Investigators

"In June 1845, two Royal Navy vessels, H.M.S. Erebus and H.M.S. Terror under the command of Sir John Franklin departed the Shetland Islands on their quest to search for and chart the long sought North-West Passage. Initially the expedition made excellent progress, but this ended when they were beset by ice to the North of King William Island on 12th September 1846.

On 5th April 1848, the doomed vessels were abandoned and the remaining crew members attempted to head South to safety at trading posts in Canada. Unfortunately their trek was doomed to failure and all were doomed, so the public believe, to starvation, disease and the elements.

Tne investigators are part of a long-term experiment being conducted in the Northern reaches of Canada. Sponsored by the University of Toronto and The Canadian Government, the plan is for a select group of experts and scientists to live and work on a permanent base on the Adelaide peninsula near the location of some of the remains of some of the Franklin Expedition members previously discovered."

Investigators

Post by Cearlan »

Herein go the investigator sheets.

Use standard rolling formula i.e. 3D6 rolls for STR, CON, POW, DEX and APP; 2D6+6 for SIZ and INT and 3D6+3 for EDU (mix the 5 x 3D6 rolls and 2 x 2d6+6 to suit your investigator concept remembering the lower limit of 12 for CON.

INT x 5 for idea roll and EDU x 5 for know while POW x 5 gives Luck

Add STR and SIZ to work out the Damage Bonus while Hit points are the average of CON and SIZ, rounded up. Magic Points equal to POW.

Skills
Once the investigators occupation has been determined, divide the number of points from EDU x 20 as you wish through the eight or so relevant skills. Personal interest skills are based on INT x 10.

All standard fare really.

Now to the skills needed for the opening scenario;

Anthropologist / Ethnologist / Historian
Skills; Anthropology 50%, History 50%
Duties; Examine in detail the local Inuit (culture, trade, industry folklore language etc.) and life in the Arctic.

Archaeologist / Historian
Skills; Archaeology 50%, History 50%, Navigation 20%
Duties: Investigate the fate of the Franklin Expedition. Gather as much information and evidence as possible and attempt to determine what happened to that ill-fated party.

Artist / Photographer
Skills; Art (Draw) 50%, Photography 50%
Duties; Document the life of the expedition using photos and drawings.
Note – this is the only non-vital position and should be taken up by another team member in addition to his primary duties if possible.

Botanist
Skills; Biology 50%
Duties; Conduct research on the regions flora. Catalogue and obtain as many samples as possible.

Doctor / Physician
Skills; First Aid 60%, Medicine 50%, Pharmacy 30%, Psychology 40%, Psychoanalysis 30%
Duties; Take care of medical problems as they arise. Determine the physical and psychological effects of isolation and a harsh environment on humans for prolonged periods of time by observing the other expedition members.

Geologist
Skills; Chemistry 25%, Geology 50%, Navigation 25%
Duties; Examine the region with an eye to potential for mineral exploitation.

Guide
Skills; Drive Sled 45%, Electrical Repair 45%, Mechanical repair 45%, Navigation 50%, Speak Inuit 55%, Rifle 45%, Inuit Occult 20% (if of inuit origin)
Duties; Maintain the base camp inclining machinery and the building. Escort scientists on field trips. Hunt for fresh meat when the time and opportunity arises.
Note; If there are several guides, the various Maximum skills may be divided between them so that an individual guide need not be saddled with all the above skills and duties.

Zoologist
Skills; Biology 50%, Photography 25% Taxidermy 45%.
Duties; Conduct research on regional fauna. Catalog, photograph and obtain samples of specimens.

Appearance & Personality: Diana Veness is about five and a half feet tall and weighs 130 pounds. She has blonde hair and hazel eyes. She might be pretty if she made an effort, but she seldom does. She has high moral standards, and she is also a dedicated activist for causes she believes in strongly. Some people might find her abrasive for her determined stands.

Background: Diana has always loved flowers since she was a little girl, and she enjoys attending the Philadelphia Flower Show every year. She was inspired to learn more about plants and how they work, which led to her becoming a biologist and a botanist. While studying at Miskatonic University in Arkham, she had also been a suffragette and joined the Women's Temperance League, and she had campaigned against American entry into the Great War in high school. While this last cause met with failure, she did enjoy victory in the former two in 1919 and 1920. After graduating in 1921, she got a position teaching biology at Miskatonic. When the opportunity arose to head into the Arctic on a long-term expedition, she jumped at the chance. While she'll miss the Flower Show two years running, she'll get to see even more exotic plants and perhaps even get to make new discoveries.

Appearance & Personality:

Bony and of above average height, with a fastly receeding hair line. The stress of his wife's death took a tool on Newton's appearance and even changed the tone of his skin to a more yellowish palor, but his long deft hands, like those of a pianist, have lost none of their nimbleness.
His no-nonsense personality, that can be just shy of blunt, makes him less charismatic that he could be. Despite a life better than most he has an unfulfilled craving for adventure that his hunting hobby isn't fulfilling. Now living alone and aged over half a century he sees the expedition as his last true chance at it. Somewhat libertarian-minded the Doctor is very much in favor in favor of civilian gun ownership and a (secretly) stauch anti-prohibiotionist who thinks the Volstead Act is the stupidest thing the government had come up with since the Income Tax. Every so often he pays a visit to Arkham's less seedy speakeasies, and has gone as far as teaching himself to mix a drinkable cocktail using medical alchohol.

Background:

Dr. Feigel is a born and bred Arkhamite. Except for the hunting trips which are his only true vice he has seldom left the town. Arkham is where he grew up, got his medical degree, met his wife (now dead for a few years) and raised his son (who now lives in Boston). He owns a small clinic that caters mostly to Arkham's middle class and is a fairly well knwn person among the community's respectable circles. A past member of several different social clubs throughout his life, nowdays the doctor only holds membership in the Lodge Hunters Fellowship Association. His irregular social life is split between acquaintances in the medical community and his hunting buddies. His professional reputation is that of a Doctor that charges fair prices and tells his patients the truth without skirting around the issue. In preparing for the expedition he's aquired a few books and got a crash-course in the Inuit language.

Background:

Despite his college education (Art History at Browns) Patrick Lewis rebelled against his Boston blue blood heritage and joined the army as an enlisted man. Joining the 26th Infantry regiment in the Philippines, his intelligence and education were recognised and he found himself quickly rising through the ranks. By the time the 26th returned to CONUS he had risen to the rank of sergeant, leading his men against Mexican bandits and helping to settle disputes in the Indian Territory. June 1917 the 26th was selected as one of only four Regular Army infantry regiments deemed fit for immediate combat to form the first American Expeditionary Division.

Patrick Lewis was one of the first American soldiers to arrive in France, the 26th immediately left for the front. Along with its sister regiments of the 1st division, it earned more campaign streamers than any other regiments during World War I. At Soissons the regiment was forced to pay a terrible butchers bill, the regimental commander, executive officer, two of three battalion commanders and the regimental sergeant major were all killed in action; out of 3,100 Blue Spaders that started the attack, over 1,500 had been killed or wounded. Patrick was among them, bayoneted in the back when his position was overrun. Patrick was in a convalescent home for the rest of the war while he learnt to walk again. The injury plagues Patrick still and while he can walk and run well enough his upper body always remains stiff and he is slow to turn and sudden movement of his upper body often cause him discomfort.

Unable and unwilling to continue his career in the army Lewis left returning initially to his home state, however he found life at home unbearable, people and the world in general too loud and intrusive, his search for peace and seclusion finally led him to the wilds of Alaska where he found work as a hunter, guide and trapper. Since then he has travelled through Alaska, the North West Territories and Nunavut.

Appearance & Personality:
Jesse Young is a man of small stature and nondescript looks which he hides behind a large beard. He has a dry humour and fast wit though it is rarely seen as he is a serious man.

He is the classic introvert, happy with his own company and likes studying people but would rather interact with them on his terms. Some would regard him aloof but this is more to do with his social inadequacies and inability to engage in casual conversation than any sense of superiority.

Many think it is strange for a man whose outward persona is so inward looking to be a highly regarded anthropologist but studying people and their cultures is not the same as forging friendships. He would rather spend time in an alien culture than talking politics, the news of the day or idle chatter with his peers.

Background:
James Young was born and raised in a woodsman cabin about 2 miles out of Bakers Lake in the Ninavut territories of Canada. Both his parents were hard working, his father as a trapper and his mother at the trading post in the community. They were kindly and indulged their son as much as they could.

James was always bookish and devoured whatever books his parents could beg, borrow or buy for him. He also loved the outdoors and he would often accompany his father on fishing and hunting trips out in the wilds, often camping out for several days at a time. At this point in his life, James was fit and active and healthy as young boy.

Bakers Lake was a small community of no more than 60 people, around 80% of which were inuit. James grew up in around the inuit people and absorbed much of their language and customs. Though he had few friends he knew enough families to be welcomed in to share a meal to help with tasks and chores. It was with one such family that he learned to drive a dog-sled and soon began helping them drive supplies around the local communities.

When he was 14 years old he was helping drive a team of sleds to a inuit community 20 miles north when he lost control of the sled. He fell badly, trapping his leg between the sled and and the snow and being pulled several hundred yards before the dogs slowed. James suffered a compound fracture of his tibia and fibia, a dislocated knee and broken pelvis. The inuit family he was working with took him back to Baker's lake where he was treated as best as possible by the local doctor, who set and splinted his shin and relocated his knee. He was then taken on a long, painful and arduous journey to Churchill where his leg was reset and he stayed for several weeks. The doctors at Churchill knew he needed better medical facilities and thus began the second long and painful journey to Winnipeg. Once there the doctors knew that little more could be done for James. His pelvis healed badly twisted and both shin bones were badly splinted and fused incorrectly. He walks with a very pronounced limp and lives with constant pain.

James outdoor life had come to end and as he recovered his body slowly wasted, his muscular frame and powerful legs atrophying away. James was stayed at a charitable refuge and was fortunate to meet and befriend an aging doctor close to retirement who helped inspire him to overcome his disability. He taught him to walk again without using a cane and also allowed him free rein to his library. Rather than falling into despondency, James grabbed the opportunity and began to study with an earnest intent - he was particularly drawn to texts about the people he had grown up with - the inuits.

James stayed with doctor - almost as a surrogate son and on his passing was surprised to receive a large sum of money from his estate. James was able to continue his education and eventually graduated college and entered the prestigious McGill University at Montreal, where he studied anthropology, specialising in the inuit culture in particular.

James continued into academia, become a Doctor of Anthropology. He still loves the outside and will take as many field-trips as he can get the university to pay for and returns to Bakers Lake at least once a year to visit his community. He still walks with a pronounced limp and can barely run but this has not hampered him.

As a thanks to the doctor who helped his recovery, James sends 20% of his income to a foundation set up in Winnipeg, to help children that have suffered injuries and do not have the funds for long hospital stays and also to help them with an education.

Appearance & Personality:
Dougal is a short, rather nuggety and solid looking Scotsman, permanently slightly tanned from years on ships and then working archeological digs. Dougal has short, thick arms ending in large, stubby fingered hands. He walks with a slight limp, is amazingly clumsy, and speaks with a distinct Glaswegian brogue. Dougal is generally happy doing anything, rarely complains and avoids arguments. He sports a rather naval looking dark beard and is rarely seen without a pipe between his teeth. Dougal's standard attire is a black beanie, a tartan scarf and a dark blue ex-naval duffle coat.

Background:
As a child in dour Glasgow, Dougal sought escape in books on history and legend. At age 17, he ran away to sea and joined the Royal Navy, wanting to see the far off places from his history books. Hard work, natural aptitude, and diligent and relentless bribery led several years later to Dougal being selected for officer training, and in due course he was commissioned as a midshipman. By the start of the Great War, Dougal was a lieutenant on a destroyer. Badly injured at the Battle of Jutland, Dougal was invalided out but managed to secure entrance to the University of St Andrews. Some seven years later, PhD in Archeology completed, Dougal commenced a new and rather gypsy-like life travelling the world and working as a field archaeologist.
