John is lost. Not in a way that a map would help. This kind of lost comes from a broken marriage and 2 kids who would rather forget he existed. The bottle had been a good friend before the divorce, now it's the only friend. When the family home was sold he started on a road trip that hasn't stopped for 3 years. Before that, Life used to be good. Now it just happens to him every time he wakes up.

He’s seen some strange things through his twitching motel curtains recently. The worrying thing is that it's mostly when he's sober. Even cheap booze can't completely numb the instincts that had made him the youngest detective in San Francisco Police Department. Lee Vining seems like a quiet place to shack up for a few nights and he books the room. He caresses the bottle of whiskey, which weighs down his jacket on one side. He'll sleep tonight.

"Welcome to Lee Vining Motel, sir." The manager has a name tag reading Adam on his chest pocket. He looks at John trying to decide his business. "Passing through, right? Single room for the night? There's an ice machine down the far end, should you want some rocks with that." He nods at the bottle protruding from John's pocket.

Waiting for the new arrival to decide if he's staying or not, Adam turns to unbox some bottles of Mountain Dew.

John has stayed in some flea ridden rat holes over the last three years and sometimes he had smelt worse than they did. This young fella seems friendly, the offer of ice seemed genuine, not judgemental. Noticing the name badge he replies

"Sure Adam, a cheap room, near the ice, will do just fine"

They exchange smiles.

He is reminded of what it was like to have friends before... He shuts that line of thought, a pressing need to open that bottle urging him to pay quickly, and get to his room.

“I don’t normally do this, but it’s close to midnight and you seem like a nice person, so I’ll give you the room for $29 for the night. Deal?”
He hands John a key with a leather patch. There's an eight sewn on to the leather.

Walking over to the room he passes some benches and comes up on the ice machine. The room next to it has an eight nailed to the door. The inside is smallish. Single bed, small cupboard and a homemade shelf supporting a black and white TV. The single window is perfectly clean as is the room.

Having stayed at the room for three days, resting, drinking and forgetting why he left San Fransisco, John looks out the window to see a yellow Jeep park outside - close to his icemachine.
