Character Creation/Rules

The following rules are for character creation for new characters from 1985 (use the Modern era character sheet):
  • Roll 3d6 each for STR, CON, POW, DEX, and APP.
  • Roll 2d6+6 each for SIZ and INT.
  • Roll 3d6+3 for EDU.
  • Do not roll for personal wealth. This is irrelevant for this adventure, as UNIT will issue you equipment for this assignment.
You can use Invisible Castle to make your rolls, both for character creation and in the game. You'll need to register and log in there in order to make entries in the Note section describing what you're rolling, but it's free. Be sure to use the same spelling for your character's name consistently to make it easier to look up old rolls.

Those are the only rolls you need to make for character creation. You are free to distribute the 3d6 rolls amongst the five stats that are rolled on 3d6, as well as to choose which 2d6+6 roll goes to SIZ and which to INT. EDU can be raised by making your character older. If you're still not satisfied with your rolls, let me know and we'll work something out. If your rolls are abnormally low, I may permit a reroll of the entire set.

You'll also need to decide on your character's age. The minimum age allowed is EDU+6, but you can always choose to make your character older. For every 10 full years above the minimum, you get +1 to your EDU (which also gets you an extra 20 occupational skill points). However, for every full 10 years above 40 (i.e., starting at age 50), you must reduce one of the following stats by 1: STR, CON, DEX, or APP.

Your character has the following derived stats:
Idea: INT x 5
Luck: POW x 5
Know: EDU x 5 (maximum of 99)
Damage Bonus: Calculate STR+SIZ and consult the following table
  • 12 or less: -1d6
  • 13-16: -1d4
  • 17-24: +0
  • 25-32: +1d4
  • 33 or more: +1d6
Maximum Hit Points: (CON+SIZ)/2 (round fractions up)
Maximum Magic Points: POW
Starting Sanity: POW x 5

You get 20 x EDU occupational skill points that can only be used to increase skills for your chosen profession. You also get 10 x INT hobby skill points that can be spent to increase any skills (even the ones for your occupation if you really want). The only skill that cannot be raised is Cthulhu Mythos, which always starts at 0%. The other skills have base levels of 1% or higher, and the points you spend add to those base levels. To see the list of skills and their starting levels, see the Quick Start rules for Call of Cthulhu: http://www.chaosium.com/article.php?story_id=87 (the modern list is identical, except that it also contains Computer Use and Electronics, both of which have a 1% base)

Check the "Your Career in U.N.I.T." thread for possible character concepts and lists of occupational skills. If you have something else in mind, let me know your character concept and I can give you a suitable list of occupational skills. The occupational skills for many professions are listed in the rulebook. Some of these lists allow you to choose one or two of your occupational skills. Just make sure it's within reason for your chosen occupation.

I won't be imposing a cap for starting skills, but you should justify any exceptionally high skills you have in your character background. 75% in a skill means that you're an expert. 90% means that you're one of the best in the world. UNIT does employ some of the best of the best, so it's quite possible for your character to be that good at a particular skill. Spend all your skill points during character creation, as they're of no use once the game is underway.

Ssior.27, I received your character and there are only a couple of minor things that need fixing. First, to raise your EDU from 11 to 13 requires a minimum age of 37. Second, you only spent 110 out of 130 hobby skill points, so please let me know where you want to put the other 20. Once that's taken care of, I can post your completed character sheet.

Ah, right. The age change is fine. I failed my math today.

The 20 skill points, I believe, went to Physics, I believe. A little more theoretical course work outside the realms of his occupation.

That makes sense. Physics is actually an occupational skill for a pilot, but there's no reason you can't spend hobby points on it. You're all set! I'll post your character sheet.

OK I'm going to post what I have. It's my first time making a character so please be sure my maths were correct (between the Quick Start that was posted, the summary in this thread, and the rule book, I'm pretty sure I have things right, but I'm paranoid :) ). Rolls can be found here. Also, I did not mark my non-default skills, as I was not able to find mention of that in the book.

Background: In 1981, Poland's leaders declared martial law to crack down on political dissent. Thousands were swept up and arrested because of their pro-democracy views. Fearing that they would be targets, the Novak family crept westward, not stopping until the defectors were safe in England. Leonek Novak joined the Army--in part, to offer "proof" that his family were loyal to their new home. He joined the Sappers in the Corps of Royal Engineers, and after leaving the Royal School of Military Engineering he was assigned to duty with U.N.I.T. His posting is more out of what he represents--the former Warsaw Pact child, now a symbol of the United Nations' ideals--than out of any great skill or impression that he's made. Currently he works as a mechanic in the motor pool and occasionally acts as a driver for personnel or visiting VIPs.

Alrighty, this is what I have so far http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/search/1096510. Right now, I don't have the time to distribute my points or write up a personal background for my character, but so far I'm thinking of being a Medical Officer aged 23 at least. Is it alright if I picked Spot Hidden as one of my Occupational Skills?

Welcome aboard, DetectiveSocks! Yes, Spot Hidden can work as an occupational skill for a medical officer. It would be useful in examining patients, and also useful for performing surgery.

Take your time building your character. It'll be at least a week before we start, probably longer.

Name: Salem Shields
Age: 23
Sex: Male
Occupation: Medical Officer
Current Residence: UNIT Officers' Quarters at UNIT UK's headquarters
Colleges: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Birthplace: Boston, Massachusetts
Home Era: 1980’s

Characteristics:

Sanity: 60
Phobias/Mental Disorders: None
Maximum Sanity: 99
Hit Points: 12
Magic Points: 12
Damage Bonus: 0

Background:

Salem and his twin brother Isaac grew up without a father, for their father has either been drafted to the Vietnam War or dodged the draft and fled from the country without even knowing he had any sons. Salem and Isaac spend most of their time growing up at a daycare in a children hospital, for their mother was a nurse. It gave the brothers a very surreal sense of mortality, but they would still invest their time into making friends despite how some children were terminally ill. Salem has currently finished his medical studies at MIT and was approached by U.N.I.T. for his expertise in Medicine and Biology, especially that of Zoology to identify the structure and physiology of species. With a strong desire to help people, Salem took the opportunity without question, with the promise of helping people with his expertise around the world.

Looks great! Salem will fit in very nicely on this adventure, and I'm sure his skills will be useful. There are just a couple of corrections. You don't need to edit the sheet; you can just let me know by posting here what the changes are. You don't actually live in Dunwich (hardly anybody does any more), and you've never been there. You'd live in the UNIT Officers' Quarters at UNIT UK's headquarters, most likely. Also, you've only spent a total of 479 skill points, but you have 500 in all to spend. Please spend the remaining 21 points on any skill or skills you like.

Salem will also need a military rank. He is an M.D., though at his age he'd only have just gotten his degree months ago and will still be an intern, so as such his rank would be at least Captain - although at his age, it wouldn't be any higher than that, so Captain it is.

Right, so my rolls are here http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/search/1100166/
The EDU is pretty lousy, and the rolls i got for SIZ and INT are 8 (lowest possible) and 16. So, given these rolls i''m thinking of one of two possibilities:
Soldier: a big dumb brute for a bit of muscle in the team (SIZ 16, INT 8)
Covert Operative: intelligent, very small (SIZ 8, INT 16), with a criminal background in theft/burglary. So locksmith, climbing, sneaking type skills.
I'm wondering which would be a better fit in the existing group. The Soldier might be less demanding for my first time, though he Covert Op might be more fun.
Thoughts?

You can always raise your EDU by up to 2 points, since the minimum age you can be right now is 15 before you sacrifice any of your characteristics after 40 years old. Though of course, it'd be kinda cool if you were a 15 year old covert op, hahaha.

Re: Character Creation/Rules

by Mr. Handy
Yes, you can always make your character older than the minimum age. You're not limited to just +2 EDU points, by the way. For every ten full years above the minimum age you make your character, you get +1 EDU, so this can be quite a lot if you don't mind being older. The penalties to other stats don't kick in at 40, though. You lose 1 point to the phsyical stat of your choice for every ten full years above 40, so the first penalty doesn't hit until 50.

Either a soldier or a covert operative could be very useful, depending on how the team approaches things. It's really a matter of your own preference, so it's entirely up to you.

Background: Valerie was born in 1925 in the Home Counties. In 1943, at age 18, she applied to join the WAAF, but a recruiter noted her excellent French (a product of many family holidays), and she was diverted to SOE, specifically F section. Trained to parachute into France and liaise with the Resistance, D-Day thwarted her chances of getting into action, and the rest of her war was devoted to training and translation work.

Post-war, she settled down, married a nice young Lieutenant, and never told anyone anything. 30-odd years later, newly widowed, she takes a civil receptionist job at a military base for pin money, and to keep herself busy. At some point her personnel file gets matched up with the old SOE records (which UNIT of course have appropriated), and a very debonair Major appears at her desk and asks if she'd like to do some a little more, ah, active.

Now she alternates between a little light filing, and going to potter around sites of suspicious activity and ask innocent sounding questions.

There are a few things that need fixing, but after that you'll be all set. Valerie needs a last name. Also, at age 60 she would have 2 penalty points to her physical stats, not just 1. You can, however, fix this by simply making her 59 instead, as the second point kicks in at age 60. She can still be born in 1925 as long as it's late in 1925 (the story begins on September 5, 1985). You have 160 hobby skill points available, but you've spent only 159, so you may add that extra skill point to any skill of your choice. You do not need to edit your character sheet. You can just let me know which skill.

Hi,

Here's my character too, though now I'm worrying now with the arrival of Valerie I'm duplicating skills that already exist in the group. Though mine is more of a cat burglar type, who isn't supposed to be seen. I took some liberties with the professional skills (damn, the bold didn't come out) I can always revert to my big dumb soldier if need be. Have a peruse and let me know. Fell in with a bad crowd, which was when I started to realize what I was good at. You see, I got a talent for getting into places if you know what I mean. Sure it helps being small and agile, but you gotta use your brain too, right? So I’m getting by doing a few jobs. Sure it’s bad, but I gotta survive you know. And little sis ain’t well, she needs me to take care of her. I get rep, people want me to get hold of files, evidence and such from so-called secure places. It got out of control, and maybe I got cocky. I got caught, and I mean red-handed. Looked like just another faceless government office, I’d never heard of U.N.I.T. That's no probllem. It doesn't hurt to have two covert operatives (we have three engineer-types, after all). Redundant skills can be useful just in case something happens to one of you. Also, some skills (such as Sneak) are better when more people have them. There are number of significant differences between your characters anyway.

You've underspent by 10 hobby points by my count, so please spend the additional 10 points on any skill or skills you wish. Again, you don't need to edit your character sheet. You can just let me know where you want to add the points. Don't worry about equipment; it'll be issued early in the adventure.

Great,
Can you at 5 to listen and 5 to spot hidden please.
Sorry the character sheet is a bit confusing, when I pasted from word it lost the bold and italics. If you want I can let you know the professional skills. I also supplemented some of the professional skills with a few hobby points to add to the confusion.
For equipment, a few tools of the trade for picking locks, breaking in, cracking safes etc would be useful :D
Thanks
Jim

Ok, so I made his professional skills from his life of crime as Climb, Conceal, Hide, Listen, Locksmith, Sneak, Spot Hidden, and I added Handgun from his UNIT training. I topped most of these up with Hobby points. I kind of wanted to make him a specialist in a specific field.
Hope this all checks out. Looking forward to seeing him on the Cast of Characters!

I had thought you'd used the Covert Operative's occupational skills in the Your Career in U.N.I.T. thread, which are identical to the ones for Criminal in the rulebook, but it worked out the same either way, so it makes no difference. Your character sheet is now posted. I just need those few corrections for Valerie, and we may have one or two more new players before we start.

Mr. Handy wrote:There are a few things that need fixing, but after that you'll be all set.
Every time I try to come up with a surname, I say Valerie and then get Singleton :)

However, I'll go with Soames for that Home Counties feel.

I'll stick with 60 and knock a point off Dex.

I'll add a point to Gardening. I'm determined to work that skill in somehow.

To make me more distinct from Elliott, I'll also take 10 off Locksmith and add it to disguise if that's ok. We don't have much overlap, apart from Sneak, and it will make plenty of sense that both are assigned to a mission.

I actually know who Valerie Singleton is, in spite of being an American. They often have related Blue Peter segments as special features on classic Doctor Who DVDs, and I remember her from some of them.

Valerie Soames it is, then. It's funny, but we've been thinking along similar wavelengths, though Suffolk is somewhat further north. Wait until you see the names of some of the NPCs in this scenario. It could just be a coincidence, but there might be an opportunity for me to work it into the story.

The changes work fine, and I'll post your character sheet shortly. Now that the characters are all ready and I haven't heard from other potential new players, I'll try to get this started. If I can't get the IC threads up tonight, Thursday night looks good.

Jimacol, do you have any thoughts on whether Elliot and Valerie know each other? It could range from them making a bit of an "odd couple" team, to him never having encountered her in the field and thinking she was just the tea lady.

Mr Handy, I'm glad to hear that Dr Who is educational as well as entertaining :)

I'm thinking Mr Soames was a Home Counties type, and they settled just outside London after the war, but they had retired or semi-retired to the Suffolk area before his death. It seems to be a pretty common pattern - the area is heaving with retirees and second homes. I've put down "Southwold" as her home town, which actually not too far from Dunwich. It could just as easily be one of the coastal towns further north though, like Great Yarmouth.

Well I note from her background that she "does a little filing" for UNIT. I think maybe she was the one who caught Elliott stealing files from a UNIT office, and he could never get his head round how he got past all the security but was foiled by the tea lady. Since then the wayward Elliott has grown fond of her, like the mother he never really had, but is still unaware of her true role within UNIT. (Maybe that applies to the rest of the team as well?)

How does that sound as a start?

Sounds good. I think a certain amount of mothering will be in her nature. Her daughter married a Frenchman, don't you know, and moved to a little house near Bordeaux. She tries to get over there a couple of times a year, but she can't leave her prize Hydrangeas for more than a week or so. So she likes to keep an eye on some of the quieter young people, make sure they're doing fine.

I tried to send this to Mr Handy for vetting, but the PM system is messing up. Here is my character concept, I think I've calculated everything correctly.

Invisible Castle Rolls: http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/3960693/ I didn't roll particularly well  The only real problem is the low POW, I think.

Sergeant Dipprasad Dharmadhoj

Image

'Jai Mahakali, Ayo Gorkhali!'
('Victory to goddess Mahakali, the Gurkhas are here!')

Sergeant Dipprasad Dharmadhoj, former soldier in the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Gurkha Rifles serving as part of the British Army in the War in Afghanistan. He comes from a long line of Gurkha soldiers serving in the British Army, dating from an ancestor who first fought under contract with the East India Company in the Pindaree War of 1817. His grandfather fought in North Africa against the Nazis with considerable distinction, and Dipprasad has also sought to be just as honorable a soldier as he was. His father spent most of his life serving in the 26th Gurkha Brigade sationed in Hong Kong, where Dipprasad spent his childhood until his family moved to the United Kingdom following handover in 1997.

His career in the military took a sudden turn in the mountains of Tora Bora in 2011, when a firefight broke out with Taliban mujahideen. During the battle, Dipprasad witnessed things that he could not understand or explain, and he suffered from tremendous mental shock watching a crippled old Afghan man cut through dozens of good British men with otherworldly magic. Despite this, he fought bravely and well, eliminating the threat before the summoning was completed. He was honorably discharged.

In the time that followed, he felt he had lost his mission in life. A taste of opium acquired in Afghanistan threatened to blossom into a full heroin addiction, but when Dipprasad was at his lowest point he happened to discover an secret diary kept by his grandfather during his time fighting in Libya. His grandfather's confession of unworldly encounters in the desert and their eventual defeat disturbed Dipprasad at first, but gave him strength in the end. He failed to kick the heroin completely, but he has become functional and motivated once more. He dedicates his each waking day to honoring the memory of his grandfather and the glory of Great Kali, Hindu goddess of time and death.

Welcome, Tormsen! Those rolls are horrible, even worse than some of the rolls I've had. I'd be willing to give you a mulligan on those if you wanted one. I had intended for you to take over the character of Elliot Webb (who has much better stats). At this stage, it would be tricky, though not impossible, to introduce a new character. If you still want to play this one, I'll work something out.

There are some changes that would be needed. Since this adventure takes place in 1985, your background will need to be adjusted accordingly. Your character would also need to be affiliated with UNIT UK at the present time, but that shouldn't be an issue. Your EDU score is an 8 due to your character's age rather than a 6. Your starting Sanity would be 20, not 18; you'd have a hard enough time as it is even with the extra 2 points. Your Cthulhu Mythos starts at 0. You may have seen some weird things in your background, but you don't know what it means yet. You've also overspent slightly on your skill points. You have 160 occupational skill points, but you've spent 163. You have 110 hobby skill points, but you've spent 117.

Hmm, OK. I will check out Elliot Webb and get back to you. I like my current character, but I might keep him around for a future game if it doesn't make sense to drop him in.

Take your time. I'm sure you can always use the character you've built in another game later if you decide to play Elliot Webb. Take your time, but if you do decide to play him, you'll need to read Missing in Action, Infiltration, and Ghostwriter (his current thread) in order to catch up. You may read the Introduction, but please do not read any of the other In Character threads that don't involve your character. If you play Elliot, you may post in Ghostwriter as soon as you've caught up.

Those rolls would work nicely for a Covert Operative. Valerie Soames has much worse stats, and she manages just fine as one, and even Elliot Webb's stats are lower overall.

Hello!
Thank you for inviting me into the campaign at this late stage, I have decided to take the role of a U.N.I.T medical officer (Is that the correct term for the rank?), who is fairly new to the organisation.
History:
Dr. Gordon Baxter has dedicated the majority of his adult life to the armed forces and medicine. As a student, Baxter studied medicine at UCL, with the intent of becoming a General Practitioner. However, after his third year he enrolled into the Armed forces, with the intent of finishing his studies at some time during his service.
Over time, Dr. Baxter built up a solid reputation as a reliable medical officer showing a decisive and straight forward approach to his job. Baxter finally completed his doctorate during his service. Dr Baxter served during the Falklands War, but saw no ‘action’, he was mainly based in the HQ’s infirmary, tending to the wounding and advising the other medical officers.
6 months ago, Dr Baxter received an invitation to U.N.I.T HQ, after a recommendation from his superior officer, with the prospect of serving the Organisation.
Personal:
Dr Baxter has a wife and two teenage children, who still live in a suburb of West London. Baxter is an average height (5’11) with a slight paunch and cropped hair, generally well dressed, his trimmed dark brown beard is a source for much of his wife’s irritation. Baxter dislikes conflict, and is quite proud to say that, although trained, he has never had to fire a weapon at a living soul.

Name: Doctor Gordon Baxter
Age: 44
Sex: Male
Occupation: Medical Officer
Current Residence: UNIT UK's headquarters
Colleges: University College London
Birthplace: Kent
Home Era: 1980’s
Equipment: I presume U.N.I.T provides all the supplies required? Otherwise generic field medical kit and a hand gun.

Here are his stats, if there are any mistakes, invariably there will be! Please let me know. As I still have not been able to register on Invisible Castle I have simply linked the rolls. If this does not work I’ll try and find a more appropriate solution.

You''re welcome, and your character looks great! There are only a few minor things that need fixing.

The minimum age is EDU+6, which in your case was 24. You get +1 EDU for each full 10 years above that you make your character, so if you want EDU 20, you can just make him 44 instead of 41. Alternatively, you can reduce your EDU to 19.

Yes, the maximum score for Know (and for Own Language) is 99.

Your Hit Points are 12 rather than 11, the average of CON and SIZ (rounded up).

By my count, you've only spent 376 occupational skill points, giving you an extra 24 to spend (or just 4 if you decide to drop your EDU to 19).

Equipment will be issued to you, though you can make requests for special equipment. A medical kit and a handgun are standard issue.

As a doctor, your rank will be at least Captain in most branches of the armed forces. In the Royal Navy, you'd have a rank of Lieutenant or higher (like Lt. Harry Sullivan), but the naval rank of Lieutenant is the equivalent to the rank of Captain in the Army, RAF, or Royal Marines. With your age and experience, you could easily be a Major or Lt. Colonel if you wish (Lt. Commander or Commander if in the Royal Navy). You may choose whichever of those ranks you like.

If possible, I’d like to start on the lowest rank, Captain, as I don’t feel experienced enough to start giving out any orders! If that’s ok?
Thanks again.

She looks great! The only thing that needs fixing is that it looks like you didn't spend enough occupational skill points, and your Know score should be 90 rather than 80 (her Own Language score, presumably English, will be the same). You get a total of 360 occupational skills points with 18 EDU, and you spent a total of 335, presuming your occupational skills are Dodge, First Aid, Hide, Listen, Mechanical Repair, Rifle, Sneak, and Shotgun. You have another 25 points to add to these skills. Just let me know which of your occupational skills are getting how many points and I'll post the completed sheet in the Character Sheets thread. You should also type up a background for her and post it here.

I tend to forget to change things after I edit my age, thanks for catching that!

Carla is a soldier through and through, insisting to stay in the field and personally annihilate whatever gets her in way. She's been trained in the use of rifles, but she far prefers shotguns. She's been in UNIT longer than most of the people she works with, and considering their line of work, this has started several silly rumours about her age, place of origin, and intent. She's since halted trying to put a stop to them, and now messes with the youngest members by pretending to make phones to her home planet. Though she seems cold and hard at first glance, she's actually quite nice and has a warm heart. Rumours that she spends her free time writing poems is treason.
She's seen plenty of crazy stuff, and is pretty calloused to most of it at this point, and doubts anything will faze her any more. Unlike most of her peers, she's practiced with Operating most Heavy Machine- from tractors to even a few tanks. She repairs and assembles several types of weapons while wearing a blindfold in her spare time.

Edit: final char sheet update, hopefully

Art(Compose Poem) isn't one of your occupational skills. I'd allow it, but you're not likely to get a chance to use it. You might want to move those 16 points somewhere else.

Your character sheet has been posted. You should start by reading this post in the thread Revenge of the Creature. Read that thread to the end, which isn't far, but don't read the parts of the thread before that, as you weren't present. Carla is one of the two UNIT soldiers who bursts in. Once you finish that thread, you can read and post in The Three Doctors whenever you're ready. Don't read the other IC threads that your character isn't in until after the adventure is over. The sole exception is the Introduction thread in Episode 1, which everyone may read. Have fun!

I'll take over Leonek Novak. if you could explain how to use invisiblecastle that would be great.

Great, he's yours! To use Invisible Castle, you can follow the instructions in this post. The instructions are dated. Apparently new people cannot register on Invisible Castle due to a bug, and it hasn't been updated in three years. However, you can still use the site. Invisible Castle now has a Campaign Name field, so you can put The Shadow Over Dunwich there and simply put your character's name by itself in the Name field. Unfortunately, you can no longer use that or the Note field unless you're logged into the site.

To catch up on Leonek's story so far, you'll want to read the following threads in the order below:
Episode 1: Missing in Action, Accident and Emergency, Checking In, Regrouping, Back at the Inn
Episode 2: Reunion, Bottoms Up, Next Steps, On the Trail, Beneath the Surface, Alone in the Dark
Episode 3: The Underwater Menace, Revelations, Fury from the Deep, Warriors of the Deep, Fish or Cut Bait
Episode 4: The Thing that Should Not Be, Best Laid Plans, Team Bullding, The File Room, Intelligence, Selections

Once you've finished catching up, you may start posting in character for Leonek in Selections, his current thread. Have fun!

Welcome, dustakr! Everything looks great. It may be a few days before I have time to post your completed sheet in the Character Sheets thread, but you can post in Briefing any time once you've finished reading it. Have fun!

Here's the technical data on newest...victim U.N.I.T. will be deploying.

I'll wait for the GM to vet the stats before doing the backgroup writeup.

Welcome, and everything checks out perfectly! Once you've posted your background, I'll add your character sheet to the Character Sheets thread when I have time (which might not be until next week). I'll also issue you standard equipment, and you can request additional equipment when you post your background here. The rolls may be low average, but you can make your character interesting regardless of your stats.

In order to catch up, you'll need to read the threads Briefing, One If By Land, and Move Out! (your current thread). It's assumed that your character is one of the many UNIT soldiers who was present there. Once you've read all of that, you may start posting in Move Out! whenever you're ready, and you may also make the Spot Hidden roll. You may not read any of the other In Character threads that your character isn't in until the adventure is over (with the optional exception of Introduction in Episode 1). Have fun!

Background: Staff Sgt. Donald Forney was born in the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar while WW2 was raging. His father was a career military officer stationed at British Forces Gibraltar who wished his son followed his footsteps. Sadly Donald performed mediocrely at school, barely getting the grades for a High School diploma, and afterwards failed to enter both college and the military academy. In a rebellious fit he then stubbornly refused to listen to his father, who wanted him to join the military anyway as a regularprivate. After a few years doing odd jobs and failing to get a career started Donald finally relemted and volunteered for the Royal Army, where he has spent the last 20 years in a career that has been as exemplary as it has been uneventful. The only fields of excellence mentioned on his performace reports are the capacity to keep his mouth shut and skill with rifle (which he never had to use except in trainign exercises).

Most of Donald's time if the army (by sheer luck or due to influence from his father with higher-ups) has been spent in Gilbratar, with its good weather and plenty of sunshine. He has hardly ever left the istmus except for a few NATO training operations in France, leave holidays on Southern Spain, Portugal and Morrocco and the odd trip to Britain (which he finds to wet, cold and dark for his tastes).

Recently, due solely to the legth of his career and lack of blots on his military record, Donald has been promoted to Staff Sargeanrt, but the promotion came with with a re-deployment to mainland Britain and a transfer to the ranks of U.N.I.T.

Note for the GM: I gave Donald his NCO rank based on what I found online about the structure of the British Armed Forces. If it is too high let me know.

Great! I've posted your character sheet, and you may jump in whenever you're ready. I made a few minor edits to the background, mostly spelling corrections. The UK's Army is called the British Army, though the other branches of service are called Royal (Navy, Marines, Air Force).

Your rank is fine, and fitting for someone who has been in the Army for so long. You'll be in command of a squad of UNIT soldiers on this mission, and your squad will accompany the Brigadier.
