"Most journeys begin less abruptly than they end, and to fix the true beginning of this one in either time or space is a task which I do not care to undertake."

-Goodbye. Goodbye and good luck.

-Au revoir, mes amis.

The train track turns and runs through low hills, the locomotive disappears, all that can be seen are puffs of steam; aboard it are Peter Fleming, Special Correspondent to The Times, and Ella Maillart, Swiss adventuress, they are at the beginning of a secretive--to the Chinese authorities, anyway--travel adventure. Their goal is British India.

Appearance & Personality: Elisabeth Grey is a kindhearted young Englishwoman. She has always excelled at keeping people calm and settling arguments, and she is a dedicated peacemaker. However, she recognizes that there are situations where fighting is warranted. When it is, she uses words as her weapons - and wields them well. Elisabeth is troubled by the rise of fascism in Europe, afraid that it will lead to war.

Background: Elisabeth Grey comes from an upper class family that has a long history in the Foreign Service. Her father, Samuel Grey, is assistant to the Honorable Sir Alexander Cadogan, the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary (who will be given the official title of Ambassador later this year), having come to China to serve on his staff when he arrived in 1934. Elisabeth has come to Peking to join her father during breaks in her studies at Oxford. Now that she has graduated, she has moved there permanently. She currently works as a secretary for the British Embassy's staff, but she hopes to rise through the ranks of the Foreign Office and perhaps even become an ambassador herself one day. She has learned a lot both at university and from her father. Her mother, Evelyn Grey, also went to Peking with her husband, but she was feeling ill today and unable to attend the dinner. However, she insisted that Samuel and Elisabeth go without her and enjoy themselves.

Appearance & Personality: Dr. Henry Renwick is generally an fairly open book, often wearing his heart on his sleeve for all to see. His face however is generally set in a morose cast since his ‘murdering’ his brother and the subsequent fall-out that ensued. Born and raised in Newcastle, his 'Geordie' accent betrays his roots as not being upper class. Though he does try to hide this, often unsuccessfully, for example when under stress. Having served in the Great War, he has seen more than his fair share of the horrors that men can inflict upon each other. Despite his imposed exile from Europe, he has grave concerns over the rise of the odious Hitler as Germany’s Chancellor, believing it could well head towards another war in Europe; didn’t we all learn from the last debacle?

Background: Henry Renwick comes from an upper middle class family that has a history in the local shipbuilding industry. He gained a scholarship to study to be a doctor at the very prestigious Edinburgh University, studying for a brief time under the famous Dr. Joseph Bell. Renwick was teased mercilessly by those whose class was above his own but he persevered and passed his degree with Honours. Once he passed his exams he started to practice in Alnwick, Northumberland. Upon the death of his parents, he moved his younger brother, Alexander, in with him. Alexander, suffered from rheumatic fever as a child, whichleft him suffering with Sydenham’s chorea, more commonly known as St. Vitus’ Dance as well as depression. Following a really severe attack, Renwick gave in to his younger siblings pleas for a merciful release from the lingering pain and effects of his attacks. As a result he was stripped of his right to practice, but won a temporary reprieve on appeal, providing he practised abroad for a protracted period.
He took up a position with Dr. Davidson Black with an archaeological survey at Zhoukoudian and learnt a deal about archaeology during his time there as well as being the site’s medical doctor

Appearance & Personality:
Tall, dark and handsome, easily melts women's hearts. An action man, likes to ride, shoot and hunt. Equally at ease in social situations, an excellent dancer but his heart is in the outdoors and he frets if made to sit still for a long time or be cooped up indoors. Loyal and honourable and expects the same in return. Has a dry sense of humour.

Background:
Born Madrid 1896, Spanish Aristocracy. Went to live and work on family estates in Argentina and Buenos Aires 1910-1925. During this time got the name 'El Aquila' after an adventure with a condor as a teenager and for his continual work against local bandits. Return to Europe aged 29 at the death of family patriarch.

Discovery of family heirlooms having been stolen during the war and Spanish decline. Family persecuted by rebels; decamp to Argentina on imminent civil war but Santiago el Aquila continues into Europe on the hunt for missing treasure. Discovers new religious institution Opus Dei also searching for the treasure. Treasure consists of beaten gold bowl; two items of unknown material, a small metal device and an unusual block (actually a key); and a unidentified stone tablet with an ancient language on it. The treasures came to Spain in the 14th century along the Spice routes from China.

Santiago el Aquila recovers the bowl from German aristocracy and a translation of markings on the bowl (as discovered by the German scholar who bought it from the thieves.) The translations describes an ancient temple/palace/farm in a valley/cliffside in China. The trail of the other treasures leads to the opium dens of East London; the device is discovered at the silver smiths of Chancery Lane, and then out to Omsk. The consorted efforts of other parties to recover these treasures convinces Santiago el Aquila that they must be very special and that the bowl is the least valuable of them.

Santiago el Aquila stores the the bowl in a secure locker in London, wears the device on a thong around his neck and travels on the Trans Siberian to Omsk and then Vladivastok. (Assuming possible) Unbeknown to him he has been followed from London and is set upon in an alley. Luckily he comes out of the fray with the translations and device intact and with a new traveling companion; a strange and silent monk. The trail heads into China so the two jump on a train to Peking. They happen to be at the station when they are invited to Dr. Chee's 'Meet and Greet'.

Appearance & Personality:
Caroline Lamarr is a strikingly tall, beautiful woman. Her height is further emphasised by her choice of clothing. She prefers wearing trousers and shirts, often in brown, tan or other darker colours to emphasise her lush, dark auburn curls. She has sharp, almost predatorial features, giving her a severe mien when she isn't smiling. However, when she does smile, she has a wide, full-teethed smile and stars sparkle in her eyes when she does so.

Fiercely independent, Caroline takes joy in dressing "like a man". She takes even more joy in shocking people with her manners and outspokenness.
Always looking to prove herself and to break through the mould that contemporary society puts women into, she will risk much, even her life, to prove her right.
She seeks thrills, knowledge and adventure, but above all freedom. Though somewhere, deep down, she sometimes imagines she'd like the comfort of a home and family, but those moments rarely last long.

Background:
Raised in Connecticut by wealthy, progressive parents, Caroline easily got accepted into Brown University where she quickly discovered her knack for foreign and ancient cultures. She married fellow archaeologist Thomas Benedict when she finished her Bachelor degree, but the marriage lasted only a year and a half, due to the pair's differing goals and increasing time spent apart and abroad.
After some years of working together with Roy Chapman Andrews on the "Central Asiatic Expeditions", Caroline returned to Brown to go for her Master's degree in 1926.
She finished two years later and published her thesis as a moderately successful book on the Himalayan origin of humanity under the title Ex Oriente Vita:The cradle of life between the Yangtze and Mekong.

In 1934, Caroline asked the Explorers Club for a grant to allow her to further her investigations into the Tibetan origins of mankind and to explore the untamed and unknown western regions of China. Due to her connection to Andrews and her excellent merit at Brown, she was granted the moneys and made ready to field the expedition.
