'Nono' (kabukiman)

War of the Dead is a campaign that takes your character from the first stages of the zombie outbreak and into a world forever changed. The normal rules of society, law, order, and decency are out the window. Gone.
Forget about them. Luxury isn’t a good movie, a new video game, or finally affording that dream home. It’s being able to fall asleep at night, managing to wake up the next morning, and having survived another day without becoming a Living Dead. It’s being able to find food enough to keep you moving throughout the day, or something to burn to keep warm when the nights get cold. Welcome to the war for survival . . . the War of the Dead.

'When there is no more room in hell' (Week 1; Act 0.1)

Leonor (“Nono”) Vasconcelos Montalegre

As you put what little possessions you have in the back of the taxi, you reflect on your good fortune in the last few days. Not long ago you were almost down and out, worried where your next meal and bed was coming from, now you are taking a taxi to the airport ready to begin the flight home.

Sure the sudden influenza epidemic was worrying it had even broken out in Lisbon, but it wasn’t going to stop you getting home to Portugal.

The taxi’s radio seemed to be listing areas of the city as best avoided, something about violet gangs and rioting, but the details being relayed by the dispatcher seems a little vague and many of the areas mentioned mean nothing to you.

“Uh do you want me to put that case in the trunk?” the driver was indicating the intricately painted laminate case that housed your prize competition Kendo equipment

“No thank you, I’ll take it in the cab with me” you reply in a voice that reveals how anxious you are to get to the airport.

“Okay” he says as he closes your door before opening his and sliding behind the wheel. He coughs, notices the look flash across your face, “Don’t worry it’s too many cigarettes not the flu”
He starts the taxis engine and slips into the traffic…

For the next five or so minutes, the journey had been relatively uneventful, sure the traffic seemed heavier and faster than usual accompanied by blaring horns and flashing headlights, and there seemed a large number of police cars, lights flashing and sirens screaming, mostly heading for the centre.

Yet despite the heavier traffic flow, or because of it, you are making good time, you should be at the airport with time to spare. Enoying the journey you look out the side window noting the look of panic on many of the faces in cars speeding in the opposite direction, and that’s when it happens.

As you reach the intersection a beat up looking, red pick up with music blaring too loud from speakers mounted on its roof. Swerves to miss a pedestrian and sideswipes your cab, sending it spinning to a halt, the pick up carries on until stopped by a telegraph pole.

For several moments shock renders you helpless then the situation reasserts itself. In the front of the cab the driver slumps over the steering wheel, odd gurgling noises indicating that he lives. Your leg hurts but seems uninjured. From the broken telegraph pole exposed cables spark and jump showing the presence of electricity.

You try to open the cab door, but realise that you probably need to release the lock from the front, you get ready to shout for help when you see a group of oddly moving pedestrians slowly, some with what looks a drunken shuffling, move towards your stricken cab…

Nono gets anxious: with the city getting wild, she doesn't want to think what a bunch of drunken people would do to her... She immediatly shouts:
-Could anyone help me please? I'm stuck in here!
Anyway, she try to discover the lock to be able to open the door.

Nono.
The doors don't budge they must be dead locked from the dashboard. From the steam that is escaping from blow the hood you guess that the crash has busted something important and the drivers side front panel looks ripped and torn above the front wheel. The widscreen is smashed as is the drivers side window, you guess this cab has had its day.

As you watch the driver of the pick up climbs from his vehicle and looks towards your cab, but your not sure if he's looking at you or the crowd that is steadily moving towards you from the sidewalk. From the little you can see of his face he does not look in the best of moods. You can't tell what he has in his hand, but it is most definately something.

Your attention is abruptly drawn to the front of the cab as the driver groans loudly and slowly raises his head from the steering wheel, "What the hell happened?"

-We just had an accident. And a group of drunk people is coming in this direction, let's get out of here!
She gets her bokken.

OOC: Is there any broken window that she can escape?

OOC:   Nono, The side window to your left is cracked, and you think with a small effort may be broken permitting you to wriggle through onto the road facing the red pick up.

OOC: Is the driver doing anything to open the door? Can she actually open the window manually? If not, she will use the bokken to "open" it.

The driver groggily flicks a switch on his dashboard, there is a dull click from the back doors, "The lock is off you should be able to open it now"

To your right you can see the closest of the 'drunks' has almost reached the taxi, and it will not be many seconds before the rest of the group arrive. To your eyes there is something 'wrong' about them, something more than drunk although they move like their the worse for drink there is something else, something that frightens you and makes the short hairs on the back of your neck rise.

From the front the driver turns towards the approaching 'helper', "It's my leg I think its caught beneath the wheel". There is no answer from the drunk, at least no answer you recognise as human, just a series of low moans that seem quickly caught up by the larger group.
OOC:   You need to roll Guts now so thats a d4 and a d6 TN 4 either dice must roll 4 or higher. If you fail you may reroll by spending a benny, you have 3 but the reroll supercedes the previous roll so it could be worse, you choose. Remember you need to roll a 5 or higher on your dice to avoid the consequences of fear.

Nono opens the door as quick as she can and with her bag in one hand and the bokken ready to use as a stick to push away the drunk coming, she runs from there.
-You better run or barricade yourself, this people doesn't seem well- she says to the driver as a warning.

So close to go to home, and I had to get an accident with a drunk person! Life really hates me!

OOC:   Okay, still not sure if you've got this, the d4 is for Guts you roll this to record a number between 1 and 4. The d6 is a separate roll called a 'Wild Dice' and generates a number between 1 and 6. The 'Wild Dice' is only available to characters and important NPCs it makes you better than average. As such both dice should be rolled independant of the other and the results recorded independantly, So d4 = 1, D6 =6, so with the d4 you failed, but the d6 passed the test so you are okay. In the case of a maximum roll on either dice you roll that dice again and add it to that dies earlier roll, so in the case of your d6 you roll again and add that number to your 6. In this case its not important, you passed the test, but in combat it can become so, for obvious reasons.

OOC:   Nothing, the number that you rolled on the second d6 simply adds to the first. You rolled a 2 so your total roll would have been 8 (6+2). The add would have had more importance in combat as it would have increased your hit chances, However having said that, there will be other uses of skills, including a harder Guts roll, when the higher your final number the better. Don't worry you'll get the hang of it :)

Pushing open the door to your left and exiting the cab places the cab between you and the closest drunk Who even as you turn to look at him reaches the cab and bends to the driver.

"Yeah just pull the door open Pal, and then I'll try sliding free" says the driver in an unconcerned manner, but something tells you this is not going to end well.

With an almost animalistic snarl the drunk, although now you can see he's not suffering from too much drink rather from loss of blood if the steady drip of life fluid from a ragged tear in his shoulder is anything to go by, reaches into the cab through the smashed side window and begins to pull at the trapped driver.
"Jesus Christ! what the.." the sentence ends in a terrible scream.

Within seconds the rest of the pack arrive and begin to help the first drag the screaming driver free of the vehicle...
OOC:   In the abscence of Mr. Pear please continue without him for the time being.

OOC:   To get to the drivers attackers you have to go around the car. There are a lot of them you have counted maybe thirty or more. You are alone in the road, the only other person there is the driver of the red pick up that hit your cab and he seems to be frozen into inaction at the present.
I had to cahange the font colour for your thoughts as the one you had used was almost unreadable on my screen.

Nono:

You cannot believe the stupidity of some people. The driver from the red pick up was simply standing watching as the driver of the cab is literally being torn from the inside. You don’t know why these people are doing this, but hey this is America after all.

Further behind the man, at the entrance to an alleyway between two buildings, a young boy also stands and watches. What is wrong with these people, You shout in Portuguese without thinking as you run towards the driver of the pick up truck…

The young lad shouts a warning about explosions and as you run you notice the spreading pool of liquid from the pick up has almost reached the snaking electricity cable. With a jolt you realise that if you continue on your present path you are heading straight for the danger zone.

The shouting seems to have penetrated the fog that seemed to be dulling the pick up drivers wits, and with a curse he turns and sprints towards the nearest doorway.

Behind you the screaming has stopped the only sound now seems to be a low moaning and an occasional snarl. You want to look back but are afraid too.

From your left hand side a thick line of awkwardly moving people are heading towards you. The only available option is to run to your right and take the road towards the City Centre that the lad is now moving down.
Image
Suddenly there is a flash of igniting fuel and everything seems to go into slow motion...
OOC:   Please roll Agility to avoid the resulting explosion. So that's a d8 roll and a d6 roll (wild dice) roll them seperately you need a 4 on either dice or better to avoid taking damage. Don't forget maximums roll again and add.
OOC:   I have separated you and Mr. Pear, since he is abroad and may not be able to join us

Nono feels grateful to the boy for the warning and as soon as the place explodes, she hit the ground to avoid the blast, but keeping her bokken (and thanking God to have the bag in her backs). As soon as she recover, she will resume running to the boy.

You pick yoursef up ears ringing from the explosion, air filled with the smell of burning rubber, and risk a quick glance behind you.
What you see is not good. The road behind you is littered with the casualties from the explosion. Yet as you watch momentarily paralysed by fascination, most of the crowd who had been hit by the pick up trucks fuel exploding slowly dragged themselves to their feet, despite many of them now bearing graphic evidence of wounds that no living person should be able to carry and still function. More than one smoulders from contact with burning fuel, and one is bathed in flame making him appear as a living candle as he gropes his way forward.

Those who cannot stand due to the loss of limb in the explosion, drag themselves forward with it seems one purpose, you and the boy who now waits for you.
