Arrival

There has been no word from a Nazi-run covalescent home in the Nazi-controlled south of France that is owned and operated by a subsidiary company controlled by long-serving members of the Nazi party as part of their aims to expand onto the conquered lands. There's probably nothing to worry about. There are a few people scheduled to arrive today anyway. They'll soon get to the bottom of it.

Erich brings up the rear, his hand never far from the pistol in his pocket.

There are five doors to the left, all offices after a brief examination, with a single door to the right and a final door at the end of the hall.
Is it bad that I listen to this about ten times a day?

"Let's go through these one at a time, nearest first," suggests Erich. "We should start with the offices, then the door on the right, and finally the one at the end."

Listen check,This corridor sounds deathly quiet which is what makes the footfalls at the end of the corridor on the other side of the end door sound so loud.
Jean opens the door to reveal another office. This one looks undisturbed. A large portrait of Adolf Hitler hangs on the wall behind the chair so it was likely either the office of a very loyal Nazi or someone of rank.

"Now this looks promising," says Erich, peering into the room. "Someone important had this office. Let's check the desk and filing cabinets for documents."

"Psst! Someone's coming!" Herman bundles the other two quickly into the room, follows them and quietly closes the door so it is only just ajar. He peers through, looking down the corridor. "I heard footsteps past that last door." He whispers.

Close the door, quickly. maybe it is the man who told you to wait. let's hide or try to surprise him if he comes into the room.
Jean says, panicked. He holds the rake tightly and begins to sweat.

The door at the other end of the corridor opens and footsteps come down the corridor.

Erich stands with his back to the wall beside the door, so that the door itself will block him from view if it opens. He puts his right hand into his pocket and grips his pistol. The person who told us to wait wouldn't come alone, he thinks. He'd have sent a bunch of guys after us.

The footsteps pass down the corridor ... then pauses in front of their door.

Someone puts their hand on the knob, wiggles it, then releases it.

Herman frowns, "Why pick on this particular door, and why wiggle the door handle but not enter - it's not like the door's locked." He thinks to himself.

The footsteps continue on down the hall, then return, shuffling through the furniture and leaving the way they came.

A heavy silence follows.

Somewhere a grandfather clock chimes.
