Forbidden Journey: An Adventure in China

Post by Tabs »

"Goodbye. Goodbye and good luck."

"Au revoir, mes amis."

The train track turns and runs through low hills, the locomotive disappears, all that can be seen are puffs of steam; aboard it are Peter Fleming, Special Correspondent to The Times, and Ella Maillart, Swiss adventuress, they are at the beginning of a secretive--to the Chinese authorities, anyway--travel adventure. Their goal is British India.
Against spectacular odds, the unlikely pair won through to Kashmir. Here is the first page from Fleming's "News from Tartary."

And a map of their route.

The station platform empties, the well wishers retire to the restaurant for drinks.

The farewell party at the station is where this adventure begins; in fact, it is where recruitment through roleplay begins. No-one is making a commitment to a game at first, it is a party, only, and you choose--at the party--whether to continue or not. The above page gives the atmosphere of the 1930s and China which I hope to create, but all is not to be too authentic, the Mythos will rear its detestable head at some stage.

If you are interested, post a photograph, nothing else, of your character; he/she can be anyone, the only requirement is a reason why they are in Peking in 1935. Any questions? Send me a PM.

N.B. Photographs are to be black and white/sepia/monotone; a colour image must be suitably edited.

(regards, Syrinx)

The photo is of Davidson Black, noted palaeontologist who worked in Peking till his death of heart failure in 1934. He worked on the dig sites, most notably Zhoukoudian, (Dragon Bone Hill), largely being funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, whilst working for the Peking Union Medical College. With the unrest caused by the rise of the National Revolutionary Army, most foreign scientists left the country, though Black and his family stayed behind.

I might suggest that the photo could be a palaeontologist / archaeologist who worked under Black and continued his work following his mentor's demise.

I know you asked for nothing else but the photo and reason, but I thought the background might be beneficial to explain why he would be in Peking in 1935.

I'm almost ready to start the game--probably Monday. Can Syrinx or Mr. Handy set-up a game for me?
