"Roberts, McCoy, go with him," said the sergeant. Two of the soldiers joined Newton in escorting Brian west down the road. An armored personnel carrier blocked off the street, but they were able to go around it on foot. Soon they reached the red public phone booth with a cottage just past it. "That's the one," said Brian.

Brian nodded. The two soldiers took up their positions on either side of the front door.

The lights were off at first, but Newton knocked and they came on after a short wait. Peeking through the window, he could see a living room with expensive furnishings. After a short wait, a white-haired, bespectacled, wrinkled man of about sixty years in a nightgown opened the door from within the cottage, carrying a black doctor's bag. He listened while Newton explained. "Of course, Private," he said, stepping outside and shutting the door behind him. "Is Dr. Kirby all right?"

"Command Central, this is Elliot, come in," said Elliot Webb's voice on the radio. "Calling command central please respond."

"This is Greyhound One," replied the Brigadier's voice. "Webb, where the bloody hell are you? What's your situation? Over."

"Of course," said Dr. Strong, opening the door again and going back inside. "Please, come in. It's pouring outside. I do hope nobody's hurt."

"Sir, thank God," Elliot responded, "Listen sir, I'm in the middle of all this mess, and sir, your forces are in serious trouble. You don't know what a shit storm you have walked into. You need to pull out now sir, NOW."

"It's not as bad as all that," said the Brigadier. "I know what has happened to our naval forces, but our ground troops are doing well. Now, where exactly are you? I'll send some people to get you."

Everyone followed Dr. Strong inside, passing through a small foyer and into a large living room. The doctor indicated an expensive-looking couch that was big enough for the four of them. There was also a leather armchair, where the doctor sat. "I never met Mr. Webb, no," he said. "How else can I help you?"

"Trap One, we've arrived at the Rose Cottage," said Roberts.

"Understood," replied Salem Shields.

"Let's see, that was a few days ago," said Dr. Strong. "Tuesday evening, I believe. She was asking questions about a former patient of mine, from a long time ago, a Mrs. Beth Armistead. This had been back in 1954. Normally I wouldn't remember a case from that far back, but this one I'm not like to forget."

"I am fine, sir," replied Elliot, "you don't need to worry about me. But you have no idea what you are facing. Pull back, let's open a dialogue with them, before any more good people are killed."

"That's not going to happen, Webb," said the Brigadier. "Now tell me where you are. That is a direct order!"

Dr. Strong sighed. "A terrible case," he said. "Normally I would never divulge such confidential details, but Dr. Kirby convinced me. She is a fellow doctor, and she assured me that the patient was now deceased. Even so, I still might not have told her, but she told me the importance of her work. One night in 1954, Zeke Baker found poor Beth Armistead lying naked on the beach. She had numerous bite and claw marks. He brought her here to me, and I examined her. It turned out that she had been...assaulted."

"I'm on the beach, sir," Elliot said over the radio.

"Where on the beach?" asked the Brigadier. "Webb? Webb!"

"On my way," replied Salem, crossing into the lobby.

"I don't really know why Dr. Kirby asked about it," said Dr. Strong, "but it seemed to be exactly what she wanted to know. As to how she found out about it, I presume she must have spoken to Zeke Baker. He's the only other one who knew...apart from her assailant, that is. Mrs. Armistead couldn't identify him, or even remember what had happened - which was probably for the best. She didn't want the police told. She just wanted to get out of Dunwich as soon as she could. Wait, did you just say 'survivors'? If there's anyone in need of medical attention, I should be there to help."

"I just got outside," said Salem. "I see some men out on the beach, and the boat is going back out to sea with two more on board. There's one of those Sea Devils there with them!"

"I'm afraid I don't," said Dr. Strong. "I just know it must be important. I'll be pleased to help however I can."
