Born in 1886 an only child with a silver spoon firmly in his mouth, he seemed destined for the life of the dilettante. His childhood was happy and pampered. He was educated at Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford, where he received a First in English.
His destiny changed when he elected to serve in the British Army from 1914-1918 attaining the rank of Capitan in the 1/4 Battalion, Essex Brigade, East Anglian Division (later 161st Brigade, 54th Division).
While overseas in 1915 he received word that his parents were lost aboard the RMS Lusitania.
After serving at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli, Egypt and Palistine he returned home briefly to settle his affairs. At this time he was approached by MI6 to keep an informal eye on the increasingly volatile situation in Cairo . Feeling at a bit of a loose end, and unwilling to remain at his family home, he sold his family estate and returned to British occupied Egypt, buying a home there. His knowledge of languages combined with his military and civilian contacts have allowed him to become a successful private inquiry agent.
