OOC: Character Creation

The old Corbitt house is shrouded in dark rumours and fearful whispers. Its past residents have all had grisly experiences in there, and the few which are able to speak of it will not. Now, pulled in by the promise of money, several investigators try to to find the house's dark secret.

OOC: Character Creation

Post by BenTheRat »

This thread is for creating and discussing the characters you'll be playing in The Rat's Haunting [With Credit to Mr Handy]

We'll use standard character creation from the book for generating stats. Please make the following rolls:

Roll 3d6 each for STR, CON, POW, DEX, and APP.
Roll 2d6+6 each for SIZ and INT.
Roll 3d6+3 for EDU.

Personal Wealth will largely be determined by your character concept and Keeper fiat.

You can use Invisible Castle to make your rolls, both for character creation and in the game. You'll need to register and log in there in order to make entries in the Note section describing what you're rolling, but it's free. In the Character Name box, put the character's name, and be sure to use the same spelling consistently to make it easier to look up old rolls. For example: John Doe. Use The Rats Haunting for the campaign name.

Those are the only rolls you need to make for character creation. You are free to distribute the 3d6 rolls among the five stats that are rolled on 3d6, as well as to choose which 2d6+6 roll goes to SIZ and which to INT. EDU can be raised by making your character older. If you're still not satisfied with your rolls, let me know and we'll work something out. If your rolls are abnormally low, I may permit a re-roll of the entire set.

You'll also need to decide on your character's age. The minimum age allowed is EDU+6, but you can always choose to make your character older. For every 10 full years above the minimum, you get +1 to your EDU (which also gets you an extra 20 occupational skill points). However, for every full 10 years above 40 (i.e., starting at age 50), you must reduce one of the following stats by 1: STR, CON, DEX, or APP.

Your character has the following derived stats:
Idea: INT x 5
Luck: POW x 5
Know: EDU x 5 (maximum of 99)
Damage Bonus: Calculate STR+SIZ and consult the following table

12 or less: -1d6
13-16: -1d4
17-24: +0
25-32: +1d4
33 or more: +1d6
Maximum Hit Points: (CON+SIZ)/2 (round fractions up)
Maximum Magic Points: POW
Starting Sanity: POW x 5

Skills:
I generally disregard the the guidelines for occupations and and permit players to apply skill points to whatever skills they feel most suit their character concept. You get 20 x EDU skill points plus 10 x INT skill points. For the purpose of this game work out the two sets of skill points and then add them together. I'm trusting you to create a well rounded, believable character guided by your concept not a specific career.

While I generally disregard occupations if you describe yourself in terms of your career then please take a moment to look over the associated skills, it would for example be unusual for Dr Jones not to be competent at Medicine and first aid.

The only skill that cannot be raised is Cthulhu Mythos, which always starts at 0%. The other skills have base levels of 1% or higher, and the points you spend add to those base levels. Use the skill list provided on the Character sheet.

Starting skills should not be higher than 75 without a good reason which should be clear in your character concept. Older, more experienced characters are more likely to have exceptionally high skills, so they'll get more leeway in this area than youngsters. In any event, you shouldn't have any skill higher than 90 to begin. Spend all your skill points during character creation, as they're of no use once the game is underway.

Any questions PM me.

If the above seems overly daunting I'll happily generate a character for you either based on your concept or not.

We will be posting the characters in this thread after I approve them. Just send them to me and I'll verify they are ok and then you can post them here.

Name: Charles Francis
Age: 30
Sex: Male
Occupation: Executive Assistant
Yearly Income: -
College, Degrees: University of Notre Dame (History)
Birthplace: Manchester, New Hampshire

Appearance & Personality:
Good-looking in a thoroughly unremarkable way, Charles is distinguished above all by his brisk, efficient manner.

Background:
After graduating with a degree in History from Notre Dame he rapidly realized that spending his life in must old libraries was not for him. Wishing to see the world, he travelled to France, hoping to make use of his knowledge of languages to find work as a translator. He arrived, however, days after the War broke out in Europe. He chanced to meet a wealthy compatriot, the businessman Edwin G. Gilligrass, at the Les Deux Magots café and was promptly hired as Gilligrass's executive assistant. They returned to the United States shortly thereafter, and Charles has worked alongside the renowned industrialist since then, helping him with his correspondence and business issues, accompanying him in his travels and generally halping him to run the firm. In the course of this work, he has also visited Germany and London.

In November of 1920, however, the sudden death of Charles's parents left his distraught leaving him virtually unable to function. He was taken violently ill, to the point of doing permanent damage to his system (hence his low physical ability scores). He took an indefinite leave of absence and has, since then, sought to distract himself in many different ways - and mostly failing. He is now in Boston for a few weeks, staying at the house of a college friend's family, while trying to decide his next move.

Name: Sonny Goodman
Age: 24
Sex: Male
Occupation: Unemployed musician
Yearly Income:
College, Degrees: none
Birthplace: New Orleans

Appearance & Personality:
Image

Sonny is a generally a smiley, happy go lucky young man. Of slight build and looks, Sonny's greatest attribute is his disarming smile.

He always tries to present himself as a smart clean young man, though recently this has proved to be more difficult as he has no job and his clothes are getting a little threadbare and tired.

Background:
Sonny was born and raised in New Orleans. The eldest of 5 children, his mother died during the childbirth of his youngest sister.
His father tried his best to raise his kids well, working the docks during the day and as a musician during the nights. It was his father who taught Sonny to play the trumpet and inspire his love for music. While his father worked, his Aunt Loosa cared for Sonny and his siblings. His Aunt Loosa was deep into and spiritruality and vodun and she passed some of this knowledge and understanding onto Sonny.

When Sonny was 16 his father was killed in an accident on the docks. Sonny, had already started working at the docks by this time and was also playing with his father in the evenings. Shortly after this, Aunt Loosa died in strange circumstances. Whispers in town spoke of vengeful vodun spirits and that Loosa had exceeded her own abilities.

Sonny continued to raise his siblings in the same manner as his father but they were all taken into the local orphanage, as Sonny was working too many hours to oversee them all properly. He has not seen his brothers and sisters in the last 8 years.

Sonny became well known in the illegal clubs and speak-easies as a talented musician and began to earn a decent amount of money playing the new 'jazz' music. He also helped as a lookout and sometime mover/smuggler of the recently prohibited alcohol. As his popularity grew he started a love affair with a young white girl, the younger daughter of a rich banana importer. When the affair was discovered, Sonny had to flee New Orleans for his life. His plan was to run to Chicago and the flourishing jazz scene there but he was pursued there by the ruffians employed by the girl's father. The night after his first gig, he was jumped outside the club and given a beating that almost killed him.

Sonny decided to lay low and eventually drifted his way to Boston, looking to find work on the docks. He's been in Boston for 2 weeks and has found lodgings in a tiny room near the docks which he pays for by busking.

Name: Michael O’Connor
Age: 32
Sex: M
Occupation: Private Investigator (Former Police Officer)
Yearly Income: $4,500 ($22,500 assets; $2,250 in bank)
College, Degrees: College Diploma in Criminology
Birthplace: Hanover, New Hampshire

Appearance & Personality:
Michael is a reasonable handsome man with reddish-brown hair and blue eyes. He is generally easy going, but his outlook on life is fairly negative given his past. He has a habit of falling into bouts of drinking and chasing loose women which have a tendency to empty his bank account.

Background:
Michael is the child of working class Irish immigrants and grew up in the small town of Hanover in New Hampshire. Although he dreamed of one day going to Dartmouth College, his family's low income made that an impossibility and Michael was forced to obtain his post-secondary education at a community college in Boston. Obsessed with novels such as Crime and Punishment, he ended up studying criminology (which he excelled at) and was eventually hired onto the Boston police force. After a few years as a beat cop, where his brains and insight helped to solve a few larger crimes, he was slated to be promoted to a detective. However, before his promotion ever arrived, disaster struck. During an investigation into the assault of a lady of the night, Michael followed the evidence trail to the door of a wealthy and powerful family in Boston. Michael arrested the culprit, but man's family brought the full weight of their fortune to bear in fighting the charges. After pulling strings with the police department and paying off bribes to certain judges, the culprit went free and Michael lost his badge. Michael fell into depression and turned to booze and quick women to chase the pain away. Without steady income, he used whatever skills he had and started up an independent private investigator business. He has vowed to find the dirt on that family and eventually bring the man to justice. However, his constant boozing and womanizing has spun his life in another direction and now he merely floats from one job to the next as he tries to pay his bills.

Name: Warren Kaine
Age: 31 (We'll start the game March 1921)
Sex: Male
Occupation: Newspaper Reporter
Yearly Income:
College, Degrees:
Birthplace: Arkham, Mass

Appearance & Personality:
Image
Although he still carries a hint of innocence, Warren’s mental scars from the war give him a cynical, sometimes aggressive personality. He has developed little tolerance for fools, or those he deems fools. To those who knew him in the years prior to his going to Europe, he seems to have begun displaying a dangerous tenacity for finding the truth, that will either see him become a great crusading newspaper reporter, or just another corpse found in a dark alley.

Background:
From an early age Warren had only one ambition, to be a journalist. His uncle, Mathew, had worked as a reporter on various newspapers including the Santa Fe Herald and had been part of the reporting team that had covered the death of Billy the Kid in 1881. Although he had grown up far from the west that had so filled the tales of his uncle, Warren was filled with determination to not only be a newspaper reporter, but the best.
After school he had begun the slow climb from print assistant/janitor of a local broadsheet, which had much potential but made little effort to join the big boys, to second string reporter on local sporting events. But, as he was constantly told, even the best has to start somewhere.
Then the war in Europe had intervened, in 1916 he volunteered to fight for his country against the insidious forces of the German Kaiser. For over a year he survived the horrors of the western front, eventually returning to the states with a host of memories, a few odd scars, the worst of which is a livid scar that runs down the left side of his face from hairline to jaw, which still itches occasionally especially when the weather is changing, and recurring nightmares about being trapped below ground amongst the corpses of those he had known over there who never made it home.
Three years have passed since then, and his old ambitions have resurfaced. One good story and he could be made…

Background: At an early age, Jordie’s mother left her for a more promiscuous lifestyle and her father passed away in a construction accident. Jordie was sent away to St. Aquinas’ Children’s Home in Essex County, Massachusetts where her interest in history began. She began reading books of Greek myths, Ancient Egypt, and Chinese dynasties, but Jordie also indulged in books of adventure and mysteries.

By the time Jordie turned sixteen, she ran away from the orphanage with her friend, Alice, and ran off to Boston. Alice wanted to track down her parents, as Jordie wanted to return to her old home. They found Jordie’s home in the industrial park of Boston, and took residence in it as it was found to be abandoned, and the bank has liquidated all the furnitures. Living a very destitute lifestyle, Jordie and Alice often stole what they needed in order to survive. And often took expensive luxury goods.

As Jordie and Alice squatted in Jordie’s old home, they investigated into Alice’s family background. They discovered that Alice came from a wealthy family, however, her parents died and Alice’s uncle claimed the inheritance. Realizing that Alice’s uncle committed fraud, Jordie and Alice began collecting any evidences that would incriminate Alice’s uncle. Which involved a lot of trespassing and breaking and entering. Eventually, Alice was able to bring her uncle to jail for committing fraud, and took back her family inheritance. With Alice’s wealth, she purchased Jordie’s old home as an appreciation for Jordie’s help and friendship.

Jordie now attends Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, where she can enjoy reading literature and history. However, Jordie still enjoys the cat burglar lifestyle, as her home is decorated with furnitures, silverwares, antiques, and books that don’t quite belong to her.

The other children cheered him on. His name voiced in a steadily rising pace, urging him to do it. “Am I really doing this?”, the young boy thought and struck his victim with a rock.

Harrison Hawke

Name: Harrison Hawke
Age: 36 (16 minimum, raised to 36)
Sex: Male
Occupation: Writer
Yearly Income: $2,500
College, Degrees: High school diploma
Birthplace: Arkham, MA

Appearance & Personality:
Harrison is a tall and lean man, whose hard-living lifestyle make him look slightly older than he really is. With his soft blue eyes and tousled black hair, he can strike a dashing figure. His dress and manners tend to be on the crude and vulgar side of things, however, and as soon as he opens his mouth it is clear he is from the common classes.

Background:
Harrison was born the son of a carpenter. Rather than following his father into the family trade, however, he decided to pursue his dream of becoming a writer. He loved reading fanciful tales as a child, and when he came of age, he began working odd jobs to support himself as he churned out novels dealing with the fantastic and the horrible. His first few releases were well-received, although his lack of a higher education in literary devices meant that his work remained unpolished, suitable for cheap fiction magazines but not serious publishing houses.

Harrison squeezes out a living, still working odd jobs here and there while working on his writing. He has developed a drinking problem and is something of a drug fiend; he knows quite a bit about painkillers and opiates. He has hit a writer's block recently, and hopes to gain inspiration for his latest work by studying the occult and other esoteric subjects.

Languages Spoken: English, Latin (due to his Catholic upbringing)
