Spawn of Azathoth

Post by Cearlan »

The late great Keith 'Doc' Herber wrote a great many things for this fantastic game we all love so much. One of his earlier campaigns was Spawn of Azathoth, and it tends to be overlooked in favour of other campaigns such as HotOE, MoN, Tatters and AtMoM which is a pity as it is, with a little work a decent campaign. I would like to run this long, globe spanning campaign on Play@YSDC if there is enough interest.

I have the 2005 reprint - CHA23101 and not the 1986 original unfortunately, which is currently going for £60-odd from the States, not an outlay I can reasonably justify when I have the later version (though it is boxed ... hmmm). ;)

Spawn of Azathoth is a moderate-length Call of Cthulhu campaign intended for four to six investigators. The suspicious death of a former teacher begins the adventure. Following clues, the player characters find themselves caught up in events of cosmic import. As such, most of the investigators should know or have had ties with Brown University, specifically with Dr. Phillip Baxter BSc (Archaeology).

The original campaign covered started at Providence before moving on as the party decides. I have added a couple of other locations to the campaign to make it more (un)balanced and interesting. The campaign starts on Monday 2nd May 1927.

Anyone interested please answer below with an idea of the type of investigator you would likely want to play and I'll pm you with investigator generation info etc,

Take Care,

I'm definitely interested! I was thinking of playing a colleague of Dr. Baxter's, an archaeology professor.

I too would love to be involved, as someone from the History department perhaps?

I will be happy to join in.
I can play a personal friend of Baxter and a local doctor in the community, specializing in medicine, first aid and psychology.

Mr. Handy I have tried a couple of times to send a pm to Welsh to set a sub forum up for this game, but it seems that ysdc is not too keen on my pm's. Below is what I had tried to send him about 20 minutes ago

Hi there Welsh,

I posted a thread seeing how much interest there was in my running SoA on P@YSDC and in the first 24 hours got positive responses.

I have Mr. Handy looking to be an archeology professor; Priest who wants to play someone from the history department; royya who claims a local doctor's position; Garrett a reformed crook; Howerd Phillips with student the son of an olive oil importer and Aitken who is getting back to me with his concept. So there is 6 already.

Could you please set up the relevant sub-forum for a classic era game - it is set in 1927 Providence, at least to start with. Further to this, I know Mr. Handy is part of the group so could get him to do this, but am not sure about due protocols over editing a forum you are playing in. Also, do I get semi admin rights over this sub forum so I can create more sub forums as needed or do I need to contact the admin team for this?

Thank you,

Norman / Cearlan

Welsh hasn't logged in for months and hasn't posted in much longer than that, but I can set up a forum for the game. I'll just need a text blurb to go with it like you'll see with other games on the index page. You can post it here. Then I'll create the forum, add you as Keeper, and make you moderator of the new forum.

No problem, it can wait until you have time. I'll be leaving for a convention on Thursday afternoon and won't be back until next Sunday night (and might not have time to post after that until next Monday night). I should still have time to create my character before I go.

Spawn of Azathoth is a classic era Call of Cthulhu campaign intended for four to six investigators. A macabre death begins the adventure and by following clues, the player characters find themselves caught up in events of cosmic import which sees them spanning the globe and fighting for their very lives, not to mention their sanity along the way.

Character Generation:

Standard rolls for characters, you can assign them as you see fit. (Str, Con, Pow, Dex and App = 3D6 ... Siz & Int 2D6+6 ... Edu 3D6+3 and so on) Remmember that you can make adjustments for the character's age - minimum = Edu + 6. For every 10 years over this add 1 point Edu. For every 10 years above 40 subtract 1 point from your choice of Str, Con, Dex or App.

You can use investigators from the Investigator's Companion Vol II if you so wish. They offer some nice angles not available from the viewpoint of the basic rule-set. I am using 6th Edition rules, though that should make little or no difference to the game in reality.

Nothing above 80% for professor types (in their specialised fields) and 70% for non-professorial investigators. Hobbies based skills can be used as you wish, apart from adding to Dodge ... you will need to have a valid reason to increase your dodge above Dex x 2.

With regard to money, I am not a bean counter, so will not be paying too close attention to this. I will assume that the Doctor and two professors will be roll D3 for either $6,500, $7,500 or $10,000. The student and crook will roll D3 for $3,500, $4,500 or $5,500 which I feel reflects their social status better than random die rolls.

Any other questions please post them below or PM me. Now that Mr Handy has the forum up and running I can start playing with things and get the game under-way, hopefully before the end of February, what with conventions etc. Thanks for setting this up so quickly Mr. H

Welcome, RulerMan! I've validated you, so now you can post in the game boards. Spawn of Azathoth has already started, but maybe the Keeper can find a way to bring you into it.

Registrations had been temporarily closed earlier this year due to a massive flood of spammers, but we've upgraded the board and are now having more success at keeping them out, so registration was reopened.

The Call of Cthulhu rules are a part of the Basic Roleplaying System. The current edition is 6th, and there's work being done on 7th, but 5th edition should be just fine. The rules are pretty similar between 5th and 6th from what I hear (and indeed, not all that different between 1st and 6th).
