Alex takes a shot at the ambusher who exposed himself to shoot at Tyner.

His aim is true and the ambusher drops.

Craig peeks out from behind cover, aiming the barrel of the rifle around and looking for any attackers left that he can shoot, or failing that to try again to lay down covering fire if any of his comrades are still out in the open.

OOC:   Mr. Handy Go ahead and roll alertness and if you make that you can roll to hit or lay down covering fire whichever you prefer. Providing covering fire gives you a plus 20% to your firearms check.

Not very confident is his shooting ability, Craig just fires a burst to try to make the enemy keep their heads down.

Craig fires a burst at the ambushers shooting at Tyner. They duck behind cover leaving Tyner free to do what he needs to.

Tyner tries again to get at the wounded man. He has better luck this time.

Dr. Tyner manages to pull the wounded Bryant into cover. His wounds are very bad and even with the most sophisticated of medical treatments in a stable environment (neither of which Tyner has access to) he might not make it.

OOC:   Tyner: You can either try to stabilize Bryant by rolling your first aid skill at half (40%) and I will make a luck roll for him, try to ease his pain, or do nothing (neither of these last two require a roll).

The wounded man's situation looks grim. This is one of those horrible times when triage is needed. There must be other injured soldiers, some of whom might be saved through quick action. Tyner decides to minimize the man's suffering as much as possible for now, then try to locate other casualties.

All of a sudden you can hear whistling over the din of combat and then an unnerving silence as the ambushers cease shooting at you. It seems that as quickly as the ambush began it has ended. The attack has left several dead and wounded. One Cougar has been flipped over and the other is a flaming wreck.


Anyone not adapted to violence can make a SAN roll for being on the receiving end of an ambush.

Tyner has seen enough violence to keep his nerve, although it's never easy. He continues to perform triage on the wounded, saving lives when he can, easing pain when he can't.

Craig feels sick to his stomach. The situation reminds him of the Taliban raid on the prison where the CIA was interrogating captives, only this time he has come closer to death himself. That time, he never even saw the attackers and just sheltered in place until it was over. Here, he'd been right in the middle of it - and it isn't over yet. They are stranded out here in hostile territory, and the killers are still out there. The whole experience has left him shaken.

Craig lose 4 points of sanity.


Besides yourselves (Craig, Tyner, and Alex) only six others survived the ambush. Booker is kneeling beside the dying Bryant. Rahimi is still crouched behind cover and is obviously traumatized. Gibson is scanning for more hostiles but looks visibly shaken. The other three soldiers are all from the other Cougar. They are: SPC Jones, PFC Garcia, and PFC Scott. Garcia and Scott are mostly unscathed, but, while Tyner has managed to stabilize Jones, he will not be able to walk on his own. One Cougar is completely destroyed and the other is not drivable because it is on its side. In addition, there are several dead ambushers who have been left behind by their retreating comrades.

You all know that the smart thing to do would be to flee back to the safety of FOB Turner. However, you also know that Delta Green would want you to push on until you either save Ellis or confirm that he is dead.

"Now we know what happened to the other bunch that went out to look for Ellis," says Craig, still feeling nauseous. "We have to keep looking for him, but we can use the radio in the Cougar on its side to contact FOB Turner and report what happened. Maybe they can send a chopper for the wounded. I just hope those Taliban don't have shoulder-fired missiles or anything."

OOC,That takes me to 76 Sanity. My Breaking Point is 68, but that presumes my starting Sanity of 85. When I took the -5 Sanity at the outset to lower it to 80, should my Breaking Point have been recalculated (to 64)?

"Good idea," Tyner says. He tries to speak to the surviving soldiers as if he were a commanding officer, in the hope that it will help them overcome the shock of battle. He addresses the two uninjured PFC's. "One of you men get on the radio and report to base, get some evac for the injured. The other keep Jones as comfortable as possible until help gets here." If helps gets here, he muses.

He walks over to Craig. "That was a hell of a thing to go through. Looks like Rahimi is pretty shaken up. Maybe you should talk to him in his own language, see if you can calm him down." And maybe that will get your mind over what you've seen.

[Mr. Handy]

Craig nods and goes over to Rahimi. "I'm sorry I got you into the mess," he says to him in Dari. "I'm just as shaken as you are, but we have to pull ourselves together if we're going to get through this. We can't stay here long."

Tyner:

Shortly after you give the men orders Scott approaches you. He hesitates looking like he isn't sure if he should salute or not, but then starts explaining the situation to you. "Sir, the Cougar's radios must have been damaged when it hit the IED. I'm getting nothing but static."

Craig:

Rahimi's face is pale and he's swaying so much you're worried he might collapse. His voice comes out in a hoarse whisper as he replies to you in Dari. "I warned you that this place was cursed, as did the others. Nothing good comes from challenging curses! We should head back now!
As this is happening, Booker comes up to you two. He has tears in his eyes and he asks, "What did he say?"

OOC:   Yes your breaking point would be 64. That's my bad for not catching it.

[Mr. Handy]

Craig puts an arm around Rahimi to support him. "He said he and the others warned us this place was cursed," says Craig, translating automatically, ", that nothing good comes from challenging curses, and that we should head back now."

"This is no time for heroics," Tyner says. "There are injured to care for. Without transportation or communications, there's no choice but to head back. Even that will be a huge challenge. We'll have to come up with some kind of travois for Jones. We've got to get back to the village."

Craig nods. "You're right," says Craig, "but before we go, maybe someone here can fix the radio in the Cougar. A chopper would be much better than hoofing it."
