CH1-15 Home Invasion.

Clay drives the van into the quiete leafy surburban street and parks up at the end of a row of cars. He parks the car carefully with the wheels facing out ready to go. He then jumps out pulling on his new fireproof(?) works jacket over the top of the painters overalls. "Its a bit like a movie isn't it" he says to no one in particular. "I'll put the keys on the floor infront of the drivers seat that way anyone who needs them can get them."

Closer to the house it is possible to see there are 2x Toyota 4x4's parked on the driveway one of which is the battered one which you saw outside the shop. The other clay says was parked on the street while he was watching the house. There are lights on in the house but they are all upstairs. There are no external lights on.

"Should we wait until they turn out the lights before we try anything?" asks Liz. "Although, as long as they're on, maybe they'll reveal something." She takes out her camera and uses the zoom function to try to see in through the lighted upstairs windows, adjusting for the light levels.

We can try to sabotage their car tiers somehow. Maybe a quick cut on the side that is not facing the house.

Clay?

A clearly nervous Clay stares at Jacob. "What? You want me to go out there and slash their tyres? Why don't you? then clearly as an afterthought "... Anyway, I thought the plan was to take look around before we did anything. We slash their tyres, then decide to come back another time and they'll know something is up."

OOC: Clay,Remember Clay is the NPC if its risky you guys should be doing it. Clay will follow you into danger, but he's not leading the way.

slashing the tires means they will not follow us in case we flee the house.
Jacob replies.
We are already here so why circle the house and drive back home. If we are going on entry by force we better get over with it.

"Clay is right," says Liz, peering through the camera. "We need to wait until we're sure we're going to go in tonight before we slash their tyres. Hang about, I think I see something."

What Liz saw,Through a chink in the curtain Liz can see the well muscled younger man stripped to the waist and doing bicep curls infront of a mirror. Liz can see that his back has several very intricate tattoos on it.
Plans again,plans
As the group discusses what to do next the light in the master bedroom goes out.

Liz makes sure that the flash is turned off and discreetly snaps a picture of the man. "There's that strong younger chap in that window," she says, "flexing his muscles at the mirror. He's shirtless, and there's tattoos all over his back."
OOC,In which window did I see the man?

Oops, that was the wholepoint of me puttting the plans in that post - he's in the front bedroom, rather than the master bedroom. (bottom left)
While Liz is watching the man stops what he is doing and heads for bed - the light goes off.

"While we waite for everyone to go to sleep shall we head around the back and take a gander there" says Clay
OOC:,Everyone can see a security light by the front entrance. Remember the house shares its right hand wall with another identical building (its a mirror image) although this building has been boarded up and looks empty.

"Yes, sounds like a good idea," says Liz. "We'll have to mind the motion sensors, of course, and see if we can disable them. If Elira is inside, she's got to be in one of the back bedrooms, and I'd bet on the smaller one. The man I saw was in the front bedroom next to the master bedroom, and I'm pretty sure she's not in the master bedroom either."
OOC,Thanks. I'd thought it was probably that one, but I wanted to make sure.

Clay and Liz move off through the overgrown garden next door, and around to the rear, from the cover of a rather poorly kept hedge they get a clear view of the back of the house.

I took a look last time and none of the downstairs windows have security locks and you could put the back door in with a good solid boot. We might even be able to jemmy it, which would be quieter.

OOC: looking at the plans with the front of the house at the bottom they move around to the right, which has them moving through the gardens of the empty house next door.
OOC: You other chaps,I want to move us on, so royya and imp feel free to assume you are with Clay and Liz or simply post intentions.

Liz gets the vague impression of a man sitting on a chair or perhaps on the side of a bed, but as she watches the light in the room goes out, plunging the back garden into darkness.

Clay shifts nervously in the cover of the hedge. "What now then?"
OOC: Darkness,This is London so even the back garden isn't actually that dark. However all manipulation and spot skills are at -25% without some kind of light source.

Liz points up at the window. "There was a man sitting in that room," she whispers. "If Elira's here, she's prolly in the other bedroom. Let's root through their rubbish next and see what we can find."

OOC: Bedroom,Right rear - the nearest to you.
Clay points over to the bins "they're there just to the left of the back door. Problem is they are nearly directly under another security light" Looking at where Clay is pointing its possible to just make out a black shape above the doorway.
Getting to the bins/Security Light,Will require a Sneak roll as the intrepid investigator/s slowly moves along the rear of the house to the doorway while trying to stay out of the security lights detector. Its not clear wether there is a safe spot directly below the light.

OOC,Is that the right side as seen from the front, or the right side as seen from the rear?

"I'd better not try it," says Liz. "I can be a klutz sometimes. Now, if those security lights are hooked up to some sort of computerised security system, I'm your girl. Maybe they have a wi-fi network in this house, and most people don't bother to secure them, making it very easy to gain entry. Even if it is secured, I may be able to crack it."

ooc,Sorry, I was unaware we had a new thread until now. Forgive my absense.
Greg looks toward the house, tryiing to determine if there were any other lights on inside. He whispered, "Looks like they're all going to sleep, which would be very fortunate for us. I still like the idea of killing power to the house, and that would eliminate the security lights as well." The doctor started looking at the wires that fed the house and follow them back to a transformer nearby.

transformer,Sorry Imp but just to be clear are we talking about the grey boxes or drums which typically hang of a large electricity company pole here or something else.
There do not seem to be any power lines visible from the rear of the house.

"We're not giving up," says Liz. "Let me see if I can access and disable those security lights remotely first." She takes out her laptop and scans for wireless networks.

Liz finds half a dozen wireless networks, none of which would indicate they belongs to the house.

OOC,Does this mean that I'm sure that none of the wireless networks are associated with the house, or is that still a possibility? Also, you never said whether the rear window where I saw the man was on the right as viewed from the front of the house or from the back.

OOC: Liz,Liz can't say anything definitive about the WiFi setups she can see appart from none seem to be security related appart from a wifi enabled baby monitor which doesn't seem related. If she wants she can spend the time hacking them individually and checking networks for PC's and looking at web logs etc, but it will take some time. The bedroom is right/rear when looking from the front of the house.
OOC: Transformers,None in sight there may be one somewhere on the street, but its not visible from the rear of the house. NB some (cheaper) burglar alarms are triggered when power is cut.

"We should wait a while for them to fall asleep anyway," whispers Liz. "While we're doing that, I've found six wireless networks nearby. I'm going to look through them and see if any of them are associated with the house. Even if the security lights are inaccessible, I may learn something useful." She begins to penetrate the wireless networks with a talent that is coming easier to her with practice.

"I've gone through most of them." says Liz. "Only two of them are hooked up to computers, but neither of them looks like it's from this house. Let me check the other two next." She proceeds with the remaining networks while the others do whatever it is they're doing.

If none of us can break into the house unnoticed, maybe we can approach innocently and ask to come inside somehow.
Jacob suggests.
Many American horror movies begin with innocent travelers that get stuck or someone who wants to sell something from door to door.
We need to cover our face with something or lower our face to the ground in a way hidden cameras will not be able to catch our faces.

Greg responded to Jacob, "Well, it won't be either of us. Chances are, that old man is in there and he'd reckognize us on sight."
ooc,Did you say there were rubbish cans associated with this house nearby that we might be able to poke about to see if we can determine there might be a woman inside?

OOC: Liz,Liz takes another ten minutes to check out the other two wireless networks to no avail.
"They weren't to pleased to see Liz and Greg when they tried to visit the shop. I can't imagine they will be any more thrilled by visitors trying to see inside their home" says Clay

"True," says Liz, "and we don't want to wake them up if we can help it. We're running out of options here. If none of these networks are for this house, and it looks like they're not, then someone is going to have to go disable the security light before we can proceed." She scans the contents of the two active PCs for any clues as to their owners' names.

Liz disconnects, powers down her laptop, and puts it away. "Looks like a dead end," she says. "One of the connected computers probably belongs to a teenage kid, and the other to someone normal. We'll have to do this the old fashioned way in meatspace, then. Who wants to try to kill the light?"

Greg moves with Jacob until they are up against the corner of the house and hands him a pair of old pliers. "All you have to do is Sneak along the wall without the light's detector or whatever it is switching it on. Then snip the wires with these. I suggest if the light comes on you just run over and snip the wires anyway and keep close to the wall."

Re: IC - CH1 - Home Invasion.

Greg says to Liz, "What can you do about just wacking the whole area - kill all the networks, then we know if these guys have one, they're not going to be using it. The rest of them will just have to live without their porn."

"I don't think they do have one," says Liz. "I've already scanned them all. It's tougher to knock out these networks than it is to get inside them, but even if I can pull it off, it's not likely to achieve anything."

Jacob takes the pliers and place his other hand on his face, whispering a prayer "Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Eḥad" (Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One).

He then nods to Greg and goes to cut the wires with or without being detected.
Sneak (10%) (1d100=59) - Fail.
Once light turns on, Jacob lowers his head and cut the wires. hoping the denizens of the house think a cat passed by.

Greg whispered, "Well... looks like they're sound sleepers. But we should be prepared for more of those zombie-sentries like that old woman at the tattoo place. If we do get attacked by something like that, I suggest leading it back outside and subduing it there as quietly as possible."

Liz doesn't believe in all of this zombie talk, but she's sure that old lady had been a threat - she had seen Jacob's bite wound. "Well, let's sneak up to the house and go through their rubbish," she whispers back.

Psych!,I'm happy for Liz to use Psychology to see if Greg is overeacting, you don't need to ask me. But the way I see it, Mr Handy hasn't actually had Liz demonstrate a level of concern which would imply she's concentrating on the matter, beyond raised eyebrows everytime Jacob and Greg mention the matter. Have I read it right Mr H?

OOC,That's about right. Liz doesn't think that Greg and Jacob are lying, just that they have to be mistaken because of course there's no such thing as zombies. But I think it's Greg that wants to make the Psychology roll to see if he can pick up on Liz's disbelief.

Psych pt 2,Sorry didn't realise you wanted Greg to have a Psych test however in the dark without interrogating Liz it would be very difficult to read her body language, so failed roll seems appropriate.
Clay moves over to where Jacob is standing beneath the light. "Well done mate" he nods at Jacob, "good bit of footwork there" he whispers. Lifting the lid to one of the wheelie bins he looks towards Liz "what we looking for?"

"Evidence that a twelve year old girl is living here," Liz whispers. "Packaging for food or other things geared towards children, maybe even a used tampon - at that age, she might be starting to get her period. If we find anything else that looks interesting, that's a plus." She begins to sort through the garbage.

Jacobs breath heavily. That darn light and his inability to sneak passed it made his heart beat faster. He signals one of them to open the door as he place his hand inside his jacket, holding the silencer without taking it out yet.

Re: IC - CH1 - Home Invasion.

Clay looks up from where he's rooting around in the bin then reaches inside his jacket and pulls out a tool very similar to a crow bar in shape but wider and flatter. "Its for lifting floorboards but its great for getting into the gaps between doors and windows and forcing the bolt out of the lock. Just slip it into the gap right over the lock and you should be able to force the patio doors open without having to break anything."
OOC: A bit of B&E (Breaking and Entry),Anyone who wants to force the door needs a contested strength roll against a target number of 9 (the strength of the door) A fumbled roll means you've either hurt yourself or broken one of the glass panels in the doors.

Greg helps root through the garbage, although he detests the idea of spreading germs all over his hands. He keeps his eyes open for the stuff Liz had suggested, but also for strips of skin like they had seen at the apartment above the tattoo parlor. "What do we do if we don't find any proof of a girl being here?" he asked curiously.

"I'm not sure," whispers Liz as she searches the garbage. "It's highly likely she's here even if we don't find any proof of it. We've already cut the wire to the security lights, so that could tip them off that someone's been here if we leave and come back another time. We may need to go in anyway. But let's see what we find and then make up our minds."
OOC,We are all wearing gloves.

"They're sure eating well...and a lot," whispers Liz. "There's easily enough for an extra person." She looks through the food packaging for anything indicating something a child would eat: sugary breakfast cereals, candy, ice cream, and the like.

Greg surmises, "The speed of that old man was superhuman. It would burn a lot of calories to energize like that. Perhaps they need the extra food just to fuel their bodies sufficiently." He chuckled a moment at a thought... and when he felt others looking at him oddly, he explained, "I guess going up to the front door dressed as a pizza boy is out."

Clay gives a sheepish grin then looks at the others, "We'll unless anyone else has any ideas we either put a brick through it and open it from the inside or we put two of us on it but I can't imagine it'll be quiet" he whispers.
OOC: B&E All,if you want to try two people on the crowbar then its STR + (1/2 STR of the second person) VS Door Str 10. Failure will shatter the door (very noisey) and a fumble will likely result in the injury of the primary person.

Greg shook his head at the garbage bin as he whispered "Nothing telling of a girl being here. Some used tampons would have been nice. Gross, but nice." He looked to Liz and shrugged uneasily as he replaced the lid on top of the garbage can.

Greg headed over to where the other two men were struggling with the door and said in a whisper, "If you couldn't get it, I doubt very much I could. Maybe we should check the windows to see if they are locked?" He crept over to the nearest window to check it out.

Peering through the window Greg determines the downstairs windows (at least) are double glazed and security locked. The French doors offer the best way into the house as although they are also locked they offer the weakest point of entry.

Clay looks at Greg "Its all together, or just put a brick through it. Unless anyone has a better idea?"

The whole door seems to flex in its frame and their is the soft sound of glass cracking, just for a moment Jacob thinks the glass in the door is going to shatter then with what seems like a fairly loud crunch door finnally flys open. Luckily thick drapes prevent the door banging into anything when it does so.

Jacob enters what is clearly a dining room, the table and chairs have been moved over to one side to make space, but its not clear for what purpose but the room is otherwise bare of any decoration. There is a doorway in the far wall which Jacob knows leads to the downstairs hallway.

Move Silently (1d100=94) - eek. being quiet is alien to a lawyer.

Jacob motions for the others to come and ponders about why they moved everything to one side.

Greg sticks close to the wall to avoid being observed from above as much as possible. They'd have to open the window and poke their head out to see him now... if the window wasn't already open. He gets his pistol out and quietly cocks it to put a bullet in the chamber, then takes it off 'safe'.

Outside Greg realises the others have left him alone.

There is no cover in the hallway which is bare except for a small side table on which a small oil lamp is burning.

At the bottom of the stairs Clay raises his pistol and fires, even with the suppressor on it sounds awfully loud. Its not clear wether he hits his target who jumping back momentarily reveals a large gun in one hand.

Liz knows that the shotgun will make a lot of noise, but they're past the point where stealth will work. She's never tried to kill anyone before, but she knows that it's either him or them, and she's well aware of what he could do to her if given the chance. She doesn't intend to give him that chance. She fires wildly, the stress of the situation disrupting her aim.

In comparison to the two moderated automatics Liz's shotgun is akin to a cannon being fired. There is a deafening roar followed by the small hallway filling with a cloud of wood and plaster as Liz blows a chunk of the bannister out of the wall in her haste. The tall man at the top of the stairs stumbles back round the corner out of sight.
Greg,There really isn't anywhere to take cover - if Greg wants to make sure nothing/no one is going to sneak up on them then he'd be better of checking the rest of the downstairs is clear.
Hit not hit?,Spot hidden to see if the man is injured in which case his stumble backwards was clearly a result of injuries. - Jacob clearly thinks he's hit him and Greg thinks he hit him.

Almost immediatly after Liz speaks there is a a hoarse shout from the bedroom and a scream. The hallway gets visibly brighter as the light shining under the door of the master bedroom visibly increases.

A shot crashes over Jacob's head striking the wall just above his head and showering him with plaster dust. (Shot came almost certainly from the room to the left of the master bedroom)

As Jacob runs over across the hallway to the open doorway he can clearly see a pair of feet just inside the doorway. Behind him he hears a cry from Clay "What the F*ck!!"

When sitting and watching a fire, it is easy to get the idea that it is alive. It moves dynamically, it dances and sends sparks. It is able to spread across a surface, and move about from combustible object to combustible object. It consumes materials and may even seem to breath as it consumes oxygen, but Liz reckons that's not the same as actually having life. On the other hand, as the hallway brightens and Liz looks up, the ball of flames sliding around the corner above the stairs and almost directly over her head seems to be measuring Clay and Liz up for size, with an intellect which is both horrifying and alien.
Liz:,SAN check please.

To Liz's amazement the fire seems to have moved from Clays back and shoulders to his chest and torso leaving the back of his jacket a blackened smoking mess. The only consolation however small is Clay's shouts are a clear indication the fireproof jacket is working to some extent.

Upstairs, Jacob doesn't have to look hard the man is bare chested and certainly has tattoos but in the darkened room (no light and curtains drawn) its almost impossible to tell whether they are the same as those on the men in the tattoo parlour.

Downstairs, Greg runs from the kitchen to the foot of the stairs. He can see someone standing at the top of the stairs (who he believes from their build is probably Liz) wreathed in flames.

Liz lies on her backside in a cloud of CO[sub]2[/sub] the flame goes out with a wail like escaping gas although Liz thinks it sounds more like a scream. She looks up to see a well built woman of middling years barrelling towards her with a large knife in one hand and a look of grim determination on her face.

Jacob pokes his head out of the doorway only to have it nearly shot off as a huge chunk is blown out of the door my the older man they first spotted arriving at the tattoo parlour wielding a huge pistol.
OOC: Xmas pause,I'm still waiting on Imps statement for Greg, but I shall put the game on pause until the new after that. happy Holidays everyone and see you in the new year.

Greg charges up the stairs coming almost face to face with a large middle age woman as she drops on top of Liz a huge knife in one hand.
Liz:,Liz can make a Dodge roll to roll out of the way, try and blind her with the fire extinguisher or shoot the shotgun one handed (v.significant penalties)
The man in the door way takes another shot at Jacob, and Jacob suddenly feels as though someone has pushed a red hot poker through his leg.
OOC: Jacob,CON roll please or fall over immediately.

Depending on Greg to protect her, Liz tries to roll out of the woman's reach and out of the line of fire, but she's just a little too slow. As she rolls, she stuffs the extinguisher back into her pocket and grips the shotgun in both hands.
OOC,Greg has a ready firearm, so he should be able to get a shot off before the woman attacks. If I'm still conscious after this round, I'll have mine ready for the next round.

Jacob leg hurts but he does not pay attention to it. He focus his attention on the man before him with the feeling of a divine protection from god. He tries to aim and shoot back at the man, but realises he has ducked back out of sight.

ooc,Greg doesn't really want to kill anyone, he was more interested in pulling Liz to safety. However, if it looks like the woman is going to stab Liz before he can manage that task, he will opt to take a pot-shot at her. Let me know, ghill.
As Greg comes up the stairs, he sees the woman lunging at Liz and Liz's response grabbing her shotgun. He knows things are getting ugly, and his handgun is at the ready. Quickly, he ascertains if he has the opportunity and time to pull Liz to safety before the woman can attack before determining his action. He wonders if this woman is also showing signs of being dead.

OOC: Greg,The woman looks very lively. From Greg's point of view the woman is clearly intent on slashing Liz with her knife, grabbing Liz would probably end up with Liz getting stabbed in the legs rather than elsewhere. NOTE - He does not see Liz trying to move out of the way as this action and hers occur at the same time.

ooc,Well... that sucks. Greg isn't really sure he's ready to take someone's life, not to mention his chance to hit is pretty crappy. However, he is at point blank, so he has that going for him.
Greg had to act fast. Yanking Liz to safety was no guarantee that the woman wouldn't strike her femeral artery, which would kill liz within a minute. He had to act fast, so he pulled up his pistol and took a shot that went wide.

The crack of the pistol close to her head clearly throws the woman off her stride. She trips on Liz's feet (fumbles attack) tries to regain her balance but ultimately loses her footing and slips down the stairs feet first.
OOC: Greg,LUCK roll please Imp, or Greg and the woman fall down the stairs together in a tangle. if avoids falling he can act as he likes if he falls then its hand to hand/grappling.
OOC: Liz,next round Liz can either get her shotgun in hand or get to her feet/orientate herself - Liz is aware of at least one other person taking pot shots at them from the master bedroom.
NEXT ROUND - actions please.

OOC,Wasn't I able to get the shotgun ready last round, which would allow me to fire this round? Even if not, I should be able to fire a firearm that isn't ready later in the round, during the second DEX cycle. I think I might also be better off staying prone with bullets flying. Can I see either of the bad guys from my current position?

Re: IC - CH1 - Home Invasion.

by ghill
OOC: Liz,Neither of the two bad guys are in sight. Bad girl has tumbled down the stairs w/without Greg, while bad guy is almost certainly hiding behind the door of the master bedroom up to something bad. With regards the shotgun Liz is prone, just having dodged a knife wielding maniac, with fire extinguisher in one hand and shotgun in your other. if Liz stays on the ground she can get the shotgun and herself into a firing position, but if she's going to climb to her feet first then while she still may be able to fire (2nd DEX) it will be at some disadvantage. So yeah Liz staying on the ground makes a great deal of sense.

The woman looks pretty normal to Greg, no obvious tattoos no funny glowing eyes and she's panting and yelling so Greg can reasonably assume she's not a zombie. She did have a wicked looking knife in her hands when she took Greg's legs out from under him on the way down the stairs.
OOC: Gregs Gun?,Make a Luck roll and Greg's held onto it in the fall. He may then fire if he wishes almost certainly hitting (don't fumble) unless the old woman dodges. Otherwise its fisticuffs or grappling.

Luck - success!,Luck (85%) (1d100=55)
Although the situation is a bit hairy and confusing, and true enough Greg wasn't sure who's arms and legs he had landed upon at the bottom of the steps - if they were his own or that of the woman - he did manage to keep an iron grip on the handgun. He wanted so much to just push away from her and hold her captive at gun point, but she still had a knife somewhere and she would not hesitate to use it... he was sure. So he took a shot at such a close range as he was trying to separate and get out of knife range.
Handgun (anything but a botch) - success!,Handgun (20%) (1d100=78) - damage = 11 Colt .45 damage (1d10+2) (1d10+2=11)
Greg wasn't sure if he hit or not because he closed his eyes... but the muzzle of the pistol was pressed against something on the woman when he squeezed the trigger and he felt the blood splatter splash back warmly onto his hand and face.

Guys, just a quick reminder as to where everyone is and what they are doing.

Greg is at the bottom of the stairs out of sight of Jacob and Liz having just fallen down the stairs with the old woman, from the sounds of gunshots and shouts it doesn't sound as though things are entirely finished down there.

Liz is lying prone at the floor at the top of the stairs aiming in the direction of the door of the master bedroom.

Jacob is in the room directly to the left of the master bedroom(see plans). The man who shot him was from the master bedroom but ducked back before Jacob was able to fire back.

Plans here

Jacob leans against the doorframe of the bedroom gun in hand. He can feel blood pooling in his shoe and something inside his leg seems to grate together every time he puts weight on the leg. While adrenalin kept him on his feet the pain is now getting quite unbearable.

On her back Shotgun held between her knees Liz can hear rasping breaths coming from Clay's otherwise imobile (unconcious) body. But her eye is drawn to the door of the master bedroom where a sickly yellow glow is now visible beneath the doorway.
OOC Jacob, royya If nothing else Jacob needs to do something about his leg injury.

Jacob sits back on the bed almost collapsing as his leg gives way unexpectedly. Taking a deep breath he tries to tear the bedsheet into bandages but his hands are slick with blood which prevents him getting a grip strong enough to tear it. Giving up in frustration, Jacob pulls off a pillowcase and ties it around his leg. Blood darkens Jacob's impromptu bandage disturbingly fast.

The blast from the old pistol is deafening to Greg's ears and jarring on his wrist pressed as it is awkwardly against the woman. The results however are dramatic the womans struggles subside and she pushes herself up into a sitting position with her back against the wall. Greg thinks he shot her in the stomach but can see blood on her hands and leg.

Moments later Greg hears a shotgun blast from upstairs as mote filled smoke starts to drift down the stairs.

Jacob nods and begins to jump on one leg as he brace himself on the stairs rail. When he passes by the woman downstairs, he kneels beside her to check her for signs of life, any tattoos and any items she might carry. If she have signs of conscious, he will slam the pistol into her head with heavy heart.
His party did a crime over here and the house must burn to ashes with the bodies. Jacob still does not believe he is part of this, but thinking about the situation, who ever believed about tattoos that spring to life and zombies … Jacob shakes his head to clear the thoughts and continue forward.

Liz starts to drag Clay down the stairs conscious of the horrible smell of burn hair and meat and the sound of his feet banging against the stairs every few steps.
OOC: Jacob, royya, Jacob needs to make a CON roll every time he moves. if he fails then while he can move down the stairs he'll do so shuffling down on his backside. I intentionally haven't mentioned HP's at the moment, but if its not clear Jacob is dying from blood loss. At this point on top of all the pain from his leg Jacob will be feeling nauseous, his vision will be becoming increasingly blurred, he may even pass out momentarily. Doing ten steps in one go without sitting down is going to be an achievement. Beating the woman unconscious is probably beyond him at the moment
At the bottom of the steps Greg finds a light weight door clearly designed to sound proof the room behind it, through the crack in the door can see a brightly lit room. The room is unlike the rest of the house in as much as its nicely furnished (expensively so - plasma screen TV, Xbox 360/Play Station stereo, leather couches) and decorated "teen girl" there three young girls in the room two smaller children (Greg estimates 9-11) and a teen who is ushering the younger back towards bedrooms doors.

I managed to extinguish it before I got too badly burned - I'm just a bit singed round the edges and knackered. It hurts like hell, but I'll live. No sooner was it out than the old man and the woman came out of the bedroom. The old man shot Jacob in the leg, and the woman came at me with a knife. She tripped over my legs while I was rolling aside, and she took a tumble down the stairs, knocking over the doc who was on his way up. I think he shot her. The old man retreated to the bedroom and shut the door, then I saw this glow on the other side. I fired through the door, but I don't know whether or not I hit him. I heard glass break, so he might have got out the window. Then these burning ashes came out the hole in the door and started setting fire to everything - they're alive too, somehow. I dragged you down the stairs, and Jacob fell as he was coming down. Not sure where the doc went, but he said he thought he knew where to find Elira and he's trying to rescue her. I think that about covers it. Think you can walk?"

Clay looks at Liz clearly a bit surprised by her outburst. "Oh" he says and starts to struggle to his feet. His face turns pale when he looks at Jacob. "Bloody hell mate mate you look like sh*t! Here, give me your arm" Clay grabs Jacobs arms and pulls him to his feet, putting his arm around his shoulder. "OK Liz what now?"

Liz supports Jacob from the other side and helps guide him to the dining room. "Let's go to the dining room, gents," she says. "That'll put us closer to the back door, and we'll have to leave soon as we're done. The house is on fire, you know - not to mention the coppers and the fire brigade will be showing up before long."

The ceiling abouve the stairs ripples with flame and bits of burning material flutter down into the hallway, as Jacob, Greg and Liz stagger into the dining room. The sound of sirens can be clearly heard through the open french doors. "Sh*t!...<momentary pause while Greg listens>...OK, they're fire brigade.... at least I think they are?" says Clay. Greg can tell there is talking going on elsewhere, but he can't make anything out over the girl yelling in Albanian. He sniffed the air as obviously as he could hoping the girl would be able to smell burning wood and paint from above. The look of urgency on his face is unmistakable as he beckons them to follow with a wave of his hand, and turns to head up the stairs before he too is trapped within a burning building.

While Greg cant hear anything from upstairs but the crackle of the fire, he does hear some lound banging and a raised voice coming from the door to his immediate right. Just outside the door are two water-based fire extinguishers, and someone has burnt some kind of sigils into the door frame. The door iteslf is padlocked shut, hung from two nails across the door is fine gold chain.

Meanwhile, the older girl urges the two younger girls towards what are apparently their bedrooms, clearly unsympathetic towards Greg's unspoken suggestion.

Downstairs: Greg tries the door and finds that in addition to the padlock the door has been locked.

Upstairs: Liz enters the hallway now rapidly filling with smoke. Above her head, Liz notices the burning motes gathering together to form something entirely new.

Liz hurries into the Kitchen where she finds a a kitchen cabinet has been pulled away from the wall to reveal a set of stairs leading down into a cellar. Somewhere behind her Liz hears something structural collapsing.

Downstairs in the cellar, the door gives under Greg's shoulder flying open to bounce against the wall, the room is small but expensively decorated (in the same teen girl chic style) bent over in the center of the room in a light silk shift and the same leather jacket he last saw her wearing at the airport is Elira. She looks up at Greg with a face filled with a mixture of fear expectation and relief. Greg sees she has been hurridly shoving clothes and possessions into a plastic shopping bag.

"Besides this one and Elira, there's two other little girls down here, and this one seems brainwashed into doing the others' bidding," Greg tells Liz. He kept the gun trained on the girl and said, "There's no time to dig out surgical masks, not that it'd make much difference keeping smoke from filling your lungs with every breath. My suggestion is to hold your breath when we go up, and breath through your sleeve if you have to take a breath - and keep low. The hardest thing is probably going to be trying to find our way out when we can't see through the smoke. I think I remember the path back to the kitchen door, so we should be alright." Greg handed Elira's bag of belongings to her and told her, "Get out... go!"

"Right," says Liz, nodding. She picks up on the teenage girl's threat, but she isn't about to be bullied. She smiles and waves at the little girl, stepping to one side to make room for her to get out. "It's all right, sweetie," she says soothingly. "We've come to get you out of here." She gestures to the girl to come out of the bedroom. Even though Liz doubts the girl understands English, she hopes she can get the point across through her tone and body language. "The house is on fire, so you need to get out now." She spreads her arms wide and tries to simulate flames. "FWOOSH!" Then she points to the extinguisher she carries and mimics fighting a fire.

Elira opens the other door (another brief argument occurs between her and the other teen) revealing another girl (8-9yrs) is revealed this one in a Disney princess nightie, Elira takes the little girl by the hand and makes for the doorway to the stairs.

The ceiling in the hallway is a sheet of flame, just visible through the thick black smoke. motes of burning material float through the air almost dancing on the hot air.

Ducking as low as she can to get at the clearer air Liz can smell her hair singeing as the small motes of burning material dancing in the air touch her hair.

Clearing the kitchen Greg watches Liz as she staggers into the relative safety of the dining room. Closely followed by the other two girls both of who are coughing violently. As Greg moves to follow he watches as the flames in roof above him start to gather in the ceiling above him and then almost like molten wax form a column of fire which reaches down to the floor blocking his escape route through to the dining room and outside.

OOC: Are we there yet?,I believe Clay secured 4 of the small fire extinguishers, so yes Greg has one in a holster hanging from his belt its point blank pistol skill to use. Under normal circumstances, yeah you would walk across the kitchen in about four steps. However, under normal circumstances the kitchen is not so full of smoke that you cant see beyond the arms reach and more importantly you're not on fire :)
Greg hears the kitchen window shatter and a blast of cooling air wash across his face as he bumps into the kitchen sink and whirls away in a fruitless effort to try and avoid the clinging flames. The heat on his back is increasingly painful a clear sign the protective jacket is failing. Grabbing the sink he starts to pull himself through the window still ablaze.

Greg is trying his best not to breathe, knowing that fire into the lungs is perhaps the worst thing that could happen to him right now. His main thought is to pull himself outside and start rolling on the ground in hopes of putting out the blaze. He knows, perhaps denyingly, that the fire is clinging to him like white on rice - most unnaturally. But he doesn't know how to fight an unnatural fire monster. He does know how to handle being on fire under normal situations.

In all the excitement, he's forgotten all about his fire extinguisher.

"How about that church where we met the priest the other day?" suggests Liz. "He'll speak their language and can shelter them, or will know someone else who can." She coughs again, then tries to treat herself for the smoke inhalation, but the coughing fit prevents her from doing so effectively.
OOC,I already rolled for Clay's HP recovery when I did the First Aid roll and got 3, so he's fully healed. We also lost some MPs from the fire vampires, but those will come back over time. A good night's sleep should fix that.

Oh… god, I’m so happy to see you … doctor … I thought I was going to die., I think I got shot in the leg, not sure if the bullet is still in there.
Jacob says to Greg as he lay down in the back seat.
I think I can handle the driving back to someone’s place … but it hurts, note sure how much time I can hold. Turn on the heat … I’m cold.

"So which is first girls to the Church, or Jacob back to his place?" says clay from behind the wheel.

Greg looks at Jacob's leg and says to Clay, "Jacob's. I don't want to clue in anyone else we had anything to do with that fire. There are going to be questions... a lot of them. We clearly can't take Jacob to the hospital. Bullet wounds are reported at once. I'll have to treat him there at his house."

He asked Jacob, "You've lost a good deal of blood, and are slipping into shock. Try to remain calm and awake. Do you know what blood type you have?"

He says to Liz, "Can you prop his other leg up? And a blanket... do we have a blanket?"

He checked to see if the leg was still bleeding and if so he kept pressure on the wound in hopes of clotting it and preventing further blood loss.

Liz nods and assists Greg in treating Jacob. "Do Greek Orthodox priests hear confessions, with the confessional seal and all?" she asks with a sly grin. "If they do, we could safely tell Father Marakis, and he wouldn't be able to tell the police or anyone. He'd also understand why we had to do what we did. If nobody knows, I can look it up on the Internet."

Medicine:,Consider Jacob at ease, no longer in pain, but the effects of the medicine with regards regained HP's not occurring until he's had proper care and bed-rest however the injury wont get any worse at this point.
Confession:,Yes they do but he would have to believe that you are a penitent making a genuine confession with everything it involves, rather than just looking to bind him with a confessional seal.
"Well its gone 12, so what do we do? Go wake up the priest now, or wait until the morning?"

You can also confess before me.
Jacob smiles to Liz with a twitched smile.
Though we don’t need to confess to a priest or a Rabbi since god's sees everything what so ever.

medicine question,So is it possible to follow up the medicine roll with first aid to recover the hit points quicker? Should I have done first aid first then followed it up with medicine?
Sanity check question,I rolled a critical success on a sanity check. Does that give me a pot of gold or something equally cool? Also, since I made the sanity check, do I just determine that the fire was acting strangely and not necessarily determine it to be some supernatural creature? Or am I quite well aware that there was something living about it?
Greg washes up and then starts to tend his own burn wounds. His mind plays over the incident with clarity as he tries to determine just what was going on with the fire.

First Aid,First aid can only be applied to an individual wound once, Clay had already treated Jacob's wound and stopped him bleeding to death, Greg's medicine roll sets Jacob up for further HP recovery assuming he gets bed rest and proper ongoing treatment.
Sanity check:,Understanding never comes without a cost, in the cold light of day Greg has probably decided the whole thing was a trick of thermo dynamics....it very definitely wasn't alive!!!! No siree bob!

"Do you think He'll forgive us?" asks Liz, looking down. "I...I killed a man back there. He was about to shoot us, but we did break into his house and all. Well, I can't think of anywhere else to bring the girls tonight except to Father Marakis. It's not like I can suddenly show up at my mum and dad's place with four little sisters in tow." She pauses as she has another coughing fit. "Sorry, got a lungful of smoke."
OOC,If you want to use First Aid on someone else, Liz is still down 2 HP and hasn't had it successfully applied yet.

Its about twenty minutes later when Clay pulls up around the back of St Agatha’s, the Greek Orthodox Church in Hounslow. There is still light coming from the small room where Odetta is staying.

"Thats where the old bird sleeps isn't it?" says Clay relaxing somewhat now the van is hidden from the road.

"Yes, that's right," says Liz, nodding once more. "Best if she doesn't even see us, and looks like she's still awake." She coughs again and looks at Greg. "Can you do anything for me, please?"

Hurry, do it quickly. I will stay in the car, I don't want to put anymore stress on my leg then is needed, I will rest... and pray for us.

Greg checked over Liz and found no immediate injuries that he could attend to. "I'm sorry, but I think in order for you to feel better, you may need some oxygen and bed rest."

He shrugged to Liz and put a hand on her shoulder, "I know you feel bad... I do to. Hell, what we did back there goes completely against my oath as a doctor. I'm as conflicted as one can get. But the thing that keeps me bright about it is knowing that we rescued three little girls from their clutches. Lord knows what would have happened to them, probably another burnt offering, sacrifice to whatever pagan god they worship."

"I wouldn't put it like that," says Liz. "We'll be handing them off to Father Marakis, who will be able to help them, not getting rid of them. And we've rescued four, not three, Doc - even if one of them didn't particularly want to be rescued." She smiles at the girl she carried out of the burning house. "I think this one's grown rather attached to me. It'll be hard for both of us to say goodbye, but we'd better get on with it. I'm ready to go inside."

"Well we need to make a decision about who does or says what because I think that is father whatsisname Makarana who has just come out to find why there is a van pulled up in his car park after midnight." says Clay

Indeed looking out you can all see the figure of Father Marakis leaving the vicarage armed with a torch and approaching the van.
Father Marakis, unless someone stops him Father Marakis will approach the driver's side of the van and shine the light in seeing everyone in the van.

Greg says, "Well... maybe we should meet him half way." He gets out of the van and starts to approach Father Marakis. He tries to keep his new bandages as out of sight as possible so as not to alert the father too soon that something was amiss. He knew they would have to tell him something, and indeed... it may already be on the news. But he wanted the explanations to be on their terms. He closes the door to the van behind him.

"Good evening," Greg says in the darkness to the approaching preacher-man. "Father Marakis... we spoke earlier," Greg explains hoping the man would recognize his voice. "We are terribly sorry to bother you so late in the night, but we have a very important task to ask of you."

Father Marakis shines his torch towards Greg careful not to shine it full in his face, but clearly taking the time to give Greg a thorough once over.

"I do indeed remember you, Good evening Greg." Father Marakis looks past Greg and shines the torch towards the van, then loud enough for those in the van to hear "Is that Clay I see in the van? Shall I assume the rest of your friends are here as well?... I was going to head to bed, but if you have things to talk about you better come inside."

Liz also emerges from the van, reasoning that she has no visible injuries. "Good evening, Father," she says, joining them. "Yeah, I think we have a lot to discuss."

Father Marakis torch flicks over to Liz and then back to Greg, in the torch light both can clearly see just how smoke blackened the other is. "You had better come in,so we can discuss matters in comfort, I have coffee, tea and some very good Ouzo. Go sit, I will bring it in while you tell me your story."
OOC: Jacob,Clay will assist Jacob into the vicarage if he'd like to be present.
OOC: Your story, feel free to gloss over this. Just say what details your telling him and what you are omitting if any.

Jacob will gladly take Clay's help since he want to be present and hurry Greg to hand the girls to the father and attend him. Maybe they can treat him over there, in the church and not risk taking Jacob to the hospital where questions can be asked.

OOC: Jacob's injuries, while clearly Jacob would be better off in a hospital, first aid has stabilised his injury, now all he really needs is bed rest and supervision which Greg can do at Jacob's home.

Liz nods and helps the girls out of the van and into the church.
OOC,Basically, I think we should tell him that we traced the old terrorist we were told about to his house and staked it out. We went through his trash and discovered that they were eating far more than enough food to account for the four people that lived there, which we took as confirmation of our suspicion that they were keeping Elira there. We tried to get in quietly to find Elira and get her out, but the noise alerted them and a shootout ensued, during which Jacob was wounded. The old man retreated to his bedroom, from which he set the house on fire (I won't mention how the fire seemed to be intelligent). Greg found the secret door to the basement, where we found not just Elira, but the three other girls as well, and I'll mention that the teenage girl seemed to be on the old man's side and is hostile towards Elira. We got the girls out of the house and brought them here.

Father Marakis nods his head in understanding. "It is the sort of behavior one has come to expect from their kind*." He takes a sip of his coffee before looking at the four girls with a kindly but rather world weary smile. Am I to take it that you are looking to me to get the girls back into the safe hands of the authorities? The priest pauses long enough to take another sip of coffee. "I will need to mobilise my paritioners, it would not be practical or appropriate for me to keep these girls here while we wait for the authorities. Can you stay here while I make some arrangements?"

"Yes, that's why we brought them here," says Liz. "Thank you, I'd be glad to stay. I don't really want to go home looking and smelling like I do, anyhow."

Father Marakis starts making phone calls and over a period of several hours first one then another of his parishioners turn up to take the girls away. Until at 6am all of the children have been found temporary homes.

"I will approach the authorities first thing tomorrow. I have some friends in Children's services who will be more concerned about the children's welfare and seeing they get back to their families than the whys and wherefores of how they came to be with me or my parishioners."He pauses for a moment."Please don't take this the wrong way, but It would be good idea I think for us not to see one another for some time. Now if you have nothing further to add I believe I will try and grab a few hours sleep."

"We are very fortunate to have your support. Thank you Father. And if you could... say a prayer for me? I..." Greg blushes a moment as he considers just what he wanted to say. "Doctors are not supposed to harm, but we had no choice if the girls were to be rescued. I feel awful."
