Devil in the Dark -- modern day scenario

Basically, I'm checking to see if there's interest in a quasi-modern day scenario. It's set in 1982 Afghanistan, with the players taking on the roles of spetznaz.

I've run the scenario at tourney's on a couple of occasions, and it usually takes about 2 -3 hours to complete face to face. So, online that would equate to what? Sixteen to eighteen months? Just kidding.

Anyways, pre-gens would be provided. But, to add a slight twist, everybody would be forced to pick based on name and specialization only. Each character has a full background and agenda. If I let all the players see the agenda of each of the investigators, there'd be no fun!

Given the time and place, there will be some action, but in past playings, the investigation won out over the action. There are seven pre-gens to choose from.

Let me know if there's any interest.

=============Devil in the Dark===================

Sometimes, things are better left alone. But when desperate men are backed into a corner, they will search for whatever they can use to save themselves. At the height of Soviet power in Afghanistan, the mujaheddin are getting pushed back at every turn. Hoping to turn the tide, the guerilla fighters turn away from the modern weapons supplied by foreign powers and reach for something much more primal. Last night; it worked.

I'm interested in playing. I like the concept, and since I don't have that much free time the length sounds about right too.

Yeah, if its a short scenario, I'm totally in! The only problem is, I'm away for all of January, so if it starts before Feb 2007, I'll have to bail.. :( Unless it started soon and ended/I died before I leave on vacation...

signing up

OK. So we have 5 or 6. Now, we need to pick a starting date.

I think it would be best to wait until after the holidays, otherwise we'll end up taking a break in the middle while everybody does their holiday thing.

What are people's thoughts on when to begin?

I'm out unless it starts after Jan 29th (I'm going backpacking for a month!) But that's ok, no hard feelings, you'll have enough players anyways.

CJ-

Considering Coffee Demon's issue you might want to include some pre-gens (perhaps with Coffee Demon's help) to help round out your cast of characters. This way if Coffee Demon wants to join you later, he can after merely reading up on the character and past story.

I have had multiple players handling different campaigns on the Lure and generally its worked out fine. We also use pre-gens on Zombie Apocalypse which involves a rather high turn-over rate of characters.

That said, do you have any suggestions for character type and design? If they are playing Spetznez troopers do you want them to follow character models as set by Delta Green or in the Character guidebooks of CoC?

Also, do you plan on establishing a maximum point allowance- like perhaps 110 points to be distributed as the player wishes in their primary stats?

Welsh,

Thanks for the advice.

Pre-gens are being provided. Given the uniqueness of time and place, as well as some of the necessities of plot (this was born of a tournament scenario), pre-gens are highly recommended. There are enough that everybody who signed up so far can have one, including coffeedemon. So, if he's not able to join until Feb, there'll be a character for him.

When I built the pre-gens originally, I used the layout from DG Countdown, and then added points until the appropriate mix was found.

Here are the pre-gens by name and 'occupation'

Dmitri Mialkovsky - counter intelligence - emphasis on languages --taken
Piotr Bekbulatovitch - counter intelligence - emphasis on espionage --taken
Vasili Chernov - demolitions -- taken
Gregori Kozlov - medic -- taken
Sergai Ivanovich - pilot -- taken
Yevgeny Balinkov - rifle - taken
Mikhail Federov - pointman/scout -taken
Abram Nikoleivich - sniper -- taken
Zacharii Smitrovich - pilot

When you pick the one you want, let me know and I'll email you the sheet. Since character backgrounds are going to play a role, I don't just want to post the characters sheets and have everyone see everyone else's backgrounds. That'll ruin the fun...

Once you have the character sheet in your possession, distribute 50 more skill points as you see fit.

Edit - added more choices and marked one as taken.

We're going to be ramping up next week, so if you haven't picked your characters, please do so. If you want to join in, but haven't already expressed interest, let me know.

I'd love to join too, the concept sounds way cool! 8)

Given the choice I'll play either Vasili or Abram.
