IC Ch 8: Off to Visit the Church

"Oh, well said, Mr. Smith, to volunteer like that," compliments Alyssa. "But let's stick together."

"I agree," says Eddie. "If everyone's ready, let's see what's down there. Get ready to shine a light in the opening." With his revolver in one hand, he crouches by the trapdoor and quietly opens it.

"I think it would be best to all stay together" says Richard

You open the hatch and you see a small tunnel leading down into darkness. It is bricked, with a ladder attached. As you shine your light into the tunnel it goes down 20' to a tunnel below. It is damp and wet. There is about an inch of water covering the floor.

"Good grief!" exclaims Alyssa. "My Perforated Oxford's will be ruined," she mutters, and then, realising the gravity of their predicament (a water stained shoe is of little account), "Which one of you gentlemen goes first?"

Richard says as he starts down the ladder "I will go first keep a light down there so I can see till I get down and get my light on"

Eddie nods. "I'll go second," he volunteers. "Whoever brings up the rear should close the door behind us. That way, if someone else comes down here, they won't know anyone else is here."

"I'm next then," says Alyssa. Mr. Smith, you close the trapdoor?"

When Richard reaches the bottom of the stairs he pulls out his flashlight and his pistol then looks down the tunnels to see what he can see.

Richard descends the ladder that is sturdier than it looks. As you are almost to the bottom you can see that at the bottom it opens into a roughly circular room 10-12 feet in diameter. 3 tunnels extend out from the room in different directions. The walls are damp but do not appear to be the source of the water. An ocean smell pervades the area and the ceiling of the roof is covered in black silt.
It is very quiet down here, the city noise has silenced, and every step you make reverberates through the tunnels.

The back suits Norman just fine. He closes the trapdoor behind him and makes his way down the ladder.

"At least one of these tunnels must go out to the sea," says Eddie. "After that creature we saw, I suggest we try to head in the opposite direction." He tries to feel for a breeze in order to determine which way that is.

"And," says Alyssa, looking up at the roof covered in black silt, "these tunnels are tidal, so we need to be sure of our exit." She takes a slow turn round the chamber. "The splash of my steps echoes through the tunnels. If there's something down here with us it'll soon know of it."

Richard replies looking down at the depth of the water in the tunnels "If they are tidal then we need to follow the tunnel that has the lowest amount of water as it will be leading away from the sea."

Aunt Loosa has followed her friends in quiet contemplation as she thinks on the symbol.

Yes she says we really don't want to be down here when the tide turns. I think we should mark the walls so we can find our way back here if we need to.

"Does anyone have anything to mark the walls with?" ask Richard as he looks through his satchel for his hand pick

"Any thoughts on the symbol, Aunt Loosa?" Alyssa takes the venerable ladies elbow, as if they were to promenade in the park.

"Mr. Rahl, I have some chalk," she says, fishing out a white stick from her Sam Browne belt, with its pockets full of photography paraphernalia.

You study the tunnels closely looking for some patern of where the water seems to rise or drop but cannot tell which is which.
The water does seem to be stagnant and still.

OOC:   Ben the first time I did this the post was showing me a dice roll of 0 using the dice= button so I did the second one with the dice button then the first number changed from 0 to 78 in the post. Not sure whats going on but feel free to use the 78 as my spot hidden roll and ignore the second try roll
