There is also a separate sleeping cabin with an upper and lower bed and a little more storage space with an additional luggage rack with another suitcase on top. The beds aren't terribly wide but which has expensive cotton sheets freshly pressed and a roll-like pillow. There is, naturally, a button that will summon the Cabin Steward as well as an emergency brake pull with a warning beneath that threatens an expensive fine if you are to pull it without good reason. There isn't much room in this compartment, especially with any hand luggage brought onboard, but it is beautiful. The room is somewhat larger than the Single Cabins through the absence of your own personal vanity but not by much.

Both of these rooms are connected by your own personal washroom that contains a sink beneath a mirror and it provides both hot and cold water, as well as containing a little cupboard underneath that provides a glimpse at the porcelain pipes as well as access to additional storage space. There is a luxurious towel hanging on the golden bar beneath the sink. There is a cupboard on the other side that contains necessary toiletries. The doors can be locked or unlocked on either side. Both are currently locked (unless you enter, in which case your side is currently unlocked).
The first room wardrobe contains,a men's and ladies hat box which contain hats and a puzzle-locked box with odd engravings.
Suitcase #1 in the first room contains,Dresses, beneath the dresses is a battered copy of The Well of Loneliness, Toiletries and A few collections of Dickinson poems
Suitcase #2 in the first room contains, men's clothing, shaving kit, and a small wooden box containing several gold coins inserted into a blue velvet backing.

Lily skips into the compartment's first room and finally allows herself to look up, taking a second to straighten her hat. She falls back onto the sofa and dumps her sketchbook, pencils, and purse on the far end. "Our things are here," she says to Charles, restless fingers already fidgeting.

Charles shivers as his cold body is embraced by the warmth coming from the train's heaters. It's nice and warm in here. Almost toasty in comparison to what it was like out there. "Can I trust you to have this room and sleep on the banquette or will I need to lay out here like a guard dog while you sleep on the bunks?"

"Of course you can trust me!" Lily sits up and pouts at him. "I wouldn't dream of inviting trouble, and I don't need a guard dog. I can't imagine what I'd need guarding from." She chuckles strangely, now smirking as she stands.

The smirk disappears. Lily folds her arms and raises an eyebrow at him. "We've been by ourselves for a while, you know. I'm not the same girl I was when Mother was still around. I can be respectable if you can."

Charles smiles and forcibly takes her hand, lightly kissing the back of it. "Ah, my spirited little sister.... Very well. Let us adjourn to the Smoking Car and indulge in a few alcoholic beveriges. In celebration of your twenty first birthday tomorrow I will allow you to drink what you will though be mindful that you may suffer a hangover in the morning. I have a little gift for you tomorrow as well. Are you excited?"
OOC,I though I would go with the birthday situation from the last incarnation and as she's already twenty that would make tomorrow her twenty first birthday. I can scrap it if you don't like it.

Lily nods vigorously, brightening up with a wide, pleasant smile. "Of course I am! Everything is exciting." She moves for the compartment door, tugging her brother's hand, then stops short and pulls her hat down over her eyes again. "Maybe you should guide me there? I don't want to catch a glimpse of any awful flyers."

The carriage seems to rattle around, only emphasizing the silent contempt of the passengers. She is aware, naturally, that her brother would be having a good time and here she is ... divorcing herself from everyone else with not even her brother to blame.

Lily spends a few moments weeping quietly and feeling sorry for herself, but eventually the desire to sit around and do nothing disappears. As the tears dry on her face, she considers going back out to the rest of the train, but decides she doesn't feel up to it just now. She picks The Royal Shade of Pale up off the floor, stands up, and gently sets it on the room's table. Then she takes her purse and heads to the compartment's washroom to wash her face and reapply her makeup.

Lily turns her head this way and that and makes faces at herself in the mirror, eventually making a judgment of "good enough." She heads back out to the room with the banquette, considers the door for a second, then shakes her head and sets her purse down next to The Royal Shade of Pale.

She takes the book and reclines on the banquette, intending to properly read at least a few pages.

In a Dark Time
By Theodore Roethke 1908–1963 Theodore Roethke
In a dark time, the eye begins to see,
I meet my shadow in the deepening shade;
I hear my echo in the echoing wood—
A lord of nature weeping to a tree.
I live between the heron and the wren,
Beasts of the hill and serpents of the den.

What’s madness but nobility of soul
At odds with circumstance? The day’s on fire!
I know the purity of pure despair,
My shadow pinned against a sweating wall.
That place among the rocks—is it a cave,
Or winding path? The edge is what I have.

A steady storm of correspondences!
A night flowing with birds, a ragged moon,
And in broad day the midnight come again!
A man goes far to find out what he is—
Death of the self in a long, tearless night,
All natural shapes blazing unnatural light.

Dark, dark my light, and darker my desire.
My soul, like some heat-maddened summer fly,
Keeps buzzing at the sill. Which I is I?
A fallen man, I climb out of my fear.
The mind enters itself, and God the mind,
And one is One, free in the tearing wind.

The City
Edward Roby

It was golden and splendid,
That City of light;
A vision suspended
In deeps of the night;
A region of wonder and glory, whose temples were marble and white.

I remember the season
It dawn'd on my gaze;
The mad time of unreason,
The brain-numbing days
When Winter, white-sheeted and ghastly, stalks onward to torture and craze.

More lovely than Zion
It shone in the sky
When the beams of Orion
Beclouded my eye,
Bringing sleep that was filled with dim mem'ries of moments obscure and gone by.

Its mansions were stately,
With carvings made fair,
Each rising sedately
On terraces rare,
And the gardens were fragrant and bright with strange miracles blossoming there.

The avenues lur'd me
With vistas sublime;
Tall arches assur'd me
That once on a time
I had wander'd in rapture beneath them, and bask'd in the Halcyon clime.

On the plazas were standing
A sculptur'd array;
Long bearded, commanding,
rave men in their day—
But one stood dismantled and broken, its bearded face battered away.

In that city effulgent
No mortal I saw,
But my fancy, indulgent
To memory's law,
Linger'd long on the forms in the plazas, and eyed their stone features with
awe.

I fann'd the faint ember
That glow'd in my mind,
And strove to remember
The aeons behind;
To rove thro' infinity freely, and visit the past unconfin'd.

Then the horrible warning
Upon my soul sped
Like the ominous morning
That rises in red,
And in panic I flew from the knowledge of terrors forgotten and dead.

Perhaps it is some effect of seeing the bizarre flyers, or just a sudden stroke of inspiration, but Lily grabs for her sketchbook and a pencil. She is not a poet by any means, and her structure is shaky at best:

deep in the fog i lay dreaming
wandering lost in the mist that swallows screaming
children of mothers who cry for their daughters
in this place, this life all life slaughters

and i looked into the mirror and i found myself on the other side
escorted by fallen angels and the souls of men who've died
over and over as they fight and they cry
out for salvation as the years pass them by

and they cut into my life and they took all that they could
my body bears the scar of waiting longer than one should
for three days and three nights i dreamed that i was free
but in the dream it was merely hours for me

"Well," whispers Lily, speaking to the empty air of the compartment, "I think it's time I stopped dwelling. If only I could paint on this godforsaken train; idle hands are the Devil's playthings..." She snaps both books shut, places them on the table, retrieves her purse, and turns to the compartment door.

And doesn't open it.

Lily remembers a little songbird she received when she was little. Her brother, to prove a point, spoke to her at length about how the bird was trapped inside it because people loved to watch pretty things sing but that it knew the world out there was too scary for it and so it wouldn't escape even if it got the chance. He then opened the cage door and, sure enough, the bird refused to fly. This was the world it knew. This what all that existed to it. It couldn't even fathom freedom.

Lily slides the card back in her purse, which she sets gently beside her. "I've heard things about the Orient Express today--please tell me they're not true. I heard there are people suffering from some strange condition, where they suddenly stop moving or speaking, and nothing so far has helped them. I heard about spies aboard, and about the flyers doing ghastly things to people, and, and..."

She gets up and throws her arms around Charles. She looks more like a doll than ever, with her huge eyes and small mouth, and the effect would probably unsettle anyone but him. "What will they do to me? What am I going to do without you to protect me? Please tell me these arrangements you've made, I fear I won't sleep at all tonight."

"On the other hand, there is the bartender who is also a part of my circle of friends who would doggedly assist you in any way you require." He pauses. "However ... I, personally, doubt any harm would come to me. My friend in the Private Car is an ongoing concern who might choose to kill me but other than this there would be no one who could kill me." He runs his hands through her hair, breathing deeply. "You, my dear, are absolutely safe ... as am I. I have ... protections that would undo any who tried against my life."

Lily's sleep is disturbed by the slowing of the train as it enters a train station followed by the sound of a person softly knocking at her compartment door. Something about the sound starts her from her sleep and she can't help but remember various tales of ghost dogs and other monsters scratching at the door of their victims, begging to be let in so that they might well destroy the sleeper.

There seems to be something scorched into the wall. Writing of some kind. It looks very small. She'd probably need a magnifying glass to read it. Lily feels very tired, like she hasn't slept much at all, but there's dawning light coming in through the curtained windows so she must have gotten a decent amount of sleep before being interrupted.

Charles attempts to soothe the already calm Lily by explaining that he has plenty of friends among the Germans' Nazi Party, including the archaeologist fellow he was speaking to at the bar and the mysterious lady in the Private Car has just as many friends. He explains that he has arranged for them to have morning tea together at nine o'clock sharp and that it should be a lovely affair. It's about time that his dear sister started to meet people and get involved in the world. He's been too protective for too long due to her obvious fragility of heart and his own desires to please his father who had an obvious paternal preference for his exceedingly vulnerable daughter. Charles assures her that he was in no way jealous as he had known that he would be the one to replace his father should anything ever happen to him, which it did, but that he felt that he was honour bound to ensure that she was safe and rested before viewing the trials ahead but now that she were a little stronger he would show her certain things, piecemeal, and that if she were very good she could go traveling with him and perhaps even help him in certain key endeavours.

Lily listens to him passively, occasionally nodding and agreeing that yes, morning tea sounds wonderful, and of course her dear brother only wants what is best, and why, how exciting all this talk of getting involved is. She tells Charles that naturally, she is going to have to get ready for the morning; it wouldn't be at all proper for her to show up in her nightdress with her hair undone, would it? No, of course not. She returns to her room singing under her breath:

"Rose, Rose, Rose red,
Shall I ever see thee wed?
I will marry at thy will, Sire,
At thy will...

Nothing seems to interrupt her dressing as Charles seems content to return to his room to do whatever private things she is not allowed to know - as she knows she must not disturb him while he has his door locked. The train starts moving again, which is nice, though the train travel itself is likely delayed significantly. If she wants to make the most of this journey she's going to have to start early, it seems.

Lily chooses to wear something feminine and respectable, though she isn't sure anything in her wardrobe will be in fashion. The dark and severe colors she wears around the house aren't very good at fading into the background (as she knows she should). Oh well. Might as well make an impression on her dear brother's friends. Maybe they'll be expecting an eccentric woman anyway.

She heads into the washroom to do up her hair and attempt to make herself look less tired. She didn't think sleeping away from home would be so difficult, and yet...

Lily blinks, visibly startled, and touches her mouth with her fingertips. She takes a breath and places her palms flat against the mirror, staring into her reflection's eyes. Centering herself, she attempts to reach out with her consciousness, seeking whatever it was that glanced past her. As far as she is aware, her unusual sight doesn't extend past object-reading... but surely it can't hurt to try. Surely.

A female voice whispers in her ear (her own?) and she finds her consciousness moving through the window into the other compartment where a beautiful woman with matted auburn hair drags and strips a conductor of his uniform in the Water Closet (the toilet room with its beautiful mosaic tiles). Lily gets an awkward glance of her nudity, ample breasts, perfect curves (if a little dirt smeared) though the sight of her bloody mouth, tendrils of flesh caught between otherwise perfect teeth, leaves her a little aghast. Then the woman is dressed as the conductor, jots down a note to leave on the conductor's chest, checks herself in the mirror, and heads out. The conductor appears unconscious but breathing and isn't bound at all. 0/2 SAN.

Charles exits his room wearing a dapper suit with his hair slicked back with brilliantine. He checks his wristwatch with a slight frown and a tut of tongue against teeth. "It appears we'll be far too early to meet with her but I'll never get back to sleep now." His gaze flicks up and he takes in her appearance with a smile that seems a little too eager. "Regrettably we're also a little too awake a little too early for breakfast. We may need to have someone rouse the kitchen staff.... Now to dine in our room or in the lounge car? Which would you prefer, dear sister?" He goes over to press the buzzer by the door.....

The door opens and a familiar fellow stands in the doorway dressed in a conductor's uniform. "Ah, good morning," he says with a Russian accent and a twinkle in his eye. "Very sorry about this but the conductor had a nasty spell and fainted. For fear of the train being delayed by the German Administration any further than those fireworks have done so, I thought I would step into the uniform and get things going." His gaze drops to Lily's quivering form and he looks troubled for a moment before returning his gaze to Charles with a rather chipper air. "I've sent a lord's son off on errands to get the SS officer who recently boarded some apple juice. Perhaps I could have him fetch something for either of you as well?"
Image
"We should like our breakfast delivered to us shortly," says Charles with perfect politeness. "Though I would imagine that we can wait should it prove too difficult for you. I do hope the conductor feels better shortly ... I should hate to think anything untoward were occurring on this train."

"I should tell you if I knew anything." The Russian nodded, more to himself than to anyone else.
Image
"Before you go, if you could ask the conductor as to who the late night caller was who visited my sister while I slept I would be much obliged."

The Russian looks thoughtful. "Of course."

Unless Lily makes some kind of response, the fellow leaves.

He looks at the picture and although his face doesn't twitch, it remains carefully neutral, he literally goes grey - not in a supernatural manner but in the way that so many novelists have captured throughout the years. You didn't think it possible, but there it is. That and his pupils constrict greatly - again, not in an inhuman manner, just in a frightened way. Then his gaze flicks up to meet hers and he tightens his jaw.

There is a sketchbook sitting on the side table with a series of guide lines drawn on it and the more detailed impression of a female figure (naked or perhaps her clothes haven't been drawn on yet?) in what appears to be the water closet of the sleeping car and whose hands seem to be gripping a conductor's uniform which she has stripped off a man lying on the tiles. The main focus of the drawing seems to be the twisted bits of flesh between her teeth and some basic background details.

"Good morning, sir," says Lily, nodding politely. She doesn't smile back, just watches him. "Yes, everything is all right. Are you here to see my brother? I'm sure he'll be out any minute now."

"Ah, no. Actually I came to see you. To um... to apologise for startling you last night. For starters." He smiles hopefully and steps further into the compartment and espies the sketch book. "By Jove, that's rather good!" He looks closer and realises the disturbing subject matter. "Oh! Rather dark though. Was this after I met you last night? Did it give you nightmares, seeing the attendant unconscious?" He gives Lily a sharp look, readjusting his impressions of her as not quite just an attractive young lady. "Or are you of The Modern School of Art? May i have a look?" Without waiting for an answer, he flicks through the rest of the sketch book to see if it is Lily's normal style or just something caused by last night.

Lily raises an eyebrow at his answer, visibly surprised. "Oh? Oh, well, he does want to speak to you. As I said, I'm sure he--" She cuts herself off when she sees Cecil looking at her sketchbook, and goes pale (well, paler than usual) when he starts going through it. "I'd rather you didn't-- ...suppose if you want to, sir. Really, I'm a painter, those are only sketches-- yes, yes, it did give me an awful fright. I swear I don't usually... well."

The other pages in the sketchbook confirm that this isn't that out of the ordinary for her; there are still-lifes of flowers and self-portraits here and there, but also drawings of (sleeping or dead?) women with bloody bite marks on their necks, several sketches of a looming, powerfully built figure, and a page of what appears to be sketches of an oddly proportioned cat.

The lights flicker on and then off again overhead (it's getting gloomy outside so it's more noticeable than it otherwise would be) and a weird static charge seems to sift through the air, lifting hairs on end and sending little electric shivers down their spine. For a moment, it almost seems as though one of the drawings writhes on the page.

"Do you read much of Stoker's work or James?" Cecil considers the nightmarish sketches. Lily is definitely not ordinary. As the lights flicker, Cecil squints hard as the weird cat writhes and turns to look at him. "By Jove! It's happening again!" Cecil tears his eyes from the page and tries to focus on Lily to see if she is affected by the abnormal atmosphere.

Lily squirms uncomfortably on the banquette, blinking up at the lights, brushing a hand through her hair. "Yes, sir, I've at least read Dracula," she says, glancing at him before looking all about the compartment. "Did this happen last night? I... I don't know if I like this train much. Strange things keep happening."

"You're right there; this is a singularly unpleasant train and strange things keep happening. I feel like I'm going bonkers half the time; I see things that aren't there or that other people can't see. I've seen some nasty stuff too you know, a bit like these." He indicates the sketches. "And then the lights go weird or, or we almost seem to be somewhere else. At least, that's what happened last night when I looked out of the window. We were travelling through countryside where these things (sketches) would be right at home. Something that Dante would come up with." He shudders.

Lily smiles thinly at her sketchbook and the drawings of the strange cat, lowering her voice to a soft near-whisper. "I hope I haven't unsettled you too badly, Lord Linscott. My brother won't be very happy with me if I have."

She blinks at Cecil then, and cocks her head to one side. "Seeing things others can't? That's... fascinating, if I may say so. Only on this train?"

"Yes, only on this train. And there's something devilish going down, I can tell you." Cecil rubs his brow. "Have you seen oddities too, Miss er,may I call you Lily? I don't think I have the pleasure of your brothers acquaintance and yet you say he wishes to meet me. What does he do? In a day-by-day capacity that is? If you do get into trouble for disturbing me, it won't be caused by the scary doodles I can assure you."

Lily looks away and brushes some nonexistent lint off the skirt of her dress. "I... wouldn't say I have, no. It's just interesting that you see things." She shrugs. "As for my brother, Charles is... a secretive man. I haven't been allowed to know what he does, but I know he has plenty of friends aboard."

She furrows her brow and twists her mouth into a strange frown, speaking once again in a hushed tone. "He wants to speak to you about last night. ...About me."

Germany, 09:25

Their conversation is interrupted by a further conversation in the hall as one of the compartment doors opens.

"Hmm, this train appears to have bypassed Ulm," says an unfamiliar woman's voice in a warm and velvety voice that couples a high class British and Russian accent.

"Regrettably so, but this train does need to catch up on lost time," says Kliment.

"You were not the conductor when I first arrived," says the lady.

Kliment's smile can be heard through his words. "The initial conductor is feeling rather poorly so it fell to me to step into his place. He should soon be well enough to assist."

A pause as a door opens.
Unfamiliar German male voice,"Good evening, fraulein. I hope you have found the breakfast to your liking."
Previous woman's voice in German,"Of course, Dr. Heydrich. The cuisine aboard this train is superb."
German man with a hopeful tone,"I hope you might share a cigarette with me in the Smoking Car."
Female voice in German with a carefully neutral tone,"I do not share, Dr. Heydrich, but I am willing to accompany you."
You would at least be able to pick up that the woman refers to the German as "Doktor Heydrich". Their footsteps carry on down the corridor. Though either of the two inside the compartment could peek out to catch a look at them (refer to the corridor post for pictures), neither of them can leave the compartment without Charles Gavigan stepping out of the other room to interrupt them.

"Good morning, Lord Linscott, I trust you slept well," said Mr. Gavigan, extending his hand with a wry smile on his lips.

Cecil frowns gently at Lily's comment and is about to reply when he catches a glimpse of the German woman's dress as she whisks past. He opens his moth to continue when he is interrupted by Mr. Gavigan entering. Unaccountably, he feels the hairs on the back of his neck prickle but he steels himself and shakes Lily's brother's hand. "Moderately so, moderately so, thank you; lulled by the music of the rumbling wheels as it were." He casts a look at Lily as he tells the fib. "And you, sir, a blissful sleep or were you enjoined to partake in the fine entertainments the Orient has to offer?"

Lily seems very interested in the conversation outside, at least until the other man comes along and they start speaking in German. She jumps slightly when Charles enters the room, straightens her back, and almost cringes when Cecil looks at her.

"Has anyone mentioned how brilliant your use of the English language really is?" asked Mr. Gavigan. "You are positively skilled with general verbal rhythms. Perhaps you could assist me with a little something? I have recently acquired an intriguing idol that has a riddle attached at it's base. Perhaps you could assist me with its meaning?" He looks to Lily. "Could you please go out and fetch us both a cup of tea? There's a good girl."

Lily sighs quietly, her shoulders drooping before she stands up and nods at her brother. "Of course, sir." She turns and heads out of the compartment, shutting the door behind her.

Cecil is rather surprised and slightly disappointed that such a characterful and self possessed woman would bend so meekly to her brother's whim. He wonders if they are putting on some sort of show just for him but he can't think why. He bows slightly as Lily departs."Earl Grey with a slice of the arcane." he murmurs and then turns to Charles, "Drat, I knew that infernal classical education would be my undoing one of these bright days!" He says jovially, hiding his true thoughts. "Well, with any luck I shall be utterly confounded by the puzzle and thus maintain a fashionable facade of ignorance. Is this idol historical or merely hysterical?"

"I think you'll find it thoroughly entertaining," said Mr. Gavigan. He withdraws from his pocket the idol - rather an amulet - of disturbing proportions that seems to hearken to some terrible prehistory. He passes it to Cecil, revealing a phonetic inscription on the back that seems - for some strange reason - to be rather new. "It has a phonetic inscription on the back. If you would be so kind as to read it? Perhaps that might shed some light on the situation?"

عن الحب هو بداية و نهاية كل شيء ، كما أ
أتعهد نفسي.

Cecil can't quite comprehend what it says, likely due to the shock of the amulet's disturbing aspect and because his understanding of written Arabic was never very good. He also can't quite place it's anthropological origins. His shocked mind does, however, manage to correlate its unusual and mythic design which brings to mind tales of Trickster Gods and Ancient Prophets worshipped in the dark and chaotic places of the world.

Cecil attempts to hide a shudder and his distaste as he studies the amulet closely. It shakes him up rather badly and he can't concentrate enough to read the words. "Some sort of over-beardly eastern warrior? The inscription is not original I'd say; the metal is far too shiny." He shakes his head. "Is it in Arabic? I'm sorry, my Arabic is pretty non existant. But may I borrow it for an hour? I know someone who can solve it in a jiffy. I can meet you back on the breakfast car if you like."

Charles is left alone in the compartment. He smiles privately to himself and picks up a local newspaper.
