Characters

Spawn of Azathoth is a classic era Call of Cthulhu campaign intended for four to six investigators. A macabre death begins the adventure and by following clues, the player characters find themselves caught up in events of cosmic import which sees them spanning the globe and fighting for their very lives, not to mention their sanity along the way.

Character Generation:

Standard rolls for characters, you can assign them as you see fit. (Str, Con, Pow, Dex and App = 3D6 ... Siz & Int 2D6+6 ... Edu 3D6+3 and so on) Remmember that you can make adjustments for the character's age - minimum = Edu + 6. For every 10 years over this add 1 point Edu. For every 10 years above 40 subtract 1 point from your choice of Str, Con, Dex or App.

You can use investigators from the Investigator's Companion Vol II if you so wish. They offer some nice angles not available from the viewpoint of the basic rule-set. I am using 6th Edition rules, though that should make little or no difference to the game in reality.

Nothing above 80% for professor types (in their specialised fields) and 70% for non-professorial investigators. Hobbies based skills can be used as you wish, apart from adding to Dodge ... you will need to have a valid reason to increase your dodge above Dex x 2. Oh and no Mythos or dream lore knowledge either.

With regard to money, I am not a bean counter, so will not be paying too close attention to this. I will assume that the Doctor and two professors will be roll D3 for either $6,500, $7,500 or $10,000. The student and crook will roll D3 for $3,500, $4,500 or $5,500 which I feel reflects their social status better than random die rolls.

Any other questions please post them below or PM me. Now that Mr Handy has the forum up and running I can start playing with things and get the game under-way, hopefully before the end of February, what with conventions etc. Thanks for setting this up so quickly Mr. H

Edit: add note about Mythos and Dream Lore

Joseph is the only child of the Doctor Philip and Mary Huckleberry. His Father was a famous and respected doctor in the community that traveled with Maria to India two years ago and is expected to return in a couple of years. In the meantime, Philip decided to register Joseph to a medicine school and ordered him to attend the family business within town as his son Joseph showed great skill by following his father’s way practicing medicine.
Though, Jospeh is a beginner, he is a skilled hunter as he traveled with his father every second Sunday to the woods and mountains to hunt Geese and pheasants.
Today, Joseph lives with the house’s butler and first maiden as he studies his first master year.

Appearance and personality:
Meredith is around 5’ 9’’ and of average build with thining fair hair. His receding hairline gives him the high forehead look often associated with academics ensuring that he is referred to as some kind of ‘mad professor’. A image that is helped by his penchant for wearing a much ‘abused’ tweed sportsjacket, frayed and repaired throughout, and a ludicrous red and yellow spotted bow tie. He smokes a much smoked meercham pipe, carved in the likeness of a wolf’s head which he refers to as his ‘Romulus’, and has a habit of emphasising his speech with short jabbing motions of the pipe. Although not utterly inactive , and able to show a clean pair of heels with the best, he prefers the comforts of his study and the safety of books to the dangers of the outdoors.
Meredith likes to follow a strict personal regime, he rises every morning without fail at Six am and takes a breakfast of 2 lightly boiled eggs, two slices of white bread and a small cup of coffee (having been converted to coffee several years ago)
He takes minimal exercise, preferring to spend his time in study rather than waste it sweating and grunting unnecessarily
Although his area of expertise is the study of ancient history, mainly confined to the area around the Mediterranean basin in particular the rise of the Roman Empire and its advancement of civilisation throughout the European continent, he is particularly fond of the idea that Rome rather than heralding civilisation throughout the Western European land mass, destroyed what may have been a burgeoning ‘Celtic’ empire considerably more ‘civilised’ than that which Rome was to impose. It is a debate that he is known to indulge in over a ‘quiet’ drink amongst friends. He is also a somewhat vocal, at times, non-believer in the church, seeing the modern churches message as having been politicized by the collapsing Roman Empire thereby replacing temporal control with spiritual control.

Background:
Born in Cardiff, Wales. Meredith was able to pursue a scholarly career gaining a Phd in the study of ancient history at Cambridge before emigrating to the USA to take up an offered position with Brown University

Background
Mark was always a free spirit, a care free, selfish, drifter. He made his living performing burglaries, blowing all his money on whatever he felt like, this eventually included drugs. His only non-self destructive hobby was his love of history, he would come to the college frequently, often sneaking in, to read at it's library. In his many years doing this he eventually ran into and befriended the late doctor.

Appearance and Personality
Mark is easy going, quiet, and slow to anger. He has a big nose, and greasy hair. Not caring much for what others think of him, Mark never cared to much about his looks, though if he is taunted enough he will snap, and that doesn't end well for the person who taunts him. He is very friendly but slow to make real friends, and very loyal to those who do earn the title.

I can do 'skill rolls' and so on, in Invisible Castle - no problem with that at all, but cannot, like you get my head round doing stat rolls. it just keeps coming up as an error

Appearance & Personality: David Johnson is a man of average build with blond hair and rugged features. He often has a serious disposition, though he does find plenty of enjoyment in his work. He is not enthralled with academic life, preferring to be out in the field on a dig whenever posssible, though he does give lectures and run his classes professionally and well. He exercises frequently to stay in good shape.

Background: David Johnson has always had a particular fascination with American history, especially pre-Columbian history. He longs to unearth America's buried and forgotten past to discover what things were like before the Europeans arrived. His specialty is the Mayans, and he has long wondered and speculated about the causes of their civilization's sudden collapse, which was the subject of his doctoral dissertation. He has some unorthodox theories about pre-Columbus contact between America and people overseas. While the Viking presence is known and accepted, his ideas about ancient Phoenicians crossing the Atlantic are not. He is able to get some people to have an open mind through his persuasive arguments, but he knows that he needs hard evidence to convince most in the academic world. He hopes to find definitive proof of ancient transatlantic contact someday, thus changing the way history is perceived and immortalizing his name along with other noted archaeologists such as Heinrich Schleimann, the discoverer of Troy, a city once believed to be mythical.

Just awaiting characters from HowerdPhillips and Aliktren and we can start.

For those who have not done so, can we look at getting a picture of their character so that we can see what they look like.

I'd also like each character to jot down a few notes, say a couple of paragraphs, on what their daily routine, likes and dislikes might consist of - it helps get you into your character's frame of mind and allows me to try and find out what makes you all tick.

Do you want to try and incorporate the much discussed character traits as released in Gaslight II. Your choice at the end of the day.

Any other house rules you would like to see incorporated?

I'll add the extra information you requested when I have a chance, but it may need to wait for the weekend. I also realized that I'd forgotten to apply the bonuses from the Investigator's Companion. I get +2 EDU (with 40 occupational skill points) and +10 to Credit Rating. This will take my Credit Rating over 70, though. Should I reduce it by 5 points and return those points to the occupational points pool? Also, I can spend occupational skill points on Spanish, thus freeing up the hobby points I had spent on it for something else.

No problem ... I was going to set a provisional start date for the game for either 3rd or 4th March if everyone is in agreement. I'll drop HowerdPhillips and Alikern a pm to see if they still wnat to come on board, if not we can start with 4 and drop another 2 in as and when if everyone is in agreement.

Yeah, that sounds alright ... that investigator's companion has a lot of little extras like this. And to think I put off buying it because I figured it was not going to be a worthwhile purchase ... but when I saw it for £5:00 it just had to be purchased.

Starting this weekend sounds good to me. I've readjusted my character sheet, and now I just have to update the background.

I paid more than that for the Investigator's Companion, but not too much more. At least by waiting, you saved a good deal of money. I got it at a discount during Chaosium's Halloween sale in 2011, along with shopworn copies of the Keeper's Companion 2 (I got the first one as a free PDF on GM Day one year), the Malleus Monstrorum (which shortly afterwards appears to have gone out of print), Cthulhu Invictus, and Cthulhu Dark Ages. I got enough stuff that shipping was free, too.

New character added at Cearlan's invitation. I used a random dice roller and Byakhee to help me put her together, I think everything is kosher.

Sarah Hawkins

Image

Sarah Hawkins is a female student of Dr Phillip Baxter, who is technically attending the Pembroke Women's College in Brown University. She is in the middle of writing her major history thesis "Historical Darwinism in World Culture", which Dr Baxter is guiding her along with. While she comes from an upper-middle class background, she has a secret: her grandfather was a black slave who escaped from the South through the underground railroad in 1860 and made a success of himself as a successful salesman, eventually marrying an Irishwoman and settling down in settling down in Berlin, Ohio. Their son, mechanically minded, developed an ingenious lubrication system for steam engines that made him wealthy enough to be accepted by his white community as an equal, and married the headstrong daughter of a local bicycle repairman. His daughter Sarah, however, had a lot more trouble growing up in the community, as her status as a "quadroon" marked her out among her peers as a target for social ostracism and snide rumors, a situation her bookish tendencies exacerbated. She spent much of her children helping her father in his workshop or absorbed in a world of literary fantasy.

Sarah is relatively pale and can easily pass as white, which is what she has done since she left Ohio. After moving to Providence for university, became involved with a strange crowd as a member of one of the odder sororities. She has become obsessed with Theosophy and eugenics, and maintains a life-long interest in weird fiction written by the likes of Poe, Chambers and Bierce. She is estranged from her family as she fears that knowledge of her background will cause her to become socially isolated once again. Politically she is a strident supporter of Woodrow Wilson and fears the rise of European anarchism and socialism in the United States, which she sees as barbarians at the gates.

Appearance & Personality: William Edwards is 5'7 and has a rather muscular build. He has dark blond hair and shaves meticulously whilst in civilised areas. He prefers to dress in shades of brown, allowing some frivolity in the form of a green or tan shirt. He looks old for his age, his face worn and his hair grey at the temples. He has a nasty scar running the line of his jaw. He's missing his left ring and little finger.

Edwards is a self-assured man and loves colouring his conversations with anecdotes of his travels and adventures. He usually has a smile on his face, though it is at times uncertain if it is because of genuine amusement or because of his scar. He loves smoking Cuban cigars and does so frequently. Though he can be a little on the rough side, his upper class upbringing shine through in his bearing.
He does not like confined spaces and prefers to spend a great amount of time outdoors.

Background: William T. Edwards was born into steel money in Chicago. Due to his brother Richard being set to inherit the family business, he was free to explore and cultivate his interest in photography and geography. Edwards travelled extensively during his enrolment at Chicago University and his experience with the southern America's and drawing skills earned him a place on the ill-fated expedition to Kate's Lagoon. Edwards was severely wounded there and saved only by the intervention of David Johnson and Martin Sorrell. After a long period of recovery, Edwards decided to focus less on fieldwork, becoming an active sponsor of the National Geographic Society and contributor to its pages. Apart from photographs and maps, he has also published on subjects as diverse as the nesting patterns of the Great Cormorant and the migration pattern of the Atlantic Salmon.

Appearance & Personality: Slight and small, standing at 5'1", Jemima is attractive, though does tend to stand in the background a bit acting like a wallflower, which suits her fine. She wears a fine check coat and beret most of the time. Her startling green eyes top an otherwise pretty face, though she believes this to be otherwise. Tending to wear her blonde hair in a short style that is slightly out of fashion, which adds to her being able to blend into the background.

Background: The fact that she is a cat burglar means that when she attends functions, she can 'case the next job' and wait a while before breaking and entering. Playing the part of a wallflower means that she can avoid confrontation when "casing the joint." Born and bred in Arkham, she is the only daughter of Richard Henry Thorndyke, who recently took over Ace Alarms and Lock-safes. Her father, a reformed burglar himself from Red Hook, New York, lives above the shop whilst she has an apartment in French Hill district. Her father does not know about as it is paid for and furnished by her 'job' which also is unaware of. She secretly learned the 'tricks of the trade' in her father's shop. Coupling this with her excelling at gymnastics at school, which led to her being picked on by the other girls, which in part, has led to her current personality and modus operandi. She knows there is more out there and is keen to improve her lot. She practices her excellent climbing skills in local woods and hills such as Billington's Woods and is able to navigate quite well
