New UNIT Scientific Advisor Dr. Valerie Kirby has mysteriously disappeared during routine inquiries in Dunwich, and a team from UNIT has been hastily assembled to go to Dunwich in order to find her and bring her back. Meanwhile, Story and his companions materialize in Dunwich and begin to explore.
Tobias grimaces, "Must have been something pretty violent, the door was wrenched off its hinges. I can't believe the receptionist doesn't know more about it - I wonder what she isn't telling."
"Will do." Tobias gets up, goes over to the dresser and neatens his hair in the mirror. "And he switches on the American charm." He grimaces at Leonek, "See you in a bit." and heads downstairs to the reception. He looks around to see if she is there.
Tobias smiles. "Good evening Miss Howard. You still working? You must clock off at some stage I'm guessing." He rests nonchalantly against the desk and watches her while she works.
"Evening?" said Annie, confused. "It's not even noon yet. Like I said before, I get off at six. Is your room to your satisfaction, sir? Do you need anything?"
ooc,Sorry, thought it was later what with all the goings-on.
"Damn jet-lag, always catching me out, I should have looked." Tobias subtly flashes his Rolex. "The rooms are great thanks; the others have settled in nicely. Hey, is my room to be the one that looks like there's been a wild party? Hell, I wish I'd been here for that. Did you go?"
In the meantime, Leonek paces about the room, looking out the window, then stepping back to the door and peeking down the corridor, before repeating the entire procedure again.
"He said we were all cooked but we were all right as long as we did not know it. We were all cooked. The thing was not to recognize it."
"Party?" said Annie, confused, though she looked suitably impressed by Tobias's Rolex. "If you're referring to the room with the damage, I don't know what happened there. Whatever it was, it was at night, when I was off shift. The guest staying there had left by the time I came in the next morning. That room won't be ready until this evening, but the other room I mentioned should be free in the early afternoon. You can have that one."
Leonek could see the large man - if he was a man - still at work at the end of the corridor whenever he peeked out, and the window gave him a view of the three-way intersection between St. James's Street, Monastery Hill, and Beach Road.
"Oh no rush, I'm quite happy to wait for the 'party room.'" Tobias winks. " I'm rather taken with staying there now - if its no trouble for you. I'll pick the keys up at 6pm maybe? Who was the violent guest?"
"Great, I'll come down at six then. Say, is there anywhere worth visiting around here?" Tobias looks sheepish, "I confess I have an interest in the weird and bizarre. We don't get so much over in the states and English villages always have such interesting stories about them. Failing that I might just make do with one of your tea shops!"
"Oh, yes," said Annie, still beaming. "The Dunwich Museum is always worth a visit. It's just a few doors down the street to the left. For food and drink, I recommend our own pub here at the Inn. Lunch will be served shortly. Or you could visit the Flora Café, which is at the end of Beach Road. You can get there by turning right out the door and then left at the intersection. There's also one church left on dry ground, the St. James Church. It's down the street, which has the same name, to the left - all the way at the end. You can still see the ruins of Greyfriars Abbey on Monastery Hill. That's right from the intersection outside."
"Gee, well that will keep me busy this afternoon. You say the only church on high ground, have all the others sunk or something? I'll go drag my friend down to lunch first. Thanks Miss Howard." Tobias smiles warmly and turns to go. "Say, that fella upstairs, the one fixing the door; has he had an unfortunate accident or something - surely he didn't have the misfortune to be born that way?"
"Yes, Dunwich used to be a lot bigger and was famed for its many churches," said Annie. "Over the centuries, coastal erosion caused most of the town to be submerged, including almost all of the churches. The maintenance man? No, he didn't always look like that. I'm sure you're right, it must have been an accident, or maybe a disease. I'm glad I could be of help, sir. Enjoy your stay."
Tobias turned to head upstairs.
