OOC Chat

Ok, I've sent a pm to the players that need to finalize their investigator. I also need to determine definitely who is gonna play (carnage_lee and Quatermass are being very nice in passing the playing spot one another, probably even too much :D ). But anyway, we're almost ready. I'm thinking of starting the game by tomorrow if we can, or monday-tuesday at latest, if no one has objections :D

carnage_lee can have the spot. I am readying a new game so that should take up my time. I will be a reserve if someone else drops out though.

Tomorrow is good to me.

I have to say that at the weekends I'm usually a little absent from internet, being a dad. During working days I can be online a lot more cause I have a really relaxed schedule at work.

Ok guys, we're practically set. I just need a brief physical description or an image/picture of the investigator from carnage_lee, laitang and TheLibrarian. Then I'll put your characters in The Investigators topic.

I'll send each of you a private message today or in the next couple of days. It will give you the informations needed to write a little "prologue to the prologue" for your character, that you'll use to describe how your investigator received an invitation to a meeting and his/her thoughts/reactions/sensations/etc.. It could work also to introduce one or more of your sources of stability, if you like. Perhaps describe a brief scene from your investigator everyday life. Feel free to invent but keep it short (two-three paragraphs at most). Once you're done, send that back to me and I'll collect them all in a single topic. Then we'll start with the real prologue and all the characters together ;)

P.S. I'll add an [EL] tag to any PM I sent related to the campaign so you can identify them easily ;)

Use this conversation to define your investigator's style. There are obviously clues to be gathered here. A simple dialogue is sufficient, but you might also want to reinforce your investigator's approach by using interpersonal abilities.

For all of you that only have the quickstart rules, feel free to ask me clarifications on your investigative abilities. If you're in doubt, I can define to you exactly what you can or can't do with a particular ability.

If so perhaps it'd be worth looking at the notes on the letters?

If i am not wrong, none of you has the ability.

Luckily, you are in Boston and not some God-forgotten village in wild Africa. Therefore I will allow you to search for a specialist. It will require some spends, though.

A 2 point spend of Library Use or Oral History to locate a specialist available.

A 1 point spend in Credit Rating AND 1 point spend in Bureaucracy to get to meet said specialist in a couple of days max (that is, before your trip to Georgia).

Otherwise you will have to ask directly to Douglas Henslowe.

Discuss it in the IC topic and if you wish to proceed, tell me who performs the spends ;)

It's a good idea, and we may want to do it before we leave for Georgia. We have seven points of Library Use between us and five of Oral History, but Library Use is probably more generally useful. Whoever has three points in one of those should probably spend at least one of the points. Can we split the spends between different people?

Two of us have Credit Rating 3 and Bureaucracy 1. I actually have points to satisfy all of the spending requirements, but I think it's better to spread the spends around so we get more back when we refresh. My Bureaucracy point could also probably be put to better use in cutting through red tape with medical professionals, but I'd spend a point of Credit Rating if we can split it.

Re: OOC Chat - Prologue

by Overlord87
There are two separate spends here: one to locate the specialist (Library Use or Oral History), the other to get an appointment with him (Credit Rating + Bureaucracy). You can split the two different spends - one player can do the spend to find the specialist, another one the spend to get the appointment. You cannot split the points for the single spends (that is, you can't have one player produce the Credit Rating point and another produce the Bureaucracy point, or have one player put in a point of Library Use and another one point of Oral History).

If we're going to use Oral History to find the specialist (and I think we should. As Mr. Hardy said, Library Use is probably more useful) I can do the spend. Ian and Father Flanagan have postorints in Oral Hiy, but by the story point-of-view, it is just more plausible that Ian find a guy. If everybody agrees, I'll go with it IC.

Let's hold off on spending anything till after we go visiting Henslowe - I would think that having his name as a lead is the 'core clue' and any hidden meaning in the letters an additional clue - as we're (leaping ahead of myself) going to visit Henslowe we can ask him about the 'code/markings' - if that falls flat then we could look to get anything decoded.

For me, the points we ought to consider/investigate before heading off to Georgia
  • Who is Henslowe?
  • Henslowe mentions that he wrote everything down (re the event in 1924) - this sounds like something we really need to get hold of.
  • What happened and where in 1924 - if there were 'many death's' then it's possible that the event was reported in the papers.
  • Winston had medical help - his therapist might have info?
As a group we can look into some of those points before we fly off down south? It'd take our characters a couple of days to put their affairs in order - so would it be reasonable to take the next 2 days sorting things out and seeing what we can discover?

A lot of this can be done 'off camera'... perhaps Dr C and Father Flanagan check out the therapist, Prof C and Ian Morin check the newspaper records and Clarence Lanalor check out Henslowe?

Also... is this hanger now our base?

You have been given permission to use the hangar and its resources (books, maps, etc.) as you see fit. When you're ready to wrap things up in the hangar just tell me what you want to do next and I'll move things along ;)

Works for me. Ian could probably look at the newspaper archives for the deaths and also for Janet, Walter Winston and Douglas Henslowe, to see if anything comes up.

Other things:
- The Henslowe Flag Airport has anything to do with D. Henslowe? If yes, maybe the pilot know something?
- Someone with Library Use should probably take a look at the books here. It's unlikely that Janet put this room together just to receive the group. If it was already operational when Mr. Winston was an active occultist, maybe there's something to be found.

I wanted to clarify one thing, since perhaps it has led to some confusion (at least I think it tricked laitang). The letters are from Henslowe to Winston. The addresses at the top are in the wrong position unfortunately (I found these handouts already done and decided to use them since they were good, but I think the author made a little mistake with the format), so you might have mistaken who is the sender. Just wanted to specify it.

Hi,

I think we need a consensus:

I am all for doing the following:

Checking Newspapers for stories that could be the events of 1924.

See if we can get ant info from Winston's therapist

'Background' checks on Winston and Henslowe:

I'd divide this up as
Dr. C and Fr. Flanagan - see the therapist (together)

Prof. F and Morin - look into the events of 1924 at the newspaper morgue (together)

Lanalor - background checks (should be a cinch for a PI)

I would think that this would mean we meet back at the hanger the day after tomorrow (in game time) ...

BTW what day is it now?

I've prepared the topics for your investigations in Boston. I'll wait for laitang to post then decide how to handle his side of the investigation. I don't want to rush things, but this is a long campaign, so a minimum pace is required or otherwise we're doomed (which would be in theme with the setting, but I'd rather see this through to the end :D ).

If possibile click on Subscripe Topic (the option is at the bottom of the page) for the IC topics, so you'll be informed of new posts (I'm talking mostly to the players new to the forum and the play-by-forum). Try to make room in your schedule to check the game and partecipate at least three times per week. I hope I'm not being pushy but it's needed for the game to succeed, in my opinion.

I didn't plan on posting on the 25th anyway. This part is a bit slow cause the players are required to make some trivial choices (how do we move around? where do we stay?) that in a live session would require one minute, here a few days can pass as all players read and interact. I'll currently take carnage_lee's post as your plan of action, and unless there are alternative proposals I'll move things along on the 26th or 27th.

Merry Christmas everyone ;)

I like accents too. I was able to understand what the character was saying just fine. There was an attempt once in Shadows Over Scotland on this site to replicate Scottish accents, but that one hadn't turned out so well. I hadn't had a problem with it, though.

Yes, we're getting started... slowly at first, but we're getting started

I suggested this one: http://orokos.com/roll/

I searched online, I think you can use this as well: https://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm and copy/paste the roll.

I don't think any of you is gonna cheat, anyway, so in case just roll the D6 in real life and send me the result. I mean, going crazy is usually the funny part, right? :D

Orokos is my preferred choice because it keeps a log of player's rolls, in case we need to recheck something (you can insert the reason for each roll and it will store the result). If you can, use that. If you can't, don't worry, anything is fine.

One more thing if you use orokos: for any roll (only General abilities are rolled) in which you boost the test with points from your pool, remember to insert the number of points in the roll (like 1d6+1, 1d6+2, etc.) and specify the kind of roll you're making (at least the ability being used, Stability, Mechanical Repair, Firearms, etc.). In case we need to check something, we would have all the rolls and all the points spent.

Well, sometimes it happens in live sessions that players intervene with suggestions or advices when they're not present on scene, but I'd rather not allow it. Feel free to read and even comment on what's happening (like, here in the OCC thread), but I'd say no suggestions/advices.

For carnage_lee, laitang and leonardolad, when you're ready you can move to the "Reunion at Joy Grove" post (I thought you were ready so I opened the new one, but if you feel that you still need to "close" the other topic, feel free to do so). I'm loathe to split the party in online games, causes no end of issues. I know I suggested it previously but I think we covered that ok - if it's all the same to everyone I think we ought to 'suspend disbelief' and just go ahead with all the investigators in on the interview - keep everyone with something to do/contribute.

I know it's not 'realistic' to continue like this but for the 'sake of the game' I think we ought to.

I agree. We can give up on realism for gameplay's sake. Another option is for some of us to take Henslowe letter and go talk to his mother, assuming that Holly and Fr. Flanagan shared all they got from him in this quick encounter at the lobby. Still, I do prefer carnage_lee's idea.

Ian will take the lead in trying to physically remove the madman from Christopher, since he has the highest Scuffling rating. The others (including Christopher himself) can help. Each of you should send me a roll for the Scuffling ability (remember that you can use points from the Scuffling pool to boost the roll). If you don't have the Scuffling ability, just send me an unmodified roll.

That said, we have to wait for laitang, so there's no need to hurry. Perhaps we can move on until the end of the fight and stop there until he returns.

If you have something to write in the IC topic (like, a description of your character's actions), use the IC topic. Otherwise a PM is perfectly fine.

No need to roll since you're not participating in the fight. Preparing the sedative requires a few seconds, so you'll be ready in the next round. If the other investigators succeed in subduing the mad patient by then, you can inject him right away.

Ok, moving on, since laitang should be back.

First of all, I need laitang's Stability check.

Then, there's another round. Choice your actions and tell me. If the men manage to overpower the madman, Holly can inject the sedative. Otherwise, she might still try, but she'll need a Scuffling check since the brawl is still going on.

Just in time for me to go away tomorrow through Sunday!

I'll definitely try to inject him in the coming round, even if he isn't completely subdued. Rolling Scuffling unskilled isn't that bad. Most people can be hit on a 3, unless they're particularly elusive and require a 4. Of course, it doesn't look like anyone's managed it in the first round.

Ok, since this is the first conversation/interrogation with a character that is not fully willing to cooperate, remember that you have a series of interpersonal abilities to use: Flattery, Interrogation, Reassurance, Oral History, and so on.

It would be best if you specify that you're using a particular ability, but It's not mandatory. For example, if Clarence (who has Interrogation), asks a question to Job with a forceful tone, I'll assume he's using Interrogation and act accordingly. Just remember that different investigators have different abilities and you should try to cooperate as much as you can to make use of all of them.

Also, regarding Assess Honesty, I'll let you know automatically if someone is trying to bullshit you (check out the additional infos on the ability that I've provided in the thread Game Mechanics).

I'm assuming that in a situation like this all of you are trying to determine if Job is telling the truth or not, trying to cold read him. In Fontana's case, he actually used Assess Honesty earlier, so I expect he would keep his attention up for the whole conversation. Assume that anyone of you with Assess Honesty can get the "clue" I posted in the IC topic. I don't want to slow down the game by forcing you to explicitly tell me you're using the ability every other post, especially because you can use it an unlimited number of times.

In a more general situation, on normal conversations with NPCs that are not suspects, remember to specify that you're using the ability.

TheLibrarian hasn't logged in for more than two weeks. I've sent him a PM. Will wait for a couple of days, if he doesn't answer I'll handle Father Flanagan as a NPC until the end of the Savannah scene (that is close, fortunately), then we'll see.

Just put everything together in a single post: the new Sense Trouble roll (I stated the difficulty is 3, so once you roll you already know if you pass it or no), then your character's actions according to the Sense Trouble roll. If you make a run for the car, include an Athletics or Fleeing roll ;)

A couple of updates.

1) RhinoRat will be joining the game at the end of the Savannah Arc (which is basically right now) in place of TheLibrarian, who has completely disappeared. He will be playing a new character, not picking up TheLibrarian's one. Welcome RhinoRat ;)

2) We have finished the first part of the campaign. Judging from the time it took us, I've estimated that the whole thing will last about 3-4 years (unless you all die or go horribly mad earlier, of course). It's somewhat daunting, and frankly speaking even more than I had originally thought, but that's no big deal. It's a low-intensity activity, and I plan on bringing the campaign to conclusion. Now, obviously anything can happen in such a large amount of time, so it's hard for anyone to be 100% sure that they'll be able to play until the very end. So, what I am asking from you is this: if you have to leave the game, just let me know, and I'll handle it. Thank you :D

Thanks for the welcome! I am looking forward to joining the game, and I will try to get my character posted tonight. I am still new (I am currently playing in another game, and that is my first) so if I mistake any rules, or have any breeches of etiquette, please point them out to me. So, will be out on holiday for the next couple of weeks, but will still come and post every couple of days (hopefully). I've posted the new IC topic, it will be just an interlude before the next major arc.

Remember to send me the scene with your source of stability (RhinoRat can skip this if he wants, since he has no Stability to recover, but if he wants to, he's welcome to send it anyway), plus anything your character wants to do to prepare for Los Angeles during the 2-3 days you'll spend in Boston. Also, you have one point to spend on investigative abilities and two on general abilities.

Around the 20th I'll be back and will move things on to Los Angeles.

I'll also want to research Olivia Claredon while we're in Boston. I'd like to find out everything I can about her, specifically her bio, her real name (if that's her stage name), where she's from, how she got her start, her filmography, and her whereabouts before, during, and after August 1924.

Once again, welcome aboard :D

Just wanted to say that Eternal Lies is a very long campaign and I've estimated something like 3-4 years to complete everything. Obviously, many things may happen in such a long time, and as a matter of fact we have already changed two players. If anything happens along the way and you need to pull out, just let me know and I'll handle it.

Apart from that, you can check The Diary to catch up with what's going on (and/or give an eye to the IC topics). When in doubt with anything regarding the system, ask me or check the Game Mechanics topic.

That's all I think. Hope you have fun playing the game :)

I might have found a replacement player for Cameron, but in the meanwhile we lost Dave. This is getting tiresome, but I'm not giving up. For the time being, I'll handle Clarence as a NPC, and then probably remove him from the group. Then once we finish the LA part I'll see if someone else wants to join. That's it for now ;)

Just had a look at my skill-set and the closest skill I can find that I can see that would of any help with phone-tapping MIGHT be evidence collection. Would this work or not? Personally I think it's a bit of a stretch as electrical or mechanical repair would be the preferred choices.

To my knowledge, early telephone tapping just involved the insertion of wires at a certain point (the junction box?) in order to use headphones to listen to calls. But it might be difficult for the characters to monitor calls for a sustained period of time without being discovered.

Since he wasn't involved in any gunfight yet, I'll leave it to you.

I don't know much about gun laws in the US, so I made a quick search and found this: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... d=91942478

It seems like felons were prohibited from owning a gun only in the eighties, so I guess there should be no problem on that side. I'm not sure licenses are valid when moving from one state to another, but again, the game is set in the thirties, so I don't know. Let's simply rule that you can own a gun without troubles.

Mr. Handy, I would need a brief physical description for Holly, particularly hair and eye color (as the photo is in black and white). Thanks!

Holly is 5' 6" tall and weighs 130 pounds. She is pretty, with blonde hair and blue eyes. Currently she's wearing a black knee-length skirt and a white short-sleeved blouse.

The picture is of Ingrid Bergman in the 1945 movie Spellbound. Her character in that movie is one of the inspirations for Holly.

I'm having lots of fun with Ian, leonardolad  I got the idea back when you created your character, and wanted to go with Sudden Shock, then I had to wait for one year to get here, but it's working our very well :D

One thing, I sometimes tell you how your character feels during your flashbacks, because that's our of your control, but I don't want to interfere with your roleplaying, so if you feel that something should be different, or your character should react in a specific way, once you're out of the flashback, just go with it obviously. I'm also curious to see how you want to handle your character now ;)

I'm having a lot of fun too! I just have to figure it out how to balance good roleplaying and avoid being openly suicidal

Welcome :D Start up by reading here: viewtopic.php?f=352&t=5628
Then if you want you can move to the IC topic.

As we're currently closing up a chapter in Los Angeles, you can either choose to pick up Clarence, or create a new investigator. The choice is up to you.

Ok, then take a look at the character sheet. If you feel you want to move around a few points, it's ok by me (also, since it's the end of a chapter, you'll get a few points to spend anyway).

The points are fine, but I do have some questions.

Is there a way to change the image on Clarence's character sheet? It might seem off, but I prefer an image that is more in line with the time period.

I noticed that Clarence has "photography". Does this mean he has a camera?

Ok, I think there's no problem. I'll change the picture, for now you can use the new one.

Clarence can have a camera if you want. The ability means that he knows how to use one.

The investigators decided to check the land records, so you're back in LA right now. The group is currently deciding for the next move, which might be heading to New Mexico, following a few clues leading there, or doing some more investigation in LA.

So, everyone:
- you get 1 point to spend on your Investigative abilities (including selecting a new one, providing it makes sense for your investigator to have gained it)
- you get 2 points to spend on General abilities (again, you can select a new one)

Those of you that need it (namely, Holly and Ian) recover half their Stability lost during this scenario, rounded down. It could be a nice touch, if you want, to write a letter to a source of stability of your choice, reflecting your investigator's thoughts and feelings on this tiring investigation and the toll it's having on you.

Could one (or more) of us pick up a point in Languages and learn Spanish? If so, I'd like to do that, as I have several Interpersonal skills that would be more useful that way. Otherwise, I'd like to pick up Archaeology.

For my General abilities, I'd like to put the 2 points into Scuffling as I learn the basics of self-defense.

If it makes sense, I would like to have 1 point in Locksmith and 2 points in Weapons.

Here's the letter to my Source of Stability:

To Sophie O'Rourke:

Los Angeles, March ____, 1937.

Sophie,

I hope this letter finds you well. The last time we spoke you were still shaken by the Texas incident. I hope you feel better now. I know it is not an usual thing for me to write you, but I want you to know that I'm alright. I'm in L.A. right now, ready to go elsewhere. For now you just have to know that I am fine, and into something really big. Something dark lurks within our society. Something I came to believe goes way beyond corrupt politicians and violent mobsters. I will tell you everything when I get back to Boston.

Looking forward to meet you again,
Ian

Hi, I'll be taking over playing Cam. I hope that I can do him justice, I've really enjoyed reading HoneyDog's posts.

I've read the diary and all of the Mexico threads where Cam was present, plus a few little bits of earlier threads to fill in the details, but I've still got a lot to read through to know the stuff that Cam knows - so apologies if I get anything mixed up. :)

This game's a really great read by the way. :)

This game was my first introduction to Trail too.
Now I'm in two trail games - the other one being Matt Sanderson's group for the play-test of the upcoming campaign 'The Poison Tree'.

It's a very nice system and works extremely well in 'Cthuluhu' games - I think a lot of people (myself included) thought that Gumshoe games would spoil things handing out clues left right and centre - but that's not the case at all.

I've a couple of OOC questions.

1) Would you mind if Cam's drive was switched to Duty? I don't think he's been played as much of a follower (I've only read posts since HoneyDog took over), and I can understand him getting into trouble in the army easier if some others didn't share his sense of duty than if he had the follower drive.

2) Is there any chance you could fix some of the old missing handouts? None of the links in the diary work any more. :?

1) Yes, no problem.

2) I'll try to recover the original stuff, some of that I made on my own and I'm not sure if I still have it either materially or as a digital copy (actual years have passed in the meantime). If I don't, I'll put up the relevant information, at least.

Sorry I'd meant to post my jealous Savitree theory while we were at Leticia's apartment, but I was busy and the conversation moved on from the mutilated photos.

When I first read the unfinished letter, I didn't register that Brooks mentioned talking to Savitree as I wasn't familiar with the name until I looked up who SS could be after reading the next handout.

I really like this adventure, it's got a similar vibe to True Detective; and just like watching True Detective, I've not got a clue what's really going on. I'm expecting to lose more stability at La Paz for sure.

Thinking tactically at the moment - a violent approach (which never works well in this kind of game) puts us in probably a worse situation than when we put down our weapons in the first place. But unless we think Christopher will be back soon with the cavalry and it is worth stalling for time then we're going to have to face some nasty nectar and music and I don't know what the consequences of that will be for our longer term sanity. Any views on the direction of travel?

Re: OOC Chat

Posted: Sun Oct 06, 2019 1:36 am

I don't think fighting will work here. They have weapons and we don't. Our best bet probably is to stall for time and hope Christopher can come to the rescue. Unfortunately, I can't make a Bargain spend, as I'm at 0 Stability.

A shooting right now will be very bad for us. Also, have another Nectar addict in the group won't do us any good. In the other hand, I'm pretty low in Stability already (-3), so... not sure what to do. For now, probably take the sweet sweet Nectar. With Leticia's singing, I'm pretty sure I'm in for a treat. Christopher may appear with help if we stall for a little while. Also, Konovalov doesn't seems too loyal (I may be wrong), but I don't know if we would be able to convince him right now.

I think I'll change Cam's drive to Duty, makes more sense.

The only violent approach that is going to stand any chance of success is going to be taking Brooks hostage I think.

I can't take the nectar as I don't have Bargain.

I guess a nice Nectar party will stall for some time. What's likely to happen to Ian when he gets it? I thought there was a hint from Brooks his stuff might be more potent.

Hmm, that map doesn't look good with thugs behind us as well. Only Ian seems in range to get to Brooks and he's being held by two guards. Arse.

Currently only Jonathan has Explosives. I hope he shows up in a couple of days, otherwise I'll NPC him for the scene.

Mr. Handy, do you know what happened to carnage_lee? He totally disappeared.

I'm not sure where he is. He last logged on here in October, but I did notice that he made a post on Yog-Sothoth.com on Monday.

Merry Christmas everybody. Tomorrow I'll travel to Vietnam and be there until the 7th of January. I won't be posting until then. In the meantime, feel free to discuss how to deal with the large mouth - if at all.

Hi everybody, it's been a troubling couple of weeks here in Italy, and I haven't felt like posting anything. I'm taking a break from this play by forum, but I'd prefer to keep this section active in case I want to come back later on. Hopefully I'll be back in a few weeks. Anyway, stay safe everybody.

Trying times. Hope to see you back in a few weeks. Wave is hitting here soon so I may be preoccupied with work.

Thanks, you too. Take all the time you need. I'm self-quarantined right now, as I have symptoms, but if I have it it's a mild strain. This morning was the worst, but I think I've turned the corner.

Take your time, OL. And take it easy, Handy.

Here in Brazil the worst is yet to come, I guess, but me and the girls are staying home as much as we can.

Take care, everybody.
