Nichonka pats the leopard cub that visits her hut every night. The nights are shorter and shorter but they fall faster and faster. The fur is soft and the feral being purrs. Nichonka smiles as she hears a scream. A couple of red-top birds take flight.

Nichonka's eyes shoot up as she debates whether or not to pursue the scream. After a few moments that feel like hours, Nichonka decides to delegate the issue to a more well suited individual. She slowly leaves her hut in search of another.
Coming out of the wooden hut, through the door opening to greet the great, all encompassing Ngai, sleeping inside the mountain. The ceremony will be held in the outer chamber close to Ngai. Before, the ceremony had been held in the glade of ancestors. Today, it is different. She will be Ngai's queen. Only she, can speak with him. And through her, he can speak to his people. That is as it has been told.
Nichonka knows of nothing else. It's the natural order of things.
In the village, several of her sisters and brothers walk and run around. Now, the scream can be heard again. It is now clear that it is a lustful scream. Nothing to be upset about.
That is as it should be. As it always has been.
She, herself had also screamed like that. But not anymore. Now she belongs to Ngai.
Behind her, the cub comes treading after her. In front of her, a trail of leaves have been laid out to mark her road to the mountain slope.
A beat of drums starts to build up inside her. It is accompanied by the very real drums from the village center.

The Tana river is what's used for transportation to and from the Indian Ocean. Not many tribes visit Ngai's chosen. The western people that tried to push away Ngai, now lay to be fed on by nature. Some, are within the chamber, as an honour. The village is within the reach of Mount Ngai, that the others call Mount Kenya. That would be like naming your village "home". Pathetic.
The walk up the trail gets easier for every time she makes it. It's her destiny since she was born.
The closer to the chamber she gets, the darker it gets outside, not only from the shadow but from Ngai as well.

Nichanka's heart beats like a drum as she approaches the Ngai, whether in reverence or fear she could never truly ascertain herself. She takes a breath as she nears, and takes in the unique and strangely beautiful area directly surrounding her.
