Travis' Journey: Realisation

by Laine
It's been so long since I spoke with him, but it feels like he berates me everyday. My every step is guided or misguided by my early life experiences. Walter.. did he make it through the night?

Perhaps he should be concerned about making it to work on time, planning out the year or even just brushing his teeth, but instead his concern is with Walter and by proxy, Emily. He will reach for his phone to see if she called during the night. As he picks up his phone he drops the tear soaked panda to the side of the sofa.

I guess they must be okay..I mean she would have called, right?

Travis will pry himself off the sofa and head towards the bathroom to turn on the shower, he strips off his clothes and reveals the sickly frame underneath. His bones are the most prominent features and they pertrude out from underneath his skin as though they will cut through at any moment.

Why couldn't I have been blessed like Walter or Calvin?

As he steps into the shower he will crouch down near the faucet and his tears will join the water flowing down into the depths of the drain.

Too many times to count...

He finally answers the question that the young girl's voice asked.

The water feels strangely cold against his numb skin and the shower provides little refreshment to start off his new day. At least he has plenty of time to prepare himself for another hard day at work but the weeping face of Walter from his painting haunts his mind. It's almost as though they are crying together, forever. At least he'll be able to find out from Emily at work what happened and how it all went.

After he steps out of the shower Travis will go through his early morning routine of a cup of tea and some toast(if he brought any food). He attempts to make himself look professional with his work shoes, a pair of slacks and a dress shirt. Despite his care his clothes seem to drape off his body as though he were a coat hanger, finding clothes to fit his body type had always been difficult.

I'll have to go back to the book store later today for my own car.

Despite the stress and circumstances the previous night it was probably the most excitement he has had since the time he and Calvin ran away. When he collects all of his things he will head out the door to Midwich.

The future still holds hope and that hope are the children of this town. I must be strong if I am going to be there for them.

The sun never seemed brighter when juxtaposed against the torment of his dreams.

The sky is clear with a beautifully shining sun reminding him of why this is a resort town. It almost seems to banish away the horrors and excitement of the night before, almost as though the whole fiasco was nothing but a bad dream. Only the lack of his car could truly convince him that it wasn't on so fine a day. The walk to Midwich is over almost too quickly and soon he is striding up those stone steps, through the little lobby, and past the reception desk where seven little boys and girls are waiting. There's no sign of Emily.

Travis tries to put on a smile and a calm demeanor in front of the children, but sense of unease is on his mind.

I hoped she would be here...

"Good morning everyone, are you waiting for Ms. Latham?"

The children all nod and look at him quietly. These children aren't like the children he's used to. They're not the squirming, energetic children who are all sunshine and entitlement (in a good, deserved way, of course). They quietly squirm, shuffling from foot to foot, scratching heads, and watching with the slightly pinched expression you would expect to see from school children from the 1930s who are being spoken to by the school principal.

They're oddly orderly...

Travis turns to the receptionist desk to see if there is anyone covering for her. If not he will attempt to recall what he can from the sign in procedure that Emily had shared with him the day before.

Travis can see the sign in book sitting just behind the counter. It's a fairly simple procedure. Name and check-in time followed by a check-out time when they start heading home. Rather laborious considering the student numbers and the lack of a computer but it's been school policy since Midwich was founded.

"Please, sir, we were here for about ten minutes, at least," said one.

"Don't be silly," said another. "They won't spring us. We're here early anyhow."

"Alright, I am sorry you've been kept waiting, but thanks for your patience. If you can give me your names and I can sign you in so it shows that you were on time."

Travis will reach behind the counter, take the book and the pen and begin to write down the names of the children as they talk.

Oh well, at least he has a chance to learn a few of their names. At the early morning progresses, more and more children arrive to be checked in. Some are accompanied by parents. Some come in unescorted. He doesn't see that little girl who had spoken to him yesterday morning.

Principal Roseworthy passes him at 9.00AM and gives him a strange look but doesn't ask him about it. "Can you please see me in my office after?" is his only comment.

I hope he isn't upset , I was just trying to help out..Maybe Emily spoke with him though?

When he is done with the last students, Travis will make his way to Principal Ross' office and knock on the door before entering.

"You wanted to speak with me, sir?"
Principal,I believe his name was Ross and the insane principal was Roseworthy?

Principal Ross tipped back his chair and smiled at Travis. "Ah yes, I just notice you doing Ms. Latham's job and while I appreciate it, it really isn't your role. I mean, what did she go off to do anyway? Why isn't she at her desk?" He leans forward. "Or is something the matter? You look... Yeah, well, is everything all right?"
Ergh, damn me for making their names so similar!

" I apologize, infact I only meant to sign several of the children in because they said they had been waiting for some time and I noticed Ms. Latham wasn't at her desk this morning. I didn't realize that I had spent an entire hour of my day there. I was hoping that she'd check in with you this morning..."

Travis gazes akwardly downward as he says that..

I guess the cat is already out of the bag so to speak

"I mean I just figured she'd call her supervisor if she wasn't going to be in. I haven't seen her since yesterday afternoon."

"Oh? Well, this isn't like her at all. I mean, she was always punctual. Never had a sick day off, even when she probably should've, unless I twisted her arm. Do you have any idea what might have happened to her?"

Travis is clearly nervous, but he can't with hold information from their supervisor.

He's our boss..I mean he'd understand..it wasn't my fault.

"Well, Walter Kauffman was in town and she wanted to go to his book signing over at Andy's.."

Travis fidgets with a pen that was still in his hand from when he was having the students sign in.

"There was a situation there and Emily decided to stay with Walter because he had an emotional break down and she didn't want to leave him by himself.."

"Walter Kauffman?" asked the principal. "Don't know the guy. Still, that's even more not very like her. Thought she was, well, y'know ... not that there's anything wrong with that!" He steeples his hands before him on the desk. "Still, she should've called. That's unusual behaviour. She has plenty of personal leave available." He shakes his head. "Strange. Very strange. Well, maybe you should head back to doing what you're doing and I'll call her at home."

"Yes, I hope that she is okay. Would you like me to continue to cover for her or work on prepping the classroom and curriculum? I wouldn't mind seeing the school library and picking out children's stories, if possible. I have my own personal collection of children's stories, but it would be nice to have a look at what is available here."

"Uh, well, I think you should cover her starting and ending shifts where she checks the children in and out. The other teachers can deal with our rather arcane library system if the children want to borrow. Actually, if you want to check out those books, could you do that, or make a point to do that, at recess and lunch? That's when the kids often go and borrow things." Principal Ross smiles proudly to himself. "Yes, I think that plan will cover all of our needs."

"I think that sounds like a wise schedule for the day. I will continue with her clerical assignments for the time being and will check in at the library later this afternoon. I guess I better get back to the front desk to manage phone calls. Is there a procedures binder or sheet that I can reference in case a parent has a question?"

"I'm not sure. I doubt she would've made something like that. It's a small school and she's never taken a day off... I doubt you'll get many, if any, calls really. Heck, one upgrade I did manage to get through is that if her phone goes six rings without being answered it transfers in here, so I wouldn't much worry about phone calls. I can answer them. Just deal with the other bits and bobs. I'm sure you can handle it. Anyway, I've got some ledgers to get to..."

"Alright, sounds good Mr. Ross. I will get back to the front desk and we will see you soon."

Travis, will close the door behind him and sit at Emily's desk and pull out his planning binder to map out the year ahead of him. Travis begins to think of the seasons and what kind of natural features he could bring into his classroom for the children to explore: plants, rocks, etc..

Other than a few late check-ins for the attendance sheets, there is very little other work that interrupts his planning. The other teachers seem to largely keep to themselves and give him little more than a polite greeting on their way here or there. There's not even a single phone call to bother him. Before he knows it, the clock tower in the courtyard is chiming recess and the children are starting to stream out of their respective classrooms to head for the canteen or the courtyard itself. Mostly the courtyard. It is a warm day, after all. Shame it's so gloomy and windowless in the reception area.

This town must not have much of a tax base. I bet this school hasn't been remodeled in ages..

Travis hastily writes out a note indicating that he will be on break for a few minutes, he packs his planning folder and consults the map that the child drew to find his way to the library.

I wonder if the school has materials to let the children write their own stories? It helps push their imaginations and honors the perspective of the child..

OOC,sorry can we presume that Travis keeps maps and classroom layout designs, etc. in his planner?

The library is rather old-fashioned and filled with classical children's literature. A quick overview of the book bindings reveals that few of these could be newer than the 1960s barring a few shelves in the non-fiction section. For a moment, he sees a young woman with dyed blonde hair flicker in place by one of the cabinets and then a man rounds one of the bookcases, carrying some sort of disturbing leather-bound tome. He, at least, seems solid. "Travis? It is Travis, right?" asked the man with a smile that reveals crooked and yellowed teeth (he is the man pictured above).
Hide, the school isn't even very large. He did have a tour earlier and would theoretically know where everything is by now, anyhow.

I....the dreams..I must not be getting the sort of peaceful rest I need..who was that girl?

Travis barely makes eye contact with the man because his focus is where the girl once was..

"Oh, sorry.."

He finally meets eyes with the other gentleman.

"Yes, I am Travis, I don't believe we have been introduced yet."

His eyes shift focus back to the book the man has a few times before he gives him his focus.

The book has a depiction of some sort of flowery symbol on the cover and little else. The man gazed around the library with a look of blissful contentment on his face as he paced back and forth. "Call me Vincent. I was just dropping by to take a look around at the library. It has all of my favourite books from my childhood." He clasped his hands over his heart with all the flair of an obvious drama queen. "In fact, speaking of favourite books ... I heard that you went to visit Walter Desmond the other day. It's nearly his thirty third birthday and almost my twenty seventh. I'd very much like to see him for a bit of nostalgic reminiscence but it seems he's a little incommunicado at the moment. I don't suppose you could help?"

What, how does he know?

Travis steps backwards a few feet at the mention of Walter's name.

"I..I..thought you worked here. How did you know where me and Emily were last night? Were you at the book signing too?"

Though he attempts to have a calm exterior he can't help but have a trembling in his left foot.

"What do you mean exactly about Walter?"

"We knew each other," said Vincent. "He was an old friend of the family, you might say. But why?" He spreads out his hands as he approaches, his demeanour growing predatory. One of his pupils is more dilated than the other which gives his face a further disturbing cast as he stops a bare foot away. "You seem about as skittish as a church mouse... You look like you've seen a ghost... Why, oh why, are you so nervous?"

Re: Travis' Journey: Realisation

Travis' body seems to grow smaller as his posture becomes more withdrawn and tense from the presence of the other man. Somehow the approach and posturing of the man makes him recall the insecurities around other kids and his father growing up. He could never fight back, rather he tried to be as non threatening as possible, weak and pitiful to his tormenetors.

"I just..what happened to Walter?..you can't get a hold of him? Where is he and Emily?.

"You don't get it, do you?" He chuckled mirthlessly. "Those are answers I've been seeking from you. If I knew what had happened, I would have no need of asking you." He whips away on the last few words, raising his hands and then slapping them against his thighs dramatically. "Well, since you obviously know nothing I suppose I might as well leave. Except..." He gazes back at Travis over his shoulder, then turns and steps closer to him again. "Except you do know something, don't you? Where did you last see them, little man?"

"Emily, was afraid..of someone an older woman, I don't know her name. She attacked Walter outside the book store. We tried to take him to the hospital, but he wouldn't let us, he was afraid of going there. So, we went back to his hotel and Emily wanted me to leave for my own good. I wanted to stay and I should have..we should have called the police, I knew something bad would happen.."

Travis can't discern anything about this strangely dramatic man - only that there is an intensity and importance to the way he moves, but that could all be smoke and mirrors. A facade to keep him confounded. Who could tell? He'd only just met the man.

"Well, where was it? Describe it!" snapped Vincent imperiously.

Travis attempts to regain his composure before he answers.

"I believe we both want to help, Walter. I know I do and I want to continue doing so. It was the hotel by the lame, Lakeview or Lakeside, something to that effect. He was very incoherent throughout the night.."

Travis motions with his hand towards the library door.

"I believe Principal Ross was going to call Emily because she wasn't in today. She was also the last one with him that I k kw of, so she may know something.

"You know what? I like you. You may be right." Vincent sighed. "I'm unsure of what you could do to help, though... Hmm, perhaps you could go back to the hotel? See if they're in that room and, if not, find out why? After everything that's happened, he might be a tad cautious around a local like myself. If he's not there, come and meet me at the Historical Society on Nathan Avenue. We'll talk more there." With that, he opens the door and heads out into the corridor.

Why would Walter be cautious if they grew up together? I guess that may not necessarily mean that they are friends..

Travis can't help but still feel uneasy by the presence of Vincent and how he knew where to find him and where he had been. Still, he might be the only hope of finding Walter and Emily if they have indeed gone missing.

I have to finish my commitment to this school before I leave. What kind of books can I find here?

Travis will look through the selection of books for any in regards to fairy tales, books about emotions and although it is an elementary school library anything on the history of Silent Hill as well.

There are a number of Enyd Blyton books such as the Magic Faraway Tree and other delicious tales though nothing that would work for Pre-K children, really. Plenty of fairy-tale and emotion-driven fare here though not much in the way of psychology texts. There are, however, a number of books either on the region or local history novels penned by this or that local individual. They're in the non-fiction section for History but he can't find anything that looks all that juicy from a cursory inspection. He'll need to go through them one by one if he hopes to find anything.

OOC,may my character make extended rolls if he takes the time to stay in the library?

I'd like to get a copy of The Giving Tree for my classroom, it was my favorite book as a young child.

Travis looks up and realizes it is time to head back to cover the receptionist desk, he will return later when he has more time during the lunch break.

Travis finds its dead quiet at the reception desk. No phone calls. No visitors. Nothing. He's pretty much left to prepare his school plan, muse, and think about things. It takes a staggering amount of time, or so it feels, for the clock to inch toward lunchtime. Finally, the clocktower tolls and he is freed to do as he wishes for 45 minutes.
Hide,Yes, he may. 1 roll per hour (or close enough). You can still research the town history by grabbing random books and will learn something from it - it just won't be as juicy as with a successful Library Use roll but may still be insightful.

Both Emily and Walter came to this school..I wonder what kind of tales they read as they grew up.

Travis will take the entire lunch hour to look up books in regards to History, fairy tales, any notes children may have left behind in order to get a better sense of the nearly missionary philosophy of this school.

Travis searches through the library, deciding to start over and take a look around first, to get a really good vibe for the library set up. It's not a big library, after all, so it's worth-while checking out all of the different topics they have here. It's while he's looking over the Natural Sciences shelf that he notices a book has fallen down behind all of the other shelves and is lying on its side, slightly squished behind all of the others. He reaches back there and tries to wriggle out the book but the book case, contrary to all expectations considering its size, tilts suddenly overhead and comes crashing down. The wood crashes against his head, sending his ears ringing, even as the book case dumps books all over him. At least he can access that odd-looking leather-bound book now.

It takes quite some time to recover from the shock of the shelf hitting him. He was always easily bruised and had little to no pain tolerance, even a scraped knee could bleed for quite a while and he'd complain for days afterwards. Even as an adult it was difficult to hold back tears in situations like these.

I don't deserve to be here; I've done more harm than good , already

He focuses on trying upright the shelf and reorganize the books before he can concentrate on the book that interests him.

Travis lifts up the bookcase with surprising easeand makes significant headway in re-stocking the shelves before turning his attention to the rather slim book. It couldn't have more than 50 pages inside of it, if that. It has a simple cover with an even simpler title: Toluca. A faint sense of unease settles over Travis as he regards the book. An intuitive feeling that he should just leave that book alone and get out of the library now.

Re: Travis' Journey: Realisation

Travis examines the book, the front and back without opening it. Old books always fascinated him but the words of his overly religious grandfather seemed to call to him "the only book you need in life is the book of the Lord!.

Why after all these years should I think of him now? Still, perhaps Toluca refers to the prison Emily spoke of?

Travis continues to take in the texture of the book and it's leather has an appealing feel to it.

I am not censoring the children from literature, but perhaps a book such as this isn't age appropriate for elementary school students...

He takes the book and puts it in his hand bag..

Perhaps later, but I need to get back to the from desk and check in with Mr. Ross about Emily..

Travis turns to leave the library hoping it's not too much of a disaster after he was done.

The lunch break was long enough to put most of the books away in their proper place and to pile away the rest. It doesn't take long to pass through the couple dreary corridors with their noticeboards covered in announcements, good behaviour advertising, and children's art to reach the reception desk. Principal Ross is tilted back in his chair with his feet up on the table and a book in his hand. He slams upright, suddenly noticing Travis, and makes a motion to hide the book, before thinking better of it and putting it on the table. "Mr. Yates?"

Travis decides to not take the blunt tone of the principal personally.

It's a long day and he doesn't get to leave until around 4:30PM, by which point his stomach is growling at him with hunger. His car is precisely where he left it but he finds that the passenger side door is unlocked. Did he leave it unlocked when he parked it here?

Hmm...I usually lock my door..

Calvin was a child who enjoyed exploring at at an early age. When they were six Calvin played doctor on Travis' body and had Travis play with his. Lock the door, so your dad doesn't find us... that sounded good in theory but it back fired when dad tried the door knob and kicked the door in when he discovered it locked and he proceeded to beat them both.

When Travis was 12 he locked his step sister in her room with him or rather he locked his step mother out. None of her dolls survived that episode as Travis cut all their heads off with a pair of scissors. Let me cut your hair pretty and short... but before he could his step mother got the door open and had him sent away back to his mother's house..

"I always lock the door.."

Travis will open his car door and search around with a sense of paranoia.

He pulls out from in front of Andy's Book Store and begins the quiet drive down to the Lakeview Hotel. It's still a lovely warm day and the lake, as he drives over the bridge, is absolutely dazzling in the late afternoon sun. He can make out the Lakeview Hotel quite easily as he heads down along Nathan Avenue. The beautiful building seeming a calm bastion amidst all the pine trees, hills, and large tumbled rocks that sit here, there, and everywhere amongst the odd residential home that pops up here and there along Nathan Avenue. It takes seemingly no time at all before he's pulled up in front of the Lakeview Hotel.

Walter was right, the lake is beautiful, it reminds me of a bronze mirror.

Travis will enter the hotel and head towards the hotel room they were held up in last night.

The book..and that man, Vincent perhaps Emily and Walter will know something.

In desperation Travis will pound his fist against the door one more time.

"Walter, Emily?! It's me, Travis!"
They aren't okay...I should have stayed but then maybe I would be in danger now too.

Travis will head towards the front desk to inquire about whether anyone has seen his missing friends.

How does she know me? Maybe Walter and Emily told the hotel workers I might stop by?

The woman returns a few moments later and cheerfully produces and hands over a light pink envelope which smells vaguely of strawberry scent. There aren't any seats in the lobby but he does recall seeing door signs for the cafe and the restaurant -- even a sign that pointed down to a bar -- and he could go and sit in one of them to read his letter. Or he could stand. The envelope feels quite light-weight. There's probably only a single sheet inside. His name has been written upon the letter with a flowery, yet precise, script with the easy strokes of a fountain pen.

I can't be seen in a bar...

The thought of a bar disturbs Travis, so he decides to open the door to the cafe, orders a cup of coffee and will sit down to read the letter.

The coffee culture is alive and well in Silent Hill. There are so many different types of coffee - from the beans themselves to the style it's made to the design lovingly created upon the foam. The price is indicative of the coffee culture, as well. It's not particularly cheap, but then, what is in a resort town?

At least the cafe is reasonably quiet at this time of the evening as most of the patrons would be in the restaurant, in the bar, or elsewhere in town.

The letter begins quite simply:

Dearest Travis,

You may be wondering where I have gone. Well, it is both a short story and a long story. The long story involves a long, romantic evening whereby your exit from our humble hotel room inspired a night of sweet vulnerability and passion. My darling Walter came forth from the bathroom, feeling much refreshed, and took me in his arms and explained how deeply all of my inspired fiction so touched his heart and thusly he ravished me upon each and every surface of that sweet hotel room. We lazed in each other's arms and spoke and made love and drank wine and watched the dawn sun rise sweetly over the shimmering Lake Toluca and then he ravished me once more. We decided, from then on, that I would run away with him to Auckland so that we can be together forever.

The short story involves me being dead, you worthless piece of shit.

Farewell, dearest Travis.

Remember me fondly.

Isobel Emily Latham.

I had no chance to begin with....but why? Why, would they kill themselves if they were so happy together?

Travis takes the letter and crumples it between his hand. The scent of synthetic strawberry is almost sickening to him and his sensibilites..

Faker than than the cheap perfume...But how could she write to me if she were dead as she claims? Is it a suicide note?

Travis fights every urge to throw the letter in the garbage, tear it up or burn it, it might be needed in an investigation after all should they turn up dead.

Vincent..perhaps he found something..Though I have no idea where the historical society may be.

Travis wipes away a tear that has formed at the corner of his eye and will head to the main desk to ask for directions to the Historical Society.

"Oh, the Historical Society is just down Nathan Avenue. If you keep following this road, you can't miss it. It's signposted just for that purpose. However..." She goes over to the rack and plucks out a brochure. "We do have some lovely brochures if you'd like to take a look at anything around town. The Society is just one tourist destination among many. Have you visited Lakeside Amusement Park yet? It really is lovely there this time of year." Her smile is as false as her alleged good cheer. "Just let me know if you want to know anything about the places in town."

After taking the brochure Travis will follow the woman's directions towards the Historical Society.

Travis heads out into his car and drives down the winding Nathan Avenue, the glittering lake over to his left, the gently rolling hills covered in pine trees rising up on his right. It's so different here. So strange. Did they kill themselves? Was it a suicide note? But why? And why can't the doctors and police be trusted in this town? Is it just paranoia or what?

Perhaps Calvin would know what to do? At the very least, he would've been able to protect him.

Image

The Historical Society is a large one-storey weatherboard building with a big green sign advertising its presence that is nailed to the side of its ornate double doors. There's a gravel car park just outside. As it's past 5:00PM it should be closed to visitors but there's a green pick up parked outside that suggests someone might still be in there. Maybe, since this is a resort town, he'll get lucky and it'll still be open.

I should have called him like I said I would....

The sense of security Calvin provided was now missing in his life. Sure it wasn't always a positive sense of security, but he was at least predictable and was a known danger rather than being unknown.

The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know..

Travis closes the door to the car behind him and locks it.

Maybe this time I can keep them out...(who?) I am not sure.

He remembers to grab his bag, walks up to the door of the Historical Society, breathes deeply and attempts to open the door.

The door opens easily beneath his hand, revealing a simple room with a counter right by the front doors. Many paintings hang on the walls of the museum, some of which show landmarks of the once-famous town. Some pieces also refer to the dark practices that have taken place within Silent Hill. The counter is partially wood, mostly glass display cabinet, with a cash register and telephone on the wooden part beside a bookmark rack with personalised bookmarks with local tourist destinations stamped on them. There's a small book case against one wall filled with purchasable texts (obviously cheaply printed) beside a poster rack filled with prints taken of the priced portraits that adorn the wallpapered walls.
Sorry, turns out it IS two storey. Or at least has a peaked attic.

Saturn Devouring his Children.....The Dance of Death..Paradise Lost..All the paintings here envoke some of the same perspectives of the great masters of painting..

To some extent Travis is repulsed while also overcome by the detail on some of the paintings hanging from the wall. He gravitates towards them first and examines each painting one by one.

Each painting seems to draw him in, fusing his attention to the loving strokes of paint, so that when the internal doors shuts he's snapped roughly from his reverie by a rather narrow-faced bird-like woman in a pair of overalls. "Oh, sorry, but we're closed," said the woman with a yawn.

Travis comes back to reality for a moment after gazing into the paintings.

"Oh, I apologize, I was supposed to meet a man by the name of, Vincent here this afternoon. We were looking for our friend Emily Latham. I believe she works here or is a member of your organization."

"Oh, Emily? Yes! Yes, she is. She volunteers here, you know, helps write a few of the books to make sure our history is captured for all the ages!" The woman gives a thin-lipped smile. "At least, that's the party line. I'm sorry, I was just sorting through some bric-et-brac, but if you're here waiting for Vincent then you might as well stick around. I don't mind so much if you want to take a look about the place. So, how do you know Vincent?"

"Oh, we met earlier today, at Midwich Elementary, he stopped by to see how Emily was doing as she is a shared friend of ours."

Travis continues to take in the surroundings of the building.

"I would love to take a look around, I decided to go into Early Chilhood in college, but history always fascinated me."

There's a set of double doors opposite the ones you came in through and there are also two doors against the wall with the counter. One stands just behind the counter, the other right next to it. This woman had come out from the door behind the counter.

"I didn't know Vincent had much to do with Emily but he's always been a mystery, that man. Still, he's a pillar of our community and has financially supported our society for years as his father did before him - God bless him."

Travis notices that a lot of the paintings in this room are dated from the 1970s and most of them seem to have been made by the same man. Most of the good ones, anyway.

"Well, if you ever decide to move to Silent Hill, you could always volunteer with the society. We need more upstanding citizens to comb through history with us and, well, we could use some new blood to give us a fresh perspective. It's a resort town but, sadly, we don't get many folks coming in here."

"That may be a good idea, infact I just moved here in order to work at Midwich. That's how Emily and I became associates. I was planning on volunteering at the hospital as well, but would love to find the time to do this as well."

Travis will look for the name of the artist on the paintings that capture his interest.

"That's great to hear. Well, if you'll excuse me, I've still got some rather delicate letters to sort through. Feel free to take a look around but, please, try not to touch anything that's fragile." The woman pauses for a moment. "Unless there's anything else?"

"No, that's fine. Though I do find these paintings oddly enthralling."

There's some prison memorabilia in the glass cabinets of manacles, heavy iron balls complete with chain, menu plans, and other such items.

"Well, yes, we do. We don't have a micro-fiche or anything like that, though. Would you like to do some 'light' reading while you're waiting for Vincent?"

"Of course, come with me." She leads him through the door by the counter into a large room piled high with boxes, crates, and suitcases. There's even a row of spears leaned up against the wall beside a rather uncomfortable looking steel chair. "The newspapers are over there." She pointed at a row of boxes. "Be careful with them. They're fragile. And the boxes are heavy."

Re: Travis' Journey: Realisation

I always had someone move my boxes for a reason...

"I'll be careful as I wouldn't want to damage anything"

Travis will attempt to be cautious as possible and will look through the boxes that are the easiest to reach and seem the lightest. He will look for anything related to daily living, major events in the town's history, etc.
Hint,transition to historical short story?

Pouring over he microfilm, Travis' eyes fall on the tragic story of the Park family. Typical of the time(1915) when the father passes away financial hardship followed and in a conservative family such as Silent Hill the family became outsiders.

Not so unlike today really..how many parents kill themselves and their children when they can no longer be capable caregivers..?

Taking out his note book, Travis continues to read...

A sense of mourning overcame Travis as he finished reading the news paper clippings of the drowning of these unfortunate children at the hands of their own mother.

I wonder how long the grip of tragedy has had it's hold over this community?

He puts away the microfilm for the time being and finishes taking his notes.

"Ahem," comes a pointed cough from behind him. When he looks back, he sees Vincent leaning against the door frame with a scowl across his face. "I'm not sure what this has to do with Ms. Latham and Walter but don't you think you have something better you could do?" He quirks an eyebrow, then throws out his hands dramatically, "Oh wait!" Then he pinches the bridge of his nose, "No, don't tell me. I think I've figured it out." Vincent gives him a withering glare. "You've already found them."

What's this guy's problem? I hardly even know these people...

Travis stands up from his seat and despite feeling otherwise years of being apologetic havce created patterns that are difficult for him to break.

"I am sorry, I was just looking through these archives of newspapers while I waited for you."

He closes his note book and puts it inside of his bag.

"I haven't heard from either Emily or Walter. The receptionist at the front desk told me she hadn't seen them for some time and she handed me this note from Emily."

His head hangs rather low as he pulls it out from his pocket, it's almost as though he feels like he is to blame for the unfortunate turn of events.

"It says they've killed themselves.."

Vincent pinches the note between thumb and forefinger and his gaze flicks idly across it, before he scrunches it up and puts it back into his pocket. "Interesting. It's not even in their handwriting...." He shakes his head. "Most basic trick in the handbook, you're really going to have to get smarter than that if you want to find them before something truly horrible happens to them. After all, we are moving on borrowed time, all of us, before something wicked this way comes. Now, tell me, did you try to break into the room? No, of course you didn't. I can see by the look on your face. Go back there and try to find them this time. You'll have better luck than I will." He mutters something under his breath, "Silent Hill will respond to you."

Im a freaking preschool teacher not a master in breaking and entering. What exactly does this person expect? Respond?

Travis shifts his line of sight away from Vincent as he responds.

"Well, the receptionist told me that a woman that fits Emily's description gave her the note and instructed her to give it to me..I am not sure what exactly you mean by something wicked or especially that 'Silent Hill will respond to me'.

His eyes go from trying to avoid Vincent to looking at him directly in his eyes.

He shakes his head. "Maybe you're right. Maybe you're not the one for this."

He flaps his hand dismissively. "Fly away home, birdie. See if you can find some courage there."

"I'm a little busy trying to keep two people from dying but I suppose that's a little too beyond you to understand."

At that, he turns and starts for the door.

Emily..she's alive and I suppose Walter is too..

Again the ringing of the phone bothers him, this constant intrusion by others gave him a certain sense anxiety.

The school...why would they be bothering me at this hour? I'd rather not have to speak to them, but it could be Mr. Ross and I have heard from Emily so..

"Yes, Mr. Ross, actually she is at the Lakeview Hotel, I just talked to her right before you called. It was hard to make out what she was saying, but it sounded like they were trapped inside of the room. It's funny..I went to their hotel earlier today and knocked on the door, but no one responded. Ross paused, breathing an internal sigh of relief that Emily had at least been contacted. "Something doesn't seem right Travis, I couldn't even reach her cell phone. Travis can't help but feel somewhat of a cynical and dismissive tone to Vincent's voice as the other mand leaves the building. Quietly Travis will collect his belongings and head towards his car to drive over to the hotel.

Travis pulls up in the car park behind Lakeview Hotel which largely faces away from the hills and towards Lake Toluca. The lake looks so dark from what he can see. There's no sign of the glittering city lights from across the water. The hotel, though, is lit up. Its curtained windows near glowing from the electric light. As he gets out of his car, he notices Principal Ross sitting in a car not far from his. He also notices, though he didn't think to look last time, Emily's car parked just where they'd left it. So maybe they hadn't ever left. The night is dark and quiet with only the faint sound of insects to keep him company as he looked around himself. He was getting a bad feeling about this....

Seeing Travis pull up, Ross stepped out of his car. He locked it up and walked quickly over to Travis' car turning his coat up against the wind and stood by the driver's door with a casual wave of greeting. He looks concerned, but pleased to see Travis...

He certainly is timely...I could have sworn no one was there when I came last..The woman at the counter said it was Emily..What's going on here?

Travis grabs his bag and phone before he gets out of the car and this time he makes certain to lock it.

"Mr. Ross I came as soon as we got done speaking, I didn't mean to make you wait. We should go quickly."

He turns to walk towads the entrance the three of them had used earlier the previous night...

The hotel foyer is wide and expansive with two flights of steps heading up to the 2nd floor. There's a gift shop (closed) and a reception desk with a rather plain looking woman sitting behind the counter, likely playing solitaire until the end of her shift (which is likely to be soon). She seems rather bored as she looks up at the sound of your shoes rat-tatting against the tiled floor.

"How can I help you?" she asked.

Ross glanced at Travis, then turned to the clerk,"good afternoon, I wonder if you can help us please. We were looking for a member of my staff, a Ms. Latham who is currently staying with you. Could you ring up to her room and let her know that we are here now."

Ross frowned, but she easily could have checked into the hotel by a different name or staying with someone else...that author she was so excited about, what was he called???.... He smiles pleasantly to the receptionist, "I must have mixed up the arrival times. No bother, I'll give her a call".

He tapped Travis on the elbow and moved out of earshot from the receptionist, making a show of taking out his cell phone and scrolling through his contacts until she loses interest in them. Then he whispered fiercely, "What the hell is going on Travis? You definitely think she is here somewhere?"

Well, of course Emily wouldn't have checked into a hotel when she has her own home....This is the man who will reform the Silent Hill school district?

Travis will attempt to maintain a cordgial affect when responding.

"Well, I don't believe Emily ever booked a room here, but Walter did and he's on the third floor."

"Perhaps we should just go straight on up then." The Ross replied, looking a little out of his comfort zone.

OOC - Well she might have checked in for something extra-curricular ;) Sorry for my lack of common sense, just getting a grip of the game at the moment.

Travis will turn towards the stairwell and will walk towards them as talking.

"I think it will be okay. Emily knows I'm coming, I just hope we can reach them in time. She seemed afraid as though cornered by someone.."

There's a pair of stairs that rise majestically to the second floor and it doesn't take them long to reach the doors and head into the corridor. The trouble is that their room was on the third floor, if Travis remembered rightly. So they had to follow the corridor along to the main, more minor, stairwell, and head up that. There's a couple making out in a doorway, making rather noisy kisses in between making cutesy comments in baby talk. If they keep on like that, they'll soon have a real baby.

It doesn't take them very long to find the door to the hotel room. A cursory inspection finds that the door is, indeed, locked. The carpet beneath the door seems vaguely water-stained, but not recently.

Ross stays hard on Travis' heels, committing the route back to the reception to memory.

Seeing Travis hesitate, Ross moved and rapped smartly on the door.

OOC - If he gets no response, he attempts to pound harder; peer in the keyhole (if there is one) and call out to Emily.

There's no response to his rap on the door so he tries his hardest to draw the attention of whoever's inside.

Unfortunately, there's no peep hole, though he'd be unlikely to see inside without the right tool even if there was one.

Travis doesn't quite take the same approach as Principal Ross. He was here not that long ago confronted with the same situation. Really he had been here many times before...but usually those other times were much louder.

Mommy? Are you having a bad dream? Open the door!!

As quickly as that thought came it left.

She..they were here. She called me..they were trapped..

"Mr. Ross they were apparentley trapped inside. Im not sure if they can make it to the door or not.

Why would she be able to call from her phone if that were the case?

Having considered this Travis will pull out his own phone and attempt to call Emily.

Travis' phone rings thrice before someone picks up and he can groggily hear a familiar woman's voice murmur, as though from all those years ago. "Hello?"

Mother?

If he checks the number, he seems to have been re-directed from Emily's phone to another local home phone line.

It can't be...It's been years..she never accepted myself or Calvin..

Travis' hands trembeled at the voice of his mother, a simple 'hello' shouldn't have so much power but at once he felt vulnerable and infuriated. It took a tremendous amount of will to resist hanging up the phone and in the end he was unable to..

"Mommy? It's me, Travis.."

Ross took Travis by a shoulder, "hey are you okay? Did you get through to Emily?" He looks concerned...

"Travis? Is that really you? It's been so long." His mother's voice is strained, croaking. She must've overhead Ross' voice because she harshly adds, "Is there a man there? One of your...." Travis can almost hear her shudder.

"Travis, you have to help me. Some strange men came looking for me...."

"Travis, what sort of trouble have you gotten yourself into? Why did you get me involved?"

"They've taken me somewhere. I ... I don't know where. A hospital but ... there's pills."

"Why aren't there pills for you, Travis?"

"I wouldn't be here if there were pills to stop you doing whoever it is you're doing...."

Travis couldn't reply at first..

It seems like I just said my farewells to her right before I moved to Silent Hill. I did, didn't I? I knew I shouldn't have left now she's hurt again..she always needed me to protect her. We protected eachother. Whoever I am doing? I have only had one relationship ever....

Despite being apprehensive Travis eventually replied.

Momma? I'm sorry, I don't know who is coming for you..I thought you'd be safe even when I left. Calvin said he'd watch out for you. We don't need medication though. We have to confront our problems ourselves, not mask them behind drugs...Don't worry I'll be there for you..

As Travis said that he realized that he was trying to save his new friends now instead. He thought back to his childhood and how when the rare opprutunity arose that he could choose between his friends and his family that he would always choose his friends. His mother never did let him make that choice without shame.

"Come on Travis, we need to know if Emily's safe...you want to try the number again? If not just punch it in and hand it over." The big Principal gave Travis a reassuring pat on the arm.

Travis' eyes never meet Principal Ross' as he hands over the phone for him to attempt to call Emily.

"What is she doing here...?"

He mutters to himself as he contemplates the rather unnerving conversation he unintentionally had with his mother.

Brookhaven...Wasn't I going to volunteer there anyway?

Ross, shoots Travis a cautionary look and holds his breath in anticipation....Something is not right at all, Travis is on edge and Emily should have answered, Sweat prickles his forehead, the tension is palpable.

The door opens silently to reveal a gloomy room. The curtains have been pulled shut, but there appears to be two shapes beneath the mattress as though two figures were sleeping peacefully in each other's arms. An attempt to switch on the overhead lights causes a hiss and pop as the lightbulb shatters.

The room is largely empty except for a pair of fluffy handcuffs and a pack of unopened condoms that lay on the floor.

The wardrobe contains a couple suitcases.

There's a large, bulge behind some of the wallpaper that ranges from almost the ceiling down to the floor.

The television set is playing static.

The shapes under the blanket are eerily still. There's no hair or any other body part visible beneath the blankets but the shape is approximately right.

As he reaches for the blankets, splotches of crimson blood appear around where the shapes' chests would be, slowly staining the blankets in a roughly circular fashion before his very eyes. The door slams shut, startling him, and dividing him from Travis who was still standing mostly in the hallway, grasping the door knob in one hand. Travis spots a woman in a black widow's veil standing at the end of the hallway before she turns to leave.
Show,Ross can head into his own thread now.

Travis will briefly attempt to pull back on the handle to open the door, but if that meets with failure he will turn towards the direction of the veiled woman and will follow her through the hallways.

The door is stuck, much as he suspected, so he races off down the hallway after the veiled woman, catching up with her midway down the next corridor. She turns to regard him with a stern eye, "Yes?"
