Lounge Car, Paris, 19:00

The lounge car is decorated in the Art Nouveau style with many a decorative flourish, particularly on the rich mahogany ceiling panels. Fresh flowers adorn the tables, at the moment blue orchids, with beautiful lamps adorning the window sills. Each table holds two very wide, oh so comfortable, arm chairs made with a blue-grey upholstery. The chairs are so large that they limit the number of people who can fit around the tables and therefore within the Lounge Car itself but on the plus side the chairs are perfectly comfortable and would be perfect for a quick snooze. It’s a perfect place to read by day, enjoy cocktails before dinner and a nightcap after dinner though the Bar Car works for a more active form of drinking. There is no smoking allowed in the Lounge Car. That is the province of the Bar Car. Occasionally a staff member may pass through this car to see if there is a need for any drinks, mostly coffee or tea, or anything else to keep people comfortable. Some people take their breakfast in this room rather than in their compartments or prefer to take a snack or light meal in this car. The teak wall panelling, inlaid with rosewood, are suffused with the scents and memories of bygone days. The carved scrolls, cornices, and scallops at the friezes and borders, are adorned with gilded metal flowers and that reach up but never reach the arched ceilings.

Charles enters the Lounge Car and takes a look around. The space is excellently appointed and he moves for one of the plush chairs, choosing one at a table with a window and below one of the fine lamps. He takes a moment to smell one of the blue orchids filling a vase on his table and then opens his book, a worn copy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's On The Social Contract, and begins to read. If a waiter/attendant is on hand, he politely requests a bottle of wine to be brought to him from the bar car. He stipulates the appellation would, ideally, be a St. Saint-Émilion from Château Ausone.

Charles is currently the only occupant but that is bound not last very long. While the Lounge Car doesn't have its own attendant, there is a fellow in uniform who walks past at one point who takes the order and the bartender from the Bar Car appears a few moments later with the requested drink even as the Orient Express begins to move out of the station and out into the darkened world of Paris beyond. Charles' observational skills notice nothing out of the ordinary thus far.
OOC,All new arrivals may read the prior post from Charles as he is currently still reading his book.

Some minutes after the train has departed the station, Wolfgang enters the Lounge Wagon.

Wolfgang Ritter is a neatly dressed middle aged gentleman. He wears dark green tweeds with leather elbow patches and decent shoes. There's a red, star-like badge pinned to his lapel.
KNOW-check:,The red star symbolises the Popular Front, a broad coalition of leftist and center-left groups. The star was also borne in the flag of the International Brigades fighting against Franco.

He has medium length blond hair and rugged, sun worn features. He moves and talks with the casual self-confidence of someone who has seen much of the world and who has great confidence in his abilities.
Although Wolfgang is quick to smile and befriend people, he never completely loses his reserve.

He gives the other occupant of the wagon a friendly smile and takes a seat on the opposite side of the aisle. He puts a well-worn copy of Goethe's Faust on the armrest and pulls out a notepad and a pencil. After flicking through the book a few minutes, he takes some notes and looks around pensively.

He looks appreciatively at the title of Charles's book and tries some French:

Poor pidgin French,Your the book is very tasty, yes? I love the Rousseau!

Wolfgang's broken French brings a smile to Charles' face. Hearing the germanic accent in the man's french, he wonders if perhaps the man is from Alsace and so attempts to respond in German.

Apologies fellow, yet the Germany I talk is same wellness as your French I think. Faust is good tale, but devil story is very black yes?
Charles chuckles slightly at the communication struggles and tries to find some middle ground. In English he says: "Our German and French are not quite up to snuff, perhaps you speak English?"

To Elena, he nods and wishes her a pleasant evening in French.

Interesting English with a heavy German accent, "My English and French are two beans in shell, yes? But no problem with international fellowship, no?"
He holds up Faust and says in slow and clear, though somewhat academic German:
Slow and clearly pronounced German (I'm sure you get a bonus for that),"Goethe writes as much about the human condition as Rousseau does. Elena's smile widens as she sits down in the offered seat. She is tall and slender, with black hair descending to her shoulders, and rather pretty. She wears a stylish black dress, with a lightweight blue overcoat. She has a black fur-lined hat on her head, and her hands are covered by white gloves. Slung over her right arm is a large black handbag, and tucked under her left is the newspaper.

"Thank you, Comrade," she says in English. "My name is Elena Orloff, and I'm always pleased to meet fellow travelers."

He tries to guide her into the conversation the two men were having.

"Are you travelled to Istanbul also?"

The train car is warm and comfortable as they move out across the Parisian cityscape, glimpses of brightly lit streets and passing buildings visible through windows whose blinds have been drawn partially up. At present there is no one in the car but for the trio. Everyone else must still be putting their things away or getting comfortable in their compartments. Soon there is likely to be a rush of people eager to meet and greet but for now there is a gentle quiet.
OOC,You don't need to tuck English comments away within Spoilers as the majority can speak it well and the odd one out can simply not read any non-spoilered dialogue as it's naturally English.

Johnny definitely stuck out like a sore thumb the chime of his spurs announcing his arrival before most could spot the cowboy hat which the the chagrin of most "proper people" he was still wearing. He gave a nod to the three people in the lounge and looked for a seat near the only person he sort of knew on the train. "Yall don't mind me sittin here do yall?" he asked as he smiled at the trio.

Wolfgang pulls in his legs so Johnny can pass, offering him a heavily accented "Wilkome" as he does so. He takes his notebook and Faust and tucks it under his seat, so there's more room. After taking a sip from his pernod, he looks at Elena and speaks with a sad tone to his voice.

"Ve try stop what happen but did not realise."

He sadly shakes his head and his hand goes to the badge on his lapel, which he strokes affectionately.

"I vere in ze 15th brigade. At Segovia after zey blew ze bridge."

A tone of anger creeps in his voice and you notice his right hand is squeezing the upholstery of his seat rather vigorously.
"If Franco vas victorious, it vas not because of no fire in ze heart's of his opp..opno...", he swallows and takes a breath of air. "of his Feinde."

He leans back into his couch and shakes his head again.

"Sorry, not vant lose comp..cop..calm."

Charles puts down his book and corks his bottle of wine. He stands up from his chair and buttons his jacket and straightens his tie. Pausing, with his hand on the neck of the bottle, he speaks to his newly met companions. In his perfect English he says: "I am famished and believe I will see what is on offer in the dining car. Perhaps we might consider this conversation later in the evening? Perhaps cocktails in the bar car?"

With that, Charles exits to the dining car with his Rousseau tucked under his arm and the bottle of wine in his hand. To the American, Charles offers a slight nod in greetings as he passes.

Dominic made his way into the Lounge Car, which was deserted for the most part, save those staff members that may pass through while on duty. He gazed at the comfort afforded the guests in this car and made a mental note to come back to this one to read, and have his morning meals, and possibly tea before bed time. The car was clean, inviting, and had no stench of tobacco, but was filled with the scents of fine hardwoods and flowers, all canvassed with an arched ceiling of masterwork quality. He remarked to himself as he strolled past the comfortable looking seating, of how fine the rectory would be if such adornment were allowed, but if one were to remain humble, one would not have such luxuries. leaving this car and onto the next he continued his slow walk. He felt thirsty and a bit hungry now. He hoped that the Dinning car would be just as inviting or at least better than that corridor...

A reasonably pretty young woman enters the Lounge Car and sits down directly opposite from the lone newspaper reading man. She moves silently enough that he doesn't hear her and doesn't seem to notice that she's there. She then pulls out her lipstick and a small hand mirror from her handbag, touching up her bright red lips with a smirk on her face. It will certainly be interesting when the lone man lowers his newspaper and suddenly spots her there.

French,"Your French is quite good for a German. If I were not a native, I would have taken you for a Frenchman. I hope you don't fine me too rude coming to sit with you but you are a very attractive and very intriguing man and I simply could not resist coming over to make an impression. My name is Nico Dubois. Pleased to make your acquaintance."

You seem a clever sort of fellow, if unusually restrained for a German. I jest! I jest! Oh, you must think terribly of me. I must seem horribly nosey just coming down here and sitting down with you. How positively American of me! You see, I'm actually terribly shy and I don't know anyone else on this train. Oh, I cover my shyness well with my prattle but what else can I do? Lounge Car, Paris, 20:45
Larry Clinton and His Orchestra with Bea Wain - Deep Purple

The Smoking Car is almost empty, barring two couples that are remarkably alike in their own way. Each couple contains an older man and a younger woman, though there the similarities end. One of the women, a blond, is highly attractive and completing a crossword puzzle while her husband pointedly ignores her in favor of reading the newspaper. The other woman is a perky brunette who leans forward over the table, speaking in conspirational tones with a sly grin in French to a rather less committed older man who has a newspaper but isn't reading it right at this moment.

The door to the communications compartment between the Smoking Car and the Lounge Car opens and Amadi enters, followed by Schiller who has Cecil and Charles a step behind (in order to fit through the doorway and the corridor) who were holding onto Schiller's arms and seem to be guiding him from behind. The newspaper-reading and crossword-completing couple hardly look up but the pretty brunette's gaze is quickly captured.

"This looks serious," says the perky brunette in a French accent. "Is this gentleman under arrest for some reason? How scandalous!" She seems rather excited by the whole idea.

Cecil takes one look at the talent in the lounge and says quietly to Amadi, "Dib dib, there you are, this train isn't so barren after all. Looks like there may be dragons guarding the fair damsels however. Are you up to the challenge?" He eyes up the newspaper-wielding gentlemen. To the perky brunette,

"Madame, we are but lowly squires attending this fallen knight back to his castle."
As an aside he says to her in a low voice, "Too much to drink, I fear!"

He blocked up the aisle for nearly half an hour before this other fellow..." he gestures toward Charles "...noticed upon attempting to leave."

The train conductor enters the Smoking Car and says in a clear yet polite voice, "Attention, we are pulling into Epernay train station. Attention, we are pulling into Epernay station." He continues on to the sleeping car unless halted, seeming content to let the men continue their business. Moments later there's a light squeal of brakes as the train begins to slow its speeds on approach to the train station.

OOC:   Wolfgang Ritter is a neatly dressed middle aged gentleman.

Wolfgang enters from the smoking car, carrying a bottle of champagne in a cooler and four glasses.

He places the cooler and glasses on an empty table for four and then steps over to Schiller and the man investigating him and addresses him in English with a thick German accent.

"How iz he doing? Are you ze doctor?"

Two men move down the aisle to the group around the prone passenger. The first is slim and dressed in impeccable evening wear. He is carrying a heavy leather bag, "Here you go, Doc; one bag delivered as promised!" He says cheerily in a upper class English accent. He gives the bag to Bedal and eyes Wolfgang narrowly. He then smiles winningly at the two ladies and raises a questioning eyebrow to the young Iranian-looking guy lounging by the side. To the priest he says, "I hope this poor chap won't be requiring your services just yet, Father. But he does look rather done in." He peers closely at Schiller. "Still no change I see." He frowns, rubs his forehead and looks rather puzzled.

The train moves off again as they stand around the aisle. Caroline Roby take a seat on a pair of chairs to keep out of the way while Bedell helps Schiller onto the table like a mute puppy. Unfortunately the table isn't long enough to lay anyone down. The only thing long enough for that is a sleeping compartment sofa bed. Having him perched up there does make it easier to check him over with stethoscope and other tools.
Bedell can see without a first aid check, revealing that the man seems to be in good health. His heart rate is pretty normal, neither fast nor slow. Physically he seems fine.
Bedel can see with a successful Medicine check,if he is fine physically then that means he is either under the influence of a mild sedative (though his heart rate and pupil dilation doesn't support that) or perhaps he is hypnotised. A subtle epileptic seizure could cause someone to blank out like this but they're normally quite rigid. Perhaps catatonic schizophrenia? That can sometimes occur at random points. Perhaps he has something marked down on any of his ID?

"I wonder if there are any hypnotists aboard this train," says Mrs. Roby. "I do know a few chaps who are such skilled mesmerists that they could do it to you without you even becoming aware of it but I doubt there happens to be one aboard this train. Perhaps someone ought to try smelling salts or even a quick slap across the face to bring him around? I know it sounds rather harsh, but isn't that what you normally do to snap people out of a moment?"
Image
Schiller yawns widely, eyes flicking from one to the other, and his fingers twitch spasmodically for a moment. After a long moment's silence as the others (presumably) watch him, he returns to his previous state of inactivity.
Image
"Absolutely fascinating," says Belanger, making a point to peer over Bedel's shoulder as he picks through the man's pockets and quickly checks inside his wallet for any medical information.
Spot Hidden Check for everyone except for Bedel, success means you see he has ID for a Dr. Gerhard Schiller (his picture matches), who was born 43 years ago in Königsberg, Germany and whose listed occupation is Archaeologist. He has a Nazi Party membership card in his wallet which those who are familiar with the Nazi Party would immediately identify as necessary for anyone in an academic career in Germany. He has a photograph of an older woman in his wallet. Perhaps his mother or someone similar? He has 200 francs in his wallet. He also has an expensive silver cigarette case containing cigarettes, silver lighter, clean cloth and a keyring. He also has a Yennifer Second Class Car: Compartment 1 ticket for the Orient Express that mentions a Baggage Car item. There is no sign of any medical information nor any medicine receipts in his wallet.
Know Roll or History Roll on successful Spot Hidden or Germany background, reveals that the Nazi Party membership card has a low member number. This means that the man had joined well before Nazi Party membership was a required part of life. In fact, his member number is quite low, suggesting that he was a Nazi before the Nazi Party was even popular. This would give him quite a bit of unofficial clout as a lot of supporters see early membership as a sign of a true believer.
Image
Amadi stands back a bit, letting Cecil get a good vantage point if he wants to look at the various things inside the man's pockets (+20% to Spot Hidden check).

Schiller makes a strange buzzing noise, his nostrils instinctively twitching at the smell, and he starts leaning back, tongue clicking against the roof of his mouth. His manner is strange, almost alien, and it grows more disturbing as his facial muscles twitch in a bizarre manner unseen before in normal human expression although the twitches and movements are certainly ones that humans are capable of doing.

The Lounge Car aisle is reasonably wide and could allow two people to guide the fellow if they both stood side by side behind him. Unfortunately, a quick thought about the Sleeping Car aisle reveals that all won't be so lucky. People could certainly follow in an orderly line but a line it will be. The sleeping car compartments could only fit four people standing if they all squished in though a fifth person laying down wouldn't be such a problem. Luckily the conductors would have turned all the couches into beds by this point so it shouldn't be too onerous to put him into a lying position.

"Of course doctor" Michael produces a small rosary from his pocket, "Does anyone know the man, and whether he is of the faith or not?"

He looks directly at the Englishman, Cecil, "Did you by chance find anything of relevance amongst his papers?"

Schiller slumps in their arms as a dead weight. Luckily he was seen getting onto the Yennifer Sleeping Car which is the first car hooked onto this one. Otherwise it might have been a painfully long walk.

Amadi nods at Cecil but otherwise says nothing, content to sit down on one of the chairs to get out of the way and seeming confused by the sudden turn of events.

Lounge Car, Chalons-sur-Marne, 21:41
Larry Clinton and His Orchestra with Bea Wain - Deep Purple

Cecil has hardly a chance to respond to the priest as Wolfgang starts guiding Schiller further down the aisle. The man is clearly a heavy weight. A dead weight. Elena strides down the aisle first, opening the door to the Yennifer Sleeping Car. As the group leaves, those left behind look around at themselves in a far more empty car.

There is a pretty Frenchwoman now sitting on her own who gazes up prettily at the Arabic gentleman before starting to re-set the table that Bedel had cleared with a quiet, "Well." There's also a friendly-seeming older woman sitting at the other table who seem pretty welcoming. The Arabic-looking gentleman still stands in the aisle, scratching his head and looking thoughtful. He clasps something at his chest, frowns, then shakes his head as though rejecting some notion that has occured to him. Charles takes a seat in front of the pretty Frenchwoman though he has his legs in the aisle as though ready to get up at any point.

The train conductor enters the Smoking Car and says in a clear yet polite voice, "Attention, we are pulling into Chalons-sur-Marne train station. Attention, we are pulling into Chalons-sur-Marne station." He continues on to the sleeping car unless halted, seeming content to let the men continue their business. Moments later there's a light squeal of brakes as the train begins to slow its speeds on approach to the train station.

Parker raised an eyebrow at the woman leaving, but thought nothing of it. He turned to the Roby instead.

"Do you travel often?" Parker said. He tilt his head slightly away, presenting the lady with more of his profile, before correcting himself. "I do apologize, where are my manners... Captain Parker at your service, madam."

"A long lost love... and closure, Mrs. Roby. Closure." His eyes briefly wanders out the window before refocusing.

"But I will not burden you with the details of my story. How about you, Mrs. Roby? What brings you and your husband out to such a place at this time?"

"Curiosity is a healthy thing and nothing to apologise for," says Mrs. Roby. "Great Britain and France are known to be rather puritan about art and creativity and are quick to denounce anything that requires an alternative mode of thought to correctly understand it."

"Hmm..." Parker said. "I do agree that curiosity is a wonderful thing. I once devoted myself to experiencing new things around Europe in my youth. Not exactly the same thing as your literary pursuits, but I hope that we still can understand what drives us both."

"I do admit that I am not the most scholarly of all individuals on this earth, so I do not understand what you mean by "alternative mode of thought." Would you care to educate me on this?"

"A form of alternative spiritualism, in a manner of speaking, or alternative comprehension of the value and weight of the human soul upon expansion into the essential cosmos that belongs to us all." She smiles lightly, blushes a little. "I suppose in trying to explain it I must sound somewhat like what an esoteric physicist must sound. What I mean to say is that there are many layers to our reality that we are only now beginning to peel back. There is more weight and density to science, and more fragility in it, for the essential laws that abound in our little pocket of the universe, nay universes, are not necessarily the same laws that would be found elsewhere. Do you see?"

Re: Lounge Car

"Hmmmmm...." Parker mumbled softly. "I'm afraid that what you describe is beyond the scope of my understanding. However, I also do not see why anybody would be so perturbed by what you say that they would be willing to burn books to keep it from being known. Are you suggesting that the laws of physics that govern our reality may not apply to... to... other layers of this reality? I may not fully understand the knowledge that you are seeking, but if you are asking me, you are doing a good thing by choosing to seek these books," Parker said.

"Well, it was considered quite heretical and, in a few cases, quite debauched," says Mrs Roby. "You have to remember that those on the forefront of science and philosophy are always rather unusual and eccentric. There was also quite a bit of pressure from the Christian front as these books discuss pagan deities as the embodiments of such scientific principles."

Re: Lounge Car

"Still, it does seem to be mad to be burning books that one dislikes when others may long for it," Parker said, leaning back into his seat. The easiest place to sit would be across the aisle and in front of Mrs. Roby as each set of chairs is, regrettably, only in facing pairs. Luckily Mr. Roby, who had been about to sit down, actually offers the chair facing his wife as Dr. Bedel approaches - correctly interpreting the man's need. Even so, he places his three books on the table between Mrs. Roby and Dr. Bedel, as well as a carved wooden box about the size to contain large playing cards. The topmost book catches his eye, a book bound in all-white cloth book with yellow lettering detailing titles and author: Alexander Roby is the author, the title is 'Der Wanderer durch den See' (which is German for 'The Walker by the Lake').

Mr. Roby speaks,
Latin,"Oh, I can speak quite good Latin, German, and reasonable French, as can my wife though she is only passable in Latin and German, better in French and Gaelic. Did you wish some time alone with these two? You seem quite stressed?"

Mrs. Roby leans back in her seat and says in her Irish accent: "Then it is settled! We can't let one of Britain's top minds land in the hands of the enemy." She turns to look at the Wolfgang and Elena. "If Mr. Ritter's words are to be believed, he is no friend of the Nazis. What about you, miss? Are you going to take your nations tentative peace treaty as suggestive of an alliance or are you going to do what any right thinking woman should do and help assist this kind doctor passed the border?" Realising she has spoken a little louder than she perhaps should have, she looks over at Kieran and then Lily with a scowl. "If only there were a private place to discuss things on this train. If we try to shoo them out of here, they will only complain. Do you think they are eavesdropping?"

Elena looks deep into Dr. Bedel's eyes. "Of course I will help," she says without hesitation. "I am sure Herr Ritter will be glad to help as well. I am a travel writer, Doctor, and my next destination is Istanbul. Besides, Paris may soon no longer be a safe place." She glances over at Kieran and Lily trying to determine if either of them is paying attention. "Perhaps one of us could draw them off, invite them into the Bar Car for drinks?"

Lily scowls back at Mrs. Roby, making it clear just how much attention she's been paying. "I do apologize, I didn't realize that a train car right between the bar and the sleeping compartments would be so private. Obviously this space is only for you, and God forbid anyone else dare to sit here."

Her eyes meet Elena's for a split second, and she immediately shrinks back in shame. She balls her hands into fists and rises from the chair, spine rigid. "That... was very rude of me. I-- I really am sorry--" She swallows whatever else she might have said and looks at the entrance to the Smoking Car again.

Lily curtsies hastily, murmuring "forgive me, forgive me" before looking back at Elena. She relaxes visibly at her smile, and even smiles a little herself, but the embarrassment doesn't leave her face. "I'm really not myself this evening, I don't know what's gotten into me." She titters as she accepts Elena's hand.

"It's a pleasure to meet you too, Miss Orloff. I'm Lily Gavigan, and my brother Charles is with me--well, not with me, he's in the Smoking Car right now, but he's on the train. With me. We're traveling together."

Mrs. Roby smiles back but it's a cold smile. "You don't need to be actively eavesdropping to do so ... as you so thoughtfully pointed out when you retorted at my insinuation. War is coming to Europe and one does need to choose sides. Considering the level of danger that can so readily surround us it is important to pay attention to those who are within listening distance of your conversation. Lounge Car, France, 22:15
Larry Clinton and His Orchestra with Bea Wain - Deep Purple

Mrs. Roby shakes her head in answer to Parker, brushing him off. "Very well then," said Mrs. Roby. "Let us ask the question of this particular journey." She pauses dramatically as she shuffles the cards with her eyes closed, her fingers dancing across the backs of them like a gypsy between each shuffle. "I will do two readings in one. The first line will be the Past, Present and Future of Dr. Bedel. The second will be for Miss Lily Gavigan." She sways slightly as she begins to place them face up on top of the pristine white table cloth.
Image
"Dr. Bedel, The Fool is in your past.... You have brought all of your worldly possessions with you aboard this train in order to set out to recreate yourself through building a new life, free and unsullied, and away from the cruelties and barbarity of your home land. You have arranged for opportunities to bring freedom to the chains of others but in so doing you have taken a risk, a grave risk, and have leapt forward over the abyss in hopes of coming to land. You have hopelessly miscalculated, however, given the cards beyond this one. Watch your step. Innocence, while admirable, could well mean your death. Leave such childish notions firmly behind you for the rest of this trip."

"Dr. Bedel, The Death card is in your present.... A card that encapsulates the great unknown. You are in a transitional phase but it is not the transition from life to death that you should fear. Oh no, the question is whether the transition to your new self, your new life, is the one that you truly desire or whether it shall be something else entirely. Accept that changes happens. Swim with the flow of transition. But make certain you reach the shore that you intend lest you find yourself truly disfigured."

"Dr. Bedel, The Judgement card is in your future and with it a day of reckoning.... Beyond the act of destruction that marks your transition into your new life will come a rebirth that integrates all parts of the self that lies remaining. You will need to answer for both your actions and inactions, for both cause and effect. Where you have been determines where you are going, and what you have done plays a role in what you still must do. Without this card, you would have no choice as to the transition that will be inflicted upon you in the present times. With this card, you have choice, not a choice in whether your life will change, for it has changed in the Fool and will change in Death, but a choice as to where that change shall take you." She looks at him, really looks at him. "Do not look so grave. At least now you know that you still have an opportunity to make your own way."

Then Mrs. Roby turns her attention to Lily.

"Miss Lily Gavigan, The Ace of Cups is in your past.... A nice card. Everything starts with love and thus is the case with this journey. It has taken the waxing and waning of many moons of planning but finally the one who loves you most in the world has brought you to this train as part of some transitioning process. There has been a meeting already here, I think, whether hours ago or a moment ago, which is full of potential and may eventually lead to true love and happiness. Perhaps...."

"Miss Lily Gavigan, The Nine of Swords is in your present.... Ahh, the paradox of humanity. That which makes you feel secure also releases your internal fears and regrets and terrors to haunt you. Regret, anxiety and anguish face you and surround you and it wells up from within. You cannot hide from that which burns within you. You face a deeply rooted emotional pain that will not simply leave you. What is it you have failed to take responsibility for? Or what is it that you have distorted which distracts you from the true horrors that surround your very presence? Are you afraid of the shadows of the wall and failing to see the knife clasped within the fist? If the situation continues, if you continue to see problems that don't exist, you will be pierced by the real problems that seek to do you harm. You have the power to face and destroy all of your fears which is proven by...."

"Miss Lily Gavigan, The Knight of Wands is in your future.... A card signifying daring, courage and enthusiasm. In this case I think that the Knight is a person around you, an event that you will experience, and a part of yourself that you must bring to the surface. It will come into your life quickly and unexpectedly and will set your life ablaze. A series of swift events that will change your world forever. You cannot hold onto the person whose spontaneity will brush across your life and despite the promise of violence that simmers below the surface this figure will be your brief salvation through the Knight's warmth and generosity of spirit. The energy within you will be impossible to hold in. You will release it. You will feel the courage to explore as an unstoppable force, as though the very act of defying it were the more difficult path. Watch only that you do not burn yourself in your enthusiasm. For you, this will be a time of many choices and many chances. Act quickly."

Parker gives a friendly smile towards Lily. "If the cards say so, it must be true, no? You are a lucky person to get such an omen. God knows that I have never found one in my life."

"I urge you to make no attempt to find one in the bar or the dining room just past this door though. There was a madman who claimed to be able to see invisible and paralyzed people in the dining room. Was making strange gestures in the air while apologizing as if he was rifling through some invisible pockets. So that makes him both a madman and a mad thief, I suppose. He mentioned something about the German archaeologist being somehow related to the 'mysterious phenomenon' as well."

Communications compartment,is actually a term to describe the covered space between two train compartments that allows the train to move in segments while still allowing people to proceed from one sleeping car to the other. There is one thread in Social Cars for the Communications Compartment though indeed there are several different compartments. This is because folks might like a briefly quiet spot to chat and not because there is only one such compartment available. These days, they may well have a portable telephone available on the train (of the backpack and receiver variety) though you would need to ask the staff to access it.

OOC,It's amazing just how hard it is to get in contact with people in that day and age!
Listen Check,There's a horrible cry, somewhat gutted by the intervening communications compartment between this Lounge Car, and the next. It's coming from the Jeanette Sleeping Car.

"We have to hurry," says the girl, giggling happily as she comes in from the Smoking Car, leaving the door to the communications compartment flung open behind her. She grins up at her mother and father (Mr. & Mrs. Roby) as she passes.

"We have time," says the boy a bit grumpily, shutting the door behind her. "Don't be a nuisance or someone will complain and we'll need to go straight to bed."

The two children are making a bee line down the aisle to the Jeanette Sleeping Car door.

Lily looks up from her book and stares at the door to the Jeanette Sleeping Car after Nico and Dr. Bedel have left. Then her eyes widen, and she snaps the book shut as she scrambles to her feet.

She turns to the adults in the room. "It was lovely to meet you all. Thank you for the reading, the book, and the pleasure of your company," she says hastily. "I should be getting back to my compartment now."

Lily heads straight for the door to the Sleeping Car, stumbling a bit as she tries to push past the Roby children.

German,Herr Wolfgang. I do apologize. I may have not told the truth and actively mislead others regarding my true identity. I am Frank Miller, a German like you. I asked to speak with you in private because I stumbled upon something that could significantly delay the train if discovered by the train authorities and, depending on where the train stops, destroy both you and me.
He stares blankly into Wolfgang
German,Miss Roby made a suggestion that a German communist man helped a certain Nazi Doctor into his bed. It is a dangerous thing, I think, to be communist and going through Germsny. The Leader hates communists even more than he hates the Jews-if that can even be possible. I can help you get through this land if you help me. I need your help in hiding the secret I discovered.

Wolfgang, although the details are hard to see, you can see a Nazi swastika.
German,There has been a murder, Herr Wolfgang. I have not committed this crime, but the conductor was mysteriously trying to lead people into Jeanette Compartment 5 when I brought the man to you. I decided to investigate the room myself and discovered a body. You must help me destroy the body, Herr Wolfgang. I have no interest in remaining in France or Germany when the war begins. If we do not, the train will be stopped for days, possibly weeks.
He puts the identification card back into his inner pocket.
German,Herr Wolfgang, I do realize that it is difficult to trust anyone these days, but I do believe in Honor among Thieves. I pulled the identification card and purposely drew attention to it so that you would not feel deceived if you discovered it after we hid the body. It was a gesture of trust. Even if my mad Leader would not understand the concept of such matter if I brained the man with it, many of the others in the party do. It is utterly imperative that I reach Germany and leave before the war begins. If you help me, I will do my earnest to protect you for the rest of this voyage.

German:,"We should go and have a look right away."
Before he heads off to the Jeannette Car,he asks one final thing.
German:,"Was it Schiller? Did you get the card from him? Is he the dead guy? And please, there is no need to call me Herr, I watched many friends die in a fight that would have helped make a world where no one had to call anyone Herr."

Everyone except for Mr. Parker makes their way into the next sleeping car. Mr. Parker hears nothing but the varied sound of train wheels on tracks and the slight vibration of the train's motion to keep you company interrupted by the gentle squeal of brakes as the train reduces speed in preparation of reaching the next train station: Nancy.
Mr. Parker, can see through the open curtains a single woman wearing a mink fur coat with her hands pressed into a muffler, shivering against the cold and a large suitcase by her feet.

The panel is hidden behind the wooden rounded panelling near the door, revealed by the tell tale lines that break up the wood and the metal lock which is quite small but doing the job. It doesn't feel hot. The lock doesn't feel hot either.

As the train sits quietly at the station, the lounge car seems strangely sad and disturbed, as though it had been abandoned and cut off from all the world around it. The clock reads 04:57. The train station outside is different from the one he had seen bare moments ago.

As Wolfgang double checks the station again he sees that it is different again. The sign reads: Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof. He must be more exhausted than he thought. Time seems to be sweeping past a little too quickly. To make matters worse, he recognises one of the SS officers standing on the platform. A notoriously stern and humourless man who worked for the Institut für Wehrwissenschaftliche Zweckforschung ("Institute for Military Scientific Research"), under the Ahnenerbe, Doctor Konstantin Heydrich was the younger brother to no less than SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich himself. The man next to him was unknown but he was an SS-Rottenführer and looked to be a capable military figure, judging by his stance. Neither of them appeared to be overly watchful, though, which was a relief. They may have just been taking the train for transport reasons.

Wolfgang rubbed his eyes and looked again. Stuttgart...impossible. Despite the awkwardness, he couldn't help but think about a fond memory from a long time ago. His father had taken him to Stuttgart when he was a boy, he couldn't have been more than ten years old and the trip had got him so excited, he had fallen and scraped his knee when he'd gotten off of the train. He remembered fondly the candied apple he had got as a painkiller, but then a frown returned to his features as he recognized the officer. Heydrich...what a pencil pusher...

The pencil pusher would undoubtedly arrest Elena if he got the chance / suspicion that she were a Communist agent. That would be problematic for Wolfgang's long-term plans.

"...Impossible! We passed Carlsrume... but... what?!" Jonathan looks outside, back at his greatcoat, and then back outside. "Did the Fuhrer order time to go backwards or something? Did H.G. Wells design this train?"

Jonathan looks around for something-anything- to jimmy open the window.

Then the window pops open and it's as though a spell is broken. With a sudden rush of static energy, the room fills with sunlight and Parker can see the Stuttgart Platform just outside of his window. He can hear the German voices crankily wondering if they must all be late to work and considering whether the Orient Express will be able to make up time. Considering how long it's been, that is unlikely.

The Train Manager enters the lounge car, tipping his head to Parker as Parker looks his way. "Good evening, M'sieur. I regret to advise the train's delay has been caused by children foolishly letting off the danger signal down the tracks. We will attempt to make up time where we can but regrettably we will still be delayed at every stop. Would you like some tea or coffee or a newspaper, perhaps?"

The train whistles and sets off with a put-put-putting sound.

"I heard the French honeymooners get off at the last stop," says Nico. "I think they will have a very romantic time. I think I glimpsed some men in rather fine SS uniforms enter the train. Are they friends of yours?" She pauses, then puts a hand to her lips. "Oh, silly me! I'm sure you don't know every German on this train."

The skies outside are cloudy and grey but the interior is as cheerful as usual as waitors come out to fetch back the used cutlery and plates. There's a heavy static charge to the air, however, and it's enough to ruin a perfectly good hairstyle by setting the little wisps of hair up on end.
Seon, the stone gives him an electric shock!

Lounge Car, Germany, 9:25

The lounge car is decorated in the Art Nouveau style with many a decorative flourish, particularly on the rich mahogany ceiling panels. Fresh flowers adorn the tables, at the moment blue orchids, with beautiful lamps adorning the window sills. Each table holds two very wide, oh so comfortable, arm chairs made with a blue-grey upholstery. The chairs are so large that they limit the number of people who can fit around the tables and therefore within the Lounge Car itself but on the plus side the chairs are perfectly comfortable and would be perfect for a quick snooze. As the train sits quietly at the station, the lounge car seems strangely sad and disturbed, as though it had been abandoned and cut off from all the world around it.

Two individuals enter the Smoking Car.
Image
The woman is a ravishingly beautiful figure in a clinging black dress that would seem a little out-of-place for anyone else aboard this train. Her very body, all curves and suppleness, seems to have been poured into its rather attractive design that has chinchilla fur cuffs and an expensive diamond necklaces laying upon her plunging neckline. She looks like a movie star. She seems like one as well. She pauses in the doorway a moment, even though she enters first before the man, and lets her gaze land on each person in turn with utter neutrality before she graces those individuals inside with a smile that seems to cut through tension like a cleaver through bone. (APP 18, high POW).
Image
The man who follows her into the smoking car is already fumbling inside his coat for a pack of cigarettes and a lighter. He is blandly unattractive, with a particularly aggressive Germanic look that would appeal to all kinds of lowbrow newspaper comics, and whose gaze seems utterly bored and disinterested with these other individuals in the car. He pauses beside one of the tables and gestures the lady to take a seat. He is clearly an SS officer and for those who glanced out the window at Stuttgart they can tell that he is one of the two SS officers who came on board.
Schiller,This is a notoriously stern and humourless man who worked for the Institut für Wehrwissenschaftliche Zweckforschung ("Institute for Military Scientific Research"), under the Ahnenerbe, Doctor Konstantin Heydrich was the younger brother to no less than SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich himself. He is normally followed by a SS-Rottenführer, a capable military man, though Schiller forgets his name. Nothing but the best for Doctor Heydrich. It isn't surprising to see him aboard this train though the clearly Slavic beauty beside him seems a surprise for the man's frequently stated Aryan desires.

If there is anything I can do to help the glorious Reich, please let me know!" The words seem to stick in his throat but he manages to make them sound convincing. This was the last thing he needed, Heydrich's reputation preceded him...

The door to the Smoking/Bar Car opens to reveal a smiling bartender who looks quite eager to be helpful, with his hands folded in front of his lap. He isn't preventing access to the Smoking Car, per se, he just doesn't seem to believe anyone should wish to pass through. "Greetings, sir, is there anything I can do to help you, Mr. Parker? The bar will be open from 10AM though if you are quite eager I am sure I can allow you through."
Elena, gets an - http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4664765 - odd feeling about the bartender's smile. Is he waiting for something? Expecting something? He doesn't seem to know Mr. Parker so it's likely got nothing to do with him but there is a sense of quiet expectation in the air surrounding him. Also the man's stance, previously half-hidden behind the counter, is most assuredly that of an ex-soldier. Yet he sounds English ... the English haven't been in any wars recently unless you count the odd communist attending the Spanish Civil War. That flare in his eyes ... it does remind her of some of the more fanatical communists she's seen who've been about to meet an important figure, like Stalin himself. But why? Who is he going to meet?
Parker, can't get a bead on the bartender, though that's pretty normal. http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4664809/
Schiller's attention is briefly drawn to the two figures,Parker seems quite unnerved about something though perhaps that's just the - http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/4664816/ - flare of fanatical eagerness in that bartender's eye. You don't think the eagerness is directed toward Parker. The bartender is waiting for someone ... someone incredible enough that his eyes light up the way most SS officers would when they were about to meet the Fuhrer. Oddly enough, his stance also reminds you of an SS officer. Militaristic and precise, but he's British, isn't he? Don't they lack the discipline for that kind of stance.
Image
Spoiler:
German in clipped cold and neutral tones, "Ah, Dr. Schiller ... how thrilling to meet another member of the Ahnenerbe. I've read about your work at the Viking settlement at Haithabu, directing excavations, from Herr Himmler himself. He was quite impressed by you. I hear you have a few leads that shall prove that that the Aryans are the ancestors of all Indo-European peoples. An intriguing speculation, to be sure, though I imagine many such groups lack our rarefied bloodlines, hmm? Consider this Slav I have by my side, beautiful, and yet not quite equivalent to what she would be should her blood not be spoiled with Slavic ancestry."
His gaze is entirely on Schiller, a little too unflinchingly, before flicking away at the end to rake Elena with clear and unabashed sexual interest. Then he returns to Schiller, having dismissed her presence for now.
Image
German with a light Russian accent as her big and beautiful gaze catches on Schillers with each word said with poise and power as though she were addressing a cinema from the silver screen,"You're too kind, Doctor Heydrich, to consider me a beauty despite my ancestry."
Image
German in clipped cold and neutral tones,"Forgive me Schiller, may I introduce Fraulein Svetlana Altukhov. I am escorting her to Vienna where she will join one of our film studios. She plays an impressive femme fatale to star opposite one of our Aryan beauties."

German,"Then it is decided," he says, then checks his watch. "It is close to the appointed time for my meeting with her. If you come with me, I will ask if our lady in the private car would like you to join us. You would then have an opportunity to meet with everyone of merit on this train. The Slav can remain here."
The German fellow rises, gives a stiff heel-tapping bow to the lady he was sitting with, and then with a final look at Schiller starts for the door. The beautiful woman with him seems content to remain in her seat.

Jonathan nods curtly and does as asked. "You know, I was truly, truly surprised when those SS men boarded this train," Jonathan says, beaming his best smile. "But not as surprised as I was when I saw that man walk in with such a beautiful lady such as yourself. Excuse me, where are my manners? My name is Jonathan, Jonathan Parker," he extends his hands. "Nice to meet you."

Jonathan withdraws his hand, not breaking his smile. "Well, in life, or just on this train?"

"I jest, I jest," he says, chuckling. "Well, I was thinking of going to Turks. I have never seen Istanbul before in my life-I've heard that it was a sight to behold. Have you lived in Germany for a long time, Miss Altukhov? "

"I have only recently arrived by way of Britain," says Svetlana. "I considered going over to the United States to see my way through Hollywood but I have found most Americans to be terrible bores. She waves her hand airily. "Too loud and too little mystery. I find that in all of Europe it is the Germans who have the most mystery." She gazes at him through lowered lashes, seemingly coy, before reaching for the coffee one of the waitors have brought for her. "Do you have many mysteries, Mr. Parker?"

Jonathan chuckles, seemingly suppressing a laughter. "Oh my, my," he says. "That certainly explains why you chose to work in Germany. Not sure if I agree with that statement, however. Germans can be very simple people, I feel. Nay, I would say my favorite kind of people is my fellow British."

He turns to look at Lily. "We may be the most overbearing, old fashioned, condescending, and rude people who simply assumes that they are more intelligent than anyone else in the world," he turns to look back at Svetlana. "But they indeed have this... Special charm... About them. They are quite a special people indeed. Many of them speak French, for instance, like most of us that travels around much."

Svetlana's smile widens a little to show some bright white even teeth. "I have always found that those who declare themselves nothing special so often have something special about them. As for myself, I am exceedingly special ... utterly unique ... and thus have little to say on the matter." She pauses. "I have been in Germany for the past few months after having been discovered in London by a German director. They say I would make the perfect femme fatale. I am not so sure but perception is key and the audience will forever be the final judge." She pauses just long enough to draw attention from any listening ear before continuing.... "I have made the acquaintance of Herr Heydrich while discussing a possible dramatization of the Aryan reality, so to speak. He insisted on accompanying me as he were already coming through this way. I find that there is no safer place than by a distinguished SS officer's side." Her smile has a hint of dramatic irony, but that might just be to appease the anti-Nazi folks one would likely assume would be present in this carriage.

Jonathan Parker briefly raises an eyebrow at this odd response, puts two and two together, and comes up with nothing in particular as per usual and shrugs his shoulder.

"Well, I have always found that the safest place for a cat from the dogs is to be next to a great wolf," Jonathan says.

"Speaking of which, how is Mr. Heydrich like? Was he onboard the train when he heard the explosions?"

Svetlana looks amused. "He was on the platform when those little explosives went pop-pop-pop. He sent his underling to investigate but they found nothing. Crazier things have happened in the train so far."

"No, I have never been inside the Private Car, although I would like to see who travels within one. Perhaps we will get lucky and he or she will venture forth from the private car before long. Svetlana legitimately looks taken aback. It's the first real emotion she's displayed thus far. All the other ones seemed staged. "I have seen a few speeches, presentations, and even a drill. I'm not privy to any other sort of actions they might undertake during their general duties."

"Ah, shame," Jonathan says, eyes swiftly returning to normal. He almost looks disappointed. "I was hoping for an exciting story of brave law enforcement officials solving crimes and mysteries and chasing down blackguards," Jonathan says. "But I guess such adventures only exist in the world of cinema and not in the real world. You have seen them drill before? I have heard that it was a sight to see."

"Ach, well, so how are Mr. Heydrich... Her Heydrich... err... Mr. Heydrich's underlings like? I wonder why they are moving east on the Orient Express. Perhaps they are on a special mission from the Fuhrer himself?" he chuckles at the unlikely thought. "Now that would be exciting."

Psychology roll,Svetlana seems disturbed as though she had two competing memories and wasn't sure which was true.
Svetlana Altukhov's expression becomes almost normal, slightly perplexed, without the usual silver screen flair. "I did have a dream of it," she admits. "At least I think I dreamed visiting it ... I wouldn't think that I would describe it as though I had been there. I mean, I'd forgotten about that dream until you mentioned it. The Private Car was so strange ... the paintings of an Egyptian landscape besieged ... the statue in the locked cabinet about the size of a torso of a sphinx but it looked ... and then there were words ... she was so beautifully ... she radiated all the elegance and power of an Egyptian priestess ... I could almost see the bejewelled collar and kohl eye liner. Perhaps there was kohl eye liner?" She pauses, seemingly gathering herself together. "How silly of me! Dreams are only dreams."

The bartender opens the door from the direction of the bar car. "Sir, mademoselles, I'm just letting you all know that the bar car is open should any of desire a beverage." He gives a curt bow and returns to the bar car.

And you'll never guess who her escort is: Herr Doktor Konstantin Heydrich of the SS-Ahnenerbe, the younger brother of none other than Reinhard Heydrich. Elena has come to know Wolfgang well by now, and she gives his hand a reassuring squeeze.
Russian,"Thank you," she says. "There has been some other gossip of interest. Those explosions earlier were from explosives used to stop the train as the staff said. But what they didn't say is that three of them have gone missing! Svetlana knew, though, and she told Mr. Parker, who has a fear of bartenders - or at least the one in the Bar Car, who does seem creepy and appears to be waiting for something. I think her escort's presence here is also connected to Schiller, whom you also missed. He has been involved in archaeology, though his area of expertise is Scandinavia and the origin of the Thule rather than Egypt. This may tie in with the books too. Parker is also an odd sort. Earlier he clutched his chest, but he insisted he was fine. It looked like he may have been concealing some small animal that could have bitten him. And he had a dream last night that this train was designed by H.G. Wells or something, and that we were all lost in time forever. Which is odd, since Schiller seems to think we've been on the train for at least a week even though it just departed yesterday. He dreamed of a forest at the bottom of a long staircase, with something in the trees watching him. The movie star told Parker that the Private Car is a sort of roving museum, but when I spoke to her later she denied having seen it. I think she's covering up something, and she's already pretty much said that the Private Car is the reason she's here. Oh, and she knows Charles Gavigan from London too. He had been talking with a British Colonel and other members of the British Union of Fascists."

Lounge Car, Germany, 11:40
Midnight Syndicate

Current occupants include Madamoselle Nico Dubois, Mr. Parker, Elena, Lily Gavigan and Wolfgang.

"Hmm, I don't suppose you're a spy?" Nico asked Parker. "Or a jewel thief or anything salacious? I'd heard...."

The door opens and the Roby family enters. Mr. Roby carries a large luggage case in hand. "Are we ready for the puppet show?" he asks broadly as he heads on down the aisle and toward the bar car. "Follow us if you are so inclined."

Elena speaks to Wolfgang in Russian, still watching Jonathan for a reaction.
Russian,"Do you think you're up to watching the puppet show?" asks Elena. "It's likely to be disturbing. The flyers for it alone had quite an effect. Oh, and be careful what you say around the actress, Svetlana. She likely understands Russian, and she is chummy with the fascists."

Khan ignores all pleasantries as he tears into the room, realising he has no idea what his target looks like. He decides quickly to continue ignoring polite society to "jovially" yell, "Mr. Parker, where are you!?"

Wolfgang nods, acknowledging Elena's words, and then smiles apologetically at the rest of the company.

"You must forgiving me, I still sleeping. Please, I was not realise I speaking Russian. But I would loving to join to see the puppet show, yes. "

He looks up at the drunk man as he barges in and then seemingly turns his attention back to the rest of his company.

Parker's head snaps up at the shouting man and he half rises from his chair, one hand extended for a hand shake almost before he knows what he was doing. Then it's like some sort of script clicks into gear and he will finish the handshake and gesture the man into the seat opposite him. "I'm sorry? I don't believe I've had the pleasure?"

OOC: Sorry, my depression acted up over the last few months. Seasonal thing, I think. Feeling slightly better now.

IC: Parker seems to have dozed off to sleep mid conversation and looks confused rather confused. "What time is it? What did I miss?"

OOC:   No problem, my depression kept me from posting for quite awhile too
"Mr Parker! We need to talk, urgently and privately. A friend of yours is both thoroughly creepy and quite convincing." Khan lumbers with great haste to Mr Parker's location and begins trying to get him up out of his seat and get moving. His unwashed and sweaty fingers likely feel rather unpleasant

German,"I can guarantee you, my friend, that trying to make conversation with a dictionary is about as frustrating as doing it without one. However, if you'd be willing, I would offer my services as an interpreter. Nothing like the anonymity of strangers on a train, right?"
He then turns to Elena and Jonathan and in less than perfect English corrects:

"I don't thinking that is vhat his meaning. He say Roby telling him to see you to talk vith you, yes, not to collecting you to bring to Roby."

He grins sheepishly.

The erratic German looks between the two of his new "companions" trying to determine if either is trustworthy. After a moment, he decides that time is somewhat short and worriedly nods.

An Italian couple talking quietly in Italian and an American couple speaking in American accents - well the husbands speaks firmly and the wife makes noncommittal sounds - enter the Lounge Car corridor on the way to the Bar Car. The American clears his throat at the blockage in the corridor, indicating that the Germans standing together should separate from the centre aisle and let them pass.

Khan takes a seat and attempts to relax.
German,...I need some tea...
German,I sincerely apologise for my behaviour. Please, give me a moment to collect my composure.

German:,A Khan and a writer?
Wolfgang smiles again.
German,The great Genghis wouldn't be entirely amused, I would reckon. I taught Literature at the University of Munich, but that was before the naz... Anyway, I've just gotten back from Spain and am travelling through Europe. I don't know Mr. Roby very well, I've only met him yesterday, but he seems to have a penchant for the occult and mystical.

German,No, I'm afraid no relation to the conqueror. Parents were a fan, wanted me to go out and conquer my life you might say.
Khan smiles with nostalgia, before returning to his serious manner.
German,The occult, you say? Possible implications are unpleasant... fine then, tell me all you may politely detail I'm public. I do not wish yo sound paranoid, but... I fear him. No man should know a stranger so well unless they had reason- rarely of anything but mal intent

German,"I am afraid there is little more to say, as I said, I only made his acquaintance yesterday. He is here with his wife and children. I believe they are to start a puppet show any moment now in the next carriage. Perhaps we should repair there and then you may see with your own eyes?"
