Bloomsbury, near Bernard's flat
Saturday, March 11th, 1893 - Around midnight
Bernard was slowly making his way down the street towards his flat. The walk had been long and the weather unusually cold, but it felt good -in and odd sort of way - to stretch his legs. He was returning from the Humberts' residence, good folks who just a wee bit shallow for Bernard's tastes. Clients were clients however, and the Humberts were having a party and wanted spook and delight their guests. To them that meant a foray into the supernatural and to the mysteries of the world!
Ordinarily Bernard would simply put on a show of things for the entertainment of the wealthy patrons he had, unless they truly seemed ready and willing to believe and deal with the spiritual with the gravity it required, but tonight had felt different. Tonight Bernard had conducted a true seance, during which he had been able to summon the cute and usually chipper Annabelle - the spirit of a little girl who had died years earlier and often served as Bernard's guide in answering questions about the beyond. Tonight however, she was not happy. Annabelle seemed almost depressed, she refused to answer any questions and would only tell Bernard that something dark had happened in London tonight and it was going to take him away.
Bernard had to quickly come up with little lies and vague answers to his clients' and their guests' questions, as Annabelle left shortly afterwards, though the wealthy had no means of knowing that he was simply putting on a show. When he was dismissed the Humberts offered him a carriage to take him home, but Bernard decided to walk.
As he approached his flat, Bernard noticed a dark shape squatting on a stoop leading to his door, as he got closer it sounded like it was murmuring.
