The Terror Out of Time: Classic Doctor Who meets Classic CoC

Post by Mr. Handy »

Our game has been running for a couple of months now and is well into the second episode. One of our players, who plays companion Lucius Verres, a "finder" (the ancient equivalent of a private eye) from the Repulic era of the ancient Roman Empire, has not posted in a few weeks. He has recently joined the TARDIS crew, and his first trip has taken him to London in 1930. Currently, he and his companions, along with a couple of locals from 1930, are trying to figure out a way to get back both Story the Time Lord and an ancient dagger from a tribe of ghouls. If you're interested in playing Lucius, please let me know by posting here. This part will require some catching up, but hopefully not too much.

Hey Handy... still looking? I'm tired of joining these rinky-dink games that go on for a month and then die. I know you're in it for the long haul, bud. If you got room, I'd like to jump in. Say... how does a man from the Roman Empire go about talking to all these local 1930's London blokes anyway? Don't think English was big on the tongues back then. Ya'll using babelfish?

Not exactly. Those who travel in the TARDIS have a mental bond with it that enables them to understand all languages as if they were their own, a gimmick that's frequently used in Doctor Who.

Unfortunately, I've already found a replacement player for Lucius. Houngan has taken him over. However, you're free to create your own character from 1930 and I can squeeze you in. This game's almost halfway done, I think. The second adventure in the series, called The Ninth Planet, should start early next year.

No worries ... I don't have my book, and can't really justify installing Byakee on my work computer... so I'll just have to sit it out. Keep me in mind if someone else bails on ya. :)

I splurged last night and bought the 6th edition pdf... still don't want to cause you more trouble since you've already got a full compliment. I know your plate's overflowing. But hey, let me know when you get to a good point to add a character in any of your games.

You can set up a character without reading the rulebook. I just used the free Quick Start rules for reference when sorting mine out. And even that was unecessary. Mr Handy explained what rolls were needed, for what stats, and what to work out after then. See here.

It's no trouble squeezing you in if you want to play. I'm already about to add one new player mid-game, so it won't be much more difficult to add another at the same time. You could always jump in on Space Oddity or add one or more characters in Zombie Apocalypse as well if you like.

That's a kind offer. And I'm going to decline on Zombie Apocolypse for sure. I got one in there, and I think that's good for now. I just need something a little more cerebral... but I can wait for the opportune moment.

Thing is, all the games on here that I join seem to teeter off to nothingness. Especially Nocturnum. I've attempted to play that three times now, and it died within a month every time.

I also don't like seeing games fade away and get abandoned, which is one reason I make such an effort to stick with them. Maybe The Ninth Planet will be what you're looking for.

Yes, it's the second Doctor Who/Call of Cthulhu adventure I have planned that I mentioned above, which I intend to run after The Terror Out of Time concludes. It's set in the future and science-fiction themed with a Mythosy twist, reminiscent of a number of classic Doctor Who stories. One of those stories is called The Tenth Planet, hence the name.

Rumor has it, your replacement player for Lucius Verres has slipped out of the booth and gotten lost along the way. So if there's room for me, I'll start catching myself up pronto.

The rumor is true, and I'm the one who started it. :D

Welcome to The Terror Out of Time! To catch up on Lucius Verres's story so far, you should read the following threads in Episode 1 in the listed order: Introduction (he's not in it, but it sets the stage for the adventure), Inside the Spaceship, Blast from the Past, All Together Now, and Horror Down Below.

Then, in Episode 2, you'll need to read the following threads: Underworld, Are You My Mummy?, Reunited, Best Laid Plans, The Lion's Den, and The Exchange.

I'm about to wrap Episode 2 up, so you'll want to start posting in the new Episode 3 thread for existing players when it appears.

Thanks! I guess it is addictive. You don't have to read it all in one sitting. One of the benefits of play-by-post is that it allows you to set a slower pace. If you think the Terror Out of Time is long, you probably haven't read the first two chapters of Zombie Apocalypse yet. This is actually quite small for one of my games.

I read it ... but long or short, don't matter. I read like a snail. Gonna start posting now, breathe a little life back into Lucius.
