Please go ahead and create characters. They should be British and be serving military, though at the time of this story on leave in Gloucester. Concentrate your skills on any pre-war areas such as academic or early career. Don't get to hung up on statistics as this will be a very rules-light scenario. :D

Something I forgot. Please give your character a phobia, nothing major just something that he might have an iratinal fear of. Probably something from childhood, or maybe something linked to his war years. This should not be some kind of debilitating fear but a mild dislike. For example spiders or dark places. ;)

clearly going to be fire, given Maurice's experienced of smoke inhalation damage! Or, if more suitable, smoke!

I was also thinking of fire for my character, before I read that, but I could choose something different if that's a problem.

Fire is fine Mr H. I would presume, as Supercape said, that smoke would better fit Maurice's backstory. Remember these are not debilitating phobias such as might be caused by a failed sanity roll, more a slight fear due to some trauma in the past.

Smoke it is then. Although I daresay anything that might impair his breathing is just cause for anxiety!

Either way is fine. I should be able to get an initial post in before I leave as long as the IC thread is posted early enough, but I'm okay with waiting until July 5 or 6.

Nice start. Ill wait for Mr Handy to respond.

As for links between the two characters, I would suggest they were part of the same unit and Oliver treated Maurice for smoke inhalation and minor burns. Maurice is on indefinite sick leave and Oliver thought he would pop in on his old patient for his sick leave (Maurice is highly grateful to the man that probably saved his life, but on the other hand has a small fear that either Oliver would cut short his sick leave and press him back to service in some form, or that Oliver would cut down his night term opium addiction - although on the other hand Oliver might be a source of additional medication). I am open to suggestion about any other link!

I'm going to presume Maurice has been in Gloucester for a few months but is not familiar with it, having spent most of the time in an army medical rehabilitation place nearby - so not exactly ignorant, but still unfamiliar.

That makes sense. Oliver would be careful not to prescribe opiates when they're not necessary, as he wouldn't want to feed an addiction.

Okay that about wraps up the first part of the adventure. Oliver has suggested visiting his parents house in the hopes of finding something in his desceased uncles belongings appertaining to the Exham hill affair, and so we will begin chapter two there at Oliver's parents house.

However from this point on the ball is in your court. You may go where you wish and investigate as you wish. Up until now you have been led by events, but now you are on your own. Good luck chaps, and happy landings!

I actually read it about a month ago.

It was madness, I tell you...madness!

Whilst I thought the story and prose was actually a little under average for HPL, I think it is his best piece in examining the actual process of descending into insanity (and possibly one of the best pieces in literature full stop). For that reason, one of his best!

I am happy to cut scene to either the Sanitorium or to tracking down the professors. Whilst Maurice is fairly smart, I consider him perceptive enough to know that Oliver is smarter and under such circumstances will defer to his judgement! :)

So it seems you have mined the good Dr Stone for all the information she has on Trask. Where would you like to head now?

Using the principle of geography, I would imagine the nearest is the other professor?
