IC-Ep 1: A Spirit In The Night (Bernard Mottram)

Post by CrackheadC. »

Bloomsbury, near Bernard's flat
Saturday, March 11th, 1893 - Around midnight

Bernard was slowly making his way down the street towards his flat. The walk had been long and the weather unusually cold, but it felt good -in and odd sort of way - to stretch his legs. He was returning from the Humberts' residence, good folks who just a wee bit shallow for Bernard's tastes. Clients were clients however, and the Humberts were having a party and wanted spook and delight their guests. To them that meant a foray into the supernatural and to the mysteries of the world!

Ordinarily Bernard would simply put on a show of things for the entertainment of the wealthy patrons he had, unless they truly seemed ready and willing to believe and deal with the spiritual with the gravity it required, but tonight had felt different. Tonight Bernard had conducted a true seance, during which he had been able to summon the cute and usually chipper Annabelle - the spirit of a little girl who had died years earlier and often served as Bernard's guide in answering questions about the beyond. Tonight however, she was not happy. Annabelle seemed almost depressed, she refused to answer any questions and would only tell Bernard that something dark had happened in London tonight and it was going to take him away.

Bernard had to quickly come up with little lies and vague answers to his clients' and their guests' questions, as Annabelle left shortly afterwards, though the wealthy had no means of knowing that he was simply putting on a show. When he was dismissed the Humberts offered him a carriage to take him home, but Bernard decided to walk.

As he approached his flat, Bernard noticed a dark shape squatting on a stoop leading to his door, as he got closer it sounded like it was murmuring.

Bernard's head was spinning and he needed to walk to clear it. Annabelle was consistent, she was always cheerful, every time they spoke. Bernard had a theory that the mood, the tempermant, a person had in the time leading to their death would shape the spirit they'd become. He'd thought it imposible for Annabelle to be other than she was and that the world was otherwise to his theory was both exciting and disconcerting, having been a baseline assumption for so long.

Her behaviour and its implication almost, so very nearly, distracted him from her ominous proclamations of something dark on the loose in London. There was always something happening in London of course, but that anyone or anything would involve him and his quiet little life was preposterous. But the notion niggled and wormed and ate at him. Annabelle didn't lie. But Annabelle didn't get sad either. What did it all mean.

These were the thoughts going through his head as he walks up to his porch pulling out his keys and watch to check the time, a habitual checking of the street before walking the few steps to the front door

It wasn't until Bernard was jingling with his keys at the door before he realized the shape that was squatting on his stoop was a little orphan boy. He had heard that street urchins were often used as messengers, but he had never personally received a message from one.

"Mr. Mottram? I have a message for you from a Julius Smith, he said it was urgent." The urchin shuffled through a small stack of slips of paper before jutting his hand out with one for Bernard. After taking it, the little boy ran off quickly, likely with many more messages to deliver.

Professor Smith was a guest at one of Bernard's previous seances, a very smart man just a few years younger than Bernard himself. After the seance, the two had a very interesting conversation on the occult and apparitions, while he hadn't seen much of the man since, Bernard would get the occasional news clipping from the Professor about out of place events and occurrences with potential supernatural explanations.

When Bernard reads the notes it says in a hurried scrawl:

AM AT 5 DURWARD STREET, WHITECHAPEL.
FOR GOD'S SAKE COME.
IT IS AS OUR TALKS.
JULIUS SMITH.

Bernard reads the message and checks the blade within his cane before turning around making his way towards Whitechapel.
