Masks of Nyarlathotep - Chapter 2

Post by Laraqua »

Raiko has kindly allowed me to take over his fantastic Masks of Nyarlathotep campaign that so far has lovely props, easy to read clue lists, and a bunch of richly drawn characters who have spent many a post interacting with each other on a deep and meaningful level. While I've put out the call out to the old players there's still two characters that can be picked up. After rereading all of the posts in the past week I've find it a joy to read - and not just my own old posts - so while I'm currently looking for people to pick up existing characters it shouldn't be a chore to catch up. At present I'm still awaiting confirmations / denials from players so only two existing characters (both NPCs) are available:

I will post more character options if any of the other players tell me they can't return to the game.

My posting schedule will take a leaf from Mr. Handy's book. While generally I will simply keep up with your posts, I will want to keep to a weekly (at a minimum) schedule which means that unless everyone's on holiday or has agreed, I will put forward an update a week after the last post even if no one else has commented. I will also put forth a proper post at least once every 7 days (probably twice a week) even if I'm otherwise busy. If the situation isn't dire and everyone else's posts have ground to a halt this might be as simple as a "Time Passes so let's describe some scenery", or a sudden encounter that might propel folk forward, etc. If the situation is dire, such as in combat rounds, then everyone gets a chance to post during the 7 days following the round's start. If someone forgets to post then I'll post for them with the most likely (and safe) option I can think up though it might not always be the most ideal. Don't worry. Nobody gets a Red Shirt just because they didn't post after initiative starts.

Maksim Rukov: A moody ex-air force pilot and aristocrat forced to flee Soviet Russia. He's a socialist at heart whose trying to embrace progressive values but often comes across as quite awkward when he does so. He has a crush on Dr. Caroline whom he has persuaded into a faux marriage so that she can use the rings (and her apparent marital status) as a shield against certain individuals and to provide him with a cover if he needs to protect her room. Moody as all hell, but well-meaning and with an active conscience. He has a twin brother, Timour Rukov, and is the brainier and more socially skilled twin (when he's cheerful at least). Highly attractive. Get away driver. He's been there from the beginning so you'll need to read almost all of the threads. OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Yaleesha: An exotic dancer from a nightclub whose desperate for revenge against those who hurt her boyfriend who has only spoken to Nethaniel and Maksim Rukov. She got spotted in her attempts to advise Maksim and had to go off on the run with them and a hostage taken from the club. While not normally a player character, she's so well-placed that she might as well be and would require the reading of only 6 pages of posts which makes her ideal for somebody who doesn't want to read a lot. You could also make her character sheet though the attributes will be set by me / canon. OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Helen: A secretary at a particular cultist's location who didn't know anything about the cult's activities. Her fiance has gone missing and she's desperate to find them. She's seen a few of the other staff members behave in a truly insane and homicidal manner and has also seen Andrei and Timour kill them. While uncertain of the group's motivations she's so desperate to find her fiance that she'll go with them. This only requires reading about 12 pages of posts. OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Hi Laraqua,

I'm considering this. The only thing holding me back is my terrible track record for joining games. Whenever I join a game, it shuts down within a month or so... :o

I've also been enjoying my readings of the new MoN Companion that YSDC published. I'd have to stop that. *sigh* Decisions, decisions.

I can guarantee you the rest of Chapter 2 and all of Chapter 3 as well. I won't guarantee beyond that as it'd take a year to get through Chapter 3 and one can never tell what's beyond that, but I am direly hoping to complete it because I really adore this campaign and how it's gone so far. It'd be painful to simply end it without an ending. I've already read the companion, the campaign book, several play-by-posts, including ours, so I've no end to inspiration.

Up to you, though. If you'd like to perhaps just ride out Chapter 2 with one of the existing characters and then go from there?

No guarantees needed. I was just letting you know about the curse of Job. ;)

Wow! You must be a fast reader. The companion was just released a short time ago and is 500 pages! Phew!

Hmm. OK, Laraqua, I'll start browsing the threads and will let you know which NPC strikes my fancy.

A more up-to-date set of information on the various Pick Up Characters and an indication of much required reading is involved as well as further possibilities for characters you can build yourself (within certain parameters). This will be relaxed in Chapter 3 where there may be new opportunities to work your characters in. I have also included the other PCs, not because you can select them, but so you can have an idea of how they all interweave.

AMERICAN CHAPTER
Maksim Rukov: A moody ex-air force pilot and aristocrat forced to flee Soviet Russia. He's a socialist at heart whose trying to embrace progressive values but often comes across as quite awkward when he does so. He has a crush on Dr. Caroline. He has a twin brother and is the brainier and more socially skilled twin (when he's cheerful at least). Highly attractive. Get away driver. OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Timour Rukov: A ex-gunner with the air force, also ex-aristocrat, brother to Maksim who lives in the moment, enjoys his indulgences, and doesn't bother thinking too hard about things that don't concern him which does tend to make him the happier and more stable twin. He's also far more physically skilled of the two - especially when it comes to violence and tends to hope for more action-oriented pursuits - prefering car chases and violence to sitting around. He's highly attractive and he knows it, enjoying casual acquaintances which have the least few of repercussions. OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Andrei: Also an ex-aristocrat from Russian and erstwhile friend to Maksim and Timour Rukov - though he has a bit of Rukov envy and is quite suspicious of Timour, in particular, after his outrightly seductive behavior on the ship to London. He is socially awkward, introverted and prone to melancholy outbursts. He's also read a Mythos Tome which can't be healthy for his sanity. In truth he's pretty much a typical (though richly drawn) Lovecraftian protagonist - introverted, fearful, and yet drawn to the Mythos mysteries hinted at in various texts. OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Elizabeth: One of the New York bluebloods from a rich family who's always been excited about adventure. Despite being one of the women in the party she's also the natural leader - not through force of will but due to being a) the most motivated, b) having one of the most stable personalities, c) having most of the ideas and being willing to back them, and d) being the one who knew everybody in the group she brought together. OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Caroline: A New York doctor who owes her private practice to Elizabeth and who had to close it down (hopefully temporarily) to follow Elizabeth on her wild adventures. Anything for Elizabeth. She is sensible, pragmatic, but not a killjoy. Currently she's posing as Maksim's wife in order to allow him certain privileges that may be necessary later on (like to stay in her hotel room propped up against the wall with a gun in his hand) - as well as to avoid the unpleasantness of being an unattached woman in certain countries. She keeps a level head in all situations. Holds high standards for herself. Suspicious of Andrei's mental state. NOT OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Johnny: Introverted but without a lot of the baggage that the other introverts in this party possess. Tends to keep a low profile. Walks with a limp and uses a cane. Rarely speaks but when he does it's cool, calm and factual. Hesitates to refer to anything supernatural and prefers to talk in terms of known facts. Chinese American. He possesses a quiet dignity. Stealthy and skillful and tends to survive solo missions due to his skillset (and lucky dice rolls). NOT OPEN FOR SELECTION.

LONDON CHAPTER

Gwen: This skillful librarian from the British Museum has been kidnapped by the cult and is earmarked for sacrifice but perhaps a cunning player might either be able to get her free from their clutches or simply roleplay through her terrors until she is either saved or killed. She got involved in all of this when her assistant was killed by cultists. She has been kidnapped by the cultists.

Nethaniel: A bookshop owner of the 'Dodgy Pages' who was drawn into this by Andrei Rukov and has met everybody by this point and has been brought up to speed. He's even seen some of the supernatural situations. He's currently trying to get in touch with Elizabeth who is being escorted by police officers. He is a cockney speaking fellow who tends to brush off terrible encounters with a British jokey manner. NOT OPEN FOR SELECTION.

This only requires reading about 8 pages. OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Paul McClean: No reading required. This is Helen's boyfriend who has been earmarked for cultist sacrifice.

Inspector Barrington: He has been investigating the Egyptian Murders in London. NOT OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Sergeant Jones: He has been investigating the Egyptian Murders in London and is currently responsible for keeping Elizabeth and Johnny safe and secure - hopefully also gaining their confidence so he can make a major break in the investigation. NOT OPEN FOR SELECTION.

Other Possibilities Include: Irish Criminals. Rural Constable. Village Farmer / Fisherman etc. whose lost a loved one.

I'd recommend either Yaleesha (exotic dancer - requires you to make her character sheet based on canonical attributes), Helen (librarian and fan of Egyptology - has her own character sheet though you could create one if you liked) or an Irish criminal type you can make yourself. The Yaleesha and Helen roles require a little pre-reading but not a lot. I can either send you the links for the two ladies or put all the relevant posts into one word document and send it your way. Or you could play the criminal type.

Helen and Yaleesha's posting rate could be as slow as you liked (even weekly) at this stage though that may change when Decrepit returns. If you play Helen, you get to peruse mystic artefacts right away! If you play Yaleesha, you'll get some information on the cult right away.

The criminal type would need to post at least once every 2 - 3 days as there's another player in that thread and that's his posting rate.

I think I'd prefer the Irish criminal type. I'm going out of town for the weekend, but I'll be back Monday and can get started then.

Its been awhile. If you want to roll him up that is fine, or I can do it. Posting 2-3 times a week should be no problem.

I need to catch up on some reading to figure out where we are at.

Thanks so much.

Hi Laraqua,

I'm leaning towards playing Timour Rukov, but I do have a lot of reading left to do. I'm currently making my way through the London chapter to catch up to the action, and then I'll backtrack to read through the NYC threads.

OPEN CHARACTERS
Bear in mind that some of these characters can have a significant reduction in back-reading to begin with depending upon the situation.

Largely. The other place had built in robes and cupboards so we need more of both to fit in here.
