Arrival

Winchcombe, Gloucestershire.
Wednesday, 8th May, 1941.
Jimmy Walker has recently left the short-term dormitory / clearing house near Stepney where the various Wardens had clucked over the poor parenting skills of their dead parents and how scandalous it was that so many mothers kept their children in danger rather than sending them into safety. They weren't harsh disciplinarians but they were tactless and cruel with their words. One of them even thought it funny that the schools being kept open - which was considered by them to be poor form because it encouraged kids to stay in the city - which had actually kept Jimmy alive during that raid. He'd just settled in and learned a bit more about the other lads before he was packed up and carted off to "where he should be".

Davey, on the other hand, hadn't been in the dormitory for very long at all before being whisked away. He had just arrived with his few belongings in a single trunk when the Matron had taken one look at him and sized him up accurately. "Take this one with you," she snapped. "He'll be trouble. Best drop him off in the country." Apparently he'd taken the space of another British kid who was then cheerfully held back by the Matron who apparently must've liked him.

The two boys have had to stand in the crowded compartment while their Warden sat down and knitted socks for the soldiers, nattering away to several Land Girls dressed in their smart green jumpers. Unfortunately, its not a corridor train so they're stuck in their compartment without a toilet until its time to get off. The Warden seems to think she's on a pleasant holiday and has arranged to stay at a local hotel before heading back on the following train despite, as she admits, there being trains that head back nearly right away. It has been a rather long train trip on a rather crowded train after all. If any of the boys are interested they quickly learn that the train is travelling on the Honeybourne Line which linked Cheltenham and Stratford-upon-Avon that was opened by the Great Western Railway in 1906.

Peregrine Fairweather gets to sit on his trunk while a rather severe looking woman glares around at the Land Girls and the Matron occasionally before going back to read her Enyd Blyton novel. He'd never met the other boys or their woman before. They'd come into the same compartment completely by accident.
---
Mike Taylor was sent out in the ute to receive the new shipment of orphans, as the Matron had referred to it, and he was allowed to bring Martian and Clive as a bit of a welcoming party and as a reward to Martianfor his good work in the orphanage. It's quite rare for the orphans to be able to leave the confines of that building and its lands so its quite a treat. Mike is expecting to pick up three orphans and a woman who wishes to speak to the Matron for some reason. There's enough space in the back of the ute for all the kids. The woman will have to take the passenger seat.

The three of them stand on one of two 400 ft (120 m) facing platforms, on the Down platform, in fact, with the station building behind them that is build of red brick on a plinth of blue brick that was situated on the Down platform. A verandah canopy extended from the front of the building to a covered footbridge linking the two platforms. On the Up platform on the opposite side was a passenger waiting shelter and gentleman's lavatory. The goods yard lay on the south-eastern side of the station and comprised cattle pens, a goods shed, weighbridge and 6-ton crane that neither of the children have had a chance to see before. Especially Martian who might as well have been born at the orphanage. A brick-built 31-lever signal box controlled access to the goods yard, while a 50-wagon Up refuge siding led to the rear of the Up platform which wasn't too far away from them. The station had acetylene lamps with the gas hut situated behind the weighhouse but the lights weren't on because it was daytime and even if it were nighttime the black out would keep them off. There was white paint along the edge of the platform.
---
What do you do? Also, yes, I've taken a bit of liberty with a few back stories but this is the easiest way to establish you all together.

Davey's feet ached from standing still in the cramped compartment and he was getting antsy. "This is stupid, why can't the just let me go home...or at least stay in London." Davey grumbled to himself. He didn't really like how happy that ugly little British kid got when Davey was forced to take his place, "I'll show him."

Davey scanned the compartment, skipping over the blathering women. Seeing Peregrine he scoffs, "They even make babies go all over the place - they keep moving him and he won't have no where to call home."

Finally Davey catches Jimmy's eye, "Hey, I'm Davey," he says while sticking out a grubby hand, "nice to meetcha. I'm glad it's not all old ladies and babies coming around. It'll be fun to have someone my age around - that is..." Davey eyes Jimmy carefully, "...you ain't one of them sissy school boys are you?" From his accent, Jimmy can tell that Davey is an American and from the way he talks he can tell that Davey is quite rude, but seems genuine right now.

Peregrine has never been on a train nor been amongst so many people before. His clothes make him itch; they aren't his but some cheap hand-me-downs rolled up to fit. Only his blanket, made from pure alpaca wool, is left from the fine life that Peregrine was born to but at a casual glance it just looks like a grubby rag. He looks at the older boys standing, swaying with the train, he admires their attitudes of tired bravado, young boys made old by the war. The bright graphics of the Blyton novel are a flash of colour in the drab compartment and draw Peregrine's eyes; he recognises the swirly title of Enid's name because his bedtime stories were from similar books.

Martian, Clive. I expect you to behave, remember you are here to welcome the new kids and tell'em how good is the place, how fun it is and that they must behave well, Now climb up the back ... and no shouting to the pedestrians out there.
Mike chuckled to himself as he entered the ute. although he did this ride a couple of times in the past with the late Mr. Bill and two times alone he was anxious. He himself rarely went out. Most of the times he just rode the bicycle to the hardware store but there was always something interesting in the train station. The crowd of people, the peddler's stalls, the noisy atmosphere of the elders and the adult.

Jimmy looked the younger lad up and down and shook his offered hand. "You're a Yank," he said, instantly giving away his own East End origins. "I'm Jimmy and I'm not a cissy. The sooner I get out of school the better. It's borin'".

"What are you doing here, Yank?"
he asked.

Davey smiles when his fears are squashed, "Good ta hear. My pa was a pilot - he came over here to help show you Brits a thing or two about flying, but..." his voice trailed off for a moment. It just didn't seem real that his father was gone. Davey quickly regained his composure, "But it turns out the Krauts must have known he was here, cause they got him when he was on the ground instead of the air... They musta been worried that he'd make you all too good, haha!"

Davey jerked a thumb at the ladies, "They're keepin' me here instead of letting me go home cause they say the ocean's too dangerous, but " Davey leaned in close, "I think my family is hoping the Krauts'll get me too. What bout you? Parents ditch you or are they just in a ditch?"

Davey will keep making small talk until the train arrives.

"My dad's a prisoner of war. He was captured by the Jerries in France. My mum.... my mum.... Jimmy looked away and blinked away tears. "The Jerries killed her. Bombed our house to smithereens." He looked down at the floor, feeling utterly miserable. "It just happened last week so I don't really want to talk about it."

I leave my book, A Detailed History of the Roman Empire, in the car, fearing that the grown up might yell at me if I read while I'm supposed to be welcoming the kids. I stay as close to Clive as I possibly can, I don't like crowds like this, there's too many humans here; I could get whisked away by one of them if I'm not careful. Plus I don't know these new kids, they might be mean, they might want to hit me. Of course if that did happen the grown up would scold them but I've recently found that Clive's violence deters these situations much better then scolding. I keep my eyes firmly on the ground in front of me and wait until I hear someone approach.

Clive Higgins stands on the platform near Martian and Mike. He's glad to get out of the orphanage, as he hardly ever gets to go anywhere. He's also keen to meet the new kids, hoping they'll liven things up and share his interests. He keeps watching the skies, looking for any sign of aircraft flying overhead.

He might be in luck. There's an airplane over by the horizon that seems to be flying along the horizon. There's no wailing sirens or anything like that so if it's not a crop duster than its likely to be one of ours anyway. He might be able to figure out what it is if his vision is clear.
Show,Spot Hidden to get a good look at it and Navigate to recognise what type of craft it is.

Davey chokes on a sob of his own but keeps a brave face, "I understand," he slaps Jimmy on the back, "my Pa got hit just last week too. But hey, at least you got someone left, right? Your pa will get home eventually and everything will be okay." Davey's smile cracks a little, "'Stiff upper lip' right? That's what you Brits always say... silly thing though, doesn't make any sense." Davey looks at the floor. He knows he can keep his emotions at bay for now, but tonight, when he is alone he will sing a different song.
Laraqua,Let me know when we arrive/are getting off the train. I don't want to jump into interacting with the other new kids until I'm sure we are shuffled off of the train like cattle.

The train can be seen coming down the tracks in its usual brisk manner, letting loose puffs of smoke as it goes. For those inside, they can make out another station with no sign anywhere in sight - another precaution against German parachutists. As they make their way they can see a group of Home Guard crawling about the grasses in their green uniforms, sneaking up behind a man in a tin hat leaning on a rifle who was sitting on a hay bale.

Jimmy sniffed and wiped his nose on his sleeve of his jumper. "We'll be all right. Churchill says we'll beat the Jerries and if that's what he thinks, that's good enough for me."

He looked out of the window at the approaching station. "What do you think this place will be like?" he asked, feeling a bit more chipper now he had someone to talk to.

What's that Clive, what are you looking at. Oh... the aircraft.

Peregrine feels the tempo of the train's wheels change and wonders what it means. He pushes through the throng to the window but isn't quite tall enough to see properly; all he can see are wispy clouds scudding across a blue, Spring sky.

"Yes sir. Thank you sir." I say in my usual toneless, quiet voice. I don't know what I was supposed to do with that wooden trinket; I knew it was supposed to be some kind of toy but I don't really play with toys, so its just been sitting on my dresser since he gave it to me over a week ago.

"I dunno. If it's anything like the last place it will probably be boring. But I guess it will be safe since it's out in the countryside." Davey says. The Home Guard and strange man outside the window catch his attention, "Huh... what'd you spose that's about?"

It's military and its Allied and it seems to be moving about in a fairly fancy manner which suggests that the pilot is having some fun with it. Other than that, he can't be certain as it's too far away. The train pulls into the station with a squeel of brakes, the engine chugging as it goes, and that smell of train smoke fills the air, puffed down towards the platform slightly by the wind.

"Hmm, is this it?" murmurs the woman in black, rising from her seat and pulling her suitcase down from the overhead netting. "Is this Winchcombe?" She looks around at the Land Girls who carefully avoid eye contact as though afraid of her stern gaze.

"Oh, are you after Winchcombe too?" asked the Warden, getting to her feet and pulling down the window. "Yoohoo! Is this Winchcombe Station? Quickly respond please. We don't have much time." She turns to the boys. "Get up your suitcases, just in case."

Mike orders Clive and Martian as they wait on the platform

When he spots the woman calling out he yells back
YES, THIS IS WINCHCOMBE STATION!
Mike straightened his cloth with the back of his hands and place his blue hat on his head, waiting for the woman and the new kids to step down to the platform.
Hello Mam, Mike Taylor is the name. I'm here to pick you and the new orphans. please, let me take your bags.

As the train grinds to a halt and the compartment door is swung open, Peregrine is pushed to the side. He cowers as the warden leans over him to shout of the door and the boys begin to bustle with their coats and suitcases. Afraid of being squashed by the woman's ample bosom he drops and crawls under the seat where there is more space.

"Well, here we are then," proclaims the woman loudly as she bustles up the boys and ensures they have everything on the platform. "Well, we made it one piece." She shields her eyes and gazes over at that plane. "That isn't one of Jerry's, is it?"

"We must go, Perry," said the woman in black, picking up his luggage and taking it out onto the platform. She ensures that he steps out before her.

Davey steps off the train bagless, crouches down in a fetal postition and rocks back and forth to strech out before standing up straight, "Finally some fresh air. I was dyin' in there. You can never be too sure about who is who, them krauts are sneaky. I wouldn't put it passed them to be flyin' your planes." Davey nods at the other kids before looking the older teen in the eyes,"My name's David. You can call me Davey. Are you in charge of us now? I'll be happy to get away from these stiff necked old ladies."

I take one quick glance up from the floor to look at these new comers before pushing my head back down. Not sure how to reply to Davey's remark I simply parrot the things the headmistress back home told me to say. "Hello. My names Martian. We're very happy your coming to live with us. The orphanage is a lot of fun. Just do everything the adults say and its a lot of fun." I speak in clear, short sentences. When I finish a take slow, deep breaths to calm my heartbeat and shuffle closer to Clive.

"All right, now you boys be good," said the warden with a cheerful smile. "Oh, before you go could you sign this for me just to say that the boys have been deposited in the orphanage's care?"

The older woman in black frowns at her and the other lads, and her frown only deepens when she see the ute. "Perry, you will have to sit in between us. I will not have your life risked in the back of that ... vehicle." Then she turns to regard the teenager. "You call call me Mrs. Hartley. What is your name? Your full name?"

Perry stares in astonishment as Mike shakes his hand like a grown-up. Then he follows Mrs. Hartley, as she orders, and climbs into the front seat of the ute. He looks around at the countryside, it's a lot softer and rounded than the stark plains back home and seems to match the gentle accent of the old porter as he speaks to the passengers about their luggage.

The warden gives Mike a sympathetic smile and a sidelong glance toward Mrs. Hartley as if to say 'I know the type and I feel sorry for you'. "Well, I'd best be off to see what accomodation you have here." With that, she folds up the letter of deposition and puts it in her handbag before trotting off into the railway station.

Mrs. Hartley nods curtly to him at his response and leaves Perry's large suitcase on the platform for Mike to carry and instead ensures that he is shepherded into the ute before she attempts to delicately climb him with grace and decorum and only somewhat succeeds.

Jimmy pulls himself up into the back of the vehicle and sits down where he will be able to watch the world go by. An East-end lad, he's only been out in the country a few times, so he's excited to visit again.
OOC,The "ute" is an American/Australian construct. In the UK at the time you would have lorries and vans but I'm not aware we had pick-up trucks. Given petrol rationing, a lot of horse-drawn vehicles were still being used. Chances are, something like a orphanage might have an ex-army lorry that it would use to ferry the kids around, assuming they just weren't expected to walk everywhere! :(

They drive off down Greet Road, passing the Winchcombe school on the left which is packed with evacuees and locals playing on the oval during lunchtime (the orphans have their own tutors), through the center of town whose windows are all criss crossed with sticking tape and there was bread on display at the bakery rather than cakes and biscuits (as has generally been the case over the past few years). The local police sergeant is chatting to an ARP warden and a woman in WVS uniform pushing a pram. The bus to Cheltenham trundled past them on its way.

They head on out of the main area of town through Castle Street and soon pass one set of soldiers who have set up posts around the village. There are artillery guns and Bren Gun carriers which are small open armoured vehicles with caterpillar tracks that are parked near road blocks incorporating large round concrete blocks and concrete pill boxes for machine guns which have also been built on all approach roads into the village. Thus far there had been no bombs though the local boys know that when Coventry was bombed a number of people drove down there to assist (or spectate) though as they never get to talk to the local people most of what they know is from eavesdropping on the women who run the place. Mike got to hear a bit more about that.

Just past St. Kenelm's Chapel and down Ford Road Coppice a bit is a winding dirt road that has no name down which they go. There's a big wooden fence that protects about four acres of land upon which an old convalescent home once stood before it had been turned into an orphanage in the 1920s. Before then it had apparently been some sort of farming warehouse or such-like for it is a big brick structure with very small, disapproving windows like from an office warehouse. The basement is filled with archways that connect the rooms beneath although the boys aren't meant to go down there on pain of severe punishment. There's a garage over to one side that is more or less now just a thatch roof supported on wooden poles underneath which rusting farm machinery sits. There's a hen house, a few sheep and a large vegetable garden that provides much of their food.

Jimmy looked up at the building apprehensively. It didn't look much like home to him, but then his own home didn't look much like a home anymore, not since the Germans bombed it. He thought of his mum and swiftly turned away from the others as tears pricked his eyes.

He sniffed and quickly rubbed his face. When he could trust himself to speak, he turned to Davey and said, "What do you think? Don't look very homely to me..."

Being squashed between Mrs. Hartley and Mike, with the front dashboard high above him, Perry is unable to see much and he is very glad when they pull up in front of the orphanage. He waits patiently for Mrs. Hartley to gather her skirts and disembark, and then he slides across the seat and jumps out. It isn't what he thought he was expecting. He looks across the run-down grounds to the house, its small windows seem hostile and unwelcoming. He looks at the austere and dank brickwork; in size it is like his old home in the East country but there the similarity ends and his new home looms cold and menacing even in the Spring sunlight. He can't help it: with a racking sob, Perry bursts into tears.

Mrs. Hartley gives him a dispassionate look before crouching down and dabbing at his face roughly with a handkerchief. "Now, now, you mustn't cry. You mustn't let the other boys see you like this. You must be strong."

After a few minutes of waiting, the front door opens and a woman who looks to be in her early thirties comes out and starts down the few stone steps with a gentle smile as she runs an approving eye over all of those awaiting her here. For those who have dealt with her for a fair while, she has always looked to be in her early thirties and thus is probably a well-preserved woman in her forties. She heads directly towards Mrs. Hartley and extends her name, "Maggie O'Connell. Pleasure to meet you. Mrs. Hartley, I presume?"

Mrs. Hartley gives her a quick nod. "That is correct. It's good to meet you too, Miss O'Connell. Where might I find Miss Halloran?"

"She will be down presently," says Miss O'Connell. "I'm to see you to her office."

"Thank you," says Mrs. Hartley.

Miss O'Connell turns to Mike. "Could you please take the new children down to the Assembly Hall, thank you? Miss Higgins will be along to explain the rules."

Right away Miss O'Connell.
Mike replies and turns to Martian and Clive
Well you are off to your business champs ... if you have any.
He then turns to the new trio with a smile - Jimmy, Davey and Peregrine.
Take your belongings, we are heading to the Assembly Hall.

Peregrine looks at his small trunk. He doesn't even know what's in it as his aunt had packed it for him. He keeps a firm grip on his blanket and walks up to Mike. He tugs at Mikes shirt, "Please Sir, my box it's too big to carry and I don't know where it goes or where the ass-assembelly hall is." He finishes in a rush.

They are led through a rather dinky entrance hall that is largely dominated by a set of red brick steps heading up and a wide mirror to the left of them. They are led into what was possibly a parlour or maybe a reception office which has an internal window cut out of the other wall to allow them to see into an empty office on the other side. This room is filled with decent and comfortable furniture, a few chairs, some exotic oddments on the cupboards, a large clock on the wall, and another door (not the one that leads into the office).

Miss O'Connell nods to Mrs. Hartley. "If you'll wait here with me."

"Certainly," said Mrs. Hartley.

Mike leads the others through the other door into another hallway with two doors on the left and a line of doors on the right. Both those two leftmost doors enter a large single storey room with a series of wooden pews much like a church but with a pair of chalkboards at both ends. The room smells a bit like sawdust and chutney. A queer mix of scents.

A sparrow rises up in flight from between a couple pews and flies across the room to land on the chalk holding part of the chalk boards. It sits there, bounces forward a few steps and then back a few steps, cocking its head to examine the boys in the room.

"I know" Martian says simply, not having anything to add to the conversation. He wasn't sure if Clive realized this but we weren't getting the next book in his series until at least a few years after it was out.
-If nothing else is said or done by Clive Martian continues reading in complete silence for two more hours before he finishes his book. He then closes it, stands up, and walks to the library to get another; keeping his eyes glued to the floor.

Jimmy watched the sparrow as it hopped around on its perch. He dug in his pocket to find a few crumbs from the sandwich he'd eaten earlier and held out his hand in the hope the bird would come closer.

Re: Arrival

Around ten minutes pass and then the sparrow flutters down the gap between the pews toward the doorway. Bored gazes are drawn to the movement in most cases and those boys who are interested watch it flight straight down the line as an older woman steps out into the doorway, hand snatching out to grab the bird. In a sudden cruel movement, the hand crunches bone and twists wings and the bird dies with a strange sound escaping its beak as its ribs grind together beneath her grasp.

Image

"So these are the new boys," says Mrs. Matlock with an approving smile as she tosses the lifeless bird over her shoulder and into a bin that stands by the door. She strides down the center aisle, her low heels sounding heavily against the floorboards. "You all appear to be wonderfully obedient and sweet-natured boys. I am sure there would be no problems, no difficulties, no issues, hiding within your gentle minds." Her voice is so very sincere and so very genuine though her words imply sarcasm and taunts. She pauses before them. "I am Mrs. Matlock and you are my charges." Then she continues to stand before the chalkboards.

"I aim to do my bit for King and Country through this institution in raising some of Britain's finest lads for the new era that will come after the fall of Nazi Germany. I am a true believer in Britain's greatness as I am sure you all are as well. Even an American must be able to see that Britain has shouldered this crisis well and that the tireless workers of our nation will toil to ensure our nation's continued success. As our mothers and fathers, now dearly departed, toiled in our factories and our offices and our front lines for our future, so must we toil in our own small ways to contribute to our future also. It is a small cost, an insignificant price to pay, for you to obey some small measure of rules to ensure that this institution moves along smoothly and provides minimal disruption to the greater war effort."

"Where your parents sweated to save the nation, all you must do to honour their name is to sweat for your daily bread. Where your parents fought to stem the tide of fascism, you need only fight to remember the rules and prevent yourselves from becoming a nuisance. Should you fail, you will add strain to a system that is already strained. You will make a mockery of the work of your parents and their parents before them. You will stain your family name and so stain them. After all that Britain has given, all that it has sacrificed, is it really so much to ask that you duly obey the rules so that more children may be saved from the bombs in this place of refuge? Is it really so much to ask that you treat each other with the respect that your parents have treated their colleagues with such respect? Is it so much to ask that you respect the authority of those who have charitably undertaken to provide for you and protect you with little to no recompense?"

"Or must you strike out at the hand that feeds you? Gnash your teeth like Huns and take up arms against those British citizens that toil with such insufficient staff in an effort to keep more children out of the way of bombs? Must you gunk up the works so that fewer children can be comfortably housed here and so must struggle and die in the streets of London and our other fair cities so that you may march like Nazi soldiers and play havoc where you rest? Must the blood of our nation and our nation's children mean so little to you that you behave in such an unChristian fashion, in a deliberate fashion, to damage and disrespect this institution so that you might gain some twisted, wicked glee that you are somehow above it all? Above the Christian works and the charitable needs of the more fortunate to assist the less fortunate?"

She gravely gazes upon the children to allow her words to sink in. "These are the choices that stand before you. To do your bit for your country by helping to provide for yourselves with our small garden and our small animals so that you lessen your burden upon this nation state. To accept as your lot a bitter few years in exchange for the brightness of an everlasting tomorrow. You have a grave duty. As grave as that of an Air Raid Warden or a Land Girl or the Home Guard or even the soldiers themselves to do what needs to be done and to do the right thing and to respect the laws that govern our fair nation."

"Are you willing?"

Peregrine has been watching Jimmy trying to coax the sweet little bird when the terrible woman strides in. Having been brought up to respect and love all living things he is aghast when the bird is crushed and discarded. He listens to Mrs. Matlock's speech in shock. She reminds him of a man who used to come to his Father's house for dinner. He too spoke in a similar way. And his parents used to row late in the night after the man had left. Peregrine used to hate him turning up and Peregrine decides Mrs. Matlock is a horrible woman.
"These are the choices that stand before you. To do your bit for your country by helping to provide for yourselves with our small garden and our small animals so that you lessen your burden upon this nation state." He wonders if she means for them to eat the sparrows. He is busy thinking these thoughts when she asks if he is willing.

"But we can't eat the sparrows!" He blurts out.

She pauses and looks at him in a heavy silence for a long moment before responding, "You haven't been listening at all, have you?" She sighs deeply. "Very well. You are quite young. I'm asking you to do your bit for your country by obeying the rules and not being a nuisance."

Davey looked uncomfortable during the speech, but couldn't keep quiet. "Ma'am, I may be American and maybe I don't know what all your ten-dollar words mean, but I did live on a farm and I know what living out of a field is like. If'n we do our chores to eat - we ain't a burden on no one. Britain or not. I don't see what's wrong with having fun though - I mean them Nazi kids can't have fun, that's the difference 'tween us 'n them."

Feeling like he said too much Davey sort of trailed off at the end, "Sides, I don't mean to stay here all war..."

"No, we aren't Nazis," she said with a brisk shake of her head. "There's plenty of time for you to be able to enjoy yourself outside of your learning and chore time. So long as you obey when you need to obey then you can spend your free time as it pleases you so long as it doesn't displease anyone else." She peers down at him. "Although I wouldn't recommend going into the woods at night. Stay within the boundary fence at all times or else the pigs will eat you." She smirks at him, as though daring him to disbelieve her. "Oh, and about returning to America.... Don't you think its a little wrong for a boy to get so impatient that he endangers a boat load of sailors just so as he can go home? Its a dangerous run across the Atlantic so they only do as many as is necessary and therefore don't have room for evacuees."
Mike and Martian, yes, that has happened. There's a wild pig that's attacked and eaten the odd child that the local farmers haven't managed to kill. It seems to stick close to the school.

"I never met a pig that ate nobody. Well nobody who was alive - I think they probably eat a dead person." He said hopefully.

Peregrine looks at Mrs. Matlock with wide eyes. Pigs that eat people, people that eat sparrows, maybe Mrs. Matlock is like the witch in his Russian fairy tale book; the Baba Yaga. He can't remember seeing if the orphanage had chicken legs but he decides to play safe, "Yes Mrs. Baba Ya I mean Matlock."

Mike stands in the corner, waiting for Mrs. Matlock to finish her talk with the children. He shudders when she snaps that sparrow but remains quiet and shudders again when she speaks. Mike dislikes her but respect the hand that feed him and give him a place to sleep. For many years when he was a child a whisper spread between the children that the woman was a green hag.

He tries to signal the boys to acknowledge Mrs. Matlock without saying too much by nodding them to approve her question. They do not want to upset the woman on their first day by arguing with her. She is an intimidating woman and they should keep low profile, after all, they are new to this place and information should be extracted from the other kids and not from Mrs. Matlock.

Mrs. Matlock smiles at them with a look that lights up her face and makes her seem to sweet and genuinely caring. "Oh, such cute little boys. You keep hoping that transport order will come through for you, dear, and you," she looks over at the little boy, "have nothing to fear from this sweet old witch."

"The rules are simple. They're all on the boards you'll find in the various rooms. You'll wake up at 6AM. Curfew at 8PM. No one is allowed outside after dark. No one is allowed outside the boundary fence without explicit permission. You will do what you're told when you're told to do it. You'll attend school for four hours a day. Chores for four hours. We try to integrate schooling with those chores. You will get an hour to be ready in the morning, fifteen minute morning and afternoon tea, and a half hour for lunch. That leaves you with around three hours of spare time per day that you can spend in a number of different ways: reading, sport, and outdoor play. Any questions on that?"

"Sparrows are pests," she said, turning that oh-so-sincere smile on him. "It would be unChristian of me to allow it to eat all of our grain. Besides which, has God not placed humanity above all of the animal kingdom? Do we not eat meat?" She lowers her head. "Ahh, but it would be unChristian of me to deny you such staunchly held beliefs. Since you find it unChristian to kill a bird, of course you must think the same of pigs and cows and hens and their young. Have no fear. You can relinquish your right to a meat and egg ration and instead have extra cheese with your meals." She gives him a look as though she genuinely expects him to be pleased.

The bedrooms are on the first floor (the floor above ground floor) and most of them are a series of bunk beds set up in old offices and therefore are quite pokey. The three boys are given a rather poky little room with two bunks on either side of a tall boy with two narrow wardrobes sandwhiching the door. The top of the tallboy is covered in fiction novels and the odd toy. Across the hall is a rather long near broom cupboard whose door is currently standing ajar. Mike knows that's Martians' room. He was given that room for good behaviour and as a sign of favour from the matrons here. Davey, Peregrine, Jimmy and Clive will be bunking here.

They all hear the lunch bell ring. Even Martian can hear it from his position in the book room.

The dining room is back on the ground floor on the other side of the hall. It's a rather plain and dreary place with tall, narrow windows whose glass has been removed in case of bombing. Now there's simply shutters to try to keep the heat in and the cold in - something that always fails and the room tends to get quite cold by night time. The matrons never seem to feel the cold. There's about fifty boys in here now, ranging from as young as five to as old as fourteen, and they sit on the long benches arranged around tables that can sit about twenty apiece. There are no pillars to support the ceiling. Instead the room is just ridiculously long and narrow with the odd wide archway intersecting it.

Lunch is mashed potato with a hint of cheese and a few pieces of bacon. Pretty standard ration fare. They also all get a glass of milk. Again, pretty standard as far as the schools are concerned. Peregrine has difficulty eating his meal without putting his elbows on the table because he is so small. He drinks his milk, at least it's cold. He notices that one of the boys from the train, Jimmy, doesn't have any bacon. Seems like Mrs. Matlock keeps her word. "You, you can have my bacon if you want. I don't really need it." He whispers to Jimmy across the table.

Davey follows the rules, but only barely. He runs his hands under some water and sits down next to Jimmy during lunch. "Not fair for her to take your food. And she was unchristian. There's the sound of dozens of birds taking flight outside the orphanage and flocking past the tall, narrow windows with the sound of dozens of beating wings. This happens occasionally so all of the local kids barely look up, instead they continue to murmur to each other and rapidly devour their food.

Martian doesn't look up but immediately recognizes the noise, as soon as it reaches his ears he releases a small shudder. Crows have scared him ever since he read in a book on Irish mythology that crows are servants of Morrigan, God of death, strife, and war. Crows are bad. Crows are an omen of death. Of course since he's been here there haven't been any deaths other then that pig boy.

The rest of the day passes in boring monotony as the new boys are made to wash the dishes under supervision from an older lad before being shown around the hen shed and allowed to watch the others feed and care for them. Peregrine doesn't see the lady who had brought him to the orphanage again. It looked like this was really it. This was their life here. As night began to fall, they were ushered up to their rooms and sent to bed. Unfortunately, none of them felt all that tired. Martian had his little closet room opposite one that the new boys slept in (alongside a fourth empty bed) and Mike had his own room, small but not as small as Martian's on the same corridor. Mike was allowed to roam this floor at night if he couldn't sleep although no one else could. No one was allowed to waste electricity to read or write either. Using flashlights was out of the question due to a lack of batteries.

The matrons promised that the boys would all be rostered on for fire watching duty the following night to help them get to know each other. Mike was to supervise them. While that might be dull, the British countryside promised a lot more stars than London. Unfortunately, they would have to be awake all night as there would be no shift to relieve them.

Mike was preparing his brief talk about the fire watching duty as he walked to see that everything is in place prior to the briefing. Once the little lads gathered around him he began the tour.
OK champs, This is the fire watching duty tour. You will do it at least once a week.
He says with a smile and clears his throat
As you already know, beside the fact that we are at war, fire can be erupt by accident. If this happens and if fire takes place here or in the court yard we are supposed to be the heroes that extinguish the fire. Now, how we do it you ask? Mutual help is the answer. Come with me...
He takes them to the entrance where the yard is visible.
First, we can see just next to the wood logs, there is a shallow lifted shed. Under the rain protective skin you will find sandbags since sand can choke fire. The bags are not that big and a small child can lift one if needed. Questions?

Image

He pauses for a moment, answers relevant questions and leads them to their floor.
Now in the closet next to my room and the closet next to the dinning room where the brooms, wipes and other genitor stuff is located you will find filled prepared buckets. Each one of them is covered with a leather rug. We change the water in the buckets every week and use it irrigate the garden. Beside it, on the shelf are some heavy blankets, again to choke the fire. Next to it we’ll find special gloves to avoid hand burns and leather scarves to wet in the buckets and tie around the mouth and nose.

Image

He gather them in the dining hall and continue
As for the routine - If anyone sees fire he alerts the entire place shouting “FIRE” three times as loud as he can. The children around here already know that in case of fire they get up as quickly as possible, line up and go down quickly to the yard if the fire is in the house or gather in the dining hall if the fire takes place in the yard. The already wake up children and the supervisor begin the fire extinguish routine with the sand sacks and the water if the fire is outside and the blankets and the water if the fire is in the house. By no mean you are using the blankets, only an adult is allowed to use the blankets.
If the fire goes out of control we are evacuating the house and wait for outside help.
Questions?

Peregrine stares at Mike with his big blue eyes. He clutches his own small bit of blanket close to him. It all sounds very complicated and Peregrine really hopes there won't be a fire. He's even more concerned about staying awake all night; it's never been done before.

They settle into their narrow wire-framed beds whose thin mattresses cause the steel mesh to dig into their tender skin through the mattress. The sheets are thin and threadbare. The single knitted blanket barely enough to keep out the cold. To the poor British kids, the conditions are fine but sleeping in separate beds is madness, especially on a night like tonight, and there's a strong urge to cuddle up to someone. They'll likely pass the night tossing and turning. Those used to the orphanage, or Americans used to more room, are fine with having their own bed though the conditions aren't as good as they good be. Peregrine's little body grows quite cold as the blanket itself certainly isn't enough.

Sadly enough, this isn't even a particularly cold British night. It's just cold enough.

Jimmy squirmed uncomfortably, his every move causing the bedsprings to creak and groan. On cold nights, once his Dad had gone off to fight, he and his mum had shared a bed to keep warm. Jimmy thought she probably missed his Dad and wanted the company as well. At least she wasn't like Nigel Smith's mum; as soon as his dad had gone off to the war, she'd moved some other bloke in. She'd told Nigel it was one of his uncles, but Nigel had said he could hear the 'uncle' going into his mum's bedroom once they thought Nigel was asleep.

Jimmy's stomach grumbled. He should have taken the bacon when the little kid had offered it to him earlier. He pulled the covers up to his nose and trying not to think about his mum or food, tried to get to sleep.

Peregrine wakes. He has pulled the blankets over his head but the cold wakens him. He begins to shiver and pulls his little blue blanket to his chest. His fingers are cold, his nose is cold, his toes are cold; he pulls his feet up but there is little warmth in his small body. "It's so..so...cold. I can't feel my toes anymore." Peregrine tries not to cry and stifles his sniffles but a loud gulp echoes round the quiet room.

Martian pulls himself into his normal fetal position and rolls himself in the blanket like a cocoon with just his head sticking out. It's still cold but he was well accustomed to this; so he slept as he always did, completely silent and still.

At some point during the dark of the night, there's a sharp girlish squeal from the basement below and something slams up against the wooden floorboards, knocking them briefly against the nails, in the room containing the four boys. Even Mike and Martian are roused from their sleep by the squeal and then the thump. In the moments following the thump, all is quiet.

Hmm, Ogh ... What'de .. Hmmphh ...
Mike opens his eyes ... it was damn cold and hard to sleep and now someone or something did noise. He rose up, stretching and massaging his neck for a minute. Mike stands up and goes outside to check the boy's doors. opening each door to see if anyone is missing.
Could be one of the boys or perhaps the pipes in the basement like a week ago. Better go and see ...
Mike thinks to himself.
Last thing I need is a leak over there and a partially flooded basement in the morning.
He says, grunting and takes a screwdriver and a monkey wrench just in case from the closet next to his room. If anyone of the children is awake he will order them to join him. He will need someone to shine some light with the electrical torch, someone to hold the pipes for him and someone to take dry towels if a swift work was needed. In any case moving the muscles a little bit will help to get warmer in this cold night.

The cool air is chilly. Mike rarely goes down into the basement which is actually designed like a spacious cellar with massive brick arches and a lot of sectioned off rooms but he's never had any trouble going down there before. On earlier days, he's gotten the permission of the mistresses of the house but they've become more relaxed about the rules lately and have given him more decision making ability so long as he doesn't go down to the furthest reaches of the cellar. They've never explained why but they generally don't.

Jimmy didn't know what it was but he didn't really want to go down into the cellar. He told himself not to be so soft. Back home his pals would have laughed at him.

Light the torch and mind your step. Not sure of the light is OK if it is a leak.
Mike says to Martian
Mike goes first, pulling Martian with him to light the way down. He peers into the place and looks around the walls, trying to find and feel any indication of blasted water pipes inside the walls or a minor leak.
Stay with me and don't wonder. The cellar is no a place for kids by the order of the mistresses, but so long you help me there is no problem.

Padding silently behind the others, Peregrine is strangely unafraid. For the first time in his short life he feels a thrill of excitement as adrenalin starts to filter through his veins. He finds it tricky on the stairs; feeling for the rail with one hand and balancing the towels against himself with the other.

Jimmy brings up the rear, struggling to see the steps as the torchlight is up ahead. He catches his foot on the last step and stumbles into the cellar, using a word he once heard one of his father's friends use when he skinned his knuckles trying to re-bore a cylinder on a motorbike engine.

Show, you never explained what it was for so I figured you'd just got roll-happy and I'd keep it for an attempt to repair later on. As far as you could see, the boards looked a little loose afterwards as though the force were great enough to push the bolts on three of the boards partway out. No other signs as to why. You were asleep when you heard the sounds so you don't really recognise it.
The cellar is filled with cavernous compartments with massive archways that lead from one section to the other. The twelve-foot-high ceilings have plenty of dark and dim recesses above the hooded light bulbs which could allow any manner of foul creature to lurk within their shadowy corners. Dust lays across the floor and walls and the many boxes and old furniture that are stacked here and there. There's some sort of strange print in the dirt. Mike has always seen them but never quite understood what it could be. Some sort of badger sleeping here, perhaps?

There's no sign of any spilt water in this section. The generator is inside a section to the left and it makes the regular sort of noises that suggests that everything is all right. There are pipes that run along the shadowy sections beneath the cavernous sections. Perhaps if they took a look around the sections they could find it?

The matrons really don't like being disturbed after dark. It wouldn't be a good idea to harass them for further permissions or what not and they'd likely be angry if a fire started or a lot of water damage occurred. After all, since the risk of the blitz a lot of equipment from the top floor and the small attic were placed in these cellars.
Show,Track or Natural Science for anyone but Mike.

Clive can hear the footsteps squeak on the stairs and hurrying after the noise, he soon discovers several shadowy figures down in the cellar and some strange prints on the dusty floor. The rats swarm over Clive's dropped towels as he backs away, moving towards him in a mass of little furry bodies. They run across his boots, nipping at his trousers, even leaping up to grab a hold of his tender flesh in their little teeth (1 damage). Mike's words might spur the boys into action but it also draws the rats to him as well as they surge about his legs, climbing over themselves to get at him. There has to be at least a hundred rats in here! Where did they all come from? (1 damage) Martian doesn't move from his position beside them, doubtless having wracked his brain for an appopriate option, for too long, and finds the rats surrounding him also (1 damage).

Jimmy drops the crate which drew some over but then he turns and flees away from them, running through the compartmentalised cellars, trying to find his way back, but they had turned a corner in what are essentially a number of four wide doored rooms connected to each other, and he realises he's gone the wrong way. He has an inkling that he's just taken the very worst way when suddenly there's the rasp of nails on the stone floor as something looms up about of the darkness.

Peregrine runs behind Jimmy, frightened, but his smaller legs ensures that he starts falling behind. He doesn't knowany better about which way to run.
Show,I couldn't find any swarm rules so I'm going to go with a very low amount of automatic damage per round. It seems about right for rats.

Clive remembers the way he came quite well. He grabs Martian by the hand and flees for the stairs leading back up. "This way, everyone!" he calls.
OOC,There are rules for rat packs in the bestiary in the core rulebook (page 207 in 6th edition). Each pack consists of 10 rats, and their chance to hit is 5 times the number of packs (so 50% for 100 rats). They do 1d3 damage. A successful attack on the rats will eliminate one pack (one dies and the rest run away).

Show, thanks for the tip! I didn't think of looking in the bestiary section. Those would be perfect rules for the Dishonored rats. Still I'll go with my hack in this instance simply because my hack works for an environmental hazard and you guys have fewer hit points and the night isn't over yet. It also means that numerous First Aid rolls, if successful, can undo all of the damage as you can treat each wound separately. You *can* avoid the automatic damage if you avoid the packs or make it difficult for them to hit you by staying on the move or getting your feet off the ground.
Clive rushes in the opposite direction, calling to the others, stepping on bundles of screeching bony fur as he goes. It's not far from the stairs. Just three 'rooms'.

Maritan runs up the stairs, thinking in order to drown out the pain that was shooting through him. Rats, rats are filthy creatures, I could get rat bight fever, or rabies, but only 300 people a year are reported bitten by rats, why are these rats so aggressive? Rats are only suppose to bight you when they're cornered or your sleeping. Martian screams as loud as his body allows as soon as he's upstairs.

Re: Arrival

The rats surge around the crate but don't clamber up onto it which is strange because while Mike would've hoped that it'd be easier to knock them off the higher ground and sweep them off the crate, they should have still tried to get up. Rats can most certainly climb. After a moment of surging around the bottom they start to race toward the screaming Martian.

Martian reaches the door at the top of the landing but finds that it has locked. Perhaps it automatically locked every time it shut? In which case, only Mike has the keys. Did Mike unlock it to get in here? Adrenaline rattles even Martian's calm brain.

The creature in front of Perry and Jimmy snorts from around the corner, it's bulk largely hidden behind an old sofa chair and a lamp.

Keep moving, that'll make it harder for the rats to climb onto you. Oh God I'm bleeding. That's okay Martian you'll be fine, you just have to apply pressure with a damp cloth until the bleeding ends, wrap it up in gauze or sterile white cloth, then clean it twice a day with disinfecting alcohol. Cleaning the wound is going to hurt, oh well I don't have to do it for a while. Martian thought to himself, distracting himself from the scary task he had to perform. With a deep breath Martian ran across the rats, heading for the basement window, looking for anything on the way to smash it open with. There's the thud-thud of Clive trying to force the door open but it's locked fast. He also remembers the door was built pretty solidly. Clive has nothing worth picking it with although perhaps one of the other kids do and the rats shred his legs while he searches. Martian, however, scrambles up the brick wall and pushes the window which, thankfully, are designed so that they can swivel on a horizontal pivot and slant inwards to provide better air circulation. There are no more rats coming in, and there don't appear to be rats out the other side, but it's going to be a tight fit.
Show, roll SIZE x 10. You have to roll OVER that to get a success because smaller size is best as it's actually quite low and narrow and the window glass makes that worse. If your SIZE x 10 reaches 100 than you can't make the attempt.
Peregrine would be able to get through without too much trouble, however. Jimmy and Peregrine seem safe on the crates for now, though how long before the rats remember they can climb is anyone's guess.

Mike runs to where that beast was sighted and tries to peer around in the dark, the noise of his feet drawing off half the rat swarm that go rushing toward him
Show,spot check
. Unfortunately, half of this sized group of rats is still enough to be damaging to Clive.

Jimmy spots a fallen screwdriver lying on the floor not far from their crate. The rats aren't here yet but it might be a painful experience to fetch it if they return quickly enough. Martian's cries go unheeded thus far but there is a garden that wraps around the walls of the building on this side that is lined with nicely large white stones. The Matrons will be so cross with him for smashing a window though. Mike chases after the pig through the various compartments. It keeps ahead of him, not turning or squealing, or acting particularly pig-like. It runs through an archway into one of the storage rooms in the corner before turning and eyeing him off. The archway briefly shimmered as it went through.

Mike races through the archway and ... the other children can no longer hear his footsteps. They do hear something shatter upstairs. The rats turn tail and swarm back up the walls the way they came and soon there is no sign that they were ever there. The heavy upstairs door opens and one of the Matrons' voices bellows out: "Who is down there?"

Martian can hear the woman's voice as well, but too late, he's already rocked the window.

"He went down this way to chase the pig." Peregrine leads the way back to the sofa where he and Jimmy heard the beast in the darkness. He slows down as he gets near and looks at the floor for any signs:

The cellar is dark and dusty. There's a weight to this place as though they were treading with a tomb. A strange sensation, heightened by the lack of any adults to smooth the children's fears. Perhaps this place would be better thought of as an adventure. As some great and daring deed to find their friend...

...gnawed by rats. The flesh peeled back, chewed away through a thousand nibbles. They can see it. Those who have never seen a blitzed victim still see the lipless mouth, the garish pink smile of exposed tooth roots in a blood soaked smile. No nose, but the stiff flap of cartilege, eye lids sunken in on a lack of substance as though they had eaten the eye out from under it. The clothing still mostly intact, though the limbs almost deflated within them as though the muscle were removed in chunks. The stink of blood upon the air, clear yet indistinct, as though recalled from a memory....

The image was upon their mind's eye in a moment, insistent, though they can brush it aside. A memory of a thing they haven't seen. A memory of a thing they couldn't ever expect to imagine.

Yet still the tracks are clear before the tracker. Still they can continue onward.

The footprints pass through an archway into one of the storage rooms in the corner though there is no sign of the pig nor Mike within. There's a few stacks of crates whose markings have faded with the years. They appear covered in rat droppings and there's something slick in the corner that might be pig poop. Where did Mike go? He's nowhere in sight yet the footprints clearly pass through that archway.

Martian uncharacteristically makes a loud noise as he sees his friend vanish. He looks up at the matron. "D-D-Did you see that!" He yells. He dissipated, or maybe he disintegrated, or turned invisible? "CLIVE" Martian starts yelling.

Peregrine shakes his head at the strange image that he doesn't understand. He follows Clive to the archway and gasps as the older boy suddenly disappears in a shimmer. He touches Martian on the arm shyly. "Martian, maybe it is like A-Ali Baba and he has gone into Fairy Land." He frowns, getting his fairytales rather mixed, "But he will come back a hundred years later!"

"There's no such thing as fairies," snapped Jimmy, still shaken by the image of the flesh-stripped body. He put his hand out towards the archway then stops. He didn't know what to do.

"What do you kids want to do?" He asked Martian and Peregrine.

Peregrine pouts obstinately; he rather believes what is written in a book than what a slightly older boy may say. "We should go in and rescue Cl-Clive and Mike. But we mustn't marry anyone in there; it can be dangerous."

Peregrine feels the warmth radiating from the shimmer. It feels so much more pleasant than the cold dank air in the cellar. So much more pleasant than the cold halls and bedrooms above with the horrible matrons and the sorry food. His small body aches to be embraced with warmth again; his mother's arms remembered, the eldritch romance of bedtime stories beckon. "It feels nice." He ventures.

"If we go through we might never get back, we might not even go anywhere we might just die." But Clive..... I need to help my friend. "Let's go tell the mistress what's going on, she can call the police or a scientist or something. And if that doesn't work we can go through ourselves."

Jimmy nodded. "Right, let's give that a go." He led Martin back to the door, looking out for any rats in the way. He gripped the screwdriver in his pocket; if he got to the door, he planned to use it to hammer on the door for all he was worth.

Jimmy's pretty sure that Martian's trying to get him in the wrong direction. If he's right then they'll be wasting time if they go that way. Maybe he should try to convince Martian to go the other way.

"You're leading us the wrong way," grumbled Jimmy, in response to Martin's insistent tugging. 'The stairs are this way." He pulled the younger lad back the other way.

In truth, Jimmy didn't really have a clue where he was going but he was fed up of being stuck in a damp cellar pigs, rats and possibly worse.

jimmy shook loose Martin's hand. "I'm not wrong, you are!" he snapped, thoroughly fed up of this dank dungeon, rats, pigs and all. He stomped off in the direction of where he thought the door was. "You can come with me or stay here in the dark - it's up to you!"

Re: Arrival

Martian finds himself at the foot of the stairs but as he heads up the steps and starts banging on the door, he notices that it sounds almost as though the door were absorbing the sounds of his fists, like it were made of pillow and just sucked in the sound. Even if he hollers there's the sensation that the acoustics are draining his voice at one end, though it seems to echo behind him in the vast expanse of the basement.

Jimmy can hear Martian calling out (as presumably he does) but little more. The basement seems to circle through compartment to compartment, each one seeming identical to the last, with only the odd skittering sounds of rat feet for company.

Re: Arrival

Erm..., <cough> That would be Jimmy, not Clive... </cough> ;)
Jimmy paused. He seemed to be walking around in circles. He dug his hand in his pocket and pulled out a ha'penny, which he placed carefully at the foot of the left wall of the compartment. He turned and walked away into the darkness, wondering what he would find at the next compartment.

Re: Arrival

As Jimmy is stumbling around in the near dark one of his feet nearly slides out from beneath him, releasing a horrific stench. Looking down he can see pig droppings with several brown, glistening hard oblong lengths about the size of a third of his finger.

Re: Arrival

by Philulhu
Jimmy turned and retched, his hand in front of his face to ward off the smell. He'd never felt so miserable, even when his mum had died. He didn't know where Martin had gone so he shouted into the darkness. "Martin? I don't think there's a way out of here. I'm going to follow the others - we'll be better off if we stick together - you coming with me?"

Re: Arrival

Martin can hears Jimmy's voice coming from the depths of the basement but it reverberates oddly. He'd be better off tracking his own prints and then following Jimmy's rather than trying to follow by sound alone.

Re: Arrival

Jimmy waits, listening for Martin to respond but all he can hear is a shuffling noise, the cause of which he can't determine.

"Martin?! Are you there?" he shouts into the darkness.

Re: Arrival

Martian puts his hand on the door, maybe I should just wait here, then again people don't come into the basement often I might die of thirst before someone needs to come down. And I'm pretty sure the mistress is hoping we'll die down here if they blocked the door. Bracing himself for a moment Martian yells for one of the few times in his life. "YES" He calls out to Jimmy, beginning to follow his footprints back to the doorway.

Re: Arrival

Jimmy hears Martin's muffled yelp and his hopes soar. Martin might only be a little kid but Jimmy didn't fancy going through after the others on his own. "I'm here," he shouted into the darkness, trying to guide Martin to him.

Their voices sound loud and clear down here and though it is still a little tricky to hear each other it doesn't take too long for them to regroup. The basement smells a little like burnt hair, though there's no obvious sign as to why this should be so.

Re: Arrival

Martian nods mutely.

Somewhere in the edges of the basement comes the sound of hundreds of little claws against the brickword. Rats. More rats. They don't seem close but they are most assuredly coming closer. It won't take them too long to find them. It seems almost unbelievable that the Matrons would leave them down here with all of those rats.
Garrett, sorry, I just wanted to get things moving so I briefly controlled your character. It seemed the direction you were going anyway.

Jimmy didn't delay any longer. With a tight grip on Martin's shoulder, he pushed his way through the wall, his face to one side to avoid the building heat and the sheer impossibility of what he was doing...

The two of them stumble forward into ... darkness beset only by leaping flames in an alley filled with smoke and lined with the bodies of decomposing children. The streets ahead, barely visible through the heat haze, appear to be filled with buildings that lean drunkenly into one another as though some sort of medieval parody of normal British streets. A church stands upon the street as the only unique building among many that appear so similar to one another.

Martian's posture doesn't change but he begins trembling lightly as he keeps his head down, for once in his life his mind completely blank and thoughtless. After getting his bearing for the better part of a minute he manages to croak out a throaty yell. "CLIVE!? MR. Taylor?!"

Re: Arrival

Posted: Mon Jul 29, 2013 1:20 am
by Laraqua
The alley opens up onto an empty street, all aflame and belching smoke towards a twilit sky. The streets bends left to their left and right to their right, perhaps as one part of a square or something similar. Apart from a church that appears mostly intact and without flame there are multiple homes, drunkenly teetering and poorly designed, that are being slowly and steadily consumed by fire. There is no sign of where the others have gone.

Re: Arrival

Jimmy had an ambivalent attitude to the church, finding the sermons dull and having been kicked out of Sunday school for drawing faces on the illustrations in the Bible, but he didn't know where else to turn. He remembered his mam telling him about the church being a place of sanctuary so he pulled Martin in that direction.

"There," he said shortly, nodding in the direction of the church, keeping his hand over his mouth and trying not to breathe through his nose in case he threw up.

Re: Arrival

The church doors open to reveal a dusty, ashen and brooding interior with stone walls, polished marble floors and wooden beams. The depiction of the crucifixion seems to be unusually lifelike over the pulpit - as though the artist had taken great care to depict decay. It does look rather like a carving, however, and it seems to be more the paint job that makes it seem lifelike ... though it does buzz with flies rather disturbingly. As they look about, the door opens and their three friends arrive - Clive, Peregrine and Mike. At least they're still here.

Jimmy, Martian! God, I was worried about you two. Come here, hurry.
Mike calls to the two while avoiding looking at the crucified "puppet".
Mike usher them all to the room where he sat and before anyone can speak he says with a grim voice
I think we are in trouble. I have no idea where we are but it seems the matrons have kept a secret dark place in the basement, it's like an entrance to this horrible place where a dark power lies. We must find out what is this place and what is going on over here.
He takes out the book they found and add.
There are notes over here, a diary notes that one of the matrons wrote I believe. This book have clues that will help us I guess so I must continue to read. These rooms will be our shelter for now as there are beds over here. Jimmy, you are my second, care the children when I'm reading the book. We saw a picture in the book where a group of children surround a pig like creature with long forks. I do hope it's just a picture, thought we did chase a pig in the basement. Look kids, before you arrived I failed to find an exit from this place, I hope there is something in the book, but we must find out what is going on over here. Our friends are still in the orphan house with the matrons. Now give me some time to read the book...

There were blankets in the bedrooms but there he hadn't seen much else that could be useful. The wooden pews could be moved in front of the door (or ideally piled) to form a barricade but they'd need stronger hands to do so.

Peregrine walks slowly up and down the pews, trailing his blue blanket around and having a look round and under the pews. In his, rather limited, experience of church-going one always found quite interesting objects dropped by previous church goers under the pews.

What will capturing the pig do? We need to get home! Martian thinks to himself nervously, after a moment's indecision he approaches the handyman. "Sir, maybe I could read the book for a way out while you barricade the doors, we don't know what's out there after all."

Peregrine sighs; it's nothing but a dull, dusty old church. He wanders back and plonks himself down next to Mike. His tummy rumbles and he remembers what's in his pocket. He pulls out a lime-green lolly; it's a bit fluffy already but he pops it in his mouth and sucks it loudly whilst trying to look over Mike's shoulder at the book. He is a little surprised at what he sees.

Peregrine watches Mike carefully as he stands up and hands the book to Martian. Once Mike has moved to the other pews with Clive, Perry whispers to Martian,
Martian,"Do you think Mike is turning into an Elf? His ears are pointy and he is looking quite furry."
"Would you like some?" He holds out a rather sticky but yummy looking lollipop.

With the book in hand Martian quietly moves to a corner and takes his cross legged sitting position as he begins reading. Trying to search the book for anything that might be useful to their predicament, particularly a way back home. When Perry whispers his prompt to him he merely looks up at Mike, but seeing nothing odd about him, (Spot check failed 89) he didn't respond. And when the lollipop was offered to him he merely shook his head, young Martian never cared for sweets.

While it would certainly be easier to barricade everyone in that short corridor, it would also narrow down their options of where to go if assaulted. Of course, trying to barricade this room with its high windows and broad double doors would be far more difficult. Which method will they use? At present Perry and Martian are sitting in the hall though it would be an easy matter to relocate to one of the bedrooms for a good read and barricading.

The room you have entered has a large wooden table surrounded by heavy wooden chairs upon which a number of skeletons sit dressed in various military uniforms, even though they're child-sized. The skeletons are wired together with a thick wire. They might be fake ... but a closer inspection reveals that it certainly is bone. Surely not children's bones, though? The table itself is heaped up with food of all different kinds. Biscuits and toffee and hard lollies and sweet rolls. There's even icing! There's an oven at the other end of the room that smells full of the scent of baking cookies. There are no doors from this room.

Peregrine looks at the lolly which is all covered in fluff from his pocket and puts it down on the table. "And if the skelingtons were poisoned they would be holding their tummies and feeling sick. Which they ain't. Aren't." He checks under the table for rats and then wanders over to the oven and sniffs the delightful smell. "Mike, could you open the oven and see if the buns are okay to eat or not?"

The cookies are still too warm to be comfortably carried unless they use a plate or something similar to protect their hands.
Martian's book,This is definitely a book about cruel magics with three women co-authoring their dark grimoire and including information on a history that stretches back hundreds of years of service to two mysterious figures the jealous Black Man (who seems to be another name for the Devil) and the King in Yellow aka King in Tattered Robes (who seems to be another name for Jesus Christ). It is their oath to Christ that grants them immortality and it is to Christ that they perform their stories and build fairy tales out of the ether using a location that was carved from nonreality itself. They seem to prefer to use children as actors. That's about what he's managed to glean from skimming thus far.

"I'm old enough to carry them." Says Peregrine. He uses his towel and carefully lifts the oven tray out of the oven and carries it to the table; just like he used to see his mother do. "ooh, they smell good." He bends over the tray and has a long sniff of the aromas. "I think it must be magic, Clive, like in the stories."

Jimmy finished dragging a pew across the doors and turned around to find everyone had deserted him. "Hey!" he shouted, hearing his shout echoing back to him from the high ceiling.

Concerned to find himself alone, Jimmy decided he wanted something heavier than the screwdriver to protect himself, he started looking around for a table or a chair he could break a length of timber off, to use as a club.

Jimmy:

Other than the pews and the heavy cross mounted above the pulpit, the only thing in this particular area that could be used is the pulpit. Alternatively he could head down the left or right corridor and look for a chair to shatter.

Jimmy tried pulling at some of the heavy church furniture but it had been made to last and wasn't going to break with any force he could muster. He peered carefully down the two corridors leading deeper into the church and chose the left, moving forward slowly, with screwdriver in hand.

The doors on this corridor are all explored but they might have more luck on the other side of the hall down the corridor that veers off that way. Or perhaps there might be something at the rear of the building. There didn't appear to be anything but fairytales are always full of secret passages, right? As these thoughts are considered, there's a tremendous crash of splintering wood out in the hall. The doors must have busted open.

The church doors have shattered open on their hinges with long streaks of soot extending into the room from the blackened, twisted and ember-strewn landscape beyond. Out there one can only see a dozen feet before the swirling soot obscures all vision. There are streaky prints that move further into the church and as they watch the prints seem to slowly extend and then retract like tendrils.

What ever made the prints I hope it will stay there, outside. I really don't want to see it. Come... let's go back.
Mike whispers to Jimmy
On their way back, Mike add
Listen, tell nothing to the kids. Martian must complete the book. I believe that our way out is written among the pages of this book.

Once they go down the ladder Mike says to the kids.
Must be the fire and the wind, it pressed on the outside door. Martian, we must complete the book, let's see if we can torn the book apart to half so we'll read it faster.

Jimmy follows Mike back to the room, deeply troubled by what he saw. He listens as Mike talks to Martin about what's in the book but isn't convinced that's the answer. He waits until no-one is watching and sneaks back up the ladder to explore the church.

Peregrine clambers out from under the table now that the danger has passed. As it looks like they might be leaving soon he grabs a few handfuls of toffees from the tabletop and stuffs them into his pockets whilst the older boys look through the book. "Maybe we should look for the yellow man, he might know the way home." He frowns, realising that he doesn't actually know where home is anymore, and lets out an involuntary sob.

"It's that giant pig what lives in the cellar and eats people and chased Mike. It might have come through the shimmery curtain too." Peregrine says to Jimmy. He follows Mike to see if there's a chimney. "I went up a chimney once, it made Mummy cry. I think because I got soot on the carpet."

Jimmy couldn't get down the ladder quickly enough, letting go and dropping to the floor. Stumbling away from the ladder but with his eyes glued to the hatch, he said, "Let's try the chimney first..."

Re: Arrival

The chimney is wide enough for the smallest of the children to climb up though soot would likely make its brick sides slick (Climb check despite the brickwork and narrow passage) but unfortunately the only chimney is attached to the oven and is therefore still quite warm inside. It is probably not yet safe to climb inside the oven. Perhaps after an hour or two it may be better, presuming the child could be convinced to climb into an oven in a fairy tale.

As the children ponder the situation, a symbol slowly grows like a patch of yellow mould on the wall behind them. A strange symbol of three curling lines around a central point. One of the children, however, young Perry, can't see it at all though all of the other children can (1d6 SAN loss).

"Hey! Help!" Squeals Peregrine who is obviously the smallest. He wriggles but can't escape Jimmy's grasp. The oven door is flung open and a wave of heat escapes. "It's very hot in there. I think I may cook!" He can't think why all the boys are watching a blank wall with horrified expressions; are they all going bonkers?

Re: Arrival

The chair causes cracks to appear over a section of the wall though it hasn't given in yet. It takes a little bit of scratching and digging to widen the cracks enough to remove whole chunks of wall, causing a malodorous stench to flow into this room from the room beyond. Finally they unearth the doorway, revealing a long and dark passageway with mutated skulls set into niches in the wall.
Perry, the cracks appear to be nasty slices of light that hurt his eyes. He starts to feel desperately hungry. The nape of Mike's neck has a lot of hair now, just like a dog's. Clive seems to have sprouted fur on the back of his hands.

Clive, help me; Mike's gone mad, he's turning into a mad dog!" He turns away from the wall to Clive but then looks at Clive's hands and backs away. "You too!" Perry starts to cry. Perry,The cookie is quite delicious. It certainly makes him feel a bit better. Something reassuring about freshly baked sweets that really makes small children feel better. The light isn't bright anymore now that they've destroyed that section of wall.
As they begin their walk through the musty corridor, given dim ambient light from some unknown source, the skulls begin to chitter-chatter, the jaws clacking against the upper mandibles, as though they were laughing at the children. Burned into each skull's forehead is a circle that is half filled in with char. They seem warped, changed. One has a longer nose and jaw, like a dog's muzzle. Another has a beakish aspect. A third seems oddly flat with a sloping forehead like an ape. The corridor bends into a spiral although, initially when they had entered, it had appeared to be a straight hall.

Peregrine packs some spare cookies into his pocket, picks up his blanket and follows the others through the gap; he trails them by about 20' so can't see them round the corners but can hear their voices. He stares at the rows of skulls chattering away and looks behind and around in apprehension; are the skulls laughing or warning him?

Re: Arrival

Jimmy followed the others through the gap in the wall, keeping well clear of the chattering skulls, the brick in his hand ready should he need it.

Re: Arrival

by Laraqua
Mercifully the chattering skulls don't seem to truly acknowledge their passage. They don't speak. They don't move their skulls. They just continue to snap their teeth together as the group progress, heading on a slightly downward slope, or so it appears, through the winding passage. The air steadily, yet slowly, grows warmer and more damp. Moisture gathers in their pits. Sweat runs down their backs. The air becomes thick and hard to breathe. It feels like the jungles the boys have only read about in books. It doesn't feel like England at all. Then after many minutes of walking, it's as though Mike passes over an invisible line as all of the jaws snap shut and silence reigns supreme. Further down the hall, the corridor splits in twain, forking like a serpent's tongue with both lines running into darkness.

Re: Arrival

Jimmy paused, hardly mollified by Clive's response. He was torn between the two options, not knowing what awaited them at the end of the passages. He glanced back up at the corridor of now silent skulls and shuddered. Safety in numbers seemed like the best option and he trudged on after Mike and Clive, wishing his mother was still alive, wishing she was here to tell him what to do... ...

It's a long run. Seems like they had travelled further than Mike had first thought. Finally they stumble, breathlessly, into the room with all of the treats laid out on the table. As they rush down the corridor, they seek out the forked passageway but it seems so very far away. They pass the chattering skulls and the tunnel veers off into dark silence. As they continue along the gloom deepens and thickens until they can only see in silhouettes. Where had that forked passage gone? It should be here ... right here. Or, more likely, further back up the way they came. How could they have missed it?

Unless it moved?

The lad is studiously scraping at a small stick with a knife, humming as he does so. At the sound of the door opening, he looks round at the boys thoughtfully and then stands up. "Hello." He says with a lilting voice. He's quite tall and slender, he looks about fifteen and is dressed in an old shirt and baggy trousers; his boots have seen better days. But the most obvious thing about him is his shock of unruly red hair and bright green eyes.
And then he grins, "Are you lost too?"

The red headed lad shrugs, "Well, most people call me Jack, and that's as good a name as any don't you think? A pleasure to meet you, Clive." He then looks to the bigger boy. "What, smaller than these ones here? I don't think I have; but then I haven't been here forever." He puts the stick and knife into a small satchel by his side and looks at Jimmy, "And you, sir, the silent one; do you have a name?" Jack smiles encouragingly.

Jack looks at Mike for a moment before saying, "Like you I wandered into the tunnels and got lost. It's easily done. Peregrine probably took a different turning." Jack tries a joke to cheer them all up. "He'll be okay if he's got a blanket* - warm at least. Look, why we don't we go on together? I was getting rather lonely and maybe we'll find Peregrine further on."

"So where did you come from?" Jimmy asks Jack. "We were in the orphanage and got trapped in the cellar. We... we... ah... walked through one of the cellar walls and ended up outside the church. We went inside and went into another cellar and... and we couldn't get out so we broke through a wall and into these tunnels... ..." Jimmy tails off, aware of how utterly preposterous the story sounds.

"I wonder if they'll make your belly glow in the dark." Jack breaks a mushroom off the wall and sniffs it before carefully putting it in his mouth. He chews it thoughtfully. "Maybe a bright idea - or maybe not." Then he shrugs at Clive, "Well you never learn if you don't try." He smiles.

"No, don't!" says Clive, too late. "Its not safe to eat stuff in this place, especially not mushrooms that might be poisonous. Peregrine ate some of the candy in the other room, and nothing good happened as a result." He takes one of the glowing mushrooms and holds it.

Jack munches carefully, "I do believe they're okay; certainly taste quite nice. Kind of nutty with an aniseedy aftertaste. You're missing out, I reckon." They rush forward to what appears to be a massive tower with smooth stone walls. Eight feet down is a massive clock face with ticking arms like sharpened pendulums which move with a loud tick-tick-tick through the air. A skeletal child-like figure, dressed in clothing much like them, but with a rat tail worth of bones and a pointed skull strolls in the spaces between them.

As Clive speaks, the blades move and all can see a flash of a closed and bolted trapdoor on the other side of the room at 12 o'clock. A pair of bolt cutters are hung off a hook to the right at 3 o'clock.

"Ho ho, this could be fun. Is the skellie friend or foe?" Jack watches the skeletal figure carefully. "If one of us distracts it then the others can grab the bolt cutter and make for the trap door. They'll have to open it pretty sharpish for the other fellow."

"Here Clive, take my satchel for me." Jack hands over his battered leather satchel to Clive and then focuses on the rat-thing. He rubs his palms together and looks like he's preparing to do something.
ooc,I'm not sure on the layout: where we are in relation to the clock, the tower and the skellie. Is the clock above us and centre of the room with pendulums dangling below, with the skellie walking around underneath it. The skellie on the same level as us?

"Okay," says Clive, slinging the satchel over his shoulder. "Whatcha gonna do?"

Re: Arrival

OOC,Mr. Handy is right. The corridor you're on opens up inside the tower. The clock is the floor below you which has several pendulums moving horizontally across the space at about four and a half feet high while the skeleton (which is four foot high) walks underneath it with about an inch of clearance.

Without another word, Jack reaches down and places his hands on the lip of the ledge, then slowly but surely, he raises his feet so that he's performing a perfect handstand right on the edge of the pit. With a quick flick he deftly somersaults down between the blades to land lightly on his feet in front of the parading skeleton. "Aha. Hello whiskers!" He goads it.

While Jack distracts the skeleton, Clive carefully lowers himself down the side of the pit near the three o'clock position where the bolt cutters are, but at a safe distance from the blades. Once he reaches the ground, he ducks well beneath the tops of the clock hands and goes for the cutters.

The skeleton turns with a shuddering gait in a half-circle, nearly toppling over with the sudden movement, bones cracking together, and then it turns more fully towards Jack. (You may act first).

Crouching low so as to keep underneath the razor-sharp hand, Clive rushes to grab the bolt cutters and then bring them to the trapdoor.

Re: Arrival

Posted: Wed Jul 09, 2014 6:59 am
by Laraqua
The skeleton seems easily distracted by Jack (dodge roll) and ignores the others who have to move low beneath the ticking hands when they pass overhead. Mike reaches the trapdoor readily enough but it's padlock is quite solidly attached. Clive reaches the bolt cutters without any other problem but when he tries to pick it up he realises that it's painted on (yet looked 3D from his positions while running which is a physical impossibility considering the variety of perspectives he has seen it in). Looking up, he sees that the central pole from which the hands tick past has a square hole in its side that is only visible when it passes over a corresponding hole square on his side (aligning the two holes to reveal the hollow core - the outer shell rotates, the inner shell remains still). Within that gap he can see the flash of the bolt cutters (which are surprisingly shiny) but to reach in and get them he will need to be quick (Dex x 4, Dodge roll if you fail, 1d6+2 damage and a mangled hand if you fail that roll).

Re: Arrival

Without a tool to disrupt the mechanism, others wishing to grab the key would need to try their luck reaching in to the briefly visible gap (as recall the outer shell hole moves around a stationary inner shell hole) with the possible risk of losing one's hand. While the tool can be passed from one to the other, additional attempts by other individuals will each take a little longer than a single round which would be awkward while the skeleton is mobile.
Everyone,I don't currently have access to my book and I'm having trouble finding the base skill for a small club online? If anyone reads this and has the book handy, please let me know the base skill. Otherwise I'll delete this spoiler when I get home and grab the stat.

Re: Arrival

by Laraqua
Mike misses his punch by an inch moments before the skeleton rears back and darts forward. Mike's attempt to get out of the way failsas a clock hand sweeps past overhead, forcing him to duck, but he needn't have worried because the skellie is no better in a fight and its own bony fist misses just as readily.
OOC,I'm going to make an executive decision and assume that he'll let someone else take the tool while he distracts the skellie. He's better with his fists anyway.

The trapdoor heads down quite a way past brick walls. It would almost be like climbing down a chimney considering how narrow it is. It isn't too narrow for Mike, at least, though his shoulder might brush the brickwork if he isn't careful. It's the charnel stench that comes up from the rooms below that are a problem, however. It's quite an ominous smell. There seems to be a faint reddish glow down there, though, and a slight draft of heat. The metal rungs aren't scorching hot, though, so it'll probably be all right to descend them. Heat rises so if there were a literal fire raging down there, well, no one could grasp any of the rungs to descend, could they?

They travel down the long passageway for so long that it must be a hundred stories at least (or maybe five) and the kids' arms ache a little with the careful exertion. As they reach the bottom they find themselves stepping out of an old-fashioned hearth and into a brick kitchen similar to the last one but there is an open fire over hot coals where the table used to be that charred suspiciously shaped logs whose ashen scales occasionally peel back with a blast of flame to reveal cooked meat beneath. There's an archway that leads out of this room, leading down a corridor lined with open fireplaces that sit raised a foot above the ground and give this place its unearthly heat. Upon a table lies three stones, pale like ice, and above them lay the words: "It that tames the burn."

There is no poker but there is a pair of heavy tongs half sitting in the fire and glowing red.

It's heavy, iron and looks like it would pack a wallop.

Check the coals, whenever I read spy novels, always, but always someone his something in the fireplace.
Mike says, chuckling to himself.
Let's try to burn the stones on the table with some hot coal.
Mike suggest as he inspects the stone closely. he takes one and check the weight before smashing it on the floor.
Maybe there is something inside.

"No, wait!" says Clive. "If you break it, it might not work any more. Let me try this." He picks up the tongs by the part that's not in the fire, then uses them to take hold of one of the stones, first watching to see if the stone will cool them off.

The tongs are metal unfortunately after sitting in the fire for so long and the heat has travelled up their entire length even though only the tip is red hot. It looks like they'd need some heavy duty gloves to do it that way.

Clive pulls his hand back. "It's too hot to touch," he says. "If we had some heavy gloves or a blanket or something, maybe I could grab the tongs. Or I could try touching them with one of the stones, see if it cools them off."

"Pussy foots!" Jack exclaims, "They're just rocks." He grabs three and starts to juggle them, up and up and..."Here Clive, catch!" And he throws one towards the smaller boy.

Clive instinctively reaches out to catch the other stone.
OOC,There are only three stones, and I already took one of them, so you can only juggle two. It's the fire that has us wary, not the stones.

The tongs cool substantially, becoming covered with a fine layer of frosted patterning, but it doesn't take long before they warm back up once the stone has removed, quickly glowing red hot again even though it's only been a few seconds.

Clive holds a set of tongs in his hand.

OOC: I didn't see Mike's actions earlier, but that's all right. Attempts to smash the stones by throwing them on the floor don't so much as leave a scratch.

Clive uses the tongs to pick up the stone, then grips them by the handles and extends the stone into the fire. "This ought to cool things off in here," he says. "Hey, maybe there's a secret passage in the fireplace or something!"

The fire seems to dance away from the stone, revealing that, indeed, there seems to be a hole at the other end of the hot coals that even a grown up could squeeze through. Unfortunately cooling off the flames doesn't cool off the coals so it's still too hot to move through there.

The stones will buy us a safe passage into the other side of the fireplace ... let's cool down the tongs and use them to shift the coals to the side, then put them as a wall between us and the coals.

The stone melts into the coals immediately, cooling all of the coals as though they hadn't been red hot a moment before. Even the air within that passageway now feels cool against their skin.

The stones seem to be a one-use item. This place sure is magical. The overall temperature in the area has also gone down, making it more uncomfortable than damnable hellish. It's still enough to bring out a stinky sweat in the adolescents though. The children sweat clean.

Re: Arrival

The tunnel opens out into a narrow ledge that wraps around the walls. This place makes no sense. It's like something from a story book. Something glows lightly in the hole beneath them, casting enough light to put their faces in silhouette but leaving everything more than six feet away cast into darkness. The walls themselves are carved with words but it's impossible to read them when pressed up so close to them.

"I guess we have to go around that ledge," says Clive. "They went to all the trouble to build this place, you'd think they'd have put a rail in." He shrugs. "Well, we'll just have to be careful not to fall, right?"

Re: Arrival

OOC:   The Ledge, The ledge is dangerous enough as it is narrow and slopes downwards slightly that you will need to roll on a skill to make your way around. You could attempt to Jump across and hope there's something on the other side. You could use Climb to dig your fingers into the writing as you weave your way around. Or you could just roll Dex x 5 to simply shuffle along and rely on your balance. If you fail your initial roll, you can make a Dex x 3 roll to catch the ledge with your hands rather than slip forever into oblivion.

Clive gulps when he looks down the hole. "We need a rope," he says. "Something we can tie to all of us in a line, so that anyone who slips and falls can be pulled back up. I guess we could tie belts together or something if we can't find a rope."

Re: Arrival

There's no rope on this side but there are more hot ovens on the other side of the corridor so perhaps there might be something worthwhile on that side.

"Maybe we'd better check the other side of the corridor first," says Clyde. "There are more ovens that way, and we have two stones left. There could be a rope behind one of them."

There are three hot ovens to the right, two to the left. Was that how many there were before? It seems so very hard to be sure. There seems to be a diary burning in one of the ovens. Clive is pretty sure it wasn't there before.

"That one!" shouts Clive, already running for the oven with the burning diary. He extends the tongs with one of the stones into the flames and onto the burning book to cool it off before it is further damaged.

The fire is extinguished immediately, the coals go dark, and it's easy enough to pull out the diary with the tongs. The front of it is badly charred, as are the edges, but the book falls open to two relatively pristine pages that have been written in a very precise and feminine hand that seems oddly familiar to those who have been in the orphanage long (Idea roll, please).

Clive tries to recall whose handwriting this is as he reads the diary. It seems familiar.

Re: Arrival

The diary is clearly written by one of the matrons though their handwriting is all so similar its impossible to tell which one. A quick perusal reveals the diary contains logistical details, ordinary day-by-days, with a tally in the corner that slowly ticks down. Interspersed between the other pages is a vague story told through little hand drawn pictures of a rat, an owl, a dog, and a little boy who looks rather like Perry. Later there's a picture of a tunnel with Perry walking along it alone. Finally there is a fairy arrives with wings like Tinkerbell from the illustrated version of Peter Pan. It seems to catalogue their adventures together.

"One of the matrons wrote this," says Clive. "But how could she have known what would happen to us? Or did she make it happen by writing it? Jack is Tinkerbell? I'd have rather thought he'd be Peter Pan. I wonder which one I am? Prolly the owl, because it flies. I wonder what the book says will happen next? Let's look ahead!"
OOC,Is the stone I used still intact, or did it dissolve too?

Re: Arrival

Jack points to the pictures of Perry, "That's a cute little boy, I wonder, did he get eaten by the fairy - which isn't me I can assure you: look no wings! Plus I don't eat small boys." Jack flexes his wingless shoulders. "I have to say though, Mike here looks rather like that dog and who are the rat and owl? "

They flip through the adventures of this odd ball collection of animals, through the clock face and down into a room of many ovens. There's a room with the big darkness and an owl about to jump, knowing he can fly to freedom, while the dog and the fairy look on, and there's an image of a loud "CLANG!" and then a hag appears, crawling through another cold oven toward them. She reaches out and grabs the dog by the scruff of the neck and says, in a dialogue bubble, "In you go, dinner!" and thrusts him into one of the hot ovens. The owl is so shocked that he falls off the ledge and plummets to his assumed death.

There are no other pages written or drawn.

But there is a loud CLANG that sounds from the oven from which they had withdrawn the book and whose coals now lay quiet cold to the touch.

"It's the witch," hisses Clive. "We've got to change how the book goes. Anyone got a pencil, or a crayon, or a bit of charcoal?" He looks around for something suitable.
OOC,Do I have one stone left, or two? Can I salvage a piece of charcoal from the oven where we found the book?

Re: Arrival

We must clear the stone from the oven so the coals will burn again.
Mike says with panic, he strides to the oven to grab the cold stone away.

Re: Arrival

The stone has disappeared - it must have disintegrated when it hit the coals! There is one cold stone left.

There isn't any charcoal but coal could be used in a pinch so long as you don't smudge the page. There's plenty of unburnt coal left and soot from the burnt hunks.

"Hold onto this," Clive whispers to Mike, offering him the last stone. He gathers up a bit of coal from the oven. "If you're the dog, it'll protect you from the fire. Who's good at art stuff? Draw on the blank pages after the last one. Show the dog in the oven with the stone in its mouth, with flames around it but not touching it. Then draw the witch taking a closer look and getting burned up by the flames. And draw one with the owl landing safely on something really soft, like a mountain of pillows."

Clive starts drawing what he described on the blank pages of the book following the last one with something on it. His child's mind helps shield him from the bizarre nature of this place, and he takes it largely in stride.

Re: Arrival

As he finishes his drawing, there's a loud CLANG! and the sound of scuffling hands and feet on the coals in one of the ovens whose flames have suddenly died away. As they flinch away, an enormous woman who looks like one of their teachers rears up in front of them and points a long-nailed finger at them. "You weren't meant to get this far!" She completely ignores Jack as she looks to each of them in time, then snaps forward to grab Mike and throw him into one of the fiery ovens, causing him to instinctively yelp despite himself.
