Alternative Beginning Character Concepts.

Post by Priest »

Okay, think about a character to be living and working in the city of Raleigh, NC, at the start of the outbreak. He or she can be anything you wish, from on leave military, through law enforcement, Medical personnel, journalist to humble shoe salesman.
Your choice, they all taste the same to the zombies
One thing though make sure you give your character some sort of combat ability, either martial arts or gun skills. The prepared survive the unprepared tend to end up as a zombie snack. You know the drill.
Also don't forget that having dependants can bring you benefits as well as being a hindrance. (More of that in the specifics section)
Once we have a list of concepts we can start fleshing them out (forgive the choice of words).
We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.

Concept questions;

Who are you?
Self explanatory really, Cop, Military Service Personnel, Buisness owner, family man/woman, student, retired worker etc.

What Motivates you?
Although survival in a world consumed by the Living Dead is the overall theme of the War of the Dead campaign, it’s far from the only thing that should motivate your character. Each character in the campaign should have a personal, underlying motivation that keeps them going.
Self survival, dependants survival, truth, societies survival etc.
We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are.

I'd like to play someone attached to the Wake County Sheriff's Office, a deputy for example.

He's on leave because his pregnant wife has been taken into hospital care due to some prenatal complications that need monitoring.
Finding and securing his family would be his primary motivation.

Sounds like a goer to me. Very Walking Deadish, next you'll be naming him Rick ;)

Background

Deputy Robert Valentine is a member of the Wake County Patrol Unit. After graduating from the Police Academy, he joined the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Six years ago he decided to take on a more regular job to concentrate on establishing a family and he joined the Sheriff's Department.
The following year Valentine married his high school sweetheart, Andrea Jovovich, and the pair moved into a house in the suburbs of Raleigh.
Valentine served the Sheriff's Department with distinction the following years and greatly enjoyed his life with Andrea.
An active member of the local community, he is known as a generous and friendly person, never shying away from supporting bake sales or joining three-legged races.
A few months ago, the Rob and Andrea found out they were pregnant, but halfway through her pregnancy complications arose and Andrea was forced to stay in the hospital or observation. Robert decided to take a leave of absence to look after his wife, dividing his time between working on their house and taking care of Andrea. And the epidemic broke out...

Sorry DrP just saw what you were confused by.
The Guts under your Attributes is simply the same as the Guts in your skill list for you it's a d8.
Hadn't noticed I put it there twice

DrP
I think you have spent to many skill points, you have 15 points to spread amongst the skills each point spent raises the die type untill the linked attribute is met, thereafter each raise of the die costs 2 points.
I have calculated that you have spent over 20 something points.

Example: Fighting [agility] d8 to get this skill at this level requires a spend of 3 points 1 point for d4 +1 for d6 +1 for d8 = 3 points
If you had raised it to d10 (one die above your linked Attribute of Agility d8 it would have cost you an extra 2 points)

Aha, I see what I did wrong, I thought the d4 was free.
I'll have a look at it right away.

Looks like I overspent 10 points :D
I've taken 'em out and adjust my secondary abilities accordingly. It should be okay now.

Yeah that confused me for a while the first time I put a character together.

I still make you 2 points over.

I'll probably get my character made tommarow, I'm thinking another thief character but with a radically different personality.

I'm still pondering about 2 concepts, but haven't decided which one to work out yet.
One is a grumpy fifthysomething who lost his faith in society after his wife and children got brutally murdered, leaving him broken and expropriated. Being the survivor he is, he roams the streets, scavenging for food and looking to find the culprits of his demise to bring them to justice. He looks a bit like Rutger Hauer with a beard in scruffy clothes.
The other concept is a hillbilly car mechanic with a porn moustache and mandatory mullet, driving an oversized and highly customised pickup truck. I haven't completely figured out his motivations and background yet. To do so, I need to know one other thing: do we play before or after the outbreak?

Ok, I seem to have overlooked a rather important topic :p
I'll go with the redneck. He came all the way from Alabama to Raleigh in pursuit of his beloved Mary Sue, who left him for a Raleigh businessman.
Can I have a red Toyota Hilux with the confederate flag spray painted on it, 500W speakers on the roof, connected my radio and microphone, oversized headlights and a bull bar? And a shotgun under my seat belt? :D

In answer to your question we play at the beginning of the outbreak.

Hey if I make a young character do I have to take the young hinderance, and if so what's the age cut off?

According to the core rule book
Young (Major)
...Think carefully before choosing this hindrance. For your youngster starts at a significant disadvantage.
Young Heroes are generally 8 - 12 years old...

So the cut off age will be 12. Above that youth is no hindrance.
