IC: Ch 2. Welcome to Rockport

Location: Rockport, MA.
Date: August 12, 1921, 8:00 AM

Norman,Here is what you found from a couple hours research on Rockport, MA. Before the coming of the English explorers and colonists, Cape Ann was home to a number of Native American villages, inhabited by members of the Agawam tribe. Samuel de Champlain named the peninsula "Cap Aux Isles" in 1605, and his expedition may have landed there briefly. By the time the first Europeans founded a permanent settlement at Gloucester in 1623, most of the Agawams had been killed by diseases caught from early contacts with Europeans. The area that is now Rockport was simply an uninhabited part of Gloucester for more than 100 years, and was primarily used as a source of timber—especially pine-for shipbuilding. The area around Cape Ann was also one of the best fishing grounds in New England. In 1743, a dock was built at Rockport harbor on Sandy Bay and was used for both timber and fishing. By the beginning of the 19th century, the first granite quarries were developed, and by the 1830s, Rockport granite was being shipped to cities and towns throughout the East Coast of the United States. Rockport had consisted primarily of large estates, summer homes, and a small fishing village while Gloucester was becoming increasingly urbanized. Rockport was set off as a separate town in 1840 as its residents desired a separate enclave with an identity of its own, and was incorporated in 1840.  As the demand for its high-grade granite grew during the Industrial Revolution, the quarries of Rockport became a major source of the stone. In 1856, a gang of 200 women led by Hannah Jumper swept through the town and destroyed anything containing alcohol in what is called "Rockport's revolt against rum" and banned alcohol from the town.

At 5 am everyone meets at the museum. Norman looks pretty tired. Ms. Patton had laid out some pastries, coffee and tea.
.
For those new to the group she hands each of you a small satchel. The letters M.A.P.S. are stamped into the soft leather. She also hands all of you $20.
.
If you look in the satchel, each bag has a flashlight, pocket knife, some rope, box of matches, a notepad, pen, small first aid kit and a set of 20 business cards with your name, the initials M.A.P.S., a fancy seal and a phone number you don't recognize, but it is a Boston city area number.
.
She also lays out a map of Rockport:

map

Ms. Patton hands Richard and Scott each a box of .45 ammo with 50 rounds. "That should be more than enough for the 2 of you. I have booked 4 rooms for you at the Woods House on South Street. I've also marked where the Library is and the train depot." she continues, "Is there anything else I can get you before you head out? And do be careful." The words 'this time' being left off but hanging there unsaid.

Scott carefully transfers the contents of the MAPs bag to his medical satchel, preferring to minimize the amount of luggage he has to tote around. He nods his appreciation to Ms. Patton and looks to Warren.

"Less time we spend on idle chatter the better." he states flatly, "Whoever did this has a helluva head start on us. Best not to waste time. I'm ready when you are."

Having been up most of the night, Norman is mostly yawns until everyone arrives. He gratefully takes a coffee, thanking Ms. Patton.

"I was able to find some information on Rockport, though I'm uncertain if any of it is particularly relevant. It was originally a part of the Gloucester settlement, an area used primarily for lumber, especially for shipbuilding. A dock was built at Rockford Harbor in 1743 I believe, right on Sandy Bay. By the 1830's Rockford granite was being shipped to places all around the East Coast. It became a separate town from Gloucester in 1840.
In 1856, a Ms. Hannah Jumper led a temperance revolt throughout town, destroying any alcohol she or her mob could get their hands on. They banned it from the town. Some things never change, I suppose
."

"All in all, seems like a rather traditional place. I'm looking forward to visiting it. Should be quite the adventure!"

Warren Kaine:

Picking up a steaming cup of coffee, I look at Scott, "Might be best if we ride with Richard, keep cars to a minimum"
I'm not sure if my old jalopy has the stamina to go racing around the state, it's seen better days.

I blow steam from the cup, take a sip and almost curse aloud as the hot liquid catches my mouth, "Best we fix a place to meet up in Rockport...In case one or more of us gets delayed"
I'm thinking of a rather rickety looking motorcycle combination that was parked out side.

Alyssa gets on her motorcycle while Aunt Loosa climbs into the side car.
.
Richard takes the convertable Olds with Warren and Scott.
.
While Eddie drives his model T with Charles and Norman.
.
You set off and quickly escape the noise of the city and are in the Massachusetts country side. The Autumn air is cool while you drive and the winding roads can seem to lull you to sleep, you passed the city of Salem some 40 minutes back but you haven't seen anyone on the road in 20 minutes except for the 3 of you. The road turned from the newly paved concrete road to rocks and now to dirt.
.
Somewhere you made a wrong turn. At least you are all lost together. It must have been that decision to get off the main road to drive down on the coast line, but you haven't seen a coast line yet and you aren't sure you ever will. Most of you know what the ocean smells like with the salt spray in the air, but there is none of that here. Nothing but woods and a dirt road.
.

While all of you are standing around, hoping that good luck will shine down on you instead of trying to figure out the right way to go, 2 young boys of perhaps 12 or 13 are walking down the dirt road towards you. They are wearing blue jeans, buttoned up shirts and are carrying fishing poles.
.
Most of you notice the wheel on Eddie's Model T is looking pretty bad where the solid rubber tire is attached to the wheel.

Climbing out of her motorbike, Alyssa removes her helmet and rests it on the bike, fixing her goggles up to her forehead. Alyssa slowly moves towards the two boys, "I'm terribly embarrassed to admit, but we're quite loss. Is Rockport isn't too far from here I hope?" With a welcoming smile, Alyssa bends down to the same height, "'Would you kindly dear?

Aunt Loosa joins Alyssa

Well my dears, do I really look like a gangster or a moll! she gives a little chuckle

My friends and me were hoping to spend the day by the sea but we seem to have got ourselves all turned around and higgeldy-piggeldy lost. Would you be so kind as to point this old lady in the right direction for Rockport? she leans closer to the boys and whispers conspiratorially Don't let the men-folk know, they get awful upset about asking for help or directions she winks and her smile beams down on the lads.

Seeing that Scott and Eddie have the wheel change well under control, I spend a few moments kicking the other wheels.
"These look okay for a time, but I wouldn't trust them too far".

Aside from the snoring, Norman remained largely quiet during the drive. He had decided to take advantage of the chauffeuring and try to be well rested for when they arrived in Rockport.

He awakes with a jolt when Eddie stops the car and sets about fixing whatever problem it had. The librarian gets out and joins his traveling companion, who by now had been joined by Scott.

"Looks rather nasty. Good think you have a spare." Norman makes several vapid comments that likely only serve to irritate the two men as they work. Despite this it is clear he is trying to help, however ineffectively.

He see's that the others are working on changing out a tire on the other car why the women are talking to two boys. Richard decides to walk over to where the women are talking to the boys to ensure that they are getting directions on how to find there way back to the main road and town.

Just as you are finishing up the tire, the two boys are making idle talk about when they went to the ocean earlier that summer, when the two of them began to grow, Their skin turned a brown hue and their shirts ripped off their bodies. The eyes for each boy moved and merged until each had only a single eye in their forehead. Their fishing poles turned into huge clubs as they continue to grow until they over 10 feet tall.

Charles starts beeping the car horn, "Come on guys lets get the hell out of here.".
The 2 shots from Richard and Eddie smack into the chest of the Cyclops on the left, he stumbles backwards and falls to the ground.
.
Warren's knife attacks miss badly, while Aunt Loosa cannot seem to get her chanting on track while Alyssa continues to pull on her arm dragging her towards the motorcycle.
.
the Cyclops swings his club down on Warren.

Warren Kaine:

"Son of a bitch!!" I yell as a dud mortar round hits the ground alongside me. The tall German is pulling back the bolt on his machine gun, I scream "C'mon boys just a few more yards and we are home!"
A second German falls to several well placed rifle shots. To my rear an officer keeps blowing his whistle and screaming something unintelligable.
Slightly to my rear a small coloured lady dressed in a French uniform keeps chanting something in French.
I draw back my arm and thrust my knife forward, hoping this time for better luck.

Before anyone else can act Richard's gun goes off putting a bullet in the arm of the 2nd one. Then as Aunt Loosa keeps chanting, the Cyclops begins to shrink down, the eyes separate and young boy returns, but not before Warren impales him with a knife.

Warren begins to come out of his WWI flashback to see his knife stuck in a young boys chest, his life blood running out on his arms. His companion, with his fishing pole, laying still with 2 gun shot wounds to the chest.

Lowering the camera down from her face, Alyssa is horrified at what just happened before her, "Oh my god." She climbs out of the motorcycle with the keys still in the bike, and runs toward Warren's side. "You okay there?" as Alyssa rests her hand on his shoulder, she glances between the wounds on the boys and Warren. "Wha... 'wha should we do? Should we help? Eddie recovers quickly and races to the fallen boys. "Of course we've gotta help them!" he shouts. "Maybe we can still save them!" He checks the one he had shot to see if it's not too late; if it is, he goes to the other one instead. Working quickly, he manages to stop the bleeding from one of the grievous wounds and heal much of the damage.

Aunt Loosa rushes over to the boys, muttering under her breath moun embisil ak zam yo and shooting dark looks at Richard and Warren

We need get these boys to doctor or hospital, you hear me now! she looks at the others around her. She then opens her bag and pulls out a small knife and deftly cuts a small lock of hair from each boy and wraps each into a twist of paper.

She then takes 2 small vials and takes a small sample of blood from both of them, all the while muttering Such a waste, such a waste, your poor boys.

When she is done she places the envelopes and folders back into her bag and claps her hands briskly Now! Now! Get these boys to a car she stands up and heads over to Alyssa and her motorcycle combo.

Looking at the others who have scrambled around the other boy who was shot, Alyssa looks down at the poor boy with Warren as she watches the blood pooling out of him. Guilt washing her over, "Help me here Texas," as Alyssa shakes Warren's shoulder. Still awkwardly holding the camera, Alyssa slings the large clunky camera over her shoulder, and tries her best helping the poor boy.

Alyssa laid the boy carefully on his back and ripped open his shirt, popping a few buttons in urgent motion. With the signs of violence on this innocent looking boy, Alyssa grabbed one of her spare camera lens cloth from her bag, and wiped away all the excess blood from the chest. "We'll need proper bandages to cover his wound or else his lung will collapse," Alyssa looking over at Warren

Warren Kaine:

I shake my head as the images of a mud covered part of France dissolve to be replaced by the sight of the two small boys covered in blood and with the hilt of my knife sticking out the chest of one of them. No Germans, no trenches, nor roar of rifle, machine gun, and artillery, just two small very dead boys.
As I look horrified, a familiar voice sounds in my ears and a hand grasps my shoulder.
Previously Alyssa said:   "Help me here Texas,"
"Jordie!!" I turn quick but it's not her, simply the leather motorcycle helmeted photographer Alyssa.
"For a moment there I thought you were someone else. She had a habit of calling me 'Texas'"

As you run to the fallen boys the first one with the 2 gun shot wounds is laying on the ground, not moving. His eyes staring up into space.
The 2nd one with the knife impaled slumps to the ground, blood gurgling from his mouth, blood flowing from the wound.
.
Scott comes out of his temp insanity of seeing the Cyclops and sees the massive amounts of blood gushing from the boy.
Scott,I think your hemophobia will kick in here.
.
Everyone crowds around the 2nd boy doing first aid. Several successful attempts to stop the blood were successful, but it is evident that blood is filling his lung. He manages to gurgle out, "mama?" along with coughing up a lot of the red fluid, and then goes limp. He appears unresponsive at this point.

Aunt Loosa gathers herself and walks away from the two young corpses.

After a couple of moments she turns and faces the rest of the group.

These two children have family. They need to know what has happened to their children, to their brothers. They will need to bury them and to grieve.

Do you become so quickly the monsters that you pursue!
she turns to Eddie

You're a policeman, do the laws and oaths you swore mean so little. You should report this.....crime scene. It may not be necessary to tell the whole truth, for few would believe it but at the very least you need to report it, in whichever way is necessary.

You could say we became lost en route to the seaside, which is the truth and came upon the scene of a brutal, senseless murder and are doing our civic duty in reporting it. Your words as a police officer will carry more weight.

We cannot just bury these poor boys and leave their families to worry.

She turns to Richard Yes, I do have some experience with mysticism. I can't answer how Phil knew our whereabouts but given some time I might make an educated guess. The transformation of the boys was an illusion, the creatures weren't real but you all believed they were. I recognised this and was trying to break the illusion but alas my efforts were achieved too late. there is a long pause Whoever's knife that is, take it and clean it or throw it in the sea, it's a direct link. she then turns back to Alyssa

Make yourself useful and photograph the boys and the area, we may need it as evidence.

Once you are done I would like to examine the boys before we leave.

Ben,I want to search the boys for anything that would allow them to be used in this manner/focus for spell casting - a mark, a tattoo, a scar/brand, they both wear the same pendant anything like that. Spot hidden and/or Occult rolls below: Spot Hidden[75]:[dice]0[/dice] Occult[90]:[dice]1[/dice]

However, when you were trying to break the spell, either the person casting the spell was extremely weak (IE. Low Power) or was far away. Richard,if you look at your character sheet, its below Idea and Luck. Yours is 75% so you passed. Basically you know this is a bad idea, but you can't stop yourself. If you pass you know, this is bad. If you fail, you convince yourself of some other story that lets you do it anyway, but later when you think about it, you usually regret it. Similar to a young boy stealing something. Or doing something else they "know" is wrong, but do it anyway.

"It's alright." Norman does not sound offended. After what he had just witnessed, it was hard to begrudge Warren his reaction.

He turns to Aunt Loosa. "With all due respect Madame, we are outsiders in Rockport. Depending on how insular the community is, even the word of a police officer may be looked at with some suspicion. I'm not certain returning them is the best idea." Suddenly a thought occurs to him, and his face regains some color.

"Though this Phil is not from the area either, correct? Perhaps we can use that to our uh, advantage. If we can find the boy's parents, we might be able to convince them that one of the boys described Phil as their attacker before expiring. If it spreads to the entire town that he is a murderer, It might help us to track him down, yes?"

I also agree with Norman because Phil was ultimatley responsible for this and making the community aware of Phil will just help keep the community safer even if it does not lead us to him any sooner the community will be aware and supscious of him if he approaches anyone. The question now is what story do we tell the town and their parents that will be believed and not get us incarcerated?"

Eddie lowers his head in shame. "We're going to need to get our story straight before we say anything to anyone," he says. "There are two bullets in one of those boys from two different guns, one of them mine. Any story we tell about one guy doing this is going to fall apart. Now, we could claim that Phil was one of them, and that he was the one chiefly responsible, which is actually true. Even so, those bullets could still be tied back to our guns. What do we do then? Or we could tell the truth. Then I'd have to arrest several of us, myself included. But I guess we might be able to get declared insane and avoid prison."

Warren thinking:   Hmm, must have gone deeper that I thought
For a moment the dead boys image blurs and is replaced by a shimmering figure dressed in a German military uniform. I shake my head clear of the madness and turn to the others still involved in the debate of what to do with the bodies.
"I've been a journalist long enough to guess how this will pan out if we do the 'right; thing. At the best the cops will lock us up as possible suspects, at worst the community, led by the grieving parents, will string us up without trial"

Once again I stare at the knife,
Warren thinking:   What did she mean 'link', link to what?
I turn towards the old lady, "You wanna go tell the parents what happened here. Fine, but I'll be on my way. At the moment, if this was Phil's work..." I point at the corpses, "...then I guess he's one touchdown up. Involve the cops and the locals and this game is over"

Scott avoids looking directly at the grisly corpses at his feet and nods solemnly at Warren's words.

"Warren's right." he agrees, "We don't even know who these boys are. How are we supposed to find their families? Carry their bodies into the town square and ask? Two bullet holes and a knife wound and these folks are going to what? Believe some concocted story about a guy named Phil that no one round here has ever seen? A bunch of strangers?"

He crosses his arms and levels his gaze at the old woman.

"I vote we hide the bodies." he frowns. "When we find Phil we can bring him to justice and then tell the families. Until then all we have a shaky alibi and an even crazier account of the truth."

Warren Kaine:

I smile at Scott,, weel the nearest thing to a smile that I can muster.
Warren thinking:   At least one of them is thinking straight, this is what happens when you bring a preacher and a crusader to the party,
I look at the others, even the pale faced Charles who seems determined to stay as far away from all this as possible, as if by maintaining his distance he disassociates himself from any guilt.

"Look let me say this" I gesture at the bodies, noting the way that Scott keeps his eyes firmly averted from the carnage, "This is bad, real bad, but think on this." I turn my gaze to Richard, "You were there in the cellar, and helped drag me out, At the hospital, did you try and explain to the hospital authorities that I had been stabbed by a possesed, self wielding knife, that just sprang from the floor and stuck itself in my chest? A ghost knife driven by a curse or something"

I look around for a place to hide my knife,
Warrenn thinking:   What the hell did she mean 'link'? Link to the crime, or link to Phil through some kind of magickry?
"No, I guess you didn't. If you had we wouldn't be here now, would we? Probably be banging our heads on some padded wall somewhere, and old man Corbitt, if you could call him a man, would still be strutting around Boston drinking the blood of children."

I shake my head,
Warren thinking:   On on the other hand the others would still be alive
"And that's what will happen if we try and explain this" [/color]Again I gesture at the bodies, noting some flinching amongst the group, "And I sure dont fancy a long rest in one of the states assylums"

I step back towards the cars, "So, has anyone got a spade?"

Silence falls over everyone, the group seems split on what to do, some want to lie to the authorities the other want to just hide the evidence and run. Some stay out of the discussion completely realizing the negatives of both sides.

A siren can be heard in the distance and it sounds to be coming your way from the direction you came from.

"We found them like this when we got lost on our way from Boston to Rockport," says Eddie quickly as he removes the used shell casing from his revolver and sticks it in his shirt pocket, then puts a spare bullet in the empty chamber and holsters his revolver. "We stopped and tried to help them, but it was too late. One of the boys, as he was dying, described one of the men who attacked them. One of you who knows what this Phil bastard actually looks like can pass on the description. Wouldn't surprise me if he called the cops on us. We can't leave now. Innocent people stay and meet the authorities. Guilty people flee. Maybe they'll have some respect and trust for me, seeing as I'm a fellow lawman."

Looking longingly back at the car, Norman sighs. "I believe Off...Eddie has it right. If we leave now we'll be natural suspects to these murders when we arrive in Rockport, and no doubt the police will come calling sooner or later. Facing the authorities now strikes me as the best of our rather awful options.

"But we'll need a reason for why we're all visiting this town. We're a rather uh, diverse group. "

My mind conjures up an image of his and his supercillious smile, "Try and keep the story together, and make sure that someone keeps an eye on Charles over there. In case he suddenly gets an attack of guilt and decides confession is good for the soul"

I turn to Loosa, the sirens getting closer by the minute, "What exactly did you mean - Link?"

OOC,ok, I'll see if I can answer some of your questions. Between when the 1st shots went off, you guys got over the shock of shooting 2 boys, about 5 attempts of first aid, finally giving up, then going through the arguing of trying to decide what to do, it was close to 15 mins. Easily enough time for someone to call the police and have them take the 5 min drive where they thought they heard the shots. But the main reason was because you guys were bogged down and couldn't come to a decision so I thought I'd force the issue. As for not seeing the bodies, he is still 30 feet from, you, there are 7 people and 2 cars between him and the bodies. I had him make a spot hidden roll and he fumbled. hey it happens to the best of us also. But that doesn't mean I won't give him another chance to see them right now.

"Yes officer, definitely came from that general direction." Scott states, gesturing vaguely towards Rockport. "Is Rockport typically a wild kind of town? My agent assured me it was a cosmopolitan town, perfect place to showcase my most recent works. Guess this motley crew of Bohemians couldn't fool you, eh? Scott Bowen, artiste." he puts particular emphasis on the 'e'. "I'm a painter by trade. I dabbled in the Dada movement but have matured to surrealism. Are you familiar with Limbour? Masson? Dali? No? Well surely you've heard of Breton!"

He cradles his elbow in one hand while he free hand wags wildly as he speaks in his rapid, stream-of-consciousness style that seems to roll out over the group in waves.

"It's really quite a revolutionary movement officer! The most fascinating thing to come out of France since Cubism really! See the surrealist attempts to juxtapose the visceral, almost sensory imagery of the dream state with the content of the everyday world. It's symbolism really, a thin metaphor to represent the tension inherent in the mankind's loyalty to both science and spirituality."

"Oh it's so fortuitous that we ran across you when we did! I'll confess that this rather rustic[/b] environment was playing havoc with my nerves! It's just so good to have to someone to talk to. These rubes aren't exactly sterling conversationalists."

I return the knife to its scabard after all if it links us to Phil it can also link Phil to us, if he can use it to find us then we can use it to find him.

"We had better get rid of the bodies and get out of her fast before he can return with his friends" I turn to Scott, "Feeling pleased with your story fella? Couldn't think of a false name, just had to give him your real one. Hell you may as well have given him your address"

He cradles the limp body in both arms and heads back towards one of the cars, trying to ignore the disconcerting way the boy's head lolls back and forth with the rhythm of his gait. You find a nice shaded area to rest the boys in. Without a proper spade, the best you can manage is a shallow grave. You are able to cover up most of the blood on the road as it is rather loose dirt. An average passer by would think it automobile fluid more than blood.

Like as if the blood was only substance that muddy her conscience. Alyssa reasons with herself, "They were as real as we would like them to be. That a wound from their clubs would be just as painful and convincing as we had shot them." By this very logic, Alyssa was afraid to admit this herself.

Usually Illusions are a local spell only affecting people in the area, which explains why the cop wasn't affected, he wasn't there when the spell was cast.

Aunt Loosa,You know that an illusion this complex and detailed would definetely need line of sight to accomplish. But when you did the dispel on the 2nd half of the illusion, he did not feel close. You have heard of people being able to use animals as an avatar, to see through them, and even cast through them, but it almost always resulted in the death of the animal.

"Before we go into town," says Eddie, "we should look to see if we can find Phil's tracks. I don't know if he had to be nearby to create his illusions - I don't even know how it's possible - but he seems the sort who wants to stick around and watch his nasty handiwork."

Well Mr. Kane, I have been thinking on these illusions.

Firstly it requires some skill to blend two illusions together, to build one on the foundation of the other.

Also, to my knowledge and experience, to control complex illusions such as these, moving illusions with sounds, would require the caster to see us.

However, when I dispelled the cyclops illusion I had no sense that the caster, this Phil to be near by. I think that he was casting through an avatar, a proxy. It is unusual and again displays quite some skill and ability.

I think that the dead crow over there, is more than likely the poor creature that he used for this purpose - they rarely survive the ordeal.

Finally, to answer your question about a link - which it now appears is redundant. I initially meant a link to the crime, however, had this been a true killing, initiated via magic then there could quite possibly have been created a link between Phil and the knife. It is hard to say - blood magic is very powerful and from what I have seen today Phil appears to be quite an accomplished mage. Whether he needs that link or not is hard to say. He managed to find us and cast his spells, even though we were lost. Perhaps he already has a link to one or more of you that have encountered him in the past?

Things to ponder, hmm?

Warren Kaine:

I chew my bottom lip in thought at the words of Loosa.
Warren thinking:   Like Sonnys trumpet perhaps?
I nod my head, "Yeah I saw the dead bird. Seems to have just died"

I take a long drag on my cigarette and look towards Eddie, "Already thought of that. But there is nothing, no sign of anyone, nothing but a dead bird"

I toss the cigarette to the floor and with my heel rub it out, "Best be away before Phil sends us another greetings card". I move towards the car.
Warren thinking:   Sure glad I never got rid of my knife

I smile a wry smile as I pull the car door open, "Coming?"

Norman listens with rapt attention as Loosa so casually explains the workings of magic as if it is a common topic for her. Despite the gravity of the situation, her words do much to ease the librarian's mental discomfort. Despite the dangers, this was fascinating. Magic and odd creatures and illusions. It was like something out of a fairy tale.

He adjusts his glasses before speaking. "I uh, do believe we should head into town as quickly as possible. Any hope of stealth we may have possessed is now gone. I wonder if this was Phil's idea of a welcome for us."

He heads back towards Eddie's car.

You pile into your 2 cars and motorcycle, and continue down the dirt road. It isn't long it comes up beside a railroad track and then a couple miles up the road it ends in a cross road with a rail station. An old wooden sign with the words 'Rockport Rail Station' hangs on the building.
.
You see people working around the train yard, and a man is sitting at a window at the station, otherwise the place looks pretty deserted. There is no train at the station. The crossroad goes both the left and the right.

Charles Feel a strong discomfort at the thought of Loosa's suggestion that birds might have been used. It wakes his fantasy and he thinks about the possibility of birds flying over them and watching their way. It feels a lot worse to have mages over you head then on the steady ground, even if it wouldn't make a difference. To keep the possible panic away he tries to breath slowly and bring himself together so that he can focus on what the group can and will do next in this search for the cause. He seems to calm down a bit and come to senses but with a nagging feeling in his gut.

You drive down the paved road for a small bit and it runs into a larger road. Warren doesn't see Phil, but he does see some street signs. The road you are on isRailroad, the cross road which is larger has a sign that says Main St and stretches off to the left and right. On the other side of Main a road continues but angles to your left (so if you were going South, it is going SE) with a street sign Broadway.
.
While Railroad Ave was mainly empty Main street is filled. Mostly with 2 story residential homes. Most look 20-30 years old, but all kept in very good condition. Immediately to your right at the corner of Railroad and Main is a Lumber and Hardware store. That is the only non-residential building you see.

The street looks like any other New England coastal town of residential homes. Nothing special at all. School has not started, so you see a few kids running around, and people walking the streets.
.
The sign on the store says "Smith's Lumber and Hardware" The building is average size and you did notice it has a high 6 foot wooden fence around the back of the building.
.
As you walk into the building you hear a bell ring as you swing the door inwards, and step in. The inside of the building is lit, and looks abandoned. You see various tools and work equipment spread around the room. A counter with a cash register is at the back of the store.

Behind the lumber store is the 6' fence. With a boost or standing on anything you could see over it pretty easily. Behind the fence is vacant land.
On the South side of the store is a residential home, 2 story. You could easily see over the fence from a 2nd story window or the roof.

Eddie leaves the store with the others. "Definitely something hinky going on there," he says. "She seemed very surprised to see us, and that thing with the maps sounds ridiculous. I'm also wondering if there's something going on in that lumber yard."

Warren Kaine:

Leaving the store, I walk over to where Richard stands by the car, "So how do you want to play this?"

OOC:   Trying to move things along, you guys seem to be a bit stuck. If you feel you need some assistance, make an Idea check. If not, let me know your intentions. If you are going to stay in the store and talk to the lady there, continue on this thread. If you want to look or mess around with the back yard, we can start a new thread. If you want to hop in your cars and drive somewhere else, I'll start a new thread for that also. If you are splitting up, let me know and I can create different threads for each group.

Scott follows Richard and Warren out of the store and rubs his chin thoughtfully looking between the two men.

"Well that was bizarre." he mutters, hitching a thumb over his shoulder towards the store. "I vote we make our way down towards the pier that was in the postcard. Seems as good a place to start as any."

Charles realizes that the others are about to leave again. Feeling like he's not clear on what's about to happen next he walks after the others against the car.

Richard responds to Warren "I am not sure what is going on here, that women was making a lobster trap big enough to hold a large man in the back, she also had a shed marked explosives back there but they may be normal for a hardware store out here in the sticks like this. I say we go check into the Woods House and see if we can find any normal people hanging around maybe they will be a little more informative."

"I got directions to the art convention," says Eddie, "but I was told there are no maps of Rockport. Strange, that. Explosives could be normal. People use them to blow up stumps all the time. Yeah, let's check in first."

Finding a hammer he can grip comfortably, Norman pays for it and leaves the shop. Hopefully it won't come to him having to use it, but he desires at least a little protection.

"I have to agree. I found the woman a tad odd. She was nice enough, I suppose. But she seemed very surprised to have business. Perhaps it was just because we are outsiders."

FYI, you don't have to give me direct directions to a place, just say, I'm going back to the Hardware store, that is fine.
