IC-Ep 4-And the Law Won(Elliot Webb only)

Unknown Place
Unknown Time

Elliot came to with a splitting headache. It hurt so bad that it took him a moment to realize that his arms ached too. This was because they were manacled to the wall above his head. That wall was rough, and it appeared to be a cavern of some sort. It was partially submerged, and he was up to his neck in water. Further along the wall to his left were three empty sets of similar manacles. Before him stood the sergeant, a furious scowl on his face. In his left hand, he held a flaming torch high overhead, and with his right he was bandaging Elliot and doing a decent job of it. Elliot started to feel somewhat better.

"Ah, you're awake," he said. "It was a touch and go there for a while. Thought we might lose you. Rackham got a wee bit too enthusiastic. O' course, you may come to wish you had died..."

Elliot does a mental check of himself. Any injuries, and are my legs shackled?
.
"So why bother to heal me?"

"Because it's harder to question you when you're dead," said the sergeant, a grim expression on his face.

Elliot was still very badly injured and only barely conscious, but he had sustained no new injuries since he had been bludgeoned to sleep. His legs were free, albeit underwater.

"Pull the other one, it's got bells on," said the sergeant. "You and your mates attacked us on the beach, and you'd robbed Mr. Horsham. With everything else that's been happening, you've got to be up to something. You don't have any rights here. As far as the rest of the world is concerned, you're a wanted criminal who fled from police and disappeared. Nobody's going to be looking for you here. Now, either you talk to me, or I turn you over to Y'Hali. She has ways of making you talk."

"Answer your questions? You haven't asked any questions. I'm confused by this whole busness." Elliot changes his expression from confrontational and confused to worried, "Look man, I really don't know what's going on here. I'm sure you want me out of your hair as much as I want to get out of it. Let me go and You'll never see me again."

OOC,He's not going to let you go, but you might manage to convince him that you're just an ordinary criminal with no idea what's going on in Dunwich.

"You're right, the name's Elliot." Elliot swallows hard like he's really scared."I'm just a two-bit con man. I ran into the old broad coming into town. I was trying to sell her some of your beach front property. She looked gullable enough. Look, I had no idea what was going on and I don't want to know."
.
"You're right about one thing, I have no idea how to use a knife or any other weapon. I'm not sure who you think I am or what group I'm in, but seriously. Did you see my fighting skills? I'm lucky I didn't cut myself." Elliot looks down, "Sorry I attacked you guys, there was all this yelling and running and I thought the guy was diving at me, I just panicked."

"Yeah, well, maybe that's so," said the sergeant grudgingly. "I'll go see what my superiors want done with you. Don't go anywhere." He chuckled as he said this last, then turned around and waded away through the water. Now that he was no longer directly in front of Elliot, the only visible exit from the cavern was revealed behind him: a sloping tunnel leading upwards.

Now that I'm alone, I test the Manacles for strength or if there is a chance for me to slip out of them.

I feel around on the floor or walls for anything I might could use to help me out.

When the sergeant left, the cave was shrouded in darkness, though a faint glow came from the tunnel leading upwards. There was nothing Elliot could feel within reach that would help. He tested the manacles and found that they were too strong for him to have any hope of breaking, though someone of greater might could have had a chance. However, they were not excessively tight, and he was very agile. If he relaxed his muscles, he just might have been able to squeeze his hands out of them.

Elliot barely managed to slip his hands out of the manacles, though it was painful. Of course, everything hurt already, so he hardly noticed it. No sooner was he free than he could see the three constables, led by the sergeant, starting to wade down the sloping tunnel leading into the partially submerged cavern. They hadn't seen him yet, but they would in a few seconds.

If they move up to the wall in search of him, he will try and push off the wall and glide past, then come up running. If they turn and run back up the tunnel he will wait there.

Elliot could hear quite well what was being said in the chamber above and ahead.

"He's gone!" came the sergeant's voice, sounding rather angry. "You were supposed to be watching this room."

"We're watching the entrance," burbled an unfamiliar voice with a croaky timbre. "He couldn't have get past us that way. And you watch your tongue. We are your elders, and you are not yet fully one of us."

The sergeant sighed in resignation. "We're going to inform Y'Hali. She will know what to do about him - and about you lot. Then we'll search the caves top to bottom. You three keep an eye on that entrance."

Three sets of footsteps moved away and faded into the distance. They were heading upwards and to the left. Soon it fell quiet.

Elliot made his way up the tunnel and emerged into a larger, round chamber. The water here was only about two feet deep. It surrounded a raised dais of dry land in the middle, as if it were a moat. On the platform stood a rectangular altar made of obsidian with horns on its four corners. The cavern was lit by flaming torches in sconces on the walls. Three additional tunnels led out of this room. The one in the left wall slanted upwards, rising out of the water. The one opposite and the one in the right wall both sloped downwards, where the water got deeper. Three large Sea Devils stood guard at the right edge of the rocky platform, watching the exit in that direction. They looked like the one that Salem had captured, with long string mesh vests, spears, and large nets. None of them seemed to have heard him, so intent were they on their vigil.

Elliot waded through the moat and ascended the upward-sloping tunnel, this time more carefully. The water level dropped off, and soon the ground was dry. He emerged into another round chamber, this one also with a tunnel exiting in each of the four cardinal directions. The one ahead of him continued to ascend, but the ones on the left and right were level. A faint orange glow came from the tunnel to the left, similar to the one behind him from the torches in the altar room. Voices also came from the tunnel on the left. Another three Sea Devils stood in this room, facing the ascending tunnel straight ahead. They had not noticed him either.
OOC,Yes, that's correct, the tunnel to the left went upwards, and the others all went down. They were watching the one to the right. Elliot, please roll Sanity again, the same as before. Also, please roll Listen.

Elliot could make out what the voices down the left tunnel were saying.

"I secured him well, I'm sure of it," insisted the sergeant's voice. "I don't know how he got loose from his chains, or how he got through the altar room without the guards noticing. The point is that we need to find him."

"He can't have gone far," said one of the other constables. "The exits are guarded, and he's badly injured. We really beat the stuffing out of him."

"Nonetheless, we cannot take chances," said a low, burbling, vaguely female voice. "The human must not be allowed to escape. He has probably already seen too much."

"Shall we release Rover, High Priestess?"

"I doubt that will be necessary."

"I am exhausted from controlling him anyway," said another female-sounding voice similar to the first. "I would rather not let him out of the pit again just now. Perhaps we should have Emilia track him down. I'm sure she'd appreciate having a plaything."

Elliot followed the tunnel, which opened up into another chamber. It was smaller than the other ones, and the walls were rougher and more irregular. There were no other exits besides the one through which he came. He was still able to hear the distant voices.

"Best not to give him to Emilia until we're done with him," said the High Priestess. "She might break him. Victoria may want him too."

"Well, we'd better start the search," said the sergeant. "Come on, men."

Three sets of footsteps headed towards the cavern that Elliot had just left.

Elliot looks around the small room he is in. Is there a place to hid in here, even if its up against the wall next to the entrace. So if they did a cursory look they wouldn't see me.
.
He also looks for a small rock. Something he could throw that would make enough noise to distract the guards.
.
If they go through the last room and head towards the room I am in, I'll try and hide as best possible.
.
If they turn and go down to where I had come from, I plan to go back to the room I was in, and distract the guards by throwing the rocks into an empty hall. Then make a sprint up the hall they are guarding.

What does Elliot think his odds of pulling this off are?

Elliot easily found a small rock on the floor of the small chamber.

"You two make sure the storeroom's empty," said the sergeant. "I'll wait for you here, and then we'll head down."

"Right, Sarge," said one of the constables. Two sets of footsteps began to approach. Elliot looked around for a hiding place, but the only decent one in this cave was against the wall next to the entrance.
OOC,Elliot, please roll Hide. The chances of this are decent. In order to throw a rock and distract the guards later, it will require a Throw roll at that time in order to throw it far and accurately enough to divert them away from you. Elliot pressed himself against the wall as the two constables entered the cave, bearing their torches and looking around. He seemed to have disappeared completely, for they took no notice of him and left a few seconds later.

"It's empty," said one of them.

"All right, we'll head down next," said the sergeant. "He couldn't have gotten past the guards without them noticing. He's either got to be in Emilia's cave, or else he doubled back to the dungeon. Either way, we'll get him." Three sets of footsteps headed down the slope, soon splashing into the water.

Elliot carefully made his way back to the central chamber he had just left. The three Sea Devils were still there, watching the upward-sloping passage that was now on the right. Their backs were to him, and they still had no idea he was there. He could hear the police splashing around down the tunnel to his left. Straight ahead was the exit they had emerged from after talking to the high priestess, through which he could see torchlight.

As Elliot approached the curve, he caught a glimpse of part of a huge, brightly lit chamber in the distance. Three more Sea Devils were visible, all with string mesh vests like the others, but only one carried a spear. He was seated on the ground before a large gilded throne with an iron lever beside it. Upon the throne sat a female Sea Devil wearing a golden tiara, and another female Sea Devil was at her side. Gray blobs of slime covered this one's claws. In the middle of the chamber was a vast, slightly raised circular mosaic with carvings that he couldn't make out from here.

Elliot threw the rock, but it fell short and landed in the middle of the chamber below. Two of the creatures turned to look, but Elliot was safely ensconced in the dark tunnel leading to the storage room.

"What was that?" asked one of the Sea Devils.

"There it is again!" said the first Sea Devil. "It's coming from the storage room."

"I heard it too," said the second.

"I didn't hear anything," said the third, "and the coppers already searched it."

"Well, I'm going to go check it out," said the first, and he strode towards the tunnel down which Elliot had gone.

Elliot sucker punched the Sea Devil, his fist impacting it right in the nose, or what passes for it with these creatures. Blood sprayed out of it and the monster reeled. While the blow might have taken down a man, these things were a bit tougher. Further hits might do the trick, but would he get the chance?

"It's the human!" bellowed the Sea Devil, looming over Elliot at over eight feet tall. It flicked the net at him, but it was still wobbly from the punch and missed.

Elliot sprinted between the Sea Devils as they gathered up their nets again. They chased him down the tunnel and back into the central chamber, where the sergeant and his men were just returning from the downward-sloping passage on the left. "Hey!" shouted the sergeant as Elliot turned right and darted up the tunnel in that direction, his former captors in hot pursuit. The tunnel rose gradually. At the end was a narrow stone stairway leading further upwards. It was only wide enough for two to walk side by side. The Sea Devils were right behind him, followed closely by the police.

Elliot continues to run, as fast as his legs will carry him. If he sees something that can easily be thrown in front of the pursuers, he will try and knock that down to slow them down. So Torch or chairs or anything. Otherwise he just keeps running looking for a way out.

The stairway was devoid of everything, including light. If it weren't for the torches of the police bringing up the rear of the group of pursuers, Elliot wouldn't be able to see a thing. As it was, it was still difficult to see, but he could make out the outline of the steps. Before long, he reached the top. The stairs went all the way to the flat roof of the cavern, where they inexplicably stopped.

Elliot could see a square outline in the cavern roof above him, and he could tell that it was a loose stone slab set into the ceiling that might be pushed upwards and removed. Relief flooded him that there should be another way out of here, as nobody would waste the effort building a stairway that didn't go anywhere.

Elliot slid the slab aside easily enough, revealing moonlight above him. The stairs actually went all the way up to where the slab had been, so he was able to simply run up them. The first two Sea Devils were right behind him, and they nearly snared him in a net before he bolted.

Elliot emerged into a ruined abbey perched on a high cliff top. Ahead, a road was visible some distance away. Behind him was the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea, which had to be to the east.

Elliot sprinted for the road, the shadowy shapes of his pursuers not far behind him. A wall separated the ruins from the road, but there was a gate. While a barrier prevented vehicles from entering from the road, it was no obstacle to a pedestrian. It was when Elliot reached this that he realized where he was. Across the street was a familiar cottage, where earlier today (was it still the same day?) he had met the writer Virgil Soames. The ruins were thus Greyfriars Abbey. The road went southwest (towards Lake Manor) and northeast (towards Dunwich proper).

If there is a light on or any kind of life, Elliot will give his last sprint to head towards the cottage of Virgil Soames.

Footsteps approached the front door from within the house, and a light went on in the window next to the door as well. The creatures chasing Elliot paused, then faded into the shadows. A moment later, the door opened to reveal Virgil Soames carrying a double-barreled shotgun in his left hand, pointed at the ground at an angle. "Mr. Webb," he said. "I think you'd better come inside." He stepped out of Elliot's way.

Elliot leans back when he sees the shotgun, but is greatly releaved at Virgil's words and quickly slips into the cabin. "Thank you for opening the door, at least 5 of the beasts are out there. Sorry to lead them here sir, but I was on my last leg, I didn't have much choice." Elliot stands behind Virgil looking over his shoulder trying to catch his breath at the same time.

"I'm afraid I'm not much of a doctor, but I do have some iodine and bandages. I could call Dr. Strong if you like. He still makes housecalls. What happened to you? "Yes, there's one in the study," said Virgil. He opened a door in the left wall and led Elliot inside. The study had mahogany panels covering the walls. It contained a large fireplace, currently lit, a big oak writing desk with several drawers, a comfortable-looking leather armchair, and several shelves lined with books. An old-fashioned telephone was atop the desk, as was Midnight, who was curled up and sleeping.

Elliot picks up the phone and asks the operator to be connected to the Ship's Inn. When connected "Yes miss, I'd like to leave a message for my aunt. Ms. Valarie Soames, yes she is a guest there. Just leave the message that 'Elliot is staying at Virgil's house tonight, I'll see her in the morning.' Yes, that is correct. Thank you very much."
Elliot then sits down and sips a cup a hot tea, as its warmth floods through him, he nods off at some point, exhaustion and sweeping over him.

While Elliot had been on the telephone, Virgil had stepped out. He returned with the promised medical supplies and tea. Before Elliot had a chance to do much, there was a loud, insistent knock at the front door.

"Wait here," said Virgil. "I'll get that."

With the knock on the door Elliot's training kicked in and he was up looking for a weapon. Spotting the fireplace poker he grabs it and stands where he can see the door before Virgil can open it.

"Thank you for your concern," said Virgil, "but I'm quite capable of taking care of myself. The creatures know better than to bother me, and when they do come for someone they don't tend to knock." He made his way to the front door, holding the shotgun behind it. He undid the deadbolt but left the chain on as he opened the door slightly. "Good evening, constables. How can I help you?"

"We're looking for a dangerous fugitive," said the voice of the sergeant. "He and his friends assaulted us earlier. We managed to catch him, but then he got away from us. We got a report that he was seen on your property."

"Well, you're the only ones I've seen tonight."

"He might be hiding on the premises. Do you mind if we have a look around?"

"As a matter of fact, I do mind."

"We can just go and get a warrant, you know."

There were no better potential weapons visible.

"Then that's what you'll have to do," said Virgil. "I bid you gentlemen good night." Then he closed the door and returned to Elliot, ushering him into the study. "They must be looking for you," he said quietly. "I doubt they'll wait until morning either, given how anxious they seemed to find you. They can rouse the magistrate, who's in Lake's pocket, and get a warrant as a mere formality. It'll take them some time, but not too much. In the meantime, I'm sure they'll have someone watching the house."

I realize this may be hard to believe, but after you've seen those creatures, you must now be aware that there are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in your philosophy. Some of my ancestors were Vikings, and I've learned a bit of their magick." The way he pronounced it, the "k" at the end was almost audible. "Once the fog comes in, it will remain until morning. That will give you plenty of time to make your escape unseen. If you come with me to the kitchen, I'll show you. Why are they after you, by the way? You must have stirred up quite a hornet's nest!"

I'm afraid me calling the hotel, gave away my position, but they weren't far behind I figured they knew where I was." Elliot stops to take a breath. "Well if you can make fog, go for it, and I'll make a run into town to see if I can meet up with my friends. I can't thank you enough for what you've done."

I'm glad to help you, and anything I can do to frustrate their plans without violating the informal truce is an added bonus." He opened the refrigerator and took out a small bowl with its top covered in aluminum foil, which he placed on the kitchen table. He removed the foil to reveal the bowl's contents: water that smelled of sea salt. Then he sat down in front of the bowl and blew gently over it for several minutes. "That should do it," he said at last. "Are you sure you want to head back into town? Since they're looking for you, it will be highly dangerous."

Elliot realized that he had been going in circles earlier, and had run across the road near Virgil's cottage. The Sea Devils that had been chasing him had to have been the ones lying in wait watching the cottage. Since that road led back to town, he was able to head parallel to it through the woods to the northeast. Soon he saw buildings looming out of the darkness and fog ahead, and he made his way to the car park behind and beside the Ship Inn. Lights were on in some of the windows. However, he did not see the Model T or the Land Rover in the car park.

Elliot couldn't see anyone watching the inn, though the fog did limit his visibility. He did see a fire escape behind the inn that would give him access to the upper floor, but the ladder that would reach to the ground was currently in the raised position. However, he would likely still be able to climb up to the fire escape's landing.

Elliot was unable to find purchase on the inn wall and could not ascend to the landing. That still left him with the dilemma of what to do now. The inn did have a rear entrance, though there was no guarantee he'd be able to enter that way, and there was always the front door.

After he feels he has had enough of a break he slips back out the door and heads up towards the Inn trying to stay out of sight of any prying eyes.

Elliot returned to the car park outside the inn. There were several cars there, any of which he might be able to get inside, but hotwiring a vehicle was harder than it looked on the telly.
OOC,Elliot, it will take a Locksmith roll to get a car door open without having to break a window. However, to actually hotwire the car would then require an Electrical Repair roll. Instead of that, you can simply make a second Locksmith roll to pick the ignition. This only works because it's 1985; it can't be done on modern cars with electronic ignitions.

Elliot finds an older car that probably won't have an alarm. Checks inside for any flashing lights indicating an active alarm.
.
He gets ready to run in case an alarm goes off, he then tries a handle. If an alarm goes off, he will head for the bushes to hide before anyone can get out of the Inn.

If it doesn't go off, he will attempt to pick the lock of the door didn't open.
Locksmith roll,[dice]0[/dice]
Having successfully picked the lock, he will open the door, slip in and shut it as fast as possible.

Elliot pulls the beetle out of the parking lot and heads towards the road before turning on the lights. Then cruises towards the mansion he was at before, trying to follow the same roads he did earlier today. Elliot pulls the car back out of the drive and back onto the road. He drives down to where he scaled the wall earlier. He parks the car, turns out the lights but leaves it running.
.
He sits and waits, for a while watching to see if anyone followed him. If no one comes after 5 mins, he shuts the car off and attempts to scale the wall and into the compound.

There was no response to Elliot's knock, and he unlocked the small door through which people (or fishmen) could walk as quickly as if he were using the key. There was also a larger door, which when opened would allow cars to go in and out. The first car Elliot found was the Rolls-Royce that had followed them after he had rescued Dr. Kirby. There was also another car-shaped object underneath a tarp parked beside it.

Elliot didn't find any keys in either car. He realized that the Toyota was probably Dr. Kirby's car, which would explain why it had been hidden. Now that he thought about it, getting out of town and calling in to UNIT seemed like an excellent idea. The opposition had been alerted to him, and sticking around only put him in greater danger. His teammates had likely already fled, and if they were still here he might be of greater help to them by alerting UNIT than by rushing in on his own, especially since he was badly injured and barely conscious as it was.

ooc,let me know if you want me to make any rolls. I thought of doing this a long time ago, but I was afraid the others had been captured also and I didn't want to leave them behind. But I haven't even glanced at the other threads, so I really have no idea where everyone is.

I had assumed that since you didn't specifically shut off the engine, you had left it running on so that you could make a quick getaway if needed. It's good that you're not reading the other threads, as you're not supposed to read them until the adventure is over. Elliot easily scales the fence, and drives out of town. A weight lifts off him as he leaves Dunwich. He had been checking the rear view mirror looking for anyone following him, but after a while he knew he had a clean get away. As some of the stress and adrenaline left his body, he found his eyelids hard to hold open as he drove.
.
He eventually came upon a small store opening for the morning, and calls UNIT from there.

Elliot got back in the VW and drove off to the southwest, away from Dunwich. He soon reached an intersection with another road that went north and southwest. He had been here before, after rescuing Dr. Kirby. The north road led back to Dunwich, he recalled. He didn't know where the southwest road led.
OOC,I'm sorry, you'll still need to find your way to another town at this point. I just meant that Climb was the only roll needed to get away from the Lake property. You may roll Navigate if you wish.

Past the intersection was a dirt track heading south towards a few fenced-off, isolated buildings, and the paved road continued southwest around an S-curve. It then intersected with another dirt road that headed east, while the paved road continued west. More buildings were visible in both directions. Another dirt track headed south off of the dirt road to the east, leading to still more buildings. There was no way to tell what the buildings were at a glance, however. To the south, west, and east, woods started to surround the roads. There was still fog in the area, but it wasn't as thick as it had been farther north.

The road continued along the edge of the forest, which was on the left. After a little while, the fog finally thinned out. This was now a rural area, with farms on the right, and occasionally on the left where the woods had been cleared. Eventually, another, narrower road branched off to the left while the current road continued onwards.

Exhaustion overtook Elliot, and he slept as soundly as he ever had. He could have slept through an earthquake. He was only shaken awake when the police sergeant grabbed him roughly - and even then it was more his awful smell that brought him around. The other two constables were on either side, surrounding him.

The sergeant staggered back, his lip bleeding. He had already been badly injured earlier. The blow wasn't quite enough to lay him out, but it did cause him to lose his grip. "Told you he was dangerous, Miss," he said, spitting out a tooth. Now that he had been knocked out of the way, Elliot could see the receptionist standing behind the counter, her mouth hanging open in shock.

The quicker of the two constables took a swing at Elliot, but the rapidly changing situation threw him off and he accidentally struck the sergeant in the jaw, cracking bone and knocking him out cold! The other bobby had truer aim and managed to deck Elliot, beating him senseless and leaving him a bloody mess on the floor.

The fast policeman was unable to stop the bleeding, and neither could the other one. Just as Elliot's life was slipping away, the woman rushed to his side, knelt down, and expertly brought him back from the brink of death.

Elliot's eyes fluttered open. He was lying flat on his back next to the unconscious sergeant, with the desk clerk leaning over him, bandaging his wound. Everything in his body hurt, and he knew that he was on the very threshold of death's door. "Try not to move," she said softly.

"Don't try that again, Mister," snarled the cop who had nearly killed him. "We wouldn't want you to die before you talk. Come along quietly, then. We can do this the easy way or the hard way."

The woman looked up at the police. "He attacked us earlier on the beach," said the one who had missed Elliot, starting to roll him over onto his back and taking out a pair of handcuffs.

"One little guy, against three of you?" she asked, skepticism in her voice.

"He had friends," said the other constable. "And a knife."

The police car continued to give chase.

The two roads separated further, as the one on his right curved away until it was lost in the darkness. Elliot drove on, sleepy cottages soon on both sides of the road, including one at the end of another short driveway on the left, as he headed into the center of the village. He approached a four-way intersection, the police not far behind him.

Elliot turned right, passing a pond on his left and open grass on his right. The police car rounded the corner about ten car lengths behind him. Up ahead, a curving road branched off to the right where it ended at an intersection with another road, possibly the one that had originally been alongside the one he had taken when he had entered the village. On the current road, just beyond the turnoff, a straight, narrower road led off to the left. Past that, the current road curved around to the right and came to an end at another intersection with the same road where the first turnoff ended.

OOC,There's light coming from the entrance, but not from any of the windows above or on the side. It has a couple of stories above the ground floor which, combined with its description as an inn, implies that they have rooms where people can stay overnight. There are cars parked in the car park outside it, but no people are visible at the moment. You can't tell whether it's open or not, but there's no noise coming from it. It also has to be very late by now, as it was half past midnight before you fell asleep, so closing time for the pub itself must have passed.

The chase continued, and soon the surroundings became more rural. The left side of the road gave way to farmland, though there were still occasional buildings that whizzed past on the right. A driveway split off to the right, but it was clearly a dead end. Shortly past that, the road curved around to the left. As the curve started, another driveway shot off to the right, where it ended in a small cluster of buildings. Just beyond that, the road straightened out as it continued between two vast fields that stretched away as far as Elliot could see. A slimmer road branched off to the right, bordering the field on that side of the current road.

Elliot drove along a length of road that curved first to the left and then to the right, the only turnoffs dirt tracks that led into the fields. The police showed no signs of giving up the pursuit, and a glance at his fuel gauge showed that he had a little less than he had had at the outset. He had enough for a while longer, but would he run out of petrol before they ran out of patience? Eventually the road straightened again, and another, slightly narrower road branched off to the right while this one went straight ahead.

The police car almost turned off, but the driver corrected at the last second and continued following Elliot's car.

Before long, the road curved around to the right, while to the left a dirt trail led off in the opposite direction between two fields. The road continued on for a short stretch, where it bent left. At the curve, a couple of short driveways split off towards farm buildings. Beyond this point, a narrower paved road fed into this one from behind and to the right at a sharp angle, and the current road continued.

The two policemen tackled Elliot to the ground, wrestled his arms behind his back, and slapped a pair of handcuffs on him, making them painfully tight.

"Slippery little eel, ain'tcha?" said the first one, hauling Elliot to his feet.

"You gave us quite a run," said the second. "Why do they always run, Will? It's not like they ever escape."

Will shrugged. "Beats me, Jimmy. I guess that's just the way they are." The two of them frogmarched Elliot back through the woods.

"Boy is Sarge gonna be pissed at you when he wakes up."

"It's not my fault! This guy ducked at the wrong moment. Maybe he'll be less pissed because we caught him. I'm not looking forward to it, though."

They soon reached the road again, where they approached the police car. They tossed Elliot into the back seat and then locked him inside - these doors had their locks on the outside only. Then they got in the front seats.

"He made it as far as Darsham," said Will when the big church came into view. "We're just lucky he didn't keep going that way, or he'd have made it to the A12."

"Gotta watch this guy every second," said Jimmy, looking at Elliot in the rear view mirror. "He finks he's Harry Houdini or somefink. Seems pretty docile now, but I won't let me guard down."

Eventually they rolled up Monastery Hill on the way back to Dunwich, but instead of going into town they turned off into the short driveway leading up to the gate of the Lake estate. The man in the gatehouse raised the barrier for them when he saw the police car, and Will drove onto the property, pulling up in front of the house. He shut off the engine and got out of the car with his partner. The two of them opened one of the doors. "All right, come on out," said Will.

The cops pulled Elliot out of the back of the police car and marched him up the steps to the front door, where one of them knocked loudly. A few moments later, it was opened by a fishy-looking (and fishy-smelling) man in a black suit who carried a double-barreled shotgun. He looked familiar to Elliot, and he realized that he had seen him before. This was one of the men who had pursued him when he fled from the mansion after Elliot had rescued Dr. Kirby.

"You!" bellowed the man. Apparently the recognition was mutual.

"You know this guy, Mr. Griffin?" asked Jimmy.

"He's the intruder who broke in here yesterday and made off with our guest!"

"Well, he sure gets around, it seems," said Will. "No wonder he and his mates attacked us on the beach. I'm sure Mr. Lake will be even more interested in talking to him."

Griffin nodded. "I shall go awaken him at once. I'll send one of the maids to wake Miss VIctoria as well. Remain here."

The constables dragged Elliot into the spacious foyer. Various doors led off from it, and a grand stairway ascended from the center of the room, branching at a landing halfway up that led left and right to a balcony that ringed the grand entrance on three sides. Griffin shut the front door and went upstairs, heading left and vanishing down a hall.

Several minutes later, he returned, followed by a figure in a purple velvet robe. Whatever it was had green scaly skin and clawlike hands, along with bulging eyes, gills on its neck, and a bald scalp. It stood about five and a half feet tall, and the worst thing about it was that Elliot could tell that it used to be human.

Griffin and the fishman, presumably Lake, descended the stairs and approached Elliot. Lake glared at him with suppressed rage in his eyes. "So," he burbled, "you're the one who stole my bride and tied up my sister!"

"Who are you?" demanded Lake, leaning forward into Elliot's face and assaulting his nostrils with a fishy odor. "Who do you work for?" He waited, but Elliot responded only with stony silence. "You'll talk, one way or the other!"

"Don't start without me, dear brother," said a woman's voice from above. Lake turned to look up at the stairs, where Victoria Lake was descending from the right. She was wearing a revealing pink nightgown, and her unattractiveness made Elliot wish it weren't so revealing. There was no mistaking her developing piscine features. "I take it he hasn't said anything, Bertie. I think this needs a woman's touch." She finished coming down the staircase and walked up to Elliot with a toothy grin. "Hello again, stranger. It seems you left without introducing yourself the last time you were here."

The policemen patted Elliot down thoroughly and went through his pockets, removing his picks. "He's a bloody escape artist, he is," said Jimmy.

"He won't be escaping from us," said Bertie. "He'll be watched at all times."

"Let's keep him in the guest bedroom where Valerie had been staying," suggested Victoria. "I'll take the first watch."

Bertie nodded. "This way," he said, heading up the stairs and to the right, in the direction from which Victoria had come. The police frogmarched - literally, it seemed - Elliot upstairs after him, followed by Victoria and Griffin. The went down a long hall, around a corner to the right, and then around another corner to the left. This part of the mansion looked familiar to Elliot, and he recognized the dumbwaiter in the hall. They brought him into the bedroom where he had found Dr. Kirby.

"Bind him to the bed," ordered Victoria. "See how he likes it." The bobbies used the discarded length of chain to tie his legs together, then placed him on the bed and used their handcuffs to secure his arms to the rear bedposts while Griffin kept him covered with his shotgun.

"You may all leave us. Relieve me at dawn."

The four men departed and closed the door behind them, leaving Elliot alone with Victoria. She smiled at him. "You know, my brother is furious at you for stealing Valerie away," she said. "He's completely smitten with her. They were to be married tomorrow night, but you've ruined all that. Instead, he's going to sacrifice you to Mother Hydra. Unless..."

And if anyone does cause trouble for us, well, there is more to our family than you can see on the surface. Our kin are far more powerful than your criminal friends. No help is coming for you, and there won't even be enough time for a rescue attempt before Bertie sacrifices you. The only person who can stop him from doing that is me."

He shook his head, "Victoria, I know you aren't stupid. Is your brother's vengeance really worth the risk he would be bringing to your whole family?"

Either way, I'm not the one in charge. You could try talking to Mother, but I can't see her letting you go either. However, there is an alternative. I like you, I really do. If you agree to marry me, you'll be part of the family, and I can keep you alive. We've already got the church reserved for a wedding, and it would be a shame to let it go to waste. And we could have all sorts of fun tying each other up," she adds with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.

Elliot looks away for a minute and tries his best to blush. "This is pretty sudden can I think about it for a little while?"
She is obviously convinced her small group of spear wielding frogs are stronger than the UNIT, so without giving away too much he can't scare her into letting him go. He decides the next best course of action is to play along hoping a rescue is not far away, now that Unit knows he is alive.

"The fact that you're even considering it will be enough for me to keep Bertie off your back for a while, and few outsiders would. You'd be surprised how prejudiced some people can be. We may be different here in Dunwich, but we're still people deep down. We don't know each other well yet, it's true, but we have time to get to know each other better. Why don't you tell me about yourself? You can start with your name. I just realized I don't even know it."

Elliot's restraints kept him secured to the bed.

"Oh, nothing of the sort!" said Victoria. "Mother Hydra isn't a monster at all, and she only has one head. Those old myths distort the truth so. I've never met Mother Hydra, but my mother has. She's a High Priestess to Mother Hydra. Mother Hydra is an ancient ancestor of my mother's side of the family. As High Priestess, she's the best one to answer your questions about her." She picked up a bell and rang it, and it gave off a tinkling sound. A minute later, there was a knock on the door, and Victoria opened it slightly.

"Yes, Miss Victoria?" came a woman's voice from the other side.

"Margery, please be a dear and send a message to Mother asking her to come. She really ought to meet my new boyfriend."

"Right away, Miss Victoria." Footsteps moved off down the hall, and Victoria closed the door.

"All right," said Victoria, opening the door again and calling out into the hall. "Never mind, Margery. Elliot isn't feeling up to visitors yet. Perhaps in the evening. But do fetch some medical supplies, please." She closed the door again and returned her attention to Elliot with a smile. "You're right, you do need your rest. You could use some medical attention too. Those boys sure played rough with you. I'll do what I can, but I'm no expert. Perhaps you'd rather have a professional look you over."

Elliot now had a new appreciation for what Dr. Valerie Kirby had endured during her captivity in this very room. Like him, she hadn't known whether rescue would come, and she'd had plenty of time to dread her eventual fate. At least he had managed to get her out of here, but now he was in the same position. All he could do was keep hoping.

A few minutes later, there was a knock on the door. Victoria opened it and took a small first aid kit from someone on the other side. "Thank you, Margery," said Victoria before closing the door. Then she came over to the bed where Elliot lay bound. She took a little bottle of iodine out of the first aid kit and started to put some on his cuts, but it only caused intense pain. Mercifully, he passed out.

Some time later, Elliot came to his senses. Sunlight was streaming in through the curtains covering the window, and a blonde woman in a white nurse's uniform was leaning over him, doing an excellent job of treating him. He was feeling a lot better now, but her fishy features made him feel a little queasy. She bore some resemblance to the receptionist at the Ship Inn, but she was taller. Victoria was also in the room, sitting on an armchair.

"I could give you a sponge bath," said Annabel to Elliot. Then she glanced back at Victoria. "Unless you'd rather she do it?"

There was a knock at the door, and Victoria answered it. A dark-haired woman in her mid-thirties wearing a maid's outfit entered carrying a tea tray. The Dunwich look was even more pronounced in her, but Elliot was used to these freaks by now. The tray contained a pitcher of steaming tea, three teacups, and three biscuits with butter. She only had three with my late father Josiah. My older sister Emilia was born in 1946, Bertie in 1948, and me in 1950. Bertie has a son named Joshua who is eighteen; his mother died in childbirth. It seemed that Bertie would never love again, but that changed when he met Valerie. Anyway, Father met Mother in the South Pacific in 1945, on his way home from the war. He had stopped off on an island he had liberated from the Japanese in 1944, Ponape I believe it was called. He and Mother fell in love on the spot."

My mother's people are of this world, and in fact have been around longer than humans. We have a natural affinity for Cthulhu because of our shared love of the sea. We worship him and make offerings, and he grants us power. Mother is the most powerful of our congregation, but I've learned a few things myself. Would you care for a demonstration?"

Annabel looked out the window. "It's getting on towards evening," she said. "I'd better go home and prepare dinner. Call if you need anything, Victoria."

"I will," said Victoria. "Good night, Annabel. Margery, please return the tray to the kitchen."

"Yes, Miss Victoria," said the maid, collecting the tray and the empty teacups and following the nurse out of the room. Victoria closed the door and smiled at Elliot. "I'm not offended. It makes sense to insist on proof. Seeing the power of Cthulhu will help you realise the benefits of serving him. Or rather, hearing it."

Victoria opened her mouth, and a haunting song emerged from her throat. It brought images to Elliot's mind of the sea, of sunken cities and hints of strange undersea creatures.

Suddenly, it felt as though a veil was lifted from Elliot's eyes, and he saw Victoria in a new light. He looked past what she was and what she looked like, and he saw the amazing person deep within. In a hostile environment, she had shown him mercy and protected him from her brother's vengeance. She was everything he had ever wanted in a woman, she was about his age...and she wanted to marry him.

"Oh my Victoria, I never.." he lets it trails off. His hand reaches out and strokes her face. "But your brother, he scares me. And if my group shows up, I'm afraid for you."

The handcuff chain stopped Elliot from moving his arm more than a few inches. Victoria smiled sweetly at him. "I can protect you from him," she said. "And if your friends show up, I think we can handle whatever they can throw at us. I'm not as delicate as I look, but I'm pleased that you care so much about me." She looked thoughtful. "Or is there something about them or their capabilities you haven't told me?"

He pulls on the chain even though it hurts his wrist. "I'm not supposed to say, but its government, and they don't mess around. But if I tell you, they won't ever let me go. Right now I can resign and we can be together." Elliot thinks for a minute, "lets run, just you and me. I promise I won't leave your side. Whatever you want to do? I know some secluded places up the coast. Get a small cottage just the 2 of us." He smiles at her, but a sadness overcomes him, because she doesn't trust him. He hasn't given her a reason to trust him.
He pauses for a minute. "I'll be honest with you, I've been stalling hoping a rescue operation is underway, but if they do I don't see any good outcomes. Either they are very successful, and free me, kill you or worse yet, capture you for some experiments. In any of those scenarios I'll never see you again. I can't stand the thought of being without you. Or they fail, and your brother will take his wrath out on me, and again, we can't be together."

"If they fail, my brother won't do a thing to you," Victoria said. "I'll make sure of that. You're part of the family now. If the government comes down on us and things go against us, we can flee by sea. But I've lived here all my life, and I don't want to leave if I don't have to. This is my home...our home. I don't think even the government can defeat us, especially now that we know they're coming and will be ready for them. What I showed you is just a taste of the power of Cthulhu. We can sink ships, drown men, call forth all sorts of allies." She took out a handcuff key and unlocked Elliot's cuffs, then unwrapped the chains from his legs. "We're not going to need these any more. I trust you now, and I know that you won't run away. I love you, Elliot." She leaned forward to kiss him.

The door opened when her lips were just a few inches from his. Bertie Lake stood on the other side, and he cleared his throat, which made a sort of bubbly sound. Victoria straightened up, blushing.

"Why is he unchained?" snarled Bertie.

"It's okay, brother. Elliot is going to join our family. I have sung to him, and he loves me. He has agreed to marry me tomorrow."

Bertie's expression lightened. "Oh. I...I am happy for you, Victoria."

"I'm sorry you lost Valerie, Bertie. I'm sure Elliot is sorry that he took her from you. Please don't hold it against him."

Elliot doesn't know what Bert is thinking, but he stands up and puts his hands on Victoria's shoulders. "I did help Valarie escape sir, but she didn't love you. I do love Victoria, and I will marry her if you will give your blessing." he pauses for a second,"But all that can wait. I expect an attack on this house anytime. "I would have gotten Valerie to love me," said Bertie. "But at least my sister has found true love. Who is going to attack us?"

"Elliot told me that his friends are from the government," said Victoria.

"Well, they know about the manor," said Bertie, "but it is the most defensible building in Dunwich, and we can lay traps and ambushes. They've also been through the caves, so they know about them as well, but Rover is more than capable of defending them. If they attack from the sea, we can deal with that. If they come by land, that may be more difficult. Rover could handle anything short of a tank, but he can't be in two places at once."

"Mother needs to know about this. We may need to hold a ritual tonight to get some more powerful help, and for that we'll also need Father Stewart."

Elliot took a step closer to Bert. He had gotten a bit use to the looks, but he wasn't like Victoria. But he was the brother of his love. He had to make peace here.
"Sir, there maybe another way. If they attack, it may not be with force. I just don't know. But the primary purpose would be to retrieve me. But I'm not going anywhere. I'm here with Victoria and you. If I can contact them, we might be able to avoid bloodshed completely. I have friends on that side. I don't want anyone hurt." He puts his hand out as a peace offering. "Please let me try sir."

"I have a number to call. I'm not 100% sure how to convince them, but they will be sure to trace the call." He pauses then continues, " I should call from somewhere else, maybe the Inn. Just to let them know I'm ok, and no need to launch any rescue parties." Elliot thinks about it for a second more, "that should buy us some time anyway." He smiles back at Victoria, "the two of us could go call and get to know each other a bit better."

"Yes, that sounds like a good idea," said Victoria.

"All right," said Bertie with some reluctance. "Have Griffin take you both into town in the Rolls. We'll be able to hear both sides of the conversation with your friends. "Thank you, although my father did the hardest bit," said Bertie. "I just inherited it from him."

"Griffin's the butler," said Victoria, "and he's usually down in the entry hall. If not, we'll ring the bell to summon him. We'll bring Smith too. He's the chauffeur. It doesn't hurt to be too careful, in case they attack while we're out and about."

Victoria led Elliot back to the main stairs and down to the foyer, where Griffin was standing near the front doors.

"Griffin, we need to go into town, to the inn, to place a telephone call we don't want traced back here," said Victoria. "We'll need Smith to drive." She handed him back his shotgun.

"Very good, Miss Victoria," said Griffin. "Smith should still be in the carriage house. We should go now while it's still light out."

Griffin led Elliot and Victoria out the front doors, down the steps, and across the grounds to the carriage house. Inside, they found Smith lounging and smoking a cigarette. He had been one of the men who, with Griffin, had chased him when he was fleeing with Dr. Kirby yesterday.

"Smith, we need you to take us into town, to the Ship Inn," said Victoria.

"Yes, Miss," said the chauffeur. He opened the back door for her, and she got inside, motioning for Elliot to join her.

"Good evening, Annie," said Victoria. "I'd like you to meet my fiance, Elliot. We're to be married tomorrow."

"Oh, how wonderful! Is it to be a double wedding then?"

"I suppose you haven't heard. My brother's bride-to-be got cold feet."

Annie's eyes turned down. "I'm sorry to hear that. Are you here to reserve a room? I'd have thought you'd rather stay at the mansion."

"Oh, we will. Elliot just needs to place a trunk call, but he can't place it from the mansion, or it might be traced back."

"All right." Annie slid the telephone across the counter.

Only Victoria and Annie were in the room at the moment, and neither of them looked to be armed. Nothing else grabbed Elliot's attention. The lobby looked just as it had before.

Elliot called UNIT, and once he gave his name he was connected quickly to Brigadier Crichton. "Webb, what the devil happened to you?" he asked. "We sent someone to pick you up at the Cliff House Inn this morning, but you were gone. The desk clerk said you'd fled after a scuffle with the police. Are you all right? Where are you now?"

They are not dangerous to anyone as long as you leave them be. If you are planning some sort of rescue mission, I recommend standing down. I'd advise putting this group on the watch list. Elliot could almost hear the Brigadier frowning. "They weren't being very peaceful when they abducted Dr. Kirby and tried to force her to marry one of them against her wiill!" he barked. "I think the whole thing with Dr. Kirby was a big misunderstanding. One of them got a little carried away, is all. Not all of them are like that. I just don't want this to turn into a big blood bath. If you are not planning an attack thats fine, I was just worried you were. If you are, they feel confident they can handle anything you can throw at them, which means I don't have all the intel and you probably don't either."
Elliot glances a worried look at Victoria. "Rest assured I'm not brain washed, sir. I still know where my allegiance and oath are at. I just think a more diplomatic approach is the correct course of action here. If that is what you were planning, I can help faciliate that, sir."

"You've told them about us?!" roared the Brigadier, possibly loud enough for the ladies in the room to hear. "Sounds like you've forgotten your oath already. Don't you understand? They're planning to breed us out of existence! Dr. Kirby termed it genetic warfare. They're playing a long game, but we can't let them proceed. We have to nip it in the bud before it becomes too widespread to manage!"

Elliot was worried, trying to think back to what he had said to Victoria. It wasn't much, but maybe still too much. He better try and cover his tracks. "No sir. All I said to Victoria was that my friends might come to get me, and she said even if the whole English army was trying it would not be enough. But if its like you said, a long game, then maybe we should do a bit more investigating first instead of some hysterical witness."

"Victoria Lake?" said the Brigadier. "So you're on a first name basis with her. And Dr. Kirby is anything but hysterical. She's given this some serious thought, and she knows what she's talking about. This has been going on for forty years, and that's too long already. I can only hope that it's not already too late, and that there aren't Dunwiches all over the world. They may think they can resist, but we'll show them. The English Army!" He guffawed. "Doesn't she know it's the British Army? We've got Scots too. We can bring overwhelming force against them. There might not even be a fight, if they're smart enough to surrender. Now, what useful intelligence have you picked up? We need to know about enemy strength and disposition, and any...unconventional assets they can bring to bear."

Looking over at Victoria, Elliot smiles. He loves her and doesn't want her to think he is betraying her, but he needs to convince the general at the same time, who's side he is on. "I have lots of that sir, but not nearly enough detail. I need more time." He then pauses for a second like he is listening, then continues. "Well they have a city under the sea, and can sink ships easily. There race has been around for thousands of years and worships some god named Caathuula. Well that's not the right pronunciation, I'm still working on that. In the 40's they made contact with us hoping to share our world peacefully. They have some incredible gifts you can't imagine, and their singing is to die for sir. You should hear it." Elliot's mind wonders back to the song and the visions.

"I'll have to take your word for that one," said the Brigadier. "They may say they come in peace, but don't believe it for a second. They murdered Raymond MacIntyre, and they roughed you up pretty good. I don't know what they've done to you, but snap out of it, man! Now, do you have anything else useful to tell me?"

"Sir, Victoria has done nothing wrong. If she says she doesn't know anything about Raymond, then I believe her."

After hearing the last part, "1954, what, I wasn't even born yet." Elliot tries to calm down, maybe this whole phone call was a mistake.

"Sir, if I may. You haven't said anything that requires an immediate response. I still recommend survellance with myself and possibly an outreach program. We should be trying to understand our neighbors better, not fight with them." Elliot smiled at that last bit. Surely the Brigadere would see things his way.

"What if I arrange a meeting between you and Victoria's brother and we can all sit down over tea and talk things out?" Elliot smiled at Victoria, but it worried him he still couldn't bring himself to say Bert's name outloud. Just thinking of him, still gave Elliot the shivers.

This is a no win scenario for you guys. Your best bet is to run. Go to your cities under the sea and wait this out. It might take a couple years, but they'll forget about you and move on. Elliot looked deeply in her eyes, hoping she could see he was telling the truth. "I really don't know what they have planned, but they can bring any thing you can imagine. How are you going to fight a cruise missle, or a bomber? Fully trained military? Since they don't really know what they are walking into, they'll play it careful and go full overkill. That's why I've been trying to get you away from the house. They could be on their way already. I really don't want you to go back there." He looks around like he is grasping for an idea. "Lets go down South. There is is the submerged city there. Lets just go there for a day or two till things blow over."

Victoria placed her hands on Elliot's shoulders. "Really, you're being afraid for no reason, dear," she said. "The military is not going to bomb one of their own cities full of civilians and tourists. And we are quite a force to be reckoned with ourselves. We have forces you cannot begin to imagine at our disposal. We will win the battle, and the war too. Talk to Mother when she comes over this evening. She can allay your fears."

"Alright, lets go talk to your mother." Elliot decides he can be more help back at the mansion. "If my friend calls back, can you transfer him to the house?" he asks.

"I can have the operator do that," said Annie. "Take care of yourselves."

"Good evening, Annie," said Victoria. She took Elliot by the hand and led him back to the Rolls Royce. "Home, Smith," she said once they had got into the back seat again. The chauffeur drove out of the car park and back down Monastery Hill. "Mother will come visit us at the mansion after it gets dark. It wouldn't do for her to be seen by anyone. In the meantime, we can eat supper with most of the rest of the family."

"That sounds good. No offense but most of your family too me some time to get use to. I guess I'm a bit nervous to meet your mother." Elliot says looking down at his feet. The thought of meeting Victories mother terrifies him, but if he can glean some useful info about her, he has to do it. "What should I call her?"

"I think you should call her Mother," said Victoria. "She's going to be your mother too, so you may as well get started now. Her official title is High Priestess, but I don't think there's any need to be formal. Her name is Y'Hali."

"Mother huh? Not sure I feel that comfortable with that, but I'll give it a try. What is the plan Victoria? I don't plan to leave your side for the next 12 hours at least." Elliot smiled but he is worried and it shows.

Victoria smiled and squeezed Elliot's hand. "Good," she said. "I want to be with you, whatever happens. The plan is stil being decided, and Mother will be the one to make the ultimate decisions. Father Stewart is going to call up something powerful to aid in our defense, I know that. We'll also likely have many of Mother's people underwater and just offshore, ready to respond to any threats. Rover and Emilia can help guard the temple in the caves."

The luxury car reached the mansion's gate, and the guards opened it to let them inside. Smith drove into the carriage house and parked the Rolls.

"Father Stewart is the local priest," said Victoria, getting out of the car and offering her hand to Elliot. "He runs the St. James Church, the only one in Dunwich that's not underwater. It's an Anglican church, but of course Father Stewart teaches aspects of our religion, only he disguises it subtly. Only the inner circle know about Great Cthulhu." She chuckled at Elliot's question about Rover. "No, it's not a dog. It's a...well, it's an enormous blobby creature called a Shoggoth. Usually they're black and oily, but this one's an albino. It reminded me of the giant white sphere from The Prisoner that was called Rover, so I gave it that name, and it kind of stuck."

"Thank you, I'm quite sure," said Victoria. "Rover is extremely fearsome. I've only seen it once, and it freaked me out when I did. That thing is humongous! Bullets won't do much to it, and it can engulf and crush people to death easily. And our priest is powerful. He can even call up one of Great Cthulhu's spawn. Nothing the government can bring to bear can withstand that. We also have command over the creatures of the sea, and the waters themselves. Anyone who tries to attack us will regret it. Come, let us go into the house."

"Oh, we have servants for that," said Victoria with a light laugh as she led the way to the front doors, followed by Griffin. Smith remained in the carriage house. "Don't worry, just come to the dining room and meet the rest of the family. They should be gathering for dinner soon, if they haven't already." She looked up at the darkening sky, which was covered with clouds. "Looks like rain."

Griffin strode forward and opened the doors, allowing everyone else to enter before he came inside and shut the doors behind them. He handed the shotgun to Victoria. "You should be armed at all times, Miss Victoria," he said. "Who knows what tonight will bring? I still have my pistol."

"Thank you, Griffin, quite sensible," said Victoria. She led the way to a door on the right.

Victoria led Elliot through the door into a dining room. Bertie Lake was already seated at the head of the table. On his right side was a young man in his late teens with normal-looking features, apart from slightly oversized eyes. Place settings had been laid out, but there was no food on the table yet.

"Ah, you're back," said Bertie. "Mr. Webb, I'd like you to meet my son, Joshua. Joshua, this chap is going to be your uncle."

"Pleased to meet you, sir," said Joshua.

So far there were only the four of them at the table, but there was also a liveried servant standing in the corner behind Elliot, not far from the door through which he had entered, apparently waiting in case anyone needed anything. He had the usual look shared by many of the residents in Dunwich.

"Please, have a seat," said Bertie. "Soup should be on in a few minutes." Victoria sat down at Bertie's left hand and patted the seat next to her.

Then back to Bert, "So Bert, tell me you have a plan besides staying here. Victoria is convinced she has nothing to worry about." Elliot smiles and takes her hand. "I really hope you don't feel the same way."

"I didn't say," said Bertie. "It's fish soup. The sea always gives us a plentiful harvest. We do have a plan for our defense, and anything you can tell us about the danger we face would be helpful. Mother will work out all the details. She didn't get to be thousands of years old without gaining quite a bit of wisdom. She'll join us as soon as it's dark, which will most likely be sooner rather than later, judging by how cloudy it appears through the windows. There is danger that some of our people will be killed, yes, but we shall prevail in the end. Nobody can hope to defeat our power. Why, what do you know about what we're up against that would warrant worry?"

"My only concern is for Victoria. As for what you are up against, I can't really say. I don't know how serious they are taking your little band but they are well aware of your secret. They won't stop Bert, you might win the battle coming, but you can't win the war. Bert, this is madness don't you see that." Elliot tries to stay calm. "Don't you see if they come by sea and you win, then they'll come by land, and if you win, they'll come by air. And if that fails, they'll bomb you. Victoria doesn't think they will, but I disagree. You don't understand how determined my people are."

"Well, if they come by sea," said Bertie, "they will lose for certain. They won't do so well by land or air either. And I can't see them being able to get away with bombing an English city. It would take some time for us to organise an evacuation even if we did decide to pull up stakes. Even if it looks like we will lose the war, I'm sure we'll win the first battle. Ultimately, the decision is Mother's anyway."

"Then perhaps there is hope for peace," said Bertie. "Mother has only ever wanted peace between our two peoples. She wanted us to be in a stronger position before we reveal ourselves to the world, but we may not have any choice. I'll make the suggestion to her, but the final decision is hers."

"Who would we be negotiating with?" asked Victoria, looking doubtful. "With that man you spoke to on the telephone? He didn't sound very reasonable to me. I could hear him shouting."

Emma, the girl Elliot had seen working in the kitchen the other day, entered the dining room carrying a tray with bowls of soup. She nearly dropped it when she saw and recognized him, but she managed to keep it steady after a bit of juggling, with only a little soup sloshing over the edges of the bowls onto the tray.

"Yes, Miss Victoria," said Emma, serving the soup. "Just don't tell Mrs. Plodgett. She's like to spit in his food if she finds out. She was even more cross than I was." The maid hurried back through the door by which she entered.

The soup did taste like fish, and it was delicious. Whether that was because of Mrs. Plodgett's cooking skills, or because Elliot hadn't eaten in over a day, or some combination of the two, he could not say. Before he knew it, the soup was done and Emma brought in the main course: lobster drenched in drawn butter.

Through the windows, Elliot could see that it was now dark outside, and it had begun to rain. Droplets streaked the windowpanes.

Elliot's hunger was more than he could take. The soup only served to wet his appetite. He dove into the lobster trying to restrain himself but finding it hard to do so. Sometime while cracking a claw open he comments on the rain, 'Looks like it could be a storm coming in."

The lobster was even better than the soup had been, and Elliot was able to eat his fill. The whole family was tucking in.

Victoria glanced out the window, where the rain was coming down hard and the sky was darker still. "Yes, it's already pouring," she said. Just at that moment, there was a knock at the front doors. "That must be Mother. Griffin will show her in."

Elliot finishes his food and prepares himself. He isn't sure what to expect, but he knew it was going to be bad. He usually didn't get nervous, but the butterflies in his stomach along with the rich buttered lobster wasn't sitting well. He felt sick to his stomach. He forced himself to calm his nerves and took Victoria's hand. "I'm not so sure this is a good idea," he leans over and whispers in her ear.

Victoria gave Elliot's hand a reassuring squeeze. "Don't worry, you'll be fine," she whispered back. "Mother will like you, I'm sure of it."

Griffin opened the doors from the foyer. "High Priestess Y'Hali!" he announced, then stepped aside to allow a female Sea Devil in a string mesh vest to waddle into the dining hall. She was immense, over eight feet tall, and extremely muscular, stronger than any man he had ever seen.

"Good evening, Mother," said Bertie. "I'm glad you could join us."

"She's my mother," whispers Victoria, putting an arm around him. "She can have that effect on people sometimes."

Y'Hali stared at Elliot, which only made him more terrified. He was only barely clinging onto the shreds of his mind. The only thing that kept him partially sane was the stray thought that mothers-in-law are supposed to be terrifying. "Good evening," she said. "Is this the one you wish to marry, Victoria?"

"Yes, Mother. His name is Elliot."

"Your reaction isn't as bad as some," said Y'Hali, sitting down at the opposite end of the table from Bertie. "Good evening, my children. It is good to be with you again." The servant came forward and filled her plate with lobster, wihle the butler backed out of the room, closing the doors behind him. Y'Hali cracked open a claw and sucked the insides dry, which couldn't help but disturb Elliot further, especially since she was studying him the whole time. "If you want to marry my daughter, you had best start by telling me all about yourself and what brings you to Dunwich."

OOC,In Elliot's case, probably not. Since he was a street criminal before he joined UNIT, he could simply go on pretending to be one. He would continue to tell his family and friends whatever he told them he did before he joined UNIT. This would be more plausible than him actually having a respectable job. You're free to make up whatever cover you'd like.

"We shall protect Victoria," Y'hali said. "I know you love my daughter. I love her as well. We will not start a war. We will not fire the first shot. If the humans are so foolish as to do so, we shall teach them a lesson. We will save some of the attackers alive, and we will give them our terms. They shall be the aggressors, and we shall be the victors. They shall agree, or they shall suffer worse. The Royal Navy does not want to start a war with my people, not if it has any sense. It is not what it was during World War Two. Britain relies on its nuclear arsenal and has mothballed many of its ships. Further, this island cannot produce enough food to support itself. Britain is wholly reliant upon the shipping of food from overseas. If it persists in waging war against us, those ships will not reach its shores. We can create a tighter stranglehold than German U-boat commanders ever dreamed of, if need be. They shall starve until they relent."

Victoria sighed and squeezed Elliot's hand.

"Yes, I'd be glad to have you protecting my daughter," said Y'Hali. "I know what it's like to lose children, and I won't take any chances with the ones I have now. Before we came to Dunwich, my people, the Deep Ones, lived on an island in the South Pacific called Ponape. Some left to go to America with a Captain Obed Marsh back in the mid-19th century. They settled in a town called Innsmouth in Massachusetts where they lived at peace with humans for nearly a century, but the American government got wind of their presence and raided it. My people were killed where they were found, as were any children they had with the humans who resisted. Those they captured alive were taken to secret concentration camps. I do not know what happened to them there, but I am sure it was terrible. However, many of my people escaped their dragnet, into the sea. They still live in the undersea city of Y'ha-nthlei. The Americans depth charged it, but their bombs were largely ineffective. They presumed it was destroyed, but they were mistaken.

"Those of us who remained at Ponape, including myself, intermarried with the humans who lived on the island and had children by them. They would live and grow on the island until they transformed fully, at which time they would join us and live in the sea. However, during World War Two the Japanese invaded and occupied Ponape. They slaughtered all of our children living on the island and stole all of the gold." She lowered her head in obvious sorrow. "I thirsted for revenge, but I had to restrain myself. Had we gone ashore and attacked the Japanese, many of us would have been slain by their machine guns, rifles, and swords. The Japanese are fierce fighters who ask and give no quarter. But we Deep Ones are a patient lot, and we can live forever as long as we are not killed by violence. I did not get to be over three thousand years old by being stupid. My plan was to wait until the Japanese garrison was withdrawn from the island in troopships after the war and then sink those ships.

"However, Captain Josiah Lake and the Royal Marines arrived first. They stormed the beaches of Ponape and fought a difficult battle against the Japanese, but they prevailed thanks to Josiah's courage and brilliance. They avenged our children and wiped out the Japanese to a man; the Japanese were notorious for refusing to surrender no matter what. After the battle, they searched the island. They found papers on the Japanese officer's body detailing everything they had done and found on Ponape, and those led them to a mass grave where the Japanese had buried the islanders. Their possessions that had not been deemed of any value had been buried with them, and Josiah found a scroll in an ancient script wrapped around some unusual stones. He did not know what it meant at the time, but by the end of the war he had deciphered the text. It contained instructions for summoning forth Deep Ones from the sea, of which the stones were a vital component.

"After the war, Josiah returned to Ponape on his way back home to Dunwich, where he carried out the ritual. I heard the call and came ashore with others of my people. I loved him from the first. He told me of what he had done on Ponape, and I knew that he was the one for me. We conceived my daughter Emilia that very night. Bertie and Victoria were born years later, after my people had followed my new husband back to Dunwich."

Elliot forces the courage to try once more, "Mother, the story is fascinating, but I think it only proves the point I was trying to make. Twice before your kind have lost to men with guns. And that was back in the 40's and before that. Since then my people have made an art form of killing. Our guns are much more accurate and deadly than they ever were during world war two." He took a second to let that set in. "I can understand and admire your desire to dig in and hold your ground. That you feel this island country is your best chance to make a stand. But I'm telling you, if you stand up to this and fight, it will never end. You may win this battle, but you will never win the war. How many will have to die before you withdraw into the sea. Does your son Bert, have to die? Does..." he had to pause for a second, then recomposed himself, "Does Victoria have to die? I ask you, is this the battle you want to hang the hopes of your people on?"
Elliot pauses again letting the questions sink in.

"i will not allow any more of my children to die," said Y'Hali. "If we flee now, though, we will never be safe. The humans will continue to hunt us, even in the depths of the sea. Technology is improving, as you said, and mankind will continue plumbing the depths until we have nowhere left to run. We must make a stand somewhere, before it is too late. If they do not attack us here, we can continue to live in peace with humanity, so that our children and their children will be one. If they do attack, we shall teach them a lesson, one they shall never forget. Then we can negotiate from a position of strength and gain a lasting peace. My decision is final. I will make sure that VIctoria is safe, don't worry. She will be at sea with me, and you will come with us as well."

"I've thought of that," said Y'Hali. "While your friends stole all of the diving suits from Horsham's, there are still some snorkels left. One of them will suffice while you're in shallow water."

"I have already developed gills," said Victoria to Elliot, "so I can breathe underwater without equipment. And I'm an excellent swimmer. I'll be happy to guide you, darling." She smiled at him.

"I'm glad you'll be coming with me too, dear," said Victoria. "I've got a swimsuit I can change into. Bertie, would you mind if Elliot borrows a pair of your swim trunks? He's a bit smaller than you, but they should still fit okay."

"Of course," said Bertie. He waved to the servant, who left through the doors to the foyer.

"Great!" Victoria took Elliot by the hand. "Come on, let's go upstairs."

"Remember, no hanky-panky until after the wedding," said Y'Hali.

Victoria rolled her eyes. "Yes, Mother."

Victoria and Elliot went up the grand staircase, following the servant, though he went to the opposite wing of the mansion. Victoria led Elliot down the hall and around the bends until they reached his guest room. "The servant will be along with your trunks in a minute," she said. "I shall be in my own room, changing."

The room looked much as Elliot had seen it when he had rescued Dr. Kirby, except now he was alone here. There was no telephone in this room, and the only thing here that looked like it could be used as a weapon was the broken length of chain, which wasn't exactly concealable.

OOC,Trying to decide what to do. How in love am I? To the point I will not leave? or is it, I can better save her by making it back to the UNIT forces and try and get the attack postponed at least? I'm trying to roleplay this as best possible, just not sure how strong the love is supposed to be.

OOC,You're hopelessly in love, and it's the strongest you've ever felt. You don't like being without her even for a short time, but you could withstand temporary separation if it's for her sake. You couldn't bear to leave Dunwich without her, however, as there's a chance that UNIT could launch an attack before you got back to them. Even if you did get there in time, you could easily fail to stop the attack. If you could get her to leave with you, that's another matter.

ooc, that is what I figured. I was debating trying to flee and wanted to make sure that wasn't really an option without her.
Elliot goes into the washroom and splashes water on his face. "What the hell are you doing man?" he says to himself. He thought of escaping, the dumb waiter was across the hall, down to the kitchen and out to the cars. He knew the way out now. But thoughts of Victoria kept him from moving. What if she died while he was gone? Could he live with himself? He knew deep down he couldn't. He couldn't leave, he had to stay until he could convince her to go with him. He had half hoped the attack would take place while they were at the hotel, but it hadn't come.

Maybe he was wrong, maybe an attack wasn't coming, but he he knew that was wrong. Leaving would be good. Into the ocean, but he knew if they did that he would be stuck with these monsters the rest of his life. No, he wanted HER, but not all that baggage. Mother, Dagon, monsters, ancient religions, cities under the sea. No thank you. He needed to talk to Victoria again.

He took a lok in the mirror, trying to clean himself up enough to persuade her. He opened the door, looked out and headed down to Victoria's door and knocked lightly.

When Elliot entered the hall, the servant was returning with a pair of blue swim trunks, which he handed to Elliot without a word before walking away.

"Just a moment," said Victoria from within her room. A few seconds later, she opened the door. She wore a black one-piece bathing suit, and she was just adjusting one of the shoulder straps. It made her look even more attractive, sleek and streamlined. The piscine features that made her kin so hideous were beautiful on her. She looked like a mermaid. "I'm ready when you are, darling."

Elliot slips into the room, shutting the door, "oh wow, you are beautiful. How come you can be so wonderful, and the rest of your family..." he stops. "I can't stay with your family Victoria. Please do not make me do this. Let us go now, move over to safer ground away from here. I heard what mother said, and it did not convince me. Do you think we have not grown stronger over the years? Man is really good at one thing, creating weapons that destroy." Elliot looks in her eyes and kisses her deeply. "You are everything I have ever dreamed of, I won't lose you now."

Elliot goes and takes about a minute to slip into the swimsuit, keeping his shirt on and returns. He brings what clothes he has. They are blood stained and pretty nasty by now. He just gives a quick knock and walks into Victoria's room again. "I could probably go for a clean shirt and some water shoes if you have any?" he asks.

Victoria glanced back over her shoulder and grinned as she led Elliot down the corridor to the foyer. She flagged down the servant and sent him to collect a shirt, then descended the stairs with Elliot in tow. Y'Hali and Bertie stood waiting below.

"Ah, good," said Y'Hali. "When we're ready to leave, we'll use the secret tunnel beneath the ruins. That will take us to the sea."

"Good, let's go," said Y'Hali. She opened the front doors, revealing darkness outside. Sheets of rain fell down from above, spattering the stairs. A loud boom sounded, followed shortly by a flash of lightning that briefly illuminated the mansion's grounds.

"It wasn't us," said Victoria. "Sometimes storms just happen in Dunwich."

"Or it could be that Soames," said Y'Hali. "He is reputed to have some power over the weather. That might account for the unusual fog last night too."

"Perhaps it was a mistake to let him live," said Bertie. "His brother killed my father, and he is no different."

"Killing Virgil Soames would have cost more of my people their lives. His brother killed quite a few, and if he is even half the wizard Edward was, our losses still would have been heavy. When you can live forever, it gives you a better perspective. Death is something best avoided. As long as the truce holds, he may coninue breathing. He'll be dead in fifty years anyway."

"But he has broken the truce!"

"How? A little fog, a little rain? Even if he is responsible for that, it is hardly a hostile act."

"He may aid our enemies when they attack! We should kill him tonight!"

"I'll take that under consideration." Y'Hali embraced her son. "Father Stewart should be along shortly with your protector. Do not do anything rash while we are away."

"Yes, Mother." Bertie lowered his head.

"Come, let's go. The rain is getting in." Y'Hali released Bertie and led Victoria and Elliot outside, closing the doors behind them. They went down the drive to the gate, which the guard raised for them, letting them out onto Monastery Hill. They hiked northeast for a short distance. Elliot could see the Priory Cottage ahead to the left, and the ruins were on the right, just across the road from it.

"That's Priory Cottage, where Virgil Soames lives," said Victoria, pointing it out. "I see a light on in one of the windows."

"It is dark, and the clouds cover the sky," said Y'Hali. "He will not see us."

"We have a saying, 'God loves the infantry', if this is natural, I think it will be to your benefit today if a battle does come. Or it may delay it." Hearing what they said about Soames, Elliot felt an oblication to try and make this right. "He didn't aid me so much as just wanted me out of his house. He knew I wasn't going to leave, but after he put up the fog it gave me the chance to go. Yea, it helped me, but his intent was to just get me out of there so he wouldn't have to have a confrontation with the family. I hope you understand the difference mother."

After hearing it out loud, he isn't sure if it helped or hurt the old man's cause. And Bert was getting a body guard? Was that the Shaggoth mentioned? Things were getting crazy, but if he didn't play along for now he'd lose Victoria forever. Maybe if he could get the shotgun out of the bag and force her to come with him, but he would never hurt her and she knows it. But once he goes into the ruins, he may never come out again.
"Here let me carry that for you," Elliot offers to carry the waterproof bag, trying to keep it casual as a gentlemanly thing to do.

"Thank you, dear," said Victoria, letting Elliot take the oilskin sack.

"You know Soames's intentions?" said Y'Hali with a skeptical look. "Can you read his mind? Or did he perhaps tell you why he raised the fog? A man can lie, you know. You have confirmed that it was he that did it, and that he has that sort of power, at least. It is not a violation of the truce, technically, though it does dance about the edges. There is no need to worry, in any case. We will not be the first to break the truce. I only told Bertie that I would consider it to keep him from taking matters into his own hands. Soames shall be watched, however. And you're right, the storm will help us. Come, let us go down to the sea." She led the way past the gate and into the ruins.

Elliot took the bag. This made him feel a little better, but he was no better with a shotgun than a knife. But at least it was something. After listening to mother he was afraid he had made the situation worse for Soames who had only helped him. "He told me I had to leave, and then the fog rolled in, and he said he made it. Whether he did or not, I have no idea. It seemed convenient is all I can say." He left it at that, hoping that would explain his other ramblings.

As they approached the ruins, Elliot had thoughts of making a sprint for Soames place. With the shotgun he could probably make it, but he looked back at Victoria and knew he couldn't be without her. Somewhere in the back of his mind a small piece was screaming, "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!!" But that was quickly pushed aside for more rational thoughts...

The three of them approached the stone covering the entrance to the caves. If Elliot hadn't known what to look for, he wouldn't have noticed it. Y'Hali pried up the stone with a minimum of effort and held it open."There's an electric torch in the sack," Victoria said.

"Thanks," Elliot uses his body to shield the contents of the bag. He unzips it only enough to get his arm into the bag. He feels around to make sure the shotgun is there as well as some shells. Then finds the flashlight/torch and pulls it out, zipping up the bag and heading into the tunnels.

The trio descended the stairs, their way illuminated by the torch. Y'Hali brought up the rear and replaced the stone behind them. Soon they reached the bottom of the stairs and entered a chamber with passages to the left and right, as well as the downward-sloping tunnel ahead. An orange glow came from the tunnel on the right. Three Deep Ones stood guard here with spears and nets, but they stood aside to let them pass. They looked like the same ones that had been here when Elliot had escaped the night before.

"Stay alert," Y'Hali told them. "We may be attacked tonight. Be ready for anything. At the first hint of trouble, release Rover."

"Yes, High Priestess," said the fishman in the middle of the group.

Y'Hali led the way down the sloping tunnel with Elliot behind her and Victoria bringing up the rear. They emerged into the cavern with the altar in the middle. Passages sloped down ahead and to the left and right. The right tunnel led to where Elliot had been chained up the night before. From the tunnel ahead, faint light was visible. After a short distance, its roof met the water, after which it was fully submerged. Three more Deep Ones stood guard here, watching that tunnel.

"We're going out to sea," Y'Hali told the guards. "If any trouble comes, call for Emilia. We'll also call the sharks to back you up."

"Yes, High Priestess," burbled one of them.

"Turn off the torch and put it back in the sack," said Victoria. "We'll swim out that tunnel and then to the shore on the left, by Horsham's shack. There we'll pick up what we need. Don't worry, I'll be holding onto you the whole time."

Elliot puts the torch away and zips the bag, securing it. He looked at the unending water and started to have a panic attack. "Maybe its a bad time to tell you, I'm not a very strong swimmer. Couldn't we have driven to the shack?" Noticing the disapproving looks, he stepped into the water. "How far is it?" he asks as he goes in up to his waist. He starts taking deep breaths. This probably went on for too long, until he calmed his nerves. He had a methodoly about things, and had learned to do this early on while doing dangerous break-ins. "Ready" he says finally and takes a deep breath, grabs Victoria's hand in a death grip and dives in.

He swims with all his might, trying to follow's Victoria's lead. He quickly becomes disoriented in the tunnels and realizes he would have died had he tried to swim out of here without help. Elliot tries to see where he is going but its too murkey, how Victoria knew the way was beyond him. He could feel the burning in his lungs, how much further could it be. He tried to just let out a few bubbles at a time, enough to relieve the pain, but keep his precious air. The pain became worse and worse....

Elliot had worried over nothing. He took to the water like...well, like a Deep One. Before he knew it, he and Victoria surfaced. Almost no moonlight made it through the thick cloud cover, and the rain was still pouring down in sheets. "I knew you'd do fine, silly," said Victoria, giving him a quick peck on the cheek. Y'Hali was already ahead of them and wading towards the beach, where the shack was visible, upturned boats in front of it. The three of them came ashore and approached the shack.

Victoria knocked on the door, and a light came on within. Footsteps approached. "Who's there?" growled Horsham.

"Victoria Lake," she replied. "We need a few things."

"For you, anything." Horsham opened the door.

"This is my betrothed, Elliot. We need to borrow a pair of flippers and a snorkel for him, and one of your boats. We're going out to sea. Also, give Randall a call and tell him to come join us. We may have need of his talents later."

"Is something wrong?"

"The Royal Navy may be paying us a visit," said Y'Hali. "If they do, they're in for a nasty surprise."

"Right. Take what you need."

Victoria found a pair of flippers in Elliot's size and a snorkel, which she gave to Elliot. "We'll be in the boat," she said, "but we may have to go overboard at a moment's notice."

Elliot takes the flippers with a quick nod and checks them against his feet to make sure they are the right size, then grabs the snorkel. "Well a bit of panic there, but it wasn't as bad as I'd feared. I much prefer to be in the boat." he goes over to it and picks the most seaworthy, to get ready to go. "Not sure how stable she will be in this storm."

The flippers fit Elliot well.

"That's okay," said Victoria, helping drag one of the larger boats to the shoreline. Two pairs of oars came with it. "If we go over the side, I'll hold onto you. The waves aren't too bad right now - though we can make them bad if we have to." She grinned.

When they reached the water's edge, they placed it upright in the surf and got aboard. Y'Hali strode into the water and swam, not far from the boat. "We need to row that way," said Victoria, pointing to the northeast and taking up a pair of oars. "Just follow Mother."

Elliot helps with the boat, and jumps in when its in the water. He ties the flippers to the bag and ties it to the boat, with a quick release knot, so he could remove it in a hurry if need be, but won't lose them if the boat flips. "All set." He gets into position and begins to row trying to keep up with mother.

"We wait for Mother to return," said Victoria. "She'll bring some company with her, and Randall will be swimming out from the beach to join us too. Together, we can pool our powers to command the sea and the creatures in it."

Rainwater begin to accumulate in the boat, so they had to bail it out every so often. After some time, Y'Hali resurfaced beside the boat. Another Deep One came up beside her. It bore some resemblance to her as far as Elliot could tell, but one of these creatures looked much the same as another to him.

"This is my son Hatho," Y'Hali told Elliot. "He is a priest of Hydra. We shall combine our powers as needed."

"So you are the one who would marry my little sister," said Hatho, scrutinizing him. "Well, we shall see if you are worthy. The first thing we should do is call the sharks to our aid. We will need a drop of your blood in the water, human."

Elliot looks over at Victoria with skepticism in his eyes, "Really?" he asks her. "What your blood won't do the trick?" he asks Hatho.

"Our blood would work just as well for that purpose, it is true," said Hatho. "However, it would not demonstrate your loyalty, as using your own blood would."

"Elliot is loyal to us, brother," said Victoria. "He loves me." She looked at Elliot, her eyelashes fluttering. "Show them, dear."

Elliot looks Hatho in the eye. "Have a blade?" he asks holding out his hand. Deep down he knew he wasn't loyal to the cause. He was in love with Victoria and was only there to see she was safe. But given a chance he'd put these monsters down as long as his love didn't find out.

Victoria took a small knife in a sheath out of the sack and handed it to Elliot. "Only a drop is needed," she said. "Just prick your finger and let the blood drip into the sea."

Elliot takes the knife, puts it in his palm and pulls it down, "DAMN! that hurts, how the hell do they do that on TV." Elliot grimaces while handing the knife back to Victoria. He holds his hand out over the water and squeezes till he sees a drop fall into the ocean. "There you go bud. Have fun swimming with the sharks."

He looks back at Victoria and down at his hand. A nice slice across the meaty part, "well, that was kind of dumb."

"You didn't have to cut yourself that badly, dear," said Victoria, taking the knife back, sheathing it, and stowing it back in the sack. She removed a small first aid kit from it and took out a small bandage that she used to wrap his cut.

Y'Hali and Hatho began to chant in some inhuman language. In some ways it reminded him of Victoria's song, but it clearly wasn't the same. After a while, a couple of fins appeared jutting out of the sea, streaking closer to the boat. When they arrived, they began circling it. "It is said that sharks have to keep moving, or they'll die," said Victoria.

The Deep Ones stopped their chanting. It was unclear if they had actually worked some kind of spell that brought the sharks, or if they had merely been drawn by Elliot's blood.

"Ah, Dirktooth and Fang are here," said Y'Hali. "Bruiser did not show up, but he'll be along if a feast starts. Do not worry, Elliot. You are perfectly safe, even if you fall out of the boat. They are completely under my control. They will not bite you so long as I restrain them."

Elliot bails out some of the water, "I've heard that also about sharks." He bandages up the cut on his hand. Then after hearing mother's reassurance he thinks to himself, "Oh yea, I feel totally safe in the middle of the ocean over a lost city full of monsters being circled by sharks in a sinking rowboat in a thunderstorm." But decided that might come off with too much sarcasm.

Off to the south, Elliot caught sight of a large shape in the water, looming in the distance. Its sleek silhouette revealed it to be a ship, and he was able to identify it as a Royal Navy destroyer.

"Victoria," he whispers to her. "Get ready, and don't leave my side." Elliot unties the oilskin bag from the boat, and wraps the cord around his hand.
Then he leans over and kisses Victoria deeply. "No matter what happens tonight, remember I love you."

"And I love you, Elllot," said Victoria, emrbracing him with equal fervor. She gazed off in the direction he had been looking. "Ah, I see it now. You were right, the Royal Navy has come." She leaned over the side of the boat, stuck her head and arm in the water, and waved. Then she came back up.

A moment later, Y'Hali and Hatho resurfaced next to the boat. "Mother, the Royal Navy is here," Victoria said, pointing at the distant destroyer.

"They shall regret their folly," said Y'Hali. "We do nothing as yet. Continue to watch them. They must commit the first overt hostile act."

"Yes, Mother." Victoria glanced back towards the shore, where she and Elliot could see a man in swim trunks approaching the water from the beach. "That must be Randall at last."

"Good. Together we can put paid to the Royal Navy."

'Idiots' he thinks to himself, they have no idea the hell they are sailing into.

"Mother, please remember most of the men on these ships don't even know whats going on. They are just there doing their jobs. Be merciful to the crew, I would beg of you." Thinking of all the men he may have doomed. "Killing the crew will turn all of Great Britain against you. But if you only kill the senior officers, and spare the junior officers and crew, you will win their hearts." He pauses for a second, "to do what you want to accomplish, you must have the people on your side, or this will never work." Elliot says hoping to spare at least some of the lives. He can't believe they sent ships to this invasion.

"We will not take any action at all until they start their attack," said Y'Hali, "and we will not target the crew. We will merely sink the ship. The crew can swim to shore, and they will not be harmed so long as they do not press the attack."

The man on the beach waded into the water and swam over to the boat, where Victoria helped him climb aboard. The sharks ignored him. Now that Elliot got a closer look at him, he could see that the man also had the features common to the residents of Dunwich, only his were more pronounced, almost as bad as Bertie's had been. He had fully-formed gills, and his face was very fishlike. He appeared to be in his mid-thirties, though it was hard to tell with someone who clearly wasn't entirely human.

Elliot had gotten so use to the hybrids, they didn't bother him anymore.

"Not I," said Victoria, "but I've heard all sorts of war stories from my father when I was growing up. My favourite was how he fought the Japanese on Ponape and avenged the brothers and sisters I had never gotten a chance to meet. And of course Mother has seen her share of action. She's thousands of years old!"

"That is true," said Y'Hali. "In that time, I've learned that the best way to win is to do so before battle is even joined. I don't believe it will be necessary or even advisable for any of us here to directly enter the fray. It is especially important for my people to avoid unnecessary risk. A man may live a hundred years, if he's very lucky. When you can live forever, you have that much more to lose."

Elliot lowered his head and looked into the bottom of the boat. Something wasn't right about this whole situation, but he couldn't put his finger on it. He knew Victoria had never seen any action. He wanted to protect her from that, but he knew it was futile. He had seen that look in eager recruits before. They didn't know the horrors of war until it was upon them, and then it was too late.
"Lets hope we don't have to." he says in response to mothers prediction.

Victoria peered through the falling rain at the destroyer, placing her hand sideways against her forehead. "There's activity on the deck of the ship," she said. "I can see a bunch of armed men in wet suits gathering. Looks like they're getting ready for something."

Elliot could see it too. A squad of Royal Marines were assembling on the destroyer's deck, and a tough-looking sergeant was addressing them.

"Keep an eye on them," said Y'Hali, "but let's not take any action yet."

It would also alert whoever the Deep Ones intended to see it, and there was no telling what they were meant to do once they did. Further, it would blow his cover, as everyone around him would see him.

The men in the rubber boats began paddling towards the cliff, to where the cave entrance was hidden.

"I thought I heard something," said Y'Hali. "I'm sure you're right. The invasion is underway."

While most of the others were too distracted to notice Elliot take the flare from the sack, he could not escape Hatho's suspicious, bulging eyes. "And what do you think you're doing with that flare?" snarled the Deep One.

"I'm sure he just took it out because he knows this is the time to fire it, now that he's heard the shot," said Victoria. "The rest of us will be busy, after all."

"If that's so, then fire it in the air, human."

"Yes, do so," said Y'Hali. "It's time to start the ritual." She began to chant, and Randall and her children joined in.

Hatho glared at Elliot with pure malevolence, but he did not interrupt his chanting. The three small boats paddled closer to the cliffs. When they were most of the way there, a sudden rushing sound came from behind them. A massive wave, some thirty feet high, was coming in from the sea, towering over the HMS Brighton behind them! It wasn't all that long or wide, but the height alone was enough to swamp the ship. The wave crashed against the destroyer with its full force, knocking her onto her side and capsizing her. Then it continued, looming over the tiny dinghies and the Marines in them...

The Deep Ones and their spawn stopped their chanting. "You did that on purpose!" Hatho snarled at Elliot. "I'll kill you for that!"
