IC: Ch 4b. Art Association -- Alyssa, Aunt Loosa & Charles

Location: Art Association - Main Street
Date: August 12, 1921. 3:00 PM
The building is new with a new looking sign on it. When you walk in, the room has dozens of paintings hanging on the wall. There is a man in his mid 40's sitting behind a desk at the back of the room. There is also a door on the back wall, and several chairs around the room, obviously intended for you to sit and look at the paintings.
The gentleman lifts his head as you walk in. He smiles and stands up. "Welcome to the Rockport Art Association."

"Lovely afternoon," acclimatizing herself to all the colours and rich air of culture, Alyssa walks through the door with eager excitement. "How are you today?"Alyssa addresses the gentleman.

The room is just one large square room with paintings covering about 90% of the walls. Many are of the red building on the wharf, but there is a good number of ships, the two lighthouses, the sea shore, etc...
At the back side of the room is one corner where the paintings get far darker, and have a much more sinister subject matter.

"That seems the appropriate approach,"Alyssa's eyes wonder along the wall in feign interest. She wasn't quite sure what the big picture was, and how it'll frame itself into, but Alyssa was quite driven to get to the bottom of it.

Alyssa finds several paintings by the same artist. About half of them are of the Red building, the other half are a mixture of the coast, boats and the 2 light houses.

Squinting her eyes closely at the picture Alyssa makes an effort reading the signature. She felt like old age was catching up to her like Aunt Loosa despite her youth, trying to figure who the artist is.

It looks very much like the signature at the Woods House. The main initials and nothing else.

"Excuse me for a moment,"Alyssa makes her way back to the curator attending the front desk. "Sorry to trouble you, you have a moment to spare?"Alyssa points toward the pictures of interest, "I must ask, whose initials are H and S? Spoil me the surprise please." Playfully smiling, Alyssa leans on the counter in eager prospect, her reporter instincts sparked fresh adventure back into her eyes.

Aunt Loosa slowly walks around the gallery, examining the paintings by the the artist they are interested in. In particular she looks to see if there is something in common between all of them - not just the red building but maybe something that appears in all of them, in the background perhaps. Are the pictures of the red building all from the same aspect?
As she hears Alyssa asks her question to the curator, she watches him and gauges to gauge his reaction.

The man behind the desk looks up, "that would be Howard. He does some good work, you have a good eye for art. He is fast too, produces at a painting every day."
Aunt Loosa,you see a wide variety of paintings, about half with the Motif, but from different angles, different times of day, etc... The rest are as I already described, nothing seems to tie them together. As you get to the back corner of the area, the themes get much darker. Storms, sea monsters, death, etc... Make a Sanity 0/1 test. Some of the images are pretty disturbing. Something starts to catch your eye though. Make a Spot hidden check as well.

Aunt Loosa,while you wouldn't recommend the paintings for childrens viewing, its not that bad.
But one thing that is very prominent in many of the darker paintings you notice a particular constellation is repeated over an over. You can make an Astronomy roll to identify it. You go back to some of the other paintings, and while faint, you see it in several paintings. Not in all, but in over half. Often barely visible in one corner of the sky, even in the daytime paintings. If you didn't know what it looked like, you would almost think it was just stray spots.

Charles turn to the man behind the desk. "What a talent to paint so good work that fast. Do he paint alot of different motives aswell? Is he an employe here or an artist fulltime?"

"He is a talent. He showed up a couple weeks ago and started painting. I sell his paintings on commission. Good enought kid. He is probably down at the Bearskin now. I've been letting him crash here at night." he says.

Alyssa looks to Charles and back to the curator, "Howard sounds quite the character, and his work doesn't betray his integrity either."Howard's squatting lifestyle reminded Alyssa of her nomadic lifestyle with Jordie, in their younger and more vulnerable years of her youth. "Sorry, he was Howard...?" Stretching out the last word in the air, hoping Alyssa could encourage the curator to finish her sentence.

Charles moves back to the others to examine what paintings they might have missed. He have an uncomfortable feeling about it but he still thinks that they might have more important information or at least a little background about the place they've arrived to.

Do you see it, Charles? Aunt Loosa says in hushed tones.
She shows him her sketch of the constellation It's in all of his paintings, sometimes more obvious, sometimes more subtle. Do you recognise it? I must admit the stars aren't my forte. she continues in the same low voice.
I think maybe I'll go to the library, see if I can find any further information about it.

After Aunt Loosa points out the constellation on the darker images, she can then show you in the other paintings where they also appear, though much more subtle and could be easily explained away if you didn't realize what you were looking at.

Medri,Not sure what the d10 rolls were for. So lets throw those out.
For the d100 rolls, the first was for Sanity, you rolled an 11, that was very good. It was a Sanity 0/1 test. Which means if you pass you suffered 0 sanity loss. If you had rolled higher than your current sanity you would have taken 1 sanity.
The 2nd d100 roll was for Astronomy. You rolled a 98 which is normally a critical failure. So in reality, you think you recognize the pattern, but you are wrong, but you could role play it if you want to, and say you do see it, it looks like the Little Dipper.

The recurring theme of stars looked identical regardless of season in each picture, yet Alyssa couldn't quite connect the dots the same way Aunt Loosa did. The more she stared on, the more her thoughts were lost like stars Alyssa couldn't arrange into constellations. "My word, it's quite... breath taking," searching for the appropriate words that fails her honesty. "The library isn't going anywhere, and our friend doesn't like to settle himself down. Any objections before we set forBearskin?"Alyssa puts on her motorcycle gloves.

Ben,Thought the rulebook said precentile plus ten sided. But I'll leave the ten sided out next time.
Charles thinks to himself if he recognize the pattern, he thinks he's seen it before but doesn't feel that sure. With a distant look he turns to Alyssa and nods. "Yes... Let's go to the Bearskin."

OOC Medri/Charles,Depending on the nature, you would only roll a d10 for things like battle damage, loss of sanity, etc depending on what percentile you rolled beforehand. Though d10 is not needed sometimes. However, you only needed to roll [i]Astronomy[/i] and [i]Sanity[/i] in this case. Your [i]Astronomy[/i] is only at 01% which is the base for everyone, and your [i]Sanity[/i] is 46%.

The 3 of you hop on the motorcycle and head to the square. There are parking spots there and a sign that reads "Bearskin Neck". As you park your bike you notice both the other cars from your group are here. As you walk up to the walkway of bearskin neck, it is a very narrow road that leads out to a wharf. Buildings are lining both sides of the small road, and just on the other side of the buildings you see a group of painters scattered about. You see the rest of the MAPS team having just passed the painters and are moving out of sight behind a building.

As you walk up past the painters, you see the red building called Motif #1. You see about half of the painters are painting it. The other half are doing other sea based subjects, boats, beaches, the light-houses, etc...
You rush on past them and the your fellow investigators seem to be disagreeing on their course of action. You catch up to them right as they reach the red building out on the end of the wharf.
