Hiram Bingham discovered Machu Picchu in 1911, but he was only the head of a team of archaeologists. One of these was Anna Vesse Dahl, daughter of Norwegian immigrants to the States, an avid Girl Scout, and hard working graduate of Boston University. It was Anna, gently washing some Incan potsherds, who struck up a conversation with a local policeman, and together with a boy they led Bingham to the lost city.
When the Carnegie Institute advertised their expedition to Yucatan she bombarded them with letters, stating her qualifications and her fervent wish to join. "Oh, hvor spennende!"--tr. "Oh, how exciting!"
