Character Creation

Post by Raiko »

This thread is to thrash out your characters for the game.

I know that DrPeterson is away until the 29th, so we won't be beginning the game until at least a day or two after that.

The adventure will begin with a short prologue chapter set on 24th June 1924, the day before your friend Jackson Elias departs New York to research his next book.

You will all be present, as will Jackson friend and publisher Jonah Kensington and Jonah's wife Elizabeth.

Mr Handy's investigator Amy already has a link to Jackson in her back story. It is important that you are all either friends of Jackson and/or Jonah, or that you have a very close relationship to another investigator who is a friend of the pair.

Perhaps you are another author of the fantastic, published by Jonah, or perhaps an expert on the paranormal, consulted by Jackson. Maybe you are a private detective or explorer who helped Jackson in the past. Or even a besotted friend of Amy, jealous of her infatuation of Elias.

Whatever the reason, you must have good cause to be invited to have a farewell coffee and chat the day before Jackson leaves.

The prologue will need to be railroaded, and so I don't want to spend more than a week role-playing it when we begin play. However much your character may wish to travel with Jackson, it will not be possible. Either Jackson will refuse or if you regularly help the author, then perhaps you will have plans of your own this time.

When next we meet these NPCs they will be changed men. It will now be January 1925, and excitement is building in New York for a total eclipse of the sun at the end of the month, but Jackson has uncovered more than he bargained for, and the fate of the world hangs in the balance....

Jackson Elias - June 1924
Jackson Elias - June 1924
Jackson Elias is 37, of medium height and build, and dark-complexioned. He has a feisty, friendly air about him and, as an orphan in Stratford, Connecticut, he learned to make his own way early in life. He has no living relatives, and no permanent address.

When staying in New York, Jackson often stays at The Hotel Chelsea on West 23rd Street, and you spent many a pleasant evening drinking coffee with him at his favorite coffee room just across the street from the hotel.

You like him, and value his friendship, even though months and or sometimes even years separate one meeting from the next. The world is better for having Jackson Elias in it.

His writings characterize and analyze death cults. His best-known book is Sons of Death, exposing modern-day Thuggees in India and abroad. He speaks several languages fluently and is constantly traveling. He is social, and enjoys an occasional drink.

He smokes a pipe. Elias is tough, stable, and punctual, unafraid of brawls or officials. He is mostly self-educated. His well-researched works always seem to
reflect first-hand experience. He is secretive and never discusses a project until he has a final draft in hand.

All of his books illustrate how cults manipulate the fears of their followers. A skeptic, Elias has never found proof of supernatural powers, magic, or dark gods. Insanity and feelings of inadequacy characterize death cultists, feelings for which they compensate by slaughtering innocents to make themselves feel powerful
or chosen. Cults draw the weak-minded, though cult leaders are usually clever and manipulative. When fear of a cult stops, the cult vanishes.
jackson_elias.jpg
The Works of Jackson Elias

Skulls Along the River (1910) - exposes headhunter cult in Amazon basin.

Masters of the Black Arts (1912) - surveys supposed sorcerous cults throughout history.

The Way of Terror (1913) - analyzes systematization of fear through cult organization; warmly reviewed by George Sorel.

The Smoking Heart (1915) - first half discusses historical Mayan death cults. Second half
instances present-day Central American death cults.

Sons of Death (1918) - modern-day Thuggees; Elias infiltrated the cult and wrote a book about it.

Witch Cults of England (1920) - summarizes covens in nine English counties; interviews practicing English witches; Rebecca West thought some of the material trivial and overworked.

The Black Power (1921) - expands upon The Way of Terror; includes interviews with several anonymous cult leaders.

All of these books are published by Prospero Press of New York City, and all were edited by owner/editor Jonah Kensington.
The Keeper wrote:What You Know About Your Friend, Jonah Kensington

Tall, slim, grey haired and bearded, Jonah Kensington looks at least five years older than his actual 48 years.

Jonah owns and is chief editor for Prospero House, a publisher of books having occult or fantastic themes, fiction and non-fiction alike.

The offices of Prospero House are located on Lexington Avenue near 35th Street. This modest
concern does not aim for best-sellers, but rather for books which deserve to be published because they will interest select readers for generations to come.

Kensington is a good friend of Jackson Elias, as well as the editor of all of Elias’ books, and knows you well. The atmosphere at Prespero House friendly and informal, Jonah is always ready to spend an hour or two chatting about the fantastic subject matter of Prospero's books while smoking his pipe. His wife Elizabeth also is his only helper and she is always ready to make a coffee for visitors.

I'm thinking a classic private detective, one that maybe helped Jackson when he was writing his book Sons of Death.

I'll just make this a work-in-progress post so that others can see it and you can approve/reject. I'll roll everything on Orokos.

Rolls,

Appearance & Personality: James is a big guy with a number of scars and a weathered look. He keeps in decent shape, but has been hitting the bottle more than the gym lately. Personality-wise James is an affable guy, easy to get along with and generally a rock when things get tough.

Background: James Marko grew up poor in Brooklyn. He left school early to start working on the docks to help support his family. There he did a little bare-knuckle boxing to earn an extra buck or two. James saw a lot of crime on the docks, but that wasn't his bag - he wanted to help make things better and not worse. He was on the force only three years before he left and became a PI. He couldn't stand the bribes and kickbacks - he wanted to get paid to do his job, not paid to look the other way. He enjoyed his PI work well enough, even had a strange case once in a while. Like when his good friend Jackson Elias came to him looking for help investigating a death cult for a book. James thought it was a little hokey, but a paying job is a paying job so he happily helped Jackson investigate. The results were disturbingly more real than expected.

An arhcaelogist could also have a connection to Amy. While she's not a full-fledged archaelogist herself (yet), she could have been learning from you. Perhaps she was on that dig in the Yucatan with you, and/or she might have attended lectures you gave.

The site with Amy's character portrait no longer exists, but I found it archived by the Wayback Machine:

Oh, now this sounds interesting! I've been wanting to pull out this character since the last Masks campaign fizzled out... This is a work in progress at the moment and I'll work in skills once the character concept is approved.

Appearance: Dayton Williams is a tall, strapping young male. He exercises religiously, jogging 5 miles every morning at sunrise, then performing calisthetics and weightlifting for an hour or two until he eats breakfast and gets ready for work. If time permits after work, he spends time in batting and fielding practice, or playing in non-league ballgames with friends. He does not smoke cigarettes, but occasionally can be found drinking with buddies.

He keeps his hair in a tight brushcut and is fastidious about hygiene. If he’s not wearing his exercising outfits or work uniforms, he prefers to wear a collared shirt with rolled-up sleeves, no tie, and loose-fitting slacks. His clothing is well-worn since he cannot afford much on his meager salary as a mechanic and orderly, but they are always cleaned and pressed. He just purchased a new pair of workboots that he often wears both on and off duty.

He continues to keep his baseball uniforms, cleats, and ballplaying equipment hung and sorted in a separate closet, well maintained, and ready for use.

Personality: Dayton is determined, but outgoing and happy-go-lucky. Because of his moderate success and frequent travels in his minor league baseball career, he has a large number of friends in cities along the East Coast and in a variety of occupations. Once his exercise routines are out of the way for the day, he loves to spend his free time playing cards and chatting with friends and colleagues. He knows whom to contact if he has questions. He always has a joke or funny story at hand. He is of average intelligence and has worked hard to increase his knowledge of mechanics for his job.

When Dayton encounters trouble, he turns to his disciplined side, sizes up the problem, and works quietly and diligently towards its solution. Once the problem is overcome, he returns to his normal, joking self. Although Dayton is certainly capable of handling himself physically, he usually thinks before he acts, however he does have a temper that occasionally gets the best of him.

Up until the past year, Dayton was firmly grounded in “reality” and did not believe in ghosts, extraterrestrials, or spiritual phenomena. Lately, however, once he began working at the New York City Asylum's garage, Dayton has begun to notice strange occurrences. The other day, he noticed a team of investigators who visited the Asylum to speak with Professor Witherspoon and, after warmly smiling and flirting a bit with Nurse Taylor, he managed to pry a little information loose and, even better, was allowed to eavesdrop a bit at the door. He’s now keenly interested in their activities and intends to confront the team about their investigations. He has talked about this in his conversations with Jackson Elias.

Background: Born July 7, 1909 in Albany, Indiana, Dayton traveled to the Massachusetts area after high school to join the Boston minor league team. He later moved to New York City when the team cancelled his contract and vowed to get in the best shape of his life and try again to make the major leagues, but in an acknowledgement to the reality of needing a decent job, he apprenticed in a local garage while playing ball, and eventually landed a part-time job at the NYC Asylum's garage.

He maintains his part time job, rather than a full time job, so that he may focus on his exercising and baseball tryouts.

Bats right, throws right.

How Dayton knows Jackson Elias: Dayton came into contact with Jackson at the NYC Asylum library. Being an outgoing person, Dayton immediately struck up a conversation with Jackson about his studies and travels, and they've been friends ever since. Dayton visits Jackson at his New York Hotel whenever Jackson is in town.

I'm thinking of creating an explorer type character, perhaps an old British India hand who may have advised in the past in regard to the Cult of Thugee?

Probably would be based on the military officer type profession.

My rolls weren't exactly famous. To justify such low EDU and still be an archaeologist, I decide that my char is not working at an university. I used the sugestions from Mr Handy, so Amy have met Michael in an expedition. He was interested in her, but not in love.
I hope you like the char. Feel free to make any change/sugestion.

Michael Anderson was born in a middle class family in Arkham. He graduated in History in the University of Arkham; his passion was ancient Egypt. But with the war, he joined the army and was send to France. When he returned, he didn’t have much patience to continue his studies and make a PHD like it was suppose, he wanted to go to the field. Since Egyptology was a major interest of the British and not of the Americans, he joined a British expedition; with his expertise in hieroglyphs, he was a valuable member. After 3 years, he started to search for sponsors to finance him but the only one who accepted him, wanted to make an expedition to the Yucatan. One of the members was Amy, a young and pretty student; he was vaguely interested in her, but she didn’t show any affection for him, so he returned to his work. Michael returned with several artefacts, a book about his findings and a promise from his sponsor to pay another expedition to Yucatan. Michael was starting to despair. And one day, Amy found him in a lecture. She decide to present him to Jackson Elias. Michael was less than enthusiastic: the man wasn’t exactly known to be a reputable academic… But Jackson quickly conquered Michael with his charisma and wits. Michael don’t take Jackson very seriously, but likes him anyway.

Because you're at least ten years older than the minimum age of EDU+6, you get an extra point of EDU. This raises your Know and Own Language by 5, and it gives you another 20 occupational skill points.

Hey gang, just a shirt post from my phone on the emerald isle. I'll probably play an author/adventurer, Hemingway-type. He'll publish at Prospero House, be up to date on all the manly sports, so a possible link with our baseballs and will have been in a few fights with Jackson Elisa.

Cool! Sounds a lot like your character from War of the Dead (where I played a baseball player).

Everyone's characters or concepts are fine so far. I'm keeping up with the discussion, but you don't need me too much for this part.

Just waiting to hear from Royya now and we'll know who everyone's playing, even if we don't know all the details. :)

Spot on, Mr. H! But since that one got infected rather early on in the game I never got the chance to flesh out his character arch, though we had some nice chemistry there.

Here's hoping he lasts through the intro :-D

Clark Goodman
I will play a 40 years old Trumpet Jazz musician character. He was an orphan and knew Jackson Elias when they were kids.
With no parents, the only one that was left is his 85 years old grandma - she practiced voodoo secretly in the past and taught Clark some secrets which he revealed to Jackson in the past.

Nice character concept! 8-) Any relation to Benny Goodman? Since you're at least 20 years older than the minimum age for your EDU, you get a second bonus EDU point (along with the increased Know and Own Language and 20 more occupational skill points). Also, it looks like the Archaeology base skill level was copied over from Michael's character sheet, as you probably want a 01 for that. You'll probably also want to be more specific about your Art skill (most likely Art(Music) or something similar). There are multiple African languages, so I think that will need to be more specific too.
