Merida, Yucatan, Mexico
Early June, 1918

Image

A mule drawn trolley clatters past the open windows of the Restaurante Colonial on Federal Square. At a large table inside, dirty dishes are being picked up by a young black haired woman in a long white dress. The occupants of the table pause from their discussion as she does so. They are a small team of experts funded by the Carnegie Institute of Washington to survey archaeological sites in Mexico, the Yucatan to be precise. They have already spent several months surveying major cites including Chichen Itza and Uxmal. Now they are in Merida, Yucatan, resting up and researching their next move. The libraries and bookstores of Merida are often sources of information not widely available outside the Yucatan.

The team consists of archeologists; David Johnson, Anna Vesse Dahl, Percy Richmont, photographer Mitch Cooper, and guide Quinn Villavicencio. They liked to hang out here as the beers where cold, the food was good, and large ceiling fans keep the open air restaurant relatively cool in the hot Mexican summer. They were discussing Dr. Johnson's latest find, the crudely bound notes of a mid-nineteen century explorer named Donald Stillbridge. Johnson had found them in a box in a storage room at the Archaeology Library. The notes are on coarse paper with a string binding The front and back covers are each composed of two sheets of heavier paper that are glued together. The contents are written in hand and with black ink. Throughout Stillbridge employed short, incomplete sentences that efficiently convey information and ideas. Reading the notes you can tell that Stillbridge was well traveled. He visited most major Mayan sties and many minor ones. He is obviously well versied in native customs and culture and was fluent in English, Spanish, French, and Yucatec. Of the many sites mentioned in the book, one catches your interest.

The site is Xamanik and according to the notes and crude diagrams, is located in Quintanna Roo near the coast across from the stretch of water between the Yucatan shoreline and the island of Cozumel. Once a thriving town and later a religious site, the ruins are now a collection of overgrown mounds and tumbled stones. Near the center is a large, overgrown centoe that, not doubt, was the primary water supply for the community. Stillbridge also documented the presence of a large "caracol" or astronomical observatory. Long abandoned even before the Spanish came the site remains essentially undisturbed. Stillbridge reports stelae and monuments bearing crisp clear Mayan writing, scores of relics and artifacts and much more. Furthermore, he briefly interviewed Mayans living in the region and all said that they avoided the area because it was 'bad lands' and 'haunted". Stillbridge's time there was short. He spent only two day's there from July 8th and 9th, 1889.

Stillbridge never excavated there. He drew a rough map of the site and copied a few writings, but that was the extent of it. The journal goes on the describe a assortment of other sites and the ends abruptly and without explanation. The last date is September 10, 1889 at the town of Muna.

"It is said," comments Anna Vesse Dahl, "that the Mayans threw offerings, gold and suchlike, into cenotes. How I'd like to swim in its blue waters. We should go to Xaminik"--Anna looks from one to the other, Percy, Mitch and Quinn--"what do you think, Professor Johnson?"

"Absolutely!" says David Johnson, his excitement mounting. "We need to organize an expedition to Xaminik. We need to make all of the necessary preparations first, of course. As much as I want to see it, we can't go in unprepared. The site has been there all these years, so I doubt a small delay will hurt. The locals avoid it, so they shouldn't disturb it."

Anna looks over the notes and inspects the glued pieces of paper that make up the covers.
Anna,There does not appear to be anything in between the sheets and she cannot detect any writing on the glued inner sides of the papers. Though she would have to try to pry them apart to be sure.

"I believe you meant to say Miss Dahl, Mr. Cooper," says David. "Let's try to be respectful. I think we should start by doing some preliminary research on Mr. Stillbridge's 1889 expedition and find anything more we can about Xamanik. We'll need to visit Mani and find out if anyone remembers his visit there, though it was nearly thirty years ago. I hope we can discover where he went from there and anything he may have reported about the site. Ideally, I'd like to talk to the man himself, if he's still alive and we can locate him. Even if he's far away, we can always send a telegram."

Anna Dahl walks beside Mitch Cooper, heading for the post office in order to send two telegrams with an enquiry about Stillbridge: one to Prof. Johnson's Brown University and the other to Prof. Ackland of Boston University--where she studied for her degree.

"So you're our expedition photographer," she says, indicating the camera dangling from his neck, "do you wish to take snaps of me, Mr. Cooper?" She laughs. "Now, do I smile and look at the lens or do I pretend you're not there?"

Quinn, explorer

Image

Quinn makes his way through the tumult of the bazaar. Voices haggle around him, smells of cooking foods mix with human body odor, sunlight darts among overhanging tent flaps. Quinn keeps an eye out for pick pockets as urchins scramble underfoot. The explorer stops by several shops - tools and expeditionary equipment, travel books, maps and cartography, guides and escorts - checking if any may have worked with this Prof. Stillbridge. His travels then bring him to a mechanic and auto rental business that does brisk trade with foreigners. Perhaps Stillbridge used his services? Then onto a bar frequented by his profession, those who take their afternoon siestas through alcohol.

Merida

After writing a short telegram and sending it to both Prof. Johnson's Brown University and Prof. Ackland of Boston University. She leaves the Hotel that they are staying at as a return address. Then they travel down to busy La Dalator street. There the see several bookshops that specialize in archaeologic subjects. After several hours of searching the come to the shop belonging to a pump german named Detrick Messer.

"Donald Stillbridge. Oh yes I have heard of him. He working in the Yucatan about 20 years ago. Vait a minute. I think I has something written by him." Detrick rummages through a stack of periodicals. He pulls out a Archaeological Journal from 1885. There is a article about the contemporary Mayan people in it. "Do you vish to buy it?" the portly German says.

David and Percy
Merida

David and Percy arrive at the Library of Archaeology in Merida. It is quite extensive and John soon finds what he is looking for.

Donald Stillbridge studied at the University of Chicago. His passion was Mesoamerican culture particularly the Mayan. He was known as a renegade who derided intellectuals and went out on his own to see first hand what the Mayan people were about. While his methods were criticized at the time, his results rarely where. Though controversial, information Stillbridge made public about many heretofore unexplored sites turned out, often many years later, to be generally accurate. There is no mention of Stillbridge in any publications for almost 20 years.

Anna returns to the Restarante Colonial, orders a large coffee and whatever cake they sell, and finds a table. Before her is the periodical Archaeological Journal from 1885, which has an article on the Maya by Stillbridge, but apart from this find, she's had a fruitless day.
OOC:   The Ruins of Xaminik is a cenote surrounded by mounds? and Muna, the last entry in Stillbridge's journal, is situated far from Xaminik? (Muna is south of Merida, Xamink is north-East.)

OOC:   Muna itself is a medium sized city of about 2000 people. Of Archeaological note. It is a couple of miles north of the ruins of Uxmal. Uxmal is an ancient Maya city of the classical period. It is considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Maya culture, along with Palenque and Calakmul in Mexico. You team has visited this site at least three times.

"Just a moment, I have an idea," says Anna, but without telling what it is she hands her valise over to Quinto.
Children run and play in the street as a group of old men watch from the porch of a barber shop across the street.
She walks quickly--a little skip?--across the street, ruffling the hair of a playing child on her way to the barber shop.

"Hola, caballeros," she says in cheerful Spanish.

"1889?" The man muses. "That was a long time ago." He looks over at the other men sitting there. "Does anyone remember a Senor Stillbridge?"

He turns back to Anna as the others confer among themselves. "There are many Mayan ruins in this area so there have been lots of men coming to poke around them."

One of the men with shaggy white hair and a milky left eye says to the others. "Do you remember that tall Americano who came into town and got real sick? I think Doctor Alcalá took care of him." He shakes his head as if trying to rattle the memory into place. "I don't remember what happen to him."

Other men chime in some saying they remember the man and others that did not. Those that remember are mixed on what they know. Some say he got better and two or three say that the man got worse and died.

Your group finds easy travel and good roads for the first three days of your trip. The sky is clear and sunny with a hot wind blowing from the southwest. You pass through the cities of Tixcocob, Izamall, and finally reach Valladoldid at the end of the third day. Valladolid is a popular base for visiting nearby major Mayan ruins such as Chichen Itza and Ek' Balam, as well as Cenote Ik Kilso.

Valladolid is a great city to spend the day exploring the history and culture the Yucatan peninsula has to offer. From colonial era churches and architecture to natural wonders like cenote notable sights to visit in Valladolid are the colonial era cathedral Ex-convent and church Convent of San Bernardino de Siena named after saint Bernardino of siena in whom was built by Franciscan missionaries between 1552 and 1560. Located in the Sisal neighbourhood and a short 10 minute walk from downtown it also has a wonderful park where you can sit and enjoy tranquility and peacefulness. In downtown Valladolid, you can find the cathedral of San Gervacio located in the main square of the city. Valladolid has a chessboard-like street grid and at the city center it’s a plaza with a park square in the middle surrounded by stores where you can enjoy a walk and purchase souvenirs, food or refreshments. Located a couple of blocks from the heart of the city is the Cenote Zaci, a landscaped freshwater cenote or underground sinkhole in which you can access the inside and explore its cave.

From here you will be heading into more rugged backlands of the Yucatan. Your figure it will take about three more days to reach where you think Xamanik is at.

It is easy to book a hotel, livery the mules and horses, and visit the cenote.

Image

Located in the heart of Valladolid, you find the semi-open cenote. It has a diameter of 150 feet and is 260 feet deep. Vines hang down from the cliff like walls of the cenote. Several people are swimming in the refreshing turquoise waters. You know that there is a rare species of eyeless black fish known as "lub" the lives the the waters of the cenote. A connecting cenote is covered with stalactites and stalagmites and there is a walkway around the entire cenote. It is a cool relief from the hot sun and quite beauiful.

Anna pops back to their hotel. Within 20 minutes she returns to Cenote Zaci in her bathing suit--she had packed it in anticipation of the cenote at Xaminik, anyway she enjoys water and is a good swimmer.

Once in the cenote she takes note of the other bathers, who else is in the pool?

There are several other swimmers in the pool, mainly children and teenagers though there is a middle aged couple enjoying the waters as well.

Hernando and Juan Carlos have followed Anna from the Hotel after seeing her unusal attire. A large grin comes over Hernando and the large man jumps into the cenote fully clothed and begins to play with the children in the pool . He laughs and seems to having a great time. His brother Juan Carlos pulls out a thin cigarette and lights up. A look of fondness comes over his face as he watches his brother swim.

Though tempted, Quinto does not go swimming. Since that time he was attacked by an alligator in the swamp, he has been reluctant to go in water. The explorer lights a cigarette and watches the others. He thinks about the upcoming expedititon and runs through the checklist of equipment in his head.

The journey is uneventful though it takes your group four days instead of the three you though it would take to reach the area where you think Xaminik is.

You travel through the scrub jungle of the eastern Yucatan. It is hot though the trees provide some shade from the sun.

As you travel along a dirt path though the jungle you come upon two men and a boy leading some skinny cattle. The men wear wide brimmed hats and have machetes tucked into their rope belts.

Anna, her movements slow, her joints stiff, climbs down off the pony and stretches manfully. She plays with Flossy's ears, the sheep bleating, possibly, with pleasure, though no doubt oblivious to its destiny in the stew pot.

Anna squats, pulls out a small trowel from her belt, and desultorily chips at the earth and stones between some tree roots.

David strokes his chin in thought. "That is a possibility, Miss Dahl, though unlikely as you said," he says. "Many ancient cultures throughout the world worshipped a 'Mother Goddess' figure, though she goes by many different names. In fact, the early Catholic Church confabulated the Virgin Mary with this goddess figure to make their religion more appealing to pagans. I've long suspected that there was ancient transatlantic contact between the Mayans and their ancestors and other cultures, particularly the Phoenicians, so they mey have gotten the idea from them. It is worth investigating."

Mitch checks his watch. "It's not even noon yet. We might as well go. They might know where Xaminik is?"

Everyone agrees and you arrive at the village while the sun is high in the sky.

The village has about two dozen huts with several large pens with goats and chickens. As you walk into the village people stare at you and children begin to follow you with wide eyes and shy smiles. The men who brought you lead you to a large hut and a small group of men meet you there.

"Hello little friends," says Quinto in Spanish to the urchins following them. "You have a lovely village."

He kneels down to be at their eye level and takes out a 50 centavo coin. "Have any of you heard about Xaminik? Can you tell me where it is?" He hands the coin to the boy who looks most responsible, in Quinto's subjective opinion. "There is more if you get true answers."

Quinto walks along with the rest of the party to the village center to meet with who he assumes to be the village elders or leaders.

The women serve you bowls of a spicy pork stew which is quite good. For the next hour the men tell stories about ghosts, demons, missing animals, lost children, noises, and other strange things connected with the area around the site. Though none of the men here has experienced anything themselves. These stories are tales told by their uncles, fathers, and grandfathers. It seems that the place has had a bad reputation for generations and none from the village has dared visit it in many years. This really interests David as the site other than Stillbridge's short visit might be truely undisturbed and undocumented.

Your group beings to set up camp. Hernado and Juan Carlos unpack the mules. One of the mules becomes quite agitated and starts kicking and braying. The supplies on it's back slide off and are scattered on the group. It takes a minute or two but Juan calms the animal as Hernado picks up the supplies and equipment. Soon the animals are cared for and feed. Old Pedro and his nephew build a campfire and everyone else unpacks and raised the tents. Quinto looks for a nearby source of water but finds none. He remembers seeing a small cenote about a hour walking distance away that had water.

With a few hours of daylight left, John and Anna do a quick look over of the area. There are a dozen or more crumbling foundations and low walls like the one you first saw scattered around the area. Among these are several stone stelae. A large cenote is centrally located in the area. The bottom appears to be completely dry and crowded with brush and several small scraggly trees.

I wonder if they left because it dried up, or if something else happened to them."

You excitedly examine the stelae which you all agree to be genuine and Mayan in origin. Most likey it was carved during the fourteenth or fifteenth centuries, not too long before the arrival of Europeans in the New World. The stelae demonstrates high quality craftmanship.

The side of the stelae that faces skyward shows a image of a human sacrifice where the heart is removed and the body skinned. The skin is donned by a shaman who dances among the people who share the remainder of the corpse in a cannibalistic frenzy. Percy notices a glyph that denotes summer on this side.

On the side to the right of upward face, it shows a traditional sacrifice where the heart is cut out and shared among the priests who consume it as part of a offering to the gods. Percy finds the rune for spring on this side.

On the side to the left of the upward face, the scene depicts another heart removal but this time the heart is burned within a urn and the ashes are distributed among the people. Percy identifies the run for autumn on this side.

Anna and David know that while there was human sacrifice in the Mayan culture it was rare. The sacrifices made by the Mayan were mostly blood letting and of material objects such as jade and gold. This is a great find.

It seems we were indeed lucky with this find. And about all those sacrifices, maybe they were trying to get water from the gods?

"The Maya offered the occasional human sacrifice," says David, "but this sort of thing is very unusual for them. They must have been desperate to resort to repeated sacrifice and cannibalism. If there was a severe drought, that could explain it, but we really have no evidence of that yet. In any case, this is an amazing find! Mr. Cooper, make sure you take plenty of photographs."

Looking at the stelae, you figure it weighs at least a couple of tons. You could try and stand it back up right but that would require some ropes, pulleys, and the use of the horses. Turning it over on it's side would be easier but would still require some work.

"It would be a lot easier to move it onto its side than to raise it upright again," says David. "We'd just have to get enough photographs of the side that will be facing the ground before we rotate it. I'd like to stand it up once more, but it would take a lot of work, and we'd need help from the horses as well as ropes and pulleys. Even then, the stela may be too heavy."

Mitch busily takes several photographs of the stelae as you prepare to turn it over. Juan and Herando lend a hand as you push it over. Anna is convinced that without Hernando you might not have gotten it moved without requiring the horses.

There is dirt on the exposed side and David and Anna expertly clean it's surface. Quinn excitedly points to the heroglpyh that represents winter. This side shows a scene of sacrifice that involves throwing bound people and objects including weapons, scepters, idols, tools, and jewelry into a cenote. Around the cenote is a group of praying shamans.

You all know that in 1904 at Chichén Itzá, Edward Herbert Thompson dredged the cenote there. Thompson recovered thousands of artifacts, including beautiful objects of gold, jade, pottery, as well as the skeletons of dozens of people.

"Yes, that should definitely be our next stop," says David. "They must have been desperate to offer so many sacrifices, obviously trying to appease the gods at all costs. Later that night after a fine meal of roasted lamb everyone settles down to bed. David, Quinn, and Mitch share a tent, Anna has one tent to her self, Juan and Herando sleep in the open next to the fire, and Old Pedro and Jose sleep under a lean-to that they had constructed during the day. The night comes live with the sounds of insects, birds, and other animals. Everyone is tired from the day's activities and sleep comes easily.
David,The sounds of chanting fills David's ears as he lies on his back looking into a star filled sky. Strong hands hold his arms and legs down. David is confused where is he? What is happening. Turning his head you see a circle of dark skinned men in Mayan costume rich with Gold, jade and bright feathers. One of the men raises his arms to the sky, a black bladed knife in his hand. He calls to the gods to bless his people. He then stands next to David and the knife stabs deep into his chest. David feels the pain and sees the man cut out his heart and hold it still beating his his hand.
Anna,You stand with a large group of people. The are dark skinned and dressed in primitive clothing. Everyone's attention is riveted on a raise stone slab. A group of magnificently clothed Mayan men stand around in a circle intent on something. Anna sees knives in the hands of the men, rising and descending, wet with blood. The crowd is chanting and laughing, the noise rises as the men in the circle turn to the crowd. The men begin to throw hand sized pieces of bloody flesh to the crowd who rush up and begin to eat the offered raw meat. Anna catches a severed hand. The blood is still warm as you bite into the hand.
Quinn,You are running. Fast as you can in a dense jungle. It is dark and a full moon's light filters through the trees. Fear wells up inside you as you run. You know that they are behind you and gaining ground. Animalistic shrieks sound from behind you. They are so close now. Quinn rushes into a clearing filled with people. Naked men and women with arms raised to the sky. Dark black blood flows from vacant eye slots. Quinn looks up and sees a great dark shape eclipse the moon and stars. It leans down reaching for Quinn.
Percy,You look down on the young man laying on the stone stab. His eyes are bright and his mouth emits a faint moan. Two men hold him down. They look at you with expectant glances. You see the stone knife in your hand. It's feels heavy and it feels right in your hands. You place it's point over the man's heart. For a second you hold it there and then you stab it deep into the man's chest. Quickly you saw open his chest and cut out his heart. It beats in your hand. Hot blood dripping from it. You rise it to the sky with a cry of triumph.
David, Quinn, Anna, Mitch, and Percy awaken with a ragged cries.

You set up a block and tackle and David is lowered into the cenote. The walls of the cenote are sheer and are honeycombed with crevices and small caves. David drops nearly eighty feet before he enters the thick weeds, trees, and brush that covers the cenote floor. The vegetation is quite high and David disappears into it.
David,The vegetation is about 10 to 15 feet tall as you reach the bottom of the cenote. You can move around but a machete would help. You also notice a strong pungent fecal smell down there. Make a Intelligence roll.

You all enter the cave with flashlights probing the darkness within. The pungent fecal smell of bat guano assails your sense of smell. Mitch begins to retch and then throws up his breakfast. "Gads that smells terrible." he says between gags. Everyone else barely holds on from joining him.

The cave goes back about 30 feet and the floor is bare save for the last half of the cave which is covered in a pool of water. Small pale fish swim in the pool which looks to be only a couple feet deep at it's deepest. At the back of the cave two more openings can be seen. One is about 12 in diameter and the other is only about 3 or 4 feet wide. They are about 10 feet apart.

Quinn crawls through the opening and disappears though you can see light from his flashlight.
Quinn,Quinn makes his way on his hands and knees through the cramped tunnel. The foul smell gets stronger and after going about 30 feet, Quinn sees that it opens up into a large cavern. Quinn scans his flashlight around to see that the floor is covered in guano. There seems to be several flagstones set in the floor and what looks like a stone alter in the middle of room. The alter is also covered in bat guano. You light barely reaches to the over side of the room but the outline of another opening can be see there. Quinn hears something move above and he scans the light up to the celling. What he sees shocks him. About two score giant white vampire bats hang there. They are the size of a calf. Some make fitful movements but they appear to be asleep.

At David's urging, the party goes through the larger passageway. It's floor is covered in bat guano and the smell gets stronger as you advance. After about 30 feet it opens into a large cavern. The floors looks like it has been worked on by human hands. Flag stones have been places to level the floor. In the middle of the room sits a stone alter. The alter is about 3 foot high and 7 foot long and it is covered in guano. Just in the reach of your lights you can dimly see another opening across the cavern just opposite of where you are. You also hear a noise above you. Turning you lights upward you see the ceiling of the cave. It is crowded with nearly two score giant white bats. As Quinn said they are the size of a calf. They move and twitter in their sleep. Quinn thinks that they look like vampire bats.

"That sounds risky to me," whispers David. "If we do that, the bats will wake up and may turn aggressive. I think we should let sleeping bats lie. Mitch could start taking photographs of this chamber if he could do it quietly. The flash won't wake them up, but the camera might make noise. Bats are completely blind, and they navigate by sound."

Bat Cave

David and Anna examine the alter and carefully begin to clear some of the guano from it's surface. Anna notices something near the base of the alter and she bends over to examine it. A lump of bat guano looks out of place some how and she wipes it clean to reveal a decorative urn. Anna gets David's attention. He places a small rock hammer on the alter and turns to look. David's elbow brushes the hammer and it falls to the floor with a clamor. One or two the bats above twitter a bit louder and shift their hold on the celling. After a few seconds, the bats calm down and return to their slumber.

Percy looks around the cave and sees something on one of the walls. On closer inspection it appears that the walls had been covered in frescos but are now just faded patches.

Mitch continues to work on his camera. He grumbles under his breath about the lighting.

Outside in the Cenote
Qunito,You got outside into the Cenote and go over to the rope. You call up to Juan and Hernado to pull you up. You hear Juan call back. "Yes Senor, are you ready?" Getting a good hold on the rope you call back. "Yes" and they begin to pull you up. About 15 feet up the rope stops and then slips back down about 5 feet in a jerk and then it completely gives way and you fall the remaining ten feet on to your back. Stunned you hear yelling from up above and then a scream. A body pitches over the edge and you see Juan waving his arms and legs in mid air as he falls. Seconds later he lands with a crash into the brush a dozen feet away.

Everyone in the cave can recognize the bat like being as Camazotz.

Mayan Bat God Camazotz was portrayed as a flying bat and was the god of darkness, violence, and sacrifice. He inhabited the Mayan's version of "Hell", Xibalba. The Popol Vuh is a story of two twins, the "Mayan Hero Twins", whose father is killed in a "ball game" against Lords of the Underworld, getting vengeance on these lords, which just so happens to include Camazotz. The twins, Hanahpu and Xbalanque, were waiting in the "House of Bats" in the Xibalba, hiding in their blowguns waiting for the sun to rise so they could escape. Camazotz's name literally means Death Bat. In ancient Mayan mythology, which is mostly preserved in the Popol Vuh, heroes would encounter camazotz, which are bat-like monsters who presumably worked for the god. Hanahpu made the tragic mistake of poking his head out of the blowgun, and it was ripped off by the god Camazotz, and he took it to the gods of the underworld's "ball court" so they could use the head for the next "game". Hanahpu's brother, Xbalanque, then calls upon every animal in the forest to bring him their favorite food. One of the animals brings a squash and Xbalanque uses it to carve a new head for his brother. Eventually they move on through the Underworld and find and defeat Camazotz, and other lords of the Underworld, banishing him from creation.

The figure steps closer to the edge of the cenote. Anna can see through her binoculars that it is Hernando. He is looking into the cenote. Anna notices that he has a rifle in his hands.

"Yes," replies Anna, the emotion she puts into that small word expresses her absolute relief after the vilest stress. She double checks with the others: "Shall I call to Hernando?"

Anna's yell attracts Hernado's attention. He waves and calls back. "Senoirs and Senorita!" He then holds the rifle up in the air to make sure you can see it. "If you try and climb out I will have to shoot you!" He then aims the rifle at you and fires a shot. It hit's several feet above your group. He then backs away from the lip of cenote and disappears.

"Damn," Quinto curses.

"Sorry," he adds, forgetting Anna is there.

"Why is Hernado doing this?" the explorer wonders aloud. "Well eventually he'll have to sleep. We could try going up then. Otherwise we're sitting ducks climbing the rope up."

"Is he the only one doing this?" asks David. "If there's anyone else up there with him, they could take shifts on watch. We could wait until night to climb up. He may sleep then, and even if he's awake it would be hard for him to see us. The problem is that the bats will come out when it gets dark. We'll have to move to the other side of the cenote. Hernarndo's the one who said he didn't have a dream like the rest of us last night. Maybe he was lying. Maybe he did have one, and it got to him, drove him mad. He'd have to be mad to kill his own brother."

There is a thing that is strange. If he wanted to kill us, he didn't need to tell us, he just had to wait that we appeared and shoot when we were climbing. So, why shoot to the air? But you are right, we need to get out of here quick.

"I don't relish the thought of sleeping here," says David. "I think a better option would be to climb up after it gets dark, when Hernando is either asleep or at least less likely to see us. Still, we may find something of interest by continuing to explore down here in the meantime, while it's still light."

OOC:   You did a quick search around the outer edge of the cenote and found the cave. You haven't found anything as big as the bat cave. Mostly small crevices and cracks. Nothing that you could crawl into.

Mitch has some superficial bites and scratches. Nothing that requires first aid.

Quinto thinks it over.

"Since we're trapped here for now, the cave seems worth checking again. If we wait until dark the bats will likely exit for hunting. It'd be safer to go in then."

"I wouldn't wait until dark," says David. "Those bats will be awake then, and when they come out hunting, they'll find us. Those gunshots may have disturbed them, but once they've gone back to sleep it should be safe enough in there as long as we don't make noise and alert them again."

You carefully search the cenote. You cannot tell if you are being observed from above but there is not reaction from Hernando as you look around.

David is first to notice something at the center of the cenote floor. Under a canopy of vegetation which shields it from observation above is a large Stelae. It is about 10 feet tall.

The Stelae has many carving of the giant bats. Some are attacking people and while other carvings show priests conducting human and animal sacrifices to them. The dominate carving is that of Camazotz which is on each side near the top.
Anna,As Anna is cleaning and examining the stelae, she feels a intense itching on the palm of her hand that is resting on the stelae.

"I think I'd have a better chance of convincing him I was Quetzlcoatl," says David. "It worked for Cortes, at least. My guess is that sacrificial victims were put in the cenote to be eaten by the bats, and that'll be us if we don't escape by nightfall. Let's get some pictures of the stelae - in case we get out alive."

"How odd," says David, peering at the stelae but taking care not to touch it. "This stone must have small, sharp protrusions sticking out of it, and it must be porous to absorb the blood like that. Perhaps the Mayans tied their sacrifices to the stelae."

Quinto, explorer

"Swell," snaps Quinto looking around the cave. "Guns above and bats below. This is last time I don't carry my pistol. Assuming get out of this pickle."

Concerned about the giant bats, the Spanish-American explorer steps back out. He lights a cigarette and wonders what set off Hernando. He decides there's no harm in asking. Quinto kneels down behind cover of vegetation and stelae so he can't be shot, then yells loudly in Spanish: "Hernado! Hernando buddy! What happened? Why are you keeping us down here? What do you know that we don't? I have 200 Americano dollars here for you. Let's talk!"

We might be able to get away with it if we can leave gaps that are wide enough for air to pass through but wide enough for the bats to get at us.
