Norbury At Night

The night sky is bright with a bomber's moon that provides an unearthly glow about the dark, fog-shrouded streets. The stars, rarely glimpsed when London was lit up, now straggle across the heavens though they, too, are mostly shrouded by fog and smoke. The streets are dark but not yet quiet at 10pm due to the sounds of people being let out of a nearby pub with a brief flash of light. For those in the know, or who have local experience, this suburb is well-patrolled by the Norbury 5th Battalion of the Home Guard that is known for its efficiency and bravery ever since the Blitz began. Odds are that is why the drunks are so cautious as they slip out, despite their alcoholic touched minds. As you continue along your way, you hear the first Aid Raid Siren give warning about oncoming bombers.
Show,Navigate to know where the nearest air raid shelter is. The nurse should head to the First Aid Post where her ambulance is parked as that is where she'd be headed anyway.

William Cray lurches from The Hensley Arms, purposely ignoring the catcalls from behind him.

"I wouldn't do you even if you did have two legs, love!"
"Cray, I have you on tab for two quid now! I'll be seeing those coins tomorrow, you hear?"
"All mouth and no trousers, that 'un! Did you hear what he said to me?"

The voices blend together behind him and he tastes sour whiskey backing up on him. He stumbles to a nearby alley and, making sure there are no Fifthers about, retches the evening's excesses quietly against a wall. William recovers himself and smooths his lank hair against his scalp. Time for the sack, he thinks and, straightening his posture as best as he is able, begins to heel-toe it towards the general direction of his flat.

The air raid siren doesn't register at first, as it's competing with the general clangour in his head. After a few seconds and several huddled forms moving quickly about in the street, William's brain recognizes the danger. "Damn it, not now", he mutters through clenched teeth. His head swivels with a slight wobble as he tries to orient himself in space. "Now, where's that damnable shelter?"

Irene Carpenter hurries to her ambulance at the First Aid Post the instant she hears the siren. While most Londoners head for shelter at the sound, she has other duties that are worth risking her neck. Once more into the breach... she thinks cheerily.

Florence Bryant looks up at the sky as she hurries towards her First Aid Post to reach her ambulance. She never grows tired of seeing the stars at night, and always finds her gaze irresistibly drawn upwards. Something she doesn't get used to is the sound of the air raid alarm. It always strikes fear into her, with a knot developing in her stomach every time. Still she has work to do, and hurries on her way.

John Brooks was hoping to get across London and to bed; it is late and his eyes hurt from repairing some intricate wiring in low light. As he hears the siren he stops to think for a moment but can't think where the nearest shelter is. He hurries on, hoping to meet someone he can ask directions.

William Cray starts staggering down the street, knowing enough about the pub to know that the owners would take everyone into the shelter and then lock the main doors so no one broke in and stole their liquor like they did a few weeks ago. That ruled out the pub. There were bound to be others, though he couldn't be too sure where. If he hurried down the streets far enough than he should be able to find a shelter somewhere.

Doug sees him hurrying and follows after him, assuming that a local would know where to go and hoping that William was, indeed, a local.

John sees the other two heading off in the same direction. Perhaps they know where the nearest shelter is?

Florence and Irene arrive at the First Aid Post in a sprightly fashion. They're unlucky enough - or is it lucky? - to have an adapted bus rather than an adapted taxi or even an actual ambulance. The bus can fit a lot of people inside but it doesn't control too well on damaged streets. Its parked underneath an open shed - really just a corrugated iron roof on poles - beside an adapted taxi and a ute with their drivers and first aiders already positioned inside.

As they approach, Richie, an ARP warden gives them a look up and down and says to them, "We're in it now. Gerry's coming over to give us a showing, I expect." Richie's a damnable pessimist, enough to make a Women's Volunteer Service volunteer cry into her soup, and perhaps that's why he didn't make the cut despite being a sprightly twenty five. He never has explained fully why he isn't in the Army. "Best go into your ready positions. I'll go man the phones."

"Shouldn't you already be manning them?" snapped Nurse Wigham from the adapted taxi.

"Well now!" said Richie, waving at a 15-year-old boy called Martie who had just appeared with his bicycle ready to fulfill his role as Messenger should the telephones fail. He headed inside, despite the fact that he'd be bound to make a good ambulance driver - having his license and all that - rather than acting as the telephonist and administrator. There were enough people for that sort of role. No need to waste a strong enough, able-bodied man.

Martie looked over at the ambulance drivers sadly before heading inside the short sandbagged corridor that led to the front door of the First Aid Post (built inside an old rotunda once used to serve food on festival days). Doubtless he would cop an ear load about how everyone was doomed and his family were sure to die.

William Cray, leaning heavily on his cane, limps in a zig-zag down the lane, swiveling his head to and fro. There must be a shelter near. Boarded windows and black out tape meet his every glance, so he stumbles onwards. He doesn't notice the small procession following his unsteady trail. "Damn, damn, damn! Where's a bloody sign when you need one?"

The faint baritone buzz of bombers begins to mingle with the sirens and he quickens his faltering steps. He turns down a lane, frantically whipping his head from one side of the street to another, looking vainly either for one of the familiar 'S' signs or for someone who is walking with some direction. Cray's headache intensifies, lending the night a hazy quality that occasionally strobes with pulses of red. Has the bombing already begun, he wonders. Surely not. I would have heard the explosions by now.

"Maybe it won't be so bad tonight Richie," says Florence, calling over to him, before turning around and heading over towards their adapted bus. She spots Irene and says "You got here quickly! We'd best get ready I suppose."

"Yes, chin up, Richie!" says Irene, chipper as always. She never lets Gerry get her down, so she's not about to let him do it either. She grins at Florence. "Hi, Florence. You got here fast yourself. Yes, let's get ready." She gives the ambulance a once over, checks its tires and engine, and making sure there's enough petrol in the tank. Someone else probably already did that, but she's the one who will be driving it and nobody else would be more motivated to do a good job. When she's satisfied with its condition, she gets behind the wheel. In a way, it's a good thing that she's the one issued this lumbering behemoth. She's confident that her driving skills can keep it under control, whereas the others might not be as able. "It does seem a shame that Richie's talents are being wasted. He'd be put to better use as a driver."

Doug quickly catch up with the guy (William) that limps in front of him.
Hey, lad, where is the shelter ? Do you know where the shelter is ?
He turns back to another man that follow them (John) without waiting for an answer from William
Where's the shelter ? Anyone knows where the shelter is ? The f**king Nazis are coming and I really don't want to get blown up.
Doug scans the surrounding, hoping to catch a glimpse of the S sign but if he will not find one soon, he will have to break into a random place.

"Yes we could do with all the good drivers we can get," says Florence, watching as Irene checks over the ambulance. When the checks are complete and Irene gets into her seat Florence climbs in beside her. "I wonder where we're going tonight. I hope things don't get too bad this time." She sighs. "Still, there's a war on, and we've got a job to do. Mustn't complain."

Over his shoulder, William hears a cracking voice inquire, "Hey, lad, where is the shelter? Do you know where the shelter is?" Without breaking his hitching stride, he calls over his shoulder, "I don't bloody well know, do I? Otherwise I wouldn't be on this blasted road in this blasted dark with blasted Germans about to do my head in with blasted falling explosives!" A piece of pavement catches his good foot and he stumbles swiftly forwards, only avoiding a face plant by catching himself on his good knee. His prosthetic skids akimbo to him and he hisses with pain.

"Just perfect. I don't think this night can get any worse." William begins to lever himself up using his cane, briefly noting that his trouser leg has been flayed open and blood is trickling into his shoe.

The buzz of the bombers draws nearer and mixes with the familiar ack-ack sounds of the Antiaircraft gunners, followed by the rumbling whump of the first bombs dropping in the distance. Airplanes shoot past overhead toward the bombers coming from the north west and likely from one of Britain's own air fields. They walk up the tree-lined street of Biggin Hill with its pretty red-roofed townhouses to the left and its red brick half walls around the front yard. There's a slight tilt upward to the street that strains William's leg as they pass a large two-storey red brick scout hall that has been converted into a First Aid Post complete with a bus, a taxi, and a ute standing under a covered shelter as ambulances. There's a sign nearby that reads SHELTER THAT WAY! in big, black lettering with an arrow pointing down the street. They could attempt to take cover in the First Aid Post but it can get quite cramped and gory in there if they bring in any victims of the raid. Odds are the shelter is quite close, otherwise they wouldn't be re-directing people.

Thank goodness for the bomber's moon on the one hand, otherwise they'd have to either use a flashlight and risk drawing attention to themselves, or simply stagger around in the pitch black.

John quickens his pace at the sound of the bombers. He draws near to the two men and reads the sign. He can hear the bombers drawing closer, "Come on, let me give you a hand." he says gruffly and puts out a hand to help steady the young man with the cane as they head towards the shelter. "We'd better hurry."

William feels a wiry hand grasp his elbow and considers shaking it off, but he's too knackered to fight. "Thanks, mate. Sometimes the good leg doesn't want to work like it should." With the assistance of the stranger, he makes better speed toward the shelter.

There's the rapid sound of gunfire and the drone of engines comes closer, leaving a trail of explosions building in crescendo behind them. Curse the people manning the air raid sirens. It looks like it was a case of too little too late. At least the entrance to the air raid shelter can be seen. Its a concrete box, really, with a metal door flanked by sandbags. There's a large building beside it. One of those council estates that they like to cram full of paupers. Its a few dozen feet ahead or more, just over the road, and there's a good chance the planes will fly overhead before they reach it. They're not the only one heading that way. A woman struggles forward with her dog on a leash, coming from her estate and heading straight for the shelter.
Show, you each get one more post before a bomb drops on the shelter. Don't post your entrance but feel free to post reaching the road. The planes are just about overhead.

William grips John's arm tightly and tries to shift his weight to his good leg. "Let's give it a last run, mate," he says. "We'll either die in the street or not." With that he picks up the pace as much as his heavy prosthetic will let him and steers the two of them toward the shelter. He lifts his cane and they begin an awkward, three-legged race against death. As they near the entrance, he yells to the woman with the dog, "Coming through! Get yourself below, now!"

The planes shoot past overhead and as they do so there's a trail of whump whump WHUMP then silence as the air is ripped apart around them by bombs, sending shrapnel whipping around from bricks and windows and chunks of trees and there's a pattern of light and shadow that shreds past their vision and pulses past them. Their feet were on the ground but then they're on their face and sliding and bits of something bite into their skin. Their heads shake and their bones rattle as the explosions crack and shatter past and around them. As the silence settles, a silence punctuated by a shrill sound through their ears, they can start to lift their heads and see that part of the apartment building ahead of them has been knocked down into rubble across the air raid shelter.

Seeing the bombs drop so close, No. 1 Ambulance (the bus) is expected to take a look down the bombed out streets for victims and survivors. The other two ambulances are to await further instructions from known sites.

Johnny lies there, his arms covering his head. He is temporarily deaf with his ears ringing from the pressure of the bomb but he can feel the violence of the explosions as the ground shudders and the air is ripped apart. Once it stops, he lifts his head and, from the light of flames, can see the shelter is covered in rubble. The remains of the apartment looks non too stable and he can't see the woman or the dog. "Come on." He coughs and wipes dirty phlegm from his mouth, he tries to stand but his balance is all shot so he crouches there, shaking his head trying to get his ears clear. He reaches over and shakes the body next to him, then he climbs to his feet and stumbles over to the rubble to see if there is any way into the shelter.

William lays on the ground, face pressed against the gritty pavement, until he's sure that he's not dead. A hurried jostling assures him he isn't, as the stranger that assisted him stands and advances toward the building. He slowly and painfully props himself on one elbow, shaking the brick and plaster dust from his hair with his other hand. His cane lies before him, half-buried in rubble. Cray grabs it and begins the process of righting himself, at the same time looking about to make sure that there isn't someone who needs help nearby.

"Hey," he shouts at John's retreating back, "Thanks for the assist, there, mate."

There's a few men covered in plaster dust and dirt who are heading toward the rubble strewn bomb shelter. There doesn't appear to be anyone, alive or dead, amongst the rubble so perhaps the inhabitants of that place had all evacuated into the shelter as they are meant to. Luckily its an underground shelter so it has a small chance of surviving a nearly direct hit. A woman staggers out from behind a couch that is lying tipped on its side amongst the bricks and broken glass, and she looks around with obvious confusion as blood trickles down the side of her face.

William watches Irene and Florence tend to the injured woman. His right trouser cuff feels heavy with blood and he considers catching a ride in the ambulance. The younger nurse is quite comely. He glances over at the men clearing the bomb shelter entrance and feels quite useless. If only I had two legs, he thought, I could do more to help. He sighs and resigns himself to his deficiency. Limping over to the makeshift triage, he smiles weakly at Irene. "Evening, ladies. I don't suppose one of you has a herringbone and some catgut," he tries to keep the slur from his voice. Unfortunately, he is overbalanced and his prosthetic skids away from him, causing him to land on his his right side with an, "Oof!" Florence readies her torch as well, although she doesn't turn it on yet, because Irene's should provide good visibility through the open trap door. She peers down through the opening to see what she can see. "You can hear multiple people?" she asks Irene. "At least that means they are still alive. Can we get down here do you think?"

John goes to get his bag from where it fell earlier. He dusts it off and looks down into the dark hole, "Here Miss, better let me go first." He gets out his powerful torch and switches it on, it's one with a base so he can use two hands for work. "I'll put it on a table or something to light the area." He mutters that the bomb must have cut the electrics down there.

Irene stands aside so that John can take the lead. "Getting down there shouldn't be an issue, Florence," she says, also squinting into the shelter. "Getting out again might be if there's damage to the stairs, though. I did hear more than one person, screaming in terror, but they stopped when we dug through to the trapdoor. I guess they know they're safe now."

Doug stands in the back, watching the adults speak on what to do next. He takes his jacket from the floor and decides that going down is probably safer then staying in the street.
The name is Doug.
He says to the air as he follows after John.

The silence seems almost deafening after the explosions and screaming. Surely any survivors would have heard their voices by now? Surely someone would have called out to them? The stairs themselves look reasonably undamaged, though this is the emergency entrance and the ordinary entrance may have taken the greater part of the hit.

The woman looks around nervously and grips onto John's arm as he positions himself at the top of the trapdoor. "My father must be down there...."

Her movement disturbs one of the broken bricks which drops onto the stairs and thuds its way all the way down to the floor with that eerie silence, leaving a trail of blood as it went. All eyes turn to where the brick had lain and they see that in the darkness they had moved aside the rubble and had luckily kept their hands clean from the chunks of matted fur and bloody dog meat that had been pulverised by the bricks. Her dog must have been knocked out of her hands by the blast and into the bricks as they fell, leaving it in portions of furry meat strewn across the bricks.

"No," she whimpers, the back of her hand pressed to her mouth.

Oh...gross...
Doug calls and quickly takes another brick from the pile of rubble to cover the dog's body again so they will have not have to look at it again.
It's better that way.
He says to her in a firm voice.

"Poor mite, at least it was quick for the blighter. Come on Miss, I think we'd all be safer down below; the raid hasn't finished yet. John Brooks, electrics and munitions." He holds the torch in one hand, puts his bag over his shoulder and twists around to climb down the steep stairs. He is very tall and it takes a while before his head drops below street level. Gravel and small stones skitter down into the gloom and the torch casts striated dusty beams that bounce off the angled walls. Eventually, "Okay I'm down. I'll light up the steps so you can see your way." The stairway is lit up and drops into a dim pool of light. Beyond that, behind John, it is pitch black.
OOC,If the stairs are not safe then, obviously, he doesn't get down so easily...

There is a smell of brickdust and fear to the air as well as something else like stagnant water. The steps themselves creak beneath their feet but while they were likely never in good condition they're dependable enough. There's a metal ladder behind them. Odds are there are a number of elderly people in that nearby building and so an enterprising fellow built in emergency stairs over the emergency ladder. There's no sign of any blood as John Brooks comes off the bottom step, his light flashing around the shelter briefly. The shelter is broken into three segments with an open doorway in each part. As Irene comes down, her own light flashes off the rubble at the far end of the third segment, revealing that the floor itself has been shattered, breaking a hole into some tunnel below. In this segment there are three bunk beds sunk into the concrete on either side with two benches back to back in the middle. The rest of the shelter is likely the same.

"Careful, looks like a sinkhole must've opened up," says Irene. "Either that or a bomb penetrated the shelter, but if it had there'd be a hole in the ceiling." She cautiously approaches the hole and shines her light into it.

John sets his torch up on a bunk so it lights up the central area and no one can fall down the hole by mistake. He peers into the hole and wonders if it could be medieval or even roman ruins, he's come across them before as London is built over many earlier versions of the city. But Norbury is a long way out from the old part of town. Then he looks around for the power supply to the shelter, hoping to fix it.

Doug is the last to go down, he place a brick near the opening so no one will be able to shut the trap door. Hopefully the Germans will not bomb the same place twice, trapping them under a pile of new rubble.

The one ladder in the shelter would have led back up to the trapdoor but there's currently a poorly made wooden set of stairs right there that makes it a tight fit to get into that segment's bunk beds. The rubble from the other side is probably from where the pepperpot entrance building collapsed under the blow of the bomb blast, but that doesn't explain the hole. To the left and right of the middle segment, obscured in the gloom, stand separate male and female day rooms, fitted with more bench seats and chemical toilets at the very end. The sleeping areas with their triple-tiered bunks hold handbags and emergency bags (likely containing ration cards, I.D. cards and spare clothing), and each bunk bed has its individual lamp holder, hooks and hand -painted numerals. For some reason, none of these lamps are on although they should have been turned on by the occupants. Perhaps there's a way to check if they were recently used? There's a flask of whiskey, freshly spilled, lying sidelong on one of the benches, having spilled its alcohol onto the floor next to a couple drops of fresh blood - still bright red.

The light pierces the darkness of the hole and reveals that its only a six foot drop into some sort of maintenance tunnels. Pipes run along both sides of the concrete tunnel and there's some spatters of blood on the floor, though not a great deal. Perhaps those who have keen

John goes into 'electrician mode' and doesn't see or hear anything as he is concentrating. He feels the lamps to see if they are hot from recent use and then he tries switching them on. If they work, he positions them to light up all the areas and then switches his own torch off to conserve the battery.
ooc,Are the lamps mains, battery or paraffin powered? And can they be moved/carried? Oh, and how many are there if so?

The lamps are warm to the touch from recent use although they weren't used for a terribly long time as they don't burn one's fingers against the glass. They all seem to be working and have plenty of fuel. They're paraffin powered -- which seems a little dangerous. Luckily none of them were knocked loose. Someone must have switched them all off recently. They hang from a bolted loop against the cement though they could be easily removed with the right tool. Its a wonder the blackout gangs haven't made off with them yet.

The numerals are simply a numbering system for the beds and don't seem particularly important although the edge of one seems to have a tiny piece of loose skin and hair attached to it. The flask still contains a little whiskey.

The handbags contain the usual sort of personal oddments. Receipts, ration books, I.D. cards, the odd driver's license, notepads, shopping lists, lipstick, coin purses, tissues, handkerchiefs, keys, sanitary towels, and even a whistle.

William notices the edge of a hand from within the shattered brick building that must have fallen in on someone standing there. He's well covered but there's not a huge degree of rubble so he might be alive if correctly dug out. Might be.

Those who were successful listeners can hear a shuffling sound coming from deep within the tunnel. It sounds like feet. For a moment it sounds like someone quietly calling out: "Help, we're trapped by debris" but the voice is muffled and distant.

Doug cleans one of the handbags on the bunk, leaving it empty so he will be able to use it. He place his stuff in there with the flask of whiskey and the whistle he found.

John frowns as the young man empties the bag. "Steady lad, that's not your property." When William shouts he leaves the lanterns and goes to help. The rubble comes off easily, being largely broken bricks and dust, to reveal a young man in his early twenties who probably should be at War and who wasn't in uniform. He might well be a returned soldier but there's no sign of it. Instead he wore a trench coat (quite new, in fact), a brown vest over a white shirt and brown trousers. His face and hair are covered in brick dust and white plaster, most of it sticking to a patch of congealed blood at the back of his head. Without the dust he'd probably be quite a handsome man.

The young man is breathing, though its labored, and there's a light pulse. He doesn't seem to have any other injuries. Perhaps some smelling salts from the first aid kit might wake him up? His pockets contain a packet of Lucky Strikes and a lighter engraved with the initials A.H. He has an expensive silver wristwatch on his wrist and no wedding band - there's a bit of a pale spot where one used to have been. He has an American passport and I.D. identifying him as Aaron Hewitt, from somewhere in Tenessee. The most unusual matter is the loaded pistol in his trenchcoat pocket and a metal tube in another pocket. There's no holster for the gun, which is unusual in and of itself. He also has a ballpoint pen, a notepad, and a pack of chewing gum in one of his other pockets.

The 'All Clear' sirens haven't gone off yet. Outside there's the Ack-Ack of the guns and the 'whumps' of distant falling bombs. It won't be safe out there.

I bet we can detach that ladder with the proper tools and place it down the hole so we can get in and out. The stairs will suffice when it's time to leave the shelter." She uncorks it and waves it beneath the young man's nose, causing him to frown briefly and then come to with a rapid start, almost knocking the bottle clean from her hands. He's a reasonably fit young man, after all. He half sits, one elbow propping himself up, the other hand going straight for a hat that is pinned under a bunch more bricks.

"Hey lady, looks like I get an angel Nightingale all my own," he said with characteristic American flirtatiousness. He has that kind of American accent heard in all of the Hollywood movies. Were movie stars generally from Tenessee? His gaze flicks around and his smile starts to turn into a frown. "Looks like I've drawn a crowd...." His gaze finally lands on the pistol. "Forgive me but its a touch awkward to wake up facing your own gun," said Aaron Hewitt. Its a Colt M1911 and the metal tube is a silencer designed to muffle the sound of the gun shots. Its the sort of thing one might expect to see in the hands of a hitman - like from the movie This Gun For Hire. "As for how I'm feeling ... I feel like the roof just gave in and fell on me. Bit of trouble, that. Ears are still ringing. Head's a bit dazed. Don't know how you Brits can stand it!"

"If you can't manage the ladder, I'll be over to help in a bit," she says to the fellows before turning back to Aaron Hewitt and smiling at him as well. "He was just looking for identification, Mr. Hewitt," she says, "when he happened to find your weapon. It's unusual to find an American here - being from one of the Southern States, I'm sure you don't want to be called a Yank - especially one who's armed. We could use a few million like you, but I suppose one is a start. So, what brings you to London?" "Wanted to do what I can against the Gerries," said the American, scratching at the back of his head in an obvious tell that he's a little ashamed of the real answer - or perhaps his inability to actually answer. Irene raises an eyebrow. "That's quite admirable of you, Mr. Hewitt," she says. "We have had some volunteers already, and they've been a great help. But you're the first I know of who carries a suppressor. That's an extraordinary piece of kit. What's it in aid of?" Suppressors, or silencers as they were often called by people who didn't know their right name, were quite rare. She would never have recognized one or known what to call it had her brother Oliver not joined the No. 2 Commando last year and been issued one. He might very well have need of one wherever he had been sent, which he hadn't told her and she had known better than to ask. But what did this American plan to do with one in London?

They liked to think that they were inconspicuous, but just look at that nice haircut this one's got. And who in Britain with their mind intact has the time for a tan like that?"

He turns away from the ladder and back towards Aaron, "Not that I'm complaining, mate. If you're ONI you're welcome in these times of trouble. If you're not, who are you here to kill?"

Florence is alarmed at the way the discussion is going, even though she is unsure what a suppressor is exactly. John also counts the satchels and handbags left lying about; it may give an indication on how many people they are looking for. He still can't work out why they would leave the relative safety of the shelter for the service tunnel, especially as a number were obviously women. He's not particularly impressed with the American.

There seems to have been at least seven people here, presuming each item belonged to a different person except for those bags containing kit and spare clothes which could be matched to the handbags or what-not.

The American rubs his head. "Its something worse than that, I can assure you." He slowly struggles to his feet, clearly bruised and battered, with stiff joints, and groans slightly. "Wouldn't go down there if I were you. Haven't you heard of the blackout gangs burrowing up beneath the air raid shelters and murdering folk? Suppose you haven't. Doubt your MInistry of Information would like to advertise the fact."

Irene nods. "Pull the other one, it's got bells on," she says to Aaron. "There may be gangs that roam the blackout, but burrowing under shelters and killing people? How would they even do that? It would take heavy machinery to break through the floor, and how would they get up through that hole without a ladder or something? Look, I heard people down there calling for help, saying they were trapped in the rubble. I've got to try to help them, and I hope you'd do the same. We'll do what we can for your injuries first, of course. If you know what's really going on down there, I suggest you level with us. Just what do you know, and how do you know it?"

"I agree," says Florence. "Share with us what you know. We have to help the people we heard down there, and we have to do so soon. Meanwhile I'll see if I can do anything for your injuries." She expertly tends the American's wounds and he recovers 1 hit point. "I'm sorry that's all I can do for you here," she says, "but you should feel more comfortable now. Now please help us!"

Doug replies to the American, punching his tight right fist into his open left palm.
I can deal with gang members, not with falling bomb.
Doug place his hand in his pocket, feeling his switchblade, if the American is right, he will need it.
Light up my way down John.
He says and begin to climb down.

"You're ... serious, aren't you?" asks Hewitt, stepping out in front of the ladder with a hand out to prevent the bigger man from heading down. "Think about it a minute. I mean, I woulda noticed if there were any nurses here before so I'm supposing you just got here. This hole appears and the twenty six individuals who shared this shelter with me are ... gone. And you're just going to go down there?" He grins. "Say, you lot are as crazy as Australians. I like it. You might want to arm up. No idea what we'll find down there." He turns back with his hand out. "Can I have my gun back now?"

What do you mean gone?
Doug replies
This place is not that safe, just look back to where you lied a moment ago, a pile of rubble.
Surely this tunnel can lead us maybe to a safer shelter. This one crumbles under the pressure and the floor gives way.

Doug points to the trap door they entered through.
We cannot go out either, the Nazis drop bombs out there.
Doug takes out his pocket knife, showing it to the American

With that he circles the American and climbs down the ladder.

John passes Doug a lamp as he starts down the ladder, "Careful as you go son." He clips another lamp to the top of the ladder to light it up for the return journey. He gets his tool bag while waiting surreptitiously for the nurses and William to finish with the American.

William removes his pistol from the inside of his coat. He then turns to the American and offers him the Colt. "Just be aware that you're not the only one here with some lead in this situation." He watches Aaron closely. If the man shows any hint of violence, William intends to put him down as quickly as he can.

"Twenty-six people?" says Irene. "Yes, we'd better go help them quickly and get them out of there. You've got a very perceptive eye, Mr. Hewitt, to have counted all of the people in the shelter before anything even happened. Arming ourselves is a good notion. I don't have any weapons, but some of those tools look like they'd do. I'm rather strong, and I can also fight unarmed if I must. I took a defense course last year when it looked like the Gerries were going to invade." She waits her turn to descend the ladder, holding it steady for the others.

As if to put the truth to their words, a bomb sounds closely and makes the whole world shake under their feet. More rubble slides down the hole and the ladder skids a bit under the weight but its steady enough under their firm guidance.

The American sighs, but seems more content with their enthusiasm than anything, before taking his gun back and holding it loosely in one hand. "Your first aid kit may be the most important object," he said. "Not that I'd turn my back on any female assistance. The more weapons the merrier." His smile turns nostalgic as though he's thinking of a very particular lady before he heads down the ladder as well.

The tunnel stretches out in both directions into darkness. Pipes line the wall on one side. It looks like its some sort of water maintenance tunnel although judging by the rubber protected wiring wrapped together and bundled across the walls as well, it may also hold electricity as well. Hopefully not. That could become a lethal mix if it springs a leak.

The distressed woman seeking her father has sat on one of the bunks whimpering into her handkerchief for much of this but now that the shelter is deserted, she hurries towards the ladder and rushes down. "My father, he must've come down this way," she says as she reaches the bottom. "But how did he get down here?"

Those with keen eyes can see a few trails of blood here and there and a spatter about knee height against one of the walls that seems to have been smeared sidelong. Its still wet and glistening.

Everyone can hear a pair of young women crying in the distance but those with keen ears can hear a low male snickering as well.

"C-can you hear my father?" asked the woman, following slowly behind her.

Hewitt flashes her a smile. "We'll see about your father, Miss...?"

She returns his smile somewhat sheepishly. "Halloway. Julia Halloway."

"Well, I've got to go up towards the front but you stay back here and I'm sure you'll be fine," said Hewitt cheerfully. "If you hear anything terrible, run."

"Wh-why would you say that?" she muttered, but he was already moving toward the center of the group with his gun out.

They reach a T-Intersection. Those with keen ears can hear that the whimpering seems to be coming from the right although there is a slight echo of it to the left. The flashlights bounce off the walls, weakened due to the lid placed over it in the event of an air raid, but bright enough in the darkness to give a dim illumination to the sloping walls.

Lucky we had a scout that-," he cuts short his reminiscence, realizing that now is not the time.

He turns to John. "What do you think, John, left or right?"

Irene looks at the ground for traces of recent passage down either tunnel, but finds none. "I can't find any tracks," she whispers, "but maybe the rest of you will have better luck. My guess is to the right too. Maybe both tunnels get there eventually, but that one's quicker. This place might be easy to get lost in. We should mark our trail so we can find our way back, maybe a notch on the wall pointing the way we came." She smiles at Julia. "Hello, I'm Irene Carpenter. Stick close to me, I'll look after you."

William can see some scratch marks on the concrete floor thats unleashed some of the concrete that has settled down here over the months of bombing. Its only a fine bit of dust here and there, but its easier to see the scratched concrete is a little bit cleaner than the surrounding. The thing is, someone would have to be really terrified to manage to scratch concrete. Either that or the scratches are due to some sort of metal tool being dragged here and there.

There's also no blood -- which is the strange thing. How does a person kidnap over a dozen people without any real injury? Obviously they weren't all knocked out and dragged.

The gloom seems to gain strength from the presence of the torch and in the near distance there seems to be a blot, an inky substance thicker and darker than the surrounding shadows. Perhaps its just the shadow flung from some object in their way but when John sways his lamp, just to make sure, their own shadows sway and change their shape but that inky blot remains the same.

Those with keen ears notice the sound of a woman snickering quietly in the background and can tell its coming from the left where everyone can hear a few clear moans followed by a whimper. Those whose eyes are sharp notice plenty more of those scratched grooves here and there alongside a badly dented pick axe but as no one has a tracker's eyes no one can be sure if the pick axe made the markings on the floor. It stands to reason that it did, however.

The tunnel is bare for around thirty feet but there's a hole in the wall that seems to have been broken through behind the pipes that leads into an older brick tunnel system. There's the faint smell of dry manure that wafts in down that tunnel. The voices are definitely coming from somewhere beyond that hole in the wall.

Upon reaching the hole in the wall, William hands Florence cane with an apologetic look, then awkwardly hefts himself through into the older tunnel. He recovers his cane from her through the aperture. "Thanks Miss. Sorry to be a bother." He waits for the rest of the group, gun held forward and squinting against the darkness.

The lamp and torchlight shows that this is a larger tunnel that sits a good three feet below the one you are currently in and yet is almost as high so it's a bit of a drop that requires either cautious lowering of the body or a bit of athletics (Jump). William finds himself standing on a ledge beside a deeper recess that is still cast in pitch black shadow while none of the lights play across it. The gun certainly feels welcome in his hands in these uncertain surroundings.

Hewitt drops down beside him with what appears to be grace, before his left foot slides out from under him and he slips forward off the ledge and into the ditch, head cracking against the brickwork as he goes. "Oh shit!" he snaps.

"I'm fine," growls Hewitt, standing up and revealing the ditch is around three feet deep. "Except for my ego...." he mutters. He's covered in a brown powdery substance over the white plaster from the broken shelter and his forehead has a rather superficial gash against it.

Doug waits for everyone to go down while he scans the tunnel they came from. He goes several feet and shines the light further away in the tunnel (not the hole) and goes back to the opening, waiting for the others to go down. He holds his knife tightly, trying to pierce the darkness to see if someone will come from the back.

William holsters his gun and drops his cane onto the lower ground, away from Hewitt. He then slowly lowers his bottom half over the edge of the ledge. Using much upper body strength, he eases himself over, hangs briefly, then drops onto his good leg. He stumbles slightly upon landing, but rights himself immediately. Upon recovering his cane from the ground, he unholsters his pistol and holds it ready. The pressing darkness is unnerving and he finds himself holding his breath as he waits for more light to arrive.

The tunnel they've left is still empty and clear of any signs of a pursuer. The tunnel they've entered seems to head off in two directions. The ditch is an old sewerage tunnel where the excrement has long since dried and turned to soil. There's an indentation where Hewitt fell into it and also signs of a number of different footprints here and there.

He looks at the height difference of the two tunnels and then calls down to the party, "Are we going to be able to climb back out again- even with injured people? And what about the other people up the first tunnel, do you think they'll be alright for a bit or should I go check on them?"

"I think this is the direction those voices were calling to us from," said Hewitt. "Hard to be sure under all this damn rock though." He seems to enjoy swearing when he's nervous.

The footprints seem almost human but they have a rather severe arch and it seems the size of their feet would match those of a small lady's foot which makes that arch seem all the more severe in comparison. It'd have to be at least five inches high.

"Huh," said Hewitt. "Never thought of high heels."

"Maybe someone got away?" asked Julia. "But why didn't they walk along the ledges?" She shrieks suddenly and wraps her arms around Doug, one trembling finger pointing into the darkness. As Irene's torch darts in that direction (I'm assuming) they can see a rat staring back at them. It pops up onto its hind legs and sniffs the air as it considering them wryly. Julia doesn't seem all that calmer now she can see what it is. "A-a rat!"

The dip is about three and a half feet high and wouldn't be a problem if it were well-lit and if the sewer ledge wasn't so crumbling. So long as they can lift an injured person that high they can always slide them into safety.

Irene hesitates; she doesn't really want to go in front. "I have a torch, not a lamp," she says. "Perhaps I ought to go third. That way I can shine my light over William's shoulder at something in particular. Julia and Florence, you should go behind me in the middle, where you'll be safer."

William, seeing everyone's trepidation at leading the group, speaks up, "I'll go first, then." He looks at Irene meaningfully, "Just keep that torch steady, in case I need to aim at someone." "Here mate, let me go first. I'm big enough to slow them down and then you'll have time to dodge or aim that gun." John squeezes past William and shines his lamp ahead. 'A brave man' he thinks 'but he has more to lose than me.' John walks slowly down the tunnel.

William hesitates at John's insistence, his masculinity briefly threatened. He starts to object, then his prosthetic catches the ground wrong and he stumbles slightly. To avoid falling, he stumbles against John's broad back, then rights himself. "Sorry, mate," he stammers, blushing furiously. He shakes his head, grinning ruefully. The big man's right, he thinks as he lurches forward, following John, He will make a better blockade than I. I just wish that didn't make me feel so damned useless.

John allows William to steady himself; his face creases into a rare grin, "Quit jumping around you're making me nervous! And be ready with that weapon, I'll be counting on you." John starts up the tunnel, his shadow looming monstrously across the curved ceiling. "I can build the damn things but can't shoot 'em. Where's the sense in that?"

Re: Norbury At Night

A faint vibration scuttles across the brickwork, unloosing a little bit of brick dust on the already dusty group. That must have been a pretty direct hit above them. Its a good thing they're down here where its safe. Maybe.

"I'll go last," said Hewitt, looking at Doug. "I've got the gun and there's no use me trying to defend people by shooting forward as there'll be people in the way. My only use will be at the back. I'd appreciate it if you'd swing that lamp back this way if we get any trouble, though."

Presuming there's no trouble with that plan, he'll take his position at the rear and the group will slowly go forward. If people do complain, he'll shrug and go second-to-last and the column will continue as before.

"I don't understand," whispered Julia, reaching out to grasp Florence's arm. "My father had enough trouble going down the stairs and there were a fair few elderly people living in those apartments. That's why the Home Guard installed those stairs even though ARP was against it and kept pulling it down for a bit. The Home Guard didn't want to have to winch survivors out of the rubble. I've no idea how they all managed to hop down here or why they'd keep going. This ... it just doesn't feel right."

The sewer continues on a decent length before dipping down a gentle slope and at the bottom of that slope there's a number of mounds half-buried amongst the dry and powdery ancient sewerage. It does look like they were buried. There's little ditches around them from where the soil had been scooped up.
Show,John is several steps ahead of him, followed by William and then Irene. Then there's Florence, Julia, Doug and Hewitt - if Hewitt is allowed to go last.

The extra light reveals that someone certainly did heap soil up over them. Its certainly not accidental or natural. They're so well covered, however, that even direct light can't reveal what it is. The lumps are relatively small, however, as far as lumps go and are generally only a few inches with, sometimes a foot or so long.

Re: Norbury At Night

William isn't very thrilled to be in the sewers, much less puzzling over sewer deposition, but he gamely hazards, "Perhaps they're the spoils from whoever the thieves stole from." He leans forward and pokes one of the mounds deeply with his cane, listening carefully for any sounds that may suggest metal or jewelry. "Although why they would dirty their ill-gotten gains with night soil is beyond me." Still prodding, he looks over his shoulder at Doug, "Mind giving us a hand with this, lad? I can't bend down well and John's holding the light."

It sounds almost like stone but not quite as strong. Crouching on the edge of the ledge, a foot can certainly stretch out to brush some of the soil loose revealing something stained a bit brown that's somewhat rounded. Stones, maybe? Poking with the cane produces a better effect and lifts an edge out. Perhaps if someone who could crouch could use the cane they could quickly find an answer.

A decent understanding of anatomy would be required to estimate the way the bones died and it would be a hard one at that considering the animals would have chewed at it and the bones may have degraded over time. Still, if more of the skeleton were revealed it might give a few clues for those who are Medicine-minded.

Irene had already been expecting to find a body, so she isn't terribly shocked by the discovery. She has no idea what caused this person's death. She's an ambulance driver, not a real nurse. She knows how to treat injuries, but deducing what caused them is something beyond her training. There's a few clumps here and there further down the trench but it looks like there's just enough here for a body. Doug pokes into what's likely the ribs and shifts it revealing that, yes, it is an intact ribcage. A lot of the soil seems stuck to this one and its heavier than the others but with a bit of pushing and pressing he manages to partially lift it and twist it to its side - revealing brown-stained meat and sinew entangling the ribs and a patch of tattooed skin on its back that has peeled up at the edges.

"Well, if he's got no clothes, there's little point in searching him," says Irene. She waits for the others to roll the corpse over and then uses the torch to illuminate the tattoo so that Julia can draw it.

"Here mate, hold this a minute. Better get it over and done with." He passes William his lamp and rummages in his tool bag. He pulls out a large spanner and a hammer and then uses them to carefully lever the corpse over to reveal the tattoo. He tries not to breath in too much or take in too much detail. "Grim. Give me cables anyday." He mutters.

William accepts the lamp from John, glad to be contributing something to the endeavor. The belt of whiskey has begun to course through his blood and makes him feel steadier. Fancy that, he thinks, Keeling over on my backside at the sight of a little death. I must be getting soft. He holds the lamp as high as he can without losing his balance, trying to shine as much light on the gory scene as possible.

John carefully steps down out of the way so Doug can reach the other mounds and gingerly steps over the corpse so his shadow is not obscuring the tattoo. "There you go, Miss, hurry up with your sketching; I'd rather not stay here too long if you please."

Julia winces but pulls her notepad out of her handbag and does her best at sketching the tattoo. As her pencil draws out the last few lines of the tattoo, there's a distant rumbling sound followed by the closer sound of bricks or stone or something similar collapsing and tumbling across one of the sewer lines further in.

Sharp ears caught the note of something thumping into the bricks, spilling them loose from their moorings. Definitely intentional and not due to some distant crumb of bombs vibrating unseen through the brick tunnels. Its probably about a few minutes walk further along and left from where they are all currently standing.

As soon as Julia stops drawing John releases the corpse with relief. He bangs any dessicated remains off the tools onto the wall and replaces the tools in his bag. "Okay, but lets proceed slowly. William are you okay with that lamp?" He pulls out his own torch, switches it on and plays it on the ceiling as they start off. He's looking for any cracks or weaknesses that may have occurred in the suspected collapse. What idiot is pulling the walls apart down here? Could bring the whole lot down.

A sudden vibration shivers through the brickwork as a large HE bomb must have hit close by. It enters some of the more experienced individuals that some of those bombs the Germans drop leave craters so large that you could drive two double-decker buses inside. How deep belowground are they, exactly? This old brickwork could certainly collapse and sandwhich them between the brick above and below. As they head along the tunnel, treading carefully along the one-and-a-half-foot-wide brick sides, they start to make out the odd intake pipe that hovers over small gaps in the passageway. A few of those pipes are clotted with soil though some of them are empty. Sometimes larger pipes protrude in the wall, made from cement, that have a slight slope upwards. After some distance, they reach a T-Intersection. The sound of falling bricks had come from the left.

To John's question, William replies, "I can keep holding this lamp for as long as you need it, mate." The ominous cracking and rumbling makes him wince. "But, once we start moving, I'll need my cane back," he nods to Doug, "And I'd rather be carrying my little cannon in my good hand than the lamp. I suggest we begin moving soon, by the way." He narrows his eyes and squints meaningfully at the webwork of cracks that have spread across the ceiling and wall.

The mechanically minded can tell that there are risks in the brick sewer. Some of those massive bombs can tear craters in roads large enough to drive a couple buses down and if one should struck then this entire corridor should collapse. They could make their way through the ditch so that, should the ceiling come down on them, it might land flat above them and allow them to keep crawling on their way. Of course, its brick so it might also simply shatter and dump tons of earth over their heads. Still, it'd be safer in the ditch than on the edges. They should be safer here than on the streets. Londoners have been championing for Deep Shelters after all and this one has been around for at least a century, perhaps more.

Of course, that doesn't mean that this sewer might not connect to more modern intercepting sewers even if the sewage hasn't been routed through this tunnel in awhile. Even if this tunnel is only being used as a vent, there are risks involved, particularly for those carrying lanterns. If there is a scent of almonds about the place, they should flee. They shouldn't rely on a flickering flame where possible in case they come across flammable gas. There is the risk that they will come across a bubble of gas that will sicken them or lay them low even, or perhaps especially, if this tunnel has been sealed and unused for decades.

"Yeah, the bombing might collapse the tunnel," says Irene. "We're in deep, so it's not too likely barring a direct hit, but we'd be safer if we go in the ditch. If the ceiling does drop, we can still crawl through, but if it just breaks apart then we're for it. Oh, and torches only. Douse those lanterns. There may be pockets of flammable gas down here. There may be toxic gas too. I hope everyone remembered to carry their gas masks." She takes out her own and puts it on, making sure it's secure.

"If we don't find another exit, we can always leave the way we came as long as nothing collapses behind us," says Irene, climbing into the ditch next. The gas mask distorts her voice. She marks the side of the ditch with an arrow pointing out to help them retrace their steps later.

The ditch is disturbing considering its contents but the sewage has been rendered down to soil so its easy to try and pretend otherwise. The gas masks certainly obscure vision and it won't take long for them to get warm. They're already stuffy. Still its better than being gassed. Unfortunately, they've heard enough stories about the Blitz to know that gas masks don't protect against household gases and it certainly won't protect against an absence of oxygen. Still, its better than nothing and in a sewer a broken gas main may be the least likely of their worries.

"First time my gas mask would've been useful and I left it under rubble," muttered Hewitt.

John checks he has his mask but does not put it on yet. He'll keep his nose out in the 'fresh' air ready for strange smells. He grips his electric torch and holds it out in front to light the way. Once the others are in the ditch and ready to continue he starts to wade through the dry soil making his way down the tunnel.

The tunnel rounds left and then right and then right again before a blood slick sewage pipe filled with clots of dried and crumbly 'soil' that leads up at least a dozen feet before kinking straight once more. Amongst the crimson smeared soil crawls an inch-long yellow scorpion that crawls across the debris. Further down the passageway is a section of collapsed bricks. It looks like they were knocked into the sewer from the other side. The other side being a concrete tunnel that stretches one way and the other, the bleak ceiling curving overhead.

Irene nods to Florence. "Yes, let's check it out," she says, shining her torch through the opening. "Still think they just wondered off?" mutters Hewitt.

The corridor beyond the broken brick work looks like some old transport tunnel. There's a single set of rusted iron tracks that run down the center of the tunnel in either direction. There's a slight whistling of the wind down here which suggests that wind is coming in from somewhere. Further on in the darkness are a few flickering reddish glows on the ceiling though they don't appear to be lights. Not precisely. More like moving glows here and there. Faint, yet real. It almost hurts your eyes to strain to try to see them.

John looks at the scorpion, he's heard of scorpions in Kent before but never actually seen one for himself. "Probably came in on a shipment to the docks, I wonder how it got down here." He ducks his head and climbs through to the new tunnel, being tall, he is a bit closer to the red glows than the others and he looks at them with interest, shining his torch on the areas of ceiling where the glows seem to hover. He also sniffs the air to check it's okay.

John keeps up with the others but he is more interested in where the breeze is coming from. He wonders if the red glows are patches of gas, they are like nothing he has seen before but then he has never been this deep under London. While the girls look at the writing he tries to see if the glows are blown by the breeze or if they are stationary.

The glows don't appear to be move from their square-like positions in the ceiling. Perhaps when they get a bit closer to them they would have a better perspective on it.

The chalk writing simply states:

God is our refuge, be not afraid.
He will take care of you through the raid.
When bombs are dropping and danger is near
He will be with you, until the All Clear.

Its a Christian prayer often found in and around air raid shelters however this is obviously no air raid shelter.

William limps ahead, gamely. The prayer was both comforting and disturbing to him at once. The red lights on the ceiling add to his anxiety. Are they moving? Maybe rats? He tightens his grip on the gun and wishes he had more whiskey than the small amount left in his flask.

Irene also sticks close to Florence, training her torch on the red glows to get a better look.

Re: Norbury At Night

The red glows are most assuredly fire light that has entered the tunnel through grilles in the road. Fire seen from below. Its strange because so little heat seems to escape the flames to enter these tunnels nor is there any smoke down here. There's at least five in this one tunnel down that direction, each one spaced roughly 100 feet apart, and three down the other direction.

"Norbury's burning," whispers Julia, slowing to a halt and gazing up with pale eyes.

Hewitt squeezes her shoulder and she turns into him, burying her face in his shoulder. Its a strange moment of intimacy that the Yank seems perfectly comfortable with but which would make most Brits a bit more awkward.

Julia pulls away from him, tears shining on her cheeks in the firelight. "I've dealt with the Blitz but this ... father's missing and I just don't ... I don't know." She sniffles. "Is he down here? Why haven't we seen him? Why haven't we seen any of them?" Her gaze lands on each person in the group as though seeking the answers from each in turn.

There's a scuffle and a groan that sounds somewhere in the darkness further along. It sounds like something moving against the concrete. Training one's flashlight in that direction reveals a few slight smears of blood here and there. Light, easily ignored if not for the hyper-focus that dawns on those who hear those noises. The flashlights roam across the concrete, lifting up, and at the edge of the beam weakened by air raid precautions (the light muffling cover) can be seen a pair of black shoes and trousers beyond. Some human figure, still dressed, moves and groans at the edge of the light beam, most of the man's body still obscured by gloom.

William nods to John, "At least someone's alive in these bloody crypts. I'm still going to keep an eye open, though. I have a bad feeling about all of this." Irene crouches low and moves the beam of her torch back and forth over the ground where they're looking. She wears a WVS ambulance driver's uniform, a bit worse for the wear but not in bad shape. Pencil lines are drawn on the backs of her legs to imitate the seams of the nylon stockings she isn't wearing, as they were long since turned into parachutes. Though her face is concealed behind her gas mask, her dark hair is pretty. "My name's Irene Carpenter," she says. "I can help too. What is it you've lost? Are you injured?"

"Ah, here they are Rupert, you clumsy fool. And unbroken, thank The Lord!" He turns his body as his trembling hands place spectacles on his face, revealing a chubby kindly-faced man in his 50s. Also noticeable is his clerical dog collar. "Came off when I slipped you see. The Reverend Rupert Trevelyan, pleased to meet you" he says, casting his eyes over the newcomers.

He addresses the nurses "Just a few cuts and bruises i believe Miss Carpenter, but I shall leave it to you experts ", and remains laying down. At Julia's question "Who was your father, child? There were many of us in the shelter. Have you found anyone? I was just passing by on my bicycle, heading home to Streatham, when the sirens went off." His politeness doesn't quite hide the tremble in his voice, as he attempts to comprehend what he's just been through.

John does as William asks and keeps the light high above everyone's heads so that they can all see. With his arm up, the torch is nearly seven foot above the ground. He himself remains mostly in the shadows, a huge dark and morose hulk. At first he thinks the figure is just a tramp, lost in the tunnels. Then he is glad to find a missing shelter person. "But why is he on his own? Where are the rest? Surely he would have stayed with them. I think you are right William, something's amiss." He whispers to William and Doug.

"The rest of us came along later, Reverend," says Irene. "The shelter had taken a hit and was buried under the rubble, but we dug the entrance out. The only person we found in the shelter was Mr. Hewitt here, and he had been knocked unconscious and trapped under rubble. There was a gaping big hole in the shelter floor, and we went down looking for everyone else, trying to follow tracks and sounds. Dust everywhere, and screaming. I was struck on the head and fell to the floor. I was in and out of consciousness......the...the strangest thing." Rupert frowns, as he begins to recall the events. "Next thing I was being dragged across the floor by my legs. Felt like..like...thick wires. So cold. So dark....Screams......" He trails off.
He removes his glasses and rubs his eyes, then continues "But the strangest thing. The wires, they...shifted, almost alive. No...silly. Must have been the bump to the head. Well I screamed for help as loud as I could. Then an odd screeching in response and the wires released. A scampering sound, as if the person controlling the wires was fleeing. Well, I must have passed out after that. Next thing I'm coming to, and here you all are. But... but the others...where?" Rupert sighs.
As he looks around, there is sudden shock on his face "My word, that's not ...b-blood on the walls?"

John looks at the blood carefully to see if there is a trail of it further along the tunnel. Rupert's story reminds him of the scrapes in the floor that they saw earlier. "That would tie in to those marks that looked like something had been dragged across the concrete. And wires? Possibly ropes. I have a feeling someone may have dragged the people down here. Ruthless thugs maybe, kidnappers, Jerries?" He voice is low and only carries to Doug and William as he doesn't want to alarm the women.

"Well, we've found you, Reverend, and we'll find the others," says Irene. "There's nothing for it but to keep going the way you were being dragged. The others must be further along. Did you write that prayer on the wall? If you've got chalk on you, we can use it to mark our route so we can find our way out of here. It's a lot better for the job than my lipstick that I've been using thus far - not to mention a lot easier to come by."

"I can provide you a replacement stick, if you like," says Hewitt in that rather airy yet sly American way that most are used to seeing on the silver screen. There's the edge of a flirt there but, at the same time, an acceptance that she might refuse or even accept without meaning anything by the acceptance.

"Thank you, Mr. Hewitt," says Irene with a smile, though it's impossible to see behind the gas mask. "I'd forgotten how available life's little luxuries were in America. Though Julia doesn't have any lipstick at all, so if you have only one stick you should give it to her. I still have part of mine left." She still hasn't made up her mind yet about Hewitt, though she's open to the thought. In any case, he had shown interest in Julia earlier, and this gives him the perfect opening. Irene knows she has no shortage of potential suitors if the two of them hit it off.

Hewitt gives Julia a sidelong glance. "Well, I got a few things from America. Maybe when we get out of here I'll be feeling generous. Chocolate and tea all round."

Julia doesn't seem to notice their conversation. She simply gazes up at the flaming patches of light coming in through the grilles set into the three feet deep gaps. "That's if any of us have anything left standing," she murmurs quietly. She hurres over to the reverand. "Are you able to keep walking?"

There is a good chance some of the gangs transferred their activity to the sewers now that it is not safe outside.

Tying people with ropes and dragging them all over sounds a bit odd. why not steal their belonging and disappear in the tunnels ... but these are hard times so who knows why they did it.

They continue on down the wide tunnel, occasionally bathed in the edges of that red fiery light, listening to the wind howl up through the narrow grilles to feed the conflagration above. Eerily enough, it is cold down here, even close to the flame, and only when the wind seems to reverse and rush down the grille and through the tunnel does any smoke and heat follow it. They're probably vents set into the side of the street that the citizens, accustomed as they are to looking up, haven't particularly noticed. As they continue, they note that one of the grilles above them has been broken, the metal twisted upwards as though something has punched through the steel. A short distance away, there's a thick crack in the wall, wide enough for a man to squeeze through. The tunnel continues on ahead.

As they approach the thick crack, there's a terrifying shriek that echoes down the tunnel, seeming to come from all around them. There's something about that noise, that unearthly noise, that leaves them with the impression that there's something inhuman down there with them. Its a foolish impression. An impossible impression. Yet the creeping sensation across their skin suggests that it is the only valid impression to consider.

There seems to be some sort of white bone, like a couple of femurs, stretched across the gap a few feet back but no matter which angle she stands she can't see the edges of those femurs. Beyond that is a brick room, about twenty feet deep. The floor has a few holes taken out of it, dropping who knows how deep?

The scream unnerves William, reminding him of all the voices from battlefields past wailing as one. He shivers in fear and automatically takes a belt from the flask, emptying it in one last gulp. He approaches the gap with his gun held as a shield before him and tries to cover Irene.

The shriek jolts Rupert, but he finds solace as he clutches his Crucifix and utters a short prayer under his breath. He steels himself and also approaches the crack with his companions, unsure whether a human or some distressed animal uttered such a sound.

It is something his drunken dead father tend to tell him to fright him - monsters tales. He squeeze his knife tightly in his palm, leaving marks in the flesh. "I'll do it," says Hewitt, double checking that his gun was loaded. Complete with the accent and the nice suit, he almost looked like an American gangster stepped free from the silver screen. Not quite as handsome but still attractive enough. "You lot wait out here." He steps forward into the gap in the wall that is almost three feet deep. "There's some kind of office in here."

John shivers at the unearthly howls but is not too alarmed. He blocks the images that begin to rise in his mind and concentrates instead on the job in hand. He watches the men climb through the gap, "Careful there, those holes may have made the floor weak and unstable. Reverend, maybe you should let the American test the loading first."

"The floor's not broken, it's opened," said Hewitt, crouching down to peer into the darkness. "Man, I need a light." He returns to the crack, stepping past the Reverend. "Can one of you give me a light? All I've got is a lighter."

The Reverend can see that the room is about 20 feet by 20 feet with a high plastered ceiling and a set of stairs in the far corner that leads up to the smooth ceiling. Looks like someone covered up this cellar. There's a gap between the stairs and the wall. Perhaps a poorly place stairwell leading down? The long bones are huge. Perhaps a dinosaur's leg bones or something similar? They're about as wide as the room and are braced between the two walls, meaning he'll need to step high over one and duck down under the other simultaneously.

Hewitt takes the flashlight with a wink and a flourish. "No promises." He turns the flashlight around the room, focusing it briefly on the bones as he comes in closer. "Think they're real? Looks sticky." He pulls a handkerchief out of his pocket and presses it against it but when he tries to pull it free it remains stuck. "It is sticky." To those who get close to it, the bone is obviously made from thousands of gossamer threads that glisten slightly like mica in granite when the flashlight is pressed up close to it. To those outside in the crack, it just looks like bone.

"Possibly," says Florence in response to John, "though I've never seen bones change form so dramatically like that. "There's some interesting dents in the brickwork like a mountain climber has gone down the walls through the gaps on occasion," said Hewitt. "I wouldn't want to follow them that way, though. "Only if you want to take point with me," says Hewitt. "I think we can turn the lamps back on, though. I doubt there's going to be any loose gas down here. Whatever this place is, it's well-used. I think we're looking at a kidnapping. What the priest said made me consider it likely but having found this place? Yeah, some kind of mass kidnapping. Oh, careful about those thick 'bones'. I'd suggest that anyone who's not too sure about ducking through a three foot gap that's two feet up without daring to brush either rope should lay down and slide themselves across the floor and underneath it." He steps through the gap.

Julia pauses before stepping in behind Sarah. "How would someone kidnap so many people? And why?"

Hewitt shrugged. "I don't know, but it's looking likelier every second." He heads over to the stairwell, gun in hand, and gestures for them to follow him. "Either come with us or head back. Your choice. I won't think any less of you for returning."

"I'm not turning back until I find my father," said Julia. "Though I don't know what I can do to help...."

"I'm sure you'll think of something," he says encouragingly. Most men these days would be more protective of the women and encourage them to keep themselves safe from this sort of violent danger but there he is encouraging them to come along. You'd think Americans, in particular, wouldn't have learned the lessons even some Brits were struggling with about a woman's capacity to help in dangerous situations.

"Wait!" John whispers urgently to those not yet through the gap. "I'm getting really uneasy about this, especially about our American friend here. Here he is, gaily leading us deeper and deeper off the beaten track as it were and we're all following like sheep. He seems to know his way around pretty well down here. How did they get all those prisoners past that sticky stuff without it rubbing off? What if he's in league with the kidnappers; we're being a pretty haul with no trouble at all." It's a long speech for the morose John Brooks.

"That's a bit of a stretch, isn't it?" says Irene to John. "He tried to talk us out of going down here if I recall correctly. That said, it doesn't make sense for anyone to kidnap dozens of people. It would take at least as many people, probably twice as many, to pull it off. And what would they do with them all? It's quite a length to go to just to get unrationed meat. I don't pretend to know what's going on, but the fact is that all these people are missing and we have a duty to try to locate and help them. Whoever doesn't want to come with can follow my marks back to the shelter, but I'm going forward." Considering how tall she is, Irene decides it would be best to lie down and slide underneath the lower rope.

Show, sorry, mixed the great Aunt with the great Niece....
Considering that she dragged herself along the brick, she comes up without too much dirt on her uniform which suggests that this place has been kept reasonably tidy although the idea of someone sweeping this floor seems more than a bit ludicrous. As she slides underneath it, Hewitt trains the light on the lower rope (for that is what it most closely resembles at this range) which is about three inches thick and she can see the glittering amongst its strands. It looks almost like someone had placed hundreds of thousands of spider web lines against each other like fibres from across the room.

"I'm afraid I did not see what dragged me Miss Carpenter, it was far too dark" Rupert responds. "I suppose it's possible". He inspects the strands closer. "It's like nothing I've ever seen. Perhaps it's one of these military inventions we've been making lately, rather advanced for simple kidnappers, wouldn't you say?" he suggests. Due to his rather portly frame, Rupert also crawls underneath the lower strand. As he comes up, he addresses Hewitt "Mr Hewitt. This is all getting rather bizarre and distressing. Is there something you are not telling us? You seem remarkably calm. Given we are plunging into the unknown, any information you are withholding may be vital for our safety. I'm sure some of these good people here feel as I do. Many I'm sure have families and dependants relying on them, and would need to make an informed decision before deciding to proceed with us."

Hewitt sighs. "To be perfectly honest I don't know what's going on down here. All I know is that a few other underground shelters have been cleared out and the only sign was a hole in the floor. The government's been keeping it pretty hush hush as shelters are meant to be, well, shelter. One of those shelters was beneath a school.... There's been children in every single one of them. I-I went to the Local Government Authority and managed to charm my way into seeing the underground routes and I found there was a pattern to it. It turns out that my pattern was right, or perhaps I was lucky, because we've passed through so many damn tunnels that none of them hook up just so to the main lines I thought were being used." He shrugs. "To be honest, I don't think what we're dealing with is human but if I go much more into my previous experiences you'll just think I'm a crazed tramp. I've learned that the only way for people to understand this sort of stuff involves first-hand experiences."

"Yes thank you for telling us more," agrees Florence. "It sounds hard to believe, but we've all now seen strange and bizarre things, and I'm probably more open to the idea than I would have been if I'd heard it before. Children being involved just makes things so much worse. We have to keep looking, and we all have to be alert to danger. Whoever is doing this is clearly very dangerous."

John nods briefly, shrugging to William. "Fair enough Mr. Hewitt, I'll take you on your word." He climbs through the gap and proceeds to crawl under the threads and bones. He looks carefully at the threads on the way. "Did anyone ever read that book that came out just before the was started? It had dragons and giant spiders in it; they seemed fond of children. "That is something I don't know," said Hewitt. "I doubt, however, that this is from a giant spider. It might be something that exudes a substance that can be molded into these large trip wires. Let's face it. If I hadn't come through and been suspicious about whether they were sticky, someone here would be caught like the tar baby." He smirks. "Perhaps I'm wrong, though. Hewitt leads the way down the stairs, holding his gun in one hand and the flashlight in the other. The steps are narrow and quite steep although they are at least evenly spaced so they could be worse. There are a bit smooth along the middle, smoothed down by the passage of time and many feet, and that causes a bit of an easily tripped over tilt. In the darkness it is quite difficult to find their way down and so it's slow going for those that don't have a flashlight that they can direct down. Hewitt's flashlight sparks off the stone steps, casting shadows dancing gaily as he makes his slow way down, pausing ever so often to lift the light up to check what's in front of them but the stairs lead down to about a few feet of floor space before meeting one of the brick walls. They won't get a good look at the floor below until they round that brick corner.

Irene marks the wall again, with the arrow pointing back up the stairs. "Maybe that stuff is silk," she whispers, "but silk shouldn't be that sticky, even in spider webs. Maybe we should bring back a sample of it when we're done. It might be useful to the war effort."

"It felt pretty solid for silk," said Hewitt, who had lost his handkerchief to it.

Julia follows them tentatively down the stairs. "Did anyone who disappeared ... ever come back?"

Hewitt doesn't answer.

The room is much as the one above but without gaps into the floor below. There is, just as Hewitt described, a large brick archway with a series of sigils thickly engraved into the edges. Each sigil is at least as large as a person's head and look decidedly occult.

Probably the miners and masons who built the upper tunnels built this place to rest and storage things.
He remarks, trying to guess the purpose of their descent, the stairs and the this room.

John shakes his head. He's a practical man through and through; non-human menaces? The man is barmy. He follows the group down the stairs, shining his torch for the torchless where necessary. He looks at the sigils with little interest; he doesn't recognise them for anything.

William limps down the stairs behind Hewitt and enters the strange room. The symbols above the door are strange, but mean nothing to him. His stump is beginning to ache. All the climbing and shifting has begun to take its toll on his leg. He surreptitiously rubs his thigh muscles with the back of his gun hand and hopes no one notices his discomfort.

Rupert also examines the markings, but they are like nothing he has seen before. He fumbles around the pockets of his jacket and produces as small paper bag. "Well, before we proceed through this mysterious archway, would anyone care for a toffee?" he announces, in an attempt to lighten the mood.

John sits his torch down on a high step so it illuminates the area and then takes a toffee with a nod. He sits on the stairs for a rest wondering how long they'd all been traipsing around down here. The toffee just makes him realise how hungry he is.

The rest break is short and peaceful but for the strangely menacing long corridor that stares them down with its inky wells of blackness that might obscure any kind of horror. A quick probe of the flashlight reveals wooden iron-strapped double doors about fifteen feet down the corridor. It looks like something pulled straight from the Middle Ages. To make matters worse, there's a row of sharp metal points protruding from the holes in the ceiling that looks eerily like a metal portcullis. There's at least two of them. One by this entrance and the other a few feet before the double doors.

William eyes the porticulli warily. "If those still work," he muses thoughtfully, "They could trap us within. Perhaps we should chock them fast with something, in case a bomb blast from above drops them suddenly." He begins to search through his pockets for something useful.

It's doubtful whether anyone would have something in their pockets that could chock it closed. Perhaps a handbag, first aid kit, or a gas mask could do the trick. The trouble was that the ceiling was nine feet high and therefore not easily accessible. It certainly is possible, however, for those with a decent implement and the right skill.

Irene puts her gas mask back on after finishing her toffee. "Or there could be an actual trap planted there to drop them once we're between them," she says. "Either way, we need to find something to wedge under them. Maybe there are wooden boards or something in the rubble we could use. If one of us gets up on someone's shoulders, we could reach up there."

"I don't fancy trying to jam pieces of some man's body up there. That level of desecration is beyond even me. Of course, that door may probably be locked. Anyone handy with a pick?"

"Isn't there some other way?" asks Julia nervously. "I don't like either of those options."

William speaks up, "I may have something that would work but," he hesitates. Feeling, uncomfortably, the expectant gazes of everyone upon him, he continues, "I'd hate to lose it. It has personal significance." Upon saying this, he leans against a wall and raises his trouser leg to reveal his prosthetic tightly strapped to his thigh. He reaches down and pushes a small brass stud, popping a small hidden panel out of the side. After a moment's fumbling, he produces a large combat knife, serrated down one edge. A gleaming death's head sits atop the pommel.

"Well, they're already up," said Hewitt. "Presumably if we find the lever we'd just bring them down." He frowns thoughtfully. "And then it wouldn't be a very good defensive measure. The lever is likely inside. Here, let me give you a boost, John."

John gets a boost up from the American and manages to wedge his hammer pretty securely. He can't deal with the mechanisms as they'd all be at the top of the gate - which would be in the room upstairs.

"This is so medieval," murmurs Julia. "Do you think its been here since medieval times?"

John can see that the edges are pretty well-cared for and not rusted at all. It's probably been installed in the past decade at most and has certainly been well-cared for.

"Thank you Mr. Hewitt." John lands back on the floor. He looks puzzled. "If I didn't know any better I'd say those gates are brand new, no more than ten years old tops." He shrugs, "Maybe the air down here has a preserving quality but I'm sure there's fresh oil up there." He's a bit sorry to lose his hammer; good tools are hard to come by these days. "A bit like lipstick and nylons." He thinks aloud.

Irene looks puzzled at John's final statement. "Well, I'm glad we didn't use the bones after all," she says. "I don't know if it's a good idea to use the knife, though. That's likely to be useful down here, especially if it comes to a fight. It might also be able to cut through those sticky strands. I had a tool kit as well, but it's in the ambulance. But there's got to be something else we can use on the other one."

William nods, secretly grateful for Irene's suggestion. "I suppose you're right, Miss. Perhaps there're other items about, back the way we came. Regardless, this first one's wedged up nice and tight so, were the second to fall due to some hidden trigger or watchful agent on t'other side of the door, the pair have lost the ability to trap us." He quickly tucks the dagger back into his prosthetic and smooths his trouser leg.

"We could still be trapped if we're already through the door when it falls," says Irene, "though it's far more likely that they're set to fall when we're between them. "They used to be called penny dreadfuls," says Irene. "Has inflation gotten that bad? Anyhow, everything that's happened so far seems straight out of one. William shrugs, suddenly anxious to be moving. "Well, we won't get anywhere dithering about in front of a possible trap. Let's see what this gets us." He boldly places a cane under the stopped gate, leans forward and hobbles into the questionable area.

The next room contains a set of metal tracks on the floor like one might find in certain factories which branches out into three different spots against the right wall, each of which contains large metal bins upon those tracks, whose sides are five feet high and which buzz ominously with flies. Otherwise the room is bland brick with a five-foot-wide corridor going down about twenty foot toward another room which is blocked by strips of rubber likely designed to partially keep the smell out.

They open the drawers and cupboards and find most of them empty although there is a tray of sharp butcher's knives in one of the cupboards alongside a mailed glove. Four brown leather aprons are hung up inside a cupboard to one side. Everything seems very clean and very sterile although in a few places there are little dents in the metal. There is a plain wooden door and another doorway covered in thin plastic strips within this tiled white room that lead into places that have yet to be seen.

"This isn't normal," says Julia. "It isn't right." She grabs hold of William's sleeve. "Shouldn't we go tell someone? Fetch the police?"

Show, sure thing. Feel free to simply roll your stats when you attempt something rather than asking permission. I can always apply modifiers ad hoc as it just changes the threshold for success rather than affecting the dice rolls themselves - unlike World of Darkness. If you roll 36, you rolled 36. The question only remains whether that is now a success or not.

She pulls the door open to reveal ... a pantry. Spices line the various shelves while cleaning products sit on the floor underneath. The spices aren't in little jars however but in much larger ones. There are veritable sacks of salt, no less. The room itself is only about five feet by six or so feet and it is lit by a solitary bulb (now off) with a pull chain.

The next room appears to be the killing floor with a large recessed basin in the tiled floor with a few large drains still crusted with blood. There's iron tracks overhead from which the occasional hook dangles on a chain. To one side, against the wall, stands a pair of stainless steel sinks. There's another doorway opposing the one you've just come through, also hung with strips, and a door to the right.

The next chamber is a square room that has a barred wall with a little locked gate (about half the height of a man) set in the middle. Twelve women and three men stand about in that room, stock still, staring distantly wherever their faces are pointed. A few of them appear to be fresh amputees judging by the blood stained bandaging about their missing limbs. One seems to have recently lost an eye. They all seem freshly washed, shaven, and are quite naked.

Rather embarrassed at having been out-meched by a nurse, John has a quick look at the figures. "How is it that they are standing up and yet don't seem conscious of their surroundings? We could put those on some of the ladies, and our coats. If you gentlemen would part with your shirts, those would do for the shorter girls. Although having said that they are all in a terribly confused state, so who knows. The important thing is to get them out of here and back to safety as quickly as possible."

It does appear that they may have been drugged. There are markings on the forearm by the elbow that are indicative of needle marks. Other than the possibly unnecessary surgical amputations, they appear healthy and without disease. They aren't frostbitten and don't look like they've begun to starve, yet.

"Yes, that could work - if there is bedding up there," says Irene smiling back at Julia, thinking of her as a kid sister and feeling protective towards her. She loved her brothers, but she had always longed for a sister. "Shall some of us scout ahead and take a look? I'll go, but not by myself."

"I doubt they'll charge you," said Mr. Hewitt. "But you never know. Might be worth keeping them in that cell until we've called for an ambulance." He looked around at everybody. "So, ready to go?" He heads over to the door by the stairs and takes up a position leaning up against the wall. "What order should we go up those stairs? Bearing in mind that it'll be our more dangerous choke point upstairs, most likely."

William is already at the foot of the stairs as Doug says his words, though it would be easy enough to swap places. The top of the stairwell is blocked off by a trapdoor with a large bolt on the underside to keep it from opening. Luckily the bolt is both pulled back and on this side so it shouldn't be a problem to move it.

"That's more of a kill chute than I thought," says Hewitt.

John takes his time to shuffle the people back into the cell, making sure they are as comfortable as he can make them. They do nothing to keep the blankets on so he ends up tying them on with a few knots. Then he sits down in a corner with any spare lamps and quietly checks them over. Occasionally he looks up to check the people and Julia.

(The brave five head into the other room and up the stairs into a new thread....)

As John shuffles them back into the cell he sees one of the women with long, straggly hair, twitch her head so severely her ear taps her shoulder. She then flinches, shudders, her jaw working as though in some queer approximation of speech. The others are still, so very still, but she seems somewhat more animate. Are the drugs wearing off? The others remain as strange and zombie-like as before, seemingly unaware of their clothing, warmth, or modesty.

The woman doesn't respond to the shake and returns to her previously motionless state.

"This is so eerie," murmurs Julia. "What's been happening here? Where's my grandfather? How can this have happened?"

John just shook his head, still examining the woman's face. He had no answers to give.

Barely a minute passes before the door reopens and Irene and William re-enter, carrying armfuls of clothing.

John shrugs, "Clothing them makes more sense in the long run, however inappropriate it may seem now. Miss, you do the ladies and I'll do the gentlemen." He rummages around in the clothing and tries to match them up to the men. "I wonder what all this old clothes are doing down here anyway." He has a look for laundry marks or name tags as he goes.

A gunshot cracks through the silence coming from upstairs and Julia startles, darting over to grab John's arm. Even the woman who had moaned before startles and her head slowly swivels again toward John, a deep-throated sigh rattling up from her throat, like someone coming out of the deep sleep of sedation. The woman's fingers twitch as though only just now realising that she can use them.

"What the blazes! That damn Yank, trigger happy no doubt." John attempts to pacify his own worried thoughts and those of Julia. "So these people can react to stimulus, I wish the nurse was here, she'd know what to do with them, I'm just an engineer." He realises he is babbling, pats Julia's hand and stoops to his tool bag for the biggest wrench he can find; thinks better of it and walks over to the door. He tries to listen for any other noises up the stairs.

The man stands still as he lifts first one foot, then the other, to slip the trousers on which is rather awkward to do when they're doing nothing but keeping their own balance. Its also disturbing considering his man parts are only a few inches away. Putting on the man's shirt is far easier but when John comes around the front to do up the top button, the man begins to whisper something under his breath. Something that John can't quite hear from his distance. Perhaps if he moved his ear a little closer....

One man's luck can be another person's undoing. "Stop that," says Juliette as the woman she was caring for suddenly reaches for her again but as she takes a few steps backwards she bumps into another person who immediately grabs her and jerks her close to him. Something darts out of his mouth like a long millipede whose segmented body is ridged in sharp yet squirming spikes of a most horrific nature and it tears across her throat with a spray of blood. Julia screams, though manages to keep her wits about her, despite now being between two of those people and close to a third who seems to be drowsily roused by her scream.

"What the...! Oh Jesus!" John can't believe what he is seeing "Julia, Christ, get away from him, it!" John swings wildly around to see all the other bodies. He wants to help Julia but can't bring himself to go near that awful thing flaying about. Then he takes a deep breath, "I'm coming Julia, hold on!"
ooc,As John failed his sanity roll I've taken that he can't act in this round at least. But he's only lost 1 sanity point so can still function. Is that about right? I'm never very sure with sanity rolls.

Show, you take a temporary insanity with the loss of 5 points. 1 point is fair enough though losing a round is such a rational response to the whole thing that I still applaud you. 1 sanity point loss or not, it's still quite disturbing! I know I'd be at a loss for the moment.
The man burrows within her throat with yet another spurt of blood while the woman finally manages to shuffle closer and a similarly strange appendate of awful shape and hue whips forth from the depths of her throat, causing her neck to bulge disgustingly, to slash forth and bite down upon her shoulder. With a final shriek she collapses to the floor, her eyes glazing over, as the man and woman slowly kneel while the twisted monstrosities continue to feed.
Show,we'll need to wait to see how the others fare on their Listen checks. If they succeed and hear the screams, it'll take them 2 rounds to get down here so we might as well complete the 2 rounds and be ready for them.

John saw his wife killed in a bomb attack earlier this year (Hence low SAN of 45). Seeing a second woman killed horribly isn't going to do much for his mental state. Sanity Loss,If he fails the sanity roll he then takes the second lot of damage so you'll need to roll a 1d4. If you then take the maximum damage you go temporarily insane. Otherwise I'd say just your run of the mill freak out would be quite appropriate. They're not paying you any attention so even a sane mind might waste a round or two freaking out. If you go nuts, I'd recommend paranoia that anyone could be "one of them", mixed with a persistent sensation of bugs crawling across the skin, mixed with massive survivor's guilt so that you're torn between wanting to protect the others while fearing that any one of them might be compromised.

In order to reach the doctor, Nurse Irene must move within five feet of those patients who are clustering around the bloodstain, though doubtless she takes a longer path to get there to keep the gap as wide as possible for as long as possible. At a distance of five feet from the patients and seven feet from the doctor, she is positioned at a good angle to see the red button that he pushed. If they're lucky, pushing it against should unlock the door.

"Try one more funny thing and the first bullet goes through your head," says Hewitt.

The doctor scowls, "You wouldn't be the first to try. I've been in the Great War. I've seen things you wouldn't believe. I gave my leg against the Hun." The doctor doesn't appear old enough to have served in the Great War ... not unless he joined in the last year while underage.

"I suppose we'd better get on with it," says the doctor, and then everything happens at once. He tosses to the floor before them a glass vial that erupts, releasing a smell like urine and rat nests as he leaps with surprising quickness behind a couple of woman 'patients'. The 'patients' heads all jerk upright, limbs twitching, eyes rolling in their skulls with sudden motion as though they were all woken up at once by the disturbing smell. One by one, their eye twitches begin to settle on the interlopers.

Hewitt lets off a shot that manages to hit the man despite his cover though the bullet barely grazes him.

Re: Norbury At Night

OOC,sorry I should have given you the choice. You may either dodge as normal and then make a Dex x 6 roll to tap that button in one turn. If you fail, they will get another shot to hit you as you need to spend longer to grab at it. Nervous hands have trouble with fine motor stuff and it is a little red button that you have to hit by memory since it's under the table and out of sight unless you duck. OR you can dart past them, take that 2 damage, and hit the button automatically and then take a couple steps to one side. You would then be out of their reach and they may choose to go after you or Hewitt's loud gun, depending on if you make a Luck Roll + 20%. And no, your arm was grabbed, jerking it, but they didn't maintain their grip. It was basically just my fancy way of describing a normal attack, not a grapple.

It is everything Irene can do to keep from screaming in terror, knowing what these people had done to Julia, but she remembers her suspicion that sound attracts them and keeps quiet. Luckily, their attention is diverted by the loud gunshot and she tries to slip away towards the door that she has just unlocked.
OOC,I'll make sure I push the button and take the hits, then. My DEX is low, and with my pathetic Dodge I'd probably fail anyway and still be more likely than not to miss the button.

The door clicks, likely unlocked, but now there are three of them in between Irene and Doug who is nearest the door. As she whirls around to face the door, taking a couple hasty steps away from the patients, she sees Hewitt fire again now that she is out of the path of the bullet. His shot is about as true as it gets and burrows right between the eyes of the doctor, dropping him dead.
Show, second round everyone. There is plenty of space for Irene to rush around in a semi-circle behind Hewitt and head to the door which she could reach this turn. Doug will need to fend off at least one attack before he sprints off. Hewitt gets two more shots - one at the start and one at his Initiative placement. Let me know what you do.

Hewitt shoots the doctor, felling him with a shot between the eyes as his pets stumble out of the way. Irene reaches the door unmolested but the creatures move towards Doug, jaws dislocating with sickening crunches to reveal twisted centipedal creatures that writhe and dance toward him. He lashes out with his knife and strikes one right down the middle, gutting it and causing the person it puppets to hit the floor. One of the centipedal things slashes towards him but misses as does the other. Slowed by his decision to attack he hasn't yet made it to the door.

Hewitt's eyes widen in shock and horror as he sees the thing move towards him and realises once more the horrors that lurk beneath the skin of the world. He understands ... fully ... and it breaks him. He whimpers and sinks to his knees, firing in vain at the creatures but unable to otherwise try to flee.

Irene doubles back to help Doug grab Hewitt but it makes them sitting ducks for some of those creatures. Luckily the first centipedal strike misses but the second strikes true and tears across Doug's shoulder. The third is obviously excited by the scent of blood, eyes rolling wildly in her head, as its extremity bulges out of its mouth and burrows into Doug's shoulder, luckily most of it bounces off the bone but it still hurts like hell. The duo still manage to drag Hewitt over to the door, pulling it open as the creatures lunge after them but moments before they could strike again they suddenly pause and stand still, centipoidal implements waving in the air like antennae.

OOC: It took two rounds to haul him out and attempt to close the door on the pursuers so they got further attacks. I hand rolled a d10 to see who got hurt the most. Please make Spot Hidden checks.

Show,No, as he's helping you haul a large man whose not even moving his legs at maximum speed and that greatly limits his manuevrability and his ability to see the attacks coming - since they're technically attacking from behind. If you guys wanted to dodge, you'd need to take twice as long to back up to those doors and you'd need to drop Hewitt the moment they attacked you which would negate the purpose of the attempt. If Doug were being knifed rather than being struck from above, I'd be cheeky and let him use Hewitt as a human shield but these attacks strike down from above so he couldn't use him as a human shield even if he wanted to.
