IC: Ch 4d. Bradley Wharf - Eddie, Scott & Norman

Location: Bearskin Neck - Bradley Wharf
Date: August 12, 1921. 3:00 PM

Walking down Bearskin Neck, there are buildings tightly built on each side of the small road. Along side the buildings it look like people have been camping there.

As you come out of the tight row of buildings you see more than a dozen people painting. And beyond them sitting out on a wharf is a red building that matches the one in the postcard.

A beautiful day. Perfect weather to track down a killer and who the devil knows what else.

Taking a long look around, Norman looks towards the others, specifically the officer. "Should we speak to some of the painters? Perhaps one of them knows something."

"Sounds like a good place to start," says Eddie. He walks up to the painters. "Good day," he says, glancing up at the building. "This seems to be a popular building to paint. I see pictures of it everywhere."

A woman in her mid 30's looks up from her painting. "It's beautiful, it just draws me in." And she goes back to her painting. You do notice not all the paintings are of the building. Maybe 1/4 of them are, the rest are of boats, the 2 lighthouses you can see in the distance and the sea shore.

"Thank you, ma'am," says Eddie, turning to the others. "Shall we go up and knock on the door?"

"It seems to be as good an idea as any," Norman attempts to appear nonchalant, even if he feels anything but. He glances nervously at the painters, waiting for them to turn into fearsome monsters and attack.

"We should keep our wits about us. What should we tell anyone who resides inside the building, as to why we have come looking around? "

It is a small walk out to where the building resides on the stone man-made wharf. The side of the building is in full view of the painters. The painters can also see you if you are standing on either end of the building.
From where you are standing you can see that there are 2 large double doors on the land end, with a smaller door built into the 2 large doors. There are no windows on the end you can see, but there is the 2 windows on the side.

To get to the red building you will pass in front of a business called 'Bradley Wharf Shipping and Fishing'. It has windows all around it and 1 door you can see.

"We could tell them we're interested in learning about the building's history after having seen it in various artwork," suggests Eddie.

"That could work. I'm sure they see many artists around here." Norman nervously adjusts his glasses.

The librarian heads towards the red building. Assuming he's not interrupted, he'll knock upon the small door. It's not like him to show such initiative, but he was trying to be brave.

Norman walks past the Bradley Wharf shipping. (Eddie and Scott let me know if you are with him or back with the artists.) You see several people in the building.
You walk on past that and out to the building. You knock on the door, nothing happens.

Eddie accompanies Norman to the door. "Maybe there's a back door, or a tradesman's entrance," he says, looking around. "For that matter, the front door might not even be locked."

You are standing on the West end of the building. There are no windows here just the 2 large doors and the smaller one build into it. You can tell you are easily visible to the painters here.

The South side of the building is the one in the picture you can see it has 2 windows, and possibly another small door.

The East end of the building is the one closest to the end of the wharf, and while you haven't seen it yet, appears it would be visible so some of the painters depending on where they setup to paint.

The North end as you look around, is the same as the South side without the door. You can tell it would not be visible from where the painters are working.

Norman knocks again, a bit louder. If that does not get a reply he'll take Eddie's advise and try the door.

Nothing happens when you knock louder, so you try the handle and it is locked.

"Well, looks like we're not getting inside now," says Eddie. "Maybe some of us can come back later and check, but if anyone's planning to go inside without the owner's permission, remember that I'd rather not know about it. I don't think there's any reason to do that at this point anyway. Maybe we can find out who owns the building. There have to be records at the town hall or something." He notes the building's address.

Norman is relieved that he won't have to break into the building, and is all too happy to get out of there. Turning towards the others, he nods.

"I'm afraid this seems like a dead end. Perhaps one of us should purchase supplies and join with the painters? It would provide us with the perfect cover to observe the building and see who is coming or going from it? Taking a deep breath, he continues. "I... I would be willing to do it."

Eddie,as you turn to go, you hear something unusual. The waves are splashing onto the wharf is making a ringing sound, like it is hitting something metal. It is just barely audible. The wharf you are standing on, is all made of stone granite.

Eddie puts a finger to his lips. "Do you hear that?" he whispers. "The waves sound like they're crashing against metal, but this wharf is made of granite. There must be something down there."

Scott shakes his head at Eddie's suggestion.

"I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary." he confesses. He retreats several steps from the dock the building resides on and peers curiously at the shoreline, trying to discern anything out of the ordinary.

"We need to find a way to see below," says Eddie. "We also need to get the address of this building so we can trace its ownership, but it's not on this side. Let's circle around and see what we can see."

Scott, spying nothing of note along the wharf, breaks into a trot and trails Eddie and Norman towards the far side of the building. There, he catches sight of them craning their necks in an apparent effort to discern the address of the building. Devoid of a better idea, he follows suit.

"Sheesh, don't they put addresses on the buildings around here...?" he grumbles aloud. He hitches a thumb towards the distant line of painters. "I'll bet one of the locals knows the address of the place."

While you are unable to see an address or what is making the metal noise, all of you can hear it when you are on the North side of the building, on the small walkway of wharf between the building and the edge.

Its pretty easy to notice you hear the clang when the wave rolls in.

"Yeah," says Eddie. "There's got to be some way down to the beach. Then we'll be able to see what that metal thing is."

Scott nods at Eddie's suggestion and takes the opportunity to scan the wharf's edge from this new perspective for some possible pathway down.

He sighs loudly in exasperation and runs his hand through his hair.

"I can't see any clear way down to the beach." he mutters before turning towards the pair. "Listen, you fellas see if you can't find a way down. I'll go ask the locals bout the address."

Confident Eddie and Norman will figure out a way to the beach, he skirts his way back around the building and approaches the long row of artists once more. He strolls casually towards the nearest painter and leans in.

"Hey that's a fantastic painting you've got going there. By chance do you know the address of that building?" he inquires, gesturing towards the structure. "Also, have you any clue how a fella would get down to the beach from here?"

The Wharf almost forms a circle that doesn't connect. There is a beach on the south side. You can easily see that just go back down the alley of bearskin neck and out onto the beach.

"Nah, I never saw an address, just Bradley wharf." The painter responds.

Scott offers up a sharp nod and a smile in appreciation to the useless answer and trots back up the wharf towards the other two. Once within earshot he cups his hands around his mouth.

"Fellas!" he calls, "Beach is down this way!"

He motions towards the alley and sets off in motion himself. Moments later he finds himself on the pale strip of beach and circles back towards the building, keeping his eyes peeled for any sort of metallic object.

Norman heads down to the beach, almost unwillingly curious as to what could be making the noise Eddie claimed to hear. His mind is consumed with the dozens of dime novel mysteries he has read, and he wondered what this building could be hiding.

As the 3 of you walk past the artists and out onto the beach you are looking at the South side of the Motif and you see no metal.

What you do see is Richard and Warren in the parking lot in the Square.
