The Zero Room is a room in the TARDIS that is cut off from the rest of the universe, where you can come to relax and chat. All Out of Character discussion, whether game-related or not, can take place here.

Looking forward to this. I researched Dunwich, UK recently for a Yog-Sothothery magazine article, and it has a fascinating history. Want to go visit sometime! Should prove a very interesting location for our adventure.

What can you tell me about Dunwich and its history, since you've already done some research for an article? Thinking about some character background.

By the present day, or 1985, medieval Dunwich had largely fallen into the sea and was just a rump settlement with very few inhabitants. The quickest way to read up on its history is to look at two useful web pages:

http://www.dunwich.org.uk/history/

and

http://www.dunwichmuseum.org.uk/whathappened/index.php

It's probably best to create a character from elsewhere, perhaps someone - for example an archaeologist - with an interest in the place's history. Or someone else with a connection to UNIT, as Mr Handy asks. You could for instance be a scientist, maybe a geologist, or a marine specialist. Lots and lots of possible ideas. But probably best not a native of Dunwich :)

Very interesting stuff there. I wasn't planning on a native to the area, but I thought if it had some more recent historical relevance I might be able to work with that.

Thanks for the links, Yockenthwaite! They'll be useful to me as well as to the other players. I've done some background research myself on Dunwich to prepare for this game, but I haven't come across either of them before. I'll be sure to look through them in more detail when I have the time. The picture galleries will also have some useful images I can put in the game. I'd like to make this as authentic as possible, though the characters who live there in my game will of course be fictional.

Yes, it's probably best if you're not a native of Dunwich. If you really want to be, I can work something out, though you wouldn't start out in Dunwich. There would be obvious advantages if you have local knowledge, and it would make perfect sense that you'd be tapped by UNIT for this assigment. However, there would be disadvantages that aren't so obvious.

There is one bit of relatively recent Dunwich history that's relevant. During World War Two, 40-odd years before this adventure takes place, it was part of the "chain home system" and hosted an RDF site (radar to Americans like me).

I'd like to sign up again if I may. I'll read up on UNIT for some character ideas. Are there any limitations to character creation/occupations due to it being 1985? Which is the best sheet to use? (Just thinking ahead).

Welcome back! You should just use the Modern character sheet for 1985; people were playing modern CoC that took place in 1985 when it was 1985, after all. Most of the traditional CoC occupations will work, and there are no limitations due to the era. Common occupations in UNIT are soldiers, military officers, pilots, drivers, scientists, technicians, and researchers, though those aren't the only ones. You could also be a "friendly" (journalist Sarah Jane Smith being the prime example) associated with UNIT but not a member, which widens the possibilities.

I'm sorry I didn't have time this weekend to get anything done, and I still need to get caught up in my other games, which I haven't updated in two weeks. Next weekend is a three-day weekend for me, so I should be able to post character creation instructions then.

Brook gains 1 Sanity.

I'm sorry. :( Given my luck, it's usually better to roll things yourself. I'll roll Sanity and skill increases for the other characters as I have time.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I posted in the "players looking for game" forum and Mr. Hardy said I was welcome to join this campaign. I look forward to gaming with everyone! This is my first time playing CoC- excited to do some investigating!

I'm definitely interested in playing and am currently thinking of some character ideas. Right now I'm thinking possibly a mechanic/driver... someone has to maintain the vehicle fleets.

Welcome aboard! That can work. You'll want to check under Technician in the Your Career in U.N.I.T. thread for the occupational skills (you'd just take Drive Auto as the skill you're free to choose). I've just posted that thread recently, and it lists occupational skills for the most likely occupations. If you want something different than what's listed there, let me know what you have in mind and I'll give you a suitable list of occupational skills.

Next I'll post the character creation threads. They should appear before too long, and then you'll be able to get started building your characters.

I'm thinking a pilot. Original thought was a Medical Officer, but that's close to Caitlin Bell from the other campaign. A little variety. He's got a face like a bag of dogs. Ugly dogs. But dextrous. Here are the rolls. Will submit the full sheet once I figure the skills and such.

If you're working on character creation, you should do so in the Character Creation thread (unless you're CrackheadC., in which case you have your own thread). Feel free to ask me any questions you have about it there as well. Take your time; we probably won't be starting for a couple of weeks.

Yes, they did smell that bad. ;)

Pretty much. The tube allowed air into her mouth, so the odors could still get into her nose through the back way.

Yeah... we'll go with that, although I've never been able to smell anything through my mouth before. Air has to pass through your nasal passage in order to carry the odor particles to your smell recepticles. Maybe she's deformed.

I figure Lucius is on borrowed time. He's running out of Sanity... so he will either die, or go insane probably before this chapter is up. So I ain't a feared a' no Keeper. ;)

Really, I just hadn't thought of it when I wrote it and I was trying to find a plausible explanation after the fact, but it might be better if I just edit it.
ImpInTraining wrote:I figure Lucius is on borrowed time. He's running out of Sanity... so he will either die, or go insane probably before this chapter is up. So I ain't a feared a' no Keeper. ;)
Lucius isn't that low on Sanity. Some characters start with less than 32. When you're below 20, then you can worry. Still, his attitude is very Roman.
yockenthwaite wrote:I'm amazed Elizabeth is still alive after her gunshot between the eyes in the first game. So if she lives fine, otherwise I won't be surprised!
I'm amazed there haven't been more character deaths, but I'm pleased as well that almost everyone has made it so far. Even Edward Barrett didn't stay dead when the Mi-Go killed him, but what happened to him was far, far worse. Of course, this adventure is likely to be dangerous.

Hi everyone, I've just joined Play@ysdc and mr handy has kindly invited me to this game - looks interesting. I'm new to PbP and haven't roleplayed in over 15 years, so be gentle!
I assume I start by generating a character. Where can I get a blank character sheet? Also, any UNIT occupations which would complement the current group - I'm up for playing pretty much anyone for my first time, even a soldier grunt/cannon fodder!

Welcome aboard, Jim! Yes, character creation is the next step. The Character Creation/Rules thread has full instructions, including a link to the Quick Start rules in PDF form. However, you should use the rules for character creation in the thread itself, not those in the Quick Start rules (those rules give you less skill points than they're supposed to in the actual rules, and they impose a maximum starting skill level that is also not in the main rules and that I'm not applying). Near the end of the Quick Start rules is a blank character sheet. You can also see examples of completed character sheets in the Cast of Characters thread.

The Your Career in U.N.I.T. thread details several occupational choices and the occupational skills associated with each one (in the spoiler buttons). You're free to select whichever one you want or come up with your own. We already have a few technician/engineer-types, a pilot, and a medical officer. We don't have any straight-up soldiers, and a little extra muscle on the team wouldn't hurt. If you want a leadership position, you could create a military officer, though they're less skilled at combat and you might not want the added responsibility on your first outing. A scientist or researcher could work, and a covert operative might be useful too. Really, it's up to you what sort of character you want to play. You can build your character in the Character Creation/Rules thread, and you can also ask me any questions in that thread. I'll help you through the process.

Hi Mr Handy,
When are you planning on starting the game? I'm conscious I've not yet posted my character, so don't want to hold things up. I've actually created two characters, just as an exercise to get used to the process. I'll probably go with the Covert Ops I've created - just need to assign his skills.

Re: The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

by Mr. Handy
The earliest we'd be starting is Monday, and that's only if you and one other player finish character creation by then. There's also one other possible new player, though I haven't heard back from her yet. In addition, I'm not yet finished preparing for the game, but I should soon have enough done that I could start, finishing up the design while the game is running. However, there's a decent chance that the game won't start until late next week or possibly next weekend. Take as long as you need for character creation, as I could always use more time to prepare anyway.

I will be away from November 2-4 at a convention in New Jersey, and then I'm leaving for London on the evening of November 8 and returning late on November 18. However, I'll have more time off in the rest of the November and should be able to keep things moving then.

I managed to get the IC threads up and running early. Remember that you may only read the IC threads in which your character is present, so make sure you don't read the one that isn't meant for you. Right now there won't be much to do except introduce yourselves and interact, but I plan to start things moving over the weekend (or sooner if everyone in a particular thread has posted).

If new players decide to join, I can still arrange for them to be added in for now, but once the adventure really gets underway it would be more difficult.

Have fun! :D

Thanks! The rest of you take care as well.

It should certainly be interesting. Sometimes the dice throw a curve ball, and something completely unexpected happens that changes things up. I love it when that happens. I don't think any investigators will die just yet, but there is a small chance. I was most worried about Valerie, but with her critical success she'll be fine. I'm about to update the thread now. Even so, this does complicate matters and make things more difficult from the outset.

It's something along those lines, though in the last game it was a series of die rolls that produced the exact end result that followed, and the combination of rolls had very low odds of happening. It's great when stuff like that happens, as it usually takes the story down a path that had never even occurred to me but is full of horrible - I mean, wonderful - possibilities.

That is actually an OOC thread for character creation, which is why it hasn't been updated in months.

Welcome back, everyone! We have three of our UNIT people back so far, at least, and I can NPC the others if needed. The vehicles won't move until the drivers (Leonek and Valerie) say they're leaving, as I need decisions about where everyone is going and if you're splitting up. I'll do it this weekend if their players don't act by then. A couple of our players may have disappeared and haven't logged in since early November, but I can recruit replacements for them if they don't return soon. Otherwise, they'll stay NPCs in the meantime. We're getting close to the point where it's difficult to add new playable characters, so this would be one way for a new player to enter the game.

I've been writing a couple of pieces for a pair of upcoming Doctor Who books recounting the impact of Doctor Who stories on fans. Quite a lot of the stories have people who've already volunteered to write a piece on them, but many don't, and more volunteers are always needed.

To see the full list see here. It's updated as more people volunteer, and as more completed stories are sent in.

The editor is hoping to complete work on the next two books by March 2013 and so is looking for articles to be finished by January 2013 or soon after. If you finish an article for one of the books you may be invited to write an article for the other one. I've already sent a piece in about Enlightenment (1983) and am now finishing off a piece on The Girl Who Waited (2011).

Detailed instructions and guidelines for contributors are provided, along with a template Word file which you can use to quickly lay out your article as it would appear in the book. Articles of around 450 or 1000 words are preferred, fitting nicely into 1 or 2 pages.

That is wonderful! I have a story I could tell about Planet of Fire's significance to me. I saw a screening of it at a Doctor Who convention (my first convention ever) I went to with my dad, before it actually aired on TV in America. It's still available, but I don't know if I'll have time to write an essay on it.

It takes surprisingly little time I'm finding to rattle off 450 words. Even my latest 988 word piece on The Girl Who Waited didn't take that long :D If you did have time it would be great because it sounds like you have a really good story to tell.

Yes. I haven't seen the film yet, but he's the best thing in the trailers for me  If I remember correctly he was on the short list for playing old Bilbo in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, so Peter Jackson clearly remembered him.

Today I just discovered the Doctor Who Solitaire Story Game. I've only just started looking at it, but it looks pretty awesome - and it's free! The link above goes to the wiki, where you can play using the four core books. The First Doctor adventure book is also on the wiki, with many more to follow eventually. All of these and dozens more adventure books for all of the Doctors and various other stuff are available for free from BoardGameGeek and the Yahoo! Discussion Group for the DWSSG in PDF format, though both require you to register.

Big Finish who produce audio adventures with Doctors 4-8 have just announced their plans for a special release for the 50th anniversary. It's going to star all of Doctors 4-8, plus companions for each of them. And by the sounds of the blurb Doctors 1-3 will be involved in the story too somehow, raising the possibility of some of their companions guest starring too. I'll be buying it anyway  To read more see here. The Big Finish audios include some really good ones - including possibly my favourite Doctor Who story of all, The Chimes of Midnight - and are well worth checking out.

Wow, that does sound great! I've got the first collection of Eighth Doctor audio adventures by Big Finish which includes Storm Warning, Sword of Orion, The Stones of Venice, and Minuet in Hill. I bought them when I happed across them at a Chapters when visiting Vancouver about two and a half years ago, and I listened to them after I finished watching the classic series and the 1996 TV movie. Minuet in Hell is my favorite out of those four, and it features Nicholas Courtney as the Brigadier. Big Finish also made an animated version of Shada with Paul McGann, Lalla Ward, and John Leeson. You can watch it free here, where I saw it in 2010. It is also included on the newly released DVD of Shada along with what exists of the story and Tom Baker's connecting narration. I've preordered that, but it hasn't shipped yet.

I don't have any other Big Finish audios. I've seen them during visits to Forbidden Planet and the Doctor Who shop in London, but I spent a small fortune buying the five collectons of soundtracks from all of the missing TV episodes, and there was a limit to how much I could spend.

Yeah, Shada's a great one! You can't go wrong with Tom Baker as the Doctor and Douglas Adams writing the story. It's a shame they were never able to finish making it, but at least most of it is intact.

No problem, Thorn!

I finally had a chance to play my first adventure in the Doctor Who Solitaire Story Game, and it's loads of fun! There are so many different things (and combinations of things) that can happen that you could never exhaust the possibilities, and that's just with the core books. The additional books must add so much more. The text is often general and abstract about what happens, leaving it to the reader's imagination to fill in the story. In my first adventure, my newly regenerated Ninth Doctor visited Earth in the year 12,005, during the Second Roman Empire. Taking my trusty sonic screwdriver, I went out to explore and promptly got hopelessly lost. However, I was soon able to find my way and ran into Marcus Falco, a centurion. He told me about his friend Quintus, a Senator, and we went to visit him. Quintus offered to show us the sights of Novus Roma, and I happily agreed. We went to the arena to take in a robot gladiatorial game from Quintus's luxurious box seats ("Don't worry, the robots are not sentient," Quintus assured me). The opportunity to relax gained me a bonus Luck point, but it was not long before danger reared its ugly head.

Continuing to explore the city, the three of us stumbled upon evidence that secret forces were at work. Putting our heads together, we deduced that the Krillitanes were behind it. But what were they doing here? We investigated further by entering a restricted area - and promptly bumped into two Krillitanes, one of which was an Elder. Fortunately, Krillitanes are easily confused by someone who's smart enough, and the Elders love to gloat about their plans. I talked to them and tricked the Elder into revealing the Krillitanes' purpose here. They were attempting to crack the God-code written into the DNA of all living things so that they could control all life. Thanking the Elder, I said that we had to leave, and it just let us walk off. On our way out, we encountered a patrol of six Roman soldiers, one of which was a centurion. I approached them with open arms. "Friends, Romans, Countrymen!" I said in greeting - only to met with six blasters pointed at my face. "That's odd. That line went over well when I told Mark Antony to use it. Of course, he didn't turn out so well in the end. Pity about the snake."

"This is a forbidden zone!" barked the centurion. "You are not allowed here!"

"Me, not allowed? I'm allowed everywhere!" I tried to warn them about the threat posed by the Krilliatanes, but in spite of my charm, Quintus's status and brilliant oratory, and Marcus Falco's position in the legions, these soldiers refused to listen, determined to enforce their silly laws even if it meant their doom.

"Surrender or die!" ordered the centurion, so we put our hands up and were marched off to prison. Quintus could have used his influence to get us out had he not been in trouble himself.

I was taken to be interrogated, where I was subjected to their mind probe. "No, not the mind probe," I said in a very insincere tone. I easily withstood it by thinking of nothing but nursery rhymes and was taken back to the cell I shared with Marcus and Quintus. It was an easy matter to escape, with a little help from my sonic screwdriver. However, just as we were leaving the prison, we ran into a group of six Krillitanes, their leader the same Elder I had met before. My glib tongue proved to be effective again, and I got the Elder to reveal more about their plans and to let us depart in peace.

Now I had the beginnings of a plan to defeat the Krilliatanes, but I needed to do some scientific research (I should have used engineering, but I forgot that the sonic screwdriver gives me an extra Engineering trait. Still, I rolled well enough that I didn't need it.). Quintus provided a lab for us to use, and I made excellent progress. Continuing my research, I soon made a major breakthrough. "Eureka!" I cried, as I'd figured out exactly how to stop the Krillitane and prevent any bloodshed. Now I just needed to find the right way to approach them, so I started studying what I knew of them to find their weaknesses.

Before I could finish, they approached me. The Elder and its escorts had tracked us to the lab, and they surged inside. "You have interfered for the last time, Doctor!" it said. It issued a chilling order to its minions. "Kill them all!" The Krillitanes advanced...

"Wait!" I cried, and to my surprise they did. Again I talked my way out of trouble, claiming that I had discovered that the designer of the God-code had also implanted a self-destruct mechanism to keep any living things from exploiting it. If they completed their studies and learned the code, they would immediately die! The Krillitanes were skeptical at first, but I showed them my research and used enough technobabble to fool the Elder (and spent a Luck point because I botched my initial roll). The Elder was convinced at last, and it vowed to stop trying to break the code. It even let us live out of gratitude.

Mission accomplished, I returned to the TARDIS to continue my travels. I said goodbye to Marcus Falco, but Quintus wanted to come with me and see the universe. I gladly welcomed him aboard as my first companion, and we headed for our next adventure in time and space.

It looks like I got into the DWSSG at just the right time. Though earlier versions of the game have been around since 2009, it's been vastly improved and expanded. The wiki didn't go live until December 25, and the First Doctor supplement wasn't there until January 5, the day before I discovered the game. The other supplements will be added throughout the year, with each of the classic Doctors getting their supplements placed on the wiki on the first Saturday of each month in order. There is also additional content on the wiki that is not in the PDF versions of the game, including sound clips and many more pictures. The hyperlinks really help with navigating as well. I've had to keep track of everything on paper, but later this year there are plans to allow character sheets and moves to be recorded and saved on the wiki, which will make it an even more convenient way to play. A dice roller will be added to the wiki too.

No problem, and enjoy!

The DWSSG now has the dice roller up and working, and I've played a few more adventures in the last couple of weeks, including one where Quintus and I visited Pompeii in A.D. 79, shortly before Vesuvius blew its top. He was delighted to see the original Roman Empire. The Sycorax were planning to invade, and humanity would have been helpless in that era. Fortunately, I managed to defeat the Sycorax by finding the beacon that would guide their invasion fleet in to land and placing it on top of the volcano, thus destroying the fleet. We even managed to get safely into the TARDIS before the eruption.

Welcome to Mskatonic, who will be taking over the character of Valerie Soames!

Mskatonic, the first two adventures may be found in the Hall of Fame, though you need to be logged in in order to see them. They are The Terror Out of Time and The Ninth Planet, and you're free to read them if you wish, though you certainly don't need to do so. Your character would have no knowledge of the events of those stories.

Take your time. :D Valerie has been an NPC for so long, a few extra days won't hurt. Your thread has stalled for the last week or so anyway, as none of the other players have posted. I'm still getting caught up on things after the convention, so I can wait a bit longer to update. One nice thing about play by post is that things can move more slowly. It also makes it easier to limit player knowledge to match character knowledge.

Those of you in Regrouping do need to let me know who is going where before I can continue with that thread.

Thanks. I have caught up on most of the reading, so hope to post soon. I do like how it's set up with different players being limited to the different scenes/ threads that they are actually involved in. Keeps things a little mysterious as to what the other players and characters are up to when they are off doing something else.

You're welcome. Separate threads for when the group is divided also adds to the drama and suspense in a way that's difficult to achieve around a table, and it's still possible to run multiple subgroups simultaneously. There's an excellent example of this in The Terror Out of Time at the end of Episode 3 and the start of Episode 4.

I'm looking forward to them too! There are also the BBC America specials (presumably they're airing on the regular BBC as well) every month, each one featuring one of the eleven Doctors, including a full story from each of them, leading up to the 50th anniversary in November. They ran The Aztecs for William Hartnell in January and Tomb of the Cybermen for Patrick Troughton in February. Jon Pertwee's will be later this month. I don't know which story they'll pick, but I think Spearhead from Space would be a good choice. I like Inferno even better, but they don't have enough time in the slot to run a seven-parter; they've been using four-parters so far.

They're not airing here in the UK. Fans here are very disappointed so far by what's happening anniversary-wise. There seem to be more celebrations in other countries. For example New Zealand is also airing past doctor episodes throughout the year.

That stinks that the BBC isn't giving it the attention it deserves. I wasn't expecting that. I'm used to the UK getting Doctor Who stuff first most of the time. It's great to see BBC America finally airing classic episodes, which they've never done before. PBS used to have them, but they stopped shortly before the new series started. I have all of the released episodes so far on DVD (the rest should be coming later this year), but it's still nice to see. The Special Edition of The Aztecs (which includes recently recovered Episode 3 of Galaxy 4, along with a reconstruction of the other episodes) and of The Ark in Space are due to be released soon here and are already on their way to me. It's also great to see some of the missing episodes animated and merged with the soundtracks in order to complete the stories that are only missing one or two. I saw The Reign of Terror not too long ago, with animation filling in the missing fourth and fifth episodes, done by Big Finish. They're also doing The Tenth Planet's missing final episode, and I was delighted to hear recently that The Ice Warriors will have its two missing episodes animated after all.

My new DVDs arrived yesterday, a few days before the official release date of Tuesday. I've already almost finished rewatching The Aztecs. Then there's a lot of bonus material, much of it new to this edition, and the reconstruction of Galaxy 4. In addition to the recovered episode, about six minutes of video from Episode 1 still exist.

Well we may yet have masses of celebrations here in the UK. So I may be being unfair ;) But so far nothing, zilch, nada. Very disappointing.

Though I did really enjoy watching the reports on the Internet of the filming of the docudrama about the early years of Doctor Who, including the recreation of that classic scene on the bridge with the Daleks.

I was getting 404s as well. I had the direct link bookmarked and it seems that the forum changed some of the info in the address. I've re-adjusted my bookmark since then.

Maybe it has something to do with the changes that were made to the board this week. I haven't had a problem with that, and I have the site's home page bookmarked.

Yes, I think that's it. The homepage was unaffected, but existing links to threads and posts from before the change are now broken. I tried following one of the links at the end of a locked thread, and the page was not found. It looks like every thread now has /pbp after the home page but before the page itself.

I've reported the issue to carnage_lee, who implemented the changes on Tuesday. If he fixes them and changes the addresses back to the way they were before, any new bookmarks you've made could be invalidated, so you should check the site's homepage if that happens.

I'm going to go ahead and transition to Episode 2 now. I'll be including links at the end of each thread to the new threads, and those will work the way things are now, but if the changes are rolled back they will break. In that case, I'll just have to edit them.

Hey guys, sorry about the lack of posts from me. I've been knocked out with a nasty combo of a cold, acute tonsillitis and some severe eye infection. I've been on forced leave from work (I'm a teacher and obviously can't be around kids at the moment), I'll have something up tomorrow.

Thanks, I'm almost better now. I've been more bored than anything else. Honestly it is my own fault, I should have gone to the doctor sooner - I mean I pay into the country's healthcare system so I might as well take advantage of it. But I don't like doctors, and I wasn't looking forward to dealing with one in another language so I put it off until it was too late.

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. Its been a while sine I role-play on as forum so please be patient . I am posting from my phone and my grammar is off, off and in the next town over. I'm still trying to under stand the dice rules and stuff. I do have both Quick-start and 5.x edition of CoC. Give me some time to get familiar.

I wanted to say I loved reading Chapter One and the opening of Chapter Two. The tension, suspense and the dread is there and its will only get better.

Thank You for having me as a dinner guest. :D

One more thing , how do I create a OCC button to ask if I need to make a roll on skills if needed?

Mr. Handy, I'm sorry to do this in mid-scenario but life has thrown me a curve ball...a massive life crisis. As you can imagine things have all the sudden become crazy insane and intense. I don't know if it's permanent or temporary. That said I will have to quit the game and allow someone else to have the TARDIS keys.

You're welcome. I did make a post in Existing Games Looking for Players to see if anyone's interested in taking over him, though that may end up being on a temporary basis. It might not be easy to find another player for him anyway, but I do have an alternative plan that would allow me to keep the campaign going even if you can't return and I can't find a replacement.

Sorry about your spot of bad times, Jaysun. I hope you work everything out soon enough.

I wouldn't be too adverse to taking Story's part - if even temporarily. Lucius is about to go ape-shit crazy anyway what with his plummeting sanity score.

by jaysun81
I'm hoping my departure isn't permanent but things are very delicate right now and I just don't have the time. I will know more in a week or two. As far as ImpInTraining taking over Story, especially if my absence is only temporarily, I would be in favor. I'll check-in in a week or so.

Re: The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

Posted: Tue Apr 23, 2013 5:31 am
by Mr. Handy
I don't want you playing two characters at once, but if something happens to Lucius, you'd be welcome to take over Story. Don't get too reckless with him, though. I have plans for Lucius...horrible plans. His Sanity really isn't that low, anyway. Some characters start with less than that. When it drops below 20, then you can worry.

Story is off on his own and doesn't need to do anything for some time, so there's no rush.

Fair enough. But you can repeat that to me about Lucius' sanity when the fish-men start walking out of the ocean and Lucius is in the fetal position rocking back and forth.

Great to hear that. Right now there are only two players who haven't posted in a long time, so I've declared them missing and put their characters up for grabs. Andrew won't be able to join us after all, so both Chad Engraham and Elliot Webb are both up for grabs for new players.

Jaysun: If you want to return please don't be shy. I'm having a lot of fun playing Story. But Story is your character, your idea, your vision. If your dire need for time away has passed and you have the desire, please feel free to step back into the saddle. I've tried to be very verbose in my posts so that you would have all the "why's" of what I have tried to accomplish. You owe me no greater explanation than you would like to return.

If Jaysun does accept your generous offer, you can still play by taking over either Chad or Elliot, both of whom are currently without a player. Andrew may be able to join us eventually after all, but there will still be an opening for him since there are two characters available.

Sorry for the very late reply! I'm really surprised with everybody's patience! Life has been very crazy, with school finals finally finished and than my city being flooded last week. For a landlocked province in Canada I'd never expect a flooding where I live. Yeah, the same province. It wasn't really big news in my city Calgary (where I live) but happened in another town called High River. Apparently, the RCMP confiscated firearms from people's homes because they were evacuated. Not sure if they confiscated them as they evicted people from their homes or deliberately went into people's homes after they've left.

In my opinion, I think those firearms are in a more secure place than left unattended in a home.

You're free to choose whichever character you prefer. Once you've caught up on that character's IC threads, you may post when ready. You may want to read the Your Careet In U.N.I.T. thread as well. You'll have to pretend you don't know everything you learned when playing as Story, of course.

I had heard about the gun confiscation as well. I don't think the RCMP had the legal right to do what they did. If anyone tried that here, there would indeed be hell to pay. One article I read said that the RCMP would return the guns if the owners provided proof of ownership, but that might be hard to do if those homes were flooded out and the paperwork was destroyed.

I am here, and all caught up. Wow, great story so far. Elliot will be a LOT more active than he has been to here.

Quick thought on the helo crash. Got to play with Sandy Peterson, I was a pilot of a space craft. I sent my co-pilot to a planet surface with a landing vehicle and he wrecked it bad. So I took down the big ship and also wrecked it bad. Both of us rolling over 90+. So I know the feeling.

Anyway, couple things.
1. I'd like to think Elliot caught on that he would have never heard of Harry Potter, when it was mentioned in the car.
2. I'll keep a look out for anything that can be used as a replacement for some of my more professional tools.

Looks like fun guys, I'll be posting in the main thread soon.

Back home so posting again. Had great time. Was expensive, cos we had to stay in a hotel for 2 nights, due to taking my wheelchair + MS-like illness. But had great evening at book festival last night. Saw Neil Gaiman talk about his Sandman series of comics/graphic novels, and then a multi-author celebration of the late great Scottish writer (sci-fi and mainstream fiction) Iain Banks who died recently.

Welcome aboard! I'm not all that familiar with that sort of thing, as I haven't read the portions where his player was present since July, so you'd probably get a better idea from reading his threads than I have now. Maybe the other players will have some insights.

The last thread I saw that was posted for Raymond was by yourself actually. He had offered to get some drinks for Brook. I assume they are on good terms as far as interacting in a group. The thread left off at most leaving to go to the Ship Inn for drinks, one is at the Inn already, and two of that group are going to hold a private conversation outside the museum.

In any case I think I can get posting without many issues. Please correct my posts if I somehow do not portray Raymond appropriately as it relates to past writings.

Thanks for the input thus far.

You're welcome. I just posted a new thread and moved Raymond into it (Return to the Inn), so you'll need to post there when you're ready. You really should read his threads from beginning to end if you haven't already to get the best feel for him, but I'm sure you'll do fine. When I posted for Raymond as an NPC, I was trying not to do too much with him.

Wonderful news, and just in time for Doctor Who's 50th anniversary! The BBC has confirmed that "a number" of missing episodes have been recovered, and there will be a press conference about them later this week. We don't know how many or which ones, but presumably they'll tell us then. There have been rumors about this for months, and some of them say the episodes were recovered in Ethiopia and/or Sierra Leone. One rumor said all 106 were recovered, but I seriously doubt that. Another high end rumor put the total at about 90, but I'm trying not to raise my hopes too much. I think double digits are possible, however.

I should be wrapping up Episode 2 and starting Episode 3 of this adventure tonight.

EDIT: I've moved everyone to Episode 3 except for Leonek. I'll have to wait on his thread to keep him in sync with the others until he catches up. Wouldn't want a nasty temporal paradox. ;)

I was really sceptical about the 106 reports, but still hopeful something might have been found. I've heard the number 9 bandied about quite a bit. To be honest I'll be happy with anything, but I'm expecting smaller rather than larger. But yay :)

9 episodes was the right number. The BBC announced they've recovered all the missing episodes of Enemy of the World and all but one from The Web of Fear (and probably duplicates of the one episode from each that had been recovered previously), both of them six-parters. They've also left the door open to the possibility that there may have been more episodes recovered. Enemy of the World is being prepared for a November DVD release in the UK, but Web of Fear won't be ready until next year (my guess is because they want the time to get the still missing episode 3 animated) - though I've heard that it is already on iTunes. This helps fill in a large gap in Season 5. I remember being overjoyed when Tomb of the Cybermen was recovered in its entirety in 1992 - this is an even bigger find!

Enemy of the World was one of the inspirations behind The Ninth Planet, the previous scenario in this campaign - only in The Ninth Planet, the bad guys had already succeeded in taking over the world before the adventure even started, decades after the events in Enemy of the World. The Web of Fear is the story immediately following Enemy of the World, and it is the first one to star Nicholas Courtney as Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart, a role he would play many times (though he played a different role a couple years earlier in The Daleks' Masterplan). This one was basically a forerunner to the UNIT stories, though UNIT didn't exist yet and he was only a colonel, not yet promoted to Brigadier.

The BBC aired a new trailer last night, which shows all the Doctors 1-11, to varying degrees, as well as a large number of adversaries, and some companions.

For a frame by frame breakdown, with 222 photos, see this Facebook album. You do not have to be logged into Facebook to be able to view this. Clicking on each image allows you to view it in more detail.

The trailer is in part a teaser for the upcoming anniversary special, but it seems more like a celebration of the past, than anything else.

Oh and I'm pleased to say I'm getting to watch the past Doctor special documentaries that aired on BBC America earlier this year. I'm lucky to be able to do this, because I have access to the satellite channel Watch which bought the UK rights. In the weeks running up to the anniversary Watch are showing the docu + a story for a doctor on each Saturday and Sunday. So far I have watched and enjoyed the docus for docs 1-3, with doc 4's coming tomorrow. I'm generally skipping the stories though, cos I've seen them all before. I'm doing my own special watch, choosing a story for each doctor each weekend. We're now up to doc 8, and opted for a listen (so much better than the TV movie), and are halfway through Big Finish's "Seasons of Fear" now.

Awesome trailer! I'm really looking forward to the 50th anniversary special. It's a shame they couldn't get Christopher Eccleston (or any of the earlier doctors) to be in it too, but it should still be great. Tom Baker wouldn't appear in The Five Doctors, but they were able to work around that.

I did a Doctor Who marathon in 2010-2012, watching the entire classic series (except what was missing), the 1996 TV-movie, and listening to the first four Big Finish Eighth Doctor audio adventures. I haven't rewatched the new series yet, though I do have all of them on video.

I'll be away at conventions October 31-November 3 and November 8-10, so I probably won't be able to post then. I'm not sure if I'll even be able to post between them, as I work during the week and will have little time to catch up, though I am off November 11.

Yes, happy 50th for Doctor Who! I enjoyed both Adventures in Time and Space and Day of the Doctor too. I watched the latter a couple of times, and I'm glad I did. It's definitely down. Judging from what happens when I try to bring up the homepage, it looks like the domain name expired. The site hadn't been updated since 2011, so whoever created it may have abandoned it. You can use a different dice roller (Dark and Moody has a decent one). This site also now has a built in dice-roller using the dice tags, so I've activated it for my games, including this one.

Press the dice button, then type in what kind of dice you want to use inside the parentheses, like 1d100 or 1d8 or something. If you wanna roll twice, type 2d100 or 2d6.

Once it's done, just submit and your roll will be made for you.

Hope that helps :D

Thanks all for all the kind words :) It's a long-term problem I've been battling for 20 years, and I'm still alive, which is really good with this! But it can be hard at times to get the cocktail right to control the brain inflammation, and it's not right at mo. Hopefully will be sorted in a week.

Thanks all for kind wishes. Saw consultant on Friday and steroids shot up a lot immediately that morning. They've taken about 3/4 days to kick in, but I'm starting to see benefits now, and the neurological problems are easing.

I've just posted an update for Elizabeth in the IC thread, so am taking her over again Mr Handy :)

All,

I have just received word that my Father in Law has died so I may not be posting as regular over the next few days as I have funerals to sort out and all the associated trappings. I will post as and when I can. I feel bad because I have just started this and well, we cannot put a time on our passing I suppose.

Back as soon as I can

Something messed up happened to me lately, which has kind of taken most of my attention over the past week. A second cousin of mine allegedly committed suicide, gun to the head. So weird, because she didn't seem at all suicidal to me. Sure, she had some problems with making up stories, and a drug abuse issue ... but the weirdest thing is that I am just as sure she committed suicide as I am that my cousin's wife (her mother) probably killed her and made it look like a suicide.

What a messed up circumstance. Anyway, as messed up as she was, if her death was at someone else's hands then they need to be held accountable. So I've taken liberty of contacting the Arizona police and filling them in on all the details I know - things her parents wouldn't have shared. I wish there was something I could have done to have avoided the whole thing, but I feel it was pretty much destined to happen.

The thing that really pisses me off about the whole circumstance is that her mother keeps going on about how it is all the deceased's husband's fault when he was in Kentucky the entire time.

Firstly - very sorry to hear of your family's loss. Nothing can prepare you for such an event, especially when it happens out of the blue like this.

All power to you for passing your concerns onto the police - they are the ones best suited to find out what happened here. Could not have been an easy call to make.

The mother may be looking for someone to blame ... a standard reflex action when something goes wrong. She may well be in shock still or perhaps it is part of her grieving process.

Thanks all. We deal with loss in our own way - and it's something I've been accustomed to doing from a distance, being as how I have been away from my family since 1986 except for the brief vacations I take back there. Loss, especially unexpected loss, is never an easy thing, but I don't envy anyone who has to be there at a funeral where a mother and father is burying their kid.

I'm going to go on just believing (unless I hear otherwise) that my cousin's mind just was out of commission and led her to this tragic event. She was a habitual liar, and perhaps she started believing her own lies to the point that she felt safer taking her own life. Maybe she did it in a moment of clarity where she realized she was a danger to others, or maybe she simply had no idea what she was doing. I'll probably never know the truth.

I had incredible success in my skill checks.
Skill raise checks: Insight (63%) Listern (50%) Sneak (65%) Spot Hidden (57%) Swim (25%) Knife (59%) (1d100=98, 1d100=26, 1d100=85, 1d100=76, 1d100=67, 1d100=59)
So in order, Insight, Sneak, Spot Hidden, & Swim all raised. Knife was right at the skill level, which I believe that is a fail... must roll over. Four out of 6, not too shabby.
Skill raises: Insight (63% + ?) Sneak (65% + ?) Spot Hidden (57% + ?) Swim (25% + ?) (1d10=4, 1d10=7, 1d10=4, 1d10=1)

Lucius' new skill stats:
Insight (67%)
Sneak (72%)
Spot Hidden (61%)
Swim (26%)

Ok here are my skill rolls to see if increase anything:

Rolling for skill increases in used skills - trying to beat First Aid (36%), History (70%), Listen (34%), Psychology (41%), Spot Hidden (38%). (1d100=55, 1d100=56, 1d100=49, 1d100=57, 1d100=75)

So that's increases on First Aid, Listen, Psychology, and Spot Hidden - woot!

And here are the numbers for those rises:

Rolling for % increases in skills First Aid, Listen, Psychology, and Spot Hidden (1d10=9, 1d10=4, 1d10=6, 1d10=10)

So the new numbers for Elizabeth's increased skills are

First Aid 45%
Listen 38%
Psychology 47%
Spot Hidden 48%

Ooh I forgot about Swim! Here's my trying to raise it:

Seeing if raise Swim skill (stat 25%), and any raise (1d10) if I do (1d100=90, 1d10=2)

So that's a +2 for Elizabeth's Swim, which is now 27%.

Jaysun81, Yockenthwaite, ImpInTraining, and Thorn, if you want to play a temporary UNIT character in Episode 4, you can get started creating that character in the Character Creation/Rules thread any time you like. The "Your Career in U.N.I.T. thread" has guidelines to help with character creation. Given how I think the endgame will unfold, you probably want to create a character who is either combat-oriented or has a role that can support combat-oriented characters, such as a medic.

Russacky, you can also create your new character whenever you wish.

I'm not sure how long it will be before I can introduce the new characters, but I'm hoping it will be within a few weeks.

The guy went down for the count before Leonek had a chance to attack him, and we're now out of combat.

You've still got a few weeks, I think. I can introduce your new character as soon as it's ready, but it can probably wait until the end of May. You can find the rules and post your character in the Character Creation/Rules thread, and Your Career in U.N.I.T. has various templates for types of characters. Given what the endgame will likely involve, your character should either be combat-oriented or should have a role that can support combat operations. Officer, Soldier, Medical Officer, and Covert Operative are all likely choices, though other professions are possible as well. If you want to play something other than what's listed, I can provide a skill list.

Hi all,

First off I must apologise for leaving the site so abruptly, but as we all know real life and health issues get in the way of this fantastic hobby of ours.

It is with a heavy heart and much soul searching that I have to announce that I have to shelve all the participation in the games I am in, unfortunately the games I am running as well, (however poorly of late). The duration of this 'shelving' is indeterminate at present.

I apologise for all and any inconvenience this has caused fellow gamers. The people on here are a first rate bunch and I am proud to have been associated with them, and hope that I will be allowed back into the fold again in the future.

Take care of yourself, and you'll always be welcome back. Dr Gordon Baxter is still outside the Laboratory waiting to be let in, should/can I just obey my curiosity and enter the room?

I was waiting for a PC in one of the other threads to answer the door, but the player hasn't posted in some time. I'll go ahead and NPC the character soon, but I don't have time to do that tonight (it will require creating a new thread and closing off the two existing ones).

Hi, Thorn! There's still time for you to finish creating your UNIT character for the final part of this adventure. I can introduce her as soon as she's ready. If you have any questions or need any help, just ask. Getting to the endgame is taking longer than I had thought, and it looks like this one will go to five episodes. One player who had been posting infrequently recently made a spate of posts that allowed me to progress his thread pretty far but hasn't posted in a little while.

Yes, that's right. The TARDIS crew has left this era and will return in the next adventure, which will be called The Brotherhood of Death and will be set in ancient Rome. Once that starts, you'll be playing Brook again.

We didn't leave by choice, but a very bad dice roll :( We were very sad in character and out that it turned out like that.

Thanks, and don't worry, you're not holding things up at all. You've been posting very frequently, and you're well ahead of the others.

Well, it was Story's choice that the TARDIS crew risked leaving. I explained to his player when he was considering attempting a short hop to get the TARDIS out of the caves that it would require a Pilot TARDIS roll, and that failure would send the TARDIS out of this era and on to the next adventure. He decided to risk it anyway, but his Pilot skill is rather low, and he failed the roll. It might have been possible to carry the TARDIS out the back way and go with Chad, Leonek, and Tobias without much difficulty. Of course, then the TARDIS crew would have seen the same thing they had. That makes two adventures in a row where the TARDIS crew have missed the finale, which I find sad too. The locals in the last adventure weren't able to finish the job on their own. Hopefully this lot will have better luck. At least this time there's a way that the players of the TARDIS crew can participate if they wish, even if their main characters cannot.

In classic Doctor Who's earlier stories, there is often a contrived reason why the Doctor and his companions don't simply leave (the TARDIS is inaccessible, the Doctor or a companion is captured, etc.). There are only so many times I can do something like that before it gets old, though it does happen on occasion in this campaign. The TARDIS was stolen early on in this adventure, but the investigators were able to track it down and find it before I had planned for them to do so. I had originally expected the TARDIS crew to help the UNIT team with their original mission and either flee with them or possibly get caught, forcing them to team up with UNIT in the endgame (and retrieve the TARDIS at that time). There is an upcoming adventure in which there's no way it will be possible to hop in the TARDIS and escape, unless you do so at the outset, but I don't want to say more about that to avoid spoilers.

As to why the Doctor doesn't just get in the TARDIS and leave, in The Pyramids of Mars Sarah Jane Smith said basically that the aliens couldn't win as they had just come from the future and all was well. The Doctor and Sarah got back into the TARDIS and the Doctor took them back to where they had just come from, only now the earth was a wind swept desert. The Doctor explained they were now part of the timeline where the aliens were trying to take earth and if they just left then history would change, and so they went back and defeated the alien plot. So the reason the Doctor doesn't just leave is that he has to stop what ever is happening as he is now part of it. Of course you could argue that the Doctor wouldn't just leave people in trouble but in truth he is just responding to one of the most powerful forces in nature the power of the narrative.

That wasn't always the case. The first Doctor, played by William Hartnell, was very different in some ways. Many of his stories were pure historicals, where there was no alien threat. In Marco Polo, the only reason they couldn't just get back into the TARDIS and leave when things got dangerous was that Marco Polo had taken possession of the TARDIS, intending to offer it as a gift to Kublai Khan. In The Aztecs, the TARDIS was in the inner chamber of an Aztec tomb, and the stone door which closed behind them when they left the room could not be opened from the outside. The Doctor and his companions spent much of the story trying to find a way back inside, and the Doctor was trying to convince Barbara not to interfere for fear of changing history. In The Reign of Terror, the Doctor and his companions got separated early on and did not reunite until much later. Of course, in The Daleks, the Doctor himself prevented everyone from leaving by deliberately sabotaging the TARDIS because his insatiable curiosity drove him to explore. Later on, the Doctor became more selfless and didn't need any external motivation for not leaving people in danger, though you do see hints of his old ways. In Spearhead from Space, the third Doctor's premiere story, he got into the TARDIS and tried to leave Earth even though he knew of the Nestene threat, but he was foiled because the Time Lords had stranded him.

Welcome to Mozy, who will be playing Evert Jacobs!

Quite right. My apologies. With the beast lurking about outside I really saw no viable exit without someone in my crew potentially perishing. One final thought...while we are in a version of the "Whoniverse" Story is not the Doctor.

I don't want to give it away, but you'll understand once it happens. It's actually much more mundane than it seems, but no less effective.

Even the Doctor's companions could die on rare occasions. When they do, it is usually a pointless death that resulted from not listening to the Doctor. The Daleks' Master Plan, a twelve-part epic in the third season, saw both the first and the second death of a companion. Granted, there is some debate over whether or not one of them qualifies as a companion, but personally I think so. The other companion had only joined the TARDIS crew at the end of the previous story, The Myth Makers. However, a companion who had been around for some time was killed off in Earthshock. I remember that one stunning me when I saw it for the first time at the age of eight, especially as it was a companion I liked and with whom I identified. The end credits were completely silent and had a special image displayed.

There have been close calls in this campaign, particularly when Elizabeth nearly died late in the first adventure. I'm glad she survived! It was a perfectly reasonable option to take off in the TARDIS and hope for the best.

The campaign has had a fairly low death toll up until now. It's been rare for a PC to die, and when that happens it tends to be towards the end, which is a good thing. Yet there are still plenty of dangerous, thrilling moments. This adventure is also approaching the end, so expect it to get potentially deadly...

I've updated everyone's equipment lists. Whatever equipment Sergeant Carla Ecarg requested that isn't on her sheet is carried by the other members of her squad. Double slugs were not available, so normal slugs were substituted.

No double slugs? I've been cheated!
Oh well, I really had to be told "no" to something in that list I gave anyway- that's probably the one I can do without the most.
Plenty of other terrible things were packed to kill monsters, anyway. Sergeant Ecarg does not believe in overkill- a new enemy should be obliterated.
Sorry I went so ape on the list of stuff I wanted, but preparation is key.

It's perfectly reasonable to ask for whatever you thought might be useful, just as long as you understand that not all of it can be acquired at short notice. You're well equipped. Those who did not take advantage of the opportunity to gear up may regret it...

Yes, you're in that thread (as part of "Everyone else"). I did ask for a Spot Hidden roll from everyone early on the first page, but few people have actually rolled.

That roll was requested 2-3 days before Sgt. Donald entered the game.

I was waiting for a chance to have my PC say something but I am having trouble visualizing where he is.

You could have still rolled, but that's okay. Donald is by the Brigadier's side, and his squad is with him. Your group was standing in the middle of the road, outside the vehicles.

You've moved along now, however. You're in a new thread, and there's a roll for you to make. I'm transitioning to Episode 5 over the next few days, and that one should bring this adventure to a conclusion - one way or another.

That would be a Craft(Gunsmith) roll. The base level for Craft skills is 5%, but Tinker has it much higher than that.

Re: The Zero Room - OOC Chat Thread

You're welcome, and welcome aboard! The first thing you should do is look at the Cast of Characters thread. The initial post tells you which characters are in the game and which of their players are MIA. Their character sheets are listed below, and you should look through them. You may choose any of the ones marked MIA except for Valerie Soames, whose old player may return. The ones in the bottom portion of the cast list require the least catching up to play. The ones in the section above that have been in the game since the beginning, so you'd need to do a lot more back reading to play them. Alternatively, you can create your own character, but it would have to be a UNIT soldier. The Your Career in U.N.I.T. thread has background information on UNIT and occupational skill lists for the various careers. You'll probably use the Soldier template, though Military Officer or some other specialty is possible (however, your rank in that case would be no higher than lieutenant). The Character Creation/Rules thread has full instructions for creating your own character. You can build your character or ask questions about character creation in that thread, or you can post your choice in that thread if you decide to take over an abandoned character.

You should not read any In Character threads that do not include your character. The only exception is the Introduction thread in Episode 1, which everyone is free to read. Once the adventure concludes, which I expect will be in May, everyone will be free to read the entire adventure. If you choose an abandoned character, you should read that character's IC threads. I'll let you know which ones they are once you've made your selection, or I'll tell you which threads to read if you create a new character. Once I see your sheet, I'll know to which group your character should be assigned. Also, do not read Stranger in a Strange Land unless you've already decided to take over Raymond MacIntyre (which would be a challenge).

Episode 5: Storming the Castle

Storming the Castle is your current thread. Once you've caught up on the reading, you may post in character in that thread whenever you are ready. Have fun!

Yes, this thread has instructions for using the built-in dice roller and the spoiler button tags. You can also use Invisible Castle for dice rolling, but it's currently down. I've posted instructions for using it here, but they're out of date. Invisible Castle now has a Campaign Name field, so there's no need to put a prefix before the Character Name. Also, for the last few years new users have been unable to register at Invisible Castle, but you can still use most of the features without registering (when it's working, anyway).

Don't feel too bad. I did provide the option of playing a temporary UNIT character, though nobody has taken up the offer. You and Yockenthwaite declined, Thorn started creating a character but never finished, and ImpInTraining hasn't posted on this board in a long time. The offer still stands. You could also take over an abandoned character if you like. I'm hopeful that this will be completed by the end of May, though there will be a delay while I get the next scenario ready.

I'm getting an error too when I try to submit mine. I don't know what's causing it. It's similar to the error I get when I try to log off. You might want to let carnage_lee know. He knows more about this board (and how to fix it when things go wrong) than I do.

You're doing well so far. I am planning to start a new game in this campaign after this one concludes. It's called The Brotherhood of Death, and it's a Cthulhu Invictus scenario set in Rome in 44 B.C. I hope to start running it in late June. For that one, you'd need to create a new character local to that setting.

There are also two other games I've been running, and you'd be welcome to play in either or both. Zombie Apocalypse is a modern non-Mythos game, though it has its own similar mythology. It started in June 2006 on another board. I began as a player, but I took it over when the original Keeper no longer had time to run it. I've been running it ever since, though it has slowed down in recent years due to several longtime players leaving after Chapter 6 ended. It has stalled completely now, with no new IC posts since January. A new player could breathe some new life into it. I also ran Space Oddity for about five years. It's set in 1969 Philadelphia and is heavily inspired by Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes. I had to put it in the Graveyard last year after its two remaining players vanished, and you can still find it there. I'd need someone to take over the character of Bill Johns, as he's central to the plot. There is a lot of back reading required in order to do so. Links to both of these games (as well as the first two Doctor Who/Call of Cthulhu adventures) are in my signature.

Great! Just remember that if you intend to play, you shouldn't read any IC threads that don't involve a character you intend to take over (though the first two chapters of Zombie Apocalypse, which are on another site, may freely be read by all). Zombie Apocalypse allows you to play multiple characters as well if you wish. In fact, it's recommended that you do so, as this game is highly lethal. If you only want to play one, or to start with one, however, that's fine. You can take over abandoned characters or NPCs there, though you'll probably only want ones that were added in Chapter 7 to avoid having to do too much catching up to play them. You may also create one or two characters of your own in the Omaha or Gold settings, as there are ample survivors in both locations. To play a character in the Sword section, you must choose a pregenerated character.

I saw this and had a quick look.... there was a version update to install, which I did this morning but that didn't fix and ucp issues :/ After some digging it appeared that 'deleting all the data' in the 'banlist' table might alleviate the problem - of course this didn't work either (and now spammers blocked can re-register.... :x ). Then after some more head-scratching I removed the 'link' between PHPBB and Wordpress; that seems to have done the trick (actually I disabled account integration (as the wordpress plans never took off for this site)).

This also fixed the 'logout' bug.

Sorry that my tinkering caused this problems in the first place.

I won't have time to update tonight, but I have updates for all threads coming, including merging three of them. I should be able to get it done tomorrow night after returning from London.

Mr Handy is in London and has shitty internet. On top of that, he's been sick for a few days. ;)

There's a thread in the general section with absence announcements where you can post stuff like that.

Thank you. I was actually only sick for hours, but I had a lack of time and couldn't use the Internet from my room, only from certain places that were closed some of the time. Unfortunately, I won't be able to update tonight either, as I got bumped off of my scheduled flight and was stuck at the airport for hours waiting for the next one. There was wifi there, but it was very slow, even worse than what they had at the hotel, so I didn't get much done then. I got back home late, and I desperately need sleep, so it'll have to wait another day.

No, but it takes a while to load a revolver. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but there's a fight going on involving the other characters in your thread and I need to keep it in sync. Once that's resolved, I can move things forward at a faster pace.

Welcome back! If you'd like to finish creating your UNIT character and be in on the ending, it's not really too late. She could just have been along the whole time and not been involved up until now. Things are about to get very interesting.

I'm sorry it's taken so long to wrap this up, but I hope we'll be finished within a month or so. Then there will be a short break before the next adventure starts and Brook and the other regular characters return. I plan to get that started at the end of June.

We're not far from the end, but the combat has been slowing things down, especially when players take a while to post (and some haven't posted at all). It may not be over that quickly. As I said, it also depends on how things go down. This game could easily go into June, but I don't see it going into July.

Realistically, no. There's simply not enough time before the scenario ends, but you will have plenty of time afterwards if you survive. If someone had found it during the first trip to Dunwich, there would have been enough time to get started on it, but the focus then was on finding Dr. Kirby and getting her out of there. If I ever run a scenario in this campaign that takes place not too long after 1985, your character could return, but I have no immediate plans for one. I have the next several scenarios mapped out, and that era isn't one of the settings. I do have ideas for a future adventure that fits into the timeframe, but it will be years before I can get to it (if I ever do).

You're doing it right so far. Once you've gathered enough players and you're ready to start, let me know by posting in the interest thread (where I've already posted). You'll also need to provide a short text blurb about the game, like you'll see on the home page for the other games. Then I'll set up a forum for you and make you the Keeper. Any administrator (red username) or global moderator (green username) can create a forum, so someone else may do it first, but I'm more likely to see your post before the others.

Congratulations everyone on finishing The Shadow Over Dunwich! I hope all of you enjoyed playing it as much as I enjoyed running it. I'm sorry it took so long to complete, but we've finally made it. Though this adventure is over, the campaign will continue. The fourth adventure, The Brotherhood of Death, is set in Rome in 44 B.C. It should start in early July, though I may be able to get the TARDIS crew going in late June. Look for a thread in I'm Thinking of Running a Game... that should appear tonight. All of you are welcome to join, though except for the TARDIS crew you'll need to make new characters. You're all now free to read all of the threads in this game.

First, I'll give out rewards. The original UNIT team members other than Elliot (Chad, Leonek, Tinker, Tobias, Salem, and Valerie Soames) gain 1d4 Sanity for rescuing Dr. Kirby. Everyone except Elliot gains 1d4 Sanity for defeating Deep One Hybrids, 1d6 Sanity for defeating Deep Ones, 1d20 Sanity for defeating Rover, and 1d20 Sanity for defeating the Star-spawn. While the latter two were killed by NPC UNIT soldiers, all of you were part of the team. Elliot was on the other side at the time, but he does gain 1d10 (instead of 1d4) for rescuing Dr. Kirby because he personally went up and freed her by himself. The Deep Ones maintained their beachhead in Dunwich, so you do not get the Sanity award you would have for dislodging them. These rewards may take your Sanity above its starting level, but under no circumstances will it go above 99 - Cthulhu Mythos.

Also, look at your character sheets. Wherever you see a * next to a skill, that means that you've successfully used it during the adventure and have a chance to improve it. Roll 1d100 for each of these skills and post your results here. If you get higher than your current level in the skill, then roll 1d10 to see how much it increases. If you raise one or more of your skills to 90% or higher this way, you gain an additional 2d6 Sanity for each such skill. Again, this may raise your Sanity above its starting level. If you roll less than or equal to your current level in the skill, it does not increase. The TARDIS crew already rolled for skill increases.

Except for the TARDIS crew, these characters will not be proceeding to the next adventure, but time and space are vast, and anything might happen eventually. If a future adventure takes place not more than a few decades after this one, you may be able to bring your character from this adventure into it, older and (hopefully) wiser.

Chad managed to get through this with 1 Sanity remaining, barely avoiding permanent insanity. Those Sanity rewards will help him claw his way back, but he'll still be indefinitely insane and require months of institutionalization before he can function again.

Leonek, Salem, Valentine, Carla, and Newton are released as part of the prisoner exchange.

Tinker will eventually recover from post-regeneration trauma and convince UNIT that she's Raymond MacIntyre, and she will once again be UNIT's Technical Advisor.

Tobias will one day be able to reverse engineer the alien weapon he obtained and manufacture a version of it that's reliably usable by humans.

Victoria's spell is temporary and will wear off. Leonek got the shortest duration and will be over her by mid-morning on Saturday. Valentine and the other UNIT marine will recover in the afternoon. Elliot, however, got a double dose with longer durations each time, so it will last until Sunday morning. He'll be happily married to Victoria on Saturday, but the honeymoon will be over quickly, leaving him trapped by circumstances. She could cast the spell again, but doing so requires her to take a big Sanity hit. Once she turns into a full Deep One, she'll be at 0 Sanity, so then she can cast it freely (and she'll probably need to do it).

Valerie Soames is shaken, but she should recover quickly, having gotten herself and Dr. Kirby out alive and seen a terrifying creature destroyed.

Gordon will have plenty of time to look through his findings. The Japanese papers, which he can get translated, were written by the commander of the Imperial Japanese forces garrisoning Ponape in the South Pacific during World War Two. They had killed all of the hybrids they'd found living on the island when they first occupied it, burying them in a mass grave along with anything they thought worthless, such as the bag of stones and some parchments that detailed a spell in an unknown language. As Captain Josiah Lake's diary will reveal, he led the Royal Marines in defeating the Japanese on Ponape and seized the papers. He found the mass grave, the stones, and the parchment. Eventually, he deciphered and learned the spell (Contact Deep One). He returned to Ponape after the Japanese surrender on his way back home, where he cast the spell, met Y'Hali, and made a deal with her. The tome is a spellbook, written by Lake, with English versions of that spell and others taught to him by the Deep Ones. Gordon has the tools to become a powerful (if insane) sorcerer.

Peter came through this all right, having missed encountering the Star-spawn while he went to fetch the APC and thus not losing a single point of Sanity. He may even manage to max it out at 99 with the rewards he gets. Evert probably won't get that high, but he should be okay. The two of them will no doubt be needed for further intelligence work for UNIT.

Donald will be decorated and promoted for his leadership and preserving his squad (which managed to kill the Star-spawn) completely intact in an otherwise disastrous operation.

The recruitment thread for the next adventure is here.

Well done UNIT team! I haven't read the adventure since leaving, but will enjoy doing so now. Sounds like you all did a marvellous job. Sorry again the TARDIS whisked us away prematurely!

MrHandy I'm assuming that the sanity rewards for "everyone" don't apply to the TARDIS team cos we were whisked away early.

Looking forward to the next adventure!

Thank you! Yes, the TARDIS team doesn't get Sanity rewards. I thought I had posted that, but I guess I forgot to mention it.

As to how successful the UNIT forces were, they did manage to kill the big monsters. I was expecting Rover (who was an albino shoggoth) to go down eventually, but I didn't think the Star-spawn would be slain before it even had a chance to fight. This particular Star-spawn was a lot tougher than most, as I rolled extremely well on its stats. It had 115 HP, 10 points of armor, and a 16d6 damage bonus. It had SIZ 170 (that's a 6th edition stat, not 7th ;) ), which meant anyone firing at it had +70 to the base chance to hit. The assault rifles carried by the UNIT soldiers wouldn't normally be very effective, but two soldiers rolled natural 1s, and critical hits bypass armor. One critical hit probably wouldn't have killed it by itself, but it could have brought it down enough to make it killable with enough regular damage. It would most likely have fled and healed up (it regenerates 3 HP per round), which would have preserved it alive but allowed the mansion team time to escape.

On the other hand, UNIT failed in its objective to get the Deep Ones and their hybrids out of Dunwich. UNIT should have won handily, with only Rover posing a huge threat. However, Elliot's capture changed all of that. He had made multiple escape attempts and almost gotten away a couple of times, but even a trained escapologist can't escape all the time. Victoria Lake's spell made him fall in love with her, and he warned her and her family that the military was going to attack soon in order to convince them to abandon Dunwich so that Victoria would stay safe. However, Y'Hali had other plans, and now she knew that the enemy was coming, which made all of the difference. Ordinarily, the Deep Ones would not have figured that the rescue of Dr. Kirby would be quickly followed by a large-scale military invasion. Their security would have been heightened, but they would still most likely have been caught flat-footed and overwhelmed. Any Deep Ones that didn't flee to the sea would have been exterminated, and the Brigadier would have imprisoned the hybrids in a concentration camp (with genetic testing performed by Dr. Kirby to determine who was tainted). In short, it would have gone down much like the 1928 raid on Innsmouth.

Instead we got something more like the 1942 raid on Dieppe. It still could have gone either way, and UNIT came very close to winning outright in spite of all the screwups. The two-pronged assault on the caves was doomed to failure. The Deep Ones and hybrids teamed up to cast Wave of Oblivion to sink the destroyer, and the Deep Ones breached the submarine's hull to wreck it. The marines did reach the sea entrance to the caves, but that's when the summoned shark and the Deep One/shark hybrid slaughtered some of them. Had UNIT not been in such a rush, they could have waited for low tide and waded into the cave, thus avoiding that initial onslaught. The surviving marines ran into Deep Ones and Emilia Lake (who is a Beloved of Cthulhu hybrid) once they entered the caves. They killed some Deep Ones and wounded Emilia, but in the end they were butchered. One of the marines had gone insane from seeing Emilia and was captured unharmed, and Sergeant Valentine Hale took a nasty wound from an impaling spear that knocked him unconscious, so they both awoke as prisoners. The squad that entered through the secret stairs under the ruins fared a little better at first, at least until they ran into Rover. The UNIT soldiers actually took off more than half of its HP in the first round, but after that they couldn't manage much and got eaten. Unfortunately, Sergeant Ecarg had left two of the soldiers and most of the rockets guarding the entrance, or they might have made a difference in the battle. Instead, they later ended up as shoggoth chow when Rover attacked them from behind. Leonek tried to arm explosives which would have blown up Rover (not to mention collapsing the throne room), but he critically failed, ruining the detonators and making the explosives useless. He and Carla managed to flee, but the Deep Ones chased them and trapped them with one of their fishing nets, so they were imprisoned with the other survivors.

The Brigadier was wise to heavily defend the Ship Inn, which he had turned into a command post, but the defenses weren't quite enough. After the caves were secured, Rover and all of the uninjured Deep Ones came at the inn from the rear while Y'Hali and one of the hybrids waited in front for their chance, with a couple of Royal Navy hostages that Elliot had conveniently asked them to rescue from the sinking destroyer. Rover led the way, providing cover for the Deep Ones. The squad guarding the back door was broken. One went insane and fled into the inn, five were engulfed, and Rover missed the other, who also made it into the inn. Two of the soldiers who were swallowed managed to get free, as Rover bit off more than he could chew. Salem, left in command of the inn's defenses, sent four of the soldiers guarding the front around to the back to help. They took an APC, but when Rover rolled into view, three of them went mad. The fourth fought back using the APC's machine gun, along with the two soldiers on foot who had escaped from Rover. The machine gun scored a critical hit with 18 bullets, shredding Rover to bits. If that had been a regular hit, it would have only caused 18 damage (1 per bullet), but that would have been enough to finish off Rover after all of the times it had been shot. Then the UNIT survivors headed for the back of the inn and saw the Deep One horde. This drove the APC driver insane, and he fled in terror by driving the APC away down the road (taking his equally crazy comrades in arms with him). As a result, the Deep One horde was able to breach the rear of the inn and storm the command post while a few remained outside to take care of the two foot soldiers who remained. The fight inside the inn was going UNIT's way. Salem and the rest of the guards out front rushed through the inn to the rear, leaving the lobby unguarded. This was the opening Y'Hali needed. There were only a few Deep Ones left standing by the time her group showed up with their hostages. Y'Hali bluffed and acted like the inn was surrounded, but they had shot their load. The remaining UNIT forces could have mopped up the Deep Ones as long as they didn't care what happened to the hostages, but they surrendered.

The mansion team fared the best. They managed to sneak inside the mansion without alerting the Star-spawn (which was hiding behind the mansion, the only thing big enough to conceal it). The Star-spawn would not have been present had the Deep Ones not had advance warning, because Father John Stewart needed time to contact it. The team could have gone on to confront Bertie Lake and Father Stewart had news of the inn's capture not changed their plans. They decided to withdraw, but the Star-spawn (which had been alerted by a gunshot) was waiting outside for them. Virgil Soames covered their retreat with a helpful spell that produced an obscuring mist, but it had a short duration. Only a few of them had a chance to get over the wall by the time it dissipated. One of the soldiers went insane with homicidal mania, so he fired at the Star-spawn, thus attracting its attention. Otherwise, it might not have noticed them. All but a few of them got over the wall by the time it arrived, and that's when the lucky UNIT soldiers cut it down before it had a chance to attack. But at least it drove them nuts first!

Confronting the two of them alone probably would not have been the best idea. They both know spells and had full Magic Points, so it's best you got out of there with the goodies. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

So far nobody has rolled for Sanity rewards or skill increases. If you don't do so in the next few days, I'll roll for you.

Just got back from camping. Not sure its worth bothering to roll for Elliot, doubt he will be a playable character in the future.

I did have a blast being forced onto the "other" side. But I didn't mean to make things so difficult for the rest of you.

I really had no idea if they would attack or not, I just figured that is what I would do if I was the general, so I went down that path. No idea it would let them summon a star spawn. Really surprised they managed to kill it.

I really enjoyed it. Sorry guys, but I think Elliot got the worst end of this deal in the end. Being a stud breeder for a deep one. Hahahahaha.

I liked my IC experience Mr. Handy created with every post reply. I am not sure of How to go about leveling of RP character or reusing my char.
If there is not any task that can be assigned to Newton, he would be working somewhere in Unit hq behind desk with his trusty coffee bin machin nabbed from Inn.

On other thought, is it possible for me to investigate Newtons' pre-U.N.I.T story somewhere, using rolls. I just wake him up from that place to be part of U.N.I.T team.

You did great, Ben, you really nailed our arses. But I bet that'll be Elliot's future now too. ;)

Let's hope next game neither of us will turn out to be dubious :D

I think Tobias Maddox will be returning to his own company R.I.O.T., a fledgling company of his father's, Tobias Vaughn of International Electromatics. After successfully infiltrating U.N.I.T. and acquiring alien technology to further R.I.O.T.'s weapon technology, he is sure to be amply rewarded; hopefully with a lucrative but safe consultancy job. Thanks for another great episode, Mr. Handy!
sanity check,2d4=6, 1d6,2d20=[6], [10, 11] = 33 in total. Tobias feels pretty good about himself!

I'm glad all of you enjoyed the adventure!

Leonek, Dr. Kirby will gladly go out on a date with you!

Elliot could possibly be playable in the event of a followup to this adventure, but it would be quite some time before that happens. You can go ahead and make the rolls anyway.

It will probably be years before there's another adventure in which Newton can participate, but feel free to roll for his increases. I posted full instructions above in this post. The mystery of who he is will have to remain a mystery for now. Finding that out could be an adventure in its own right.

Tobias, please don't forget to roll for your skill increases too.

I'll probably roll for the rest of the characters' Sanity and skill increases this weekend, and I should be able to set up the forum for the new game then as well.

*coughs*
Hey, sorry about the unannounced extended leave...
According to every service provider, there just wasn't enough internet for me to get in on it.
I couldn't make this up if I tried.
And my laptop broke, so I couldn't leach off Starbucks nearby. I am finally back, though I'd understand if you were hesitant to let me back in. Flaky is flaky, regardless of reason.
Also, hi again!

Welcome back! Of course you can return, though The Shadow Over Dunwich has concluded in your absence. Feel free to read the rest of the story and roll for your Sanity and skill increases. Also, if you're interested, you can create a new character and join the next adventure from the beginning. The Brotherhood of Death is a Cthulhu Invictus scenario set in Rome in 44 BC.

I'm down, that sounds awesome and probably like it'll kill me in a fantastic fashion.

*Edit:
I'm on mobile, so character creation will be a bit of a pain. Might require a bit more time.
