Dark Heresy- what the average denizen knows in brief

In the grim dark future, there is only war.

It is the year 999.M41. 20,000 years ago, men worshipped such trash as technology and intellectual progression; though they were misguided, our ancestors of yesteryear did provide and discover one bit of useful tech- the warpdrive. The warpdrive allowed vessels to travel unhindered through the swirling chaos of the warp, and to this day is the most valuable technology known. It would, as all things, fall apart if the Emperor died. Without the Emperor harnessing and keeping the warpdrive operational from his Golden Throne, all warpdrives would fail, leaving all planets throughout the Imperium of Man isolated and vulnerable to attacks from already imposing foes. Yes, even with the protection of the Emperor, we are not invincible- trillions of xenos are constantly waging war upon our great Empire; the Eldar do it out of jealousy, the Orks out of anger, the Tyranids out of hunger. But it is not so simple as xenos on the borders, as every citizen of every planet must remain weary of an equal- possibly greater- threat:
Heresy
Though some heresy may seem benign, no forms of it are such. Even the most simple and peaceful heretics are heretics nonetheless and should be reported and dealt with thusly. However, the layman cannot find and deal with heresy so constantly and with such devotion as to purge it. That is where the Inquisition comes in...
