Arrival

The covered flatbed truck trundles along the unpaved road, seeking and finding every rut on the way or so it seems. The sky is darkening around them. An unexploded bomb in the middle of one road had caused them to divert quite a distance and a military convoy had further slowed them down and thus ensured their arrival would be nearly two hours late. The canvas covering flaps around the two sitting on the benches in the back, causing quite a noise and letting in the chill air which seeps through their clothing and gets into their bones. They can see only the trees and shrubbery that line the dirt road behind them and have no idea how close or far away they may be.

Herman Kluge, who sits in the passenger seat, finds himself uncomfortable as the quite hard chair is bolted down with no springs within it and thus every bump and grind is transmitted directly through his body. He, at least, can see the majestic sweep of the massive building that stands behind the cast iron fence with its broad gate. There's a boom that currently lays before the gate, besides which stands a comfortable sentry box with glass windows and no sentry inside.

With a grinding of gears, the truck slows to a stop and the driver turns to Herman. "There you are," he says in passable German.

Erich Landau, seated in the back of the truck, rises and gathers his things: an old, battered suitcase and a black metal toolbox. While they may have tools at the hospital, he prefers to use his own. He knows that his tools are of high quality, and he is used to using them. Still standing in the back of the truck, he uses his higher vantage point to survey his surroundings. He always likes to stay alert; it's one reason he isn't dead yet. You never knew when the Resistance might spring an ambush, and the absence of a sentry is troubling.

Herman nods shortly to the driver. He grabs his kit bag and rifle and swings out of the truck. He looks at the empty sentry box, "Security? What security? Useless idiots." He mutters under his breath. He looks around for a guard and walks over to lift the boom.

"No need to lift that up," says the driver. "Here's where I stop. Funny about the sentry being absent but I s'pose that's what they need more like you for." He reaches out through the open window and thumps on his door. "C'mon then, out you get. Not far to the manor doors now."

There's no sign of any sentries anywhere about. The gate and fence are bristling with curls of barbed wire and the sentry box beside the gate seems to a relatively well-used office judging by the coffee cup, calendar and postboard full of reminders, exhortations and other details.

"Thank you for the lift," says Erich to the driver. He climbs down from the truck and approaches the gate, carrying his suitcase and toolbox.

Herman drops his kit bag and steps into the sentry box. He sniffs the coffee cup, looks at the entries on the calendar and noses through the notes on the post board. He's very confused that there's no sentry and wants to get the low down on what's been happening before he takes up his new post.

The coffee cup is cold though there's no mould on the sludge at the bottom at the very least. Considering the cool air, that means they could have left this sentry box anywhere from an hour ago to a day ago. There's no sign of spent shells or anything else like that. The calendar entries are pretty plain and likely contain coded references to deliveries and other planned entries and exists. There's one listed for 2 hours ago that probably indicates them: 1 x Rifle, 2 x Shovels. The notes all discuss various basic security procedures, protocol changes and public information on Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler. Nothing too secret. The sort of thing one would expect on any such semi-civilian noticeboard.

Erich follows Herman to the sentry box and looks inside. "You'd think they'd have better security in this place," he says. "Anyone could just walk right in. They need you more than they know."

Herman, embarrassed to be caught nosing about by a superior office, drops the coffee cup he has been sniffing and stands to attention. He flashes a salute, "Yes Sir!"

Herman casts an eye at the man who follows him into the box, "You're not wrong. Looks like I'll have my work cut out." He puts down the cup he's been sniffing and turns to go back out. "What're you here for?" Looking at the man's clothing for clues.

Erich is dressed in fairly standard work clothes, carrying an old battered suitcase and a toolbox in much better condition. "I'm the new janitor," he says, setting his suitcase down briefly and extending his right hand for a shake. "Erich Landau is the name. I'm past fighting age, so at least this way I can free up a younger man."

Herman smiles and shakes the proffered hand. "Wotcha, Herman Kluge. Guess we'd better see what this place has in store for us. You know who the boss is? I 'aint got a clue." He steps back outside to the gate, trying to smarten his uniform. He takes off his hat, spits in his hand and uses it to flatten his hair. Then, picking up his kit bag and rifle, he grins at Erich, "let's go!"

The truck rumbles off without them without a backward glance. The gate itself is firmly locked, chained, and padlocked for extra security. There's a personnel gate to one side that's unlocked and somewhat ajar at least. The grounds are relatively immense with two military-style trucks parked outside the double doors to the colonaded entrance that can be seen at a distance. There's no lights on view but there wouldn't be. Black out regulations are generally a wise idea, especially with such a semi-clandestine facility. A gardener can be seen finishing up his work on one of the more western beds, further on from where the gravel drive wraps around a fountain in the center of the yard. The scrape, scrape of his hoe is one of the few sounds. Everything seems a little quiet. A little off.

OOC: I'm assuming you two are standing just by the personnel gate. Let me know where you go. Please always try to be very direct with your movements and I'll aim for precision as well. Always feel free to ask questions about the surrounds and people you see.

"'s as good an idea as any. This place is dead." Herman shrugs and leads the way through the small gate, walking across the grounds to the gardener. He looks around and up at the looming building; and noses in the fountain as he strolls past. "Looks like you'll have your work cut out keeping this place clean." He says to Erich.

The gardener sees two men approaching. One is a young soldier but from his casual walk it doesn't look like he's ever been on a parade ground, his scruffy uniform carries a two chevrons and a pip making him a stabsgefreiter. The soldier comes to a stop and grins at him. "Hello, I'm Herman Kluge; your new security forces." He tries to puff up his chest, coughs and gives up. He shrugs and smiles, "Guess that's why I'm out here. Pleased to meet you."
stabsgefreiter,A Stabsgefreiter is a corporal on administrative duty and an 'end-of-the-line paygrade for noncombat specialists (or real sad sacks), who were ineligible for NCO academy and further promotion.' I've since found out that the rank was suspended between 1934 and 1942 and it's unlikely that Herman would be one but it suits him so well so I'll stick with it.

Hello
Jean says with a french accent
My name is Jean Michel Lorain, I'm the gardener of the place. The sentries are probably inside if you have not seen them at the gate. Come, let me escort you to the entrance as I wish to prepare some hot tea for my old bones. Where did you come from ?

"Where haven't I come from - bin bounced from one post to the next the whole war." Herman scratches his armpit as he follows the old gardener. "You bin here a long time? I guess you get to grow some prize vegetables hidden away in this vast garden." He says innocently.

The double doors to the main entrance are locked. They don't budge under Jean's insistent tugging. They never lock the front doors.... And there's nearly always a sentry standing here.

Yes there is and if no answer will come from the back we can try the scaffolding, there is a ladder over there.
Jean says, clearly puzzled by the situation

Re: Arrival

The trio walk around the rather silent building and see that it is even larger than it appears from the front. It actually stretches quite a way in depth as well. Along the front left wing (which is set back a bit from the front foyer entrance they had initially approached), they can see the scaffolding he spoke about. It seems there is a broken window on the second storey which is reachable via the scaffolding ladders. There's still a black out blind fixed into position, however. They make their way along the western wall, past further flower beds in hedge row wrapped sections, and pass the side door which was normally used by the security units (and which is marked security on its steel side). There's a number of cigarette butts that litter the floor out here where the door sentry must have spent many a lonely hour. (Spot Hidden checks) The door is most assuredly locked. There's an alarm right next to it.

There's likely a rear door as well but that would be further along the building.

Erich glances up at the broken window as they pass. "I see I'm going to have my work cut out for me here," he says. When they reach the security door, he takes a good look around, curious as to where the sentries have gone.

Something catches his eye behind a bush, and he goes over and triumphantly pulls out a partly filled bottle of scotch. "Now why would someone leave his post and leave perfectly good scotch behind? The alarm isn't ringing, so whatever it was couldn't have been an emergency, or the guards would have sounded it first."

Re: Arrival

I have no idea. I'm not allowed to be inside the building nor I have interest to get in as my work lies outside and I have my private place and my food is brought by a single friend maid to my front door.
Jean says
I do see the guards around here but do not interact with them but nodding occasionally.

Erich shrugs, then returns the bottle to its hiding place. "Well, the fellow who left it here will probably be back for it," he says. "Shall we continue to the back?"

Re: Arrival

I suggest we try the back door and if we get no response then we'll try the ladder. I fear something is wrong, this is extremely odd that the guards left their posts at the gate, the doors and no answer is coming from inside.
Jean says. He is worried about the the french nurses and maids inside and is quite puzzled by the lack of sound from within the building and the presence of everybody.

Herman dolefully watches Herman replace the bottle. He rubs his nose and walks forward; he tries the security door anyway, "You never know." and picks up one of the cigarette butts to see if it is still warm. He looks around but doesn't notice anything and then shrugs about the back door; "I'm happy to run up the ladder, check it's hunky-dory before you oldsters climb up it." He grins.

Re: Arrival

by Laraqua
The rear gardens are magnificent, if mostly given over to crops and wild flowers, and it's obvious that the gardener must be skillful indeed to keep even some of this under control. There's also a ramshackle old carriage house beside a more modern and recently put together garage which has a padlocked chain on its front sliding door. The rear set of double doors to this building are set back into the portico and are most assuredly locked.

It's starting to get dark now but a dark fluid can still be readily seen seeping out from beneath the rear double doors.

"None of this looks good," says Erich. "The rear doors are barred as well as locked. Maybe the Resistance could have carried out a raid, but there'd have been some evidence of a battle."

by royya
No, no raid. My shed is over there and I've worked on the far side of the gardens from early morning. Didn't see anything unusual until you two came.
Jean says
I'm clueless as you two. Something happened inside and I wonder what was it that made the residents to bar themselves inside. We can try to climb the ladder and enter from the second floor. But if your concerns are right and something did happen to residents I suggest we pass through my shed and equip. I have some tools.

Jean wants to take some tools (hammer, screw driver, even a shovel or a rake as a weapon.

"Good thinking," says Erich. "I've got my own tools, but there may be something better in there." The possibility that the gardener could have been in on a Resistance raid crosses his mind, but then why would he have stuck around? The man seems decent enough, but he doesn't know him well enough to break cover in front of him. I'll have to find a chance to get my pistol out of the hidden compartment and pocket it when he's not looking, he thinks.

The shed seems only a little bigger than most garden sheds. The corrugated iron must get quite hot in the summer times though these forests might keep it cooler than in, say, Paris.

Herman comes back out of the carriage house and kicks the barred door of the garage. "If they barred themselves in here then they must still be in there, else how could they keep the door locked from the outside? So they're keeping very quiet or they're dead." He walks away and looks up at the garage roof for a skylight or to see how thin the roof is. " Have you got torches in the shed, Jean?" It's gonna get pretty dark soon."

Re: Arrival

There's no way to see a skylight from this angle though it is certainly possible. He'd have to clamber up to be sure. The corrugated iron gate here, though, is padlocked on a chain from the outside. It's the house doors which are barred from the inside. There'd be bound to be flashlights and other things in the garage, or perhaps in the gatehouse.

Let's take the rake, shovel, garden scissors, hammer and screwdriver. The scissors is the closes thing that might cut something but I hardly belive it will cut a strong chain.

Nothing seems to have changed in their absence, which is unfortunate. It would have been nice if they had come around the front to see some sentries on the front porch or something similar rather than having to scuttle up the ladder to the second floor.

When the others are done in the shed, Erich ducks inside and puts down his suitcase and toolbox, making sure his body is blocking the view of the suitcase from the door. He takes the hammer and screwdriver out of his toolbox and attaches them, together with the scissors, to his workman's belt. Then he removes his pistol, extra magazines, and genuine identification papers from the hidden compartment in the suitcase and conceals them in his pockets. Once he is finished, he follows the others to the ladder.

There was a single very large flashlight that would be awkward to hold alongside a weapon. On the other hand, it could be used as a weapon but with a greater chance of breaking the light itself.

OOC,Herman has his small axe and crowbar. Unfortunately as part of Erich's cover his smaller flashlight also has weaker batteries to make him seem more of a random gardener than anyone particularly well-equipped. Batteries are hard to get these days, after all. It seemed a small matter at the time. Oh well, the light will be enough to keep him from running into anything or to read anything close. It just won't be able to pick someone out of the growing darkness of the gardens around them.

Re: Arrival

Herman had looked at the old light with disgust. "Paraffin or oil? Well, I'll carry it a little way but don't expect me shoot bogies while I've got it; at least we won't trip over any old rakes lying around, hey Jean?" He carries it and follows Jean around the house. "If we light it, it'll alert anyone that we're here... a good thing or not, I don't know." He looks back at the shed where Erich is fiddling around and then saunters after Jean with a shrug.

The windows are all blacked out with wooden frames. They might be able to batter their way in but it certainly wouldn't be popular with the authorities.

Once up the ladder, they can walk along the wooden scaffolding to the open window which overlooks a large wood-panelled office with filing cabinets, bookcases and a desk with a typewriter perched on top of it.

"Typical. Must be at least, what four - five floors down? Well, better get started then." Herman looks around for any small useful or valuable objects he can swipe for contraband, flashing the large lamp around and pulling open the odd drawer or two.

There is a small hip flask full of whiskey - hardly contraband, but good quality stuff. The drawers themselves seem to hold financial information. This must have been the office of the local accountant. It's quite a nice office though that might just be the nature of the requisitioned larger rooms. With a bit of time and some accountancy skill, they could probably shake out a bit of information from these files. One note, in particular, however, seems to be of interest: "Recent stocks increased. Crates #17, #18, and #19 requisitioned from Church. Apply to long-range financial considerations."

Herman pockets the whiskey. "Nah, not much. Lots of numbers n stuff. Something about some crates being requisitioned from the church - might be worth a look - just to check the crates are secure of course; me being in charge of security n all. And I found me some spirits; could come in handy." He winks. "Lets see what else is through the door."

Jean says nothing. He tries to check for any evidance for recent activity like a burnt ciggar, hot coals in a fireplace or an hot tea on the desk. If none is present, he will go through the waste basket to see what was the last thing to be thrown and the date on it if it is a paper form.

There is a cup of tea on the desk though it's empty. There are cooling coals in the fireplace though no sign of an ashtray. The coals could have been let to run down because the person in this office was planning to be out (or go to bed - it is reaching nighttime) or because something happened here a few hours ago which meant that no one thought to bank them.

Re: Arrival

The stairs leading down to the first floor seems to have been barred from the other side. There are a series of weights upon the other side (Combined Strength versus 40 to budge it) that could well be furniture or even wooden boards nailed from the other side. The corridor continues on around in a square shape, or something similar to it, judging by what they have seen thus far.

Wait ... something is wrong here. Why would someone bar the doors from the other side if all they want is to exit. it feels like all the clues are to prevent outsiders to enter. I say we search for more clues on this floor before we head down, maybe we'll find something that will help us understand what happened in there or another route that is not closed.

The door is unlocked but as he pushes it open, they can hear a scuffle inside and the clanging of metal. Slamming the door open entirely (as I imagine he'd make haste now), their flashlights probe a dark and blacked out room. One light passes across a falling ventilation grille and there's a glimpse of a booted foot disappearing up into the vent space. They can hear someone moving through the vents now above them, ka-thunk, ka-thunk.

There's a scraping, crunching, metallic yet wet sound, a bang and a hubbub up there, before the vent collapses inwards on Herman, dropping a screaming man on top of him. There's warmth and red everywhere, the crisp iron tang of blood, and the man pulls back from Herman and in that brief moment Herman sees the man's nose, cheeks and lips have been ripped clean off. The man flails on top of him, painfully bruising him (though no hit point loss) as he tries to flee.

(OOC: When the vent collapses, would Herman have fired?)

OOC,That's fine. It won't go off unless you have your gun on the trigger.
Warm and wet and crisp iron tang splashes against Herman's face, drenching shirt and skin. The man on top of him pulls back, reeling backward, revealing a face with lips, cheeks, nose gone, wet pink bone glistening beneath. More blood pours through from slit across the neck, revealed as his head lolls back, the tear opening like a thick wet mouth spewing blood on him and foaming with each in-drawn breath. The man collapses in Herman's arms, shaking, boots drumming the floorboards.

1 / 1d2 SAN loss.

Although shocked Herman has seen worse (1) and is not put off by the gory mess. "Dammit! He's not going to make it!" He tries desperately to keep the man still and breathing but he hasn't any medial training to know what to do. " We need a doctor. Come on mate, stay with us!" He cradles the mess in his lap and looks at his companions helplessly.

The man is quite clearly gone. It's just taking awhile for him to realise it. His boot heels snap against the floorboards, rat-tat-tat. The grille shuts easily enough, the tools quickly getting it back into place. Blood pours out across Herman's hands as the suited man dies, slowly, in his lap.

Herman shakes his head and allows the others to drag the corpse away. He gets up and looks up at the grill, listening, but doesn't hear much. He feels his hands getting sticky and follows the others into the room. "Poor sod; what a way to go. I can't understand how it happened. He seemed all right in here and then something happened in the vent. Do you think he got caught in a fan? Look, I've got to get a wash before I touch anything else; I'll just see if one of these rooms is a bathroom or has a basin. Can you tell from the man's clothes who he was? Wouldn't a patient be dressed as one?" If there's no basin in the room, Herman steps out of the corridor to look for a bathroom.

Judging by his Nazi Party card, they're looking at the corpse of Dr. Schiller, a medical doctor. Taking a look at his degree on the wall shows that he got his degree from the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The air seems tense, charged with some negative energy as though the subconscious recesses of their mind were conjuring up every demon and monster in human memory and planting them in every corner and every shadow. This was wrong. The powerful Nazi forces might be attacked by French rebels. They might even, possibly, lose a building or two (though surely not one so well-fortified). But this? A mad doctor with his throat torn out who had fallen through a vent? This isn't what anyone expected to find.

The fourth room is quiet and undisturbed but for a set of building schematics soaked in coffee from a spilled mug. A quick glance reveals them to be of an older make and model. Perhaps an earlier version of this site before all of the renovations? (You may roll any relevant check you'd like to examine the schematics). Most of the surrounding files involve architectural notes that are written in rather intensive jargon that is hard to read.

There are keys in the top drawer of the desk which do, indeed, fit the filing cabinet. The files seem to contain mostly patient files. There are sixty two such files, in total in the top two drawers. The bottom drawer, labelled DECEASED, holds ninety well-packed in files.

Herman looks over the drawings, "Dad was a builder." He reminisces. "These look old, they could be this building." He has a look to see if the general layout matches what he's seen of the hospital so far. As for the coffee cup, "It almost seems like everyone disappeared soon after they'd all had coffee, did they have elevenses here? In which case we could put a time on whatever it was that happened." He says to Jean and then says, "I can't believe you didn't notice anything odd happening."

Jean suggests as he inspect the schematics, maybe to find similarities in the outline

Re: Arrival

by Laraqua
The schematics are all of the same building and likely represent this one, before renovations. A quick look at the schematics from a historical perspective suggests that this was an old fortified manor before it had been taken up by the Nazis. In fact, it looks like it would have initially been a simple fort judging by the circular tower still in evidence in one corner and the broader midsection looks like a lord's great hall.

The DECEASED files provide little in the way of actual medical information, simply showing when they died. Most of the information seems to have been gathered over the person's lifespan with checklists on their viable health from their time as a baby with later checklists every three years, including a rating score card, lineage records proving that they are "purebloods" of various races (including Aryan). It seems that all of the victims are 21 years old.

Erich catches up with the others and fills them in on what he found in the files. "I'm sure it's no coincidence that they all died at 21," says Erich. "Aktion T4 is a Nazi euthanasia program, where those with incurable medical conditions are transferred to special hospitals to be put to death. It was intended to be secret, but people found out, and there has been tremendous public outcry against it, especially in the churches."
OOC,What is the exact date? I know it's August 1941, since it's six months after Home Front Mythos, which took place in February 1941. Aktion T4 was officially canceled on August 24, 1941, the only time Hitler ever bowed to public pressure (though he brought it back later in a different guise).

The office is silent now where before there had been a metallic thwacking. The likely culprit is the phone receiver that hangs over the side of the metal desk. The cause of it's movement the mess of papers on the desk and the gaping hole of a vent set in the roof about three meters diagonally from the table top.

"That doesn't look good," says Erich, pointing out the ruined grille and watching the hole nervously. There's silence on the other end although that could just mean that the phone had been patched through to the local switchboard operator before it was dropped. Of course, that would also mean that the operator isn't there anymore. It's hard to be sure unless they reached the switchboard.

"Ja," bluffs Erich, glad that he had deliberately phrased his initial statement the way he had so that he could milk as much information as he could before the person on the other end sees through his charade. "Who is speaking? Give me a status report."

The person on the other end barely stifles a giggle. "Switchboard here. Several sections have gone down to variant control. I wouldn't go down into the drains if I were you. It seems that's where they throw their off-cuts. Whereabouts are you, sir? I think you'll need some support."

Erich takes out a handkerchief, wipes his fingerprints off of the phone, and leaves the receiver dangling where he found it. "We'd better move on quickly," he says, having clearly seen through the person on the other end of the line. "and not just because there's a gaping hole overhead through which we could be attacked just like whoever was in this room before us. That was the switchboard on the other end. The operator said that several sections have gone down to variant control, whatever that means, and not to go down into the drains because that's where they throw their off-cuts. I was told that 'support' was coming and to wait here, but for all I know whoever comes may just have orders to kill everyone they find."

Herman looks up at the grill. "So the switchboard knows a bit about what's happened here then; maybe the building's been invaded by these variants and they're hiding out in the drains. Drains and also the air ducts by the looks of things. Do you think it was a variant that attacked that poor sod outside? Pulled him up while he was on the phone and chewed his throat out?" Herman moves nervously away from the vent. "I agree, we can't trust the support and we need to watch out for the variant lot. Let's get out of here at least." He checks that his rifle is now loaded.

Erich nods and follows him out. "Let's lock the door after we leave," he says, "in case any of those variants decides to come through that hole. Then we finish with the upstairs rooms and find a way downstairs before we have company."

The first room has a radio softly playing static in the background. It seems a pretty ordinary room. On the plus side there's no blood or gore, which is a positive thing. The final room is also an office, but one that seems to have a large grandfather clock that had been partly pushed up against the door. After all whenever you try to push open the door a little bit there's a weight behind it, a tall poorly balanced and ticking weight. It could be easily pushed along without tipping it over if it were open slowly.

"If we push it slowly, we can open the door without tipping over the clock," says Erich. "It seems someone tried to take shelter in here and barricaded the door. I think we should look inside."

The ventilation duct is closed in this room. The screws tightly in place. The typewriter in front of the man, who appears to have been some sort of clerk judging by the paperwork, simply has the words: "The only way out" written on the piece of paper.

"Poor man," says Erich. "He must have been desperate if he thought the only way out was to kill himself. Must have been some time ago, as the blood is dried." He scans the paperwork to see if there is anything interesting on it that hasn't been obliterated by the blood.

The wastepaper bin contains a memo:

Environmental Contamination can be reduced through frequent hand washing after entering or leaving the Hazard Areas. Please ensure that everyone is suitably reminded of this process. The dissolution of solid state tissue into a seemingly fungal matter can lead to airborne spores which must be washed off before leaving any of the contamination zones. Ensure this is well know. The ticking clock seems to have lost both of its hands, leaving its second hand to aimlessly spin. It seems a strange thing to do to a clock. Someone must have opened it and cut the hands off.

(OOC: It doesn't look like a clock puzzle where you insert hands into a gap. It looks like the hands were snipped off)

Erich considers the mental state of whoever ruined the clock. "I think the man who did this must be the same one who killed himself. It's as though he wished he could stop time. Perhaps he knew what was going on here, when things were supposed to happen, and what went wrong, and he preferred to die than to live with the consequences."

Re: Arrival

"Wow!" Says Herman, although it is unclear whether he is more impressed with the man's desperateness or Erich's astute fathoming of the dead man's mind. "Well, let's just hope that whatever it was is all over and we're just here to mop up." He looks down at the dried blood on his hands. "You don't think this blood will be a problem do you? I mean with the fungus thingy?" He sniffs his fingers gingerly.

I'll just have to find a mop here, as I couldn't fit one in my toolbox," he quips. "I wouldn't bet on it, though. And the 'support' that's on its way may mop us up if we don't keep moving. Let's get the stairway open."

"But don't the air ducts flow all round the building? So whatever is hiding in them could bypass the stair barricade anyway." Herman sucks on his roll-up and blows out thin acrid smoke. He looks for any more doorways to try.

Re: Arrival

The next corridor is partially barricaded with tables and filing cabinets, allowing the easiest access to be through crawling between the legs of one table. The door nearest them stands partially open to reveal an empty room that is emptier than most since it seems that part of its furnishings were donated to the hallway for this rather unsturdy looking barricade. At least there is no corpse in that one. The other doors are on the other side of the corridor.

The door is already partially open and inside the room seems to have been largely stripped of its contents. There are a few thick drops of blood here and there but nothing that would indicate a violent scuffle, more of a passive dripping. The other doors all stand on the other side of the blockage.

The person doesn't seem to have been bleeding badly enough for that. It's just a few stray drops of blood. There might be a few more elsewhere, presuming it wasn't due to a nosebleed that could be readily staunched with a handkerchief. Jean hasn't spotted any additional stray droplets. Perhaps on the other side of the barricade?

As they step out into the hallway, they hear a heavy drizzle hit the window panes. There's still some light coming in through the windows, the final traces of dusk not yet overtaken by dark clouds or the horizon but the corridor itself is awfully dark and gloomy. There are five doors to the left, a few have already been examined to be offices, with a single door to the right and a final door at the end of the hall. There are more blood drops on the carpet, all looking rather fresh, but no bloody shoe prints or anything that vulgar. The man collapses to the ground, his leg wound bleeding terribly and arterial spray pumping freely. The sharp barks of his rifle echo throughout the building. If they were in any doubt as to whether anyone knew they were here, that is bound to have changed. In the creeping silence that seems to fill this very building, that shot must have thundered throughout the entire building. Surely. Right?
First Aid,anyone with even minimal first aid can tell that he's going to be a goner as the thigh's major artery is pumping out too much blood to save him. The only reason he's still "alive" is due to a mixture of dramatic license and because death is rarely instant in the real world so to embody a Gritty Realism aspect, I'm going down this direction. Therefore you can react to the dying man as you please, but he will die. He's lost hit points in an earlier circumstance that you can spot with a successful Spot Hidden roll.

"This man had already been wounded," says Erich, looking at the body. "He may have reacted out of fear. Whatever injured him can't be far away, either. We should search him and the room quickly, then keep moving. The gunshot won't have gone unnoticed."

Herman crouches down next to the dying man and tries to get his attention; the blood doesn't faze him as he's seen it many times before. He grips the man's hand. "I've got you, it's okay." He looks into the man's eyes and knows he hasn't got long. "Can you tell me what's here, in this building? What attacked you?" He doubts the man will speak but he's heard of stranger death-bed confessions.

The man murmurs something, so quiet it's almost impossible to understand.

(OOC: Listen checks. Herman is doubled as he can put his ear to the man's lips and those who choose to spend the round searching the room can make one at half chance).

Jean is outside. The man in the room is being dealt by Herman and Erich. Jean focus himself on the corridor and those who might come due the gunshot.

Whispered dying words, not this time took the light but not me can't sleep doctors waiting there made the hurt and ants in my blood can't sleep can't sleep....
Then the blood ceases to pump and the man expires with a final breath.

There's a yellow confidential folder on the table that certainly has its own information on hand, though a chunk of it has been ripped out and burned in the nearby wastepaper bin.

OOC,I thought this was August 1941, but papers said the consultation was in October. Also, are the notes supposed to end in the middle of the word like that, or is there more?

OOC: All is as it should be. And yes,it is meant to end partway through the word.

"Strange," says Erich. "This report is dated two months in the future, and it cuts off before it's finished. It looks like he tore it out and burned it."

Herman closes the man's eyes and stands up. "He didn't say much of any sense; either because of his wounds or he was possibly insane to start with. I reckon he was a patient and I think the doctors were doing experiments on them; he said 'the doctors were causing hurt.'" He leans over Erich's shoulder and reads the report. "That tallies. Although the dates are odd; it's only August. I dunno what all that medical stuff means but it sounds gross - growths? And animal protein, that's meat ain't it?"

"Yeah, it's meat," says Erich. "These doctors just like using long words to make themselves sound more important, I guess. Perhaps they've been falsifying their reports. That would explain why they postdated this one two months in advance. Let's see what else we can find in the office and on the dead man's person."

The files seem to be filled with a lot of medical jargon and range in dates that show a sure and steady progression of data and impressive results. It does, indeed, appear that there's some significant falsification of records occurring here. What were they so afraid of that they were willing to lie about their progress? Was nothing going according to plan? And what was the real progress in place here? The man's pockets are empty and there's a little blood on the collar that doesn't look like it was caused by the gun shot. The suit is also a size too large for the man.

Erich folds up the confidential report and pockets it. "We'd better hold onto this for evidence," he says. "It's a shame the rest of it was torn off and burned. It was likely important. Strange that he didn't just burn the whole thing." He shrugs. "I think we've found all there is to find here. We'd better keep moving and check the next door before someone shows up."

I wonder why "they" are not coming, clearly they heard the gunshot ... maybe "they" want us to finish the patients ?
Jean look at the doors, if there is a lunatic behind every door it will be a massacre.

"I reckon this guy was a patient trying to escape in someone else's suit. Lot of good it did him." Herman shrugs, "Poor sucker. But he seemed fairly normal other than being mad. I don't reckon it's the patients who are hiding in the airducts; I had wondered if they were trying to create super-soldiers but he ain't one fore sure." He shrugs again and follows Jean to the next door.

"What's in the air ducts is far worse," says Erich, moving along with the others. "Any patients who crawled in there would end up just as dead as the men we found earlier."

All of the other doors that line this corridor to the left are otherwise uninteresting offices though one had a dark stain on the carpet and a slaughter of books dropped from a nearby bookcase. Even in the minimal light from the dark and cloudy sky, the stain was clearly blood and about the size of a person. A single door to the right led into some sort of lounge, thick office chairs placed orderly and facing a large wireless radio by the wall. As you enter to take a quick look around, you hear nothing within the building but a few floor boards groaning with each step, nothing more -

A piercing shriek rends the silence, followed by a burst of static from the wireless that was once silent.

There are no other doors in this room but there is a final door left in the corridor.

"How come the wireless is affected? Come on, let's get this over with." Herman leads the way with his rifle ready. "You open the door and I'll enter first." He says grimly in front of the last door.

Erich nods and takes up his position in front of the door as before, with his left hand on the knob and his right in his pocket, gripping his pistol. When everyone else is in place, he tries the door.

What is going on in here? where is the man that tried the door's knob earlier where we hid?
Jean says
Surely he heard the gun shot, if they were looking after us why they have not come yet ... probably the gun made them to consider their steps I guess and where are the patients ? The blood stains are present with no bodies, those who managed to flee found their death in the air tunnels ... I have a feeling that something is hunting us.

Too many questions left unanswered.

Opening the door to the final set of doors at the end of the hall, they find themselves in another short length of corridor with a door left and right. There's a set of bare footprints made with a puddle of blood fading in the direction that turns toward the left. A door that is slightly ajar and which creaks shut on its own. Or because a person on the other side had just gently closed it. The door on the other side is open, revealing a small staff lounge with sinks at the far wall and a modern refrigerator alongside a coffee service still sitting on a trolley. Blood dripped from a crimson stain in the ceiling, puddling on a slope of plywood that's just sitting on the counter top, as though someone had placed it there before constructing repairs (or barricades) and didn't return for it. The vent near the stain had been torn off its screws.

Erich looks into the lounge just to make sure it's clear of any threats, though he knows that something could easily come out of the vent and gives it a wide berth, not even setting foot into that room. Then he gestures to the door that just closed, slipping a hand into his pocket and feeling the reassuring grip of the pistol. He positions himself against the wall next to the door.

Jean gurds the rear, in case someone will come from the lounge and the vent while Herman opens the ajar door.

The door remains closed. The handle moves so it's not locked but there's something heavy pressed against it from the other side. Heavy and unyielding. A barricade, perhaps? They can hear whimpering coming from the other side in response to them turning the handle.

The whimpering cuts off abruptly, and a faint whispering can be heard.
Listen,"I'm not them ... I'm not ... Not even here ... they can't ... can't make...."
Then a gun shot resounds through the house and the mutterings stop.

Erich's hearing has never been sharper. As soon as he hears the gunshot, he flings open the door, hoping he can save the person who has just shot himself before he dies. However, he doubts he'll be in time.

Erich finds himself in the officer's toilets and sees an officer sitting on the floor, slumped against the porcelain with blood and gray matter spattered on the wall behind him and a loose gun on the floor beside him. He's quite clearly dead. His red-rimmed eyes also reveals that he's been in tears for quite a while as do the crusted tears on his cheeks.

"Cor blimey, totally bonkers - and then he shot himself" Herman murmurs to himself. He shrugs, "Help yourself Jean, more guns the better I reckon." He takes a quick look in the cubicles and around the room.

Jean grabs up the pistol. The rest of the cubicles are empty though one of them smells strongly of vomit and has change and a crumpled receipt in the bottom, as though someone had tried to flush them away. The man's pockets contains nothing, which is odd in and of itself.

Herman looks to see what rank the officer was - was he part of the security team that Herman was to join. He pockets the change and scans the receipt. And then washes his hands!

The receipt is for printer ink. The man's fingers are stained with ink. He wears a fancy suit rather than a uniform and has no holster for the gun. He must have picked it off of somebody else.

Herman scratches his head. "this receipt is just for ink. What was he doing with a load of ink when you'd have thought he'd 'ave more important thing to worry about - like staying alive! Do you think they'd have a press here for some reason?"

"I suppose it's possible," says Erich. "There are shady things happening here, that's for certain. Maybe they're also running some sort of counterfeiting operation. Of course, in the end, he threw it away. I guess considering what's happening he didn't consider it important any more, or he wanted to get rid of it."
