Hi Snapper, welcome to the board.

If you fancy something a bit out of the ordinary, Muppet Cthulhu has just started and has spaces.

Phil.

Thanks for the offer but I might start with something a bit more regular CoC. Appreciate the offer though.

Welcome, Snapper! I've validated you, so now you can post on the game boards. You'd be welcome to join my games, though they're not exactly regular CoC either. Zombie Apocalypse is non-Mythos survival horror. The Horror in the Blackout is part of my Doctor Who/Call of Cthulhu campaign, set in London in September 1940. That's closer to regular CoC, though three of the investigators are a Time Lord and his two companions. The others are all local to 1940. The game has also already been in progress for some time, so you'd have to read a lot to catch up on the story so far.

Hello Snapper and welcome! As a current player, I'd like to second Mr Handy's Zombie Apocalypse Reanimated. True it's not strictly CoC but only because it's not Mythos based. Otherwise the rules are mostly the same. It's less about investigation and more about survival (or not) and is fun and action-packed.

Wow, lots of good choices.

My experience is entirely "regular" roleplaying. While I'm getting the hang of this I might just stick to one game perhaps.

I've been watching Dr Who since Jon Pertwee so I'd rather like to join the Blackout game if I can?

You sure can! I've been a Doctor Who fan since Tom Baker, though I've since seen all of the episodes that still exist (and seen reconstructions/animations and read the scripts of those that don't). The best thing would be for you to take over an abandoned character. There are several of those. The most pressing need I have is for someone to play Brook Davies, one of the Time Lord's companions originally from 2010, but she's been in the campaign from the beginning, and you'd ideally want to read the first four adventures as well as catch up on this one to get a feel for how to play her. The easiest character for you to take would be psychoanalyst Anna Jerkins. There are other characters who were abandoned a while ago that I'd have to reintroduce into the story if you want to play them: Reverend Archie Pennyfeather, criminal Seamus O'Leary, and RAF pilot John Barrow. There is also Tinker, who is a very unusual character who might be difficult to play (and who has also appeared in a previous adventure). You can see the character sheets in this thread. Alternatively, you could create your own character. I could introduce an air raid warden or a police constable easily enough pretty soon. Either type of character can be either male or female in this era.

Hi Mr Handy,

The fact I can remember the Pertwee episodes is really a testament to the Australian ABC's dedication to playing DW reruns when I was a kid, and my advanced decrepitude!

If you don't mind, I'd rather play a peripheral character while I see how this all works - so I might avoid Brook. I'm a fan of The Detectorists starring Toby Jones, and he cameo-ed in DW a few years back, which all seems auspicious as his photo is being used for the Rev Pennyfeather. On the strength of that, I'd like to be the Reverend if I can, thanks.

Is there a summary anywhere of what's happened so far? Otherwise, I'll just read anything that refers to the Reverend.

Sure, you can play Reverend Pennyfeather. There's no summary, but you can read everything he's done so far. He was written out of the story some time ago, but I can reintroduce him. I'll just assume he's been with the main group the whole time but hasn't said or done anything of note since I wrote him out at the end of The Gathering.

I'll list the threads you need to read to catch up here. Keep in mind that you may only read the In Character threads in which your character was present, with the exception of Introduction. At the end of each thread will be a hyperlink directing you to the next thread. The threads are:

Episode 1: Introduction->The Shelter->Rain of Death->Into the Storm
Episode 2: Prisoners of Time->The Long Night->Escort Duty->In Hospital->Comparing Notes->The Dead Girl->Autopsy->Staying Behind->The Vault->Tea Time->The Gathering->House of Secrets->Breaking and Entering?
Episode 3: On the Third Day->Madhouse(I'll assume you went with this group)->Convergence->Deeper Mysteries->Waiting->Madness at Night

When you finish reading all of that, you may post in Madness at Night whenever you're ready. Feel free to post in the Out of Character chat thread (The Zero Room). Welcome aboard, and have fun!

After the adventure concludes, probably sometime next year, there will be a short break before the next one, in which you may create your own character. If Archie survives this adventure, there's the possibility of him becoming a companion and joining the TARDIS crew for the next adventure, though nobody has actually joined as a companion in the entire campaign yet. We started with three companions, but one left at the end of the previous adventure (the player had abandoned him). Brook will most likely leave at the end of this adventure too if she survives, unless her player returns or she gets a new one.

Hi there, if you're interested I'm looking for a replacement player for my Eternal Lies campaign (https://www.callofcthulhu.org.uk/pbp/vi ... .php?f=352). It's Trail of Cthulhu rather than CoC, though. There is some stuff to read before you join in, as we have closed three chapters so far (still a lot more to go, though). In case you are interested in joining in, let me know.

Sorry to hijack Snapper's thread. I'm also interested in joining a game. Haven't played an RPG since - god - maybe AD&D 2E but I've maintained an interest and I've been enjoying listening to things like the How We Roll podcasts. The Eternal Lies campaign looks interesting although I'm not familiar with the Trail of Chthulhu system. If there's a space available what's the commitment?

Welcome, Mephistophilis! I've validated you, so now you can post on the game boards. I'm a player in Eternal Lies, and it's been moving slowly as of late. It doesn't take much time to participate, though it is a very long campaign and will be quite some time before it concludes, especially if the current pace continues.

You'd also be welcome to join my games.

Thanks Mr Handy, your Dr Who campaign sounds interesting - more of a Colin Baker/Sylvester McCoy era me - is that based on the Call of Chthulhu ruleset? What's the time commitment? I see you have an alienist waiting to go.

You're welcome. Yes, my campaign uses the 6th edition Call of Cthulhu rules, as well as the Cthulhu Mythos. Every adventure in my campaign is designed to be reminiscent of a different era/style of classic Doctor Who. The first one, The Terror Out of Time, was modeled after a traditional Tom Baker story, borrowing the most from The Pyramids of Mars. The Ninth Planet is similar to Troughton (and late Hartnell) "base under siege" stories, particularly The Tenth Planet and other stories involving the Cybermen. The Shadow Over Dunwich is based on Pertwee-era UNIT adventures. The Brotherhood of Death is like Hartnell (and early Troughton) historical stories, most notably The Romans. The current story, The Horror in the Blackout, is modeled on the McCoy era, particularly The Curse of Fenric, the only classic story to take place during World War Two.

The time commitment isn't too bad. As long as you can post at least two or three times per week, you'll do fine, and the posts don't need to be very long. Dr. Anna Jerkins is an alienist, and she's available for you take over if you'd like.

You're welcome! Welcome aboard, and have fun! She didn't arrive until early in Episode 2. There is some discontinuity from when the character was abandoned. Once you've caught up on the reading, you can join in on her current thread (Madness at Night) whenever you're ready.

Episode 2: Shelter from the Storm->The Long Night->The Morning After->Family Ties->House Call->The Plot Thickens->Haunted by the Past->The Vault->Tea Time->The Gathering->House of Secrets->Breaking and Entering?

Hi Mephistophilis, currently we're on an average of one post per week, but I hope to speed things up in the future, probably in the range of two/three posts per week. Hopefully, as soon as I get some new players in - we're currently down to two very active players, with two more playing but with less frequency. In any case, let me know if you're interested, I'll give you more details.

Hi overlord87, yes, I'm definitely interested. Bit unfamiliar with the ruleset but I'm sure I'll catch up.
