OOC: Cast of Characters

August 1921, Boston.
A dead guard at the abandoned chapel, a stolen statue revealing strange numbers and a burnt postcard. A strange night sighting by a Harvard professor only 2 days later has led to too many coincidences to ignore.
Dr. Chambers is forming another MAPS team, and you have been called.

OOC: Cast of Characters

Post by BenTheRat »

This thread is for creating and discussing the characters you'll be playing in The Star on the Shore
We'll use standard character creation from the book for generating stats. Please make the following rolls:

Roll 3d6 each for STR, CON, POW, DEX, and APP.
Roll 2d6+6 each for SIZ and INT.
Roll 3d6+3 for EDU.

Personal Wealth will largely be determined by your character concept and Keeper fiat.

You can use Invisible Castle to make your rolls, both for character creation and in the game. You'll need to register and log in there in order to make entries in the Note section describing what you're rolling, but it's free. In the Character Name box, put the character's name, and be sure to use the same spelling consistently to make it easier to look up old rolls. For example: John Doe. Use The Rats Haunting for the campaign name.

Those are the only rolls you need to make for character creation. You are free to distribute the 3d6 rolls among the five stats that are rolled on 3d6, as well as to choose which 2d6+6 roll goes to SIZ and which to INT. EDU can be raised by making your character older. If you're still not satisfied with your rolls, let me know and we'll work something out. If your rolls are abnormally low, I may permit a re-roll of the entire set.

You'll also need to decide on your character's age. The minimum age allowed is EDU+6, but you can always choose to make your character older. For every 10 full years above the minimum, you get +1 to your EDU (which also gets you an extra 20 occupational skill points). However, for every full 10 years above 40 (i.e., starting at age 50), you must reduce one of the following stats by 1: STR, CON, DEX, or APP.

Your character has the following derived stats:
Idea: INT x 5
Luck: POW x 5
Know: EDU x 5 (maximum of 99)
Damage Bonus: Calculate STR+SIZ and consult the following table

12 or less: -1d6
13-16: -1d4
17-24: +0
25-32: +1d4
33 or more: +1d6
Maximum Hit Points: (CON+SIZ)/2 (round fractions up)
Maximum Magic Points: POW
Starting Sanity: POW x 5

Skills:
I generally disregard the the guidelines for occupations and and permit players to apply skill points to whatever skills they feel most suit their character concept. You get 20 x EDU skill points plus 10 x INT skill points. For the purpose of this game work out the two sets of skill points and then add them together. I'm trusting you to create a well rounded, believable character guided by your concept not a specific career.

While I generally disregard occupations if you describe yourself in terms of your career then please take a moment to look over the associated skills, it would for example be unusual for Dr Jones not to be competent at Medicine and first aid.

The only skill that cannot be raised is Cthulhu Mythos, which always starts at 0%. The other skills have base levels of 1% or higher, and the points you spend add to those base levels. Use the skill list provided on the Character sheet.

Starting skills should not be higher than 75 without a good reason which should be clear in your character concept. Older, more experienced characters are more likely to have exceptionally high skills, so they'll get more leeway in this area than youngsters. In any event, you shouldn't have any skill higher than 90 to begin. Spend all your skill points during character creation, as they're of no use once the game is underway.

Any questions PM me.

If the above seems overly daunting I'll happily generate a character for you either based on your concept or not.

We will be posting the characters in this thread after I approve them. Just send them to me and I'll verify they are ok and then you can post them here.

If you are playing a character carried over from the Rat's Haunting, I'll roll skill increases for you and post them.

Name: Richard Rahl -- DrVendetta
Age: 39
Sex: Male
Occupation: Grifter
Birthplace: Knoxville Tenn

Appearance & Personality:
Image
Richard is 6ft tall and weighs in at 200lbs. His hair is jet black and he has dark green eyes. He has horrible burn scars that cover half of his face and most of his chest that do greatly subtract from his physical charisma. He always wears a long sleeve shirt buttoned to the top to help try to hide as much of his scars as possible. What he lacks in physical charisma he makes up with in his ability to bring people at ease with his smooth easy speaking voice. He rarely shows emotion and always tries to get people to become comfortable around him which is not always easy with his facial scars.

Background:
Richard was born the son of a Gypsy Grifter. His mother used her occult wares and powers in many of her grifts. He never new his father and received no formal schooling as they were always moving from place to place. Being brought up in his mothers grifter clan he was taught to read and write by his mother and how to handle himself by the older boys and younger men of the clan. He would often be left at libraries by his mother while she would be out working her trade. She felt that libraries where a safe place to leave him and it offered him the opportunity to expand his knowledge of the world to help him become a grifter with a good knowledge base and the ability to research his grifts before launching them.

Phobias/mental disorders:
Clinical Vampirism, since your encounter with Corbitt, somewhere in your mind you believe that the drinking of the blood gave you the necessary courage, strength and steady hand to defeat Corbitt. Now if you see large amounts of blood, you must pass a Know test not to drink some, and when presented with a 'Life or Death' situation you may drink blood to gain 5% to your skill checks. You are embarrassed by this urge to drink blood and try to hide it. You secretly drink blood on occasions as it makes you feel powerful and it gives you a rush, sometimes followed by something sexual. Followed by guilt later.

Name: Warren Kaine -- Priest
Age: 31 (Now August 1921)
Sex: Male
Occupation: Newspaper Reporter
Yearly Income:
College, Degrees:
Birthplace: Arkham, Mass

Appearance & Personality:
Image
Although he still carries a hint of innocence, Warren’s mental scars from the war give him a cynical, sometimes aggressive personality. He has developed little tolerance for fools, or those he deems fools. To those who knew him in the years prior to his going to Europe, he seems to have begun displaying a dangerous tenacity for finding the truth, that will either see him become a great crusading newspaper reporter, or just another corpse found in a dark alley.

Background:
From an early age Warren had only one ambition, to be a journalist. His uncle, Mathew, had worked as a reporter on various newspapers including the Santa Fe Herald and had been part of the reporting team that had covered the death of Billy the Kid in 1881. Although he had grown up far from the west that had so filled the tales of his uncle, Warren was filled with determination to not only be a newspaper reporter, but the best.
After school he had begun the slow climb from print assistant/janitor of a local broadsheet, which had much potential but made little effort to join the big boys, to second string reporter on local sporting events. But, as he was constantly told, even the best has to start somewhere.
Then the war in Europe had intervened, in 1916 he volunteered to fight for his country against the insidious forces of the German Kaiser. For over a year he survived the horrors of the western front, eventually returning to the states with a host of memories, a few odd scars, the worst of which is a livid scar that runs down the left side of his face from hairline to jaw, which still itches occasionally especially when the weather is changing, and recurring nightmares about being trapped below ground amongst the corpses of those he had known over there who never made it home.
Three years have passed since then, and his old ambitions have resurfaced. One good story and he could be made…

hemophobia,or more commonly known as blood phobia. Large amounts of blood cause you to freeze, this became apparent on the job. Your psychiatrist has ordered you to face your fears and recommends you attend any medical treatment with a lot of blood, and a procedure called radionics. He has leased you a small black box you strap to your arm when feeling the fear and it helps you perform normally. So when you see blood (large amount), you must take a sanity test. If you fail you stand there and can do nothing for 1-6 rounds. If you pass, make an idea check (75) if you pass you may strap on your radionics box (1 round) and then perform normally, if you fail you stand there stunned for 1-3 rounds and then may act normally.

Appearance & Personality: Scott is an easy going guy but keeps his head in the worst of situations.

Background: Scott comes from a poor family in the Maine coast where his father worked as a fisherman. When he turned 18 and the war broke out, Scott enlisted into the army where they made him a medic. He did his 4 years and got out. He saw some pretty horific things while in the military, and has sought out a simpler life since then taking up working on the docks in Boston. Times were hard and he got laid off at the docks and ended up at the Boston South-side Hospital working as a nurse.

Name: Norman Smith -- Silver Priest
Age: 32
Sex: Male
Occupation: Librarian
Yearly Income:
College, Degrees: Boston College, Library degree
Birthplace: Boston

Appearance & Personality: Despite his relative youth, Norman is a man who looks to have hit middle age early. Tall and slender, he wears thick glasses and a receding hairline. His clothing choices tend to be ill fitting suits, in a failed attempt at charm. He is a rather dull individual who would happily spend much of his time debating the intricacies of book organization, unaware of how little most people care for such things. Though rather unpleasant to be around, he is at heart a good person and loyal to his acquaintances.

Background: Born in Boston Just after New Year's 1889, Norman was the only child in a prominent and wealthy family. His parents were distant, emotionally abusive alcoholics, and so the lad quickly learned to keep quiet and cooperative if he did not want to be lashed out at. His one sole retreat was books, and he quickly proved a voracious reader.

A good student, Norman quietly made his way through school and into college where he pursued a library degree at his family's behest. His father had hoped he would go into law, but not even his threats and yelling could change Norman's mind. An embarrassment to the family, he was cut off. Though not the best outcome, it provided him with some relief. He finished up his degree and went to work at the Boston library. It was enjoyable work, though even his colleagues soon found him tiresome.

The war came and went, Norman to sickly and unassuming to be drafted, and life continued as normal. However, Things began to change a year ago. Norman began to feel a certain discontent that he cannot quite understand. Perhaps he desired to be a hero like the many brave men who have returned from the trenches of Europe. Slowly his reading habits shifted from dry historical texts to books relating to the occult and supernatural. He even participated in a few séances, and found himself impressed with the obviously fake events.

So it was that the faithful day came when he laid eyes upon the cryptic newspaper ad. Seeming to speak directly to him, Norman resolved to make his way there that very evening.

Re: OOC: Cast of Characters

Post by BenTheRat »

Name: Alyssa Ryan
Age: 23
Sex: Female
Occupation: Freelance Photojournalist
Yearly Income:
College, Degrees: Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts
Birthplace: Essex County, Massachusetts

Appearance & Personality:
Alyssa has an earthly scent with notes of honey, spice, cedar wood, and that heavy smell of musk. For the distinction and price of $49.95, of a perfume bottle the size of a table salt shaker. Her hair flowed pale gold with hint of brunette in her roots. With every laugh and smile, surrenders every person to their imagination; to an eternity that they would like to wake up every morning to that smell of brine left on the pillow. This, Alyssa predisposed anyone vulnerable to her favour.

Despite growing up in poverty, Alyssa carefully measures her sentences in highfalutin language, stressing importance to appear sophisticated. Alyssa can be pretentious and a flirt, however is good hearted and is determined to find the truth. Surprisingly, both Jordie and Alyssa mirror one another. Jordie is calm, cunning, and patient; and Alyssa is outgoing, resourceful, and persistent. In almost in everyway they paralleled one another, however, they both have a driven sense of justice. Alyssa approaches the matter by legal means and Jordie through vigilant manners. With the death of Jordie from The Rat’s Haunting, more and more of those memories goes through Alyssa’s mind, with Jordie’s old habits rubbing off on Alyssa.

Background:
Unlike most children who grew up with families, went to see the carnival, and get home before their favourite radio shows on summer vacation from school, Alyssa grew up at St. Aquinas’ Children’s Home. In the strict and disciplinary orphanage at Essex County, Massachusetts, there she met Jordan “Jordie” Lynch, who’ll prove to be a very close friend and only confidante. At the age of 16, Alyssa and Jordie escaped the orphanage after curfew, for the city life of Boston. There, they found shelter at a boarding home and paid their rent by taking various odd end jobs. By under the table means, they’ve acquired new names and documents for themselves, distancing others in finding out their past, wishing to start anew. Alyssa Ryan and Jordan Lynch: sisters to the very end bonded from youth. Presently, they both attend Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, however Alyssa has been noticing Jordie’s absence the last few days which raised suspicion.

Appearance & Personality: Eddie Donovan is a young Irish-American officer in the Boston Police Department. Standing only 5 feet 5 inches tall, he is nonetheless a powerhouse packed into a small frame. Eddie is dedicated to his work and values his integrity, refusing to take bribes when a number of other officers are on the take. He joined the police force both because his family have been cops since the 1860s and because he desires to protect those who cannot protect themselves due to his chivalrous nature.

Background: Eddie joined the police right out of high school, and he has stayed on the force ever since except for when he went to France to fight in the Great War in 1917-8. He felt bad about sitting on the sidelines during the Boston police strike in 1919, knowing that criminals were running rampant and innocents were in danger, but he couldn't bring himself to cross the picket line. Five months ago Eddie was called out to an incident on Norton Street that turned very deadly. He was badly injured but survived. Many of his friends were not so lucky.

Name: Luisa Goodman - Aunt 'Loosa'
Age: 65
Sex: Female
Occupation: Aunt/Guardian/Vodoo Queen
Yearly Income:
College, Degrees:
Birthplace: A Louisiana cotton plantation

Appearance & Personality:
Image

Aunt Loosa is a formidable old lady. She is quick to smile and laugh but doesn't suffer fools. She is very loyal to those close to her but will cut ties and take vengeance on those who cross her or those she holds dear.

Background:
Born and raised on a cotton farm in Louisiana, she and her family were emancipated after the abolition of slavery in 1865. The family stayed in Louisiana for several years, before she and her brother moved to New Orleans when she was 14.

During her time here she fell under the tutelage of an old vodoo queen/priestess who saw the potential in Luisa and trained her in the dark arts.

Luisa and her brother stayed close until he was killed by a freak accident on the docks where he worked. Aunt Luisa brought up his 5 children as her own, with the help of the eldest son, Sonny. She did whatever was necessary to help make ends meet but she was well known as the local vodoo queen and she never went without, people would bring her gifts and presents and money.

Inventory
Property/Equipment carried on expedition:

Walking cane, a canvas apothecary's bag containing various bits and pieces required for vodun incantations etc.

Known Spells:
Dispel,For non-mythos spells you can recognize them for what they are and dispel them. This includes generic type spells as well such as summoning, and illusions. If you pass an occult roll or Cthulhu mythos roll for mythos spells, you understand how it works and may attempt a dispel. This is a power vs power resistance check. The closer you are to the spell the more bonuses you have. The further away the caster is, the more bonuses you have. (ie. someone curses someone, and a week later they come to you for the dispel, the caster could be half a continent away.) So this isn't always a combat ability, but it can be. *This costs only 1 sanity to use unless you get a critical failure in the resistance roll, then it can be much higher depending on the other caster. And it only costs the sanity if you get to the resistance roll. If you fail the occult roll to recognize what you are dispelling, then it costs no sanity, other than the sanity of just seeing the spell like everyone else. Magic Point Cost: Varies depending on spell cost. Sanity Cost: 1* To cast: Successful Occult/Mythos roll then Resistance roll vs caster
Healing,This is mainly why people came to you. Given a lock of their hair (or skin, or blood, etc...) you can brew up a healing potion (1 hour casting time). The potion only has potency for 1 day but will heal 1d4+1 hit points. It will only work 1 timer per week on a person,, and is not instantaneous, it heals over an hour or 2. But this is in addition to any first aid or medical. Magic Point Cost: 1d3 Sanity Cost: d2-1 To cast: Successful Occult roll (roll when they drink it. Crit failure can cause harm)
Good luck charms,You can make small good luck charms for people. Again adding their hair (or skin or blood) you can create a good luck charm. (takes 1 hour to make 1). They last until used up. They have 3 uses in them, if the players rub them before using them, they get +5% on their skill check. Can only make 1 charm per week for 1 person. To make it, just tell me you are making it, and I roll. If you get your occult or less (90) it works fine. 90-95 it doesn't work, 96-00 it actually curses them. You can also make Curse charms that work opposite. You can't say it improves your chances by 5% just say if you rub it, it will help you do things easier. Leave it vague. But you don't know if it really worked or not. But 9 times out of 10 they work great. Magic Point Cost: 1d3 Sanity Cost: d2 To cast: Successful Occult roll (secret roll)
Seance,This one is a lot more vague. It has a lot to do with where and what you are trying to accomplish. If you are summoning a specific spirit say Sonny where he died, it is not very difficult. Because you knew Sonny and you are at the spot he died at. But if you are just trying to summon a random spirit at a random location things get dicier. I have a "chart" in my head I'll write down but you don't really know. You are use to summoning spirits of lost loved ones for a final goodbye. That was pretty easy and even then it didn't always work. If the killer died at the same spot, sometime you would get them instead. It is very draining on you and usually the next day you have a hard time doing things. If a "Cthulhu god" was to answer your call it would kill you. But if you get a friendly spirit you can get information, which is what this spell is designed for. * Sanity is only 1 to cast, but depending on what you summon it can go up to all you have. Ie. if you connect with Cthulhu's mind it would drain all your sanity instantly. If you only get humans its 1d3 unless they are a caster themselves, then it could be more depending on how powerful they are. The Strength drain you get back on a 1 per hour rest you get afterwards. If you drop to 0, strength you pass out and it takes 1 per 2 hours of rest you need. I roll the d3, so you don't know exactly how much you have left. Magic Point Cost: 1 + 1 per question asked Sanity Cost: 1d3* Strength drain: 1d3+1 per question asked. To cast: Successful Occult roll, with unknown modifiers.

Name: Charles Francis
Age: 30
Sex: Male
Occupation: Executive Assistant
Yearly Income: -
College, Degrees: University of Notre Dame (History)
Birthplace: Manchester, New Hampshire

Appearance & Personality:
Good-looking in a thoroughly unremarkable way, Charles is distinguished above all by his brisk, efficient manner.

Background:
After graduating with a degree in History from Notre Dame he rapidly realized that spending his life in must old libraries was not for him. Wishing to see the world, he travelled to France, hoping to make use of his knowledge of languages to find work as a translator. He arrived, however, days after the War broke out in Europe. He chanced to meet a wealthy compatriot, the businessman Edwin G. Gilligrass, at the Les Deux Magots café and was promptly hired as Gilligrass's executive assistant. They returned to the United States shortly thereafter, and Charles has worked alongside the renowned industrialist since then, helping him with his correspondence and business issues, accompanying him in his travels and generally halping him to run the firm. In the course of this work, he has also visited Germany and London.

In November of 1920, however, the sudden death of Charles's parents left his distraught leaving him virtually unable to function. He was taken violently ill, to the point of doing permanent damage to his system (hence his low physical ability scores). He took an indefinite leave of absence and has, since then, sought to distract himself in many different ways - and mostly failing. He is now in Boston for a few weeks, staying at the house of a college friend's family, while trying to decide his next move.
