You leave the house and head to the church. You arrive there with no interference. The sun is bright and sunny, and everyone who sees you in the street smiles and waves to you.

Richard finds the scence of last nights event odd on this calm bright sunny day, he looks down at the new gravel on the ground and moves some of it with his foot to see if there is anything underneath.

Richard walks around the outside of the church at a distance taking in all of the entrances and exits, also looking to see if the building appears to have a basement or not.

You walk around the church and you see windows, it has a side door and like most buildings here, you can see there is probably a basement, but you can't see an windows to it.

"I guess we'd better go inside," says Eddie. "Most of us should probably just walk right in the front door. A group this large can't exactly avoid detection. But there's nothing to stop one or two of us from slipping in the side door and snooping around while the rest of us draw all of the attention. I'll be with the front door group."

As you walk in there is a chapel with windows, and stairs on the side that appear they go up to a balcony on either side of you. And then pews lined in rows, and a pulpit at the front.

The paintings and sculptures decorate the large room, and appear to all be Christian in origin.

At the back of the chapel is a small door on either side leading further back.

You walk over to the right side of the chapel passing by the Alter and come to a small door. You try it and inside is a storage closet. It is full of shelves. On the shelves are various religious items, candle sticks, candles, crosses, etc.. Some paintings are also in here, as you look at them, they are of the Virgin Mary and Jesus.

You cross over the church the other small door and open it. It leads into a small room. To the left is a door that leads outside. To the right is a hallway that runs the width of the church. And across the small entry room is another small door.

Looking down the hall there are 2 more doors.

Just as you open the small door, the door in the middle of the hall opens and you see a pastor step out, he sees you and looks surprised, "I'm sorry I didn't see you," and he ducks back in his door.

On the other side of the small door you see stairs going down.

Aunt Loosa approaches the front of the church, catching up with the others.

I'm sorry, I overslept. I was so tired last night. I had some interesting dreams too, though that isn't unusual. she looks around Where's Richard and Eddie?

You hear the pastor peak out from behind the door, "Oh, then why were you going down in the basement?"

"I didn't know it was the basement," says Eddie. "I came inside and didn't see anyone around, so I was trying all of the doors to see if there was someone here. Why, what's down there?"

Aunt Loosa quietly steps through the door and into the church.

OOC: If she is unobserved entering the church she will try and move quietly into a dark corner where she can observe the scene (I'm picturing a typical european church with dark stone walls and lots of shadows and nooks and crannies - if this is a light an airy affair then she will do as below).

If she feels she has been seen she will take a seat/pew and act as though she is in commune with god.

As you enter the church it is dark with lots of nooks and crannies to hide in. The church appears to be empty. You can see the door on the far left is open, and you hear voices that sound like Eddie coming from there. you can easily hide if you wish or move up to be with Richard and Eddie, your choice.

The pastor looks at you like he is trying to figure out who you are, "if you are here for spiritual guidance come on into my office. If you don't know whats down there, its best not to go."

Aunt Loosa waits until the pastor, Eddie and Richard move into the office and close the door before moving slowly towards the door that she assumes leads to the basement.

Once there she quietly tries the handle, checking to see whether it is locked or not.

"They are indeed dangerous people," says Eddie. "Two of them committed a brutal murder just last night. One preferred to die rather than be taken alive, and the other fled into this church. He must have gone down the basement."

Aunt Loosa steps slowly, placing each foot carefully, guiding herself from the feeble light through the door. She looks for a light switch or lantern before searching her bag for a flashlight or book of matches to light her way.

If you help us by telling us all you know, it could make the difference between success and failure. And if we fail because you don't help us, they might just decide you helped us anyway - which you already did by telling us that they use the basement. They'll never believe you didn't help us. It's only a matter of time before they come after you or someone else you care about, in spite of whatever agreement you've made with them. The devil and those who serve him are liars and don't keep their word. So I'll give you one last chance to aid us in stopping them before I go." He slowly turns to leave the room.

"All I know is they go in the basement, and come out of the basement. I never hear anything, and I don't go down there. A couple of them came a few years back. The basement had been sealed shut. They busted it open and put in a door. They told me if I ever went down there or stopped anyone from going down, they would feed me to their monsters. They only come in the evenings a few times a month, dressed in those robes, those damn robes." He shakes his head with it drooping. "I'm a man of peace, I can't fight them. I called the police, and the deputy came and told me I better do what they said." He pauses for a long time. "That's all I know."

That is the same color as the robes you saw on the men last night.

As you start to creep down the stairs, you can see it is dark down there, except for a light flashing around, probably someone with a flashlight.

Eddie lets his eyes adjust to the darkness, not wanting to risk giving away his position by using a light of his own, relying on the flashlight below to see. He sneaks downwards, but the stairs creak a little.

As the 2 of you go down the stairs and turn the bend, the stairs creek loudly and the flashlight spins around pointing right into your eyes.
Right before you are blinded you only saw 1 figure.

You hear a famiar female voice as the light shifts down to the floor, "You boys scared the beejeebees outa me." As your night vision returns some, you can see it is Aunt Loosa.

This basement doesn't look like its been used as a basement for several decades. Cobwebs cover the walls and many of the boxes and crates stored in the room. The only portion that looks different is the floor that leads straight from the bottom of the stairs to a trapdoor in the floor next to Aunt Loosa.

"Sorry, Aunt Loosa," whispers Eddie. "You gave me a fright too. I didn't know you were the one who had come down here." He fills her in on what the pastor had told him. "Maybe we can find some of those robes here. They'll make good disguises." He examines the containers to see if any of the ones not covered with cobwebs have been disturbed recently or show signs of use, looking inside them carefully.

None of the crates look like they have been disturbed in years. You open the one closest to the trap door and it creakes loudly. It appears empty inside except for some old newspaper in the bottom. A strong pungent odor hits you as you look in.

"It looks empty," whispers Eddie, recoiling at the odor, "but something stinks in there, and it may be concealed by that newspaper. Do you think we should take a closer look, or leave well enough alone? That trapdoor leads to where we need to go."

OOC: I'm not sure what has happened, we seem to have lost all our players. I'm going to post to see if we can find some replacements. I think Loosa is around, but I'm not 100% sure on Richard. A friend of mine but has disappeared completley, not even answering my emails or skype messages. I'm hoping he returns.

Alyssa Ryan clasps Eddie's arm as he peers into the crate. "Sure is stinky!" she says, her nose wrinkling. "I hope I didn't make you jump? . . . How about you poking the newspaper with something?" She looks around for a suitable object.

"Nah, that's okay," says Eddie, with a smile that can't really be seen in the dark. "I can't think of anyone else I'd rather have touch my arm. I guess we could poke it with a stick or something. We just might not like what we find, if it looks as bad as it smells." He also searches for something suitable.

Alyssa grabs both broomsticks, hands one to Eddie, keeping the other and holding it like a spear pointed at the crate. "Here you are. I'm ready for rats or anything," she adds with a touch of irony.

"I'm sure we can handle rats," says Eddie, using his own broomstick to poke around in the crate and try to see what's under the newspapers, "but rats don't smell this bad."

As you move some of the newspapers you do see some large rats, their bodies a good 8 inches in length, their tails almost doubling that length. They squeek and begin to run around, and disappear under the newspaper and some sound like they scurry out of the box through some unseen hole. As you move some more of the newspaper, you find the source of the smell. An arm and part of a foot, both looked like they have been chewed on by rats, and both are now crawling in maggots.

"Uh!" exclaims Alyssa, "how awful. Vermin! You okay, Officer Donovan? This crate must be some kinda nest, and the rats have dragged the remains here. . . ." She thinks for a moment. "The body will be around I guess, which is a horrible thought. Where did the rats go to? Let's shift the crate."

You can move the large crate and you can see a large hole in the back of the crate. Its about 4" in diameter. The rats have scurried off behind one of the other dozens of crates in here.

Eddie goes white as a sheet, shuddering as he looks away from the remains. "I don't know how anyone can be okay after seeing...that," he says. "But please, call me Eddie. This must be what's left of the people the cult murdered. Maybe they hid the remains in the boxes, and then the rats tunneled in to get at them."

Alyssa comforts the Officer by hugging his back, leaning her chin on his shoulder and gripping his biceps. "I'm sorry, Eddie. I was way too blasé. Believe me, it is terribly shocking. She pulls out of her motherly embrace and looks around. "What do we do now?"

Eddie relaxes, taking a deep breath. He appreciates the contact, and he would be able to enjoy it better were the situation different. Of course, if the situation had been different, it wouldn't have happened. "It's okay," he says. "Thank you, Alyssa. I guess we'd better go through that trapdoor. Hopefully we won't find anything worse than this down there." He replaces the lid on top of the crate to cover the remains and goes over to inspect the trapdoor, checking to see if it has a locking mechanism.

The old iron round door doesn't look locked, but as you look closer at it you see a symbol engraved on the lid.

Alyssa fingers her portable Kodak with its concertina lens. "I'd record this symbol, but dare I use a flash?" She does as Eddie, checking the iron door, gently sweeping her hand over it and feeling for a lock, handle or hinges.

Finally working up the courage to join with the others, Norman makes his way down to the basement and sees the grizzly sight of human remains.

"Rockport is out of Boston's jurisdiction," says Eddie. "Only the county sheriff or the Massachusetts State Police could pull rank on the local cops here. Maybe the T-Men, if bootlegging were involved, but we've seen no evidence of that. Aunt Loosa, does this symbol mean anything to you? It looks like a whip and a pitchfork to me. I don't know if using a flash down here is such a good idea, Alyssa. Maybe you could just draw it."

"Why, Mr. Smith, you are perspiring terribly," says Alyssa. She hands him her own silk handkerchief. You're quite right, Eddie," referring to both backup and a camera flash. She sketches the symbol in her notebook. "It does look like a whip--perhaps it means 'slavery' of some sort?"

He examines the symbol, wondering if he has seen it before in any of his books.

"Makes as much sense as anything else," says Eddie with a shrug. "I don't know what else it could mean. I think we're going to have to go down there. We'll have to try to be stealthy. I don't see any lock on this thing, but someone could trap us down there just by putting something heavy on top of the trapdoor. Of course, there may be other ways in and out of there."

"Yes, let's go through the trapdoor. If it does have a weight placed on top of it, maybe we could all push up with the broomsticks to lift the trapdoor open?

You open the hatch and you see a small tunnel leading down into darkness. It is bricked, with a ladder attached. As you shine your light into the tunnel it goes down 20' to a tunnel below. It is damp and wet. There is about an inch of water covering the floor.

When Richard reaches the bottom of the stairs he pulls out his flashlight and his pistol then looks down the tunnels to see what he can see.

Richard descends the ladder that is sturdier than it looks. As you are almost to the bottom you can see that at the bottom it opens into a roughly circular room 10-12 feet in diameter. 3 tunnels extend out from the room in different directions. The walls are damp but do not appear to be the source of the water. An ocean smell pervades the area and the ceiling of the roof is covered in black silt.
It is very quiet down here, the city noise has silenced, and every step you make reverberates through the tunnels.

"At least one of these tunnels must go out to the sea," says Eddie. "After that creature we saw, I suggest we try to head in the opposite direction." He tries to feel for a breeze in order to determine which way that is.

"And," says Alyssa, looking up at the roof covered in black silt, "these tunnels are tidal, so we need to be sure of our exit." She takes a slow turn round the chamber. "The splash of my steps echoes through the tunnels. If there's something down here with us it'll soon know of it."

Richard replies looking down at the depth of the water in the tunnels "If they are tidal then we need to follow the tunnel that has the lowest amount of water as it will be leading away from the sea."

Aunt Loosa has followed her friends in quiet contemplation as she thinks on the symbol.
Yes she says we really don't want to be down here when the tide turns. I think we should mark the walls so we can find our way back here if we need to.

You study the tunnels closely looking for some patern of where the water seems to rise or drop but cannot tell which is which.
The water does seem to be stagnant and still.

OOC: Ben the first time I did this the post was showing me a dice roll of 0 using the dice= button so I did the second one with the dice button then the first number changed from 0 to 78 in the post. Not sure whats going on but feel free to use the 78 as my spot hidden roll and ignore the second try roll

It becomes apparant to everyone after several see it that there is more soot on the roof going in the direction of the tunnel directly away from the ladder.

Also, your team has noticed that a section of the wall, low to the ground has a crack around the edge. It appears it could form some sort of short door, only about 3 feet high.

The door opens into another tunnel. This tunnel looks much different than the tunnel you are in or the one leading off into the darkness in 3 directions. This tunnel looks very new, probably built in the last year. Wood is being used to hold the dirt up and on the sides. It doesn't look very stable. It is only about 3 feet high and 3 feet wide, and stretches off into darkness.

Does anyone have a compass? The tunnel looks fairly straight as far as I can see - we know where it starts and could plot it's path, and see where it may lead.

Eddie crawls into the small space and shines the flashlight around. The ground is moist but not wet. On the back side of the small brick door there is a handle and 2 hinges that hold it to the wall. These look crude and misplaced, but do the job. You also see a chisel, hammer, small shovel, compass and saw blades are in a bag behind the door so you couldn't see them until you climbed in. A lot of mortar dust is on the floor and walls now that you are in it. The tunnel leads straight off into darkness.

The hidden tunnel of dirt runs almost directly North.

The tunnel that is most travelled runs NW.

The tunnels to either side go NE and SW.

Hmm, the stays are looking fairly evenly spaced i'd say about 5' or 6' between each, Eddie, if you count them we can get a rough idea how deep the tunnel runs.

That's assuming you are happy to go that far down Eddie - it will be very difficult to turn around quickly if you need to and I'd be wary of firing that big ol' pistol of yours, the blast could bring the whole thing down on you. she pats him reassuringly on the shoulder.
Loosa stops, deep in thought for a moment Eddie, Lyssa remember when went to the island and dug up the box - there was that coded message, I think it was something like we dug too far and found our god do you think this tunnel might be related to that?

And don't forget those creatures we saw - maybe they come into the tunnels when the tide is high.

"Yeah, that's right!" says Eddie, nodding as he remembers. "That means the next clue must be down that tunnel. Whatever that thing we saw is, it might have been bigger than me. It would have trouble fitting down there. I'll go see how far the tunnel goes, and I'll be careful." He crawls down the tunnel again, the flashlight in his left hand and the revolver in his right. He won't use it to shoot rats, but if there's something truly dangerous down here, he'd rather take the chance on firing than let it attack him.

Her hands rub at various charms at her wrists and neck as she does so.

His eye's motion to the door, palming it open and applying his bodyweight, Scott manuvers his head around the door as to gain the advantage of the unknowing of what lies beyond. He thought I was one of the cultists and was about to shoot me, but I managed to convince him we're on the same side. It seems he got the mistaken impression from what Scott told him about looking for a friend who was into the occult. Once he locks up, he'll come and join us."

Carefully she moves to the entrance of the tunnel she hid in and checks that area is clear before approaching the hidden tunnel and gently knocking on it.

You all leave the tunnel and meat back up in the main chamber. The splashing noise from the robed figure having long gone, and any torchlight flicker is out.

Those that had never met Colonel Hall he stands a full 6 foot high, with blonde hair that is starting to gray, thin and in his mid-50's. But you can see the muscles in his arm, and the scars on his face and arms tell you he has been in more than one scrap.

"I've been waiting for this for some time. Colonel Hall here. What is the plan?" he says.

Ideally, we'd like to find those robes they wear so we can disguise ourselves. We've found out some things already."
