quick Start rules were written for an earlier edition.

When you're ready to start, I can create a forum for the game. I'll just need the name of the scenario and a short text blurb describing it, like you'll see for other games on the main page.

I do prefer the quickstart rules. Having a character start with 90+ in a skill always leads to very swingy moments.

The Wind in the Cage:
As the unblinking stars watch thoughtlessly from above, investigators follow the trail of a missing man through the wicked alleys of Arkham, uncovering a web of connections closing on a terrible secret. Something strange is on the New England breeze.

Will that do?

Great, thank you! I'm setting up subforums now.

Priest, Krow, and Bandages, if you have any other questions for character creation or other things, please post them in the relevant threads in The Wind in the Cage.
