Caverns - Dunwich, England
3:30 PM - Thursday, September 5, 1985

The blue box faded into nothingness with a wheezing, groaning sound. Then it was gone, as if it had never been there, leaving Chad, Leonek, and Tobias alone in the cave.

Chad felt uneasy watching the TARDIS disappear. With all that he had seen it was getting tougher not easier to adjust to all the oddities.

Tobias watches with absorbed interest as the tardis slowly vanishes from sight. "Amazing, truly amazing. The technology involved - if only- well, hopefully we'll bump into them topsides." And he makes a promise to himself. He turns to the others,
"Okay let's get the hell outta here."

Leonek watched on ruefully as the TARDIS vanished, wondering if that thing could possibly make any more noise.

He looks at the others and nods, confirming their aloneness in the hostile caves.

"So, do we run or sneak? I think speed to be the better part of valour now, no?"

Chad whispers to Leonek, "Do you know the whole route Leonek? Quickly yes, recklessly no. Now which way do we go?"

"I only know that there's a corridor going up and that it is the one to our right. I guess we'll see when we get there. I'll take point?"

Leonek starts down the passageway, quickly -not recklessly-, shielding his torch with one hand so that it doesn't give them away too quickly.

Leonek led Chad and Tobias through the central cavern and up the passage to the right, which rose gradually. At the end of this tunnel was a narrow stone stairway leading further upwards. It was only wide enough for two of them to walk side by side, so someone would have to bring up the rear.

OOC,Anyone going up the stairs, please roll Sneak. Also, please decide on a marching order. I take it that [b]Leonek[/b] is in the lead.

Tobias motions that he'll bring up the rear. He keeps a look out and listen for anything behind them.

Leonek took point, figuring it wiser to walk single file than in a bunch.

Leonek moved up the stairs first, followed by Chad and then Tobias. As Leonek ascended, he saw one of the creatures above him, gripping its spear and net. Fortunately, its back was to them, and it did not appear to have noticed them yet. Tobias was able to hear it breathing even before he caught sight of it.

OOC,No need for a Sanity roll; you've all seen this one before.

Leonek motions them to stop, conveying in a few gestures what was going on.


He slowly draws the knife from the sheath and readies to launch an attack as soon as Chad clears it.

Tobias silently pulls out the alien device and readies it. With the other two in front, he's afraid of hitting them so will wait until there's a clear shot; he stays in the shadows as a back-up surprise attack. Kind of thing.

Chad considers his options. The pistol report would echo thorough the whole cave, and he didn't want to give up all surprise just yet in a 3v1 fight. So Chad pulls his knife, and motions to Leonek and Tobias to attack, and rushes the beast with intent to kill.

Leonek flips the knife in his hand point down and darts forward silently.

Unfortunately, his attack is unbalanced and fails to cause harm to the creature.

Chad misses his awkward attempt to rush and stab the creature.

When there's a clear shot, Tobias points the gadget at the beast and 'fires' it.

Tobias had his best opening before Leonek and Chad closed with the thing, so he pointed the device at it and squeezed. Nothing happened. Was he holding it wrong? Was the wiring not quite right?

Leonek and Chad both stabbed at the creature, but their blades failed to connect. It finally became aware of their presence and hefted its spear, towering over them as it turned to face them. It held the high ground and was taller, but that height meant that Tobias could fire without much risk of hitting his companions. He readjusted the weapon, and this time an arc of sparkling blue energy shot out of the alien weapon and struck the fishman! However, it only dealt it a glancing blow. It bellowed with rage as it thrust its spear at Chad, narrowly missing.

OOC,[b]Chad[/b] and [b]Leonek[/b], you may act again if you wish. [b]Tobias[/b], you may try to fire again, which takes place at the top of the next round, after they attack but before the creature goes. The weapon does not use Handgun skill but rather has its own skill, Electric Gun, which has a base skill of 15%. You're close enough for point blank range, so that effectively doubles it to 30%. However, because of its alien nature it will only work on a roll of 1-2 on 1d6. Otherwise, it simply does not fire. You'll need to make this roll before you try the skill roll. If you do something other than shoot, the creature will get to go first.

Knife 25% Impale!,[dice]0[/dice]

Leonek lunged again at the creature, just as the bolt of lightning crackled past him. He nearly lost his footing, but somehow managed to plunge his blade into the creature's weak spot.

OOC,I don't know how you handle impales, so I just rolled regular damage.

Damage,[dice]1[/dice]

The creature roared in pain as the knife pierced its heart, but it remained on its feet.

OOC,On an impale you'd have rolled 4d4 for damage, but a roll of 1-5 is a crtiical hit. In this case the damage is normal, but it ignores armor. Also, your knife does not get stuck in the creature. [b]Chad[/b] and [b]Tobias[/b], you may act now.

Tobias cusses under his breath at the contrariness of the device, he squeezes it again and electricity arcs over his companions' heads.But misses the monster's head.

Chad watches the beast writhing after the blow from Leonek and takes another swipe with his knife, it however failsto find it's mark.

The monster fled up the stairs. It was in agony, but it did not have far to go to reach the top. It pushed aside a stone slab in the ceiling, and sunlight spilled into the stairway from above.

OOC,Each of you may get one more attack now if you wish, but it is no longer at point blank range and it gets a chance to Dodge any successful hits (but roll damage anyway).

Leonek charges ahead and throws his knife at the beast, narrowly missing it.

For some reason, the device doesn't fire. "Recharging maybe." Tobias mutters as he follows after Leonek. He looks forward to the sunlight.

Watching the beast retreat and the sunlight spill in signaling they had reached the surface, Chad smiled; as such he puts his knife away, and readies his pistol and heads to the sunlight. "Spot on good knife play Leonek, now let's get up there!"

The creature hauled itself up through the hole in the cavern roof and disappeared from view. Chad was close behind it, and he emerged into a ruined abbey perched on a high cliff top. To the west, in the direction of the sun, a road was visible some distance away. To the east was the edge of the cliff, and it was for this that the fishman was running.

OOC,[b]Chad[/b], please roll Spot Hidden. [b]Leonek[/b] and [b]Tobias[/b], please roll as well if you also emerge. Each of you may make one more attack prior to the creature's turn, with the same conditions as before.

Leonek nods sternly.

"Not good enough..."


He emerges from the hole as well and looks around quickly, before chasing after the creature and throwing his knife. Cursing softly as he misses his target.

As Chad emerges, he looks around and is far to focused on his foe to notice anything. Given the open air, Chad decides to risk the report of his pistol, but the shot misses.

Tobias still could not get the bizarre weapon to fire again, nor did he notice anything else. Three other gunshots rang out in the distance, but nobody could see where.

The creature reached the edge of the cliff before anyone could fire again and leapt off in a graceful dive. Its running start ensured that it could clear enough distance to get to water that wasn't too shallow, and a splash came from below.

"Damn it! It got away!"


He looks around, trying to determine where those shots came from.


"We should hurry down to the others before that creature raises the alarm."

Tobias grimaces at the gadget. "So much for future technology." He puts it away and circles around as he hears something, "What's that? And where's the mansion? I thought the tunnels led to it but all I can see are those old ruins."

"Uh oh, sounds like they're having problems down by the shack on the beach - that was a gun firing. And there's someone approaching from the road." Tobias readies his rather useless gadget and points it towards the approaching person. He hears the uneven footsteps, "Who do we know with a limp?" He asks the others.

"No one..."

Leonek turns in the direction Tobias indicates and draws his spare knife.

None of them could see the approaching figure with the ruins in the way, but at least whoever was coming was unlikely to be able to see them. Another gunshot came from the same direction as the others.

Chad Engraham,[b]Chad[/b] was also able to confirm that the gunshots came from below and some distance to the north, and he too heard one set of footsteps approaching from the direction of the road.

Chad listens and responds in a low voice. "Let's deal with our visitor first and quickly. I'll get a look at whomever, you two take up positions to cover me." Chad following his ears and using the ruins for cover and concealment moves to get a clandestine glimpse of their new threat.

Leonek crawls up to some covers to the right of Chad, trying to remain hidden.

Chad, Leonek, and Tobias carefully made their way to the edge of the ruins. Peeking out around the fragments of the building, they could see about forty yards of open ground separating them from the road. A wall divided the grounds from the road, beyond which they could see a blue sedan by the roadside. There was a gate in the wall with a wooden barricade blocking vehicle access to the ruins, though it was possible for people on foot to do so. This was in fact what the very tall man who was approaching the ruins had done. He was walking up the path and heading in their general direction, and he was currently about twenty yards away. He wore a long trenchcoat that concealed his form, and he appeared to walk with a limp, though his legs were not visible. A hat partially concealed his face, but enough was visible for them to notice the telltale signs that showed on so many other residents of Dunwich. In one of his gloved hands, he gripped a revolver. He didn't appear to have notced them.

OOC,[b]Leonek[/b], please roll Sanity. Sanity loss is 0/1, as I think you've already lost 3 for seeing these guys, and the maximum loss is 4. I believe [b]Chad[/b] and [b]Tobias[/b] have already lost 4, so they are used to them at this point and do not need to roll. You may all act freely now. If you want to shoot at the man right now, it is long range for the handgun (skill is halved), but normal range for the electric gun.

Chad pistol still ready gestures to the others to remain quiet while the strange man drew closer. Oh would he love to capture that car right about now. But their best odds of resolving the encounter favorably would be if the man was a bit closer.

Tobias readies the electric gun and prepares to shoot on the soldier's command. He isn't that confident with it.

Leonek feels his blood boil as he sees the half-man, gripping the hilt of his knife tighter.

The man continued to advance, towards the ruins but not directly towards their position. He cleared half of the distance, still showing no sign of having noticed them. More distant gunfire came from below.

Chad now takes steady aim with his pistol and in an authoritative voice commands the stranger. "Drop your weapon!" And to Leonek and Tobias "If he moves kill him"

Leonek crouches, his body coiled up, ready to dash forward should the man make any untoward reactions.

The man looked around, then started to sprint for the cover of the ruins.

OOC,[b]Chad[/b], you may fire two shots before he reaches the ruins if you wish. [b]Tobias[/b], you may attempt to fire once. You are both at normal range. [b]Leonek[/b], you may also act.

Leonek launches like an arrow towards the man, trying to describe a trajectory that wouldn't put him into his companions' line of fire.

Leonek sprints until he's alongside the man and then suddenly stops launching his elbow into the man's face.

Chad fires at the strange man but his shot is wide and fails to find its mark.

Tobias is impressed with Leonek's nerve and skill at hand to hand combat. As soon as he has an opening he fires the electric gun; at least, he pulls the trigger but nothing happens. He ducks back under cover and waits, giving the gun a shake and a hard stare, before having another go.

Chad's second shot struck home, wounding him badly in the stomach. The man dropped his revolver and fell backwards, ending up motionless on the ground just before Leonek reached him.

OOC,I went ahead and rolled for [b]Chad[/b]'s second shot, since his player hasn't posted in several days. The guy went down for the count before [b]Leonek[/b] had a chance to attack him, and we're now out of combat.

Leonek quickly picks up the man's revolver and checks if it's actually loaded or not.

"We should go and help the others, those shots probably mean they're in trouble."

Tobias comes out of cover and walks over to the body which he pushes with his foot. "He's probably still alive." He hunkers down and looks at the wound, "There's no way I can repair that. He's a gonna unless one of you two can fix him up. I know he looks like a creepy fish man but it'll still count as murder if the cops catch up with us."

"I say we put him down right here."

Leonek draws his knife to emphasize his point.

Chad looks at Leonek. "We aren't here to start a war Leonek, nor eradicate this species. We're here to save Dr Kirby and find out what we can, which right now includes the implied task of saving our skins." Then to the fish man "Well I wish I had been a bit more convincing. Just dropping the gun would have been much better for everyone" back to Leonek and Tobias "Keep him restrained" Chad attempts to help the man.

Chad managed to bind the fishman's wound by tying his belt tight around his stomach. He looked like he was starting to do a little better, but not much. However, he was stable now and starting to come to his senses. His already bulging eyes went wider with fear when he saw his assailants armed and looming over him. "W-what do you want?" he burbled.

The gunfire continued from the beach below. Interspersed with the pistol shots were a pair of shotgun blasts, quite close together.

Leonek sheathes the knife and scowls.

"We should take his car and see to just that then, sir. Something is going on at the beach and it doesn't sound good."

"Let's hurry then. That shotgun didn't sound good - and none of us had one of those. Can we take him with us? Better to keep an eye on him." Tobias goes towards the car, hoping to find the keys in the ignition. If not, he'll look through the fishman's pockets.

Chad looks at the Fishman, and calmly explains, "Despite the hostility we've encountered, we've been attacked by your people several times since we've arrived in Dunwich, I don't bear you malice. Right now, all I want to do is leave. Now if you'll hand over the keys to your car, I'll leave you here, where you are very likely to be found and cared for by your own kind. We will be of course relieving your of your firearm as well. So what do you say, can we do this the easy way?"

The man grumbled. "I don't see as I have much choice," he muttered. "I left the keys in the car." He staggered to his feet and began to make his way gingerly towards the ruins.

The revolver that Leonek had taken was a .38 snub-nose, and it was fully loaded with six bullets.

Tobias led the way across the open ground towards the car. He could tell he was heading west, as it was late afternoon and the sun was low in the sky ahead of him. The road stretched off to the southwest and northeast, and the car, still some way ahead, was parked on the side of the road closer to the ruins, facing southwest.

Leonek held on to the pistol and made his way to the car.


Shall I drive?

Chad, Leonek, and Tobias crossed the field towards the road. The sounds of gunfire from the beach had stopped by this point. When the three of them were about ten yards away from the gateway to the road, a keening, whistling sound came from the direction of the ruins. They also heard the man cackling from that direction, though he had already vanished behind the cover of the ruins. "That's Rover coming!" he called. "You're all for it now!"

Chad hears the commotion. "Well way to make a man retreat an act of mercy. Quick to the car. Tobias, as far as I can tell you've only managed to fire your widget once; you drive. Leonek and I will shoot, now RUN!"

Leonek let out a curse and starts running towards the car, gripping the gun tightly.

Tobias nabs the keys and breaks into a run. "I'll get it started, just be ready to jump in soon as." He runs towards the car aiming to jump into the driver's seat.

Chad, Leonek, and Tobias sprinted through the gateway and to the car. The keys were in the ignition, and the motor was already running. As they fled, the sound behind them grew louder and rose to a crescendo of mad piping. They could not help glancing back, and they saw an enormous, roughly spherical white mass rising above the ruins, seeming to inflate before their eyes. The impossible thing was covered with eyes and mouths - far too many of them. And then it begin to roll forward, heading in their direction...
