[Scene III] At the Yard - Grimes...

Loindon 1924....A grisly killing in the East of the majestic, sprawling bulk that is London sends out investigators in the pursuit of a mysterious manuscript, a troubling revelation about the origins of the world and piecing together the derranged rantings of a 19th century English poet. Truly there were some things that man was not meant to know...

[Scene III] At the Yard - Grimes...

Post by Airbornexo »

Scotland Yard
London - 28th November 1932 - 7:03am

Image
The morning was not an improvement on the previous night. Both the weather hanging over London, and the mood hanging over Detective Grimes were black and stormy. Grimes' head whirled with the number of leads that he had and the total lack of sense that the murders made. Two seemingly unconnected victims, different parts of the city, different class of person...none of it seemed to fit. And then there was this nonsense about an old book, the others had seemed to latch onto it's significance to the case but Grimes was not so sure, normally motive for a murder so horrid went a little deeper.

He strode through the corridors of the yard, it was too early for his superiors to be in. He had at least an hour to himself, now perhaps he could follow a few leads quietly on his own...

Grimes heads to the front clerk and addresses the man in charge of any calls for investigation at the dogs the last couple of weeks. If non is present at the desk, he'll have a look by his lonesome. Wonder who the detective might be? He thoughts as he rounds a corner in the hallway.

While checking reports earlier in the morning he had had a look for bookstores and libraries as well as universities having reported burglaries and thefts of rare books. Knowing it was a stretch - he had done it halfheartedly.

A grim morning and no tea yet. He intends to take a round to the kitchenette in the detectives' office in a few blinks. Just have to check out that snooping detective first.

"Ah, morning to you. How're the kids? By the way, do you have the report on the Dogs Island disturbance two weeks ago. We sent some poor detective there to talk to the tenants... I was over there last night and really need to compare notes."

Police talk,Spending a point of cop-talk to gather some info on that dickens.

"Morning guv," The tired-looking detective sergeant nods to his senior, "Not sure about the Isle of Dogs, last night we got wind of it and Atherton sent it your way. He'll be in a ten, but I'd be off before he comes in...one of his moods again! If you leave me the notes I can type it up for you?" He goes to check the files and he and Grimes spend the best part of half an hour pouring through the recent activity.

"Got it sir! Look he's not one of ours thats why we've struggled to find it. He came in a couple of weeks ago and made nice, so as not to tread on our toes. Says 'ere, he's a PI working out of Oxford for some landed gentry - the Dagworth family. His name is Jarman according to this, Mr. Myles Jarman, contracted to try to recover stolen property. His licence was in order, and he seemed like an efficient sort of fella the notes say. They waved him on and gave permission, provided he shared leads if he found anything pertinent."

"Smashing work! So, the Dagworth family of Oxford, was it? And Myles Jarman checked for some stash, I guess." He repeats and jots down on his note pad. "Do we have the street for Jarman?" Grimes leaves his notes to the clerk to take care of. "Really appreciate the favour, officer." He turns to take the rounds to see what his friends have uncovered over the morning.

He tries to telephone Felix' office and places a line to The Strand University to get in touch with professor Blexham. The pretext for the line is to summon the professor in an identification of some found books.

"Nothing listed for Jarman, just a small hotel in the city. Thanks sir, I'll be seeing you later, things to do!" he winks and scribbles down the address for Grimes and hands it over. Grimes reaches for the phone and after a moment with the university switchboard connects to the Professor...

"Yes, this is he." Grimes makes his introduction and sells his line to the Professor, who sounds agitated and frustrated. ""The police, what? Really the Yard, well I could come by this afternoon? No? Later on this morning then say 11?"

"Much obliged, professor. We'll be in the evidence cellar, aisle 4b." He rings off, not waiting for the operator at the switch to terminate the line. He gets his hat and escapes the corridors for a stroll to Sam's hunting grounds. Then if need be to see if Jarman still is at the hotel. Before leaving the Yard, he leaves a note for Atherton.

Got a meeting at 11AM. Prof. Blexham. If I am delayed, keep him waiting. Suspect in the recent slayings. Bookhounds suspicion.

OOC:   It will take Grimes around 30 minutes to get to Portabello Road, if the others are still there then I'll write you into that scene. Please watch this space.

Grimes decides against walking and takes the car. It lends some weight to his importance. And it might rain, what's new?

The car journey is short and as he pulls up on the Portabello Road he quickly spots the trio of investigators he has seconded, including his friend Sam, waiting for a taxi.
